Welcome to the October issue of Local People Macclesfield- Macclesfield’s small magazine with the BIG circulation! The change in season from summer to autumn is usually one of my favourites. The trees are such wonderful colours (notice the fact that I am failing to mention that this year, it just doesn’t stop raining, but I digress!!), everything starts to feel more ‘cosy’ and there is a steady progression through Harvest, Halloween and Bonfire down to the festive season (although I’m trying desperately not to think too much about that at the moment!!). It’s a perfect time for snuggling on the sofa with a hot drink and taking a look at all the good things going on and local businesses advertising in this edition. For those of you who like to plan ahead, now is the time to start. You might just find inspiration for that unusual gift you’re looking for (many of our advertisers will do gift vouchers for their products or services so why not just ask) and if you would like to get your house and garden ready for the winter and festivities ahead, you’ll find all the local people you need to help within these pages. Not to mention special offers, two competitions, we have it all here ‌! I hear that the much vaunted single from RoughTwist will now be out officially from 15th October (hopefully you will be able to buy it from our office on Mill St) but you can also pre-order from their website www.roughtwist.co.uk It’s good! Finally, please get your community stuff for November and December in early as space is limited and there is always loads! Have a good month, +HDWKHU

Many of us have been away with our families somewhere this Summer and many of us were forced to get Connect 4 from the top of the wardrobe, rummage around in the loft to find Scrabble or fish a pack of cards out of the drawer. Unfortunately, for most people, it is much harder to fit an X-Box and all its games and controllers into a suitcase than a board game. The hours of agonising boredom we are put through when playing long, tiring board games is like torture, but is this true for all teenagers or are most really secret lovers of board games? Even though not many will admit it, a lot of teens really do enjoy spending time with their family playing games. Old-fashioned though they may be, board games are games which every generation will enjoy. With new inventions such as the X-Box Kinect and other game consoles coming out all of the time, teens would usually prefer to be doing these more “modern things, yet every so often it is nice to have a change and sit down with friends and family for a bit of board game fun. Making it look like they really don’t want to play is just part of the act because secretly, teens are itching to sit down at the table and start dealing out money from the Monopoly bank. These games can bring laughs and smiles to every face in the room as it becomes apparent that your aunt is a lot more competitive than you thought or you realise that your brother has hidden
£500 under the board! Although not everyone is so enthusiastic, some adults are pestered into playing cards, Ludo, Boggle, Perudo and Othello over and over again and join the fun reluctantly. Even these people can, however, get very competitive and winning becomes so important that they will carry on playing for as long as it takes. Apparently the longest ever game of Monopoly lasted a staggering 70 days. That’s 1,680 hours of property dealing! A deck of cards is all you need to make the hours fly past and they’re light, portable and pocket sized so they can be carried around everywhere. You can play Snap or Solitaire, on your own or with others. And if card games aren’t for you, you can use them to construct pyramids and towers with a steady hand. Of course, board games aren’t just for the holidays and can be played at any time. You could sit down in the evening and play an intense game of Cluedo with your family or you could have an exciting session of The Logo Game with your friends. Even though these types of games are slowly going out of date, TV tie-ins and the current craze for all things vintage, means that board games are enjoying a renaissance right now. Instead of playing on their X-Boxes, more teenagers are playing board games and enjoying the social element as well as the game itself. So, who’s up for a game of Monopoly?

1 sheet or block (320g) all-butter puff pastry, rolled out to 3-4mm kernels cut from 1 corn cob 1 small red pepper, finely diced 50g double gloucester, grated sea salt & ground white pepper 2 eggs, beaten 150ml crème fraÎche ½ tsp dijon mustard 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh chives Preheat your oven to 200°C. Gather up the off-cuts and re-roll them to make enough circles. Put them in the tins. Prick the pastry a couple of times with a fork. Put the corn, pepper, cheese and chives in a large bowl. Season. In another bowl, mix the eggs, crème fraÎche and mustard. Divide the pepper and corn mixture evenly between the pastry cases. Carefully pour over the egg mixture. Bake for 25 mins, until golden and set. Leave to cool a little in the tin, then serve warm or cold.

This month, we decided to focus on three local authors, each very different, each writing about different things, each publishing in different ways - but each highlighting local talent so hopefully something here may be of interest to you. Shrapnel Rick Hudson This is to be published by HEP at the end of September and will be available from most bookshops as well as from Amazon. Essentially, Shrapnel is a psychological thriller but has literary aspirations - it is written in a fragmented, experimental style, but is aimed at the general reader. “Silence of the Lambs meets The Life & Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Paul Lomas coldly executes his nemesis in an abandoned London basement. To fulfil his duty? To see justice done? To reap spiteful vengeance? To appease the ghost of a long dead friend? Reading like a television that constantly shifts channels, Shrapnel sucks the reader into a vortex of conflicting narratives that shock, amuse, terrify and entertain. In this fascinating and blackly funny novel the question is never ‘who killed who?’, but ‘why?’. One review states, “Nothing short of brilliant and inspiring. Horror and fantasy enthusiasts will be interested in Hudson’s work as he has constructed truly original fiction out of an over-mined genre, while writers of all genres will no doubt marvel at Hudson’s master of language and literary technique. Rick Hudson, an English Literature academic, has lived in this area since 1978 and been writing professionally since
1984. His other interests include walking, photography and music and he is currently working on an album of music co-written with the Wilmslow based composer Gordon Livingston.

Macclesfield through Time was published by Amberley Publishing in May 2012, available in local bookshops. ISBN: 978-1-4456-0759-7
Fandanzel Sarah McNaught With the subtitle, ’A Haunting Tale in the Forest’, Fandanzel is created to raise awareness amongst young and old readers alike, of nature and the countryside in a creative way, taking them on a journey that is factual and explanative, but fictionally exciting, with lots of focus on the haunting mystery of nature. ‘Fandanzel’ is a fox but not just any old fox. He is a pioneer, almost human in fact. The characters are born out of real life observations, but with a very different twist to the norm. This story offers the reader a most enchanting viewpoint on life in the countryside, around the villages of Langley, Forest Chapel and Sutton in Cheshire, and the majesty of the surrounding forest and moors. Sarah is a Langley resident, already writing a second book, and has formed a Fandanzel alliance with Friends of the Peak District. Available in the Town Hall, Waterstones, Amazon (with a 5 star review!), Fairways Garden Centre and Sutton shop. ISBN 978-178035-299-2 www.sarahmcnaught.com
This book brings together a charming selection of previously u n u s e d photographs of 'Treacle Town' which are sure to fascinate Maxonians near and far. This compilation of postcards and photographs not only illustrates aspects of the town in the nineteenth century, but also shows people and places from the 1940s, '50s and '60s, evoking memories for many Macclesfield folk who may even have forgotten they were photographed on one special occasion or another. There are many previously unpublished gems within these pages, and the old and new views in the book are sure to be of interest not only to those who were born and bred in Macclesfield, but also the many newcomers to this proud and well loved town. Paul Hurley has been a freelance writer since 2002 and is a well known author and historian for Cheshire, also available for talks and interviews. 7R DGYHUWLVH ZLWK XV MXVW FDOO

Tulip Mania Tulips are amazingly good value and have the potential to transform your flower beds and tubs next spring with their silkenpetalled, strikingly coloured blooms.
Late Planting
Tulip bulbs are best planted from the last half of October and well in to November. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers.
Gritty Bed
If your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants.
Contained Colour
Tulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decentsized pots and planters. Shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Try either a loamfree multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50 a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.
Fantastic Foliage
Many tulips also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black).
Tulip Partners
Richest red tulips surrounded by a mist of pale blue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. This wonderful combination is easy to achieve; you can sow the forget-menot seed now, as you plant the bulbs, or if you prefer sow them early in the year, just before the bulbs emerge. The display you achieve will be breathtakingly beautiful.
Long-lived Lovelies
In most gardens tulips are not the longest living bulbs, however you can always try growing the so-called species tulips such as Tulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. They have smaller, less-showy flowers and will be considerably more expensive initially but they look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in the right spot. After a few years a carpet of species tulips can be achieved, and will take your breath away.
Good Companions
Tulips look great with each other. Try combining the richly purple-black leaved Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purple tulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackier effect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, or the green ‘spring green’ tulip, combined with any low-growing shrub. Now is the best time of year to think tulips - start planting and transform your garden for spring. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com. LEWIS Cut car costs
By Martin Lewis
The average cost of running a new car is up to a hefty £6,000 a year, according to the AA. So it’s hardly surprising the cost of motoring is one of the single biggest issues affecting people’s finances today – even after the fuel duty rise has been postponed.
pressure’s correct, taking off unused roof racks and so on. Find the cheapest forecourt with www.petrolprices.com and use the top credit cards offering cashback (fully repaid so there’s no interest) to get 3% back on all fuel spending.
Here are 10 quick tips to drive down the cost of motoring.
Combine these techniques and many regular drivers could save £500+ a year. See www.moneysavingexpert.com/petrol for full how-to.
1. Is your photocard valid? Even though your licence may be valid, you risk a £1,000 fine if the photo is out of date. These need renewing every 10 years and 1.8m are out of date. To find out if yours is one of them, take a look at section 4b on your licence to see the renewal date. If it’s expired renew it ASAP, though it will cost £20 to do. 2. Don’t use a comparison site, use two If you are looking to compare car insurance, make sure you use more than one comparison site. Each comparison site looks at different firms, so combine them to make sure you get the best coverage. At the moment my top two picks to combine are Gocompare and MoneySupermarket, then add the big insurers they miss, including Aviva and Direct Line, and Admiral if you’ve more than one car in the home. Many more ways to slash costs at www.moneysavingexpert. com/carinsurance 3. Unfair parking ticket? Challenge it Getting a ticket slapped on your window can be a nightmare. While we’re to blame at times, sometimes they do arrive unfairly. I remember parking at 7pm by a “no parking until 6:30pm” sign and finding a ticket when I got back – so hastily I took a picture. Turned out it was in a new “no parking till 8pm” zone but they’d forgotten to take the old sign down. My first appeal was rejected, but I persevered and they backed down. In fact, 50% of those who challenge council parking tickets they believe are unfair, and take them all the way to the Independent Traffic Penalty Tribunal, win. 4. Avoid hideous young driver insurance costs. The average price for a 17-22 year old male is £3,200, but you can cut £1,000s with the right approach. To bag a-Ford-able cover (sorry): a) Try adding a second named responsible driver to lower the risk average. One of my Twitter followers, a 20 year-old male, told me he’d been quoted over £1,600 on his own, but just £550 with 2 named drivers. b) Do full comparisons on the comparison sites (see point 2). c) Then check specialist young driver policies that use black boxes to monitor your driving. You can pay per mile with Coverbox, pay how you drive with Co-op and pay less for driving during the day with iKube. 5. Cut petrol costs by 30% The big trick to learn is how to drive as quickly, but with a technique that means you use less fuel. The key is accelerating less aggressively, moving into a higher gear earlier, and using road positioning so you brake less and the car can slow down gradually. For some, it cuts costs by 30% alone. You can also make your car more efficient by checking your tyre
6. Get basic AA breakdown cover for under £10/year (or haggle) If you’re happy with the cover you’ve got, but not the renewal price, then get on the phone and tell them. 73% of AA customers who haggle succeed, as well as 59% for RAC. So don’t be a shrinking violet - be a bloomin’ marvellous bargainer. Alternatively, if you’re getting basic new cover, the RAC or AA often pay big cashback if you go via cashback sites like www.topcashback. co.uk or www.quidco.co.uk meaning after the money back, the years policy can often cost under £10. 7. Book holiday car hire EARLY to get it for £10 a day Use www.carrentals.co.uk and www.kayak.co.uk comparisons to find the best deals - £10 a day’s sometimes possible. When you pick-up, hire firms will try to flog “excess insurance”, but it’s possible to do it for less than half the cost via comparison site www.moneymaxim.co.uk 8. DON’T assume 3rd party insurance is cheapest Bizarrely, the lowest level of cover isn’t always cheapest. Sometimes, comprehensive wins, as choosing it means you’re considered a lower risk and the discount for this sometimes outweighs the discount for getting lesser cover. So if you were going for 3rd party, also get a comprehensive quote as well. 9. Hidden council MOT centres can slash costs These are designed for councils’ own vehicles (eg, buses), but by law they must be open to the public. As they generally don’t do repairs, they’ve less vested interest in failing people, so anecdotally people get fewer fails. One example: “My 4x4 failed with a £1,200 bill at the local garage. My council-run MOT centre passed it.” Of course, if you’re happy with your local firm, stick with it, but if not, this is a useful option. A full list of them is available at www. moneysavingexpert.com/mots 10. Private parking companies CAN’T fine you It may be dressed up to look like a parking fine, but if you get a ticket at a supermarket, housing estate, etc, rather than from a council or police, it’s not a fine, it’s an invoice. So if you think it’s unfair, don’t “appeal” against it as you’re accepting its jurisdiction. Instead, as with any invoice you think is unfair, tell them - explaining why - and don’t pay it. The only way they can force you to pay is to take you to court, where a judge decides and often that’s not worth it. A Lifetime of Legal Care for You and Your Family
Bridge Street Mills Bridge Street Macclesfield SK11 6QA
Macclesfield based Thorneycroft Solicitors celebrated their 21st birthday recently with a glamorous ball for all of their staff members. Over 140 people attended the event at Shrigley Hall. Founded in 1991, Thorneycroft Solicitors has developed into a highly successful and well respected local firm offering a comprehensive range of legal services, including conveyancing, wills and probate, family law and employment law. Thorneycroft’s success is very much down to the staff, many of whom have been with the company in excess of 10 years and who, together, offer an incomparable bank of knowledge and expertise.
Was Robert Blincoe the inspiration for Dicken’s ‘Oliver twist’? Robert Blincoe died in Sutton Mills, Gunco Lane, Macclesfield on 12th December 1860 aged 68. He was buried at Pott Shrigley Church on 19th December 1860. Author John Waller’s book ‘The Real Oliver Twist, a Life that Illustrates an Age’ was published in 2005. Waller believed Charles Dickens was aware of Robert Blincoe’s rare survival in the harsh conditions of Poor House and apprenticeship. Dickens was 36 when he started to write ‘Oliver Twist’ so it was quite feasible that he met and talked to Robert Blincoe about his experiences. Robert had been determined to survive and succeed despite his deprived childhood. Robert Blincoe was born around 1792 and had lived in St Pancras Poor House in London before being apprenticed to a mill in Nottingham. He later moved to Litton Mills, Derbyshire and in 1841 he is found in Ardwick, Manchester dealing in cotton. By 1851 he was in Deansgate and was a cotton waste dealer He later moved to Sutton. He did not leave a will. Robert Blincoe’s son Robert became Vicar at Swettenham. If this story is true then surely Robert Blincoe Snr should have some local recognition. If you have any further information relating to this story, please contact Dennis Whyte at Macclesfield@fhsc.org.uk - and thank you to the local branch of the Family History Society of Cheshire for this interesting historical piece for us to ponder over!

Inventions Matches Thanks to the humble matchstick, we aren’t lighting our birthday cake candles, bonfires and gas stoves by striking sparks off a flint with a piece of steel. As early as A.D. 577 in China, small sticks of pinewood impregnated with sulphur were used to produce instant flame. In Europe, it wasn’t until 1669 that the alchemist Hennig Brandt discovered the flammable nature of phosphorous. In 1680 an Irish physicist, Robert Boyle (of Boyle’s Law fame) coated a small piece of paper with phosphorous and coated a small piece of wood with sulphur to produce a flame however he didn’t develop his idea into a useable match. In 1827, John Walker, an English chemist and apothecary coated the end of a stick with certain chemicals and let it dry, starting a fire by drawing the stick across
rough surfaces. His yard-long sticks were cumbersome however, and he never patented it. A version of Walker’s match was eventually patented by a Samuel Jones, however they also had problems; an initial violent reaction, an unsteady flame and unpleasant smell. In 1830 a French chemist, Charles Sauria, substituted white phosphorous for the antimony in Walker’s mixture. White phosphorous is poisonous and the new matches made people sick with an ailment dubbed “phossy jaw”. In 1855, Swede Johan Lundstrom used red phosphorous instead of white and for many decades Sweden held a worldwide monopoly in the manufacture of safety matches. A Philadelphia lawyer named Joshua Pusey invented the matchbook in 1889 developing small paper matches bound into a pocket sized book. His idea was used by the Mendelssohn Opera Company to advertise their New York opening and suddenly paper matchbooks were everywhere, advertising everything.
