ou hold in your hands the inaugural issue of Local Living Magazine under Blue Water Media! I’m extremely proud to announce that I am not only at the helm as publisher but as owner. More than three years ago, I started pitching the concept for Local Living to business people, community leaders and respected colleagues. Although I’ve been fortunate enough to find success in my life, I was humbled by their instant enthusiasm. They were simply inspired by my energy and vision for this venture. To all who have offered good wishes and supported Local Living over the years with advertising, I am beyond grateful. As publisher of Local Living I have always tried to capture the heart and soul of our local communities by visiting and building relationships with my advertisers and readers. Through school events, local charities, foundation fundraisers and media partnerships Local Living was able to grow as a respected publication.
No matter the resources at hand, a single individual cannot accomplish an undertaking of this kind; I didn’t do this alone. The carefully chosen, super-talented Local Living team shares my passion for the magazine; we’re all on the same page with regard to creating a fun, exciting and informative publication for the region. The stories we bring you will show the character, creativity and resilience of our business owners, community leaders along with some extra special people like you; I guarantee we will continue to uplift and surprise you with our unique content. Local Living pledges that we will continue to stay true to our mission: to celebrate and brighten Your Home. Your Community. Your Life.

W
hile renovating a 15,000 square foot for resale home in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, my creative contractor husband went above and beyond the ordinary when he designed the master bathroom. Created as the room’s focal point, he custom built a 7-foot by 5-foot by 2 ½-foot deep, mosaic tiled, masterpiece of a soaking tub. The “his and her” sinks flanking a mahogany and glass antique armoire stuffed with stacks of fluffy white towels and bowls of heavenly scented bath-salts complemented the tub’s purpose. The 15-foot high domed ceiling, supporting a 12-arm candle chandelier, accentuated the center-of-attention tub. Even the double, 6-foot tall doors that led to the two headed, six wall jet steam shower took second stage to that tub. We had the privilege of residing in that extraordinary dwelling for two years; when I indulged in a soak, I would literally float off
16
Local Living June 2014
the bottom of that amazing cauldron, which is no small feat as I am no small girl. Topped by a meringue of bubbles, candles aglow, champagne bucket less than an arm’s-length away—that tub was seductive and soothing. Six years and several much smaller project houses later, my husband and I had a new favorite tub. It was a twentyfive dollar, powder blue, foldable plastic infant tub from ‘Babies “R” Us’ we purchased for our newborn boy. Inflatable, flexible and shaped like whales and ducks, baby tubs that conveniently fit in your kitchen sink create some of the most precious, and during colicky times, the only sane moments of baby and parents’ day. If you’re in the market for the most adorable infant tub ever, check out a “Blooming Baby Bath”. It comes in a variety of colors and is made from super soft and plush materials and is shaped like a flower with cushy petals for sprout to snuggle amongst. After the bath, just
wring it out and toss in the dryer. Pictures taken with your little one cradled by this whimsical blossom will surely be cherished for decades to come. If you’re in the market for a bathroom renovation, you have a generous number of choices in which to scruba-dub-dub. Bathtubs are available from the common to the extraordinary. Ask yourself: to jet or not to jet? Do I want round, rectangular or corner shaped? Should it comfortably fit one person or more? There is even a tub for the ultimate techie. The insanely cutting edge “La Scala T650 Entertainment Jacuzzi” is about as pimped out as a bathing vessel can get; so much so that I wonder if it’s for real or just urban legend. Its round spaceship cabin shape houses a 48 inch, high definition flat screened television, DVD player, AM/FM and CD stereo, underwater lighting and surround sound. It even comes with a floating remote control. Rumor has it there is a three to four month wait time. This huge wow factor to your lavatory comes with an almost $40,000.00 price tag. Need something portable? Yes, I said portable. Check out the inflatable, portable “Softub”. It can be enjoyed indoors and out, brags minimal energy consumption and weighs less than 75 pounds. Depending on which model you choose, there is room for two, four or six people, the largest equipped with underwater LED lighting available in a number of colors. Perhaps you are updating an 18th century farmhouse. Clawfoot tubs can be purchased from antique markets and refinished. For you DIYers, HGTV has a complete list of materials needed to do so, followed by a 13-step instruction guide on-line. Word to the wise, these cast iron antique beauties often tip the scales at 400 pounds plus so buyer or transporter beware. In addition, new plumbing supplies including handheld, tub filler and shower faucets are readily available to insure your historic vessel is functional. For those of you less than enthusiastic about the real deal, consider purchasing a new, easy to move light weight acrylic, vintage clawfoot imposter. If I could design the ultimate environment to house a fabulous tub it would include French doors or perhaps a NanaWall system that could be left open to a private courtyard or balcony. Boxwood hedges, and a vine covered pergola roof would ensure secrecy. Landscape lights softly glowing and simple white cushioned, weathered teak chaise lounges invite après soak. Perhaps this dream will be made into reality in the next house. Pattie Krukowski is a freelance writer and interior decorator currently residing in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Paris Style By Susan Taylor
O
Paris breaths style. Having recently returned from several weeks in the French countryside and Paris proper, my camera roll and Instagram pages are bursting with stylish subjects and examples of European beauty. From the ladies room in the Paris airport to the quaint neighborhood patisserie just outside our apartment, style abounds. This city, so full of history and architecture, can steal your heart away in a moment. You really can’t turn a single corner without falling in love with it. Sweet shops are lined with artistically detailed, finely glazed tarts with glass- like fillings. Chocolate curls are placed in perfect rows on miniature cakes. Don’t think the butcher shops
are to be left out! Freshly cleaned and prepared chickens grace the window with pink and gray talons, tucked just so. Bistro chairs and tables line the street in perfect charm, and soon enough, stylish French men and women will be closely seated at these tables so commonly seen along the street. A trip to Le Bon Marche, one of the oldest department stores in Paris, boasted style from the metallic mustard in the gourmet section to the couture fashions calling my name. This city has no shortage of style. Pure, living style. Whether it’s desserts too beautiful to eat, ancient cathedrals with delicate spires, window boxes brimming with color, macaroons lined in foil boxes, rows of engaging pink dresses, or modern crayon colored chairs at the airport, Paris knows style. Style. Paris. Love. Susan Taylor is the Owner and Designer at Blackeyed Susan.

Why Buy New? by Janet Bonenberger
D
eciding to buy a new home or existing home is only the beginning of a long list of decisions that a buyer must make before spending a night under his or her new roof. Here are several good reasons to consider purchasing a new home verses a used home as you take the next step. 1. Modern floor plans—Open concept living, generous closet space, larger bathrooms, larger windows, higher ceilings, 1st floor Owner’s Suites, and convenient laundry areas complement buyers’ active lifestyles and are not typically found in older homes. 2. Customization—New construction homes provide the latest in design choice, structural options, and the ability to choose finishes, colors, and styles allowing buyers to personalize their dream homes to match their exact budgets. As the first homeowner you are not buying someone else’s problems, or living with a previous owner’s styles or cleaning habits. 3. Personalization, Not Overhauls—Buyers can put money towards their dream countertops or backyard oasis, instead of replacing the roof or hot water heater, repairs and renovations that often come with buying an older home. The most exciting part of a buyer’s life can start on move-in day instead of two years and $50,000 worth of renovations later. 4. Peace of Mind—New homes are built specifically to minimize the need for maintenance, but in the event a problem arises, buying new gives homeowners the peace of mind
that comes along with the Builder’s and Manufacturer’s Warranties. 5. Green (and Lean) Living—Homes built today use cutting edge materials and construction techniques including engineered lumber, high efficiency Heating/AC units and hot water heaters. Water-saving plumbing fixtures, programmable thermostats, and energy efficient, cost-saving appliances result in a reduced carbon footprint and savings that add up quickly. 6. Quality of Life—New-construction homeowners can spend their extra time and money enjoying well-planned neighborhoods designed with community in mind. Modern developments often incorporate open space, walking trails, and play areas into new communities, encouraging socialization and healthy living Deciding to buy new is a great first step but, don’t forget the devil is always in the details! Take the time to closely examine and compare the Standard Features that are included with each home. Finally, buyers should always do their homework on their builder—ask for references from clients or township officials and research their customer service records! This is a great time to be buying a new home and embarking on such an exciting adventure. After 27+ years W.B. Homes is still ‘Building Your Neighborhood One Home at a Time”. Paying Your Taxes Is No Fun
FINANCE
By Adam Soloff, CFP®, EA | Soloff Wealth Management
N
ow that tax day has arrived and 2013 tax returns have been filed, we can assess the impact of the fiscal cliff. Remember the fiscal cliff: the deal in Washington that raised taxes and averted the fiscal cliff at the beginning of 2013? Though it may have been a big story a year ago, it may be having a big impact in 2014. Tax collections from individuals in the first quarter of 2014 were up 15%—totaling an additional $35 billion. This higher tax burden may have weighed on consumers and investors this year, as they may have had to forego purchases or sell stocks to cover their tax liability. This is a big contrast to 2013, when tax refunds were up a whopping 15%, amounting to a record share of after-tax income and may help to explain the better pace of consumer spending and market performance in the first quarter of last year. The fiscal cliff was resolved with a rise in payroll taxes for all workers, higher marginal rates for high-income earners, the resumption of the phase-out of exemptions and deductions, and an increase in the maximum tax rates on capital gains and dividends. Much of that was felt last year. But, historically, most taxes that are not withheld during the year from paychecks are paid in the following year in the weeks leading up to tax day. That means that this year we may have seen a significant portion of the fiscal cliff deal impact on the economy and markets with a one-year lag. Now that tax day has arrived, perhaps any drag at stores or in the markets due to the higher tax burden may fade. Already, there are signs the consumer is spending again. The recent report from the Commerce Department surprised with a strong jump in sales at American retailers with a pickup in categories ranging from cars to furniture
and clothing. Clearly, more favorable weather and other factors are helping boost the confidence of consumers, too. The recent reading from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on first-time filings for unemployment benefits fell to the lowest level in seven years. As the economic outlook improves and any selling to fund tax payments subsides, stocks may continue their upward trend. Paying your taxes is no fun, but doing them may be even worse. Does it feel like filing your tax return has become more complicated than ever and you get fewer and fewer breaks? You may be right. After all, 100 years ago the Form 1040 was short and, after a simple income section, it had only seven lines of deductions to complete. Check out this line from the good old days of 1913, when things like losses due to shipwrecks were considered a General Deduction: “4. Losses actually sustained during the year incurred in trade or arising from fires, storms, or shipwreck, and not compensated for by insurance or otherwise” I am hoping you didn’t have any shipwreck losses in 2013. And I think it is likely, with help from rebounding economic strength, that the economy and markets will avoid disasters in 2014. As always, if you have questions, I encourage you to contact me. Once through the door you are greeted with the wonderful aroma from a different, and mysterious culinary world. The peace and tranquility of the orient welcome you to your passport of tastes. The busy hustle and bustle of the fasted-paced mainline melt away as you sit enjoying tea or a beverage of your choice. A true gem for lunch, as their menu is quite extensive, featuring items like Large Bento Boxes and the best Sushi this side of the western world. I tried their signature rolls the THREE MUSKETEERS and the UNTOUCHABLE. Beauty followed by angelic texture and tastes. I also had the opportunity to sample the Tuna Pizza and the Angry Dragon. This unique dish featured an orange edemame sauce that brought out the wonderful tastes of salmon and shrimp. Everything was precision prepared, and beautifully plated and displayed. Beyond freshness, the cascading flavors kept me in a euphoric state. If sushi is your thing you will be in heaven, but the menu goes beyond. Traditional Japanese delicacies with

ome of my fondest memories are of times spent grilling and dining with family and friends in the tropical retreat my parents created in the backyard of our South Florida home. Just ten steps from the sliding glass doors facing the backyard, they built an electrified, screened-in room that rested on a poured and painted cement floor. The vinyl, corrugated roof extended over an additional area to shade a charcoal grill, ice cooler, camping stove and blender. Inside housed two distinct areas. The first, a dining set where we shared countless meals and played ridiculously competitive penny poker. The second, a lounging area defined by several benches made cozy with beach towel covered cushions to flop on after dragging yourself out of the DIY pool kit my father assembled. The

ladder from the custom built cedar sunbathing deck led to a patio stone walkway past several beds of umbrella trees which created a living fence of privacy from our neighbors who sat a mere 40 feet away. Walkways were framed by railroad ties my father and uncle conveniently “found in the woods. All this took place on a parcel of land not measuring more than 7,000 square feet and all this was dreamt up and painstakingly fabricated by two very creative individuals, numerous friends willing to work for grilled fish and keg beer, and one local 84 Lumber store. Fast forward to today. Award winning landscape design and construction companies specializing in pools, hardscapes and outdoor structures make the most loved, indoor spaces green with envy. Custom cabinetry, restaurant
quality cook tops and grills capable of rotisserie roasting a Thanksgiving turkey while steaming fresh artichokes are just a dream away. Outdoor stainless steel wine refrigerators big enough to hold catering trays and 55 inch flat screen TV’s are defining elements in today’s top of the line alfresco kitchens. Humble backyards are being transformed into entertainment spaces that rival the most luxurious of resorts, making one beg for a stay-cation. Depending on your personal taste, you can choose from a number of styles of structures to dictate the boundaries of your outdoor kitchen and living space. Permanent walls are transformed with the use of innovative and avant-garde glass “NanaWall” systems. Open air pergolas covered in flowering vines and veiled with billowing drapes remind us of that week
spent in Napa. Perhaps a simple knee wall of stone surrounding a patio, leaving nothing but a ceiling of stars to gaze, is more your style. Building with synthetic, virtually maintenance-free products appeal to some while others are drawn to natural, salt of the earth materials. Create a conversation space using strategically placed outdoor living room and dining room furniture. Set the mood with a fire-pit or water-element resting on a radiant heated puzzle of thermal blue stones in various shades, shapes and sizes. Indoor/outdoor “Turkish” rugs complete an outdoor room when lying on a stamped concrete floor made to look like natural stone. State-of-the-art outdoor grills and cook tops come in all sizes and configurations. Kalamazoo brags with a “don’t just grill, create envy” tagline and rightly so. Their products contain a hybrid grill that lets you burn both wood and charcoal simultaneously and an artisan pizza oven that can bake a Neapolitan style pie in three minutes or less. Lynx offers their ProSear Grill, which has an infrared variable burner allowing you to sear a baseball steak then “throttle back” to prepare delicate seafood. A perfect addition would be their warming drawer to keep finished foods toasty until you’re ready to serve them. The “Big Green Egg” has been impressing outdoor chefs for years with their modern-day evolution of ancient clay cooking vessels which provides the ability to grill, smoke and bake at exact temperatures and if you’ve ever been lucky enough to savor a pork butt that has been smoked for eight hours in one of these contraptions, you’ll add one to your list of “must haves”. Gracious hostesses who cater to the” juice box” crowd by day and the “mojito of the moment” crowd by night know the importance of serving up a cold one. Refrigeration, icemakers and beverage dispensers contribute a whole new convenience when incorporated in an outside space. Perlick has a patented 48 inch Signature Series which combines 12 cubic feet of refrigeration with a number of configurations including their most popular: a beer dispenser capable of allowing three types of draught to be served from one unit. So tonight, put the game on the big screen, turn the ceiling fan on to blow the mosquitos away and practice sliding frosted mugs down the long granite bar to your parched patrons munching chipotle smoked chicken wings hot off the “Egg”. Who knows what you’ll be cooking up tomorrow night. I think grilled oysters and clams accompanied by a chilled Viognier sounds like a good start. You choose the rest. TRAVEL
Pet Friendly
Vacation Just Wouldn’t Be The Same Without Your Best Friend By Beth D’Addono
A
ccording to the American Pet Products Association, of the 72.9 million pet-owning households in the U.S., 67 percent travel with their pets each year. This can range from taking Fluffy by car to the beach or mountains to stowing her under the seat in an airline approved carrier for a jet setting getaway. I’ve done both recently, taking my Westie Ruby to Phoenix by plane, and driving with her and Roxy, a poodle mix, to and from New Orleans. Both excursions were successful, but there was some planning involved.
40
Local Living June 2014
If you’re flying with Fido, Betsy Saul, co-founder of Petfinder.com, suggests getting your pal used to his carrier a few days in advance of the trip. I did this with Ruby, putting her in her Sherpa soft carrier with treats to get her acclimated, gradually lengthening the time until she seemed at ease. Invented by an airline attendant, Sherpa’s small and medium sizes fit under the seat in a plane. Most airlines only allow one pet, so be sure to reserve in advance, and expect to pay $125 or so each way for the privilege. Also, make sure to exercise your pet prior to the flight and get to the airport early – check-
ing in with a critter takes a little extra time. If you think your dog may get nervous when travelling, there are herbal calming remedies on the market, or check with your vet for options. To find pet friendly stays, check websites like DogFriendly.com and PetTravel. com or www.luxurypaw.com, a pet-friendly hotel booking site that allows you to use your pets weight as part of the hotel search criteria. Many hotels require a pet deposit or add a surcharge, so this additional cost needs to be including in a vacation budget. When I was on the road between Philly and New Orleans, we overnighted at a La Quinta, a budget motel chain with no charge for pets. Download the hotel app to your smart phone, and it will direct you to the closest location. For a swankier sleep, more than 1,000 Best Western properties in the U.S. are pet friendly, but check in advance for specific policies. Ask local contacts on the ground about a vet recommendation, or check www.gopetplan.com/find-a-vet to scope out local veterinarians ahead of time. And remember to travel with your pet’s latest vaccination records, required for visits to a vet or day care. Spend a little time to scope out doggy parks and daycare options before your trip. I knew I’d need day care for Ruby while I was at an all day conference, and found Camp Bow Wow, a franchised doggy daycare and overnight camp with more than 100 locations in North America. In New Orleans, we frequented Cabrini Park, the French Quarter doggy park at the corner of Dauphine and Barracks. Becoming regulars during our month-long stay was a great way to meet people and introduce Ruby and Roxy to a new pack. Check www.usadogparks.com for parks near your destination or download the park finding app on www. doggoes.com to be sure your bud gets the social time and exercise he needs. With just a little bit of advance planning, you’ll find that bringing your dog on vacation is a surefire way to feel at home no matter where you are.

The Fashionable Traveler!
S
pring and summer months are when you and your wardrobe desperately want a little color! The challenge for any true fashionista is how to look and feel cool as the temperature rises. The warmer months can become a nightmare for the fashionable woman as they have less clothing options available in their wardrobe and the beloved black basics seem boring and too heavy. Even packing for the long-overdue and well-deserved vacation can become stressful because of space issues imposed by your mode of travel, on top of the temperature considerations! One simple rule for spring and summer dressing is to take a basic look and modify it from day to night by adding simple pieces to change the fashion focus. For example, the classic day look of a top and skirt with a causal sandal can be switched to a night look by adding a necklace, wearing a higher heeled shoe and tying a scarf to your bag. If you want to wear color but love black, try using white as a replacement to freshen your look for the season. This rule can be applied to packing for summer travel as well as daily dressing for the season. A general guide for packing for a week’s vacation is to take only outfits that are proven and you look fabulous in! This saves you time on getting dressed for the day and allows
you to focus on enjoying your vacation rather than what you should wear. Make sure the pieces you pack are interchangeable and you can add accessories to change the fashion focus. This will also keep excessive weight off your bags to help avoid ever-increasing fees on the commercial flights. If you are a shoe lover, take 3 shoes for day and 2 for night. And always make sure to pack for comfort as well as fashion! Never pack a new pair of shoes NO MATTER how fabulous they look. Sore feet have ruined more vacations than a fashionable woman will ever admit to! Always wear your heaviest pair of shoes (instead of packing them to be carried) and dress in layers for travel so you can dress or undress according to the temperatures on your mode of transportation. This gives you more room in your luggage for items that you need to add based on your trip’s itinerary and, of course, your fashion must-haves for your trip! Always dry clean your clothes before your vacation when possible. The plastic bags are great for traveling and keep your clothes from getting wrinkled on the way to your get-a-way. And remember: As the temperatures rise, keep your cool by simplifying your wardrobe; you will have more time to enjoy the warmer weather! ~ Anonymous Self-Proclaimed Shopaholic June 2014 Local Living

Bathing Beauty.. and the Beast Within By Jenn Hallman
S
ummer brings the glow of sun-kissed skin, the welcomed scent of artificial coconut-infused sunscreen, and the faint sobs of women in the fitting rooms of every retailer across America. Whether you’re a size 2 or a size 22, bathing suit shopping is enough to send you into a depression deeper than the Atlantic. The moment you try on the first one, the fairy tale thoughts of the sand between your toes, ocean breeze sweeping through your locks, and the serene saltwater swims transform into your worst nightmare. You start having visions of yourself on the beach. The sand scorches your feet, the wind whips your hair into a crab-scented rat’s nest, and what you predicted to be a refreshing dip morphs into an awkward fight with undertow where you come out looking like Quasimodo and Ursula the Sea Witch’s love child. Breathless, you claw your way through the surf realizing your left double-d is swinging to and fro out of your top, and you’re mooning all of Avalon. Just before you get cited for indecent exposure, your daymare is interrupted by a knock on the door. “Occupied!” you yell from the fluorescent lit torture chamber you’ve been inhabiting for 20 minutes. You quickly tear off the floral print sausage casing you’ve been crying in, and plunge back into the pile praying you find something that fits. Women of every shape have struggled with this Olympic
event for decades, and why? Maybe the designers of these spandex sheaths are on hallucinogens. They sketch bold prints for us plus size gals making us look like floats in the electrical light parade at Disney World. Our skinny friends have their choice between teeny, weeny triangles held together with shoelaces to cover their hoo hoos and ta tas, or the ever-flattering one piece with so many revealing cut outs they look like shark-attack victims. The very thought of it makes me want to drink myself into a Coppertone coma. The thing is, we’re in this together. As you spend hours going back and forth to the fitting room with, seemingly, the store’s entire selection of water-wear, there’s another woman doing the same exact thing. You can hear the sighs of discontent and frustration with each switch of a suit, and suddenly you don’t feel so alone because the only villain in this story is your inner monologue. That little beast is pointing out every flaw instead of celebrating the beauty you possess. Enough is enough. Just because my thighs touch doesn’t mean I need to wear a sack. It just means I need extra sunscreen on my legs to avoid chub rub. Jenn Hallman graduated from West Chester University with a BFA in English, a focus in theatre & creative writing, and a strong liver. She is also a teacher, actress, singer, comedian, and Co-Founder/Director of Marketing & Outreach for H.O.P.E. Players in Elkins Park.

“Fool Me Once, Shame on Me, Fool Me Twice...I Don’t Think So.” By Jessica A. Pritchard, Esquire
T
he decision to remarry is not made lightly. Marrying a second time is oftentimes very different from a first marriage. The second time around, people are likely to have assets and children from a prior relationship. Recalling the time, money and emotional energy spent during your divorce, friends and advisors might mention a prenuptial agreement. A well-drafted prenuptial agreement can protect these hardearned valuables. Is it right for you? It is if you want to avoid the aggravation and expense of litigating your future. Protect yourself. A prenuptial agreement is a contract between persons who plan to marry. The agreement addresses how property is to be divided or the terms of support/alimony in the event of a divorce or the death of one of the parties. Executing an agreement before being married in order to address what will occur in the event of divorce is not romantic, but it is smart.
What can be expected? What needs to be done?
Once it is decided that a prenuptial agreement is appropriate, the first step is to contact an attorney well in advance of a wedding date. Presenting a prenuptial agreement to one’s fiancée on the eve of a wedding adds unnecessary pressure to an already stressful time. Anticipate providing your attorney documentation of current assets, liabilities and sources of income. To ensure that an agreement’s validity cannot be challenged at later date, the parties disclose their current financial status. Prepare an outline of assets and liabilities and bring recent tax returns to your meeting to help make the
process easier. Your prenuptial agreement can outline how certain assets will be divided between spouses in the event of divorce and if someone will receive support if the parties separate. Will assets be divided equally? Will certain assets, like a family business, be excluded from consideration in the event of a divorce? Will certain assets be set aside for a party’s children from the prior relationship? Will someone receive alimony? For how long and in what amount will the alimony be payable? Negotiating the terms of a prenuptial agreement can become intensely emotional. Suddenly, the exuberant feelings surrounding an impending wedding are dampened by serious discussions of a possible future personal tragedy. Someone may feel slighted and someone else may feel exploited. Being offended by the negotiations will serve no purpose. Both parties should have the agreement reviewed by an attorney so that they may feel comfortable with the bargain reached. Do not be afraid to advocate for what you may need in the future. When people get married, rights are acquired. Marriage is a contract. Specifying the contract, according to terms the parties “can live with,” makes sense. LL Jessica A. Fire Up
Your Fitness Routine By Kathleen McNicholas

’ve climbed the elliptical, joined the spin class offered at a ridiculously early time of day, and volunteered for the company softball team. Truthfully, I am bored with them all. It’s summer time and I want to put some sizzle in my workout. The mall is a familiar retreat from the heat, but today I’m at Montgomery Mall trying to turn it up a notch! Located on the lower floor next to JC Penny’s is the store The Ladies Room. It is a family-owned and operated women’s boutique with a wonderful collection of “unmentionables.” Walk past the lingerie and bedroom accessories to the back of the store and you will find Sensual Fitness, a workout studio specializing in pole dancing. Owner Deloris Benford invited me to take an introductory class with her daughter, Ryssa, a classically trained dancer. While I was timid getting started in this taboo exercise form, Ryssa’s professionalism and candor made me feel right at home.
requires one to lay on his or her back, arms flat at side with palms up and ankles touching. This is also the position one takes when a break is needed, and frankly, I found myself in it often. The class was challenging, however, extremely rewarding. I was empowered by the strength of the women who frequent this style exercise, and in the end, I had the best night’s sleep in months. Brikam yoga has many health benefits. It helps with stress reduction, improved lymphatic system function, increased circulation which leads to higher energy levels, and an overall healing of body and mind. Hot yoga is especially beneficial in the summer. It helps you acclimate to rising temperatures as it activates your internal cooling system. Adventure and risk are at times required for reward, and there is no exception when it comes to the discipline and art of aerial. Think Cirque du Soleil! This hot new exercise trend is sweeping the nation and can be found right here in the City of Brotherly Love. The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts of-
The key to pole dancing is technique. The Intro to Pole class begins with a simple Diva Walk around the pole while dance music pumps through the speakers. The next 45 minutes Ryssa reviews pirouettes and step arounds with each new move incorporating the previous lesson. Students are encouraged to emphasize personal style with technique. It was exciting to let my guard down and learn about this sexy new way to work out. Pole dancing exercises your arms, legs, core muscles, helps with overall posture, and does wonders for building self-esteem. Ladies, grab yourself some clear heels and get to the studio. Hot, Hot, Hot is the cure for your fitness needs when it comes to yoga. Brikam yoga is based in the tradition of Hatha yoga, with one discernable difference: The thermostat is set at 105 degrees farenheit. The 90 minute class includes a series of 26 poses which are sequenced together with breathing exercises. I am a novice when it comes to the practice of yoga, but Rhonda Uretsky at Riverflow Yoga in Lambertville, NJ, welcomed me to her class and put my nerves at ease. Then she put me to work. The classes are designed for all skill levels and participants work at their own pace. The room is long and narrow, with one wall mirrored the entire length. I put my mat down and lay into the Savasana pose. Also referred to as the corpse pose, this position

“Does This Make Sense?” by Matthew Weldon Gelber MS MF T
E
veryone, everyday uses all of his and her senses; I want to enhance how they are used and how one can be in a heightened state of mind. Here are some tips on how to be not only more aware but enjoy your sense and, well, sensibility. As we move through our lives at certain points we get in touch with different senses at different times. I find that its much more important to use all our senses and not let them just become lost. Take for example the sense of smell. Did you know that the sense of smell plays directly into our moods? It’s a fact, and a medical fact just as much as a psychological fact. Surrounding yourself with smells that remind you of a happy time or a vision that brings a smile to your face leads you right into sight. They play hand-inhand with each other. An aroma that allows you to picture a moment in time that you enjoy will bring you to that spot in time. I have clients tell me that they will smell something faintly that reminds them of their grandmother’s house and that brings them back years to a moment in time when they were a child waiting for freshly baked cookies right out of grandma’s freestanding white gas oven. For that moment, a sense of love and happiness comes over them. This is how you begin to get in touch with all of your senses and for that moment you know exactly what I’m talking about. As a society, we have become much less interested in the sense of touch. Be it for health or lack of emotional connection, it’s just a fact that people don’t hug, kiss or touch
each other as much as we have in the past. Think of the last time someone you love just came up and gave you a hug or a kiss. What did that mean to you? Didn’t it make your day? Didn’t it make you feel alive? Didn’t it make you want to do it again? Remember that feeling and make it happen as much as you’d like it to happen to you. Lastly, I must mention the sense of taste. Remember when you had the most romantic meal and it’s the night you remember forever? So many senses go into that memory but the most important sense was taste. Part of what made that so special was the fact that what you tasted lingered and will for years. I bet that when you have a similar meal to that one, it will bring you right back to that special dinner and you will remember so much about that night. Senses play a huge role in our lives... I hope this just begins to make you start thinking about how important it is to embrace every sense and learn more about it, enjoy it and surround yourself with senses that lead to less stress, more happiness and a sense of being. Several factors can cause your body to change over time — pregnancy, aging, heredity — resulting in disproportionate contours of localized fat deposits. If your problem areas don’t respond to diet and exercise, liposuction or a tummy tuck could be the answer. Removing excess fat and skin and restoring weakened muscles gives you a smoother, firmer profile. For more information, visit our website or call for a consultation.

senior perspective Words and Wisdom
Sr. Sex OR Sexy Seniors! by FRANCESCA
OMG
! They’re still doing it? Yep! In between Bingo and gardening, from Florida to Arizona anywhere that seniors reside during their twilight years, sex is still sexy. From the boardroom to the bedroom, under the stars, on a hot steamy beach or in a rocking chair! Don’t let them fool you! Afternoon naps take on new meaning! Those ‘condo cowboys’ are back in the saddle again and cougars have been let out of their cages! “I always say that there is no such thing as a ‘sexpiration’ date,” says Dr. Laura Berman, LCSW, PhD, author, world-renowned sex and relationship expert, host of ‘In The Bedroom’ on the Oprah Network, and regular guest on Dr. Oz. “People can and do enjoy sexual pleasure well into their golden years and beyond. Sexual health and physical health go hand-in-hand, and as long as you live a healthy lifestyle and practice good self-care, there is no reason why you have to quit enjoying sex as you age. Just make sure to listen to your body and don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns you might have.” Let’s face it! Body parts aren’t in the exact place as they were. A jiggle here, a wrinkle there: gravity can take its toll. Therefore adjustments are in order. What senior can forget ‘making out’ to Johnny Mathis or Frank Sinatra on the family sofa hoping that mom or dad didn’t come running down the steps? Well, time is reversed. Seniors spend the first half of their lives hiding from parents, and the second half hiding from adult kids and grandkids! Who can even stay up until midnight for a tête-à-tête? And with degenerative ailments, who can even slide into positions of the Kama Sutra? Don’t despair! Good old-fashioned ‘making out’ minus pregnancy worries are a winning combo. Yet somewhere during dinner, between the oysters that slide ever so sensuously down your throat, and the lobster and Cherries Jubilee, seniors still need to have ‘the talk’. According to the AARP website, “Aging baby-boomers are once again busting stereotypes, setting records and breaking rules.” Data from the CDC shows that STD’s have increased among those 55 and older; Medicare is considering providing coverage for STD screenings for seniors, plus behavior counseling. Oh, no! Who would have thought that beloved grannies and grandpas are so contagious? Why the increase? Aging immune systems, medications, and low condom use plus low-potency. (Although watching the Stones, Aerosmith and other original rock bands strutting across the stage might debunk the myth!)
“There are many established therapies for erectile dysfunction (E.D.) which make it possible for seniors to enjoy sexual activity well into their eighties and beyond, if they wish,” explains Robert D. Mino, M.D., F.A.C.S., Urologist and Urological Surgeon at Doylestown Hospital and Abington Memorial Hospital, both in Southeastern PA. “Among the currently available oral medications are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, which are in a class known as Type 5 Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors (PDE5I’s).” But, our beloved seniors would still rather ‘make love, not war’! They’re not going down without a fight! “Other methods (for achieving and maintaining erections) include Pharmacologic Injection Therapy, Vacuum Erection Device Therapy and Penile Implant Surgery,” continues Dr. Mino, M.C., F.A.C.S. “It’s a matter of education. Seniors are often embarrassed to discuss their sexual dysfunction but once they open up about it, their options are many. I prefer to start with the least invasive approaches and gradually expand the options in keeping with the patient’s wishes.” Seniors: Make sure you know your partner’s sexual history! Don’t let the shiny white dentures, leopard print cane and Gatsby-style dress fool you. “Outside of a monogamous relationship, seniors run the same risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases as do teens and college age kids,” adds Dr. Mino. “An educational campaign directed at seniors is needed as they often find themselves alone after a lifelong monogamous relationship and quite frankly, sexually transmitted disease may not even be on their radars. But the risk is very real and it should be emphasized that with risky behavior comes the risk of acquiring an STD. Perhaps a slogan like, STD’s... they’re not just for kids anymore... is needed to drive home the message.” So, sneak a condom into your vintage beaded purse or pocket and reignite that passion for passion. Love is lovelier the second, or third time around! Remember – Sei bellisima (or bellisimo)! Francesca, noted author and artist, is a self-proclaimed purveyor of relationships and love. After roaming the world, she resides in Pennsylvania. June 2014 Local Living

Tax Efficient Investing
By Blair Johnson
The Open Letter. Greetings! I trust we are all finally enjoying the mild wonderful embrace of spring. It is a time of new beginnings, renewing your New Years’ resolutions; do you remember what yours was? Take a second!
Ok,
if you have been reading my column you know about the joys of parenthood that I often write about. Whether you have the perfect storybook family or raising your children as a single parent, you always wonder, am I doing the right things? What does the future hold? Well, as my present to you, I have an open letter from a young daughter, address to the parents in us all. Let’s call her “A”. This anonymous young lady has some words of wisdom for us. Let’s look into the mind of a daughter grown to young adulthood. Dear Mom/Dad Do you ever stop to think about what your child(ren) actually want from you as a parent? I’m now a young parent myself and I want to make sure I do things a little differently. What do you think your child values most? Their phones, clothing, or maybe friends and weekend plans? Today parents focus so much on planning and saving, like for a trip to Disney World; or maybe gifts for the holidays. We want to give our children the best education, the fastest smart phones, the newest clothes and we hope it will make them happy. We put so much emphasis on materialism, the best of the best that we forget what the real meaning of family is. Children value our time and attention. Having family dinners as much as possible, engaging in conversation (not via
text), that’s what matters to a child. In fact it’s imperative to their social and communicating skills. Start thinking quality over quantity - particularly spending quality time together. Take a day to put down the phones, not worry about saving for that Disney Trip and just listen. Spending a few hours, even just one day, that will make more of a difference in the long term. Disney trips come and go, cell phones and gadgets are old and archaic in no time at all. Even if the kids appear to not care about you keep caring keep the door open, show the example of unconditional love you already have and want them to have. Time, love, togetherness. Think about that. This letter could be from your daughter or son from a future time. Love, A. Wow, could not have said it better myself. Take care, have a wonderful summer! The Beauty of a Stay Vacation By Mary Cushing Doherty, Esquire High Swartz LLP | mcdoherty@highswartz.com
R
emember after 2008, when the “Stay Vacation” got a lot of press? This is the trend to stay local or at home for vacation instead of going out of town. After the tough economic downturn, loss of savings and surprise layoffs, families needed to rethink how they would vacation with their children despite lousy economic times. Another family circumstance that can lead to financial stress is marital problems triggering separation, and the strain of supporting two households. Despite the financial strains, some separated mothers or fathers want to indulge their children to take away the sting of the separation by going away on a vacation. Such indulgence may be impractical or misleading to the children. Just as an economic downturn means the family has to rethink its priorities, the strain of a divorce may require more focus on conserving finances and less on spending dollars to ease the pain.

A stay vacation can be a wonderful thing! Why not create the opportunity to make lemonade out of an otherwise sour situation? When planning a Stay Vacation, parents can explore with their children everything the local area has to offer. The children can learn about budgeting and conducting cost-benefit analysis while learning about local adventures. If one of the children likes baseball, why not plan day trips to visit AA and AAA ball parks? If the child likes science and nature, do the research and explore a nearby park, museum or the campus of a local college where there are science or outdoor projects. For those children who like to do arts and crafts, there are often many free to lowcost events and activities. The Stay Vacation could easily become child-centered and focused on embracing the joys that are close at hand. In a divorce situation, as custody arrangements develop, it is not unusual for a parent, who has partial custody for a few days every two weeks during the school year, will have a block of time with a children in the summer. This may mean that some of that “vacation time” is also working time for mom or dad. Evenings after work can become an extension of the Stay Vacation. Is there a local star-gazing club? Do you want to experiment with outdoor cooking on summer evenings? Many communities offer outdoor family movies; bring a blanket and relax. After separation, many parents treasure time with the children and develops a closer relationship. If the separated parents decide to discuss the child(ren) and summer plans with each other, they could coordinate vacation adventures and show a level of cooperation that the children may not have seen before the separation and divorce. For happily married parents, they too can re-think vacation plans. All parents should consider a family discussion to explore the benefits of the local community and the Stay Vacation. In recent years, she has received recognition from her peers and the community, including the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Lynette Norton Award in 2012 and one of the 2012 Women of the Year by the Legal Intelligencer. She was one of the Women of Distinction chosen by the Philadelphia Business Journal and received the Margaret Richardson Award from the Montgomery Bar Association.
