BY BILL BARKLEY,

LIFETIME PGA, MASTER GOLF INSTRUCTOR

The Essentials of Golf

A

A golfer serious about lowering scores should

improve the pre-swing routine, the technique of meeting the ball square, control the height of trajectory, and develop a reliable short game. These are the essentials of golf. THE PRE-SWING ROUTINE During the pre-swing routine, visualize positive results. That activity of one’s imagination instills confidence, determines club selection, and helps trigger an appropriate swing. MEETING THE BALL SQUARE Learning to meet the ball square keeps the ball in play, increases the number of fairways and greens hit in regulation, scores more pars and birdies, and incurs fewer penalty strokes. The key to meeting the ball square is a slightly closed clubface at the peak of the backswing, caused by a cupped left wrist. Cupping the right wrist during the transition and maintained through impact squares the slightly closed clubface. CONTROLLING THE HEIGHT OF TRAJECTORY The height of trajectory affects distance, the way a shot holds the green, and how well a player plays the wind. Different factors affect height of trajectory. The primary factor is the angle of approach, an angle that normally corresponds to the slope of the backswing. A steeper backswing causes a higher angle of

trajectory. A more upright posture tends to cause a lower angle of trajectory. Maintaining a constant spine angle throughout the swing helps control the angle of trajectory. THE SHORT GAME The short game includes putting, chipping pitching, bunker shots and lob shots. Spin and height of trajectory influence results; for example, putts and chips are ideally played with overspin. The force of a smooth pull through impact determines distance. The hands are slightly ahead of the ball at address, de-lofting the clubface. Memory plays an important part in a sense of distance. Develop a memory for a sense of distance by repeatedly putting a ball to a given distance, and then putt another ball a few feet farther, remembering the difference. Memory plays an important part related to ‘reading the green.’ Visualization. A golfer learns to ‘see’ the line and responds with precise alignment, registering a given distance with a corresponding required level of force. The act of seeing a positive result prior to stroking a putt or chip enhances confidence and results. The key to most bunker shots and lob shots is to develop a stroke that imparts height and back-spin. Rather than de-lofting the clubface with the hands ahead of the clubhead, these

Small Business Saturday is an Ameri-

can shopping holiday held on the Saturday after US Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is a registered trademark of American Express Corporation. Many Roswell business owners run marketing specials on the November Small Business Saturday to help capitalize on the boost in foot or online traffic, as most customers in this time period are actively shopping for the holidays. Local businesses can sign up to participate in a “formal” way at shopsmall.com and American Express will ship you free of charge a box of goodies, bags, pens and balloons to use to spice up your business to attract more customers. And we encourage all residents to consider shopping small in Roswell for the upcoming holiday season, so our merchants and local business owners will thrive going into 2016!

tains three circa 1840 cemeteries. In Founders’ Cemetery, Roswell’s first public cemetery, lie the graves of city founder, Roswell King, and Major James Stephens Bulloch, grandfather of Presdent Theodore Roosevelt and builder of Bulloch Hall. In the Roswell Presbyterian Cemetery, many of Roswell’s other town founders were laid to rest, including members

of the King, Smith and Pratt families. Once known as the Methodist Cemetery, Old Roswell Cemetery holds more than 2,000 graves amidst wandering paths and native plants. Presbyterian and Old Roswell are still active cemeteries. At each cemetery are interpretive panels to enhance a visitor’s experience. These peaceful resting grounds teach a lot about Roswell history and her peoples.

Seven Days Without Exercise MAKES ONE WEAK! By Amy C. Keating, PT, MSPT

Fall and football have arrived again! What a

The latest AHA statistics report that about 80% of American jobs are sedentary and the average work week is 47 hours. These statistics are a big shift from American jobs 50 years ago. Although these statistics are negative and a bit daunting, there is potential to transform America’s health. The answer is to get moving!

I decided to explore the meaning of “fall” in the hope of finding some guidance to a potential focus for this article. As luck had it, I was inspired by the derivation of the word “fall” from the Old English word feallan, which means “to fall or to die.” As a physical therapist, the topics of falling and mortality are high on our priority list. As a profession, physical therapists have the potential to be leaders in wellness and prevention.

According to the CDC, physical activity (PA) is described as anything to get your body moving. An effective PA must include muscle strengthening and aerobic training. The weekly exercise guidelines set forth by the CDC and AHA are based on research and science. Weekly adult recommendations include: 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity along with two days of muscle strengthening.

beautiful time of year in the state of Georgia. A time when the temperatures and humidity start to drop, allowing us to enjoy watching football games and the beautiful environmental transformations!

The health of America is declining and statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) on the overweight/obesity rate and sedentary behavior patterns are alarming and disturbing. Mass transit and technological advancements have progressively led to a less active lifestyle.

Guidelines for children include: 60 minutes a day of PA with a variety of vigorous aerobic, muscle strengthening, and bone strengthening throughout the week. Implementing the recommended PA into a weekly routine will transform your body, mind, and health. Why not start

ION IS R E A L I T Y These distortions almost always reinforce negative ideas and emotions about ourselves, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

can affect our confidence and keep us from trying new things in life. Reframe: I am good enough. I can show myself self-compassion and go for it!

Four Perceptions that are really Cognitive Distortions:

4. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Cognitive distortion: Fortune telling. Fortune telling refers to arbitrarily predicting negative outcomes in the future. In reality, there are many possibilities for the future. Some outcomes are positive, and some negative. It serves us better to be hopeful and optimistic rather than negative. Reframe: I’m not going to ruin today by worrying about what may never happen

1. If you ain’t first, you’re last. If I don’t win, I lose. Cognitive distortion all or nothing thinking, which sees everything as black or white without any shades of grey. (note: teens are notorious for black and white thinking) Reframe: I didn’t place first, but third place is pretty good. I’m proud of myself and I’ll practice harder next time. 2. I always mess things up. I’ll never get anywhere in life. Cognitive distortion: Over Generalization. When we use the words always, never, every, or all, it’s likely that we are over generalizing. If we make one mistake and tell ourselves, “I always mess things up,” or “I’ll never get better,” it’s time to take a look at our thinking patterns. Reframe: I’ve made a few mistakes but am learning from them. I’ve been successful in many areas of my life. 3. I’m a loser. I’m just not good enough. Cognitive distortion: Labeling. Globally labeling ourselves

If we recognize any of these thought patterns within ourselves, we can learn to retrain our brains. If cognitive distortions are seriously affecting our lives, a cognitive behavioral therapist can help us monitor and replace negative thoughts with more realistic, positive self-appraisals. Neuroplasticity! This refers to our ability to change our brains by changing our thought patterns! It’s a beginning campout for some people, we create the ambiance for it, and it’s exciting especially for young children who have never done it before.” WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Weather, “People enjoy camping in good weather, you can’t

WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU HAD FROM FAMILIES WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PAST? “For a lot of these families, these [Campouts] start a journey into camping. Camping’s very affordable so it makes for family time outside, and so what we hear from people is, ‘Oh I’m so glad we did this with our children we weren’t sure if they were ready and now we know they can!’” “Taking children into nature is very important, because we learn a lot from the outdoors, we’ve been detached from that. Camping is a simple method of getting people re-attached to the world, and the outdoors!, said Lynn McIntyre, Public Relation Specialist. ATTRACT DINERS WITH THEIR OUTDOOR PATIOS ON CANTON STREET

F

BY RYAN PERNICE, Owner Osteria Mattone and Table & Main

Fall is my favorite season on Canton Street…

One bright morning in early October, we step out of our doors and inhale the crisp scent of leaves and falling temperatures. Summer’s sweaty stranglehold is over. It’s patio season! This is the perfect time of year to take full advantage of Canton Street’s charm. For a special evening, nothing beats a twilight stroll followed by dinner outdoors, and we’re very proud of the beautiful patio dining options at our restaurants, Table & Main and Osteria Mattone. Table & Main opened just about four years ago, serving “simple. seasonal. southern.” cuisine in the heart of Roswell’s historic district. We have two outdoor dining options - our front porch and garden patio - that perfectly capture the essence of the season. We recently added a Southern-style fireplace and additional cocktail seating to increase the magic of the space. With candles flickering along the mantle, a faint chill in the air, and a big plate of fried chicken in front of you…well, that sounds like a good night out to me! Osteria Mattone, our 2-year old Italian restaurant open for lunch and dinner, also features a fantastic patio. An Italian “osteria” is a neighborhood tavern serving pasta and wine, and “Mattone” means “brick.” That’s just what we hoped

our restaurant would become, a “brick tavern” serving our community. During these next few months, the patio at Osteria Mattone is at its busiest and most picturesque. It, too, showcases a stone fire pit with a custom-built granite table alongside, making our own little “piazza” one of the best datespots in town. But you don’t necessarily need a special occasion to visit Osteria Mattone. Our menu of classic Roman pastas is perfect for a casual lunch or night out, even if you’re just looking for pizza and a Peroni. In fact, we just released an exciting new “build-your-own” custom pizza menu of artisanal ingredients, available for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday. Although both restaurants do take reservations, we welcome walk-in guests as well. Given the unpredictability of the weather, both restaurants’ outdoor dining spaces are available on a “first come, first served” basis for walk-in business. Yes, fall is a special time on Canton Street. As the glaring afternoon sun grows more distant in memory and the holidays beckon, come experience our beautiful patios, glowing fireplaces, and delicious cuisine at Table & Main and Osteria Mattone. We look forward to serving you! Table & Main | dinner only | Tues-Sun| 678-869-5178 Osteria Mattone | lunch & dinner | Tues-Sun| 678-878-3378

THE ARTS & MUSIC

Country + Motown

T

The Roswell Cultural Arts Center will continue its 2015/2016 LIVE! in Roswell season with a performance by Nikki Lane on Friday, October 23 at 8:00 p.m.

For her hotly anticipated sophomore album, Greenville, South Carolina native-turned-Nashville-songstress Nikki Lane teamed up with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys for a record that turns the vulnerable singer-songwriter stereotype on its ears. With songs that crucify ex-boyfriends, celebrate one-night stands (as long as she can bolt town right after) and proclaim that it’s “always the right time to do the wrong thing,” Lane comes across like a modern-era Wanda Jackson, albeit with more oats to sow. “My songs always paint a pretty clear picture of what’s been going on in my life, so this is one moody record,” Lane says. “There’s lots of talk of misbehaving and moving on.” Tickets are general admission at $35 for orchestra seats and $30 for balcony seats. Mac McGee’s in Roswell will have food and drinks available for purchase before the show. Special discounts for youth, senior citizens, and military are available by purchasing in-person or calling (770) 594-6232. Doors open to the lobby at 7:00 p.m. and to the theatre at 7:30 p.m. In addition to Nikki Lane, the remainder of the LIVE! in Roswell 2015-2016 season lineup includes: Saturday, December 19, 2015: MPACT What could be more perfect than M-PACT for the holidays? As seen in the PBS “Christmas from LA” special, the warmth and elegance of M-PACT pairs perfectly with an evening of holiday favorites. You can’t help but get in the holiday spirit as the guys perform selections from their award-winning Christmas album, “The Carol Commission.”

THE ARTS & MUSIC

Art Center West

If

PART OF ROSWELL PARKS & RECREATION

If you live in Roswell, you

have probably driven by Art Center West without even realizing it. Just past Target on Woodstock Road and sandwiched between the dog park and the main entrance to Leita Thompson Park, sits a white house on a hill. That white house is home to Art Center West. Art Center West is part of the Roswell Parks, Recreation, Historical and Cultural Affairs Department and is where the ceramic classes are taught. A variety of classes are available from wheel to handbuilding, sculptural, atmospheric firing and more. Art Center West provides youth and adult classes as well as summer camps and clay parties. Diversity among the students matches the variety of classes offered. Both beginners and skilled artists find a home at Art Center West. A great community of artists exists inside the doors of Art Center West. Often you will hear students exchanging ideas, problem solving, or just feeding off each other’s creativity. It’s also a great place to learn. Art Center West’s teachers are some of the best around. Beginning handbuilders learn

the basic skills of pinch pots and coil and slab construction; wheel throwers are taught centering and how to throw basic forms. Students beyond the beginner’s level can refine technical skills and explore personal ideas and self-expression. If you have ever dreamed of making your own set of dishes or coffee mug or if you’ve wondered if you can create a figure out of clay, stop by for a tour and consider signing up for a class. For more information, call 770-641-3990 or visit www.roswellclaycollective.com . To register for a class, visit www.roswellgov.com .

It’s

It’s happened! The man of your dreams

has popped the question and you’ve said yes. Whether you’ve been planning your wedding since childhood or all of this is new ground, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. What to do first? Instinct might tell you to pick up the phone and start lining up vendors but your wedding isn’t tomorrow or even next week. Take a deep breath and look to experienced professionals to guide you. Experts advise the first step is nailing down a venue. What is your vision? Historic destination. Wildlife sanctuary. Antebellum home haven. Nature lover’s paradise. Historic Roswell wears many hats (gloves, too, when the formality of the occasion calls for them) and can deftly help arrange your wedding. History, culture and Southern hospitality—it’s all here, set against a backdrop of natural splendors and with all the modern amenities that will make your special day an experience to remember. Roswell has authentic antebellum event sites for brides who want a true Southern ambiance. Prefer petals to the past? We have sites with gardens for outdoor events that bloom with atmosphere. Located on the northern banks of the Chattahoochee River, Roswell is perched in the palm of Mother Nature allowing you to choose a venue with scenic water views. We can deliver a modern twist with industrial chic in a building with original brick walls and high beam ceilings. Now is the Best Time to Buy…Again!

Geoff Smith, Assurance Financial NMLS#1043587 Since November of 2012, rising home values in the Roswell and Metro Atlanta area seen rising interest rates, which makes a home today more expensive than the same home tomorrow. I did a newsletter July, 2014 that showed average monthly Principal and Interest payments over time on what was then a house worth $367,000. It coupled average monthly home values on that house with average monthly interest rates going back to August of 2004. If you plan to hold onto your house for anything longer than 7-10 years, you may be more concerned with monthly payment than your home’s value. The value you can only recoup once you sell the house, but the monthly payments are what you are actually paying out. Every month. For years. June of 2007 was the worst time to buy a home in the Atlanta area—interest rates were at their highest in 15 years, at 6.69% and home values were near their highest, as well. November 2012 was the best time to buy a home, since both interest rates and home values dropped dramatically.
If you are on the fence about buying, then simply note it makes good financial sense to buy now. Home values have continued to rise each year since 2012, and the local job market is quite healthy. These 5 simple yet effective spring cleaning tips can prepare your home for sale and give you the edge over other sellers: 1. DeClutter – give the illusion of space & allow buyers to envision themselves there. 2. Clean your windows & let the sun shine in. 3. Make your Kitchen & Baths white glove clean. 4. Sniff out smells & say goodbye to bad odors. 5. Trim lawn and trees. Make first impressions count! TRACY COLES, BUYER SPECIALIST KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY CONSULTANTS HERNANDEZ GROUP, 678-642-6204

Roswell Firefighter Receives “Life Saving Valor Award”

Roswell Fire Captain Jarrett Jenkins

received the 2015 Life Saving Valor Award from the Georgia State Firefighters Association (GSFA) on September 19 during an awards banquet at the association’s annual Georgia Fire Service Conference. Earlier in 2015, Jenkins was credited with saving the life of a Roswell resident who was trapped inside a single-family house fire. Jenkins initiated a search, located the unconscious victim and dragged the victim to the outside of the house into the waiting hands of EMS personnel. Because of his quick action, the victim was rushed to the hospital and survived. “We are very proud to call Captain Jenkins one of our own

and applaud his leadership and bravery in this situation,” said Ricky Burnett, Chief of the Roswell Fire Department. “His actions are a testament to the selfless service and commitment our firefighters have to keeping our residents safe.” The Life Saving Valor Award is one of many awards given out annually by GSFA through its recognition program. Others include Firefighter of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Educator of the Year, Fire Chief of the Year, and Legislator of the Year. Founded in 1952, GSFA is the largest and oldest fire service organization in the State of Georgia. GSFA provides members with an active network and resources for information, communication, and representation on a state and national level.

THE FAT AND ACID By Suzanne Davidson Co- Owner Oli & Ve 1003 Canton Street, Roswell www.oliandve.com Adding EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and aged Balsamic vinegar is a great way to eat healthily. We have been urged to cut fat out of our diets and switch to no or low-fat foods. However, many of us have cut back on healthy fats, which is something our bodies need.

Not all olive oils are the same. True EVOO, which is of the highest grade, mechanically pressed (no added heat or chemicals), has an acidity level below 0.8% at crush time, and is of superior taste. EVOO is a fresh fruit juice, has a shelf life, and should be consumed within a year of its crush date for maximum freshness. Sauté with olive oil instead of butter. Use in salad dressing and

marinades. Balsamics are easy to use and are perfect for today’s lighter cooking style. A very small amount packs a lot of flavor! Balsamic that has been aged (with no added sugars, thickeners, or colors), is low in calories and sugars, with no salt or fats, and can be stored in closed containers indefinitely. Think of a balsamic as a condiment, a way to flavor all kinds of foods. Use in salad dressings, sauces, gravies, drizzled over fresh fruit, as a marinade and over cooked vegetables. *many of the bottles labeled EVOO on your grocery shelves are “adulterated” oils—containing some EVOO but mixed with other seed oils or a lesser quality olive oil. This practice has been going on for years without the public’s knowledge.

There are two kinds of fat: good (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and bad (saturated and trans). Among the good fats, high quality olive oil reigns supreme. It provides a supply of vitamins A, D, K and E, contains anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories, aids with digestion, helps the body absorb calcium, improves

the appearance and texture of the skin, and is the most flavorful of all of the fats. The primary fat found in EVOO is monounsaturated. Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) improve blood cholesterol levels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and research shows that MUFAs may benefit insulin levels and blood sugar control.
