#LavenderFestival @BarringtonHall

T

Saturday, June 10, 2017, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Roswell Lavender Festival enters its 7th year with the annual event scheduled for Saturday, June 10, 2017 and taking place on the 7.5 acres of the Barrington Hall’s historic property with distinct sections dedicated to the day’s activities. There are classes and demonstrations in the carriage house, lavender food samples, and sections for arts, crafts, antiques, food vendors, children’s activities and the ever popular Zen Zone. The free event features a full day devoted to all things lavender in a festival environment. The 2017 demonstration schedule is still being finalized but previous and popular topics included lavender wand making, creating lavender bath salts, and presentations on cultivating one’s own lavender plantings. New this year is an opportunity to “Make Your Own Fairy House” suitable for adults and children over 10 with adult supervision. Throughout the day, attendees can sample lavender infused foods, purchase lunch from the many food vendors and even

enjoy a lavender cocktail or beer specially brewed for the Lavender Festival by Gate City Brewing. Sample homemade lavender marshmallows at Noon, lavender chocolate bark at 1pm, and peach lavender popsicles at 2pm. As festival-goers arrive, they’re greeted by helpful Lavender Queens and provided with a map of the property which highlights the many different areas of the festival. The front yard of the historic home is designated for children’s activities with crafts, historic games, and a special visit from the Lavender Fairy. Also popular is “The Zen Zone,” an area solely devoted to the healing properties of lavender, and featuring such techniques as crystal bowl therapy, reflexology and aromatherapy. Festival-goers can participate in a massage session, and outdoor yoga and Pilates classes. Local musicians contribute to the festival atmosphere with tunes ranging from Americana, folk, country and independent. The event and activities are free. Parking is offsite at the nearby Roswell Presbyterian Church and a trolley provides ongoing transportation between parking lots and the festival entrance. Follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ RoswellLavenderFestival. #roswelllavenderfestival.

Howard Entertainment, Hilbert Law and LGE Credit Union. Additional sponsors include Area 51 Family Entertainment and Gorman Chiropractic. May 6 – Webb Wilder Webb Wilder Long before there were Kings of Leon, Keys of Black or Whites of Jack in Music City there was a riddle spewing prophet of roots rock and roll. A bluesy blast of baritone bombast. Equally versed in two glorious worlds, Rock and Roll. He is a force to on tour and a tour de force. Hardly a purist, Webb has described the music he makes as, "Rock for Roots fans and Roots for Rock fans." Growing up in Hattiesburg, MS, he spent some years in Austin before setting his home in Nashville, on its ear with his unique hybrid sound – was this music country, rock, rockabilly, or blues? What it was, was popular, and he found himself touring worldwide. http://www.webbwilder.com June 3 – Ben Sollee Ben Sollee Known for a 360 degree approach to

his art, Kentucky native Ben Sollee educates as much as he entertains through his innovative style as a cellist; conveying genre-bending songwriting through electrifying performances and non-traditional album presentation. His most recent music, Steeples Pt. 2 is the second of three parts in an album release of the same name. Portioning Steeples in this way, Ben is able to break the traditional album cycle and deliver a diverse array of content to his fans. Through the innovative facets of his artistic portfolio, he teaches his audience that the modern artist has no boundaries. www.bensollee.com July 1 – The Fritz The Fritz After five years of traveling the East Coast and steadily building a reputation as a live act not to be missed, Asheville music ambassadors, The Fritz, played a strong year of sets showing thousands of new fans what throngs of Southeastern music lovers have known for years – The Fritz like to get funky. As much as they take their funk seriously, the band takes its rock-honed songwriting just as seriously. The Fritz are masters of improvisation, carefully weaving their personality into each performance. While the music may range from hard driving soul to progressive rock, a common thread of the Fritz's passionate energy reigns true in each show. www.thefritzmusic.com August 5 – Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley Ickes and Hensley Some things you know are just meant to be. Ickes and Hensley have taken what they've explored on stages across the country and the world into the studio, and the result is a set that expands their already wide-range palette. Through the contributions from Mike Bub (bass), John

We have at least two different food trucks at each concert. They are all in place no later than 6 PM. Where can I park? There is a parking lot at Riverside Park that is free. ACUPUNCTURE: IT MAY SURPRISE YOU By Melissa Mulvaney, MAE, DiplAc, LAc

For many who haven’t tried it, the word “acupuncture” can conjure up all kinds of less than pleasant ideas. While getting stuck with a

needle is not high on most people’s list of things to try, the truth is that the majority of people who do try acupuncture are delighted with their results. Here are some other aspects of acupuncture that might surprise you. #1: Acupuncturists go to school for a long time. Most people are unaware of the amount of education required for acupuncturists to get their license. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree may attend a three or four year graduate program and receive a master’s degree. Some study longer and receive doctoral degrees. Upon graduating from an accredited school, acupuncturists have to pass multiple national board exams to become licensed in their state. In Georgia, acupuncturists are required to take 60 hours of additional training every four years to keep their licensure.

nothing to do with pain. The World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health have a list of conditions for which acupuncture has been shown to be effective. From respiratory conditions and seasonal allergies to digestive troubles, from sleep problems to anxiety and depression, you name it and there’s a good chance that acupuncture can help address your symptoms. #3: Acupuncture is relaxing. Acupuncture treatments are not only comfortable but enjoyable. No one likes needles, but acupuncture needles are surprisingly thin – less than the diameter of a human hair. They do not bear any resemblance to the sharps used to draw blood or for injections. There may be some sensation when an acupuncture needle is inserted, but for the most part, acupuncture doesn’t hurt. People who get acupuncture regularly like to talk about the “acupuncture high” they experience. It’s a state of blissful relaxation that makes you feel better equipped to manage stress.

Interested in learning how acupuncture may help you? Call #2: Acupuncture is not just for pain. While it’s true that us for a complimentary consultation today, or join us at our acupuncture can work wonders on pain of all types, acuoffice for FREE classes each month. remedyhealingarts.com puncture can also alleviate a host of health issues having locallifepublishing.com 31

Is Your Home Ready for Summer Showings? By Tracy Coles , tracycolesrealtor@gmail.com The Hernandez Group, Keller Williams Roswell

The grass is finally green, the azaleas and late spring flowers are in full bloom. Before we know it, summer will be upon us. Soon we will be spending evenings relaxing with close friends and family and enjoying those lazy days of summer. As the weather warms up, now is the time to make your home summer ready. Here are some things you can do to have your home and yard ready for those sunny days and summer gatherings: 1. MAKE SURE YOU’RE A/C IS WORKING PROPERLY. An Atlanta home without air conditioning can be unbearable. Getting your air conditioner checked in the late spring will ensure that you aren’t caught out on the first seriously hot day of the year. 2.GIVE YOUR BBQ SOME TLC. There are few things worse than lifting your BBQ lid and discovering a mess of grease and caked-on fat from when you told yourself, “I’ll clean that later” the last time you had friends around. Grab a scraper and some degreaser, and even consider removing the hotplates and washing them with warm soap and water. It’s a job no one likes, but remember that your food’s going on that thing all summer. 3. CLEAN THOSE FANS. Whether it’s a ceiling fan or a pedestal fan that’s pushing the air around your house, dust can be your worst enemy. It can kill the efficiency of the fan, and being showered with dust every time you switch on your fans can’t be good for you. 4. CHECK YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM. Nothing can get your lawn looking great like a properly functioning sprinkler system. Check your system to make sure that everything is getting adequate water and that all components are working properly. 5. CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS. Remove leaves, sticks, and other debris from gutters so that heavy summer rainwater flows and drains freely.

She added, “This was not a class assignment. I told all of the students about the contest and three members of the class elected to participate and create a video”.

Benefits of Learning About

Wine and Food Pairings

The

By Debbie Rosen

The pairing of wine with food is serious business and one that takes some time to navigate. But learning about the nuances of wines is an exciting and fun-filled journey! When you start exploring wines, it’s fun to close your eyes, take a sip of your wine and write down the first thing you would want to eat with that particular wine. This is a great exercise in determining the flavor profiles of each wine, but especially in developing your personal taste. It’s also fun to do this in a group and see how vastly different everyone’s palate is.

types of cuisine. You may be unsure, on paper, which wine to serve with a dish; but, you’ll know in practice. When you taste a wine with a food it just doesn’t belong with—you will know intuitively. The point of throwing away the rules is learning to trust yourself and your own taste buds. Great restaurants always have someone on staff who is knowledgeable about the restaurant’s wine list. Some restaurants like Peach & The Porkchop, even have a wine education program where they encourage their guests to learn more about the characteristics of different wines.

The one thing you should learn through this exercise is that you should drink what you enjoy and savor wine with dishes that you enjoy drinking them with; forgetting about any preconceived rules. You’ll realize that the thought process of white wine with fish and red wine with meat is just a guideline and you should revel in what you prefer, not what age old “rules” suggest.

Part of Peach & The Porkchop’s wine education initiative is their Wine Tasting Wednesdays which take place every other Wednesday from 5:30-7:30pm, offering guests insight into a specific winery’s offerings, a region’s wines or a vertical tasting of the same varietal from different areas. During Wine Tasting Wednesday there is generally a wine educator that guides the group on this wonderful wine journey.

As you experiment, you’ll find your favorites, and you will also find your least favorites. All of this is helpful, especially when you start to notice which wines you prefer with which
