If you love the outdoors, Roswell’s extensive trail system is a great way to enjoy nature and get some exercise in. We have more than 31 miles of trails throughout the city to explore. Another way to enjoy the natural beauty of Roswell is to spend time on the river. Renting a kayak or tubing down the river is a great way to spend an afternoon. The City of Roswell also hosts a number of family events throughout the summer. Roswell’s July 4th Extravaganza will be held at Roswell High School again this year and will feature live music, a kids’ zone, great food and, of course, the fireworks display. On the first Saturday of each month during the summer, Roswell hosts the Riverside Sounds concert series at 7 p.m. at Riverside Park. Bring your lawn chairs and blanket and come out and enjoy the evening. The City’s signature event during the summer months is Alive in Roswell. Held the third Thursday of the month, this street party on Canton Street is a great way to spend the evening with friends and family. There is so much to do here in Roswell during the summer that I cannot fit everything into this short article. However, if you visit roswellgov. com and pull up our calendar, you will find there is something for everyone to enjoy. Have a great summer! #LH

THERE IS JUST SOMETHING INHERENTLY wondrous about going to the beach, especially in the South. The light of the sun, the sound of the sea, the sensation of the sand, the smell of saltwater-- not to mention the taste of fresh seafood. This visceral combination has been serendipitously formed by nature, yet artfully recaptured in the form of a renowned local restaurant-- The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill. After achieving remarkable success in Buckhead-- their original home since 2010, The Big Ketch opened up a second location in Roswell in 2015. Despite being located roughly 250 miles away from the nearest beach (Tybee Island), The Big Ketch delivers the tastiest bits of the Southern coast to your table on Canton Street. This self-proclaimed “local beach house” arguably July / Aug 2018
serves fresher fare than many restaurants along the actual coastline. Here, each day brings new and perfectly-salted opportunities to your taste buds, as well as a different “Ketch”-of-the-day to the menu. The restaurant has been recognized time and time again for their world-famous hot buttered lobster rolls, not to mention the rest of their overwhelmingly fresh, ocean-sourced cuisine. They offer everything from steamed mussels, grilled oysters, lobster bisque and seared ahi tuna to southern-fried catfish, hush puppies and house shrimp and grits. Roswell resident, Dana Gurela opens Deep Roots Wine Market & Tasting Room on Canton Street
AFTER STUDYING, SIPPING AND WORKING in California wine country for five years, Dana Gurela has brought her expertise and passion for West Coast varietals back home to Georgia as the owner of recently opened Deep Roots Wine Market & Tasting Room at 1055 Canton Street. Or if like me, you’re a ‘wait-until-the-last-minute’ girl, you now find yourself googling in search of a home or condo with any available dates. Our favorite destination - and just a six hour drive from Roswell - is the stretch of beach along the Florida panhandle called “30A,” which offers us everything we might possibly need for fun, yet peaceful vacations for all ages. Scenic Highway 30A is a 24 mile corridor from end to end which hugs the Gulf of Mexico coastline in Northwest Florida's Walton County. Sugar-white sand beaches, rare coastal dune lakes, nature preserves, seafood rivaling Charleston and dotted with quaint neighborhoods posing as small towns. STAYcation We often hear friends or neighbors say, “I’ve lived here all my life, but I’ve never been to ... (fillin-the-blank).” After working with the RCVB to produce their annual ‘Guide to Good Times,’
we found ourselves saying the same thing - so much to do and see in Roswell that we take for granted! So, we set out to write an itinerary for the dream summer staycation.
ACT LIKE A TOURIST By Claire Murphy

Breakfast: Gracious Plenty Bakery and Breakfast Morning Excursion: Roswell Farmers Market Lunch: Light sandwich at The Fickle Pickle or Plum Street Cafe 3PM - Check in to the Doubletree Hotel This hotel is central to everything in Roswell and offers the right amount of vacation level luxury. Or for a little less stay at the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express or Best Western Plus. After settling in and unpacking, go for a swim, then get ready to go out - take Uber to an early diner Dinner: French: Bistro VG or Pastis (If July 14 then enjoy French food on Bastille Day!) Evening Excursion: Riverside Sounds: Joe Alterman Quartet, 7 - 9PM, Free series produced by the City of Roswell’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department. If you take your staycation the next week then on July 14 you can take in live music by Matt Carroll at 9:30pm at Roux on Canton, instead. Hail an Uber back to the hotel and get a good night’s sleep to be ready for the week!

By Danielle Bartling SINCE 1971, THE ROSWELL FINE ARTS ALLIANCE (RFAA) has worked to foster creativity and personal growth within the North Fulton community by means of art education, exhibitions and friendly competition. Members include emerging, professional and instructional artists. This nonprofit club makes a point to showcase artwork throughout the year at several venues (Fickle Pickle, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Uptown Cafe, the City Market, the East Roswell Library and July / Aug 2018
the Main Roswell Library). The RFAA has their own gallery inside the Roswell East Park Arts Center at 9100 Fouts Road.

tion paper and [gluing] them to my dad's business cards. I later discovered my mom's hole puncher and started gluing punched holes to everything in sight,” Sorensen said.
“Working out of doors, especially near water, feeds my realistic work, and I find working back and forth between realistic and abstract keeps me always excited about being an artist,” she explained.
Sorensen added painting to her bucket list for retirement. She has been teaching both mediums at the Roswell Neighborhood Senior Center since 2011, though she prefers collage.
Hardage possesses the ability to find inspiration in almost everything she sees, whether “taking a walk in the woods [or] looking through a collection of stamps from around the world [she’s] had for years.” These stamps were the inspiration for an ongoing series of 15 small abstract collages (and counting). Sherry also runs her own art blog and sells her work online. #DB www.hardageart.com.

“I never know what a finished picture is going to look like and I like the mystery of figuring out how to lay down the pieces. I primarily use different kinds of paper, but throw in cloth, string, feathers, junk jewelry pieces, etc., if they fit the work.” Sherry Hardage was once a high school teacher, but after retirement, she found her stride as an artist. For a decade, she has considered herself to be a serious one. Hardage now teaches acrylic and oil classes, and she enjoys “plein air,” or outdoor painting.

WHETHER ON THE WATER, in the weight room, or on a rowing machine (often referred to as an erg), the typical high school rower trains 2-3 hours per day, 5-6 days a week for months at a time. Oar blades and rowers must act in unison to propel the boat forward 2000 meters, often doing so in 6-9 minutes. For this reason rowing is often considered the ultimate team sport.

You spot crews getting into/out of shells while waist high in the water – as it turns out, there are no docks to launch/ recover boats, just the shoreline.
This past June 8-10, the USRowing Youth Nationals were held at Lake Natoma near Folsom, CA. Three local area high school rowing clubs – Atlanta Junior Rowing Association (AJRA), Lake Lanier Rowing Club (LLRC), and Saint Andrew Rowing Club (SARC) – each sent rowers to this prestigious event. In case you were unable to attend, let me be your guide.
As you near the water, you discover that you’re approaching the finish line with its enormous orange buoys strung northward across the lake, paralleling Nimbus Dam located just a couple hundred yards to the west. The temperature is pleasant, often in the 60s to low 80s.

in the air as only the top 378 crews from around the US are here competing in one of 18 sets of events; the excitement and cheers of encouragement elevate as the crews go past, first in a series of individual time trials, then in 133 head-to-head 2000m sprint races (with 17 photo-finishes) spread over the 3-day championship weekend. AJRA’s Men’s Youth 4x boat finished 6th in the country, while their Men’s Youth 8+ and Women’s Lightweight Youth 4+ crews both finished 15th in
their events. LLRC’s Women’s Youth 2x crew did well placing 9th in the country. Despite an oar coming apart during the time trials, the SARC Men’s Youth 4+ crew rallied to finish 14th in the country, while the SARC Women’s Youth 8+ crew ended the season finishing 19th in the country. Congratulations to these crews, the clubs and their coaches for such incredible achievements this year making it to USRowing Youth Nationals.

ROSWELL CAN BOAST THAT IN THE LAST YEAR, 10+ new restaurants have opened within its borders yet our favorites are the ones born from the dreams of local individuals who have spent most of their lives here. There is a subtle underlying mission with these entrepreneurs, an intangible, ever-present drive to improve this community through their efforts. When we heard Chipper Gronholm - a well-known, successful local real estate professional with a long resume of community involvement - was opening a new restaurant in a familiar old building, we were thrilled. The attention-hungry white building on Atlanta Street in the heart of Historic Roswell has been sitting empty since the previous restaurant - Fish Camp - closed its

doors. Right now it’s a hub of activity as the team finalizes the many details prior to a soft opening on July 5. The interior of the restaurant has a comforting modern farmhouse look, which is both relaxed and sophisticated. The butcher block tables in bamboo wood tones collaborate with this motif by providing a light, natural feel to the space. A Roswell native, and graduate of Roswell High School, Chipper had always dreamed of opening a small and casual restaurant, which would offer guests a refined and polished dining experience, yet be hosted in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. In other words, a place where discerning diners enjoy prettily presented, delicious meals with quality ingredients enjoyed ‘come as you are.’

When the opportunity arrived to open a restaurant in this location, Chipper went into action, finding local partners to help put practical application to his vision. The building renovation has been intense, but locals will be quite pleased with the makeover. Carl Thompson and his wife, Destiny, jumped at the chance to partner up and formulated a deliberate plan to create an atmosphere where everybody can feel ‘at home.’ The couple has over 30 years of restaurant and hospitality experience. ONCE IN A WHILE WE ARE BLESSED to meet individuals who are truly dedicated to their mission in life. When I had an emergency with a stray cat I’d become very attached to, Dr Kim of East Roswell Vet Hospital and Kristi Grieco of All About Cats went above and beyond the call of duty. Here is the story of Bogart. While my husband Dalton is a confirmed “dog person,” I have always loved cats. Having recently lost both our beloved border collie Bear and tabby cat Sassy, we were missing a four-legged presence in our family. Then one day, into our lives walked Bogart: the coolest cat with beautiful black hair and Sprite-bottle green eyes. He had a routine with us: he would pop up, eat a little food, hang out for a while, and then disappear again. Then one day, he popped back up, but something was terribly wrong. His front left leg was absolutely in July / Aug 2018
tatters. Given the situation, not knowing whose pet he was (he was obviously not feral), we were momentarily at a loss for what to do, but knew we had to do something. As God would have it, that same morning I had received an email from Kristy Grieco with All About Cats, a rescue and adoption organization based in Roswell. Instinctively, I picked up the phone and called her. Kristi didn’t hesitate, she said that if we could get Bogart into a pet carrier, to take him immediately to Dr Kim van Beuren at East Roswell Vet Hospital. There is no doubt we did the right thing. Dr Kim is a most special veterinarian, the perfect combination of a highly skilled doctor, with a true love for animals that is so evident. She has surrounded herself with a fantastic staff that shares her passion. (Please take a moment to read about them at www.ervethosp.com.) She put all of her expertise and compassion to work on Bogart.

Bogart’s injury was so severe, there was every chance his leg could not be saved. After weeks of intensive care, and the use of cutting-edge technology, Dr Kim performed what I consider a miracle: she saved Bogart’s leg.

Having confirmed an owner could not be located, we agreed to adopt Bogart permanently. Today, he runs around like nothing ever happened, the happiest cat in the world (properly microchipped of course!).

IT’S DIFFICULT TO LOVE SOMETHING with such a variety of types, but music manages to do just that. Music can be enjoyed by anybody, and with the vast amount of genres, there’s a certain kind of music for everybody.
The thing that sets Crooked Wits apart from other cover bands is the range of music they play: Grateful Dead, Elton John, The Steel Drivers and the like. This is in addition to their own original music, making a truly unique sound and set list.
For some people, just listening to music isn’t enough, and they decide to create their own songs or perform cover songs they enjoy. One such group, Crooked Wits, has made its home here in Roswell.
Spencer Hardee was born and raised right here in Roswell. He plays mostly guitar, but also enjoys the mandolin and harmonica. Not only is he part of this talented trio, he is also a physics teacher at Centennial High School, as well as its lacrosse coach.
Featuring Spencer Hardee, Maggie O’Connor and Stevie Jackson, Crooked Wits specializes in acoustic music and covers. The three met while attending Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. After bonding over their love of music, they decided to create their band. During the summers between Spring and Fall semesters, they settled in Black Mountain, North Carolina. They played frequently at an old watering hole, The Pump. However, they now play in Roswell and throughout metro Atlanta at breweries, bars, and private events. July / Aug 2018
Hardee isn’t the only member of Crooked Wits to live nearby, as both Stevie Jackson (lead guitar and vocals) and Maggie O'Connor (violin and fiddle) now live here, too. Stevie is an economics teacher and football coach. When Maggie steps out of the spotlight of CW, she enjoys hanging with her husband and their dog, Blue. Thier music is their passion. Two memorable Experiences at Roswell Churches

When I met Howard that day he said “I’m buying a little bank, and I want you on my team.” - Thus began my mortgage career that blossomed and flourished over the next 3 decades.
The minister of Roswell United Methodist Church at the time had prepared a beautiful service.
In l986, a good friend took me as her guest to Northside Baptist Church to introduce me to Howard Chatham, who was a prominent builder in Roswell.
Learning from the best and then fine-tuning my God-given talents helped me develop skills to stay in the game of life - and the “game of business!” In January of l997, a bittersweet and spirit-stretching period of my life began to unfold, as I planned my husband’s memorial service at Roswell Funeral Home. I HAD A LONG OVERDUE breakfast with a friend today. I knew she’d have a gem for me and she did. Ruth started by telling me about her recent singles match. First off, my hat’s off to all of you ladies who are somewhere within a decade of me, and are still battling it out between the singles lines. Those days are long gone for me. Singles used to be my thing. It used to be my jam. But truthfully, I’m not even a little jelly. I like knowing I have a partner to depend on, to strategize with, to retrieve my first serves which I often pelt at the net. She told me that she took her singles opponent through a challenging 3-setter. Not a favorite thing to do down here in Atlanta, where even the cloud covered, late spring sky brings no relief from the heat. Instead, it replaces the hot temps with viscous humidity so stifling that if it weren’t for red faces and drenched clothing, you might get away with telling people you’d just stepped out of the shower.

But get this, they could have made it easier on themselves by agreeing to play a 10-point tie-breaker in lieu of the 3rd set but these are badto-the-bone, die-hard, tennis-playing, southern ladies. There’s no “in lieu-ing” of anything! Unfortunately, Ruth lost but politely congratulated the winner who then made a curious remark about her own game, “I’m surprised that not many of my balls were 'out' today." To which Ruth replied, still short of breath from the match, “So was I!” After discussing the comment with Ruth we decided, based on other personalities we’ve met on the court, that it is a rarity these days to find an opponent who calls the “close” or questionable balls “in" rather than “out". To me, the situation is similar to the rule in baseball which gives the tie, between base runner and ball, to the runner because it’s too close to call. Roasted Beet Salad
with Crème Fraiche, Sunflower Seeds and Parsley INGREDIENTS PREPARATION
1 ½ Lbs Beets (6 medium size beets) 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Brush beets with olive
1/2 red onion (thinly sliced) oil and wrap in tin foil and set on a baking sheet to roast for 40 minutes . ½ cup Crème Fraiche 2. While the beets are roasting combine the Crème 2 Tbsp Lemon juice (and zest) Fraiche, Lemon juice and zest together.
3 Tbsp parsley (chopped) 3. Allow the beets to cool, slice and toss in the Crème Fraiche dressing. Stir in the chopped red onion, 2 Tsp of 3 Tbsp sunflower Seeds (toasted) parsley and toasted sunflower seeds and season w/salt Drizzle of good olive oil and freshly ground pepper.

By Danielle Bartling IT IS NO SECRET that school supplies are expensive; pencils, pens, notebooks, loose-leaf paper, binders, pocket folders, glue sticks, highlighters, dry erase markers, flash drives, scientific calculators and backpacks, by nature, add up quickly. Late summer is a difficult time for many low-income families in North Fulton as they struggle to afford items that their children need to succeed in school. In addition to making ends meet, the economic pressure to purchase so many supplies per child adds undue stress to already-strained family pocketbooks. Fortunately, the North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) have set up the Back-to-School Backpack Distribution, a seasonal drive that collects and distributes roughly 1,100 brand-new backpacks full of supplies to local families in need. However, these items don’t just fall out of the sky; the NFCC needs your help in providing either physical or monetary support to supplement shortages and fund this event. From July 1 to August 3, 2018, the NFCC will be accepting donations at their headquarters at 11270 Elkins Road, Roswell, Ga. Between Monday and Saturday, drop-off time is between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (at the side of the build-
ing). A comprehensive school supply list can be found on the NFCC website (nfcchelp.org), varying between elementary, middle and high school grades. They kindly request that only new, sturdy backpacks without wheels be donated. Volunteering is another way to help. Assistance is needed in sorting, filling and distributing the backpacks. Opportunities are available for both individuals and groups; 13-15 year-olds must be accompanied by an adult; 16 to 18-year-old groups require one chaperone per four individuals. A signed waiver and hourly committment is also required. Also, community sponsors are always recognized and appreciated. The NFCC is celebrating its 35th year as a nonprofit organization, originally created to supplement the resources needed for survival and basic functioning--food, clothing and shelter-- for needy families and individuals in the Roswell area. Their goal remains “to build self-sufficiency and prevent homelessness and hunger in our community by providing emergency assistance and enrichment programs.” “Together we can help... a child get excited about starting school.” www.nfcchelp.org

I REACHED OUT TO DAVE Schmit - one of the ten hand-picked individuals I’d hoped to have a general conversation with this Summer about our community. It’s important to us that our content connects with local readers in more than a ‘surface-level’ manner; therefore, we are always listening - and discovering more ways to improve our coverage in Roswell Magazine. I felt his involvement in our community - which I learned from Google, not from him - indicated he was one who ‘walks the walk.’ I reasoned who better to learn from than this guy? There was no intention to write about him - and I hope he doesn’t mind that I am! Dave Schmit is Principal of Schmit & Associates, a Roswell-based real estate development and consulting firm focused on community revitalization primarily through residential master planned communities. Recent and current projects include Roswell Court, Forrest Commons and Veranda at Groveway. Dave spent over an hour with us at Crazy Love Coffee House. I asked him the one question I had, “What would you change first if you were Publisher of Roswell Magazine for a day?” Rather than give me a list of ‘to-do’ items, he simply started talking about his affection for this community. I found myself getting swept up in his ‘big picture’ vision for revitalizing Roswell through decisive leadership and deliberate action. He spoke of the importance of ongoing dialogue with residents, historic and environmental preservation organizations, the cultural and arts communities, government July / Aug 2018
officials and local business owners. Each has its own unique stake in the future of Roswell - none whose hopes is any less important then another’s. He was quick to note; however, that we can’t sit for long in dialogue - we have to make decisions and then take action. This type of leader-vision-talk inspires me. I found him modest, carefully crediting others for any successes he has enjoyed. He spoke generously of competing visions for Roswell with an enthusiasm for listening and getting to the heart of what really motivates all sides: the desire for Roswell to be the best it can be for future generations. Things I learned from Google about Dave: •He is on the Board of Roswell Rotary •Board of the Downtown Development Authority •Vice-Chairman of Habitat North Georgia •Served on the Strategic Economic Development Committee and Chairman of the Comprehensive Plan 2030 for the City for Roswell • Recipient - Roswell’s Economic Development Award • Assists Roswell High School’s Construction program • His new project - Roswell Court - is the first small lot, true mixed-use development in Roswell Dave has lived in Roswell for more than two decades. He and his wife are now empty nesters - after raising their children here - and the couple recently moved to Historic Downtown, which proves to me he believes Roswell is the best place to live and invest in for the future. #RB
