A Southern Trilogy Historic House Museums
Right here in Roswell, Georgia - just 20 miles to the north of Atlanta - three historic houses speak volumes about the history of the American South from 1839 to the present day: Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation. A SOUTHERN TRILOGY Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall, Archibald Smith Plantation This trio of antebellum museums is open to the public for visits and exploration. Closely situated in the historic district, each home shares its cultural bounty and holds its own place in the heart of the Southern story.

Barrington Hall (1842)
Roswell’s founding family
535 Barrington Dr, (770)640-3855 In the 1830s, Roswell King and his son, Barrington, co-founded the colony now known as Roswell. Barrington built his home on the highest point overlooking the town. Today, this home is recognized as one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the country. It’s also listed as one of Atlanta’s 50 Most Beautiful Homes. Barrington Hall has the only Antebellum Garden in metro Atlanta open to the public. This home’s front parlour invites visitors to sit, play period games and enjoy the ambiance of this beautiful house.
Bulloch Hall (1839)
A love story...and so much more
180 Bulloch Ave, (770)992-1731 Built by Major James Stephens Bulloch, grandson of Georgia’s Revolutionary Governor, Archibald Bulloch, this home is one of the most significant houses in Georgia. It was here in her childhood home that Mittie Bulloch met

a young man from the prominent Roosevelt family of New York. She captured his heart and they wed at Christmastime in 1853. This was the union that produced U.S. President, Teddy Roosevelt. The couple’s other son, Elliott, fathered Eleanor, who became the wife of Franklin and the nation’s most beloved First Lady. It was Eleanor who forever changed the role of women in the White House. There’s no mystery why Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, sought out the last living bridesmaid and wrote extensively about the wedding for the Atlanta Constitution Magazine. Bulloch’s reconstructed slave cabin, with its living quarters and exhibits, provides opportunities to explore and recognize the role of African-American slaves in the history of Roswell.
Archibald Smith Plantation (1845)
Success, family tragedy and more
935 Alpharetta St, (770)641-3978 In an effort to escape the insects and summer heat of coastal Georgia, Archibald Smith traveled to Roswell in 1845 with his wife, children and thirty slaves. They built their home on a 300+ acre plantation. Tragedy struck when Smith’s eldest son, Willie, died during the Civil War. Perhaps it was Willie’s death that caused the family to hold tight to their other possessions. Whatever the reason, Smith Plantation is filled with the family’s original artifacts. See how time has altered this home from the time of slaves working in the fields to a very differ-

The home’s first owners, the Dunwody family, named it “Phoenix Hall” when its walls were rebuilt in 1844 after a devastating fire. It was later the home of A.J. Hansell, who named the house “Mimosa Hall” after the lovely trees on the property. In the early twentieth century, Mimosa Hall was

During the Civil War, 400 mill workers, mostly women and children, were arrested for treason and sent North to uncertain fates. A monument to these events stands in Sloan Street Park. General Sherman wrote at that time, “Arrest all people connected with those factories, no matter what the clamor, and let them foot it, under guard, to Marietta, whence I will send them by cars to the North. The poor women will make a howl.”

EXPLORE NATURE
ROSWELL GEORGIA IS LOCATED on the northern banks of the Chattahoochee River in an area the Cherokee Indians once called Enchanted Land. At one time, the Cherokee and Creek people lived, hunted, and fished along its banks and named it River of the Painted Rock. The River and its tributaries supplied power to run the mills. Today, a 7-mile linear park along the Chattahoochee River provides the opportunity to follow one of Georgia’s most unique resources as it winds its way through Roswell. Explore Roswell with a hike, stroll, bicycle, canoe, kayak or raft. Keep a pair of binoculars handy for bird watching and perhaps a journal to log the flora and fauna you find along your way.
Explore Nature
Through the Eyes of a Cherokee Stop by the Roswell Visitors Center (617 Atlanta St) and pick up a free copy of ‘Through the Eyes of the Cherokee,’ a history and nature guide. This booklet includes a journal area to take notes and is useful as you explore the woodland trails. Remember you are entering the home of a people who once lived a way of life which is foreign to us now. “Somewhere near you stands an elegant ‘grandfather-tree’ from which bows were carved – and from another, arrows. From other trees within your view came ‘aspirin,’ ‘pasta,’ and tough dependable cordage … all from the inner bark. There was a day when this knowledge was known to every man, woman, and child. These were the Native Americans who once inhabited the land.” (Mark Warren – Through the Eyes of the Cherokee) Wear appropriate shoes and don’t forget your binoculars and camera.

Decidedly Southern
E
Experience true culinary flare as you embark on a one-ofa-kind gastronomic adventure in Roswell, known for its chefs’ decidedly Southern twist on traditional dishes. Here, everyone is a local – or at least made to feel like one! Roswell restaurants collectively offer a neighborhood ‘come as you are’ vibe while each staying true to its distinct culinary personality. As you walk past, peek into the windows of a street-side pub and you’ll catch a quick view of a business deal closing over a juicy burger dripping with sharp cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon and accompanied by the World’s. Best. Fries. If that makes you crave a burger piled with tempting toppings, you could choose a shaded deck with beautiful views of Vickery Creek, which are as inspiring as the milehigh sandwiches offered.
44
THE BIG KETCH
If you can put the burger out of your mind and shop a little longer, you’ll begin to witness the bustling midday lunch crowd gathering in the next restaurant with young women chatting over citrus vinaigrette laced kale salad dotted with golden raisins and crowned with charred salmon.
RESTAURANTS
FOODIE That will entice you to make your way over to a European -style market offering specialty wines, cheeses, cured meats and locally-grown fruits and vegetables. You won’t have to ask for directions when the smell of BBQ lures you to follow your nose over to a community icon where barbecue is smoked so seriously Southern you’d think they were creating works of art. For a date night, nothing beats the dimmed lights and candlelit ambience of an establishment showcasing French cuisine amidst its white and silver decor or a butcher-inspired steakhouse which treats its guests to fine
protein cuts, charcuterie and market fresh seafood. A preference for locally sourced farm-to-table ingredients is evident in almost every establishment you choose downtown. PaMOXIE BURGER trons are delighted with large portions of mouth watering Southern fried chicken paired with honey butter cornbread muffins; and it seems every top restaurant offers its own secret recipe for shrimp and grits. But save room for dessert! A few blocks away, you must try a slice of traditional Southern pies hosted in a barn - perhaps its apple and buttermilk creation or a new local favorite, the Frankenberry, which is stuffed with pears, cranberries and apples. Enjoy!

YOUR SOUL MATE HAS POPPED THE QUESTION, AND YOU’VE SAID, “YES!” Or, maybe your company is celebrating its five-year anniversary or your parents their 50th? Perhaps there is an upcoming milestone birthday, a new baby is arriving or the big family reunion is coming up. Are you in charge of planning this year’s regional sales meeting? Careful planning is required, but what should you do first? Second? Your immediate reaction might be to pick up the phone and start lining up the where, when, who and how, rushing to secure vendors. In order to make your special occasion one that will create lasting memories, first just relax, take a deep breath and ask experienced professionals for help.
U
Usually, the first step in the process is to nail down a venue. What do you envision - historic destination, wildlife sanctuary, antebellum home, nature lover’s experience? Roswell wears many hats (gloves too, if an occasion calls for them!); and consultants can’t wait to help you arrange your event. Southern culture and hospitality are expressed in events hosted in authentic historic sites or antebellum homes. If you prefer petals over the past, there are beautiful
gardens for outdoor events blooming (literally!) just for you. Situated on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Roswell might appear to be favored by Mother Nature, so you couldn’t go wrong if choosing a venue on a scenic hilltop or with river views. For a more contemporary occasion, Roswell’s ‘modern spirit’ shines through art galleries or the industrial ambience of lofts with original, exposed brick and beam ceilings.
The following is a comprehensive list of Roswell’s special events venues.
