A warm welcome to the September issue of Local People Macclesfield - Macclesfield’s small magazine with the BIG circulation! And talking of which, if ever you don’t receive your copy of LP, please let us know. Well, back to school in a day or two with all that brings! I hope you all had good summers despite the weather! Somehow the British spirit gets us through, but it does get a bit tedious after a while, doesn’t it!!? Maybe we will have an Indian summer, who knows! I have to say, the Scottish Highlands weren’t actually too wet after all - which was good! Once routine has been re-established, we will be working more regularly from our new ‘shop’ hopefully, but it will still be open anyway on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to 11.30am so do pop in and see us. We have a few ideas in the pipeline, so watch this space!! This issue is our 7th birthday issue, of which we are really proud, and it just goes to show that we must be doing something right!! Thank you to everyone who has given us their support over the 7 years from our loyal advertisers to our wonderful distributors. How Times have Changed - or have they?!! This month, our historical offering is something of a more visual nature!! Dennis Whyte of the Macclesfield branch of the Cheshire Family History Society asked us if we would like to take a copy of an advert he had spotted and found amusing in an old programme for the 1929 Macclesfield Carnival which had been lent to him by a friend. A sort of Local People of its day as it also featured many ads for local businesses, with some very recognisable local names. Was Mr Fred Orme, the taxi driver, being humorous, or was he deadly serious?!! With our thanks to Mr Stephen Bradley of Gawsworth for the loan of the document. Invitation for proposals to operate the cafĂŠ at the Heritage Centre, Macclesfield The Silk Heritage Trust is inviting proposals from businesses or organisations to operate the cafĂŠ at the Heritage Centre in MacclesďŹ eld. The Trust generates income from the various users of the Heritage Centre, including the lease of the cafĂŠ. With its own entrance and terrace, the cafĂŠ is fully accessible either through the museum or via a separate entrance, enabling the cafe to trade outside museum opening hours. The operator will also provide event catering to meeting rooms in the Heritage Centre, which are popular venues for meetings and conferencing. The Silk Heritage Trust is keen to keep growing and developing the visitor oer at the Heritage Centre, and increasing the number of visits from those whose primary reason is not the museum. We want the Heritage Centre to be a destination

of choice, broadening the appeal of the cafĂŠ so that it attracts a larger range of customers. We’re seeking creative and enterprising ideas from dynamic, forward thinking and innovative companies that will contribute to our aim of developing the Heritage Centre as a day visitor destination which attracts and caters for a wide range of people. Brush a small loaf tin with oil and line it with greaseproof paper. Put the flour, spice, carrots, bicarbonate of soda, sultanas, coconut, nuts and sugar, stir all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then make a well in the middle. Mix the eggs and oil together in a jug and pour into the centre of the well. Gradually bring the mixture in together and stir it thoroughly. Pour carrot cake mix into the cake tin and place on the middle shelf in the oven. After about ž of an hour the cake will be quite brown on top but the middle will still be a little runny, place a piece of foil over the top of the cake tin and put back in the oven until the cake is cooked all the way through. When cooked turn the cake on to a wire cooling rack over a shallow tray. Whilst cooling the cake put the orange juice and sugar in a pan and heat until the sugar has melted. Prick the cake with a cocktail stick still leaving it turned upside down then pour the syrup over it and leave it to soak into the cake until the cake is completely cooled. Finally, mix the cream cheese with the sieved icing sugar, turn the cake the right way up and spread the frosting evenly all over the top, you can decorate with crumbled walnuts.

The opening night of Sugar Plums’ new premises was a much anticipated affair with the windows having been blanked out for weeks, teasing passers-by as to what original and innovative décor would grace a loyal and growing customer base. On the night of the opening party (August 9th) the excitement in the air was abundant, as people started to gather outside the distinctive purple door of the Sugar Plum brand. As to be expected, the young entrepreneurs did not disappoint and achieved the wow factor that so many businesses desire. There was a gorgeous entrance into the party with all the food and drink that one could ask for. Balloons draped from the ceiling, boasting the purple colours of the proud brand, and an wonderfully detailed array of cup cakes and macaroons by Sarah of Caketeers further highlighted the attention to detail for which Georgina and Charlene are well known. The party spread into other rooms which provided a backdrop to a fashion show by one of Macclesfield’s newest fashion retailers, The Fold, and photography by teneight. The salon itself features one of the most relaxing back-wash areas one could ask for, with mood lighting and sleek designer auto recline chairs. This really is affordable luxury for all, accented by elegant gold framed mirrors at the cutting stations. In the colour room a beautifully crafted antique bird cage commanded the attention of guests and brought a touch of chic quaintness, not often found in the world of usually cold and hard-edged salons. One of the highlights of the night was the chance to meet the new members of team Sugar Plum, from the highly talented beauty and nail technicians, to the new stylist and welcoming receptionist. The night was a huge success and showed friends and customers that salons do not have to be drenched in white walls and soulless chrome; but instead can offer a gentle touch of higher class and elegant style, as well as providing a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Could the gogglebox become a Google Box?

Although TV technology has changed dramatically over the years, with sets getting bigger, thinner and more detailed - and in some cases threedimensional - the way we use them has barely changed until now. Here’s how some of tech’s biggest names want to transform your television. Samsung’s awfully named UE40ES8000 TV shows where things are heading. Its bright 40-inch LED display can handle both 2D and 3D and more interestingly, can be controlled by waving at it. Your first wave gets the TV’s attention, and you can then change channels or volume with simple gestures. There’s a lot to gesture at. In addition to a Freeview HD tuner, there’s also integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking so that the TV can connect to your wireless network, enabling iPad-style apps such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube. You can also subscribe to film-ondemand services such as Lovefilm and Netflix, or use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a Skype application for making voice and video calls. It’s clever stuff, but there are two problems. The first is the price. At £1,499 the UE40ES8000 is the

cheapest in the range. The second is that we tend to keep our TVs for much longer than we do our computers. Will Samsung’s apps still work three years from now, or five? Will something better come along and make it obsolete? For now the smarter choice might be a box that brings similar features to your existing TV. Apple’s TV (£99) is one option, offering iTunes movie downloads and rentals as well as optional Netflix video on demand. It can also stream movies from your Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. A similar Google-powered set from Sony, the NSZ-GS7 (£200) goes on sale this summer, and a version that also includes a Blu-Ray disc player is expected later this year. If you’d considered an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 but dismissed them because you’re not too interested in games, it might be time to think again: both consoles have dropped in price (you can get them for less than £150) and become powerful multimedia systems. For example the Xbox has its own Zune video marketplace as well as apps for Sky TV, Lovefilm

and Netflix. Nintendo’s Wii is handy here, too, with both iPlayer and Netflix available, and you can even get Lovefilm and Netflix-enabled DVD players. Just bear in mind that to access those services you’ll need to connect your devices to the internet, and you’ll also need to pay a subscription fee for the video on demand services. Today’s TV technology is very clever, but the big question is whether Apple TV, Google TV or any other hightech system will take over the mainstream: many of us find Sky+ boxes and Virgin Media TiVo’s enough hassle, and adding all kinds of apps and services to the gogglebox could annoy as many people as it enthuses. There’s also the issue that technology isn’t always as good as it’s cracked up to be: despite our Xbox having both voice and gesture recognition in the shape of its Kinect sensor, we’ve often found ourselves bellowing and waggling our arms with no effect whatsoever. If your current TV set-up is doing everything you need it to do, it might be a good idea to wait a few years before upgrading. That way you’ll see what, if any, TV technology emerges triumphant.

CHESHIRE’S PREMIER ART FAIR 2012 In aid of East Cheshire Hospice Macclesfield Town Hall 28th September to 6th October. With exciting works across a range of media, from ceramics to sculpture, watercolours to oils, not to mention some nationally high profile, exceptional artists, such as Ben Kelly, Caroline Bailey, Timothy Gustard, Jenny Matthews, Richard Prime, Dean Entwistle and Rob Wilson, we are confident there will be something of interest for everyone at the right price. The new Gift Gallery will be offering mounted but unframed original work in addition to prints, cards, gifts and jewellery at reasonable prices. East Cheshire Hospice provides its services free of charge to all patients. However, it receives less than 23% of its funds from government and must raise £6,000 every day from voluntary donations so Art Fair makes a real difference to this essential local charity. The previous ART FAIR in 2010, raised £20,000 net profit for the Hospice: A great success! Stop for a moment. Take a look at your mobile. Some view it as a shiny little pocket rocket of technology that acts as a mini-computer, others think it’s just a phone. The problem is too few see it as a household bill that costs £100s a year, which can often be done for a fraction of the cost. This tweet I received (to @martinslewis, on my phone) from Peter Hore proves the point. “Mobile bill cut from £30pm to £7pm! For more than enough minutes, texts and data for my usage! Thanks!” Translate that to an annual bill and it’s a reduction from £360 to £84 – a more than handy saving. So let’s see if we can ring down the changes… 1. Do you use all your free minutes? If not, you’re likely to be one of 74% of people on the wrong contract and overpaying each month. If you regularly go above your free allowance, you’re overpaying each month for the extra you use. The balance isn’t easy, but the BillMonitor.com tool speedily analyses your bills to find the tariff to match your usage. 2. Find the right tariff at speed Don’t focus on the handset, the key is the tariff – the amount you pay for minutes, texts and data. There are comparison sites out there which can really make this easier: there’s the aforementionedBillMonitor for breadth, and to include handset choice look at MobilePhoneChecker.co.uk or MoneySupermarket.com. If you’re after a bite of Apple, iPhones aren’t cheap but use the www.mse.me/iphone tool to find the right tariff. 3. “Threatened to leave, got 500 mins, unltd texts & data for £5/mth.” As this quote from a MoneySaver shows, anyone near the end of their contract is holstering a great weapon in the form of consumer loyalty. The key is to ask for a major reduction as technology changes generally mean mobile costs are deflationary. If you don’t get it, say you’re considering leaving. Then you’ll be put through to ‘disconnections’, internally known as ‘customer retentions’, which has much more discretion to keep you. Using pay as you go – consider Giffgaff If you won’t pass a credit check, don’t want bills that’ll sneak up on you or a long contract, then PAYG is the main option. Currently the easy winner for heavy data users is Giffgaff (which uses the O2 network), at £10/month. For that you get 250 minutes plus unlimited texts and data – and extra calls and texts aren’t costly either. 5. Smartphone insurance doesn’t have to be costly Mobiles no longer just make calls. They’re our diaries, contact books, games machines and more. Losing them can cause

tears. Insurers play on this fear with hefty prices and unnecessary cover. Yet you can get cheap mobile, smartphone and iPhone insurance for £5 per month. Before you do it though, check if your home insurance or bank account covers your mobile. If not, for price, Insure And Go is around £6 a month and cover limits are high enough for smartphones (£500). There’s a £25 excess and you won’t get the next day-type replacement service the networks’ £12/mth insurance can offer though, so you need to balance it. 6. Don’t flog mobiles to any old site No one can have failed to see the adverts from the companies buying old mobiles. But don’t fall for the branding. There are many of these sites out there. There can be huge variations in the amount they pay for each handset – and they change by the day. The www.mobilevaluer.com tool compares 18 different sites and the differences can be startling, eg, the price for a Blackberry 9700 Bold ranges from £40 to £87. Of course, while using these sites is the simple option, you can often beat it on eBay. 7. Text for free with special apps If you don’t have inclusive texts or go over your limit, it can be costly. Yet Touch and WhatsApp work on many smartphones and let you message friends with the same apps worldwide for free. Even on non-smartphones, if it has web, you can save with FishText and Vyke. You will usually pay for access to data, but it’s normally just a fraction of the cost of texting. 8. Free wi-fi with your coffee, burger or beer If you’re out and about, don’t use up your mobile’s inclusive data unnecessarily – it may later push you over your data limit. Big chains like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Wetherspoons all offer free wi-fi, as do many smaller shops. Also check out My Hotspots, Free Hotspot, and Hotspot Locations for more freewi-fi areas. 9. Call freephone numbers for free from your mobile Dial a freephone number and it can bizarrely cost up to 33p/ minute from your mobile – and it won’t usually form part of your inclusive allowance. Yet there is a trick to beat this so you can call for free. The www.0800buster.com website will give you a special number to dial before calling the freephone number, which then effectively lets you call it as a normal geographic phone number. So if you’ve got free minutes, it’ll actually be free. 10. Are you paying 35p/minute to pick up your voicemail? There’s a nasty catch to voicemail. Some tariffs charge a ghastly 35p/minute for calling it if you’ve gone beyond your tariff, and it can lead to mammoth bills. If you often go over, it’s worth checking your voicemail costs – and even switching it off for that period if you have to.

The Evil Weevil The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) will always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. If you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know better.

How Do You Know You Have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to nearly any surface. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see the weevil. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually on the lower, most accessible leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head. You’ll find them in the compost or soil, close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. Unless you’re removing a plant you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it’s when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring.

What Do Vine Weevils Attack? Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers. They’re a greater problem on perennial plants and those with fleshier roots or tubers. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March and May, but also

at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are dark brown, less than 1mm diameter and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs which feed and grow until they reach full size.

What Can You Do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants, including their roots, carefully for foliage damage before introducing anything new to your garden. Avoid re-using compost in containers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot. As vine weevils can’t fly, making barriers is relatively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around the rim of containers, use a gritty mulch to reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch and try creating miniature moats around the legs of greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a bowl of water. Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls. They’re available from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and seed catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively, keep the area moist, so that the nematodes can move through the compost to attack the grubs, entering their bodies and producing a bacterial infection to kill them. The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and work best during August and September. UK’s largest Independent Builders’ Merchant opens 39th branch in Macclesfield! MKM, the UK’s largest chain of independent builders’ merchants, has recently opened its 39th branch in Macclesfield on Queen’s Avenue. The opening of the branch, which has generated 14 local jobs, on 13th August was eagerly anticipated by local trades people and the public, with some placing orders the week before.
