“Best Sip in By Caroline Lindsay

Presented by Roswell Inc, Summer Sippin’ is back for the second year in a row and is once again on the hunt to crown the “Best Sip in Roswell.”

W

With temperatures rising during the steamy summer months, now is the perfect time to grab your friends, family members, or that special someone and cool down with a few mouth-watering, specialty cocktails and hand-crafted beverages. Presented by Roswell Inc, Summer Sippin’ is back for the second year in a row and is once again on the hunt to crown the “Best Sip in Roswell.” This year, 25 restaurants have concocted a brand new drink, or “sip”, to compete—and you get to help decide the winner. To join in the fun, simply visit any of the participating restaurants, try their sips, and cast your drink ratings through the new Summer Sippin’ App, which is free for both iPhone and Android. Summer Sippin’ has also introduced non-alcoholic sips to this year’s event, which five restaurants are featuring, and they include everything from a specialty iced coffee to delicious smoothies and juices. Various restaurants are also offering non-alcoholic versions of their cocktails. Not only does the event spark a little friendly competition between restaurants, but it also encourages people to try something a bit different when they visit a restaurant. That’s a winning combination in the eyes of Sandy Toledo, owner of Foundation Social Eatery, the restaurant which won last year’s

image in OSTERIA M “Sgrop

competition.

“Our guests are more willing to try something new, rather than sticking to their go-to beverage, especially since it's only available for a limited time,” Toledo said. “Our staff enjoy getting in on the competition as well.” As a sister event to the popular Roswell Restaurant Week, Summer Sippin’ helps support one of the city’s largest industries by building excitement about what’s happening in Roswell’s food and beverage scene. “The restaurant industry is one of the largest economic drivers in Roswell,” said Carisa Turner, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Roswell Inc. “We have one of the largest concentrations of independent, family-owned or chef-driven restaurants in Metro Atlanta, and this event is one way we support their growth and sustainability—by fostering an environment of innovation and a greater connectivity between the restaurants and the community.” Summer Sippin’ runs through July 31; and the “Best Sip in Roswell” for 2017 will be named in early August.

The event is sponsored by Gas South, New Kent Capital and Ringer Consulting Group. A full list of all participating restaurants, drink descriptions, and restaurant locations can be found on the Summer Sippin’ App, designed by Ringer Consulting Group, or at summersippin.com. Help crown the Best Sip in Roswell!

Can You Tell Me About River Cruising? Brought to us by Expedia CrusieShipCenters in Roswell.

The Parliament building on Danube river, Budapest, Hungary. To learn which River Cruise would most closely match your interests and style, contact Expedia CruiseShipCenters in Roswell at 770-415-1030 or roswell@cruiseshipcenters.com.

R

River Cruising is the fastest growing segment of the cruise industry, and one of our most frequently asked questions is, “Can you tell me about River Cruising?” There are a variety of River Cruise operators and each has its own specialization, so here’s a general overview. DESTINATIONS Due to the smaller ship sizes, river cruises can offer travelers some of the most sought-after destinations along historic waterways of the world. River cruises offer exotic destinations such as Russia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Egypt as well as the historic European rivers such as the Danube, the Rhine, and Seine. Each destination comes with a variety of different complimentary shore excursions that guests can choose from, including walking tours, guided bike tours, majestic landmarks, and enriching cultural experiences. SHIP SIZE River cruises by nature are smaller vessels; this allows them to navigate calm waters and port at exclusive destinations. Most river cruises host just 100 - 200 guests, which allows guests to experience a relaxed environment.

SERVICE The river cruise experience is elevated with superior service. Travelers can expect attentive and personalized service. Some river cruise lines provide expert guided tours, complimentary bikes onboard, as well as salon and spa services. Most river cruise lines also provide complimentary Wi-Fi. DINING Most river cruise lines include all onboard meals, soft drinks, free flowing wine, beer, and specialty coffees and teas. The dining experience is guaranteed to entice even the most discerning diners. In addition, river cruise providers may extend the culinary experience offshore by combining their shore excursions with famous local restaurants at port destinations, wine tastings, and local specialties. ONBOARD ACTIVITIES Entertainment onboard river cruises tends to be aimed at enriching the guests' cultural experiences. Evening entertainment is usually accentuated with sophisticated performances, eloquent music or local cultural performances. Guests can also take part in lectures, culinary classes, or specially crafted shore excursions. These shore excursions allow guests to take in the very best of every destination with an expert guided tour, or explore at their own pace.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

BT’s New Defensive Coordinator Coach Tim McFarlin announced to the players in June that they have a new Defensive Coordinator, Coach John Thompson.

B

Blessed Trinity Catholic High School’s football Coach Tim McFarlin announced to the players in June that they have a new Defensive Coordinator. Coach John Thompson has joined the team, taking over for Coach Tim Ewing and Coach Josh Allen. Coach Thompson began his football career as a high school quarterback at Forrest City High School in Arkansas. From there, he went on to play defensive back at the University of Central Arkansas. He began his coaching career there and later moved to the University of Arkansas where he worked under Coach Lou Holtz as a grad assistant. Things seemed to take off from there. In 1992, Coach Thompson was named Defensive Coordinator and later named Assistant Head Coach at the University of Southern Mississippi where he worked under head coach Jeff Bower. Together they led Southern Miss to two Conference USA titles, two Bowl appearances, and Coach Thompson's defense was twice ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

Coach Thompson made his first appearance in the SEC in 1999 when he was named Defensive Coordinator at LSU under Coach Nick Saban. Since that time, Coach Thompson has served as the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Arkansas, the University of Florida, Ole Miss and The University of South Carolina under Coach Steve Spurrier. A few years ago, Coach Thompson came to Atlanta to help Coach Bill Curry start the football program at Georgia State University. While there, he mentored a young coach by the name of Tim Ewing. John and his lovely wife Charleen moved to Alpharetta a year ago where he planned to retire from coaching and help Charleen open and operate a clothing store. Like some coaches, Coach Thompson missed coaching so much that he and Charleen both agreed it was time for John to return to coaching. Fortunately for BT, he decided to return to where it all began, with high school football. Coach Thompson spoke to the players and stuck around to meet every one of them. Coach McFarlin, as well as all the BT football coaches, are excited to welcome Coach Thompson to the BT football family.

Veronica Stone Styling in North Fulton

e Salon

ARTICLE BY DANIELLE BARTLING IMAGES BY CHRIS SMITH

S

Since age 12, Veronica Stone has nurtured a sincere love for hairstyling. During high school she enrolled in cosmetology school, where she realized just how perfect of a career fit it was. At age 17, she became a licensed professional and began further training at a Vidal Sassoon-trained salon. There she practiced hair cutting and coloring under some big (award-winning) names in the industry. “I have 23 years of experience in the hair world, and I have a passion to pass it on. I grew up in the Chicago area learning from elite hairstylists and excelled through the salon I was working at. I built my clientele so fast and became part owner at the age of 24.” And by the age of 26, she decided to move to the South. “Every time I would visit Georgia, I felt like it was my new home, so I moved to the suburbs of Atlanta, continued my education and became a Finish design educator at a very well-known salon.” In her free time, she underwent training to become an American Board Certified Haircolorist. And with what seems an ever-growing level of expertise, she started an upscale business catering to Roswell and nearby Atlanta suburbs. Veronica Stone Salon first opened in 2006, then relocated to a larger facility in 2013. They are located on the corner of Highway 9 and Bethany Bend (< 1 mile from Cambridge High School and Kings Ridge). At her salon, Veronica has numerous specialties such as hair color and foiling, men’s business cuts, blowouts, keratherapy (keratin treatment), Great Lengths hair extensions, long hair, product prescribing and personal haircare lessons. “As a way to pass on the many techniques I have learned as well as my own, I created VSS Academy for stylists to master hair techniques in my salon. My signature foiling technique is like no other. With this technique, I have taught my stylists to create beautiful looks of all shades and color corrections.”

(pictured above) Veronica Stone Salon color bar. Veronica explains, “My focus is creating the best experience for my customers by having a highly-trained team that continues to perform unique methods of hair color and cuts.” veronicastonesalon.com Veronica is joined by Kathy, a longtime VSS stylist who “has picked up many of [her] techniques and made them her own with such creativity.” Kathy specializes in men’s cuts, balayage, short/trendy haircuts, product prescribing, hair color/foiling techniques, keratin treatments, long hair and scalp massages. “The most challenging thing is having to do everything as a salon owner. It is hard when I am busy doing hair and I cannot get to other issues that need my attention. I have tried several different schedules to balance my time and the balance has not been perfect, but I am happiest doing hair, so I have recently extended my hair schedule.” Veronica is joined by two other talented and trained stylists. Jazmin specializes in facial and body waxing, men and women’s cuts, foiling and scalp massages. Alexis specializes in blowouts/ treatments, kids’ cuts, curling/special occasion design and hair color. Clients come from near and far, and Veronica’s goal is to make all of them confident in their hair. Her favorite compliment to receive from happy customers is, “Can I take you home with me?” “This means to me that I achieved their hair goal above and beyond. So, I do my best to teach them how to keep their hair up at home with styling tips and the correct products for their hair.”

She admits missing her first, smaller location, which she traded for a larger, more prestigious, street-visible salon. But no matter where this venture takes her, Veronica has a vision that remains steady. “In the future, I would love a smaller upscale boutique salon and hope to always keep training a team of under 10. My focus is creating the best experience for my customers by having a highly-trained team that continues to perform unique methods of hair color and cuts.” Veronica Stone Salon has partnered with the Paul Mitchell Esani School of Roswell, from which they recruit cosmetology students. Veronica also belongs to the Beauty Underground team, a group of hugely talented hairstylists from across the nation. On July 9th, she will style hair live on stage in Las Vegas for the 2017 NAHA (North American Hairstyling Awards). “I am honored to be working with these Elite hair stylists, make-up artists, and photographers. I plan to bring back the excitement and knowledge I experienced and share it with my team and clients. I also want to continue to recruit new stylists coming to the industry and train them to be the best they can be.”

Local Yoga Instructor Climbs Everest

T

By Ahoo Sarab, Owner, Korsi Yoga, korsiyoga.com

Tick tock, Janne Ho – the cry of our guide pulling us up from the rocks we rest on, to continue our 10-hour trek, at altitude of almost 18,000 feet, to base camp. The snowstorm blasts around us as the ground quickly ices over, making each step a concentrated, focused effort. The cliffs edge we crawl beside getting lost in the collecting snow. The mind is nowhere but in the present moment. The body is nothing but hyper aware. The spirit, the spirit wavers, between extreme exhaustion and extreme elation. This is Everest. Our final push for the day. As I trek slowly upward, always upward, an earlier conversation I had witha group of climbers plays through my mind. “How has yoga helped you on this trek?” they ask of me when they learned I own a yoga studio and am a teacher. Sucking at the thin air, 50% less oxygen than what I’m used to at sea level, pushing through the wall I’ve hit, for the second time that day, the answer seems obvious. Controlling the breath and stilling the mind. Andy, a British climber, explains how he took up meditation earlier that year, in preparation for his Everest summit push, to calm

the panic attacks he’d feel when the O2 levels would drop to 25% of that at sea level. His meditation practice taught him to work his way out of the panic state and to not become so absorbed in the thoughts of the mind. He explained how he also learned the art of pranayama, controlled yogi breathing, which allows for maximizing lung capacity, critical at high altitudes, which is pretty much anywhere in the Himalayas. We begin to do one of the most useful and basic breathing techniques, called Ujjayi Pranayama, often referred to as the Ocean Breath. It is a breathing technique where you breath in and out through your nose, directing the air through the back of your throat, making a ‘HA’ sound. Slow, long breaths are critical – 4 to 6 counts on the inhale, 6 to 8 counts on the exhale. The entire group joins in and soon the only sound you hear in the tea house is the slow, steady sound of the ocean. My foot slips on ice, as I’m whipped away from my thoughts of yoga and newfound friends. I’m back in the moment, back with my mindful breathing and surrounded in the majesty of one of the most beautiful places on earth, Mt. Everest, Chomolungma, the Goddess Mother of Mountains. And my mind is at peace.

Your Pet’s Dirty Little Secret

Y

BY JACKIE ZURINAGA, The Town Gossip (thetowngossip.com)

You’ve seen it before. Your dog scooting his bottom across the ground, accompanied by excessive licking, and a foul smell. Some might mistake this behavior for a dog trying to wipe himself clean or other unmentionable stimulation, when in fact it is a telltale sign of the dreaded anal gland impaction. Dogs and cats have two anal sacs on both sides of the anus. These sacs fill with fluid produced by the anal glands. This fluid gives them a personal scent and before domestication, was used to mark their territories every time they pooped. Today this anal “name tag” is considered vestigial, and like the human appendix, serves no real purpose. Normally, these glands empty themselves when an animal has a well-formed bowel movement. If a dog’s anus or perineum becomes inflamed, the anal glands will not be able to secrete and the resulting back up can quickly turn into a painful infection

or abscess. The causes of inflammation are unclear but animals with poor anal muscle tone, frequent bouts of diarrhea, and soft feces seem to be at risk. Smaller dog breeds and overweight cats are also more predisposed than other breeds. It is important to note that cats do not show the same butt scooting, licking behavior as dogs when impacted. Owners must be aware of redness or swelling around the anus. THE CURE: If your dog is showing these behaviors, have your veterinarian manually drain the glands. KIDS, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. If a dog does not have a predisposition to this disorder, preventative draining is not necessary. It is important not to drain healthy glands too frequently because this can lead to unnecessary irritation. However, if your pet does have frequent bouts of soft stool or has had an impaction in the past, a yearly drainage should be considered. Crabbapple Beds and Bones provides anal gland drainage. BEYOND BOTOX

O

Reversing Signs of Aging w/Acupuncture By Melissa Mulvaney, MAE, DiplAc, LAc

One in five women seriously consider cosmetic surgery or other Western anti-aging treatments to “fix” her face, body. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture (FRA) has become a sought after procedure for celebrities and those looking for an all-natural, less invasive treatment without the side effects and risks of surgery, injections and peels. It is virtually painless and requires no downtime. FRA is a great option for many women (and men) seeking a refreshed look not only to their face, but to their neck and décolleté as well. Most will see five to ten years taken off of their appearance, and they can expect the results to last two to five years with maintenance. FRA is for those with fine lines, deep wrinkles, sagging facial and neck skin, dark circles, drooping eyelids, puffiness, age spots, large pores, dry skin, and acne. Additional therapies such as facial cupping, jade gua sha, tuning forks and skincare product may be incorporated into the treatment based a client’s unique needs. Different protocols may require from ten to twenty treatments. One may expect to spend anywhere from $1000 to $2500 depending on the practitioner’s rates. FRA treatments work on the causes of aging through stimulation of acupuncture points with needles on the body. The

practitioner can bring blood and qi to the face, neck, and décolleté by inserting very fine needles there. This technique, also known as collagen induction therapy or micro-needling create minute trauma in the dermis of the skin making it think it’s being damaged which bring collagen and elastin to the area, lifting and plumping the appearance of the skin. Many clients are pleasantly surprised by the additional benefits of improved sleep, digestion, and stress relief. But, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. In general, people in poor health are less likely to see good results from FRA. There has to be a certain amount of qi, or energy, in the body from good nutrition and circulation to produce improvements. It is also not recommended for people with some other health related issues. In my office, if determined to be a good candidate, a client can expect at least twelve FRA visits which last 90 minutes each and treat the whole body – not just one area of the face. Recommendations for skincare, supplements, and at-home maintenance tools are made on an individual basis to accelerate and extend the results of FRA treatments. remedyhealingarts.com

Roswell Real Estate

HOT MARKET! By Tracy Coles , tracycolesrealtor@gmail.com The Hernandez Group, Keller Williams Roswell

The summer months should be quite busy for home Buyers, Sellers and real estate agents alike! As we head into the summer, real estate analysts are saying that the national housing market is poised for a very hot (and busy!) summer home buying market. Several factors are at play, including continued low housing inventory, pent-up demand and optimistic sellers. Over the next year, we will see continued regionalization in terms of housing trends and conditions. The national housing market does not march in lockstep anymore (whether it ever did is debatable). And we continue to see a wider divergence in economic and market trends, nationally and locally. There is no denying that the Roswell real estate market is hot, hot, hot!

Here are a few things to consider if you are thinking about putting your Alpharetta home up for sale:

• Price Your Home Competitively! Even in our active market, nearly 50% of listings do not sell. Homes that are priced right for condition sell for 98-102% of sales price, while over priced homes experience price reductions and ultimately sell for 94-96% of the original list price and additional time on the market. • Ensure Your Listing is Online. Surveys show that people will look online to buy a home. Professional photos and great descriptions will help to get your listing noticed. Homes that don’t show well online will be passed up for homes that present well. • Garner More Attention. If you are not seeing offers, your home is not priced appropriately for condition. You may consider a price adjustment or improving the condition to get more attention. Avoid Surprises. Getting a pre-listing inspection and/or property appraisal may help you avoid last-minute issues that could end up costing you time and money. • Partner with a Licensed Real Estate Professional. It is in your best interest to have a representative who can remove the emotional aspect and guide you through the paperwork and negotiations. With these tips, you can be ready to sell your house and the highest price possible!

providing an after-school tutoring and mentoring program for at-risk children throughout North Fulton County. They currently serve over 250 children through three Roswell school programs and often have a waiting list.

Life is Short. Clean Less.®

Their summer camp bridges the gap for 120 students at the elementary level, focusing on academic retention so students do not lose necessary skills over summer break. Since 1993, STAR House Foundation has held this ideal: mold children into thoughtful leaders, and they will make their mark on those around them. From kindergarten through middle school – STAR House provides academic support kids need to stay on the path to graduation. A group of Junior League Woman identified a growing need within our community: they saw children without enough support at home falling through the cracks in our local school system. They identified 24 vulnerable students and gave them the extra instruction they so badly needed in a small apartment building in the heart of Roswell. The program has been growing ever since. Students served by STAR House are at risk for several reasons: dropping out of school due to academic troubles, disengagement, pressures form peers, family stressors, language barriers and inability to access necessary resources. STAR House provides a safe place where students can connect to peers and adult teachers/mentors. Program volunteers assist with homework, school projects, test preparation, and good study habits. Further, they mentor students in making good life choices that will help them succeed. HOW DOES STAR HOUSE DO IT? They provides services thanks to the generous donations of time and money from within the Atlanta community. There are no fees for STAR House services – 100% of funding comes from grants and contributions from corporations and individuals throughout Roswell and Atlanta, supplemented by fundraising events held in Roswell that receive community-wide attendance. We continue to move our mission forward by following a long-term strategic plan that ensures sustainable and continued support for our K-8 students. roswellgov.com; starhousefoundation.org

Peach & the Pork Chop Awarded

BEST FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH

W

By Debbie Rosen

When USA Today and Sandwich America recently published one of it’s wildly popular 10Best polls, they were in search of the best Fried Chicken Sandwich in the entire State of Georgia! Their team of culinary experts, including Kay Logsdon, Editor and Chief of The Food Channel, nominated 20 of their favorite Fried Chicken Sandwiches from every part of the State from Douglas to Dunwoody, and everywhere in between. Each of the sandwiches had their own unique twist, from having an Italian spin to those topped with slaw and pickles, and even some with a honey butter sauce. The public was asked to cast their vote for one of these 20 Fried Chicken Sandwiches. People were encouraged to vote daily for the sandwich that rocked their fried chicken world. From this distinguished list of 20 celebrated sandwiches, our local Roswell favorite, Peach & The Porkchop’s Jim II not only came in third in the overall competition, but was actually the number one sandwich in the Atlanta metro area, as the first and second ranked sandwiches came from Augusta and Douglas. The restaurants with the top 10 winning votes were published on USA Today’s 10Best List, as well as on Sandwich

America’s website. We asked Peach & The Porkchop’s Owner Chuck Staley how this winning sandwich was developed. “We are always engaging with our guests at the restaurant, and encourage them to develop their own sandwich creations based on combining their favorite ingredients,” reflects Staley. “One of our longtime guests named Jim and his son Jim Jr. came up with the unique combination for this Fried Chicken Sandwich, so when we launched our most recent menu, we put this delicious sandwich on it, and named it the Jim II,” Staley concludes. The Jim II starts with a Prestige Farms Chicken Breast that is fried and topped with grilled jalapenos, sautéed onions, mushrooms, bacon and pepper jack cheese and it’s served on a fresh, specially crafted bun. It’s available on Peach & The Porkchop’s daily menu, which is offered during lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Peach & The Porkchop is the only Roswell Restaurant to be named on this 10Best List. Peach & The Porkchop is located at 12040 Etris Road in Roswell. For more information about the restaurant and to make reservations, visit www.peachandtheporkchop.com.
