Summer.

it is my favorite time of year. I look forward to spending time with family and friends while relaxing in my own backyard, or taking a trip to the Jersey Shore. Ever since I was a kid I loved a good car ride somewhere, anywhere. As I grew older, that love became an outright passion for travel. There is nothing like the experience of jumping on a plane and within just a few hours being in a different country, immersed in a new culture, filled with exotic foods and expressive languages. My love for travel has taken me to Europe several times and to numerous islands in the Caribbean. Each trip has given me a different perspective on how truly unique each one of us is, and at the same time – how we are all so similar. Ironically the area I have travelled around the least has been my own country, our United States. With that being said, I am thrilled to announce to all of you the maiden voyage of the Local Living Travel Club. Our first trip will be a visit to the Lodge at Woodloch in the serene and picturesque Pocono Mountains. This lavish resort and spa caters to your every need while you experience absolute rejuvenation of your mind, body, and spirit. We hope you will join us. It will be one of the most revitalizing gifts you can give to yourself or a loved one. Below gives you a taste of what we have in store. This will be the first of many adventures we are planning for you throughout the year. Stay tuned for more information from us, and keep your eye on our Facebook updates and ‘tweets. Enjoy your summer days and safe travels in the meantime.

editor’s note I love my job. And I love my kid. And so sets the stage for Extreme Juggling. No, it’s not another reality TV show, but for many of us, it is life in the summertime. Even if your job is the stay-at-home version, and I know that is work since I did that too, it’s a challenge to keep it all going when school is out. There’s a bunch of new hours on your doorstep needing to be filled, and yet you suddenly have less time than ever. It is precisely because free time, genuinely relaxing, enjoyable time is such a rare commodity that we’ve put together an issue of delicious ways to spend it. And just because everybody eats doesn’t mean that meals can’t be experiences: meals should be events! The best flavors of the season are taken to the next level in our featured places and profiles. Ah, and the cupcakes! The cupcakes… Maybe you will want to explore some of Tim Furlong’s favorite hot spots after catching his show on NBC 10.

We had a fantastic time interviewing him on location in Philly while he was filming his next show for Foodies. And we toured Jon Gosselin around Doylestown while he adjusts to being recently returned to real reality. (And yes – wherever Jon went, he was the event.) If the beach is your thing, do not pack the bag without something from Good Reads. And if by chance you are planning to leave those demanding kids behind, try your luck in any number of the new, luxuriously appointed destinations on the Atlantic City boardwalk. From over-the-top Revel to fresh renovations at the Borgata, the whole town is looking quite bright and shiny these days. The Fork-1-1 had a great time with “spiritual leader” Steve Grasse – can’t leave out the beverage. You’ve seen the clever, beautiful bottles. Now meet the man. Enjoy every second, make every bite count.

ormtique, LLC dba MyCustomYogaMat.com is a small woman-owned local company that creates custom embroidered products. Now, when your product ends up on Oprah Winfrey’s list of favorite things like MyCustomYogaMat did, you know you’re onto something. In addition to the featured spotlight in “O: The Oprah Magazine”, these highquality products have been highlighted on countless blogs, magazines and even the Today Show. With 20 mat colors and 18 embroidery thread colors it is easy to create the perfect color combination reflective of one’s own style or mood. Alison Korman, founder of Dormtique and MyCustomYogaMat.com believes that color is one of our vital senses that can either rev us up or calm us down. The choice of the color palate for the yoga practice can be changed as easily as choosing another mat. Many choose to have their name or monogram embroidered on the mat, some opt for a single letter, and many lock in on inspirational words like “Believe”, “Om”, or “Breathe”. Technology has enabled digitized logos for businesses, associations, and organizations to be embroidered onto yoga mats.

10

Local Living July | August 2012

Yoga studios and spas have ordered dozens of custom embroidered yoga mats to use as “loaners”, to showcase their brand. In addition, a custom embroidered mat from www. MyCustomYogaMat.com makes a unique and thoughtful birthday, bridesmaid, or spa party gift. MyCustomYogaMat’s 74” long and ¼” thick deluxe yoga mats are latex-free and free of harmful dies or heavy metals. Unlike printed mats, the embroidery thread creates a textural effect on the mat and the colors will not fade with use. The mats are durable and washable. Dormtique, LLC owns and operates www.MyCustomYogaMat.com. Dormtique LLC is based in Ambler, Pennsylvania. Additional line extensions include; MyCustomPetMat, MyCustomPlaceMat, and MyCustomBabyMat. good reads Make sure one of these page turners is resting on your beach towel alongside your Local Living Magazine ... Don’t forget the sunscreen! 11th hour By James Patterson

Lindsay Boxer is pregnant at last! But her work doesn’t slow down for a second. When millionaire Chaz Smith is mercilessly gunned down, she discovers that the murder weapon is linked to the deaths of four of San Francisco’s most untouchable criminals. And--it was taken from the evidence locker in her department. Anyone could be the killer--even her closest friends. (Review from www.goodreads.com.)

The Fifty Shades Trilogy: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed

Brave New World

By Aldous Huxley Review by Kieran Tebben What if there was a world where everyone was happy all the time? In the World State, this is exactly the case. In a society based on total happiness and satisfaction, no one experiences suffering, which can vanish by simply popping a pill. A strict caste system keeps every citizen in place, but could this last forever? When “savages” who do not belong enter the utopia, things are shaken to the core. Can rebellion damage such a stable society, or will total happiness always triumph?

Second Chance

By E.L. James Review by Sharyl Volpe

By Jane Green Review by Bess Newman

Of course we had to include this. Who hasn’t heard of it these days? The story has sparked a colorful debate in literary circles as well as between fetish experts about the ties between power, desire and control. All three books in the Fifty Shades series revolve around the same unique relationship between a brilliant, handsome Christian Grey and young college lit student Anastasia Steele. They are hopelessly attracted to each other, but his demands include her total submission, without a detail spared. This is an engrossing exploration of desire and the confrontation with the murky details of a troubled past.

Holly is married with two children but not sure if she loves her husband. Olivia’s long term boyfriend left her suddenly, and she hasn’t gotten her life together since then. Saffron is a successful actress in Hollywood, but she’s in love with a famous married actor. This once-close group of friends has drifted apart over the years, but they are suddenly jolted back into touch with each other after the tragic loss of another friend. Their friendships are renewed as a result, and they come to help shape each others’ futures in unexpected ways.

The Secret to Success? Local Business Gurus Put Quality First by Sharyl Volpe

hen an overtly high trending of anything happens anywhere, someone inevitably utters the phrase, “There must be something in the water.” Well, if that something is success, innovative entrepreneurs right here at home have been drinking deeply from the well. Bet you’ll be surprised to see how productive our own backyard has been…

Hank’s Gourmet Beverages: Bill Dunman, GM, Owner

If you like root beer, you know that every brand out there has a unique twist on the classic flavor. When Bill Dunman, a soft drink distributing maven, met Hank Salvatore and sons, beer kings in distribution, it was a match made in beverage Heaven. Salvatore needed to deliver his signature non-alcoholic Arizona Iced Tea, and Dunman was the man for the job. Enter L & M Specialty Beverages. Together, both teams cornered all of Pennsylvania with the wildly popular tea. By 1993, feeling the surge in “new age” beverages with healthy, gourmet ingredients, they decided that there was a niche to be filled with a brown bottle root beer. After exhaustive research to find an existing brand they could stand by and coming up short, they collectively decided to make their own, from scratch. After two years of planning, research, flavor testing and scrupulous brewing, Hank’s Gourmet Root Beer was born. And great care was devoted not only to what would fill the brown bottles, but they knew the bottle itself had to be something special. If you look at a Hank’s bottle today, you will see the difference. The double-cartouche, hash marks, the foil-stamped logo and graceful neck speak volumes of the joy inside without a single sip. The root beer did well, but as any marketing genius knows, product placement is key. The single flavor prevented the right to eye-catching, 24

eye-level real estate in stores. As the favorite child of mother Necessity, Invention kicked in again and in 1996, three more flavors of Hank’s Gourmet Beverages were introduced. Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Birch Beer, Black Cherry, Orange Cream and Vanilla Cream have garnered not only American fans, but international markets too. Canada now has Hank’s and stores as far as Australia carry the gourmet beverages in the beautiful bottles, which are manufactured by Verallia, a global leader in creative glass. In 2007, Hank’s bottles won the coveted Glass Packaging Institute Award. I asked Bill what he attributes

most to the success of a small business breaking into an industry traditionally ruled by global giants. “We just use the best ingredients we can possibly source, and more of them.” The company also takes special pride in the attention to detail over packaging. “Some people take it for granted, the work that goes into having just the right look that sets your superior product apart. People appreciate the tactile feel of the bottle, the look of the label, and our proprietary labeling method. All of that in addition to our nuanced flavors. People know when they order Hank’s from a high-end restaurant or buy it in the delicatessens that they are

in for a treat.” Using real cane sugar in the right combinations with all the good stuff, it’s practically a dessert. “Treat yourself with Hank’s.” Go ahead, you deserve it! Be on the lookout for more tasty combinations in near future. Bill’s favorite Herr’s snack? “I like the plain chips best. The same way I like my coffee.”

Bassett’s Ice Cream: Michael Strange

It was 1983 when Michael Strange, great-great grandson of Bassetts’ founder, entered the family business. In 1989, Michael was named President, and in 2007 Michael became CEO. When we spoke, I asked him if he imagined as a youth that he’d be at the helm, or was he like a lot of kids “in line” who wanted no part of the operation. He was in the latter category. “I had no intention of working in the family business. I graduated college as an accountant, and worked for three years at Price Waterhouse (the name at that time) first. After that, when I was looking for new work, one night my mom and grandfather invited me to dinner. It was a set up. They came at me with a full-court press.” Every once in awhile, intervention does its job. 2011 marked 150 years in business. The continuous evolution of products and flavors, and partnerships with the likes of WMMR’s Preston and Steve (they developed the famous Gadzooks! flavor) help keep this company going. Not only has Bassetts been served in China since 2008, but it’s also been known to be enjoyed by President Obama at the Bassetts counter in the Reading Terminal Market! In keeping with tradition, there’s something new coming soon. Be on the lookout for Bassetts Belgian Chocolate Dipped Caramel Sea Salt Ice Cream Bar.

Mr. Strange’s favorite flavor? “Butterscotch Vanilla!”

Herr’s: Ed Herr, President

In 1946, 21-year-old James Stauffer Herr invested $1,750 in a small potato chip company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In the wake of his recent death in April 2012, Herr’s Foods is currently bringing in more than $250 million in annual sales. Products are distributed to nearly a dozen states and are enjoyed in over 40 countries abroad. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Ed Herr, son of James, who is the President and Spokesperson of the tasty enterprise. “Many people have told me that I’ve got big shoes to fill. My response to them has been: ‘I am not going to fill them. I am going to shine them.’” What was it like to be The Spokesperson for a company that is a household name? “It’s different than you’d think. It’s more or less all fun. When I was asked to take the role, I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll be that person that sells potato chips.’ There’s not a lot of burning issues.” Ed said that, in fact, what he hears when he’s out and about is that customers love the products, but they especially love that Herr’s is a familyowned company. “We are built on a very simple but action-oriented mission: grow sales profitably by safely providing the best products and services. Simple.” With so many varieties of Herr’s goodness, I had to ask Ed his favorite. “Can I pick two? I love the Unflavored All Natural Kettle Chips. They’re cooked in expeller-pressed sunflower oil and sea salt. And the other is something I just had at the Phillies game last night, although my grandson can’t eat them, the Red Hot Potato Chips.”

Just Born

Among their well known confections are PEEPS® Brand Marshmal-

low Candies, MIKE AND IKE® Brand Candies, HOT TAMALES® Brand Candies, and GOLDENBERG’S PEANUT CHEWS® Brand Candies. With almost 600 associates in Bethlehem and Philadelphia, PA, these classic favorites are marketed primarily in North America. All Just Born candies are made in the USA. In 2009, Just Born opened its first retail store, PEEPS® & Company, in National Harbor, MD. Few products have achieved the iconic status of PEEPS®, the yellow, chick-shaped marshmallow confection beloved by children and adults alike. But, as popular as PEEPS® has become, it is only one of the many delicious products produced by Just Born, an 87-yearold, family-owned confectionery. The Just Born candy tradition actually began in 1910 when Sam Born emigrated to the U.S. from Russia. A candy maker by trade, Born used innovative technology to produce chocolate sprinkles, known as Jimmies, and the hard chocolate coating for ice cream bars. In 1916, Born invented a machine that mechanically inserted sticks into lollipops. In 1923, Born opened a small candymaking and retail store in Brooklyn, New York. He marketed the freshness of his line of daily-made candy with a sign that declared, “Just Born.” Not long after opening the Brooklyn store, Born invited his brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, to join him in the business. The company thrived in spite of the economic depression of the 1930s and, in 1932, moved its operations to an empty printing factory in Bethlehem, PA. The company continued to grow, aided by several key acquisitions. In 1935, Just Born acquired the prestigious Maillard Corporation, well known for elegant hand-decorated chocolates, crystallized fruits, Venetian mints, jellies and “the best bridge mix in the country.” In 1953, Just Born acquired the July | August 2012 Local Living

Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster, PA. Although Rodda was best known for its jelly beans, it also made a small line of marshmallow products that included a popular Easter Peep that was made by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes. Sam Born’s son, Bob, who had joined the company in 1946, helped mechanize the marshmallow forming process and Just Born has become the world’s largest manufacturer of novelty marshmallow treats. Hershey’s

Incredible and inspiring, the story of Hershey’s begins with the tale of one determined pioneer: Milton S. Hershey. Raised in rural central Pennsylvania, Milton Hershey would not only become known for the delicious milk

28

Local Living July | August 2012

chocolate bar that bears his name, but for his philanthropy and open-hearted generosity which still touches the lives of thousands. The captivating story of Hershey’s spans nearly a century and a half of industrial and social change. Milton Hershey established his Lancaster Caramel Company in 1886. As part of his product line, the company produced chocolate flavored and chocolate coated caramels (made with cocoa and chocolate acquired from a chocolate making company). In 1893 Milton Hershey visited the Columbian Exposition (World’s Fair) being held in Chicago. There he saw a display of chocolate making machinery. Inspired to make his own chocolate, Milton Hershey purchased some of the displayed exhibit and had it shipped back to Lancaster. He quickly hired two chocolate makers and purchased additional machinery needed to produce chocolate. In February 1894 the Her-

shey Chocolate Company was organized as a subsidiary of the Lancaster Caramel Company. Initially chocolate and cocoa were produced for the Lancaster Caramel Company needs, but by 1895 Hershey Chocolate Company was producing cocoa, baking chocolate and sweet chocolate novelties for the retail market. He located the new entity near the area he had been born, amid the rolling farmland of Derry Township, PA. By the summer of 1905, with the milk from nearby dairy farms and the spirit of hard-working local people, his new factory started turning out delicious milk chocolate. For the farm boy who never had much of a chance at education, providing that opportunity for others was always an important priority. As early as 1909, The Milton Hershey School (then Hershey Industrial School) Deed of Trust was signed November 15 and the first boys were enrolled in September 1910. Hershey and his wife

Catherine established the Hershey Industrial School, which we know today as the Milton Hershey School, and it was a school for orphaned boys. In 1918 and with no fanfare, Hershey transferred the bulk of his considerable wealth, including ownership in the Hershey Chocolate Company now The Hershey Company, to the Hershey Industrial School. Rita’s Water Ice:

The story of Rita’s Italian Ice dates back to the sweltering hot summer of 1984 when Bob Tumolo, a former Philadelphia firefighter, decided to open a small Italian Ice business to

augment his income. He opened his first store in Bensalem, Pennsylvania and named the business after his wife, Rita. Bob and his mother, Elizabeth, set to work – making their special formulation of Italian Ice fresh daily. They collaborated to perfect the flavors and consistency of the frozen treat. The mother and son team added chunks of fresh fruit to the recipes and made sure to throw away any unsold product after 36 hours. The Italian Ice, which was also referred to as water ice, was a big hit with Philadelphians, who are arguably the most discriminating water ice eaters in the United States. Although Bob began by selling the “made fresh daily” Italian Ice from a small porch window, he and his brother John had opened three more stores in the Philadelphia area by 1987

because of increasing demand. Soon, customers started approaching Tumolo, wanting to know how they too could own a Rita’s. So in 1989, Tumolo started franchising the business and by 1996, Rita’s had grown to more than 100 stores in nine states. To chill with more information, visit www.ritasice.com.

Tim Furlong: Just a Regular Guy Who Likes to Eat

im Furlong sits on a stylish wooden bench outside of Sampan, one of centercity Philadelphia’s ragingly popular hot spots. His camera crew angles a huge reflector disk to light Tim’s pale face, intensifying the already-uncomfortable sun rays bearing down on us all at high noon. The host of NBC 10’s Foodies doesn’t bat an eye as he launches into his engaging repertoire of the friendly, witty guy who knows all the cool places. Local Living is following Tim on location while he visits the best restaurants along S. 13th Street.

July | August 2012 Local Living

39

Next, we relocate to Sampan’s Graffiti Bar, tucked into the rear of the restaurant on a private 30-seat open-air patio. Debuting in April 2010, Graffiti Bar serves the same acclaimed Asian food and drinks by famous Chef Michael Schulson, making Sampan instantly popular. A haven for sports fans, fully equipped with TVs and happy hours, the sheltered space is adorned with custom art from renowned Philadelphia spray-paint artists A Lot, Rune and Distort. Furlong joined NBC10 as a general assignment reporter in 2005. As a field reporter, he is hustling down stories out on the streets all over the region, in addition to hosting the now third season of Foodies, seen on NBC10 and NBC Philadelphia Nonstop, the station’s digital channel. It won a regional Emmy last season. How exactly did this evolve? Three years ago, Tim pitched an idea to the network that he called The Nomad Griller, having some core similarities with Foodies. A pilot was shot, but the timing was just not there yet. When it seemed like the concept had finally ripened, the network came back to Tim and offered him, in his words, “A fun, paying position where I get to travel around to neat places and eat good food. Uh – YEAH!” Hello. Previous positions include reporting for Philadelphia’s WPHL-TV, and serving as anchor and reporter for WLNETV (ABC6) in Providence, Rhode Island. He also served as a field producer for NBC News in Washington, D.C. Worthy to note, Tim came from WPHL-TV over to NBC 10 in 2005 when NBC10 began doing channel 17’s 10pm newscast. He still co-hosts the mummer’s parade each year on that channel! “The first time I was introduced as ‘notable food connoisseur’ for the show I thought – WOW. I am neither ‘notable’ nor a ‘connoisseur’ and I still get to do this job.” Foodies is not a rating machine or an advertising ruse for the places filmed. Tim does not critique. Places and neighborhoods are researched ahead of time, and the network chooses locations according to a variety of gauges, from what is new, interesting, historic, to just really, really good places that deserve to be featured. “Since I still report the news, my day starts at 1 a.m. in the morning. It’s non-stop until about mid-day, which works out well, actually, for me and my family, since I get home early. But I am so glad I have the show to do and not just

all news. The news can be so sad, there’s so much bad news. Sad stories, murders, sick kids… Food makes people happy. I am glad I have the mix.” And you can tell. Going from neighborhood to neighborhood highlighting the best happy hours, appetizers, bar scenes, TV sets, décor and -- oh, food! — Tim is good at what he does. You will never pick the wrong place again. In addition to everything else he’s doing, Tim has been serving as an adjunct communications professor at Widener University in Chester, PA since 2004; he gets a real thrill working with the students and helping them get their starts in the industry. He volunteers and proudly supports the Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Billy Mock Foundation. Born in West Chester, Furlong grew up in Glen Mills, PA. He attended American University in Washington, D.C. where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. During college, Furlong had the opportunity to live and work in Belgium. After graduation, he spent time in Costa Rica studying Spanish, and surfing, and eating! Tim is married and lives in Wilmington these days with his wife, Meghan, and two children, Liam and Bridget. “One of the coolest parts about what I do is that since I have two kids, I get to find out who has the best kids’ menus. I have favorite places everywhere my family goes because I know who has the best chicken fingers. And my son will eat pizza anything, so it’s fun to find him new combinations.” If you ever get the chance to hang out with Tim, and I hope you do, you’ll immediately feel like you’ve known him a long time. For a local celebrity with so much skyrocketing momentum upwards, you might expect a different attitude. But this guy is the real deal. Down to earth, casual, caring and above all, really excited about life. “I just feel really, really lucky. It just gets better and better.” Be sure to check out Foodies on NBC10 every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and at various times on NBC Nonstop (Comcast 248/Fios 460/off-air 10.2). You can also see Tim’s show online by visiting Philadelphia Non-Stop at www.nbcphiladelphia .com under Video (search Foodies). And of course, feel free to find Tim on Twitter; he is @tfurlong. Sand Castle Winery:

The Principals of Wine and Dine

T

he Scene: An open bottle and a fresh cooked dinner, now what? Is the wine a good pairing for the food? Local Sand Castle Winery has listened to their customers and created a course where participants will learn how to tweak the flavors of their dish with herbs, spices, salt, and olive oil to match any of their favorite wine! In their “Introduction to Wine and Food Pairings”, you will taste 11 wines and pair them with just the right culinary delights. Sand Castle Winery, nestled on the banks of the Delaware River in historic Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is the purveyor of world class wines with a long and noble heritage. Sand Castle Winery makes all the wines only from its own 100% vinifera grapes. Grape vines planted in rocky soils combine with moderating temperatures of the Delaware River producing ideal fruit for wine making. The vines are exclusively Vitis Vinifera special seedlings cloned from European stock and chosen by master winemakers. 56,000 of these young plants were painstak-

ingly hand planted, one by one. Varieties of grapes included Chardonnay, Johannisberg Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. All vines were selected from the Mosel Valley of Germany and the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions in France. Both stainless steel and French Oak barrels are used for aging of the wines. Stainless steel maintains the intensity of the fruit, while French Oak adds complexity. All vinification is done on the estate in Sand Castle’s 7,000 square foot wine cellar, blasted 30 feet deep into the hillside, to ensure a consistently cool, undisturbed environment. Wine masters are flown in from the Old Country, and combine the great potential of Pennsylvania with the tradition of Europe. The result? While this painstaking attention to quality limits the winery’s production, the wines are unlike anything you have tasted! “Do cool things that don’t suck.” This is the philosophy that defines Steven Grasse, period. 46

Local Living July | August 2012

W

hen asked he will tell you just that and when his own children seek fatherly advice, same credo. Grasse is no Ward Cleaver but he is obscenely nostalgic in his own style of creative forces. Up until 2008 he captained the S.S. Gyro Worldwide, an edgy advertising agency which created campaigns for both local and global companies, from Wawa to Puma. Gone are those days of Budweiser and Camel ads that appealed to the alternative youth culture and made Gyro a brand builder and marketing leader. Replacing the former Gyro cocoon is Quaker City Mercantile (QMC), a distinctive blend of 19th century mercantilism and 21st century brand artistry. Given its description, there is no problem believing QMC is responsible for the creation and production of an impressive boutique distilled spirits portfolio which now properly define Grasse’s genius. He’s no longer building brands from the outside in…he actually creates them from the inside out. One might say Grasse’s advertising career drove him to drink, however he’s not perched at a bar stool all day but lodged firmly in a full-fledged spiritual advisor role, responsible for developing the explosive brand Sailor Jerry Rum. In 1999, QCM took possession of an estate belonging to Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, a tattoo artist best known for his sailor tattoos and pin-up girls. Nothing about this acquisition was going to be warehoused; instead, it was launched into the sky as would be a fireworks grand finale on the 4th of July. The result, the Sailor Jerry lifestyle and storefront complete with clothing, merchandise and an oldfashioned “roll out the barrel” music program for this Caribbean spiced rum. Steven knew the best way to get this product to market was to “let it flow” by giving garage bands cases of product to take with them to their offbeat venues and share with their fans. Toss in a van full of social media efforts and the rest is Sailor Jerry’s second legacy. Eventually the Sailor Jerry brand was sold to William Grant & Sons, an award-winning independent family distiller, for a BIG bag of doubloons. Contractually, QCM agreed to maintain this volatile rum which is one of the fastest growing rums in the world: over 650,000 cases were sold in 2010 and it continues to set records in its category. (For your information, a 750 ml bottle costs about $16.) The next brand to make a splash in the juniper pool is Hendricks Gin, in its dark brown apothecary style bottle and handsome packaging. This sensual gin is a blend of juniper, botanicals, rose petals and cucumber making this spirit rather sexy to say the least and self described as “A most peculiar gin”. It is truly peculiar and well received by spirit critics everywhere. Unique to the Scottish production of Hendricks is the Carter-Head Still, producing small pot batches, and there are only a few of these operating stills in the world. Hendricks Gin is also a leader brand for Wm Grant & Sons and retails for about $30 a bottle. Root, the first to launch into the market, was inspired by Native Americans and their Root Tea recipe which goes

back to early American settlers in the 1700s. As the recipe evolved over the centuries, the potency also increased, especially in Pennsylvania. The flavor profile for Root include: anise, birch bark, cloves, cardamom, and spearmint. These make for countless imaginative beverages as a result. Poured over vanilla ice cream with a splash of club soda in a stem glass, and you’ll have to choose a straw or a spoon! Snap is the second born to Art in the Age also influenced by our German American neighbors in PA Dutch country. Snap is what you would expect if you could drink a “Lebkuchen” which is German for ginger snap. This organic liqueur mimics the flavor of this beloved cookie such as molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon and, of course, ginger. Rhuby, short for rhubarb, is also a Pennsylvania staple during the height of its growing season and made into everything from pies to preserves. Why not a liqueur? This organic small batch spirit is most certainly in a class of its own in any wine and spirit shop. The stores and bar scene are drowning in a sea of flavored vodkas and Rhuby for certain is an exquisite gem of her three other muses Art in the Age siblings. Lastly, there’s the newest Art in the Age, baby Sage. Just as you would expect from her name, she’s a lovely and herbaceous infused spirit with thyme, rosemary, lavender, fennel and sage. This product is literally a liquid spice elixir worthy to compliment any vodka or gin concoction instantly. Imagine a beef stock-laden sage infused Bloody Mary or Mojito with the vim and vigor gently kissing the bruised mint leaves in a tall glass. It should be noted that artwork that adorns each of these handcrafted spirits is the work of Reverend Michael Alan, father so-to-speak to these botanicals beauties. Alan is known for his Pennsylvania Dutch style pen & ink artistry. And what would a family of products be without the little one… Spodee. Yep. Good ol’ White Mule Farms Spodee, a first in the wine category for Quaker City. The muse for this product came to Grasse from Sticks McGhee song, Drinking Wine Spo-Dee O-Dee. Curious to create the depression-era style beverage that takes its name from the song, QCM set out to create this chocolaty moon shine-fortified wine. Interestingly enough Spodee can actually be utilized as a spirit to create hoochy drinks since it’s made with real down on the farm hooch. Spodee is adorably packaged in 500 ml milk jars complete with a cork finish and red cap. So flip your lid for Steven Grasse and Quaker City Mercantile who are really living la vita local, embracing our rich roots of Pennsylvania history and folklore, insisting on quality ingredients, artesian packaging and labeling, and choosing to make it all happen right here in the city of Brotherly Love. Grasse grew up in Souderton and his own father had a Bucks County printing business. So Cheers – to real hometown manufacturing hero – Steven Grasse. Thanks for your messages in the bottles. LL

Melmark: The Home That Love Built by Diane Burns

K

nown as “The Home that Love Built”, Melmark is a thriving community for children and adults diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This unique private, not-for-profit organization located in Berwyn, Pennsylvania serves children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injury, other neurological and genetic disorders, and related challenging behaviors. Its mission is to encourage children and adults with developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential. Melmark also has a program in Andover, Massachusetts, and in both places, each of the 900 staff members treats every person served on an individual basis in an atmosphere of caring, support and encouragement. Working closely with a family is a key part of Melmark’s success. Once a partnership between the Melmark staff and a family is established, together they develop the appropriate goals to be attained by the children and adults served. Whether these goals are educational, therapeutic or social, a specific plan is designed for each individual. Families are encouraged to become part of the support team. Every two weeks, a team of educational and clinical staff reviews an outcome assessment to insure the effectiveness of the program or to see if revisions are needed. The desired result is obtained through a wide range of activities and individual challenges that will help those served reach their highest degree of growth and achievement. Melmark’s experienced staff consistently focuses on finding the right program to meet each individual’s needs. As an example, The Chris Maurer Vocational Program is designed to assist transitional (18-21 year old) students and adults in finding job opportunities they will enjoy. Participants are taught life skills, service training and receive real work experience that will help young men and women rise to their full potential. Along with educational, residential and vocational programs, Melmark has a strong creative component. Children and adults alike enjoy sharing their many talents in painting, music and theatre. Part of the creative program is The Melmark Traveling Art Show. Artwork created by students at The Melmark

This troupe was started in the 1990s with a musical production of Grease. Over the years, The Players have performed many other musicals to sold-out crowds, thunderous applause and standing ovations. Past productions include Annie, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, South Pacific as well as The Wizard of Oz. The Joy Bells, another group of talented adults with developmental disabilities, are a traditional hand bell choir who perform a wide range of musical compositions. Also created in the 1990s, the Joy Bells have performed at the White House three times and many of Pennsylvania’s gubernatorial inaugurations. Since 1966, Melmark has been recognized across the country as one of the leading organizations of its kind. T

here is no denying that the so-called cupcake trend has grown up into

an attractive, well-built industry that Betty Crocker could not have imagined. Even in this age of health-conscious motivations, these morsels of ultra decadence continue to propagate with increasing popularity. They are even challenging good old-fashioned cakes for the most special of occasions, including weddings. Why? Because size matters.

“Sex in the City” made Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street in NYC famous by filming onsite at their corner shop. When you order Magnolia’s vanilla cupcake with butter-cream icing, the pretty packaging contains only 230 calories. Compare that to a cake on a plate instead of in a cup and you could be taking home over 2,000 calories. So, ok – of course you do not plan on eating the whole cake by yourself. But then again, you might. Why take the risk? Even a plain bagel has 216 calories. What’s the difference if you indulge in a few bites of heaven for just another baker’s dozen more? The name “cupcake” comes from the amount of ingredients used to make the cake, and the fact that they were originally baked in cups, typically of earthenware stock. Prior to the 18th century when many people could not read, the practice of naming cakes for their measurements made it simple to remember recipes.

52

Local Living July | August 2012

Around this time, there was also a shift away from weighing ingredients towards measuring them. Along with the convenience of a shorter baking time, making it less likely to burn than cakes tended to in an unregulated a brick oven, it is no wonder this new direction took hold. This example from 1833 shows the genius of the “1-2-3-4” recipe: “Cup cake. Cup cake is about as good as pound cake, and is cheaper. One cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, and four eggs, well beat together, and baked in pans or cups. Bake twenty minutes, and no more.” — American Frugal Housewife, by Lydia Maria Child. Not long into the 1900’s “gem pans” appeared, the precursor to modern cupcake tins. These were sets of small metal cups interconnected by metal arms. Dry boxed mixes appeared around the time of the Industrial Revolution. During the 1940s, the fictitious character and brain child of General Mills, Betty Crocker, lead the campaign to bring convenience and quality into every kitchen. Hostess cupcakes made their debut all the way back in 1919, but it wasn’t the curly-icing topped, cream-filled snack you know today until 1950. Since there have been countless media outlets devoted to cupcakes, from books, blogs, websites and stores to TV shows. The Food Network’s hit show “Cupcake Wars” is in its fifth season. Candace Nelson is a judge on the show, and she’s one of the country’s top cupcake bakers. She is founder of the famous Sprinkles, said to be the first bakery in the US to be entirely devoted to cupcakes. Even Martha Stewart produced a book devoted to the lovely cup-sized cake. You can certainly find chocolate and vanilla out there, the kind you made at home with mom for your birthday party at school, but the new interpretations of those simpler varieties are virtually without limit. (And to think that nowadays most schools don’t even permit sweet snacks for parties. And forget about licking the bowl. It’s as if we all have suddenly realized: “Hey! There are raw eggs in there!” Something’s are better left unknown.)

It doesn’t take long for Jon Gosselin to start working the room.

I 62

t’s a weeknight, but the bar at Doylestown’s 86 West is filling up fast. And Gosselin wants to be in the middle of it.

Local Living July | August 2012

Opposite: Jon Gosselin at Nonno’s Italian Coffee Parlor, Doylestown, Bucks County, Pa. This Page: On location at The Sweet Spot, Doylestown, with Brett Raymer and Wayde King for “Tanked”, Animal Planet.

As patrons look on, some with puzzled looks – “Is that the guy from TV?” – Gosselin, the reality TV star-turnedsalesman, is in his element, passing out business cards and chatting up the crowd. “It’s just a sales pitch,” Gosselin says. “It’s enough being the ultimate wing man.” Nearly three years after leaving “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” the reality show chronicling life raising twins and sextuplets, Gosselin has learned to accept – and in many ways, embrace – his fame. “TV was a job,” Gosselin says. “It paid the bills. It got a lot of stuff done.” Today, Gosselin, 35, is putting his name recognition to good use. He’s joined app developer Creekhouse Apps in corporate sales. And he’s working with Gameface International in Temple to increase awareness for the indoor soccer facility. Media training and experience has made Gosselin a very effective salesman. His product? Himself. “I do the sales,” Gosselin says. “I know the people. That’s what I do.” But just seven short years ago, Jon and Kate Gosselin were just two harried parents doing what other parents do, struggling to raise children. Only the Gosselins were doing it with eight kids, twins and a rare set of sextuplets. In 2005, Discovery Health aired the first of two television specials on the Gosselins. The shows proved so popular that

Discovery made it a series. Jon & Kate Plus 8 debuted in 2007, switching soon after to TLC. The show followed the couple as they raised twins Cara and Madelyn and sextuplets Aaden, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Joel and Leah. Kate became known as the disciplinarian of the family, Jon the easy-going dad. But the relationship soured as the couple – and their relationship – became tabloid fodder. In June 2009, Jon and Kate announced on the show that they would divorce after 10 years of marriage. Kate claimed Jon cheated, an accusation he denies. Gosselin says he left the show because he didn’t want his divorce televised. TLC renamed the show Kate Plus 8 and said Jon would appear occasionally. But then Jon Gosselin sued to block filming of his kids. The network countersued, saying he broke his contract. The parties settled. Gosselin says he has no hard feelings toward TLC or the production team. He says he simply wanted to quit a job that he no longer enjoyed, and the decision cost him. “I lost millions,” he says. “I wanted my freedom.” “It hurt. Now I’m a better person for it.” After the show, Gosselin attempted to get away from it all. “It was just crazy,” he says. “There were 20 paparazzi at my house.” He moved around, spending time in New York, Utah – “I lived at 9,000 feet” – and California. He settled briefly in Montecito, where he lived next to Oprah Winfrey.

But there was one thing missing. Make it eight. “I missed my kids so much,” he says. That brought him back to Berks County. Returning to post-show life, however, was a struggle, Gosselin says. He was dogged by tabloids, who gleefully reported on a series of failed relationships. His divorce was finalized at the end of 2009. Gosselin says he was happy to be back home, but still had to learn to deal with his fame. “It’s weird being famous in your hometown,” he says. “The hardest part was getting a real job and going back into the world. The hardest part was people accepting me into the business world.” He worked construction for a while. Then childhood friend Bill Kiritsis, president of Reading IT firm Omega Systems, gave him a job. Gosselin started at the bottom, in customer support. There, he says, he simply introduced himself as Jon. He says he found his true calling, however, in inside sales and project management. When he left Omega he joined Creekhouse, a Mechanicsburg company that creates mobile informational apps for small businesses and organizations. In addition to serving in corporate sales for Creekhouse, the company is also developing an app to connect Gosselin with fans. Through Creekhouse Gosselin connected with Gameface International, a sports complex known for its fierce dedication to soccer. It’s a game Gosselin knows well. He attended college on a soccer scholarship, and his brother, Tom, is soccer coach at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland. Jon has started a scholarship program there, in honor of his father, to provide tuition to female soccer players. Gameface not only provides soccer instruction, it also provides low-cost day care and a safe place for kids who might not have anywhere else to go, Gosselin says. “I want to create a better environment for kids who didn’t have what I had,” he says. “I will globalize Gameface. But it will be in a kid-friendly genre.” “It’s cool to be a part of it.” Gosselin’s now trying to move on from Jon & Kate. He recently began dating Liz Jannetta. They met in a parking lot, he says, and hit it off. Jannetta, who, like Jon, works in IT and also disc jockeys part time, has three kids of her own – which can make for a crowded house when the Gosselin kids are there. But Gosselin takes it all in stride. “Liz and I do really, really well,” he said. “She’s amazing.” Kate Gosselin recently said the couple have made peace. Jon says their relationship is, at least, a civil one. “Our relationship is primarily about the kids, not much else.” Right now, Gosselin says he’s concentrating on his work,

and on raising his kids. He fights back some tears when he realizes Cara and Madelyn are closer to 18 than they are to the little girls they were when the show started. “In six years, Cara and Mady are gone,” he says. So he spends as much time as he can enjoying whatever time he has with his kids. Even when they’re not with him – he and Kate split their time each month – he finds ways to connect, calling and sending messages back and forth over the social game Draw Something. Gosselin says he doesn’t regret the decision to do reality TV. If the kids decide they want to do another show, Gosselin says they have to ask him first – but he’s unlikely to say no. For the future, Gosselin plans on writing a second book on parenting as a single father. His first book is a biography about his life experiences from the time his children were born. As he looks back on his reality TV time and subsequent fame, Gosselin says he wouldn’t change. “I maybe should have done some things differently, but I don’t have regrets” he says. “I’d rather learn it now than 30 years down the road.” LL Crissa DeBree is a writer based in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

Q& A With Dr. Stephen A. Olenchock, Jr., FAAC, FACS Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery for St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network

be offered a position to come back in a leadership role, with very high expectations, made me proud. The quality of the hospital, the personalities of the people and job satisfaction I feel is tremendous.” Below is an informative outline from Dr. Olenchock of diseases and symptoms that you may be curious about, either out of concern for your own well-being or a loved one’s. “As a large percentage of our current population heads into later years, there has been increase in specialized cardiovascular care. What many people just assume are the symptoms of old age, such as shortness of breath during routine activities or increasing fatigue, are actually signs of heart disease. Once treated, these symptoms can disappear entirely, bringing years of productive life back into a patient’s grasp.”

A

re you a prospective patient in need of the care provided by Dr. Olenchock and his team? If you think you might be, you are in luck. The silver lining, should you receive news of this nature, is that St. Luke’s has been named by Thomson Reuters as one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. Thomson Reuters found that if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of the Top 50, nearly 7,700 additional lives could be saved and approximately 6,500 additional patients could be complication-free. All of this could happen with a savings of more than $1billion. And you can see why St. Luke’s has been included in this elite group of healthcare providers. From the moment you enter the facility, from admissions to post-op, each person you come in contact with is highly skilled in providing you with peace of mind and life-saving care. “We do it every day,” says Dr. Olenchock, referring to cardiovascular surgery. “It is important that our patients know that our experience lends itself to positive outcomes. But sometimes even we step back a moment and reflect that we are stopping and re-starting hearts. It is a huge responsibility, and we are proud to be a part of such an extraordinary hospital where we are successful at it.” For Dr. Olenchock, taking on his current position was a bit of a homecoming for him. “What attracted me to St. Luke’s is that I already knew how great this hospital was. I had spent five years of my post-graduate training here, so to

Q: What is heart valve disease? A: The heart has four valves: the aortic, mitral, tricus-

pid and pulmonary valves. The heart valves open to allow blood to be pumped forward, and they close to prevent fluid from flowing backward. Heart valves are flaps of tissue called leaflets or cusps. Heart valve problems can fall into two categories. Stenosis is when the opening of the valve is too narrow and interferes with the forward flow of blood. Regurgitation is when the valve doesn’t close properly and it leaks, sometimes causing a backflow of blood. Heart valve problems can be congenital (present at birth), or develop later in life. Heart valve problems can result in the following conditions: - Endocarditis Endocarditis is a serious infection of one of the four heart valves. It infects the inner lining of the heart (endocardium) and occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of the body travel through the bloodstream and attach to damaged areas of the heart. - Heart Murmur A normal heart beat makes two sounds commonly described as “lub-dub” which are sounds of the heart valve closing. But if there is a problem, a murmur may be added July | August 2012 Local Living

67

to the normal “lub-dub” which may sound like a whoosh or swish which would then sound like “lub-whoosh”. A heart murmur isn’t a disease but may represent an underlying heart valve condition.

When these symptoms are associated with a heart murmur a person may require testing to see if they have a heart valve problem.

- Heart Valve Disease Two problems can disrupt blood flow through the valves: regurgitation and stenosis. A regurgitant valve, also called incompetent or leaky valve, occurs when a valve doesn’t close properly and blood leaks backwards instead of moving forward in the proper one-way flow. If too much blood flows backward, only a small amount can travel forward to other organs. Stenosis occurs when a valve opening is smaller than normal due to stiff, thick or fused leaflets. The leaflets do not open wide enough and only a small amount of blood flows through the valve. Because the valve is narrower, the heart must work harder to move blood through the body. When a person develops symptoms of a leaky or stenotic valve they may experience new onset of shortness of breath with exertional activities such as walking a flight of stairs. In addition to shortness of breath, sometimes they may also have feelings of chest tightness, light-headedness, or leg swelling.

Q: What is the difference between a Heart & Vascular Center and a cardiologist office?

68

Local Living July | August 2012

A:

Physician teamwork is key to the treatment and management of cardiovascular concerns. At St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Center, patients benefit from seeing a team of physicians from separate specialties of cardiology, including cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists, under one roof. This multidisciplinary approach to care enhances physician communication, allowing patients to benefit from improved diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular disease. For more information on St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular services, or to schedule an appointment, please call 1-866-STLUKES (785-8537) or visit www.slhn.org.

The Latest and Greatest in Cardiac Care Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) St. Luke’s University Hospital is excited to be selected as one of the first institutions in the country to offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) with the Edwards Sapien valve due to their exceptional outcomes and true team approach. TAVR is a catheter-based procedure for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not candidates for conventional aortic valve replacement surgery. The TAVR procedure enables the placement of a balloon-expandable aortic heart valve into the heart via a catheter-based approach (without open heart surgery), thus making the overall procedure much less traumatic for the patient. Such a procedure necessitates the use of the most advanced technology available, and that is why St. Luke’s will be the FIRST hospital in the country to have the new General Electric Discovery IGS 730 Hybrid Operating Room. This stateof-the-art room will allow the entire surgical team to work in an environment specifically designed to address the highly technical TAVR procedure as well as other minimally invasive surgeries.

St. Luke’s Heart Valve Center Revolutionizing the Approach to Heart Valve Surgery St. Luke’s Heart Valve Center is part of a Network-wide Heart & Vascular program that offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options. St. Luke’s University Health Network was among the first in the region to offer minimally invasive aortic valve replacement surgery, and was named one of the nation’s 50 top cardiovascular hospitals by Thomson Reuters for 2012. St. Luke’s is the ONLY hospital in the region to earn this distinction. St. Luke’s Heart Valve Center is distinguished by: • Designation as one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Thomson Reuters • Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement surgery • Comprehensive medical evaluation by heart valve specialists • State-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment options • Team approach to care by cardiac surgeons and cardiologists • Personalized care through our experienced team of professionals • Collaboration with primary care physicians and cardiologists • Among the best cardiac surgery outcomes in the nation • An Experienced Team for Treating Heart Valve Disease St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Heart Valve Center provides the most advanced and effective methods to diagnose and treat heart valve disease. You receive the best possible care from experienced, board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and interventional radiologists. Using a team approach, specialists meet regularly to discuss your care and provide updates on the latest treatments and technology. They work closely with you and our dedicated heart valve program coordinator. St. Luke’s will coordinate your appointments and tests, and answer any questions during every phase of your care, whether it’s in the hospital or on an outpatient basis. You can feel confident you are receiving the best possible heart valve care.

HEALTH & WELLNESS WITH KENT LANE MUELLER, D.D.S. ‘I.V. Sedation’ in Dentistry: How can I take advantage of this to receive all of my required dental treatment?

G

eneral Anesthesia and I.V Sedation in the field of Dentistry has long been associated with Oral Surgery, and most commonly with Wisdom Teeth extractions and Tooth extractions in general. Indeed, the historical development of Anesthesia in general has been largely driven by dental pain and dental extractions. Oral Surgery Residency Programs provide advanced training in Anesthesia to provide comfortable delivery of surgical procedures to the patient in an out-patient/ private office setting. However, there remains a significant portion of the Adult Dental Patient population whose dental treatment requirements are not necessarily all surgical, and do also require a deeper level of anesthesia/sedation to receive the treatment they require. The reasons are many; but, the most common I encounter in my Practice are genuine fear, gag reflex, inability to ‘get numb’, difficulty breathing while holding mouth open, agoraphobia, claustrophobia, an overwhelming scope of required/desired procedures, and the need to accelerate treatment time delivery.

The Dental Practice that I have developed over the years takes the time and preparation to specifically address the requirements and concerns of these select Adult Patients. A Physician Anesthesiologist is provided at chair-side to manage patient anesthesia, comfort and safety, while all dental treatment procedures are delivered under my care. These procedures may include: Periodontal Root Scaling and/or Surgery, Root Canal Treatment with Crown/Bridge preparation, Extractions and Implant Placement, Extractions with the Immediate Provision of Dentures, Bone and Soft Tissue Grafting, Extraction with Immediate placement of a Dental Implant and Temporary Crown within the Cosmetic Smile Line, and Tooth Shaded Composite/Porcelain Fillings. I also provide a mild P.O. Sedation Treatment Program for my Adult patients requiring assistance with anxiety only with less complex dental procedures. I encourage you strongly to visit my website at www. sleepdentisty-mueller.com to access more information on this rather singular dental practice and the services provided to the Adult Community. The office facility is located at the #343 Turnpike Interchange (Willow Grove) to better accommodate many of my patients that travel greater distances to reach us. — Dr. M.

aintaining a healthy lifestyle is not just what you eat and how you exercise. Yes they are ingredients to being successful, however, sleep, how you deal with stress, disease management and your mental well-being are just as important. Health Coaching will create a program of preventative actions that fit your individual lifestyle. Often found in larger corporations, Health Coaching is slowly becoming more commonplace in the private market due to the patients needing to know the facts. Health Coaching creates a plan to help manage diseases, nutrition, exercise and stress to name a few, through a one-on-one consultation. A program is designed with your specific needs at the forefront that fits your lifestyle. If followed closely, these steps will hopefully lesson the need for prescription drugs and doctors visits, lessen stress, improve sleep, maintain the appropriate amount of exercise and change eating habits where needed. It is so difficult for a person to understand all of the conflicting information that is available about disease, exercise, nutritional and stress management. Health Coaching gives patients the opportunity to grasp how this information will impact their lifestyles. Health Coaches are an objective voice to change. “A Health Coach should make sure to create a plan that fits your lifestyle and not force massive change all at once,” says Amy Hewitt, a certified Health Coach and Registered Nurse. “The biggest mistake people make is expecting large results in short periods of time. Dynamis Skin Science Brings You MEG 21: Younger Skin, Scientifically!

T

he mystery of a serendipitous path to success always makes for a good story. While testing compounds, scientists from Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) unexpectedly noticed that one formulation had favorable effects on the texture and elasticity of skin. Further research and development resulted in Supplamine®, which addresses the effects on skin resulting from glycation and oxidative stress. Dynamis Skin Science was established to develop and market MEG 21 products containing Supplamine® to doctors and skin care professionals. Dynamis was originally funded by the Ben Franklin Tech74

nology Center, the National Institutes of Health as well as venture capital, and FCCC. In the beginning, company scientists focused on the discovery and development of therapeutic pharmaceuticals to treat and prevent diabetic complications. “I was a lawyer and a cell biologist.” MEG 21’s founder and CEO, Annette M. Tobia, Ph.D., explains the path leading to her current success. “Since Fox Chase didn’t do diabetic work, I was asked to raise money and to grow the venture capitalists’ investments for the diabetic research.” As it turned out, it was difficult to raise the funding necessary

Before

28 Days Later

to launch a diabetic-focused enterprise due to the fact that these professionals were associated with cancer research primarily up to this point. “We were seeing that kidney disease and blindness due to complications of diabetes were conditions that many older people had that weren’t necessarily diabetic. There was a connection between these symptoms and aging.” This was a key part in illuminating the path to treatment for aging skin. This group of scientists had been accumulating enough data in their research on cancer and diabetes to emerge as experts on aging. “Our technology was discovered serendipitously in the course of disease-prevention research. It beautified skin, but also healed and protected.” Seeing this development as something Dr. Tobia knew she could generate interest in, she went on to focus on skin care. She raised $3.5 million to take Dynamis Skin Science to the next level, with “MEG 21” at the core of the product line. “Many of these new investors had a personal interest in anti-aging products that worked. And what was especially wonderful is that they agreed to allow some of the funds to be routed to continuing the diabetic research.” Why MEG 21? “It’s a funny story actually, and one I bet a lot of people can relate to. 24 hours after we had settled on what we thought was the perfect name, it was bought by someone else. So we had to start from scratch. And you know what? We thought up something even better. Meglumine is the one ingredient that is in every single product.” Voila! MEG was born. And the 21? Says Tobia, “Well, who doesn’t want to look 21 forever?” What makes the MEG 21 line stand out? “We have something that really works. Something that is really good for people. It works to prevent damage, and it stimulates the vital elements of skin that help keep it looking young and healthy.” Dr. Tobia uses it. Her daughter has been using it since her thirties. “It is never too early to start!” muses Dr. Tobia.

A large part of the effectiveness is due to the penetration of the products deep into the skin. “Meglumine is formulated to stay in the skin layers for 24 to 48 hours doing its job. It is completely anti-inflammatory and can be applied to all skin types. “ MEG 21 products are designed to allow the skin to naturally rejuvenate while at the same time slow down the ongoing aging process by inactivation of a bad sugar. The natural inactivator of the bad sugar is included in Supplamine™, the patented special formula. The bad sugar causes collagen and elastin cross linking as well as deep skin inflammation. The bad sugar is made by the skin and is also present in the body from certain foods in our diet. Supplamine™ also includes a good sugar that results in decreasing the bad sugar even more. Both the good sugar and the inactivator are delivered to multiple layers of the skin by liposomes. The proven effectiveness of the product line shows in the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and reverses the appearance of aging. (Published results and in a peer reviewed research journal are available.) “MEG 21 products have been tested on over 150 human volunteers. Improvements in skin appearance and texture are evident in many people at two weeks and reach statistical significance at 4 weeks – without irritation!” says the doctor. Dynamis Skin Science has its offices in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. A percentage of the sale of the Dynamis Skin Science products is paid to Fox Chase Cancer Center to support continued basic cancer research. Sustainable Restaurant Guide by Stephanie Berardi

hen it comes to food, you love meals that are healthy and tasty. With so many places to eat these days, simply pick the closest to where you live. And look for “local, organic, and seasonal ingredients” on the menus. Sustainable restaurants are popping up everywhere, many equipped with a garden on the premises. The latest trend is saving them thousands of dollars in expenses, while helping to save our planet. Fresh and natural ingredients taste so much better when they don’t have to be shipped from across the country. These restaurants have carefully thought out every detail, including their recycled decor. Food waste is a big contributor to our landfills and when it breaks down, it creates Methane gas, which is harmful to the air we breathe. Sustainable restaurants value waste as one of their biggest assets. Instead of throwing out food scraps, they use composting companies to help divert scraps from the landfill. The trash makes new, healthy soil, which then can be used to plant more gardens.

Senior Summer by Diane Burns

W

ith the heat and humidity of the summer upon us it is important for us seniors not to allow the warm weather to totally dictate our lives. Since seniors are more susceptible to heat related ailments, we must take certain precautions when we choose to do outdoor activities. These are common sense precautions like drinking plenty of liquids to keep hydrated, doing strenuous chores early in the day or after the sun goes down, and making sure you rest in the shade periodically. All this being said the heat of the summer should not keep us from being active and enjoying life. It just means that we need to put a little extra thought and planning into what activities we will participate in. We can still do our gardening, play golf, bocce, or tennis but we need to be cognizant of the weather and especially the humidity. If walking is a favorite activity of yours make sure to carry water with you and sit in the shade once in a while. Avoid any outdoor activities during the hottest time of day. If traveling is your passion, there is no need to forego that pleasure. Again, just be aware of the heat and humidity and take the necessary precautions. Some simple ways to enjoy the outdoors would be to take your juice and coffee outdoors in the early morning hours of the day and watch the sun rise. Gardening helps to recall fond memories of days gone by, or maybe it would be enjoyable to pack a simple picnic basket and just sit in the shade in the park with some friends. You could simply enjoy an outdoor concert in the cool summer night. But if you can’t enjoy the outdoors to any extent, you can still maintain an active life indoors. Here are a few activity suggestions for you to experience:

a Start or join a book club – great for socialization and challenges the mind a Every community seems to have a Bingo night – who doesn’t like this game? a Take up a craft – it stimulates the mind and can even be profitable a Card games are popular with both men and women – helps to connect with others a Get your friends together and play some board games – everyone has a favorite and they bring back fond memories. Also challenges the mind… a What about finally doing something with all those pictures you have – plant yourself in a nice cool room and organize and protect them in albums a Take up painting or quilting – there are many places where you can take lessons a Join a summer bowling league – great for socialization and physical activity As you can see with a little planning and some thought and most of all a little common sense, the heat of the summer months will not dictate your life. Those long, hot days will have you active as well as engaged in some new and exciting adventures. You will connect with some new acquaintances and enjoy some activities you may never have tried before, ones that will give you pleasure and maybe a few new challenges. Whether your activities take you outdoors or keep you indoors, enjoy life and STAY COOL! LL Diane Burns is a freelance writer currently residing in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. St. Christopher’s Foundation, Hospital for Children Prescribe Fresh Food

A

cross the country, pediatric physicians are feverishly writing prescriptions for medications to combat the adverse effects of poor nutrition. At St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, thanks to a new collaboration with St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children dubbed FreshRX, a group of forward-thinking doctors are handing out a new type of prescription – one for apples, carrots, broccoli and a whole host of farm-fresh foods. A pilot program in its early stages, FreshRX is an extension of a successful Farm to Families food share system that makes healthy, farm-fresh food available and affordable in North Philadelphia year-round. Now, in an unprecedented show of support for nutritious eating, St. Chris physicians are writing prescriptions for weekly Farm to Families fresh food boxes, for children seen through their Center for Child and Adolescent Health, GROW Clinic, and Healthy Lifestyles Program. With prescription in hand, families pick up their Farm to Families fresh food boxes weekly from St. Christopher’s Hospital or any of four other public distribution sites in their North Philadelphia neighborhood, strategically positioned in low food access areas. “North Philadelphia is at the apex of this country’s food crisis. Not only is it one of the nation’s hungriest neighborhoods, but it’s also among the 10 poorest, and poorer than any other in Pennsylvania. And the unfortunate dichotomy is that a staggering 70 percent of children here are overweight or obese, due in part to their lack of access to healthy food options,” said Jan Shaeffer, executive director of St. Christopher’s Foundation. “Our FreshRX partners at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children are helping us make a vital step toward total health integration, directly connecting food and nutrition to medical care.” Weekly Farm to Families food shares are available in $10 and $15 boxes, brimming with the season’s freshest fruits

and vegetables. Farm-fresh eggs, meat, poultry and seafood can be purchased at an additional, but still affordable, cost. First-time FreshRX patients can redeem a voucher for $5 off one box, while a loyalty program underwritten by Shire Pharmaceuticals makes the 10th box free of purchase. FreshRX patients and other Farm to Families participants also receive food and nutrition education at the distribution sites. Subsidized by St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children, instruction includes on-site cooking demonstrations, taste tests and recipes aligned with weekly boxes, plus educational handouts on topics ranging from food storage to nutritional values. From the arty floating gold leaf mobiles in the towering entrance spaces to the burlesque club on the casino floor and the first-of-its-kind no smok-

ing policy, Revel is bent on standing out from the crowd. Instead of wooing day trippers, Revel is betting that the beautiful people will pay $300 and up for one of 1,898 rooms, all with ocean views and perks like an in-room technology tablet and elegantly spare furnishings. Not only can you get a massage at the de rigour spa, but it will be delivered in a setting designed to echo the ancient bathhouses of Rome. Entertainment is the name of the game in these glitzy halls, which include a four story nightclub, a 5,500 seat star powered arena and one of the best cover band venues in town, the amphitheater tiered Social. But the real fun starts at one of the star-chef-driven eateries, with not one, but two Iron Chef winners in the mix of the resort’s 14 restaurants. Philly’s own Jose Garces is behind Amada, Village Whiskey and Distrito Cantina, where an honest to goodness taco truck serves up Mexican street food and margaritas (See Local on Location!). Then there’s Marc Forgione and his beef palace American Cut, chef Robert Wiedmaier and his Belgian style gastro pub Mussel Bar, chef Michel Richard’s French O Bistro and Wine Bar and Central and Azure, with seafood by chef Alain Allegretti. So much fabulousness abounds you’ll need more than a weekend to explore. www.revelresorts.com 2. Sleep Better at Borgata: This swank casino and spa just spent $50 million on renovations, including a stem to stern redo of all 1,566 rooms. New technology and an iPod docking station give way to 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets

and Fili D’oro linens. Even though Revel is the new kid on the block, Borgata still delivers the most headliners, 40 summer acts ranging from Sting to Beck and Wanda Sykes. The first A.C. spot to do edgy, this adult playground still offers glassenclosed shower stalls built for two and sassy “Tidy Up/Tied Up” doorknob hangers for each room. www.theborgata.com 3. Strike Gold at the Nugget: Out with the Trump Marina Hotel Casino, in with the $150 million Golden Nugget, with new check-in area, shopping plaza, spa, renovated guest rooms, lounges and nightclub and showroom. Live Bar is the spot for music and cocktails, with the Chart House a safe bet for upscale seafood. Head upstairs the Ronnie Wood Art Gallery, an exhibition of 29 paintings, drawings and limited edition prints by the Rolling Stones veteran guitarist dating from 1983 to the present. www.goldennugget.com/atlanticcity 4. Save big at the Atlantic Club: Formerly the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, the Atlantic Club has rebranded and is positioning itself as a “locals” or low-budget casino. Prices have been lowered on everything from room rates to restaurants to gambling minimums. Snag a room midweek for as low as $75, reason enough to stay more than one night. www.atlanticclubcasino.com 5. Bally’s and Legends: If you think Cher is dealing cards at the next table, you aren’t exactly seeing things. Bally’s is pulling out all the stops with its Legends in Concert show, debuting a newly renovated theater and a ‘Dealer-tainer’ themed gaming pit, including wardrobes from the star lookalike

Iron Chef Jose Garces is one of the Revel celebrity chefs. Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly brings live music and burlesque onto the Revel casino floor Borgata’s 1,566 rooms are all brand new 8. Garden Pier Renewed: Located just across from Revel on the north end of the Boardwalk, this home to the A.C. Historical Museum and Art Center is sporting $2.55 million in renovations, including new facades, lighting, decking and fencing. This sleeper attraction is worth a visit, and should benefit from primo real estate across from the city’s newest casino.

show. The show features a revolving line up of “stars,” and at $32.50, is one of the best entertainment values in town. www.ballysac.com 6. Steel Pier: The legendary family entertainment pier, once home to the diving horse, is undergoing a major transformation, opening this season with new rides, including a helicopter ride, and a new midway and food court area. The Pier will eventually be partially enclosed and open year-round. www.steelpier.com 7. Sammy D’s Overlooking The Pool at Harrah’s: Arguably the hottest scene in A.C., The Pool goes from a lively family oasis by day to a backdrop for Kim Kardashian by night – the diva hosted a party Memorial Day Weekend. Watch the action without being in the middle of it with an “outside” table at Sammy D’s, a 24/7 casual place where chef Rob Ryan channels chef Sam DeMarco’s unique take on hearty comfort fare. You’ll love the cheese steak dumplings, lollipop wings and for dessert, the cakes are as tall as Sammy D himself. www.harrahsresort.com & www.sammyds.com

9. Surf and Sand: While beach bars have been sizzling since the longstanding ban on serving alcohol on the sand was repealed, it’s still a surprise to see just how fab these spots can be. Faves are The Beach Bar at Trump Place and Sammy Hagar’s spot at Bally’s and new this season, The Worship Surf Club opened last week at Showboat, a funky shabby chic scene inspired by the iconic SoCal beach bars. Located directly on Delaware Avenue Beach at the Boardwalk and States Avenue, one of only three beaches that permit surfing in Atlantic City, Worship Surf Bar has both patio and beach service available. 10. HOB’s Best Kept Secret: The nation’s busiest House of Blues, which announced a partnership with celeb chef Aaron Sanchez for its signature Southern meets South of the Border casual Crossroads Restaurant, has another dining option you might not know about. Although private in other cities, the upscale Foundation Room with creative small plates by chef David Suscavage, is now open to non members. Don’t miss chef specials like outstanding grilled bacon wrapped dates and the Asian accented Mirin glazed grilled sea bass with purple yam. The vibe is chill and stylish – dress to impress. everaging a radio talk show and online media, Peter Buchsbaum and Vincent Sirianni avenge homeowners and would-be homeowners everywhere by piercing the nightmarish murk of today’s real estate market with the gleaming light of factual information. Real Estate Reality Radio, “the most important hour of radio”, airs every Friday from 9 to 10 in the morning on WBCB 1490AM. The call in show is dedicated to dispelling the myths associated with real estate and finance in the marketplace. Peter is active online too, and you get to see the color of his bowtie change every day on his blog www. peterbuchsbaum.com. Self-proclaimed “guy with a bit of an attitude,” Pete puts it to work for his client relationships. He and Vince, the “affable, funny, best-friend” co-host, know that finding the right house is a very emotional experience. “It is something you know when you see it. Walking up the front walk you feel it.” But they advise to keep emotion on a short leash when it comes to getting into the arrangement that is right for you. Unfortunately, so many are not in such a good place on the other side, either. This is where Vince and Pete excel. “I believe that people are mainly looking for guidance that will help them make an informed decision.” And their callers are proof. “When we started the radio show, we weren’t exactly sure how it was going to take shape,” Pete reflects. “The majority of our callers are at their wits’ ends trying to keep their heads above water without a clue about what to believe or where to turn. That’s where we are providing the most help.” Whichever side of homeownership you are on, be sure to look up Pete and Vince at Gateway Funding for information you can trust. HOME & GARDEN

Feasting on Alfresco By Pattie Krukowski

S

ome of my fondest memories are of times spent grilling and dining with family and friends in the tropical retreat my parents created in the backyard of our South Florida home. Just ten steps from the sliding glass doors facing the backyard, they built an electrified, screened-in room that rested on a poured and painted cement floor. The vinyl, corrugated roof extended over an additional area to shade a charcoal grill, ice cooler, camping stove and blender. Inside housed two distinct areas. The first, a dining set where we shared countless meals and played ridiculously competitive penny poker. The second, a lounging area defined by several benches made cozy with beach towel covered cushions to flop on after dragging yourself out of the DIY pool kit my father assembled. The

92

Local Living July | August 2012

ladder from the custom built cedar sunbathing deck led to a patio stone walkway past several beds of umbrella trees which created a living fence of privacy from our neighbors who sat a mere 40 feet away. Walkways were framed by railroad ties my father and uncle conveniently “found in the woods. All this took place on a parcel of land not measuring more than 7,000 square feet and all this was dreamt up and painstakingly fabricated by two very creative individuals, numerous friends willing to work for grilled fish and keg beer, and one local 84 Lumber store. Fast forward to today. Award winning landscape design and construction companies specializing in pools, hardscapes and outdoor structures make the most loved, indoor spaces green with envy. Custom cabinetry, restaurant

quality cook tops and grills capable of rotisserie roasting a Thanksgiving turkey while steaming fresh artichokes are just a dream away. Outdoor stainless steel wine refrigerators big enough to hold catering trays and 55 inch flat screen TV’s are defining elements in today’s top of the line alfresco kitchens. Humble backyards are being transformed into entertainment spaces that rival the most luxurious of resorts, making one beg for a stay-cation. Depending on your personal taste, you can choose from a number of styles of structures to dictate the boundaries of your outdoor kitchen and living space. Permanent walls are transformed with the use of innovative and avant-garde glass “NanaWall” systems. Open air pergolas covered in flowering vines and veiled with billowing drapes remind us of that week

spent in Napa. Perhaps a simple knee wall of stone surrounding a patio, leaving nothing but a ceiling of stars to gaze, is more your style. Building with synthetic, virtually maintenance-free products appeal to some while others are drawn to natural, salt of the earth materials. Create a conversation space using strategically placed outdoor living room and dining room furniture. Set the mood with a fire-pit or water-element resting on a radiant heated puzzle of thermal blue stones in various shades, shapes and sizes. Indoor/outdoor “Turkish” rugs complete an outdoor room when lying on a stamped concrete floor made to look like natural stone. State-of-the-art outdoor grills and cook tops come in all sizes and configurations. Kalamazoo brags with a “don’t just grill, create envy” tagline and rightly so. Their products contain a hybrid grill that lets you burn both wood and charcoal simultaneously and an artisan pizza oven that can bake a Neapolitan style pie in three minutes or less. Lynx offers their ProSear Grill, which has an infrared variable burner allowing you to sear a baseball steak then “throttle back” to prepare delicate seafood. A perfect addition would be their warming drawer to keep finished foods toasty until you’re ready to serve them. The “Big Green Egg” has been impressing outdoor chefs for years with their modern-day evolution of ancient clay cooking vessels which provides the ability to grill, smoke and bake at exact temperatures and if you’ve ever been lucky enough to savor a pork butt that has been smoked for eight hours in one of these contraptions, you’ll add one to your list of “must haves”. Gracious hostesses who cater to the” juice box” crowd by day and the “mojito of the moment” crowd by night know the importance of serving up a cold one. Refrigeration, icemakers and beverage dispensers contribute a whole new convenience when incorporated in an outside space. Perlick has a patented 48 inch Signature Series which combines 12 cubic feet of refrigeration with a number of configurations including their most popular: a beer dispenser capable of allowing three types of draught to be served from one unit. So tonight, put the game on the big screen, turn the ceiling fan on to blow the mosquitos away and practice sliding frosted mugs down the long granite bar to your parched patrons munching chipotle smoked chicken wings hot off the “Egg”. Who knows what you’ll be cooking up tomorrow night. I think grilled oysters and clams accompanied by a chilled Viognier sounds like a good start. You choose the rest. FINANCE

Financial Planning for College By Adam Soloff, CFP™, EA

W

ith the long, fun-filled days of summer in full force, your family is probably enjoying weekends down the shore, barbeques and pool parties. School is the furthest thing from their minds. But while your children enjoy these carefree weeks before a new school year begins, it’s a good time to make sure you’re prepared for the pinnacle of their education—college! There are many college savings plans out there—and they are not all created equal. With the cost of college rising exponentially each year, and an unpredictable economic climate ahead, your focus should be on growth, protection and flexibility. Choosing the right plan, and starting as early as possible, will allow you to finance the higher education experience of their dreams by making the most of every dollar. The majority of college savings plans today are 529’s. Like 401k plans for retirement, 529’s help amass money for your child’s or grandchild’s college education with a unique combination of benefits. There are two types of 529 plans—college savings and prepaid tuition. A 529 college savings plan lets you save money in an individual investment account. It offers an unmatched combination of features, including tax advantages, flexibility, and a wide use of funds. You can change beneficiaries; move funds around, use them at a wider range of colleges or even gift them. Even though the contribution limit is the highest among savings plans of its type, enrollment is open to anyone, regardless of income. You may enroll directly or require the help of a financial professional, depending upon the plan. But a 529 college savings plan has its drawbacks. You relinquish some control of your money and, because returns aren’t guaranteed, roll the dice with the investment portfolios you’ve chosen. Your account may gain or lose money.

A 529 prepaid tuition plan lets you pay tuition expenses at participating colleges at today’s prices for use in the future. Instead of an investment portfolio, you purchase tuition credits guaranteed to be worth a certain amount of tuition in the future. You get the same tax advantages and flexibility in beneficiary changes, rollovers and gifting. However, benefits can be reduced after enrollment if investment returns do not keep pace, and your child’s choice of schools can be limited. Other college savings options to explore include Coverdell education savings accounts for all levels of education, including elementary and secondary school; custodial accounts, which allow your child to hold assets under the watchful eye of a designated custodian; and U.S. savings bonds issued by the Federal government. Just keep in mind that college savings is a significant part of your overall financial plan, and therefore greatly impacts you, your children and your legacy. To make the best decisions regarding college savings, it’s important to consult a financial professional with any questions. LL Adam is the Director of Investment Services and Financial Services at Soloff Wealth Management, a financial services firm with three divisions; Personal Financial Consultation, Insurance, and Employee Benefits. www.SoloffWealth.com. or those who like to nosh and possess a passion for art it’s time to double your pleasure! Intricate ice and chocolate sculptures, watermelon ships, baskets, flower carrots, butterfly apples and fruit arrangements are succulent examples of palette complementing pallate. It’s not a new phenomenon. Archaeologists found food drawings on the walls of Egyptian pyramids as some believed the food paintings nourished those in the after life. According to documented information Renaissance Era Italian artist Guiseppe Arcimboldo used fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, tree roots, plants, sea creatures and books arranged on a canvas to resemble his subject. This was long before the Surrealist movement of art. Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and other famous artists also painted fruits, vegetables, pizza and wine. In 1965, artist Dieter Roth experimented with food smearing chocolate and bananas on canvas, and creating piles of chocolate and butter for sculptures. He sealed sausage slices between glass to decay and mold and watch how the work evolved, labeling it ‘biodegradable art’. But, the piece de resistance of food art has soared to new heights. Realism can’t get any more real than the amazing, delectable works of art created by Buddy Valastro, award winning master baker, cake decorator extraordinaire and star of the TLC reality show Cake Boss. Carlo’s Bakery, in Hoboken NJ since 1910, includes ‘la famiglia’, which is important to Buddy. This includes matriarch Mary Valastro, her daughters, sons and their spouses, who have expanded the business that was bought by his father, Bartolo Valastro Sr., in 1964. Since Valastro Sr.’s untimely passing, his son Buddy Jr., has once again made Hoboken a hot spot along with Frank Sinatra. He has taken the world by storm with time honored quality of old world mixed with modern innovative techniques. Carlo’s Bakery offers the best tasting wedding, specialty cakes and baked goods in New Jersey. “Cakes can definitely become works of art and that’s what I do every day at Carlo’s,” says Buddy. “I learned from my father what it takes to turn a plain cake into something special. My wife’s 30th birthday cake and NASCAR cakes are two of my favorites. They are definitely one-of-a-kind.”

Buddy’s full size cake creation of his wife, Lisa, has to be the most fabulous work of food art ever! From her flowing blonde hair and saucy red lipstick, to the bling around her neck and draped around her ebony gown, he captured his beloved. And, let’s not forget the stunning rose bouquet! What other husband can create his wife in flour, sugar and eggs? Now that’s what I call ‘sweet’. “For my NASCAR cake, I replicated a NASCAR racer using 2,500 sheet cakes,” explains Buddy. “And my Transformer cake weighs in at 2,000 pounds!” July | August 2012 Local Living

Andy Warhol, avant-garde father of pop culture, introduced his selection of Campbell Soup, Coca Cola, Brillo box paintings and prints. You and your family are welcome to visit Carlo’s Bakery, or you can pre-order online and pick it up. Carlo’s Bakery, truly a landmark, has been featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, The View, The Sopranos, the New York Times and beau coupe magazines. The late, great ‘60s Andy Warhol, avant-garde father of pop culture, introduced his selection of Campbell Soup, Coca Cola, Brillo box paintings and prints. Using food as art, he also painted bananas, hamburgers, ice cream cones, apples, strawberries, and a tomato ketchup box. He created silk screens of the world’s most famous celebrities and coined the phrase, “In the future everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” “The subject of food is almost as important within Warhol’s work as it is for one’s daily sustenance,” says Matt Wrbican, Chief Archivist at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pa. “He created images of food, the rituals around its preparation and enjoyment across

the four decades of his active creative life. His early career of the 1950s included numerous illustrations for magazines, drawings for the Amy Vanderbuilt Cook Book, and the comical riffs of haute cuisine in his own Wild Raspberries book. His images of Campbell Soup Cans are iconic early masterpieces of Pop Art, and he made a bruised banana synonymous with Rock and Roll. “His later career includes a series of works depicting chocolates plus grapes, lemons, cantaloupe and other fruits, images of beverages such a Perrier water and Warsteiner beer, as well as commissioned labels for Mouton Rothschild wine bottles and a menu design for Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant.” Bon Appetite as you feast on art! ummer is here and it’s time for sun, fun and state festivals. This month Local Goes Local is visiting the great state of Maine and two of its most popular festivals. We begin our journey by traveling to the city of Yarmouth, 15 miles north of Portland, for the annual Clam Festival. This festival, attended by thousands every year, begins on July 20th and continues for five days. All of the money raised goes to the nonprofit organizations in the town such as school groups and community services. The theme of this year’s festival is “Favorite Children’s Books”. The parade on Friday will feature floats depicting those books. On Saturday the 21st, one of the favorite aspects of the festival begins with the Clam Shucking Contest, professional as well as amateurs compete for bragging rights as the “Best Shucker” in the state. The firefighters of the town compete in events like bucket brigades and an old-

fashioned tug-of-war with a fire hose. Another popular event is the Lobster Crate race. Sunday is race day, with adults participating in a 10K race, and children competing in the “Healthy Kid, Happy Kid Fun Run.” There is also a “diaper derby” for crawlers and toddlers. Housed in a large tent you’ll find arts and crafts created by the townspeople. All weekend you will find plenty of good food to eat and lots of fun to enjoy. We continue with our festival hunt by heading to Rockland, Maine for their Lobster Festival beginning on Wednesday, August 1st. The activities commence on that day with the coronation of the Sea Goddess and her Princess court. This group along with their naval escorts and King Neptune will be on the lead float of the parade on August 4th. More than 25,000 visitors attend this festival every year to see more than 20,000 lobsters cooked and enjoyed.

A craft tent will house the wares of vendors and local crafters featuring pottery and hand-woven baskets. Along with the crafts the festival features a fine arts tent with the works of local artists and photographers. All types of music can be heard all weekend long from jazz, and oldies, to Celtic and folk. The kids will have fun donning a costume for the parade and competing in the Cod Fish Carry contest or a ride on one of the amusements. There is quite certainly something for everyone to do. And if not, after all, who can resist a lobster on your plate with melted butter running down your chin? I know I couldn’t. Whichever festival you choose (or maybe you’ll visit both) you and the entire family will experience fun-filled days and some really good food.
