Welcome to Rinklefree Living, the official magazine of Rinklefree Aesthetic Centers, a new concept in the fields of plastic surgery and dermatology. As this is our first issue, I would like to explain the reasons behind the creation of the Centers and the magazine.

VOL. 1 - ISSUE 1 Publisher Blue Water Media LLC President Rinklefree Aesthetic Centers Dr. Robert J. Skalicky Art Director Sherilyn Kulesh / Kulesh Design Group Director of Sales Blair Johnson

The field of plastic surgery has continued to explode with new procedures, new devices, and new concepts, all geared at creating the “ideal” body image for each patient. As a board certified plastic surgeon that has been in practice over 25 years, I’ve noticed that the field of aesthetic and plastic surgery has fallen short in providing patients with one of the most necessary ingredients in the plastic surgery recipe, namely, education. The media is flooded with countless advertisements for countless numbers of procedures and devices, all of which claim to be the “fountain of youth” needed to restore youthful appearance. The truth of the matter is that it becomes very deceptive whether a particular procedure really lives up to its claim or whether or not a particular procedure is indicated in each patients’ treatment goals.

Holding Back the Hands of Time By Jillian Dunn

I

am of the age that I have considered how to possibly turn back, well at least aggressively fight against the dreaded passing of time or dare we say “getting older”. At 49 years old with a healthy routine of working out 2-3 times a week, being generally conscious of what I eat, drink and how many hours I sleep. The question what else can I do to make myself look on the outside as young as I feel inside pops up occasionally and more frequently as I approach 50. I have girlfriends who have started to consider alternative methods in the battle against time and have had small plastic surgery treatments over the last few years. One close friend mentioned that I might want to schedule a consultation with an amazing plastic surgeon she used for her “refreshing” named Dr. Robert J. Skalicky his practice was located in the Bucks County area and she was absolutely thrilled with her results. Being the ever analytical woman I asked a few deeper questions rather than just gazing at her beautiful face and saying I am a believer. I asked her what was different about Dr. Skalicky and she immediately answered he not only prepared her physically for her surgery but mentally by educating her on what to expect before and after the surgery in order to “manage her expectations”. He asked her why she want the procedure, what did she hope to achieve by having it done and scheduled multiple consultations in order to make sure she was truly educated on what was happening. I was intrigued by the idea of being able to make an informed decision with the assistance of a medical expert with 26 years in Plastic Surgery as to what I can and should do in regards to plastic surgery at my age. I did some research on my own as well and found rave reviews for Dr. Skalicky and his practice and 80% of his clients are referrals. Dr. Skalicky’s practice has rave cli6 • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

ent reviews of being different than most clinics as they strive to treat the whole body and the patient’s mental and physical well- being before and after their procedure. I also discovered that in order to be a plastic surgeon you need to complete 4 years of your residency and 4 years in the study of plastic surgery. Dr. Skalicky’s medical school training was completed at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a General Surgery residency in the Philadelphia area. He also did a Plastic Surgery fellowship at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Skalicky has received numerous awards throughout his career including several “Best of Bucks” honors and performed the first live internet broadcast of a breast reconstruction surgery viewed by over 500,000 people. Most recently he completed an MBA degree at Drexel University and graduated summa cum laude and is presently training residents and fellows in the areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery. I concluded based on his background and his patient’s rave reviews of their results and quality of care before and after their procedures, Dr. Skalicky would be a great first step in exploring what options I had in considering a plastic surgery procedure. So the question that was popping up more frequently at 49 nudged me to call his office and schedule a consultation. I was secretly hoping that he was so busy that I could wait a few weeks but delighted and a little anxious that he could see me the following week. The receptionist was polite, courteous and professional. She suggested I wear clothing and garments that made the disrobing practical and comfortable for me during the consultation. She mentioned that I write down any questions I have for Dr. Skalicky, research my potential procedure before my appointment as well as

have my medical history information ready. The history should include any medical problems that run in my immediate family. When scheduling my appointment I was pleasantly surprised that I had a choice of locations. I was aware of the Bucks County Plastic Surgery Center PC located in Newtown Square, PA and prepared to make the hour drive, but learned Dr. Skalicky also had an office in Buckingham and one to soon open in King of Prussia which is not far from where I live. I arrived at my appointment with all of the information that the receptionist requested and a stomach full of nerves and a head full of questions. I actually felt conflicted and confused at what I considering doing based on my family medical history which might not make me an ideal candidate for any elective medical procedure. I was made to feel welcome in the Clinic which was professional, attractive and comfortable but not over the top, similar to a general physician’s office but every so more relaxing and a tad more luxurious. After only waiting a few moments after my scheduled appointment time I was escorted into Dr. Skalicky’s office and was greeted by a well groomed, professional man in his fifties with a firm hand shake, easy smile and affable demeanor. I immediately felt at ease and happy that I heeded my friend’s suggestion of scheduling a consultation. Not considering myself to be the average plastic surgeon candidate, or so I thought as I am not looking for “Kardashian” results. Dr. Skalicky assured me the majority of his patients were just like me in being curious about how to look and feel the best we can as we age. He asked what procedure I was considering and what were my “expectations” as he prides himself of managing his patients’ expectations. I was honest and said I was not sure, but liked the idea of total body wellness so that I could look refreshed and as young as I felt in my heart. Dr. Skalicky showed a genuine desire to make sure I knew my options in plastic surgery for the result I wanted and we discussed what procedures would reasonably obtain the best results for my particular needs and expectations. He said he wanted me to view him as a friend as well as surgeon and liked to break down barriers that exist in many physician/patient relation-

ships. Dr. Skalicky stated he prides himself on treating his patients like family members. He truly wanted to get to know me as a whole person, not just a particular body part he was working on. We discussed several small procedures to fight lines on the face, neck, hands and ways of tightening your stomach, reducing cellulite in the normal areas everyone dislikes as they age. Ever the inquisitor I asked why he decided to be a plastic surgeon and he said at first he was going to be a pediatrician but quickly decided in his residency he loved the “artistry” of plastic surgery and the ability to assist a patient in feeling more beautiful. Dr. Skalicky started to “create clarity” out of my confused mind as to what I was feeling and why I might be having conflicted feeling about getting a procedure. He reviewed my family’s medical history and advised if I wanted to consider any type of plastic surgery he would like to schedule a few consultations so that we can discuss my risk vs benefits from any procedure. I left my consultation and felt excited to have met a plastic surgeon that was able to anticipate my fears, educate me as to what I could expect from the procedures we discussed and truly wanted to make sure he was able to “manage my expectations”. Needless to say I am eagerly waiting to schedule an appointment when the new office in King of Prussia which will be only 20 minutes from where I live, opens in the near future. The receptionist also mentioned hat he was changing the name of his practices to Rinkle Free Aesthetic Centers. The King of Prussia office would be introducing Rinklfree which is Dr. Skalicky’s new concept in plastic surgery and dermatology that prioritizes patient education along with personalized patient care and expert clinical treatment options. It has been created to help patients understand all treatment options and intended results of procedures in a friendly, caring atmosphere based on honesty and trust. This new concept Dr. Skalicky was introducing excited me even more about the next time I would have a consultation with him. I truly believed I had found in Dr. Skalicky an expert and innovator in his field of plastic surgery, who would be a great addition to my list of what I might need to assist me in “holding back the hands of time”. • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

Shaping the Future New style cohesive gel implants give women the long term look and feel they desire

B

reast enhancement procedures remain in the top 3 cosmetic surgery procedures performed annually. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 300,000 procedures were performed in the US in 2013. But while breast enhancement procedures continue to steadily increase, the desired look of the breast is changing somewhat among many women. Now, rather than desiring the “overdone”, “overfilled” look of the breast, many women are requesting more natural, “softer” appearing breast contours. In many cases, breast “enlargement” procedures are more aptly termed breast “replacement” procedures where women are merely requesting replenishment of

capsule contracture, a condition where implants can become firmer over the years. Dr. Skalicky explains that the clinical studies performed have shown that there is a 61% lower capsule contracture rate using the new shaped breast implants when compared to the standard round gel implants.

breast tissue lost through pregnancy, weight loss, or the aging process. In order to answer this desire, implant companies have redesigned their cohesive gel implants with more anatomical lines and contours. According to Dr. Robert Skalicky, Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and President of Rinklefree Aesthetic Centers in, “The new shaped breast implants mirror a woman’s natural breast contour resulting in a more natural, “tapered” slope to the breast.” In addition to giving a more natural slope to the breast, the new implants are filled with a highly cohesive gel that resists the rippling that is sometimes seen with other implant types. “Implant wrinkling in primary breast augmentation patients has been shown to be less than 1% over a 7 year study performed by the implant companies,” states Dr. Skalicky. In addition to the aesthetic advantages for patients, the new implants also have been shown to be extremely safe. The highly cohesive nature of the gel prevents any problems with gel migration should the implant ever get damaged. The gel actually “sticks” together and does not leave the shell of the implant. Other advantages of using the new shaped implants include a reduction in

Aside from the implant studies, however, the true question remains. How happy are women with the results of the new shaped breast implants? Surveys taken from women with the new style implants have shown a 96% satisfaction rate with the shape, feel, and overall look of the breast. According to Dr. Skalicky, “The new shaped implants add one more tool for the plastic surgeon to have in his toolbox to treat women that truly want a softer look to their breast and fear the overly full look of the other implant types. While a shaped implant may not be for every woman seeking breast enlargement, it truly offers an alternative for the woman that wants the most natural look and feel of the breast or wants to simply replace volume that has been lost.” So how do you know if these new implants are right for you? Well, like all cosmetic procedures, the first step is to obtain a consultation with a plastic surgeon skilled in the new implant type and learn about the advantages and differences between a shaped implant and the standard round gel implant. This process often includes discussions of breast and body contour, existing anatomy, and reviews of pictures of patients that have had breast augmentation with contoured implants. “Every cosmetic surgery decision by a patient should start with education” explains Dr. Skalicky. I actually encourage my patients to have multiple consultations with me before proceeding with their breast surgery. This process not only allows me to fine tune their expectations and desires, but also allows me to make sure they fully understand the procedure, alternative treatments, and long term expected outcomes.” While cosmetic procedure options may seem limitless these days, competent, honest caring plastic surgeons may be in shorter supply. Find a surgeon you can trust to educate and guide you and your future may just “shape up” right before your eyes! • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

that. Just as women try and convince men that “it’s just a game” and it’s no big deal, they need to adhere to their own logic. It is just a game, so don’t make it a big deal and let him watch it.

5 Ways for “Football Widows” to Handle Football Season By Kelly Jackson

W

ell, it’s that time of year again. Men have hunkered down into their man caves in preparation for the upcoming football season. While it is a glorious time for men, conversely, if you listen closely, you can hear voices of disgust and exasperation all across the country from girlfriends, fiancée’s and wives that detest that first weekend in September. Yes, there’s more than a fair share of women that love the sport just as men do, but most women hate losing the attention of their man for 5 months. Here are a few suggestions to help the ladies cope with the upcoming months of the pro and college football seasons. These 5 things ought to help ease some of the tension caused by the sport. Here’s to a great (and peaceful) football season!

1. Let him watch the game – Women can’t say on one hand that they want to keep their man happy while trying to deny him something that does just

learning and adapting to new things than men, so it stands to reason that learning to embrace football may be in their best interest. When you spend time competing with men’s passion for the sport, the big picture goes unnoticed: Spending time together. I’ve yet to meet a woman that didn’t come to love football once they were able to follow it. (Although don’t use it as an excuse to crash boy’s night!)

3. Don’t use sex as a distraction – This oldest and most pointless trick in the book always causes more problems than it solves. Don’t put on the lingerie in an effort to make the man “choose” what’s more important. If it’s a big enough game, he’ll choose that. Why? Because this moment in this game is only going to happen once! Even if a woman is upset and withholds sex, eventually she’ll come around again and a wise man already knows this. 4. Bond with your friends – Some women will never be able to sit down and actually care about football, now is a good time to catch up with friends you may have lost touch with during the busy summer months. Get together for pedicures, have dinner, go shopping… be some sort of support for one another instead of moping around the house. 5. Catch up on reality TV/your own programs – Instead of feeling neglected, women

can catch up on things they like to watch but our men could care less about. Whatever God awful reality TV programming is on is more than capable of keeping women busy for hours, while a man indulges in the glory of football. Happy Football Season!

Boots:

Fall’s Sexiest Bounty By Georgina Young-Ellis

W

ith the arrival of fall comes the return of one of the sexiest items in a woman’s wardrobe: her boots. (Counter-intuitive, perhaps, because they cover more than they expose!) Many of us have more than one pair, some variety of black, brown, suede, cowboy, high heeled, casual, rain, snow, chunky, or sleek. They might zip up the side, lace up the front or have to be pulled on like a riding boot. Men’s eyes seem to be drawn to a woman’s legs in the right pair of boots, but why is that? Wikipedia says boots have appeal because they hint at “the interaction of male ‘strength,’ female ‘compassion’ and a dash of sexuality.” I’m not sure where the compassion comes in; instead, I’d argue that boots give a woman an air of defiance, and that’s sexy, more than just a dash. Often paired with patterned tights, lace stockings, or even over a bare leg, the popularity of fashion boots hearkens back to Victorian times. In those days boots were tightly laced, like a corset, and hid the forbidden glimpse of a foot while still showing off the curve of the ankle. The Victorians had it right: if you cover up, with just the right degree of reveal, it forces the admirer to imagine what’s underneath, or even what’s at the north end of those boot-clad legs. But boots didn’t really take off in fashion until the 1960s, when girls in micro-minis and vinyl go-go boots, dancing energetically in cages, helped launch the sexual revolution. Boots have become the symbol of the dominatrix—the companion of the whip, the black leather bustier, and a pair of handcuffs. But the average woman slipping into her fall boots for the first time in the season is probably not thinking about them in such extremes. She’s simply noticing how they make her skirt seem a little flirtier, or her legs look longer as they fit snuggly over the calves of her skinny jeans. And though many women go with a highheeled version for optimum hotness, I think there’s something appealingly demure about a flat-heeled boot, or even a cute rainboot, with a short-ish skirt. How about a feminine, lacey dress with combat boots? Or, in the privacy of your boudoir, nothing but thigh-highs? No matter how you wear them, give your boots a little extra credit this autumn. They are, by nature, sexier than you think. Georgina Young-Ellis lives in Queens, New York with her artist husband and musician son. She is the author of The Time Mistress Series, a romantic time-travel series spiced with adventure. Titles include The Time Baroness, set in Jane Austen’s England; The Time Heiress, staged in pre-Civil War New York City; and The Time Contessa, a journey to Renaissance Italy. • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

Bring Sexy Back.. Finding the Perfect Bra By Stephanie Nolasco

I

f you’re wearing a bra this very second, chances are it’s riding up your back, the underwire is poking your rib cage, or the straps are digging into your shoulders, making it feel as if you’re wearing a Victorian contraption instead of a sexy undergarment. It turns out that you, along with thousands of women, are wearing the wrong bra size. Here are some tips on how any woman can find the perfect bra and boost their self-confidence.

in the States. Besides who wouldn’t mind wearing silky-smooth lingerie from France or London? But if you think a standard bra from a cheaper retailer means saving money, think again. An average American bra made with weak cotton will last up to six months. A European bra can survive for an entire year. The fabric is what supports your breasts, so a cheaper bra looses its elasticity quickly and it’ll need to be thrown away sooner.

1. Finding the Right Size

Lingerie isn’t only about providing support, it’s also about looking and feeling like the vixen you are. Retro-inspired looks have been popular for a long time and make you look like a glamorous pinup girl, with little effort. Some lingerie designers are even replicating the sensuous patterns of golden-era Hollywood and applying them to modern styles. Bullet bras are becoming a hit again. It’s sexy without it being only for the bedroom. Thanks to Spanx, girdles are coming back and are better than ever.

Go to a reputable lingerie store. They’ll be able to size you correctly and provide a variety of options that look good on you. Major department stores and local lingerie shops will spend more time showing you how a proper cup can benefit your breasts, not just sell you a product.

2. Major No-Nos Many women assume that tightening up your straps is supposed to make your bra fit better. However, the support of your bra should be coming from the band. The bra should be able to hold your breasts properly without the straps on your shoulders. In addition, a strap shouldn’t be able to be pulled back or fit too snug. The right cup should also cover the entire breast, without causing un expected spilling.

3. Invest in Europe The difference between a Parisian bra and one from Walmart isn’t only price and location. European bra companies are known for using the finest fabrics and offering a larger array of sizes than those found

4. Scope Current Trends

5. Go Shopping! The Internet has thousands of retailers from around the world that provide a large collection of sizes. Once you do find a manufacturer that sells lingerie that compliments your body type, wait until they have sales and stock up. After you purchase your new undergarments, make sure you properly take care of them by hand washing or putting your lingerie in a mesh bag before they go into the washing machine. When bras last longer, you can spend your cash on other must-haves like jewelry or shoes.

How a Dream in Your Heart Becomes the Love of Your Life A Modern Woman’s Success Story

C

By Sharyl Volpe

an you pinpoint the moment you knew your destiny? Lisa Cifrese can, and she was four-years-old when it happened.

“I knew I was going to have a future with horses,” says the co-owner of Thornewood Farm in Stockton, New Jersey. Lisa and her husband, author and psychoanalyst, Dr. Richard Geha, own the largest and most successful stable of straight Egyptian Arabian horses in the North Eastern United States. Also the founder of a successful practice as a psychotherapist, Lisa spoke with a sparkle as she reflected, “I don’t know how I knew, I just did!” A licensed clinical social worker and current surrogate “mother” of 21 of the most rare Egyptian Arabian horses in the world, Lisa elaborated, “Both of my parents rode but did not carry it into their later lives. My love for horses is just a natural part of who I am.” Appreciating their daughter’s unusually profound devotion, Lisa’s mom and dad presented her with her first mare, a Morgan, when she was just ten-years-old. “I remember clearly my father saying sternly, ‘Your mother will never feed your horse. Never!’ So, I knew this animal would rely solely on me. And I loved it.” Did this prove inconvenient considering the allimportant social life of a pre-teen? Not at all. “Most of my friends had horses too, and similar schedules. Which was great for my parents, actually, because I didn’t need a curfew. I was never home too late and was always up early.” As a rule, Lisa explained, horses become accustomed to a schedule, which is best kept consistent. Influenced, as many of us were, by the book and TV series by British veterinarian, Alf Wight (aka James Herriot of All Things Great and Small fame), Lisa initially envisioned herself as a large animal vet.

However, it was psychology that would claim her academic focus in the end; she went on to earn an MSW from Rutgers University School of Social Work. A subsequent position in the 1980s earned Lisa a role in a pioneering program treating anorexia nervosa and bulimia. She would be on the ground floor at one of only three clinics in the country treating eating disorders as conditions distinct from symptoms of schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder. And so the die was cast. Lisa was placed squarely on the path to establishing a practice that would treat hundreds of patients, mostly women and girls, for eating disorders and other emotional and behavioral health issues. She served as a charter member and president for seven years of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association. She has frequently appeared as a guest on radio and TV as an expert on eating disorders, and has often been quoted in newspapers and various media. In the meantime… Enter Thornewood Farm! If you have ever taken a drive along rolling, country hills on narrow, curvy roads then you may have passed an estate or two. Perhaps there was also a stable, styled with an opulence rivaling the home itself. This describes Thornewood Farm, where Lisa and Richard live. “We are here for the person who has always dreamed of owning a horse but knows nothing about how to accomplish it,” Lisa says, sitting comfortably in her living room with Richard, on a plush, chestnutcolored leather loveseat. The colossal, twenty-foothigh bookshelf behind her extends in both directions around the room, brimming with beckoning books. Sunlight floods in through enormous French-paned windows. • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

“I knew when I finished grad school, I had to do something big with horses. With a boatload of student loans, I needed a good return on investment.” Sure, she’d always loved a pretty thoroughbred or two, but who hasn’t? She began a personal journey of intensive education on breeds vs. outlay of capital. This was to eventually include all aspects of breeding, and Lisa became an expert in achieving the highest level of beauty and performance through the analysis of the family trees of these horses. “There is so much to know about horses,” Lisa remarks about the study of lineage. “I never stop learning new things. I enjoy studying the history and characteristics of each line, and seeing where certain traits originate, which are the best, and how to preserve and develop the best.” She discovered that straight Egyptian Arabian horses had the best ROI because of their rarity and extreme beauty. Even in a down market economy, the breed retained its value. A chance meeting led Lisa to the famous annual Kentucky horse show called the Egyptian Event, sponsored by the Pyramid Society, an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of these desert bred horses. (Lisa was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.) The breed traces back as far as recorded history. Lisa and Richard gradually focused more attention on promoting their equine interests. Settled on forty beautiful acres in Stockton, NJ, their farm specializes in the breeding and preservation of the lineage of straight Egyptian Arabian horses. The couple is also dedicated to bringing these magnificent creatures together with people through enlightening social engagements, raising awareness of this rare and splendid breed through educational seminars and special events. Each year Richard and Lisa host a number of extravagant open houses, inviting guests into this beautiful world and providing attractive and lucrative profit potential. 24 • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

When you visit Thornewood, you can meet all of the “children,” each either nestled in her spotless, impeccable stall, or outside prancing as only these showoffs can. “We currently have twenty-one horses, five of them owned by others. One of the mares has four mothers, each owning a percentage. And do they spoil that horse!” Lisa shared some secrets about their temperaments and how she and they communicate. “There is a sentience… very much so. These fabulous creatures are spirited and very intelligent. They are sensitive to everything around them. It is very much about touch, and the eyes. You can see they are watching you while you are loving them. When I am with them, I’m at peace.” And so, the final piece of the story. The horses are therapy for the therapist. And Lisa and Richard want to share that experience with everybody. You can plan to enter this majestic world at the next Thornewood Farm invitational gathering on May 3rd, 2014. Spend your day interacting with these lovely creatures while having fun getting to know new people in a unique setting, with good food and drink. Speakers include engaging experts from around the country, sharing information about growing a horse business and how to make it profitable too. Join the experience, and see for yourself how the elegance and beauty of these horses can transform your life. Going Back to School as a Mom: 10 Tips That Can Help You Succeed By Lori Johnston

C

ollege can be a terrifying concept for moms trying to balance a marriage, kids, work, and day-to-day activities. But with more and more mothers taking advantage of online learning to hit the books when the kids are asleep, it is a new reality. Here are 10 tips that can help Mom manage a busy work, family, and school schedule and bring home a report card their kids will be proud of. 1. I love breakfast in bed, but a college degree is the best present. Share with your family that letting you pursue a

28 • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

college degree is a great way they can show their love for you. If you share how vital they are to your quest for a degree, they will realize they have a stake in the process -- and maybe they’ll offer to do the dishes while you’re doing homework. 2. Hiding from kids to finish 30-page paper due tomorrow! Illnesses, babysitter cancellations, and other unscheduled events can cut into your time to complete assignments. Reassure your kids that you love them, but you need to focus on school at certain points during the day. Being the best student possible can be one of your best moves as a mom.

3. Family time over, now onto schoolwork. School shouldn’t make you miss important events in your family’s life. Attend the birthday parties, sporting events, school concerts, and enjoy those summer and spring break vacations. But carve out time to keep on top of your studies (or to catch up as needed) well in advance of an important assignment or test. Many moms find that the wee hours of the morn’, during baby’s nap time, or when the laundry is soaking and dinner is in the slow cooker is the ideal (and only!) study time. Thanks to online learning, moms are logging on and learning when and where it works for them. 4. Hanging out w/other student moms! Realize that you are not alone. Some schools offer organized students groups for moms and other adult learners, or you can start one up yourself. The friendships and support you receive from these groups can be essential throughout college, especially when you feel as if you won’t survive another day, let alone another semester. 5. Meeting today w/ college counselor for help. Seek academic support/student advisers who can help you determine the best way to complete assignments and carve out time to study. Their job is to help you succeed! Just like you want your kids to come to you with challenges, these advisers are standing at the ready to assist! 6. Homework while parked, waiting to pick up my little one @school, then soccer. Even brief periods of time -- 15 minutes in the car line at school, or during your kids’ many after-school activities -- can be beneficial for reading your textbook or flipping through note cards for test preparation. The key to a successful scholastic stint as a mom is making the most of all your time.

7. Big test tomorrow ... hubby handling bath time. Whether it’s keeping the children occupied the day before a big assignment is due, or handling routine tasks like bath time, ask your spouse for support so you can complete a paper or finish a class project. Remind him that the teamwork will pay off when you start your new career and bring home the bigger bucks. 8. Join me for study session? Reach out to fellow students virtually, providing a way for you and your classmates to help each other better understand the course material and provide much-needed encouragement during stressful times. Take the initiative to set up a smaller study group online. You can create a Facebook group page where you and fellow students can post questions, provide words of support, and even vent. Or set up a smaller chat room with a couple of study buddies. Embrace the ability to connect via the Internet and see how it will enrich your college experience. 9. Must have coffee! #AllNighterFuel A good night’s sleep is rare for many moms, but try to get at least more than a couple of hours of sleep so that you’re alert and awake during a particularly heated online discussion or a big test. Caffeine may become your crutch, but plan to scale back once you get that diploma. 10. Excited about first A on exam! Go ahead and post that grade on the fridge along with your kids’ artwork and report cards. And don’t be afraid to share your accomplishments with friends and strangers on Facebook and Twitter. The virtual encouragement could give you a boost to keep on bringing home those As.

FIRE UP Your Fitness Routine By Nancy O’Brien

B

ring out your inner temptress and get in shape at the same time. We found the latest ways to spice up your gym routine, boost confidence, and keep you on your toes in the bedroom. Looking for a change in your usual toning classes? The newest fitness trends are ones that work your tricky spots while giving you a leg up (literally) with your sex life. See which class below fits your personality for a sleek, sculpted body. Pole Dancing If you always wanted to secretly whip around a pole you can now check it off your bucket list. A beginner pole dancing fitness class will teach you a simple choreographed routine broken up over a month. You’ll learn not only a routine, but some basic pole-fitness moves, such as different kind of spins, dismounts to the floor, and walking variations. The class gives you an upper-body workout and is great cardio because it’s continual movement. Not to mention, you’ll earn some extra brownie points at home with your new moves before getting busy. Zumba A hybrid class of salsa, merengue, and cumbia popped into the mainstream fitness scene and few years ago, but since then has quickly become one of the most effective and fun ways to lose weight for all ages and genders. Expect to get a full-body workout from top to bottom — every muscle is being worked. Switch up the usual dinner and drinks date night and rope your guy to this class instead.

Bikram Yoga Whatever your fitness goals, Bikram hot yoga helps you achieve them faster – by speeding up your natural body processes. Bikram hot yoga is based on a fundamental scientific principle: that heat accelerates chemical reactions. And since your body runs on biochemical reactions, speeding them up produces results faster. But that’s only part of the story. You also achieve results faster because Bikram hot yoga works more than just parts of your body. Unlike other exercise programs, its systematic sequence of postures and breathing exercises works every muscle, every joint, every tendon of your body – and your glands and nervous system as well. Warning newcomers, a certain level of flexibility is required to excel at these classes, but if you are one who has been exercising for some time, and want to spice up your regimen, this might just be for you!

Smart Ways to Eat Better By Peggy Aston

How many times do you start out the day, full of resolve to eat well? Then by the time you get to dinner, you think, “maybe tomorrow.” Here are some delicious recipes to help you get started without all of the fuss and muss.

Whole-Wheat Linguine with Shrimp, Asparagus and Tomato

This taste of spring combines shrimp and chopped asparagus sautéed with shallots, garlic, white wine and ripe tomatoes, tossed with whole-wheat linguine and grated fresh parmesan. Keep this springtime staple gluten-free by swapping in soba noodles or brown rice pasta. What You’ll Need 8 oz. whole-wheat linguine (or other long, skinny pasta) 12-15 large size peeled shrimp
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 shallot, minced
1 lb. asparagus, ends trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided
 1/2 cup dry white wine
1 cup vegetable stock
1 lemon, zested and juiced 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated, plus more for garnish 1 package of grape tomatoes cut in half What to Do Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add linguine and cook until al dente approximately 8-10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large sautée pan over medium heat. Add shallots and let them cook (without browning) until fragrant, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp, asparagus and garlic, and season with salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Cook until asparagus is tender, about 5 minutes. Pour in the wine and continue cooking until it’s almost fully reduced. Stir in the vegetable stock, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil and cook until the liquid is reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Add the linguine, tomatoes and parmesan cheese, and remaining black pepper, and toss well. Garnish with additional lemon zest and shaved parmesan and serve immediately.

SMART LIPO TRIPLEX BODY CONTOURING When dieting and exercise just aren’t enough! How many times are we plagued by areas of fullness or sagging skin in our bodies that just don’t respond to diet and exercise? Whether it is due to genetics, weight shifts, childbirth, or aging, most of us have at least one area of our body that we wish we could just make disappear with one sweep of a magic wand. Well now that magic has arrived and the magic act is called Smart Lipo Triplex. This new advance, performed by plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Shafran at The Rinklefree Center of Bucks County Plastic Surgery allows patients to reduce areas of unwanted fatty deposits, reduce cellulite, and shrink skin; a combination result absent in all other forms of contour treatments. According to Dr. Shafran, “The advantages of Smart Lipo Triplex is that it gives superior results over all other fat removal modalities, including hospital procedures, through a simple, minimally invasive procedure performed with local anesthesia in the office setting. The procedure works by directing a laser beam into the areas of unwanted fatty tissue and literally melting the fat cells resulting in contour corrections. The new design of the laser can also create new collagen growth and contract or shrink the surface skin at the same time.” Smart Lipo Triplex is comprised of three separate components that are used in body contouring. The first is the Smart Lipo component used to reduce areas of fullness on the abdomen, back, bra fat, arms, thighs, and chest (men). The second is Cellulaze, a component using a side-firing laser to treat areas of cellulite on the legs and thighs. And the third is Precision TX, the best treatment for neck fullness and loose skin. The beauty of this new treatment is that it is an office-based procedure performed under local anesthesia giving results as good or better than hospital based procedures but without the hospital and anesthesia costs. Dr. Shafran explains. “I see this procedure as the long awaited answer for fat reduction and skin tightening in the office. Many patients desire office based procedures but want results superior to the present array of noninvasive fat removal treatments done through heating or freezing of the fat. This technique, while still performed in an office, has 36 • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

definite results that patients can clearly see in the mirror. It seems to be the missing piece to the body contouring puzzle. In addition, patients benefit from the skin contraction that the laser affords that is completely absent from all other fat removal options.” The procedure is relatively simple to perform. The area of excess fat or loose skin is injected with a local anesthetic. Then a thin laser fiber is passed under the skin to literally melt and destroy the fat cells while contracting the skin. A short term compression garment is then worn to enhance the result. Along with contouring changes and skin contraction, perhaps one of the best uses for the Triplex laser is in cellulite reduction. Cellulite is caused by fibers attached to the undersurface of the skin causing dimpling and rippling present over time from skin slippage or weight gain. The sidefiring laser of the Cellulaze fiber actually melts the fibers that cause the dimpling in the skin. This in turn allows release of the skin so normal contours can return. This procedure is most commonly used on the front and back of the thighs where cellulite is most visible. “Until now, cellulite was basically untreatable. Now, with Cellulaze, women have an answer to smoothing out areas that are dimpled from cellulite,” says Dr. Shafran. Perhaps the most difficult part of the process of body contouring procedures is navigating through the vast array of devices on the market, with new ones appearing monthly, all claiming to be the best at what they do. With so many differing treatment options being advertised in the media for fat reduction, how does a patient know which procedure is right for them? Dr. Shafran sums up this problem in one word: education. He explains that body contouring procedures fall into 3 categories: non-invasive (Liposonix, Sculpsure, etc.), minimally invasive (Smart Lipo Triplex), and anesthesia/hospital based (full tumescent liposuction). The most important thing for a patient to decide is what level result they will be

happy with. Too often, patients select the easy, non-invasive technique but want the minimally invasive or invasive result. It is extremely important for a patient to understand the expected result of a procedure without being “overpromised” a result because the practitioner only has one device. “I’m happy that I can offer all options to a patient so I am unaffected by biases based on economic gain.” With the new Smart Lipo Triplex technology, maybe unwanted fat can finally be made to magically disappear and make beautiful body contours more than just an illusion! Dr. Shafran’s Rinklefree Centers are based in Newtown and Doylestown with other locations opening soon. Consultations can be made by calling the Center at 215-702-8600. He offers a wide array of services including facial, breast and body cosmetic procedures, as well as less invasive dermal injectable treatments. Procedures are performed daily including Saturdays. • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

Dysport is a prescription injection for temporary improvement in the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults less than 65 years of age. Important Safety Information What is the most important information you should know about Dysport? Spread of Toxin Effects: In some cases, the effects of Dysport and all botulinum toxin products may affect areas of the body away from the injection site. These effects can cause symptoms of a serious condition called botulism. Symptoms of botulism can happen hours to weeks after injection and may include swallowing and breathing problems, loss of strength and muscle weakness all over the body, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, or loss of bladder control. Swallowing and breathing problems can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. The risk of symptoms is probably greatest in children and adults treated for muscle spasms, particularly in those patients who have underlying medical conditions that could make these symptoms more likely. The toxic effects have been reported at doses similar to those used to treat muscle spasms in the neck. Lower doses, in both approved and unapproved uses, have also caused toxic effects. This includes treatment of children and adults for muscle spasms. These effects could make it unsafe for you to drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Do not have Dysport treatment if you: are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients (see the end of the Medication Guide for a list of ingredients), are allergic to cow’s milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Myobloc® or Botox®, or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. The dose of Dysport is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product. The dose of Dysport cannot be compared to the dose of any other botulinum toxin product you may have used. Dysport may not be right for you if: you have surgical changes to your face, very weak muscles in the treatment area, your face looks very different from side to side, the injection site is inflamed, you have droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds, deep facial scars, thick oily skin, or if your wrinkles can’t be smoothed by spreading them apart. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you have: a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome), allergies to any botulinum toxin product or had any side effect from any botulinum toxin product in the past, a breathing problem (such as asthma or emphysema), swallowing problems, bleeding problems, diabetes, or a slow heart beat or other problem with your heart rate or rhythm, plans to have surgery, had surgery on your face, weakness of your forehead muscles (such as trouble raising your eyebrows), drooping eyelids, or any other change in the way your face normally looks. Patients with a disease that affects muscles and nerves who are treated with typical doses of Dysport may have a higher risk of serious side effects, including severe swallowing and breathing problems. Human Albumin This product contains albumin taken from human plasma. Steps taken during donor screening and product manufacturing processes make the risk of spreading viral diseases extremely rare. In theory, there is also an extremely rare risk of contracting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). No cases of spread of viral diseases or CJD have ever been reported for albumin.

Allergic Reaction to Injecting in the Skin It is not known if an allergic reaction can be caused by injecting Dysport into the skin. The safety of treating excessive sweating with Dysport is not known. Common Side Effects The most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal and other natural products. JUST THE TIPS

GETTING YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW… BY LAUREN CRONMILLER Buying a new home can seem overwhelming but people do it everyday. I am currently in the market to buy a new home. I have been going through steps to get myself ready to purchase a home. Here are steps you can take to get yourself prepared too. CREDIT SCORES. In order to purchase a home, your credit score must be at least 580. To get a better rate on your mortgage, there are many factors. What type of loan are you getting? Conventional mortgages are asset and credit score driven. The higher the liquid assets and credit score, the lower the interest rate. FHA, VA, PFHA and USDA loans are not asset driven. The higher the credit score, the lower the rate. Other factors include the type of dwelling: Single family, 2-4 units, townhome or condominium, type of occupancy: primary residence, 2nd home or investment property, and your down payment: varies on the mortgage program. MONEY IN THE BANK. There are upfront fees like the home inspection and appraisal fee. A general home inspection depending on the size of the home will cost approximately $350, a termite $80, a radon $125, a mold test is $125 per sample; septic $300+ depending on what tests are elected, and a well test at $150+, again depending on the type of tests. An appraisal costs approximately $400. You will need money to put down. There are loan programs out there like USDA & VA that require little to no money out of pocket. Of course there are qualifications but I would highly recommend

looking into it. FHA requires a minimum of 3.5% down when purchasing a home; a conventional loan requires a minimum of 5% down. Lastly you will need money for closing costs. Closing costs vary depending on sale price and property taxes. If the out of pocket costs seem to be too high, ask for a seller assist to help cover some of the closing costs. NO-NO’S. During the process I highly recommend not doing any of the following. No credit inquiries. An underwriter will always ask for an explanation of inquiries. Do not open any credit cards, take out a loan, and make large purchases that require a loan or get placed on a credit card. When applying for a mortgage, the lender will look at your debt to income ratio. The more debt you have, the less of a house you will be able to afford and if your debt exceeds 41% depending on your loan, it may be very difficult to obtain a mortgage in the first place. Also, every mortgage lender will run a soft credit report, not an inquiry, on a buyer up to 48 hours before settlement. Any activity mentioned above may make a buyer unable to obtain a mortgage. Best advice, WAIT UNTIL AFTER SETTLEMENT! Run to the furniture store to furnish the home, buy that big screen TV at Best Buy, or put that new car in your new garage, but only after settlement has occured and you have the keys in hand. What is a seller assist? A percentage of the loan, it can range from 1%-6% depending on the type of loan, and the percentage is applied as a credit towards your closing costs. Stop Living with Knee, Hip and Joint Pain

Innovative Techniques, Personalized Care Algier says Dr. Pavlides “is not one to jump into surgery” as the only option. He first advises weight loss, exercise and other nonsurgical options to alleviate knee pain. Her praise for Dr. Pavlides includes not only her hospital care and comprehensive therapy, but also her scar. “I’m proud of my scar,” she says. “At therapy other patients noticed it and other doctors have asked about it.” Dr. Pavlides uses minimally invasive surgical techniques and closes the incision from the inside out. It’s a cosmetic approach, he explains. “I don’t use staples or close from the outside, so you don’t get that railroad track effect,” he says. “It takes more time, but I feel patients don’t need a big scar that’s a constant reminder of the surgery.” From her sisters’ experience, Algier also knew she would receive an extraordinary level of personal attention from Dr. Pavlides. “He spent time with me every day in the hospital and made sure I had everything I needed,” she says. “I’ve never had a better experience.”

arole Algier and her two sisters work together, baking and selling specialty cakes. Their days, she says, are just filled with joy. Their business, Full Spirited FlavoursTM, is a second career for each of them and something the closeknit trio believes was destined to be. But that’s not all these women do together. In the past two years, all three have had double knee replacements, Carole this past June. All had surgery at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, by the same orthopedic surgeon, Nikos Pavlides, MD, of Brandywine Institute of Orthopaedics. And they all stayed in the same room at PMMC’s Center for Orthopedics and Spine. “Dr. Pavlides is so tuned in to you as a patient, and his team at Pottstown is the same way,” says Algier, a Glenmoore resident. “Everyone is on the same page. You feel safe and secure in their hands and so well cared for.” Sister Sue was the first to have surgery, two years ago. Algier calls her “the scout” who researched and found the best doctor for “mature” knees pained by arthritis. Kathy had surgery a year ago. “We were there for one another through the surgeries, and that support was great,” Algier says. “But also, Dr. Pavlides has such a complete program at Pottstown. There’s no way you can’t recoup!”

FALL In Love With Vegetables... By Erika Ringwald

T

his is one of my favorite times of the year. I love when the air turns crisp, the leaves change colors, and the smell in the air is unmistakable. At this point in my life, fall means apple picking, pumpkin patches, and football. My menu also changes. This is when I think about comfort foods. Although these foods may be different to everyone, they will always fill you up and make you feel good. For me a weekend of socializing with family and friends, playing outside with my boys, and hearing football on the TV, is what makes me feel good. And the one food that ties all that together is chili! Chili is a hearty, one-pot dish that can cook on it’s own in the slow cooker or can be thrown together rather quickly. Most importantly, it always feeds a crowd! Chili is a very versatile food for my lifestyle during this season. I also love that it can be filled with vegetables that my kids might not otherwise jump at, and it’s nutrient dense without blowing the calories out of the water. If chili is a meat-and-kidney-bean-dish that does nothing more than cause you indigestion, give this one a try!

1 15-oz can black beans, drained and rinsed, 1/2 cup liquid reserved 2 15-oz cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 28-oz can diced tomatoes

Vegetarian Fall Chili

If you want to add a little more love to this dish, serve it over some barley or quinoa.

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 cups sweet potato, peeled and diced 2 cups chopped onions 1 2/3 cups coarsely chopped red bell peppers 2 cups chopped zucchini 6 garlic cloves, chopped 2 Tbsp chili powder 2 tsp dried oregano 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1-1 ½ tsp cocoa chili blend (I use McCormicks)

Heat oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add onions, bell peppers, zucchini and garlic; sauté until onions soften, about 10 minutes. Mix in chili powder, oregano, cumin, and cocoa chili blend; stir 2 minutes. Mix in beans, 1/2 cup reserved bean liquid, diced tomatoes and sweet potatoes. Bring chili to boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until flavors blend and chili thickens, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. This chili dish packs a nutritional punch. In this dish you are getting vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin B6, for starters. There is a boatload of fiber going on here as well as phytochemicals that have many different antioxidant properties. Even the spices offer nutrition, not just taste.

My favorite garnishes are a little sprinkle of sharp cheddar and a dollop of sour cream. Enjoy! Erika Ringwald is a Registered Dietitian with Erika Ringwald Nutrition. The Forty Year-Old Version Confessions Of a House Husband: Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In the Home By Kenny Spaulding

L

ike many in my age group, I was brought up with the male/female categorization of chores. Actually, if I recall correctly, all of the chores were dumped on the kids. We used to think it was the only reason that we were conceived. Decades ago, most families operated on a single income, with stay at home moms managing the homes. Men were not expected to help with the cooking, cleaning, and laundry as much, if at all. These days, both parents are working, which means we are all too beat to handle the home without some form of teamwork. I thought that I would share the somewhat unconventional division of household labor that my wife and I normally employ. First, let me clarify the title of this article. I do have an actual job, and my wife has her own home-based business. Her work is infinitely more physically taxing than mine, and my days are book ended with a nearly hour-long commute. I am the main cook in our home. I also do the weekly food shopping and the brunt of the laundry and cleaning. (Though my wife is quite a bit better at the cleaning. As most of us are aware, men do not clean under things, we clean around

them.) These duties have been traditionally regarded as “women’s work”, and my family and I laugh about it sometimes referring to dad as “The House Wife.” Aside from mowing the lawn, my wife performs nearly all of the outdoor work, which has traditionally been associated with the man of the house. Here’s the rub. We have this division of labor for a few reasons, but the main one is that these are the duties that we enjoy. After forty years on this earth, my credentials for masculinity have been firmly established. I simply like cooking, grocery shopping and doing laundry. My wife likes working outdoors. As for cleaning… neither one of us like that, but it still needs to get done. To divide labor in the home based on traditional ideas of what is masculine and feminine is beyond silly. My wife and I do not have the perfect marriage, but we do have a very strong one, built on the concepts of being best friends and equal members of a life-long team. Keeping up with the house is hard enough for full time workers without doing things you can’t stand doing. Why not make chores less of a chore by doing the things you enjoy rather than the things that tradition says you should do? Kenny is a freelance writer, lifelong professional musician, and has just completed his first full-length novel. He lives in a loving home in Bethlehem, PA with his amazing wife, incomparable son, and three love muffin doggies.

4. Avoid difficult people. You know who they are. If you take a minute to think about it, you can identify all the people in your life — bosses, coworkers, customers, friends, family, etc. — who make your life more difficult. 5. Unscheduled. Create more open periods of time in your life. It’s not necessary to schedule every minute of our lives. Learn to keep wide open blocks of time where we either work on our important tasks or batch process the smaller ones.

Rinklefree Your Life Editing your life, and changing certain habits, you can eliminate most (not all) sources of stress in your life. 1. Eliminate unnecessary commitments. We all have many commitments in our life, starting with work but also including commitments related to kids, our spouses, things to do at home, other family, civic, side work, religious, hobbies, online activities and more. Consider each of them, the amount of stress they provide, and the value you get out of them and take steps today to remove the ones that stress you out the most. 2. Disorganization. We’re all disorganized to some extent. Even if we’ve organized something, and created a great system for keeping it that way, things tend to move towards chaos over time. Take time to get things in your life organized, starting with your desk and move on to other areas. 3. Late. Being late always stresses us out. We have to rush to get ready, rush to get there, and stress out the whole time about looking bad and being late. Learn the habit of being early, and this stress disappears. Make a conscious effort to start getting ready earlier, and to leave earlier. 48 • RINKLEFREE LIVING •

6. Slow down. Instead of rushing through life, learn to take things slow. Enjoy your food, enjoy the people around you, enjoy nature. This step alone can save tons of stress. 7. Exercise. This is common advice for stress relief, and that’s because it works … but it’s also a stress prevention method. Exercising helps relieve the stress buildup, it gives you some quiet time to contemplate and relax, and just as importantly, it makes you more fit. 8. Eat healthy. This goes hand-in-hand with exercise as a stress prevention method, of course. Become healthier and a major source of stress will disappear. 9. Relax throughout the day. It’s important to take mini-breaks during your work day. Stop what you’re doing, massage your shoulders and neck and head and hands and arms, get up and stretch, walk around, drink some water. Go outside and appreciate the fresh air and the beautiful sky. 10. Be grateful. This might not be as obvious as some of the others, but developing an attitude of gratitude (I sound like a preacher with that rhyme!) is a way of thinking positive, eliminating negative thinking from your life, and thereby reducing stress. Learn to be grateful for what you have, for the people in your life, and see it as a gift. With this sort of outlook on life, stress will go down and happiness will go up. That’s a winning formula.
