I never fail to make my voice heard. And neither should you! Make use of what god has given you and say what you think, say what you believe in, and argue against what you don’t. Find your dream in life and pursue it Follow your heart and never give up. We all have the ability to do anything and fulfill any dream we want to; we just have to go and do it! When you find your passion in life, it creates meaning and gives you a purpose in the world. Taking the risk to pursue your dreams will generate happiness and lead to success. Live up to your morals and values - always remain aware of them Sticking to your morals and values in life will always keep you inspired, motivated, and energized to do something significant in the world. As children, we were educated to understand what our values are. As we grow older, I believe we seem to lose or forget about those crucial qualities. Summer Dating Tips The key to a successful summer romance is to keep things sexy, not sweaty — so if you’re looking to keep your cool during the hottest months of the year, here are 6 ideas to help get you started. 1. Plot your course for a road trip together. Once the temperature rises, it’s the perfect time for a road trip. There’s something sexy about setting out on a drive. (Provided it’s air-conditioned of course!) Plan a car-based itinerary for just the two of you. It will be time spent getting to know each other better, as you cruise through your own private world featuring great scenery while a custom-made romantic playlist provides the soundtrack. 2. Enjoy a picnic à deux in a cool, shaded spot. Why bother with a standard dinner date when you can plan a romantic picnic for two under the shade somewhere scenic instead? It’s easy to do if you already have a favorite lake or mountain spot in mind, but if not, how about laying a blanket down under a tree in a local park? If there’s an outdoor music venue where you can enjoy a picnic à deux accompanied by your favorite romantic songs in the early evening, even better.

5. Style yourself for hot-weather dates with a seasonally appropriate makeover.
Global warming is bad for the ecosphere, awful for the world…and its effects can be terrible for your love life. But don’t let it get you steamed! Try focusing your energy on a few simple summer-friendly makeover tips that can make all the difference in how you look and feel when you’re with your date. 6. Travel to a sizzling summer getaway destination. Add some novelty to your love life by visiting romantic destinations that will remind you what this time of year’s all about: feeling fresh, alive, healthy and ready for adventurous travel. While you consider where to go and what to do this summer, look for the most couples-friendly and seasonally spectacular date spots within a few of hours of home.

3. Visit climate-controlled museums and art galleries. When the heat is oppressive, smart people usually head inside. Even smarter dates go to a museum to check out history, art and science exhibits in the comfort of cooling marble, humidity-controlled gallery spaces and reliable air conditioning. Whether you prefer to look at beautiful art, ponder historical monuments or check out folk artifacts, the best part might be the intellectual-yet-flirty conversations that arise as you stroll around and grab drinks afterward. 4. Chill out at a movie multiplex all afternoon. Who could complain about an entertaining blockbuster (or two), holding hands after the lights go down, and all the candy and popcorn you could possibly want to share? Not to mention that it’s guaranteed to always be chilly in the theater, even when it’s burning up outside. There’s something about taking a date to a movie in the summer that makes me feel like a teenager again.

Step Into

Summer

As women, we are constantly evolving and growing into the best versions of ourselves. When I reflect on my own life over the past 10 years, I am amazed at how much I have accomplished. Does that mean that I was successful in the eyes of others at everything I set out to do? No. But success is measured in many ways. Making a substantial salary may be important at one period in our lives, while preparing a healthy meal and tucking our children into bed is (or was) more important during another. However, women most often take on both of these roles, and then some, simultaneously. It’s not always easy, but we make it work. No matter the status of your career, or what your demands are as you play the part of daughter, friend, wife, mother… finding a balance is ever changing. I recently looked through pictures from a friends wedding that was only three summers ago. As I scrolled through, I saw myself as this tanned and toned up Miss Thing in a sparkly cocktail dress dancing the night away. My husband and I were newlyweds ourselves, and I remember how much fun he and I had laughing and sipping cocktails with our friends that evening. Now I am sporting a more reserved wardrobe, looking a little flabbier and feeling a lot less energetic, and wouldn’t trade reading Go Dog, Go at my sons bedtime for anything in the world. It is true that our priorities shift as we evolve, but we must never lose our sense of self in the process. Whether it’s the moment you finally accept the purchase of a minivan, reflect on lessons learned from a summer fling, handle that dreadful boss in the work place, or find a way to “Give Yourself a Break” while managing life as single parent… our summer issue will leave you feeling inspired. My dear friend Melissa Schmitz shares her own inspiring journey in our spotlight story, “The Summer I Was Ugly.” Melissa reminds us that life can change in an instant, but how you can find beauty in the midst of a cruel curveball and come out stronger on the other side. During these last few weeks of summer, I hope you’ll embrace your own reality the best way you can.

6 Things You Learn From A Summer Fling 1. Heat makes you do crazy things.

There is just something about that thin layer of sweat that can be passed off as a “sun-kissed glow” that makes people turn into these insane, love-crazed zoo animals. We’re all just caged in together — whether back home for the summer, away at the beach, or just in a place where the humidity index is simply unfortunate — ready for someone to make a move. It’s the kind of weather that, between the general dampness in the air and the egregious amount of skin showing everywhere, takes every regular ol’ party at least three steps in the “Roman orgy” direction… half the work is already done for you. So many flings start simply because the weather is right and you’re within the proper proximity to a body of water.

2. Even something brief can hurt when it ends.

While most summer flings are just that — something that isn’t terribly serious and has an expiration date. Although when it’s time to put on a light sweater and leave things behind, things aren’t always easy. Somehow we can convince ourselves, at the beginning of June, that we’ll be fine when the end of August rolls around. And yet, when that moment comes, we often start scrambling to make it work through the distance, the difficulty, and the new opportunities of the fall. Even though they only take a small slice of our life, relatively speaking, it’s never easy to just close the door on a relationship and say, “Okay, that has run its appropriate course. Time to never speak with or think of this person ever again.”

3. Sunburns are bad for sex.

We often like to romanticize summer flings as a time when we’re at our most sexy and beach-ready. Although, there is this whole business of going back from a day at the beach to a romp in the bedroom, only to find yourself the general color and fragility of an overripe tomato. Unless you want the soundtrack to your lovemaking to be “Rub some aloe on my back, baby,” you’re probably going to have to abstain for at least a little while. *SPF 50: The unsung hero of summer fling sex.

4. You can associate someone forever with a certain location.

part of the boardwalk or that rickety dock on the lake, we can still feel in our bones the way it felt when we were there… with them. There are places that you can’t visit after it’s over. After you kiss on that sand, drank granitas under that awning, or had a picnic in that field — what could it possibly have to offer to you alone? So many of the moments we spend in summer become completely foreign to us once the weather turns cold again. The same places we once drank beer and stayed up all night with friends and our summer fling, stoking the fire and feeling like we were never going to actually have to grow up, have become filled with people too young to recognize anymore. Summer spots do stay in that idyllic, youthful phase — but we grow out of them. A summer spent with someone who was perfect for three months can be felt down to the last blade of grass but can’t be recreated.

5. A whole relationship can happen on fast-forward.

How is it that we can manage to fall in love so deeply with someone in such a short amount of time? No matter what makes summer love so intense, it explodes and fizzles out just as quickly as the fireworks you watched together from the perfect vantage point on a boat. One minute, you’ve just met this awesome person down by the water; the next, you’ve never been so taken with another human being in your life. As soon as we have even an ounce of perspective on how ridiculous we were, we regard summer flings as absurdly immature.

6. Sometimes it’s nice when things don’t last.

While the ending to a summer fling can certainly be hard, and we can even attempt to drag it out painfully into the fall, often to be killed off in the Turkey Dump (for college students), it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You can learn a few lessons from a nice person who treated you well and made the summer fly by. And even if the love doesn’t end up being soul shattering, you likely will take something from it for the rest of your life. It’s quite lovely to be able to look back on a relationship with someone who, though certainly not the love of your life, made you feel wonderful and for whom you wish only the best.

Isn’t it strange how, even years after we leave that one VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3

VACATION IDEAS ON A SHOESTRING

By Tisa Silver

J

ust because a big vacation is not in your budget, doesn’t mean you have to stay housebound. There are many affordable vacation ideas out there, for those interested in a little local entertainment. These four ideas can help you find a cheap vacation to accommodate your finances. The Beach in Your Backyard Instead of hopping on a plane to an island destination, try driving to a beach near you. The East Coast is lined with beaches and boardwalks from the Jersey Shore to Martha’s Vineyard and Virginia Beach to Hilton Head, SC and Miami. West coast beaches include Huntington Beach and several near San Diego. There are also plenty of beaches to choose from along the Gulf Coast as well as in Canada. Your Coastal Complement on This Continent Why fly overseas to another country when you can take advantage of the North American continent? Write down the attractions you are traveling to see and find a complimentary venue in your region. Living on the East Coast and thinking about a trip to Las Vegas? Save some money and drive to Atlantic City. Other destinations with casinos include Niagara Falls, Kansas City and New Orleans. If you are looking to visit a big city, swap New York City for Los Angeles. For mountains, consider swapping between the Rockies and the Appalachians. You can experience similar scenery without spending as many dollars. (A short vacation can give you a boost in energy and allow you to recharge your batteries for work.

Trade a Cruise for the Ferry Instead of taking a cruise and making several quick stops, visit two destinations for as long as you like and ride the waves while avoiding the drama of getting seasick. Ferries offer a relatively cheap way to transport you, your family, your luggage and your car from one venue to the next. Some popular ferries include the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (New Jersey to Delaware), the Rocky-Hill Glastonbury Ferry (Connecticut) and the Columbia River Ferry (Oregon to Washington). Some popular pedestrian only ferries include the Toronto Island Ferry and New Orleans Steamboat Cruise. Try a Regular Park for Your Amusement Admission to popular amusement parks can top $50 per person. Try visiting a state or national park for a fraction of the price. Some popular national parks include Lake Mead National Recreation Area (Arizona/ Nevada), the Everglades (Florida) and the Blue Ridge Parkway (North Carolina/Virginia), which makes for a nice scenic route to several local attractions. Check the calendars for your city, state or regional parks office to find out what tours and activities are available this summer. Also check to see if advance registration is required to reserve your spots. The Bottom Line Summer is the season for vacations. A tight budget should not prevent you from enjoying your time off. Instead of staying home, explore cheaper alternatives that can provide you with equally good times for substantially lower costs. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3

JUST THE TIPS

PLACING AN OFFER BY LAUREN CRONMILLER You have found the house of your dreams and you want to place an offer. Many of my clients come to me and say, “I was watching HGTV and they said to place an offer 10% below asking.” Needless to say I cringe at this advice. Especially when this statement comes as we are looking at a house that has only been on the market 3 days, and there are 7 business cards of other realtors lined up on the kitchen counter. Placing an offer 10% below asking will not get you the house. Here are items to consider when placing an offer… Do you have a house to sell? Today’s market is a changing market. There is still the stigma that a house will forever be on the market. If you have a house to sell, get it on the market as quickly as possible. Offers are being denied because of home sale contingencies. (Your home is on the market but hasn’t sold.) However, offers are being accepted if the agreement is contingent upon the settlement of your home. (Your home has sold and you’re waiting to go to settlement.) What are similar houses selling for? Ask your realtor to see what has sold within the past 6 months in the surrounding area or do on online search yourself to compare properties. How many days has it been on the market? Put yourself in the homeowner’s shoes. If you just listed a home, what kind of offer would you accept to take it off the market and not hold out for a better one? On the other hand, if it has been on the market for several months, most likely the home is over priced. So start negotiating.

What has the activity been on the home? If there has been a ton of activity, you should consider closer to asking price. If the house hasn’t received many showings, than most likely the house is overpriced. Again, start negotiating. Are you asking for seller assist? The homeowner’s bottom line is not what you are paying. For example a $200,000 sale price with a 3% seller assist is really $194,000 for the homeowner. If I am starting to see multiple offers on a home. I always ask my clients to give their “final and best” offer. There is no negotiating. If my client doesn’t get the house, I want them to say that the offer they presented was the best offer they were willing to give. The harsh reality when multiple offers occur is that the seller wants the most money for the house, in the fastest time the buyer can settle, and with little to no inspections. Since you are buying the home, the offer is reflective on what you are comfortable with. My clients have won the bid with an asking price offer, 30day settlement, and had home inspections completed. The most important advice I can give when placing an offer is to place one you feel comfortable with and an offer that will not offend the seller. Two happy parties makes for an easier, smoother transaction. Happy Bidding! Lauren Cronmiller is a real estate agent for the Cronmiller Team at Keller Williams Real Estate in Doylestown. She has been a realtor since 2006 receiving Philadelphia’s 5 Star Real Estate Agent award for the past 4 years. command-and-control bosses don’t enjoy extended debate and discussion, and they aren’t adept at dealing with any type of people problem. Helping your boss compensate for his lack of soft t skills won’t earn you thanks. In fact, he may resen even your ability to do something he can’t. Even if you worked for the world’s most fabulous manager, you need to be visible, or you’ll miss out on opportunities. hear complaints from clients about “crashing” mid-day or “needing something sweet”. When I suggest a piece of fruit to satisfy their sweet cravings, they look at me like I have seven heads. The problem with fruit not satisfying a craving is that we are so used to our foods being very sweet. Added sugar is everywhere. Artificial sweeteners are present too, and they are much sweeter than traditional sweeteners. Since we have become used to the very sweet flavor, when we eat a food without added sugar it doesn’t taste good to us. It’s not news that we shouldn’t be eating too much sugar. Decreasing the amount we consume daily seems like fruitless task (excuse the pun). Will it really make a difference? Are you really taking in copious amounts of added sugar? Well, yes, it will make a difference. Added sugars are related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Current research is evaluating added sugars’ link to chronic inflammation and other diseases as well. You need to take a look at your nutritional lifestyle to see what amounts of sugars you are taking in. To clarify, added sugars are any sugars that were not in a food as it grew. So, if you are eating a processed food product, most of the sugar in there is probably added. Take a look at your bread, tomato sauce and granola bars, for example. It doesn’t matter if the sugar is a “natural” source. Fruit juice concentrates and cane sugar, they’re natural and added

sugars in our diet. Do not worry about the sugar that comes naturally in fruits and vegetables. You get so many great things from them, such as vitamins and antioxidants. These nutrients are wrapped up in a package that is helpful to our bodies. Our body needs consistent levels of blood sugar, but it will make it from our foods. Therefore you do not need to eat any added sugars. To help regulate your sugar intake, start by taking a look at the sugar amount listed on the nutrition facts label from the foods that you are eating. Try to keep this number as low as possible. For reference, the upper limit of added sugar for a woman is 6 tsp, which equals 24g. (The average American is taking in 88g!) Read through the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed from most to least. Food companies are adding multiple sources of sugars to have them fall lower on the list. Check out all the sources. Choose foods as close to their natural state as often as possible. They will provide a more even energy level and satisfied feeling. After removing a lot of the added sugars I bet you will start feeling better. Erika Ringwald is a Registered Dietitian with Erika Ringwald Nutrition. 6 Tips For

Sexy Summer Skin By Kristianne Young So you’ve been taking a dip in the pool every once in awhile, being adventurous with your girlfriends on early morning hikes, and slathering on sunscreen like a good beauty should. Unfortunately, all of your favorite summer activities (including sunscreen) can tend to dry out your skin and ashy alligator legs are not the best look for the most skin-baring season. Here are a few tips that will ensure you continue to enjoy your summer activities, but with smooth, supple, moisturized skin…

Take a quick shower after swimming. Chlorine is a major culprit in drying out the skin. Too much exposure to chlorine during the summer can even result in an itchy rash. Speaking of showers, taking a shower that is too hot can also dry out your skin. Try taking a lukewarm shower instead. This might be hard for you steam lovers, but believe us the results are worth it. According to the National Eczema Association, the best time to rub in your favorite moisturizers is within three minutes of taking a bath or shower. This will seal in the water and moisture making the skin less dry. After you’ve gotten done with the rest of your body, don’t forget to moisturize your face. Your best friend will be a facial moisturizer that moisturizes and contains sunscreen. Though we know that exfoliating has its place and time, if you are suffering from extra dry skin this summer, skip the beads and loofah and use a soft washcloth or your hands to lather up. Our final tip is the hardest to accomplish - drinking enough water! The more water you drink the more soft and smooth your skin will be. If you are finding it hard to reach your eight glasses a day, try adding slices of cucumbers and oranges for a refreshing twist. Eating fruits and veggies high in water is also a good way for to get in a few extra ounces. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3

SPOTLIGHT

After speaking with my doctor and joining a support group, I spent time considering my new self. No longer able to rely on superficial beauty, I was forced to overcome insecurities and ask, “Who am I, really?”

THE SUMMER I WAS UGLY

A breast cancer patient’s road to finding inner beauty By Melissa Schmitz

T

he doctor was right. On day 14 of chemotherapy treatment, my hair started falling out. With tears in my eyes, I approached my husband, arms outstretched, hands clenching two wads of long brown hair. “Oh, honey. Come here,” my husband offered as he wrapped his arms around me. “I guess it’s time,” I answered trying to sound courageous. Together we found the clippers and buzzed off my remaining hair. I convinced myself I could pull off the G.I. Jane look. After all, I was an attractive 40 year-old woman, tall, in shape, with long brown hair. The key word—was. That description no longer fit. The woman in the mirror was a stranger. The cancer had done more than take my hair. It had weakened my immune system and left my skin pale and irritated. My face was swollen and dark circles surrounded both eyes.

With each treatment, my womanly charms continued to fade and so did my confidence. I gained fifteen pounds. Stairs winded me. This once avid hiker could hardly walk the dog around the block. No longer did I strut with purpose. Instead, I crept along avoiding attention. Not that people are rude to a bald, young, women, obviously in chemotherapy treatment. They are not. They are, in fact, very compassionate. Empathy etched on their face. I could see it when we made accidental eye contact. I could hear it when they offered to help. Although I was grateful for the compassion, I could not forget that they were starring because my appearance was shocking not striking, weak not strong, pathetic not appealing. Insecurities mounted. I wondered how my colleagues would view me at work. I worried about making strong first impressions. The idea of intimacy was frightening.

Looking at my reflection was painful. I was miserable, physically and mentally. Could it be that I relied too heavily on physical characteristics to feel good about myself? After speaking with my doctor and joining a supportgroup, I spent time considering my new self. No longer able to rely on superficial beauty, I was forced to overcome insecurities and ask, “Who am I, really?” After a few months of soul searching, I began to notice changes. I found patience and understanding I never had before. I slowed down and took time to notice. I listened more carefully. I forgave more easily, and I loved more deeply. I stopped looking for my beauty in the mirror. Instead I looked for it in my words, my actions and my thoughts.

Now as a celebrate 1year as a survivor, I find myself more content in life. My career fits like a glove. My friends and family are part of my daily routine. My marriage is more deeply committed. I find myself feeling lucky, not only to have survived my cancer, but also to have experienced it. Cancer may have robbed me of my physical beauty, but it introduced me to my inner beauty. Melissa Schmitz currently teaches reading and language arts. She lives in Exeter Township with her husband, Scott, and golden retriever, Sammy. Together they enjoy hiking, skiing, sailing and spending time at their rustic cabin near Dingmans Ferry.

Up All Night

I

By Lisa Walters

was looking forward to a summer at the poolcooling off my blossoming body and squeezing in extra time with my son, before his sister arrives in September. I am starting to realize that motherhood interferes with all the sexiness and relaxation that summer has offered me in the past. Unaware that my son was on the verge of busting through a set of molars, I lathered him up with sunscreen and schlepped him off to his first visit at the local pool. When we arrived, the baby pool was closed due to chemicals not being settled. I had to drag Jack into the big pool full of splashing hyperactive tweens, teens, and disgruntled mothers that would have rather been at the baby pool area. My adventurous son was unsure, whiny, and clingy the entire time. I think we lasted 20 minutes total, before my sciatica flared up and I whisked us home. “He hates the pool! There goes the summer!” I texted to my husband, before pulling out of the parking lot. That evening, my son’s teething fever was in full swing. It was now clear to me why he had been so attached to momma bear. Understandably, he was up a few times that night. Sometime after midnight we fell asleep together on the bedroom floor, but were woken up by a horrendous thunderstorm by 2 a.m. I decided to relocate my frightened feverish child to mommy and daddy’s bed. As I attempted to shut my eyes, I realized the party was just beginning. My husbands K9 partner had been pacing our bedroom and decided to jump up

in bed. Yes, this is a dog that is specifically trained to respond to sirens and gunshots, yet he is shaking in my arms over a thunderstorm. Our typically nervous Golden Retriever and my husband continued to snore away, unfazed. If I had any level of strength or ability to sit up, I would have forced the dog back down onto the floor where he belonged and put my son back in his crib. But I couldn’t move because both arms were pinned down by weight of babies needing love and comfort, and both sides of my shirt appeared to resemble a lactating woman. (Dog drool on one side and toddler head sweat on the other…) That night, I stayed awake comforting my son and reflecting on motherhood. Mothers plan their summertime fun around their children’s needs and interests. We’d rather spend a day watching the joy on their faces at the zoo than visiting a winery. (Did I really just write that?) During July and August, we seem to cram in experiences with our children that the hustle and bustle of the school year doesn’t allow. It’s about making sure our kids have sunscreen on and not whether or not our flip flops match our bathing suit. Our once cute figures are now covered up with tankinis and sarongs, which are tugged at by cries and tiny hands, and we are happier than we’ve ever been. I don’t mind hanging up the thought of a perfect tan for a few years. This is motherhood… and it isn’t always sexy or relaxing, but it’s important and it’s worth it. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3

For Calista, Someday Is Today.

I’m Too Sexy

for My Mini-Van By Judi Thompson

A

Nine-Time State Taekwondo Champion Violist, The Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra PA Cyber Class of 2014 My life.

Whether I’m in training to defend my state Taekwondo title for the ninth time, or fitting in extra piano or viola practice for the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra, it’s good to know my school can keep up with me. LOL!

My choice. These are the things I’ve developed interests in over time. These are the things that help to make my life complete, you know? I love that I can pursue my interests and have a school that encourages me to pursue them. My school. My school. PA Cyber, no doubt. With all that I do, and all that I like to do, I’m glad I go to a public school that challenges me educationally, while giving me the flexibility to chase my personal dreams. It’s a really cool school! It’s the kind of public school you always hoped for your children someday…available today.

PACYBER.ORG 1-888-PACYBER

fter having four children, I wasn’t feeling very sexy. I walked around the house with spit up on my shirt, a dishtowel thrown over my shoulder and oatmeal in my hair. My daily conversations consisted of telling one child not to wipe his nose on another one’s shirt, not to step on the baby, and not to color on the wall. When my husband and I set out to buy a bigger vehicle for our growing family, I had already decided I was NEVER going to drive a mini-van. I was way too cool for that. There is absolutely nothing special for me about a mini-van. They re-design them every so often, come out with a few new colors, and now you can get them with theater systems. No matter what they do they’re still just a minivan, and I was not going to drive one. What I did drive was my husband crazy, while avoiding the inevitable. We left the dealer with a brand new shiny mini-van. The color has some really cool name, but it looks like “don’t notice me” blue. It has a great stereo, rides nice, gets okay gas mileage, but it’s a mini-van! It doesn’t have a “Hemi” (not that I know what that is), it doesn’t scream, “look, I’m crazy and lovin’ it!” It’s kind of like a drone bee… a mini-van is a vehicle that just gets the job done. I don’t know what I thought I would drive with four kids. After looking at SUVs I realized they weren’t really com-

kid spot

u fortable for our family of six. Throw in a bunch of car seats and it was a little too tight. The first time I drove it to the grocery store, I realized I was not the only one driving one of these boring vehicles. Most of us who have more than two children drive them because it’s practical and smart. Although I never pictured myself driving a mini-van, I’ll admit, I’ve gotten really good use out of it. I guess it’s not really important what I drive and what it looks like to others. It’s what is inside that counts- my beautiful babies. I’m sure they don’t care if there’s a hemi or not. There is a lot of screaming going on in the backseats and some people do think I’m crazy with four children, but I am lovin’ it! When my husband is buckling up our little ones and looks at me with love in his eyes because of the magic we’ve created, the mini-van turns into a beautiful carriage carrying our prince and princesses. And suddenly I feel very sexy. Judi Thompson is a freelance writer, musician, business owner and coach, cancer survivor, a proud mom of four and a not so proud driver of a mini-van. 6 Safety Tips For Your Dog This Summer Season By Laura Firszt ummer is a fun time for you and your pet, but it also brings its share of dangers. Exposing your dog to excessive sun and heat can lead to sunburned skin or worse. Protect your best friend’s well-being with these season-savvy tips.

S

Sun Safeguard

Strange though it may seem, dogs can get sunburn and even skin cancer. Particularly susceptible are canines with short hair; pink noses; or fur loss due to illness, hormonal fluctuations or allergy. The lightly furred inguinal area on the belly is extremely vulnerable. Keep your pet out of strong sunlight as much as possible and use sunscreen especially made for dogs. Be very careful with a dog that normally lives outside – even though your yard may be shady when you leave for work in the morning, it might become blistering hot as the sun’s direction changes. If despite your precautions, your BFF does get burnt, cool the skin with a lukewarm bath; then apply natural neem oil. Caution: never use zinc oxide on a dog, as it is toxic to canines.

Cool Exercise

Walking, running and general outdoor romps with your pet are all part of the pleasure of owning a dog. Steamy summer days mean that you and Fido will have to modify your workout routine, though. Overexertion in the heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke for your four-legged friend. Schedule long walks for breezier early morning or evening hours. Alternatively, use outdoor time for short bathroom breaks, followed up with more active exercise indoors where it’s cooler. Or take your pup for a swim – under your careful supervision. Learn to read doggy signals in the heat; refusal to move or lying down on the ground mean that he or she has had enough for the time being.

Paw Protection

When you do go for walks, try to make sure your dog has grass or dirt underfoot if possible. Protect tender paws from hot asphalt or sand with lightweight dog booties or one of the barrier creams for year-round

use that are made from food grade wax. (Make sure any ointment or other topical treatment is edible, because chances are your dog will lick it.) Some owners actually put their pooch into a dog stroller until they arrive at the park or other cool destination.

Water

Wherever you’re headed, bring along plenty of water for Rover as well as yourself. Make sure the water comes in a comfortable container for your pet to sip small amounts of water from. Don’t allow your pet to gulp, as this may cause vomiting. Use a tip-proof drinking bowl in the car. In the yard, leave out a full water dish but change it regularly to prevent mosquito infestation; you can give the old water to your plants. A gravity fed water bowl is another excellent solution.

Cool Equipment

There are a number of accessories to help your pal beat the heat. A cooling collar, bandanna, vest or coat just needs a short spell in the freezer or a cold water soak to keep your dog comfortable for several hours. Indoors, your buddy may find your tile floor cool to lie down on, but a little hard; a soft cooling bed will take care of that problem. A small fan can be helpful if you crate your pet.

Special Precautions

Never leave your dog in a parked car without the air conditioning running on a hot – or warm – day. Even with the window open, your vehicle’s interior temperature can rise to a dangerous level. While a short haircut might look like a good idea in the summer, your animal’s fur actually serves as insulation against the heat. Brushing is advisable, though, to remove the results of winter shedding and improve air circulation. During a heat wave, ask a trusted neighbor or two to check on the dog while you are out. This is extra-important if your area is subject to frequent summer power failures … meaning no air conditioning for several hours.

Make Your Bedtime Consistant It’s hard to plan for some alone time in the evening when your kids go to bed at a different time every night. Instead, implement a consistent bedtime routine so that your kids can anticipate rest and learn to fall asleep on their own. If you have early risers, you may also want to put an alarm clock in each bedroom and teach your kids to play quietly until at least 7:00 a.m.

“Me Time” for Single Parents Ways to Create Time for Yourself While Raising Your Kids By Jennifer Wolf Single parenting is exhausting because your children depend on you for everything. You’re responsible for all aspects of your family’s well-being, from managing the finances to keeping track of homework assignments, meals, and extra-curricular activities. The only way you can sustain the energy needed to do this job well is to create some pockets of “me time” where you can get in touch with who you are as an individual and replenish your energy levels. Here are ten tips for carving out that precious “me time” on a regular basis: Get Up Earlier You’ve probably heard this suggestion before. This time, I want you to do something different: Try it! Until you’ve applied this strategy for at least seven days in a row, you’re not going to realize how powerful it is. Start by setting your alarm for fifteen minutes before you really need to get up. Then use that time to listen to the quiet, write in a journal, or engage in another activity that restores your soul. Do not, however, use this time to get a head start on chores. Use this time for you.

Use Your Shower Time Those few minutes you spend in the shower each day are probably the most regular “alone time” you get. Plan to use it well! Purchase some energizing aroma therapy products that you love, and make the most of the few minutes you have to yourself. While you’re there, take some deep breaths and let the water wash away some of that tension you’re carrying. Take a Walk on Your Lunch Hour Let’s be honest. You don’t need to hear another story about your co-workers’s cat; so at least once a week, break away from the employee break room and go for a short walk on your lunch hour. This doesn’t mean skipping lunch altogether, of course. You need those calories to sustain you through the afternoon. Eating a light meal and going out for a brisk walk is a great way to clear your head and exercise your body. Maximize Your Commute Most of us spend a considerable amount of time in our cars. Instead of turning on the radio or making another phone call, turn everything off and enjoy a brief period of quiet. This simple habit can help you respond effectively to the challenges you face as a single parent, rather than reacting from your emotions or exhaustion.

VIRGO Aug. 24 through Sept. 22 The planet in charge of good luck has moved into the area of your chart that focuses on your emotional well-being, peace of mind, and inner reserves. You are ready for a new attitude and are ready to give yourself permission to feel good about who you are and how you are living your life. If you do notice things that are not in sync with your sense of inner peace, then now is the time to begin making changes so that you are able to maintain a sense of peace without having to force yourself or put a huge amount of effort into it. LIBRA Sept. 23 through Oct. 23 Hopefully, you went on vacation last month. Because this month is all about work, financial goals, and climbing the Ladder of Success. You have a handful of planets moving through the area of your chart that governs success and leadership. They are doing all they can to help you either take on leadership roles or make nice with your boss so that you can be awarded key assignments. Towards the end of the month, group activities, committee meetings, teamwork, and socializing are starting to become more important. SCORPIO Oct. 24 through Nov. 22 You could be torn between wanting to take time off from work for a much needed and well deserved vacation and wanting to stay and help fix the problems happening at work. The good news is that most of your work related dramas are going to calm down next month. If you do choose to go on vacation, they will interrupt you with phone calls. If you don’t go on vacation just yet, then make sure to weave plenty of playtime and intellectually interesting activities into your schedule so that you can shake off the daily dramas once you leave the office each day. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 through Dec. 21 A lot of romantic or financial trust issues

are coming up. There is a lot of chaos in this area of your life and you are having a tough time navigating who to believe, who to love, and/or who to invest in. The good news is that the portion of your chart that focuses on inner peace, tranquility, prayer, meditation, and intuition is sending you a strong stable energy to help you quiet your mind and figure out what is true for you. So, even though this is not necessarily fun, you pull through just fine because of you are your own best council. CAPRICORN Dec. 22 through Jan. 20 You and your spouse, lover, best friend, or business partner (or possibly a rival, competitor, or enemy) have been in a battle on and off for months. This month, you do have some more arguments concerning your home, private life, roommates, parents, or retirement plans. But overall the two of you are making a lot of progress towards working things out. You are able to socialize together, network, hang out with each other’s families, shop, bargain hunt, negotiate, and pretty much do all of your social bonding together without trouble. Your only real issue is about something or someone involving your private life. And that battle ends this month. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 through Feb. 18 You have a great deal of positive energy promoting the idea that you should be focusing primarily on achieving your financial, fitness, and/or professional goals. However, you also have quite a few hurdles to overcome along with way. You could also find yourself entering into a new partnership or rivalry. It could be a fun playful rivalry or a real professional rival. If it is a professional, romantic, or social partnership that you are creating, you could find that your boss, father, or professional goals are clashing with this new person in your life. PISCES Feb. 19 through Mar. 20 The planet of good luck and adventure has left your playtime sector and entered your work and health sector. It should be a lot easier to get through your daily tasks and to begin working on a fitness routine. The planet in charge of passion and personal power has left your romantic and financial trust sector and has moved into the area of your chart that encourages you to learn all kinds of new things about life and ways of broadening your horizons. You can expect to see some big changes in your life over the

next few weeks as you adjust to these new areas of interest. ARIES Mar. 21 through April 20 The planet of good luck, adventures, and joy moves into the area of your chart that governs happiness and playtime activities. Your home life is undergoing quite a lot of activity. On the one hand you are dealing with something or someone that keeps upsetting you. But on the other hand, you keep finding ways to channel more romantic and financial stability into your home and private life. So maybe the thing that annoys you is also motivating you to make some positive changes. TAURUS April 21 through May 21 The area of your chart that focuses on interpersonal communications, negotiations, commerce, local communities, and getting your point across is experiencing a lot of activity this month. It is a great month for socializing, hanging out with local friends and family, and for bargain hunting and sales. The downside to spending so much time with these people is that they drag you into the drama, dysfunction, and secrets. But the good side is that you and a partner or rival are inspired to work things out. GEMINI May 22 through June 21 You have some great opportunities to work towards achieving your financial goals through your professional activities. Unfortunately, you still need to watch out for allowing social connections to negatively affect your financial standing. You could simply be spending too much money on social outings, Internet activities, or membership dues. Or you could be dealing with a friend’s constant request for loans. Whatever it is, you need to avoid mixing finances with your social activities at this time. The good news is that you are entering into a year of lucky commercial, business, and bargain hunting opportunities. CANCER June 22 through July 22 The planet of good luck enters the area of your chart that governs wealth and selfworth. The next year should be a good one financially. However, to begin with, you are encouraged to set financial goals and consider tightening your budget in order to achieve those goals. Your loved ones, hobbies, and playtime activities might suffer for a bit, but it will be worth it.

Roxanne

(part three)

By Georgina Young-Ellis A week after the encounter, Roxanne called the number on the card the stranger had given her, though there was no name, simply a Manhattan phone, and London address. More than once she’d started to call, then stopped. But his unusual beauty, his mysterious air, and the recollection of the smell of his skin drew her like a drug. A recording said, “Leave a message,” the three short words enough to assure her it was him. Though they’d only had a five-minute conversation before they’d made love, his voice was etched in Roxanne’s memory.

JULY 9-AUGUST 10

She hung up quickly, breathless. Maybe a text would be better. “It’s me, the girl from the café,” she wrote. A few minutes later, her phone buzzed. “Meet me at the Nile Building tomorrow, 48th floor, 3:00 pm exactly. Show the front desk my card. Wear a skirt.” Her heart pounded as she texted back, “I’ll be there.”

gasping when he realized she was bare underneath. Effortlessly he lifted her off the ground. She wrapped her legs around his waist. He continued to kiss her, pressing her up against the wall. She unzipped his fly and drew out his ample erection, while he grabbed a tiny package from his pocket and ripped it open with his teeth. She took the protection, rolled it into place, and guided him to enter her. It was her turn to gasp. How was it possible he fit so perfectly, so deeply? He slowly ground his hips in a circular motion, finding each point of pleasure — places she didn’t even know she had. She was climaxing while he continued his rhythm. She only became aware time had passed when he reached ecstasy as well, his mouth forming a silent cry. Her rapture intensified with the added pressure but before she could scream, he clapped a hand over her mouth. Then, quickly, they separated and arranged their clothes. She pulled a pair of panties out of her bag and slipped them on. He turned the key on the panel again. The door opened. He pressed the lobby button, stepped out, and the door closed again. Alone, she descended. Georgina Young-Ellis lives in Queens, New York with her artist husband and musician son. She is the author of The Time Mistress Series, a romantic time-travel series, spiced with adventure.Titles include The Time Baroness, set in Jane Austen’s England; The Time Heiress, staged in pre-Civil War New York City; and The Time Contessa, a journey to Renaissance Italy.

At 2:58 the next day she walked into the Sixth Avenue skyscraper. When she showed the card, she was directed to an elevator dedicated only for the 48th floor. She went up, the door opened, and there he was, waiting. He stepped in and turned a key on the panel. The doors slid shut but the elevator didn’t move. Then, without a word, he pulled her close and kissed her hard. This time, he didn’t remove his clothes, but ran his hand under her dress, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3
