Marry Me in Roswell

Bridal Consultants advise the first step in planning a wedding is nailing down a venue – a special events facility - to host your wedding reception and/ or ceremony.
The many beautiful and historic churches and special events facilities in Roswell make this decision particularly difficult because there are so many fabulous options! What is your vision? You can choose an historic destination, a wildlife sanctuary, an outdoor garden setting, a scenic backdrop, an antebellum home, a hotel, or an area restaurant with ample space for all of your guests. Roswell has this and more, boasting over 40 venue selections for brides and grooms. A great place to start is the Roswell Welcome Center in the center of town, located at 617 Atlanta Street. The knowledgeable and friendly staff at the Roswell Convention &
Visitors Bureau can answer your questions, provide assistance and even provide complimentary gift bags to welcome your out of town wedding guests staying in a Roswell hotel. visitroswellga.com
Planning your big weekend in Roswell can be so much fun. Couples can have their engagement photos taken in a beautiful garden setting, perform their ceremonies at one of Roswell’s magnificent churches, host the rehearsal dinner at an eclectic restaurant and celebrate the reception at a larger hall or historic home – all within a few square miles! For a comprehensive list of churches and houses of worship, take a look at page 46. EAST ROSWELL
E
East Roswell Park (9000 Fouts Road, Roswell) is a 40-acre park offering sports fields, trails, playgrounds, a disc golf course and recreation center. Disc Golf (often erroneously referred to as Frisbee golf) is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to Paul Ince of the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc." In just eight years (2000–08), the number of disc golf courses doubled. The game is played in
about 40 countries around the world. While the roots of the game are very casual and laid back, the newer generations of players are taking course design as well as the other elements of the game to a new level. Though early on targets were trees or fence posts in the woods, now courses like at East Roswell Park are being cut out and under-utilized parts of parks, schools, and private land are being used to make some of the most challenging and strategic courses around. All courses share the same basic elements: targets, tee pads, signage, topography, and most important, safety. Stop by and try it yourself!

COVER STORY
Georgia Ensemble Theatre in its 24th Season
GET’s fourth of 5 main stage plays this season, is the wonderful story Having Our Say, The Delany Sister’s First 100 Years (see front cover).
R
Roswell’s own Georgia Ensemble Theatre, the only professional theatre company in North Fulton, will continue its 24th season with our theme of celebrating the strength and courage of women. The year’s first production is celebrated Atlanta playwright Topher Payne’s hilarious new comedy, Greetings Friend Your Kind Assistance Is Required (Jan. 5-22, 2017). When retired schoolteacher Rhonda Charles opens an email in her spam folder with the subject line, “Greetings Friend your kind assistance is required,” the journey of a lifetime begins. With her best friend Marybeth in tow, Rhonda travels to the mysterious kingdom of Zardelgnia, facing down guerilla fighters and attempting to rescue the captured Crown Prince. Along the way, Rhonda and Marybeth encounter danger, unexpected romance, and a new sense of purpose - proving it’s never too late to find new adventure. This hilarity is sponsored by the Robert W. Hagan Family Foundation. The third production on this theme, and GET’s fourth of 5 main stage plays this season (February 15 - March 6), is the wonderful story Having Our Say, The Delany Sister’s First 100 Years (see front cover). 103-year-old Sadie and 101-year-old Bessie Delany are preparing dinner in remembrance of their father’s birthday. While they cook, they recount a fascinating series of events and anecdotes drawn from their rich family history and their careers as pioneering African American professional women. As descendants of slaves, they have seen their fair share of turbulent times, and yet they forge into the present, with a little daily
yoga to help along the way. Made possible by GET sponsor The Kimberly-Clark Corporation, this production is during the Roswell Roots Festival of 2017 in February and March. And finally, GET finishes this historic season in April with the smash hit musical Million Dollar Quartet by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. It’s December 4, 1956. Early rock ‘n roll stars Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, along with newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis find themselves in the legendary Memphis recording studio Sun Records. This musical based on the electrifying true story, finds these icons in the greatest jam session of all time, and now it will explode onto the GET stage. Featuring a score of rock hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “That’s All Right,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and many more! Thanks to The Mimms Company and Synovus/Bank of North Georgia for supporting this production.

Isabelle Ford Bullock
Expedia® CruiseShipCenters® hosts Celebrity Cruises
“I’m overwhelmed! There’s so much information online! How do I know if I’m getting the best value for my money?” We hear this every day in our office. Our desire is to help make vacation planning easier for families because the choices online ARE overwhelming; and it always feels like there’s a better deal out there somewhere.
Roswell High School Artist By Daniel E. Sanchez Esq.
Isabelle Ford Bullock, a Roswell High School student, has always had impressive creative
independence. As a child, she proudly produced jumbled knots and ghastly concoctions of food and paint. Today she draws with enviable skill, modeling with convincing form and flesh. Her graceful lines and broad gestural range easily bring wisps of hair, or the glance of an eye, under her expressive control. Her skill remains evident as she courageously explores different styles. Like the masters, the simplicity of her rendering is unapparent until examined closely, and we realize there is no “there” there, and the expression comes not from slavish photorealism, but from intensely intuitive gestural control. Even when she evokes the imaginative world of surrealism, the skill remains. While consistent skill is an artistic virtue, fine art resides in a mysterious realm of originality, judgment, and taste – characteristics that typically elude young artists. Isabelle’s pieces show restraint of palette and good design judgment, avoiding reliance on gimmick. None is overworked and she understands less as more. isabellefordbullockartist@gmail.com

FARM FRESH dining at PEACH & THE PORK CHOP
M
Many people in the area might not realize that there are an abundance of local farms where they can get fresh, organic produce, located less than 20 minutes from their doorstep. When opening Peach & The Porkchop it was a priority that we were located in an area where we could receive daily deliveries of fresh-from-the-farm eggs and high quality, locally grown produce.
With today’s busy schedules, people are conditioned to do all of their shopping at the local grocery store, but this means that they are purchasing produce that comes from all over the country, and sometimes the world. If you put the store-bought produce side by side with local, organic versions, the locally grown produce has a noticeably more vibrant flavor. There is no comparison from the eggs we pick up from Fox Hollow Farms in Rockmart, Georgia that were laid in the past week, to the grocery store brand that are at least 45 days old before they reach your table! Whether they are used in an Omelet, Salad or on a Burger ‌ you can absolutely taste how fresh it is. We are finding that more and more of our guests want to know exactly where their food is coming from and they demand the highest quality, freshest ingredients available. Many people are thrilled to learn that they can actually visit these farms themselves and purchase the same high quality ingredients, to use when cooking at home. There are a number of local farms that provide hormone free, all natural ingredients located within a 20 mile radius of Roswell, and they are run by local Georgia culinary artisans who take pride in the products they produce. Some of these farms include Circle A Farms in Cumming (hydroponically grown lettuce as well as basil and kale), Fat Land Farms (our neighbor in Roswell produces non-GMO Eggs, Honey and a variety of pesticide-free, organic produce that they specifically grow for our restaurant including squash, heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, herbs, lettuces, spinach, carrots and onions), Maxwell Farms in Dallas, Georgia (fresh jams and preserves as well as pickles and relishes), Georgia Grinders Peanut Butter and NaturAlmond Almond Butter, and Gazaway Farms in Cumming (has wonderful fresh sausage and produce such as Broccoli, Pecans, Carrots, Cabbage and Watermelon). We are so lucky to be living in an area surrounded by a bounty of wonderful freshly grown and made foods to enjoy! Peach & The Porkchop is located in Roswell at 12040 Etris Road, D100. They are open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday, lunch during the week and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. peachandtheporkchop.com

The Art of the
cheeseburger
24 Roswell Magazine Jan/Feb 2017
A
A cheeseburger isn’t simply a hamburger topped with cheese. It’s actually more complicated. Traditionally, the slice of cheese is placed on top of the meat patty, but the burger can include many variations in structure, ingredients, and composition. Adding cheese to hamburgers became popular in the late1920s to mid-1930s, and there are several competing claims as to who created the first cheeseburger. Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have introduced the cheeseburger in 1926 at the age of 16 when he was working as a fry cook at his father's Pasadena, California sandwich shop, "The Rite Spot," and "experimentally dropped a slab of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger."
*
An early example of the cheeseburger appearing on a menu is a 1928 menu for the Los Angeles restaurant O'Dell's which listed a cheeseburger smothered with chili for 25 cents. Other restaurants say they invented the cheeseburger. Currently, the most expensive cheeseburger in America belongs to New York City food truck 666 Burger. It's a $666 burger that is wrapped in gold leaf and topped with lobster, caviar, truffles, foie gras, and aged gruyere cheese melted with steam from champagne poured on the hot griddle. The largest cheeseburger ever made in the world weighed 2,014 pounds, "60 pounds of bacon, 50 pounds of lettuce, 50 pounds of sliced onions, 40 pounds of pickles and 40 pounds of cheese." The record was broken by Minnesota's Black Bear Casino breaking the previous Cheeseburger record 881 pounds.

Gift Certificates are the Language of Love
Valentine’s Day might be a little overrated and overhyped; but to
newlyweds, the newly dating, and mothers with young children, this lovers’ day appears to continue to hold a most special meaning. We took an unofficial poll of Roswell women to find out what they secretly want most from their significant others on February 14th. No joke. Every single one of them said two things: a dinner date and a pampering gift certif-
icate. Oh, and be sure to add a mushy card to seal the occasion! We are making it simple by listing some of our readers’ favorite choices.

Roswell Green Expo FEBRUARY 18
Go green with the City of Roswell and Keep Roswell Beautiful (KRB) at the 6th Annual Roswell Green Expo on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. Event organizers are currently accepting applications from “green” businesses and organizations that would like to help citizens learn more about incorporating environmentally responsible, sustainable practices and products into their homes and day-to-day life. This free, family-friendly event will be held at the Bill Johnson Community Activity Building at Roswell Area Park, 10495 Woodstock Road, Roswell, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for green businesses, services, and organizations to spread their message to hundreds of attendees. The event will consist of a vendor/expo area with booths and a wealth of information, a kids’ area with hands-on activities and learning, and plenty of speakers with green-living tips and demonstrations. “The expo is a great way for residents to learn about being
green while having fun, and none of it would be possible without the support of our sponsors and vendors,” said Janet Liberman, co-chair of the Roswell Green Expo and Executive Director of Keep Roswell Beautiful. “The whole event is designed to actively engage community members while teaching simple ways to be sustainable and green. It is the perfect way for businesses and organizations to let the community know that they want to be part of a greener tomorrow!” Vendor participation is $25 for non-profit organizations (returned the day of the event) and $50 for for-profit businesses. The deadline for applications is Jan. 18, 2017. For more information about being a vendor, contact Stefanie Dye at Stefanie. dye@gmail.com or 404-375-3652. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Contact Frank Hasty with Keep Roswell Beautiful at frank@abulouslighting.com for more information. For more information about the Roswell Green Expo, contact Janet Liberman at jliberman@roswellgov.com or 770-5946451, or visit www.roswellgreenexpo.org.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
Sweet Success

By Melissa Mulvaney, MAE, DiplAc, LAc, Remedy Healing Arts
Each year more than 40% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions to exercise more, lose weight and break bad habits, but did you know that only a scant 8% follow through on their goals? How successful were you in 2016? The key to a successful resolution, experts agree, is that you have a simple, specific, plan and someone who will help to hold you accountable. In my office, I use a multi-faceted approach to help patients meet their New Year’s resolutions based on their individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. This consists of customized goal-creation; Chinese medicine diagnostics to determine organ imbalance; acupuncture treatment to address specific concerns; lifestyle advice regarding physical activity, smoking cessation, stress handling, mindbody and breathing exercises; and dietary therapy to assess diet and nutritional gaps. The last of these, nutrition and a healthy diet, especially after all of the bad-for-you bingeing of the holidays, is a critical piece that often makes or breaks the success of a New Year’s resolu-
tion. But where to start? Blood-sugar metabolism. Symptoms of blood-sugar handling problems range from chronic stress and anxiety, lowered immunity, slow healing, inflammation, pain, craving carbs or sweets, sleep problems, mood swings, and excessive appetite with more extreme symptoms often leading to diabetes. Often patients think their diet is healthy, but they are not aware of how much sugar and refined carbohydrates they consume daily. Maintaining normal blood sugar is crucial to balancing the body’s energies and ensuring that acupuncture treatment is as effective as possible. But, most importantly, healthy blood-sugar metabolism is an absolutely essential first step to ensuring that my patients make the most of their New Year’s resolutions. Start 2017 off on the right foot with a realistic New Year’s resolution that you know you’ll achieve. Call us for a complimentary consultation today, or sign up for our FREE blood sugar support class on January 21. Seating is limited. remedyhealingarts.com

RISE IN INTEREST RATES IMPACTS BUYERS By Tracy Coles (The Hernandez Group, Keller Williams Roswell)
Home prices and sales have risen steadily over the past 3 years, and we are seeing a continued annual increase of up to 5% in home prices, as a result of pent up buyer demand and low supply.
H
As we usher in 2017 we may see a leveling of growth due to lack of inventory and increased interest rates. Historically, a GDP growth of 3% or higher is considered fantastic, and the latest reports show a growth of 4%. The result = jobs, jobs, jobs. In the Atlanta area we are seeing an influx of companies, like Mercedes Benz and 67% of small businesses expect an increase in revenue this year while economists are forecasting a 3% increase in wages. An increase in interest rates was heavily forecast in 2015, yet we continued to see incredibly low interest rates through 2016. We have closed the chapter on the foreclosure crisis, with distressed sales reaching a more “normal” level, making up less than 10% of the market. Since the mortgage debacle lenders have required documented income, minimum credit scores, and lower debt to income rations, resulting solid loans. Economists from Realtor.com and the National Association of Realtors agree we can expect a continued increase in home prices and interest rates of 4.4-5%. What does this mean for you? The median home price in the US is $214,000. (The Roswell average is closer to $350,000.) With 20% down and an interest rate of 4%, you can expect a monthly payment of $817.33. Now, based upon the lowest extreme of 4.4%, that same loan payment increases to $857.30. Calculated at the most widely expected rate of 5%, that payment jumps to $919 and at the max of 5.1%, the monthly payment, hits $929.53. The result is an increase of 5 to 14% in monthly payments. Now let’s calculate in the 5% increase in home prices and you are looking at a monthly payment increase of 17-18%!! For buyers – that means that you will be able to purchase less house for your money. With home values on the rise, and interest rates still very low, now is the time to move forward with your home purchase and maximize the amount of home you can afford. For sellers, that means that your buyer pool (or the number of buyers that are able to afford your home) is shrinking and now is the time to put your home on the market and take advantage of the pent up demand and low inventory.

Go for a River Walk This fourth phase adds approximately one mile to the greenway.
Riverwalk Phase 4 Opens
The City of Roswell recently celebrated the opening of Phase 4 of the City’s Riverwalk, a multi-purpose greenway that parallels the Chattahoochee River. The Riverwalk project dates back to 2000, when the residents of Roswell approved a bond referendum that included funding for the City to construct a seven-mile greenway along the Chattahoochee River that would incorporate parks, trails, and other recreational and educational facilities. Since that time, the City has completed the first three phases of the Riverwalk project, which included a Riverwalk through Don White Park, Riverside Park, and Azalea Park to Willeo Road. This fourth phase adds approximately one mile to the greenway, which runs parallel to the river, starting along Azalea Drive, just at the point where the road curves off the river, and extending to the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Another phase—Phase 5—is still to be built in the future and will extend the Riverwalk to the Gold Branch Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Cobb County.

CATARACTS
Is Laser or Traditional Cataract Surgery Best For You?
A
By Dr. David A. Palay
A cataract is the clouding that occurs in your eyes as you age. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the U.S., affecting everyday activities like reading, watching TV, or driving at night. Sometimes symptoms of a cataract may be improved with new glasses or brighter lighting. But most people with cataracts will need cataract surgery. The good news is that cataract surgery today is faster, more effective and safer than ever before. Common symptoms of cataracts include cloudy, blurry or faded vision, glare or frequent eyeglass prescription changes. Some people also experience double vision, or multiple images in one eye. People in their 40s and 50s may have cataracts, but it is usually only around age 60 or older that they might begin to affect a person’s vision. While cataract surgery can be performed manually by the surgeon, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery offers a higher level of precision. The laser creates a perfect circular incision into the lens and the lens is fragmented into smaller pieces. Any astigmatism is treated with corneal incisions. Once the cataract is prepared, the second part of the procedure
involves removing the lens fragments and inserting a lens. The lens inserted can correct higher levels of astigmatism and be targeted for near vision or distance vision. Some people elect “monovision,” which is one eye targeted for near vision and the other eye targeted for distance vision. A lens that provides both distance and near vision in the same eye also is available. The traditional cataract surgery and femtosecond laser surgery methods have similar outcomes for patients with no astigmatism. The safety of the procedure and recovery with the femtosecond laser versus traditional technique is the same. Nearly all patients are candidates for both techniques. It boils down to how much astigmatism you have and whether you want to be less dependent on glasses after surgery. For those with astigmatism who want to be less dependent on glasses after surgery, the femtosecond laser option is better. Before agreeing to laser surgery, schedule a consultation with your surgeon to ask questions and make sure you are comfortable with the doctor and facility. Dr. David A. Palay is a board certified ophthalmologist affiliated with Northside Hospital. Dr. Palay specializes in cataract surgery, corneal transplant surgery and refractive surgery. It is that time of year again! We look forward to the freshness and possibilities that 2017 holds. Too many feel change should come with the calendar. Hoping to feel better, be better, do better but is this the time to make change. We are still in winter and should be going inward and being introspective as this is the season for rest and reflection. Therefore resolutions can be made but change and growth should wait until spring. This allows us time to nourish and develop the seed we plant in Winter. Spending the winter months preparing and planning for successful resolutions to come to fruition and last. During the process of finding your resolution you must first find the imbalance. Being Mindful of where you are today and areas in which you need or want to restore balance. Evaluate the areas of your life, family, career, health, spirituality, to name a few. Consider your satisfaction or happiness in each area. Seek out that which is negative, to reduce, and that which is positive, to strengthen. Find your confidence and courage. Don't be anxious to implement change so fast. Take the time to develop a resolution that is clear and staged. Do not take on too much growth at once. Focus on one or two areas that are the most out of balance or will have the greatest impact on your health and happiness. Making lifestyle changes can be difficult and frustrating at times. Break your resolution(s) into smaller goals and assign a time frame to ensure success. Take notes as you work towards each goal be-
