SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER IN ROSWELL – what a beautiful time of year. The word that always comes to mind in the Fall is “change.” Change in the weather, in schedules, and an overall feeling of transformation.

I’ve gone through a few changes this year and am undergoing an inner transformation of sorts. What about you? Some people wait until January 1st to make resolutions and changes, but Fall always seems like a better time for me. Everything else around me is changing— why not me? Our beautiful City is in a constant state of change—we have so many community leaders, activists, volunteers and business owners consistently striving to make Roswell an even better place to live. Public and private organizations like Roswell Inc, Visit Roswell, and the HRBA (Historic Roswell Business Association) keep their eyes toward the future, toward growth. You can learn more about them on pages 12 and 20. Two major Fall Festivals are coming up: Roswell Arts Festival (p8) and the Roswell Wine Festival (p15). Bring the family to the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s “Halloween Hikes” (p38) in October; and don’t miss Roswell’s first annual Tour of Homes (p28). Two aspects of Roswell that stand out for me issue after issue are food/dining and the arts. This issue is no exception. We’ve got a restaurant guide (p56), a profile of Carlisle’s Pizza Tavern (p18), a story about local chefs taking part in NYC’s James Beard House event (p32), the performance line-ups at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center (p14 and 46) and the Arts Festival (p8). ROSWELL ARTS FESTIVAL
EACH YEAR THE ROSWELL ARTS FESTIVAL is held on the third weekend in September at the Historic Town Square. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Roswell Arts Festival only allows artists to have booths in the festival. There are no local business promtions or other types of vendors permitted. Entertainment featuring local singers and dance companies begins daily at noon. Children’s paintings, sand art, balloon animals and other activities are also available. The festival offers a variety of food trucks on site. Since its founding, the Roswell Recreation Association has worked tirelessly to raise money to support the Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department. Among its first projects, the Association built Roswell’s first tennis courts, a little league field, and paid part of the salary for Roswell’s first Recreation and Park Director’s salary. In 1966, the Association began the Roswell Arts Festival, the first arts festival held north of the Chattahoochee River, as a way to promote arts in Roswell and raise funds for recreation and parks in Roswell. The Roswell Arts Festival has been so successful; it is the only fundraising initiative of the Association. Over the years, the more than $1 million raised have been used to help purchase park land, playground equipment, spraygrounds, meditative gardens, and many other projects that have benefitted residents of all ages in Roswell. Celebrating 25 Years of Supporting Community Initiatives and Partnerships in Roswell, Georgia
FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS, the Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the City of Roswell. This partnership began in 1991 under the leadership and direction of then Mayor Pug Mabry and Zac Henderson. On October 8, 1991, 500 people consisting of elected officials, tourism officials, citizens and business owners in Roswell attended the “kick-off” meeting for the Historic Roswell District Owners & Business Association and donated more than $20,000 to show their support. (Historic Roswell District Owners & Business Association would change its name to Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau in 1995.)

For approximately 20 of its 25 years, the CVB’s sole purpose was to address revitalization of the Historic District and promote tourism in the City of Roswell.
Board of Directors president, Ken Davis stated: “As proud as I am of the past 25 years, I am even more excited about the next 25 years as our tourism and economic development initiatives continue to grow and bring success to Roswell. To celebrate our history and better position and align our programs for the years to come, I am pleased to announce the renaming of our executive committee and board. The purpose of this realignment is to better define our Board of Directors responsibilities while at the same time more strongly positioning both programs we govern. Moving into the future, we will be known as Roswell P3 - Supporting Community Initiatives & Partnerships Since 1991.”
Under the direction and leadership of Executive Director Dotty Etris, Roswell’s tourism program has enjoyed great success. According to an independent study, for every $1 invested in advertising, marketing and promotions of tourism, the City of Roswell reaps $365 in tourism related economic activity. The success of our program was recognized at the State level when Dotty Etris was recognized by Governor Nathan Deal with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Tourism.
Davis went on to say, “Roswell P3 better represents the two distinct programs under the Board’s responsibility and helps bring clarity as we continue as a public, private partnership with the City of Roswell. Reporting to our community led Board of Directors, Dotty Etris will continue to lead our tourism initiatives with the Visit Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau. Likewise, Steve Stroud will continue to report to the Board of Directors and lead our economic development initiatives with Roswell Inc. “
In 2011, the Roswell CVB Board of Directors expanded its partnership with the City of Roswell. The partnership would not only include promoting tourism in the City, but it would also include promoting economic development for Roswell. This new program was charged with retaining and expanding current businesses in Roswell as well as building awareness of Roswell as a great place to do business.
“I am excited about our future in Roswell and the role Roswell P3 will play. The Board of Directors, the Executive Directors and their respective staff members are committed to promoting Roswell.”

THE CITY OF ROSWELL’S Historic & Cultural Affairs Division is partnering with South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization in Atlanta, to bring the Southern Circuit tour of six independent films and their filmmakers to the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. The series includes five documentary-style films and one narrative film. Films were reviewed by a panel of industry experts, with final selections determined by screening partners who will present films in their communities. Invited films and filmmakers were chosen from 412 films submitted from across the country. “We are thrilled to be hosting our first independent film tour in partnership with South Arts,” said Katherine Jones, Cultural Services Manager for the City of Roswell. “One of the neatest parts of the series is the opportunity to speak with each filmmaker during a Q&A after the screening. It will be a wonderful and engaging way for audience members to learn about the art of filmmaking and the process of becoming a working artist in this particular industry.” “Our 2016‐2017 slate of Southern Circuit films includes thought‐ provoking documentaries, inspiring dramatic narratives and an amusing experimental film. Each event starts at 7 p.m. and runs approximately 2.5 hours. Each film is feature-length and will be shown in full, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. JOIN OUR Roswell Wine Festival Grows to Become Among the Largest in GEORGIA

By Molly Berg THE ROSWELL WINE FESTIVAL is returning to Canton Street on Sunday, October 2nd. The festival has sold out the past three years and grown to become among the largest wine festivals in the state. The 2016 event will be held Sunday, October 2 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is sponsored by Audi North Atlanta in conjunction with restaurant sponsors Osteria Mattone, Table & Main and Vin25. “The Roswell Wine Festival is a great opportunity for residents and visitors alike to come out to scenic Canton Street and learn more about wine, listen to music and support the local community,” states co-founder Peggy Robinson. “It’s rewarding to see the impact the event is having on the community. My partner, Dwight Cunningham, and I come from the corporate world so this event is a fun departure from our typical day-to-day work.” As longtime friends, Robinson and Cunningham started the festival four years ago when they wanted to fuse their interests in wine and community service. The event is 100% volunteer based and there are still volunteer openings for this year. While sampling new wines, festival attendees can enjoy the sounds of live music along Canton Street. The 2016 festival will feature performances from local musicians Monica Spears and Derek Worth, as well as the blues / rock group Five by Five on the main stage. In addition to the festival on Sunday, two educational wine seminars will be held in conjunction with the festival. A high end wine tasting will be on Saturday, October 1 at Osteria Mattone, while a Wine 101 session will be held immediately before the festival at Vin25. “One of the best parts of the festival is that we donate proceeds to a different local charity each year,” states Robinson. Ticket sales from the 2016 Roswell Wine Festival will benefit ArtAround Roswell, a partnership between the City of Roswell and the Roswell Arts Fund that hosts 10 loaned works of art around the city. In previous years, festival proceeds have gone to Friends of Roswell Parks to build a dog park in Roswell Area Park (currently in design), Roswell Fine Arts Alliance and Bert’s Big Adventure. HELP RENAME WALLER PARK EXTENSION WALLER PARK EXTENSION

THE ROSWELL RECREATION COMMISSION is seeking public input through an online survey regarding the renaming of Waller Park Extension. Currently, there is confusion between Waller Park, which is located at 250 Oak Street, and Waller Park Extension, located at 160 Dobbs Drive. While the names are similar, the two parks have separate entrances off of different roads. Waller Park was donated to the City of Roswell by James Isaac Wright, and was named Waller Park for James H. “Pony” Waller. Therefore, by deed requirements of the land, the name of Waller Park cannot be changed. Waller Park Extension received its name due to its connectivity to Waller Park, as the two parks occupy adjacent parkland. However, there has been confusion between the two parks over the years from both residents and public safety officials. To eliminate that confusion, the Roswell Recreation Commission has proposed two possible park names for consideration. The City would like public input to determine the name of the park and has set up a survey at www.roswellgov.com/RenameWallerExt. Through the survey, members of the public can indicate which of the following names they prefer, or they can chose to write in their own park name suggestion. •Groveway Community Park •Groveway Park The survey will remain active until September 30, 2016. About the Groveway Community The Roswell Recreation Commission’s park name proposals seek to honor Roswell’s Groveway Community. The Groveway

Community is the core of what was the earliest African-American neighborhood in Roswell. Some present-day residents can trace their roots in the community for generations. With a desire to strengthen, unify, and make a lasting impact on their immediate community, the Groveway Community has historically initiated community-wide dialogue and addressed disparities with pragmatic solutions. These ongoing, unstructured assemblies led to the establishment of more formal organizations aimed at providing support services and improving the general welfare of the community and its members. These organizations included the Groveway Community Organization (which ultimately merged with the North Fulton Child Development Association), the Groveway Community Center (which was rebuilt by this determined community after it was torched by the Ku Klux Klan in 1961), and the Groveway Community Group. The Groveway Community Group (GCG) has always been civic-minded as evidenced by its efforts to provide resources to meet the community's needs, both big and small. GCG and its members actively seek to fulfill its mission in a myriad of ways, such as helping families in crisis situations, transporting senior citizens who do not have access to transportation to their appointments, maintaining the Pleasant Hill Historical Cemetery, providing scholarships to deserving high school students, and participating in the United Way Shoe Box Campaign and Community Day in the Park/book bag giveaways with school supplies. The GCG has also been very instrumental in establishing Roswell Roots, one of the largest Black History Month celebrations in the state.

The website offers a clean, smart design allowing users to easily navigate through useful and current information, including an online listing of all businesses, services and events, as well as activities, sights and things to do to make time spent in Historic Roswell most exciting. Located at ExploreRoswell.com, the website is a gateway to which all Historic District business websites can be linked. It’s tailored to three key audiences: residents, visitors and businesses, with the purpose of promoting the growth, development, and economic prosperity of the Historic Roswell community. Upon its founding in 2015, the HRBA selected the development of a unified website as the top priority, and wasted no time acting on it. “Our business community felt we were missing an opportunity to connect with visitors to our area and offer them a ‘launching pad’ for planning their visit to downtown Historic Roswell,” said HRBA Executive Director Ryan Pernice. Local businessman Rand Cabus, owner of Mojo Vinyl, spearheaded the HRBA’s efforts in the site development with Ken Lopez, another Roswellian, and his firm, Nearshore Interactive. The site implements a consistent look and feel and is representative of the picturesque environment that exemplifies Historic Roswell. Furthermore, the site uses a responsive design, which allows for easy viewing across all devices.

Any anti-cancer nutrition plan should limit processed and red meats while increasing fish such as salmon, sea bass, and tuna,” explained Marian. Seafood is a natural source of many key vitamins and minerals in levels that are not easily found elsewhere. Seafood is a great choice for kids too, especially if they’re battling a weight problem. Most seafood is low-calorie, low-fat, high protein, and contains abundant levels of Omega-3 fatty acids which are so important. Importance of regular check-ups and screenings CHANCES ARE YOU know a man who refuses to see a doctor. Most men don’t make an appointment until they’re sick, often skipping preventive care. But the consequences of ignoring their health could be very harmful. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting one out of every six men, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men, according to the American Cancer Society. Prostate cancer is increasingly common as men age and is more often found in younger African Americans and in men with family history of prostate cancer. As a result, prostate cancer screening is especially important for men who have urinary symptoms, who are African American, or who have a family member with prostate cancer. When it comes to screening, just one blood draw takes care of many of your important screenings, including, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurement which is a very sensitive screening tool to detect prostate cancer. Blood sugar and cholesterol can be checked with the same single tube of blood at the same time, too. A rectal exam at your checkup may also help identify prostate abnormalities. Identifying Treatment Options Every case of prostate cancer is different and treatment recommendations will vary depending upon patients’ age and health,

Early detection with PSA testing more frequently discovers cancers early when they are very small and slow growing, for whom active-surveillance without treatment is frequently recommended. THE HISTORIC ROSWELL DOWNTOWN DISTRICT remains a centerpiece of the city, whether you’re drawn to beautiful Canton Street, the Roswell Mill area, the gorgeous parks, or simply the overall vibe. Annual and weekly events take place that draw hundreds of local residents and visitors. The Roswell Historical Society, an organization established in 1971, holds a significant role in the city of Roswell’s efforts, and they intend to continue thriving for years to come. On September 17th and 18th, 2016, the Roswell Historical Society hosts their Annual Tour of Homes, which presents a unique opportunity for ticket-holders to admire some of Roswell’s most unique homes not typically open to the public. On Saturday, guests witness precious treasures inside the following homes: Weatherford Place at105 Weatherford Place, Goulding Place at 109 Goulding Place, Broadwell House at 1033 Canton Street, and Forrest Commons at 50 Commons Alley. On Sunday, visitors will view the Minhinette House at 815 Mimosa Blvd, Presbyterian Church & History Room at 744 Mimosa Blvd, Whitmore Home at 659 Mimosa Blvd, and 1609 & 1802 Liberty Lofts. This first year, the Tour of Homes allows attendees to see the mastery of artifacts that have been preserved for decades. With tickets starting at $20, visitors may experience exclusive views of newer construction in historic Roswell areas. By showcasing these treasures, the society intends to bring to light their mission of fostering an understanding of Roswell’s history and the Society’s efforts to preserve it. Funds from the tour support the society’s future efforts. Sally Kolb, society committee member, envisions

the impact that events like this tour can have in the community. “Funds will support our efforts to restore the Old Roswell Cemetery and Hembree Farm, support our extensive Library and Archives Collection and reach our goal to preserve the history of Roswell by adding even more fun events and educational programs for the community to enjoy,” Kolb said. As their office is located in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, and their historical artifacts are preserved at the Research Library and Archives and even displayed downtown, the society presents an impact from inside the heart of the city. Local efforts by this non-profit, including events like the Tour of Homes, intend to “collect, preserve, share, and promote the history of the city of Roswell,” Kolb said. By hosting other events such as theater night at the Cultural Arts Center, Roswell’s Farmers Market, and fundraisers geared towards Hembree Farm and the Old Roswell Cemetery, residents have extensive chances to explore the history behind their beautiful city. Events following the 2016 Tour of Homes include a monthly program at Great Oaks, Cleaning Day at the Old Roswell Cemetery, Beyond My Stone, and Night at the Archives; their website includes a full calendar of events. CANTON STREET WONDERFULLY preserves Roswell’s historic appearance and the 1920 Tavern continues to keep the spirit of tradition alive. Happily married owners Howard and Jenna Aronowitz breathed new life into the old tavern in the hopes of providing fresh food made from scratch. While deciding to keep the original title intact, it manages to be both accurate yet contradictory. On the one hand the building did open in the 1920s and the chosen interior reflects the overall style of the period. On the other hand it is billed as a “tavern” but serves the upper-scale food expected of a fine dining restaurant. Priding themselves on creating familial relationships with regular customers, the Aronowitzes consider anyone who walks through their doors to be family. Because of Roswell’s resemblance to their former homeland of South Africa, they have adopted this city as their own, with the tavern serving as a “second home”. The Aronowitz passion for the food industry spans over 15 years and remains at the center of the tavern since its opening just over a year ago. This friendly environment possesses an interior influenced by those of the “speakeasy” style of the early 1920s which include walls lined with antique mirrors, crystal accents and globe lighting. The tavern’s dark brown wood and leather banquettes help elegantly encapsulate an earlier time. Popular dishes include the smoked chicken and fresh fish fillets. The cordial staff and quality ingredients complement one another to ensure an exceptional dining experience.

EVERY SEPTEMBER, Keep Roswell Beautiful teams up with the City of Roswell and the Chattahoochee Nature Center to be part of Rivers Alive, Georgia’s annual river clean-up. Our state’s 70,100+ miles of rivers and streams need our help to remain viable resources for drinking water, recreation, and places of natural beauty. The Chattahoochee is an especially important waterway in Georgia, so those of us fortunate enough to live nearby have both the responsibility and privilege to take care of it. This year, Roswell volunteers will lend a hand on Saturday, September 24th from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM with privet removal (privet is an invasive shrub), litter pick-up at Riverside Park and the surrounding areas, and educating residents about stormwater pollution by marking storm drains in local neighborhoods.. Our business partners in this endeavor are Chattahoochee Nature Center, SuperTARGET, Starbucks, Advanced Disposal, and the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell. 2015 WAS THE 175th ANNIVERSARY of Roswell Presbyterian Church (RPC) and thus the town of Roswell as Roswell was originally built within a one mile radius of RPC. The original sanctuary proudly stands today on Mimosa Blvd. As part of the 175th Anniversary, RPC asked Cindi Crane, author of Roswell Redemption, to add the history of RPC and Roswell from 1984 - 2014 to their history book, A History of Roswell Presbyterian Church, originally written by Clarece Martin. To follow is an excerpt from Chapter XIII, The Town… Roswell proudly proclaims as its vision statement: “We are a family oriented, safe and attractive community that respects the natural environment, protects its historic character, and celebrates its culture. We are Roswell…The best place to live in Georgia.” In the 1980’s Roswell began to grow and expand at an incredible rate with a population of 6,732 in 1970 to 23,337 in 1980. In a matter of a decade Roswell was transformed from a small town surrounded by woods, fields and farms into an affluent bedroom community in the most desirable suburban area of Atlanta. Roswell was forever changed as it became Georgia’s 8th largest city with a population of 91,168 in 2013. During the past thirty years Roswell has performed a balancing act between a desire to financially benefit from its tremendous growth and its desire to retain its character as a charming historic town with a high quality of life suitable for raising and

nurturing a family. Celebrated author and columnist Celestine Sibley at age 49 moved to a cabin near Roswell that she called Sweet Apple. Ms. Sibley was a prominent voice for the changes and considerable growth of Roswell. “Clamor has come to the country”, she wrote in 1980. In 1999 the Georgia Department of Transportation named a section of GA 140 the Celestine Sibley Highway. In 1975, 540 acres in the city were designated as the Roswell Historic District. It generally encompassed Mimosa Boulevard, Bulloch Avenue, the Roswell Square, the Roswell Square stores, and the area in the vicinity of Sloan Street. The Historic District has now expanded to include land and properties from the Chattahoochee River north to Woodstock Road. The City of Roswell purchased Bulloch Hall (1972), Smith Plantation (1985), and Barrington Hall (2005), homes of some of the original founding members of Roswell Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Nathaniel A. Pratt’s home, Great Oaks is used as a special events facility. Former Mayor Pug Mabry stressed the importance to the city of developing Canton Street when he stated, “As goes the Historic District, so goes the City of Roswell.” Visit Roswell Presbyterian Church’s History Room for more information about the church and the town of Roswell. roswellpres.org

Smell the fragrant woody scents of colorful autumn leaves crunching on the mulched trails under your feet as you hike the well lighted trails in the moonlight. Let your guide introduce you to friendly forest creatures as they tell their fascinating tales with a dash of improv and humor. Then watch the crackling flames of the bonfire and listen to the lively rhythms of our world music drummer as you meet a parade of imaginatively costumed characters. Kids who come in costumes receive a special ‘treat’. Celia Steigerwald, a 21 year veteran volunteer of Halloween Hikes at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, describes her experience with this unique local family friendly event. “Halloween Hikes is something that was a wonder to me when I first encountered it. Having just moved back to the States, after many years abroad, the concept of Halloween was a bit daunting and culturally alien to both me and my two young children. Therefore, when this great alternative, one full of education under the magical guise of giant talking creatures, came along I just had to be a part of it.” “I have been many characters through the years; frog, opossums, firefly, kingfisher, spider, squirrel to name a few. The memories that linger are the camaraderie of the folk who volunteer to be characters. They are a special breed of individual that takes their commitment to the children very seriously with a large ladle of hilarity whirled on top.” “There are a few stand out years. One would be when, as a person with some acrophobia, I had to climb into a deer stand and have a bat head hanging off my feet to give the

appearance of hanging upside. Once I was up, all was well, except that the head was rather heavy and I lost feeling in my legs and was unable to climb down. This was solved the following night by putting a rolled up sleeping bag under my knees and allowing me to express my strong tree hugging urges both on the way up and down. I felt some accomplishment that year. One year the person who was supposed to play Mother Earth, an indispensable and incredibly important character, didn’t show up. My eleven year old daughter put the costume on, worked on some lines for the half hour before the public came through and did a stunning job. It was one of those wonderful parent moments. She went on to play other characters when she was older and I once had the privilege of sharing a dual character spot with her as a dragonfly and firefly. We had such fun together those nights. The role that seems to have fit me best is that of Howie Pollute, a pile of trash. I love this character, the message and the children’s and parent’s reactions to him. “I have since learned to appreciate a traditional Halloween, but give me Halloween Hikes every time. Walking through the woods at night is something few people experience and to have it sprinkled with a series of surprises with a powerfully positive message cannot be beat.” Celia Steigerwald is one of those volunteers we have come to rely on year after year, said Rebecca Gilbert, Director of Community Programs at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. It is hard to imagine that she has been doing this for twenty years now. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC are invited to join the City of Roswell and the Roswell Rotary Club on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, as they honor those lost and injured during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The 9-11 Tribute will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Mike Gann 9-11 Memorial, located near the lake in Roswell Area Park, 10495 Woodstock Road. The tribute will feature the Roswell Fire & Police Honor Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Pipe Band, the Holcomb Bridge Middle School Chorus, a floating wreath presentation, special guests and commemorations. Atlanta radio legend Moby Carney will serve as master of ceremonies. The 9-11 attacks were the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil in U.S. history. The attacks killed 2,977 people, including 343 firefighters and 72 police officers, who had rushed to the scene to help people.

FROM ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL attendees to preparing a gourmet meal at one of the most highly- recognized culinary platforms in the world, the Pernice brothers flourish in the culinary field. After developing Table & Main, now a Roswell staple, the brothers partnered together to open a finer dining setting at Osteria Mattone. Pairing their backgrounds of wine knowledge, the service industry, prior experience cooking in New York, and an extensive amount of trial and error, the duo will now showcase their talents at the James Beard House in the big Apple.

Table & Main combines clubhouse chic with the neighborhood scene that Roswell residents sought after, prior to its establishment in August of 2011. With that concept in mind, Ryan Pernice, Owner and Operator of the restaurant, created Table & Main to serve “simple, seasonal, and southern food,” all under one roof. From seeing neighbors on a weekly basis to servicing soulful, comfort foods like their renowned fried chicken and appetizing meatballs, Table & Main serves a familiar, Roswell community on a daily basis. After much success and “striking a chord with guests from the beginning,” Table & Main has created a standard of dining in the rich, historic district, according to Pernice.

Osteria Mattone, originating in Roswell since November of 2013, commenced when Dan Pernice, formerly working at The Modern in New York City, discussed the opportunity to return to Roswell and open a restaurant with his brother. Thus grew Osteria Mattone, a niche, Italian cuisine centrally located in the city. With Dan as a wine connoisseur and Ryan as an already-established owner of a Roswell restaurant, their expertise naturally aligned to fill a need for an Italian bistro in the neighborhood. Thus grew a thriving partnership of brothers and their culinary

ART OF LIVING STUDIOS CONTINUE to change lives, one paint stroke, pottery piece and jewelry creation at a time. Created with the Lord’s power to heal in mind, Patricia Reeves, founder of Art of Living Studios, comprehends the immense influence that the arts have on one’s immune system. Reeves yearned for a physical plan for her healing when she found the Lord calling her to the arts. Art of Living Studios is a culmination of the arts and an equipping center for artists and individuals to find that sense of community they may be lacking while glorifying God in the process. By pouring unconditional love to individuals that need a place to belong, Reeves and her team of four other resident artists offer sessions titled “Create with the Creator,” which take place in the shelter of her own home. Although the Lord led Reeves to found this organization in 1994, the studio is a non-profit as opposed to a religious organization; visitors and workers of all denominations participate. The Community of Hope, a main sponsor for the studio, offers 250 acres of outdoor grounds of fishing, camping and hiking areas where groups can come together to “facilitate God’s glory through the arts and nature,” Reeves said. Although separate ministries, they have the same mission in mind, which is to provide an atmosphere where one’s diagnosis is left outside the door. The studio and the outdoor spaces facilitate worshipping while working, Reeves said.

THE ROSWELL CULTURAL ARTS CENTER (RCAC) has announced the lineup of artists for its 2016-2017 performance series. Entering its 6th year, the popular LIVE! In Roswell series returns with three concerts covering the history-making music of the Beach Boys, Temptations, and Patsy Cline. The upcoming season also includes the newly launched “Roswell Family Series,” which features three innovative, educational shows aimed at introducing the youngest audiences to the theatre.
February 4, 2017: A Temptations Revue, featuring Grammy Winner Barrington “Bo” Henderson•This dynamic show spans more than a decade of Temptations classics and recreates the great harmonies and choreographed dance steps that made the group famous. Motown’s classic hits will have the audience dancing in the aisles, including favorites like “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “Just My Imagination,” and so many more.

LET YOUR GARDEN GO GREEN! Remember, how you maintain your garden or lawn impacts the health of the soil, air, water and the habitats for native wildlife – as well as the human community nearby. When you plant native plants, you’ll be able to reduce your chemical use and save money on water. You’ll be taking important steps to greener gardening, which is better both for animals and your family. “Native plants are easy to grow,” said Lisa Cole, horticulture manager with the Chattahoochee Nature Center. “They are aesthetically pleasing, promote biodiversity, need less water and are already adapted to the climate and are drought tolerant.” That means they need less care, water and chemicals, leading, ultimately, to a better plant. If the plant is a herb or vegetable, the benefits are multiple. “By growing food in your backyard you can monitor how organic you want it to be. With food at the grocery store, you never know what you’re getting, even if it says it’s organic. And being truly farm-to-table, they taste better. There are higher nutrients in these crops that are lost in shipping to stores.” Beyond people, wild animals need to eat as well. Planting native shrubs, flowers and trees is the easiest way to provide

Volunteers prepare plants in the CNC’s greenhouse. the foliage, nectar, pollen, berries, seeds and nuts that many wildlife species need to survive and thrive. “Hawthorn, Viburnum, Beauty Berry and Holly shrubs are great for adding color to attract our feathered friends,” said Cole. “To attract pollinators and butterflies, remember to have something blooming through long seasons. Remember to plant host plants such as milkweed for Monarch Butterflies.” And now is a perfect time to plant. A long, cold winter enables plants to develop dense root systems for strong healthy growth in the spring. Native plants adapt easily, require less maintenance, and exhibit lower pest loads. A great way to learn more about native plants, and to grab some of your own, is to visit the Fall Native Plant Sale, Sept. 23 and 24, at Roswell’s Chattahoochee Nature Center. How Concussions Affect the Fascia

HOW DO CONCUSSIONS AFFECT the fascia in the body? Since fascia is a thin covering of every organ and muscle in the body, connecting everything in the body from the top of your head to the bottom of your foot, a head trauma can affect your whole body, not just your head. On Valentine’s Day in 2014, I experienced a major concussion when I passed out in the bathroom. I hit my head on the base of the toilet and on the ceramic tile floor. I could feel that the fascia responded by winding tight around the brain, making me feel like I was in a vice grip. The fascia spiraled around my head affecting my ears, sinuses, and my eyes. I had no depth perception. The fascia winding tightly around the muscles in my jaw created TMJ pain. I could feel the effects of the tightening fascia on my throat, vocal cords, and shoulders. The resulting wrapping of the fascia tightly around the spine and sacrum affected the fascia on the IT Band and knee which in turn affected the feet. Tightly wound fascia restricts blood supply to the affected areas and creates pressure on nerves. As a result, I experienced numbness in parts of my legs and feet. I believe God has used this experience to learn first-hand about the treatments for concussions and how myofascial release therapy can have a major impact on restoring health.

Until you get the fascia unwound and your brain rebooted through kinesiology, restore balance with acupuncture, the aftereffects of the concussion - having “brain fog”, balance issues, depth perception challenges, etc. - will remain. Due to the extreme connectedness of the fascia throughout the body, until fascia is completely released, it will continue to bind down onto organs and muscles throughout the body. Therefore, once we get our bodies restored, we need to do maintenance on our bodies just like we do maintenance on our vehicles. When fascial release is part of our maintenance, it allows us to recover faster when we have physical trauma. My recovery was wonderful with restored brain function, vision, and balance. THE EASIEST WAY TO EXPLAIN “BELIEFS” is to say what beliefs are NOT. Beliefs are NOT facts.They are only interpretations or judgments we make about ourselves, our experiences, and the world around us. They are the meaning we assign to things. For example: If you weighed yourself and your weight did not change this week, it is a verifiable fact. But I’ve heard people take that fact and conclude all sorts of things, like their weight means that their diet is not working and they’ll never lose weigh, or that they’ve failed. Again. And that they just should stop trying. And—you get the idea. However, these conclusions are not facts. They are beliefs about the fact that the weight number hasn’t changed. Here’s the rub: believing any one of those conclusions can be accurate information or just plain wrong. A nutrition plan may be spot on. The person may have missed a couple of workouts that week. Or they may be retaining water from something they ate the day before. Or they are carrying undigested food. Or it could be they have put on lean tissue. That one number (weight) really isn’t very much information after all! It’s a fact, but it’s not a useful fact. Why do we care? Because sometimes our beliefs are actually holding us back. They can make us feel frustrated or hopeless or even mess with our self-confidence. WHAT CAN WE DO? We can install new beliefs into our minds!
Like loading new software in your computer, we can install new programming in our brains. We were not born with any beliefs about anything. We have acquired these beliefs over time and through conditioning. Here are some beliefs we’ve heard in the studio: •“Everyone is bigger in my family.”“It’s my genetics.” •“We all get the same belly.” •“I’m just getting older.” •“My doctor said I should just get used to it.” The first thing we need to do is change how we talk to ourselves. We are always listening, so we need to choose carefully! Start with a focus on the higher level beliefs •It’s Achievable (Possibility) •I Am Able (Capability) •I Must Achieve It (Necessity) •I Deserve It (Worthiness) •I want It (Desire) •I Expect It (Expectation) •I Am Willing (Willingness) Try using those phrases when you speak to yourself. “I want to, I am capable, I deserve, it’s possible to find a better job/fit in the clothes in my closet/move to a nicer home.” I guarantee if you talk to yourself this way all the time, your brain will change and your life will change, too. THE HOT WEATHER IS STILL HERE. Hot weather and culinary herbs have been taking off all summer. We are on the heels of seeing fresh basil. With the abundance of these amazing aromatic herbs it is a shame not to use them. Parsley: An herb that reminds me of parsnips or carrot leaves. A clean and earthy flavor that pairs well with fresh salads, tomato, and garnish soups. Cooked with fish and poultry but pay attention, don’t overcook parsley as it will lose potency and color. Combines well with onion, mint, garlic, thyme, & chives. Medicinal use: The medicinal effects are in Parsley’s volatile oils and flavonoids, which are responsible for her notable flavors. Assists with urinary tract infections and GI distress. Basil: One of my all-time favorites for tea and to pair with Tomatoes and fresh made cheese. Basil is sweet and peppery with a slight anise-like after taste. Best used in salads, dips, soups, sautéed with greens, and topping all pasta dishes (a must!). Pair with garlic, onion, cilantro, mint, and fennel. Anti-oxidant & anti-microbial benefits are strong in fresh basil. Traditionally used to stimulate appetite and ease the stomach. A tonic for Kidney function and a rinse for mouth ulcers. The major volatile oil in Basil is estragole.

The tall and beautiful Dill with her fragrant flower clusters and delicate leaves offers a slightly licorice flavor. Best to use in beet soups, fish stews & chowders, pickle recipes, and fresh cream cheese dips. Combine with garlic, mustard seeds, parsley, and coriander. A dill infused tea in the evening may assist with insomnia. Peppermint: a busy plant with its long stems that seems to take over all herb beds. You have to contain peppermint as she is sure to run! Best to use in sweets, whipped cream, fruit salad, making a fresh lemon aioli, and as a garnish. Combines well with marjoram and lemon. Peppermint makes a wonderful tea to drink before or after a meal, or when a cold or congestion is present, and helpful during liver detox. Rosemary: Who doesn’t love to have the pine like shrub in their garden? Rosemary has a deep aromatic scent with floral undertones that is best used in roasts and herbal vinegars. Pair with root vegetables, meats, and potatoes. A strong infusion on Rosemary can assist to ease headaches, used externally to wash wounds and assist with eczema. Oregano is short and shrubby with a bold and deep flavor. The fresh herb is much stronger than in her dried form. Similar to

LOCAL FAMILY RECOVERING FROM TRAGIC ACCIDENT
PLEASE JOIN US HERE at Roswell Magazine to pray for a friend who recently underwent a tragic accident while vacationing in Gulf Shores, Alabama with his wife, four children and extended family. They were there in August to celebrate a family reunion – as this large, close family has traditionally done every other year. Stephen Franke and his daughter Abby were trying to catch “one last wave” before heading in for the day; but the wave was so powerful it picked him up and threw him down head first into the shallow waters. He nearly drowned, and he was pulled ashore by his daughter with no pulse and water in his lungs. Thankfully, there were two nurses in his extended family, who began CPR and resuscitated him. After surgery in Pensacola and again at Shepherd’s Center in Atlanta, Stephen is now paralyzed, only able to move his thumb; yet the family is praying for recovery. To add to this tragic situation, he had not yet been on the job long enough to qualify for disability insurance, so the family is facing astronomical medical bills that may devastate his family financially. His four brothers have set up a GoFundMe page to help offset some of the costs. Earlier this Summer, Stephen Franke was hired as General Manager of Brookfield Country Club here in Roswell. He tackled the job head on while he and his wife Rene juggled carpool, children’s activities and all the active things busy parents do. Now, his family’s life has been turned completely upside down.
