Dear Readers! Well, the Beast from the East has certainly made a mockery of my “Whiff of Spring”, hasn’t it!? And as I write, it is still snowing!! So I am just going to say that we have Gawsworth Hall on Page 4 talking about their summer garden theatre events and a chance to win a family ticket to the Macclesfield Festival on Page 40 - so maybe I should just skip all mention of Spring and fast forward to Summer! Although I do like Spring … A selection of new advertisers in this issue. We have things for the young - indeed the not yet born (see Page 9) - right through to the more senior members of our community on Page 13. Anyone fancy themselves as a budding Michaelangelo? See Page 7. Interesting editorial, as usual, including another walk from Graham Wilson, physio advice for people who slump at their desk on a regular basis (who me?) and some interesting thoughts from Tracy Mills on Page 20. We are pleased to welcome Marc Jackson from Marc Makes Comics who will be bringing us the exploits of Ro-bert each issue … you will find the little chap on Page 33 this issue so we hope you enjoy them!! Finally, one of our long term advertisers, Paul Truswell of Freedom Computers is going on a little walk in aid of Fibromyalgia UK. When I say little, I mean from Dover to Cape Wrath … so read about it on Page 40 and please support him if you can. New website nearly ready … looking good, so watch this space!!

Covered Garden Theatre announces Summer 2018 acts Gawsworth Hall is a family-run historic house and theatre that has been staging summer productions every year since 1969. This June, July and August, acts include Russell Watson, Richard Thompson, Leo Sayer, Michael Portillo, Jasper Carrott, The Illegal Eagles, Eddi Reader, ELO Again and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. As always, the audience are encouraged to picnic in front of the lake, or on the Camomile Lawn (with entry allowed from 2pm) before taking their seats in the covered auditorium for the evening performances. Few settings are as pretty, or atmospheric, as the Tudor manor house’s rose garden stage; and it has frequently been said, that to see Cheshire, you must see Gawsworth! This year the series of plays, concerts, comedy and opera runs from 29th June to 12th August. All tickets include free parking, and free entry to the Hall grounds.

It’s that time of year ‌.
Hot Cross Buns Preparation time: 40 mins Cooking time: 20 - 25 mins
Makes 12 buns
Ingredients Zest and juice 1 large orange Sunflower oil for greasing For the dough and crosses 225ml semi-skimmed milk 50g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 1 large egg 450g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting 2 tsp fast-action yeast 50g golden caster sugar For the flavouring, crosses and glaze 200g raisins 1 tsp ground cinnamon 4 tbsp golden caster sugar 100g plain flour
Method To make the dough: Heat the milk in a pan until hot but not boiling. Remove from the heat. Add the butter stir until melted. When the liquid has cooled to tepid, beat in the egg and half the orange zest.
12
Mix the strong flour, yeast, 1/2-1 tsp salt (depending on taste) and the sugar in a large bowl. Pour in the liquid and stir to make a soft dough. Knead the dough for 5-10 mins on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. (you can use a mixer with a dough attachment if you have one). Oil a large bowl and place the kneaded dough inside it, then cover with oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place for about 1 hr or until the dough has doubled in size. Place the raisins and half the orange juice in a small pan and simmer gently for a few minutes. Allow to cool completely. Mix the cinnamon with 2 tbsp sugar and the remaining zest. Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and press it out to a large rectangle, a little bigger than A4 paper size. Scatter it evenly with the drained raisins, and cinnamon-sugar mix. Roll the dough around the filling, then knead it well for a few mins until the fruit and spices are evenly spread.
Grease and line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a bun making the top as smooth as possible. Place the buns, smooth-side up, on the baking sheet, leaving room for rising. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place for 30-45 mins or until the dough has risen and doesn’t spring back quickly when prodded gently. Meanwhile preheat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Make the paste for the crosses by gradually stirring 6-7 tbsp water into the plain flour to make a smooth, thick paste, then put in an icing bag or small plastic food bag then snip off the corner to about 5mm. Pipe the crosses, then bake for 20-25 mins until the buns are risen and dark golden brown. Mix the remaining orange juice with the remaining sugar and let it dissolve. Brush the syrup over the buns while they are still hot, then leave to cool. Eat on the day of baking or serve toasted the next day.

Five things to do if you sit down all day by Simon Hogan & Ross Mitchell
Do you sit down all day for a living? Well you are not alone. Modern day technology has led to a rise of the machines and the sitting down of humans. But it’s not quite Terminator time yet. Working behind a computer or using smartphones and tablets can lead to sitting related problems. Now some would lead you to believe that sitting is bad for you. Well it isn’t, however not moving is! Our top tips are these: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Move often - wriggle lots. Our bodies love movement! Change your posture, slump for a bit, sit up tall for a bit. When you are not at work, exercise! Walk more Change your setup - we do not stoop to conquer!
Move often Believe it or not sitting time is the main factor instead of how you sit. So basically wriggle lots and change position. Our bodies love movement! Change your posture Due to gravity, arm position and human nature, when we sit we generally end up in a slump, which is fine. However if you sit slumped 100% of the time, and do it day in day out, it can lead to the muscles
down your back getting ‘long’ and they can get fed up and become painful. See point 1! Exercise A good analogy is if you stretch one finger back a bit you’ll feel it pull a bit and it should feel fine, But if you held it there for more than a few minutes, the soft tissues would ‘give’ a bit and if you kept repeating it for hours on end it may become painful. This is just how pain can begin if you have sitting related pain. The muscles can get deconditioned - a fancy word for out of shape. So when you’re not at work, do any exercise to keep fit and strong, and don’t forget the back muscles! Walk If you do not feel motivated to walk more after watching Dr Mike Evans’ Youtube clip titled 23 and a half hours, then nothing will get you moving! The benefits of walking just 30 minutes a day are so amazing and wide ranging that you would be mad not to walk more. Check it out. Change your setup There are some general rules here. Sit supported so you are not hanging away from your chair. Have your chair fairly close to the desk so your keyboard and mouse isn’t too far away and you won’t have to constantly reach forward for them. Have the monitor as high as your face - imagine it’s a person that you are talking to of the same height. If you suffer from sitting related pain and want some advice feel free to give us a call.

Local People
…. talks health
In this issue, we welcome back local professional holistic therapist Tracy Mills BSc (Hons, Genetics) MAR, MFHT, ARR, PRM, BFRP, who writes about matters related to health and wellbeing which may be of interest to readers of LPM .
Spring Fever, Social Jet lag and Serotonin ! Holistic healthcare works on the principle that everything is connected and nothing is separate and works with the whole person and their interaction with the environment as unique, taking into account the mind-body connection.
For some, the body can become quite confused for a few weeks, as the two hormones balance. Symptoms that may be experienced as the body catches up, may include headaches, sleepiness, tiredness, joint pain, irritability and distraction. This phenomenon has been called “Spring Fever”.
It is preventative and encourages balance and living in harmony with the environment, to promote and maintain health. Symptoms are seen as helpful, enabling us to tune into and respond to their signals. There is no better way to illustrate how connected we are to our environment, than how our hormones respond to the changes of the seasons as we transition from Winter to Spring. As we enter Spring and the days are getting longer, the body responds by producing less Melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone that we produce more of during the Winter months when the days are shorter, to tell the cells in our body when it is night-time and to help us sleep better and longer. It may take several weeks for the Melatonin levels to drop during the transition to spring. At the same time Serotonin (also known as the happiness hormone) starts to rise, with the opposite effect of Melatonin and brings about increased energy and vitality. For those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) with lows or depression during winter, Spring can be a turning point and bring about a lift in mood.
Chronobiology is the biology of time and our biological (circadian) rhythms in relation to the cycles in nature. There are 4 rhythms on Earth: The Tides Daylight Lunar Annual
12.5 hour cycle 24 hour cycle 28 day cycle 365.25 day cycle
Our modern lifestyles lead us to become quite disconnected and insulated from these natural cycles, causing us to override our body’s own natural rhythms, which can lead to biological imbalances and “social jetlag”. This can cause our bodies to feel confused and stressed.
Social Jetlag is the difference between what our internal body wants us to do and what the social culture wants us to do. For example, in the Winter, 85% of the western adult population set their alarm clock to get up when it is dark, which can be quite unnatural for the rhythm of our body and can interfere The fastest rate of change in daylight hours with our metabolism and hormones. Also, occurs around the equinox, which this year is using computer screens late at night, can lead on March 20th. the body to believe it is still daytime, which affects sleep patterns and consequently our overall health. 20 To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551
We are uniquely individual in our response to daylight and night-time cycles, our so called chronotype. This is known to be due to our genetics. Just as there are extremely tall and short people there are also extremes of chronotypes with the majority in the middle.
Some of us are naturally night owls and others early birds and it is best to honour our inherent natural rhythm. Living in dissonance with this leads to greater risk of health problems. This also changes with age, with 1 year olds and 80 year olds being quite similar in sleep requirements. Teenagers to 25 year olds are much later in their sleeping and waking hours rather than this being due to laziness. We require clear contrast between daylight and darkness to help regulate our circadian rhythm, to allow for better sleep and enable us to wake more naturally and refreshed for a productive day. It is not possible to receive enough lux (light intensity) from indoor lighting during the day, to provide this contrast. We can instead ensure that we see as much natural daylight during the day and as early in the morning as possible and remove the blue spectrum light after sun-set.
f.lux, which enables dynamic lighting on your computer, and removes the white-blue parts of spectrum out of the screen at night Holistic therapies support, empower and enable the individual to tune into the sometimes subtle signals of their body’s natural wisdom, in relation to their environment and understand how they may better support themselves. Reflexology works in this way and is proven to improve sleep patterns and mood. It is thought to do this by bringing the hormones and nerves (neuro-endocrine system) into natural balance, thus improving overall health. There is also a specific Reproflexology™ protocol used by specially trained therapists, to improve hormone balancing for fertility, for couples trying to conceive naturally. Success rates are reported to be 68%. The treatment includes temperature charting to tune into and follow the natural rhythm of the menstrual cycle, enabling assessment of the hormone balance during the cycle to adjust treatment to support pregnancy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Liver and Gall Bladder are the organs associated with Spring, so it is important to support these too. A simple way to do this can be with Apple Cider Vineger preferably organic from the mother tincture, taking 1-2tsp in a glass of water an hour before food. Cheers ! Internal Time: Chronotypes, Social Jet Lag, and Why You're So Tired. Prof. Till Roenneberg ISBN-0: 0674975391 https://justgetflux.com free software
It is a good idea, to adjust the screen brightness settings in your computer system preferences to warmer colours in the evening and there is free software called

It’s that time of year when we get the urge to Spring Clean …..
Declutter your Life By Tracey Anderson
If you can’t lay your hands on items you need because they’re buried under piles of junk; if you’re constantly moving items from one pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter-victim! Californian blogger Dave Bruno wrote The 100 Thing Challenge. He set himself a year-long experimental task of reducing his belongings to 100 items. Although it started as a challenge he actually chose to keep living by his new rules afterwards, saying he prefers the simplicity. It would be tough for most of us to emulate Bruno exactly, but he has a point. Most of us probably put far too much time, effort and money into acquiring, keeping and storing possessions, and sometimes it’s good to let go. If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. If you feel you need help, there are experts in de-cluttering who will guide you through the process of letting go. De-cluttering Tips Deal with one room at a time the task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished. Choose a nice day - Take the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the 22
clutter will make it back inside. Sort everything into three piles - Label them DUMP, DONATE and KEEP. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it. Deal with the dump and donate piles - Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone. Sort and label - Place the remaining items in clearly labelled boxes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues. Replace everything that remains - The maxim ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. Keep small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes. When you’re done instigate a ‘one thing in: one thing out’ rule. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else must go. Finally, once a week, take two bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items. Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life.

Advertiser Focus ……
This month we talked in a bit more depth with one of our regular advertisers, Roland Horvath of Akiki Interiors. Roland first came over to this country from Hungary in 2010, having studied upholstery at college there, graduating in 2003, and then working within the trade in Hungary. At first he found work in a variety of non-upholstery related jobs, sometimes three at a time, to learn English and simply support his family. In time though he secured a regular job with a small and well established local upholstery company where he not only revived the skills he had brought with him, but also learnt alternative methods to achieve the same results, as the British methods of upholstery can be different in a number of ways from those used in Hungary and neighbouring countries. So after 3 years honing his skills, learning how the business ticks in the UK and putting down roots in Macclesfield, he took the brave decision to branch out and set up in business for himself and now has his own workshop, Akiki Interiors, in Venture House on Cross Street. For Roland, upholstery is not just a job but a vocation. He started in this country from nothing but is now building up a pool of regular customers, mainly through word of mouth (and Local People, of course!), based on customer satisfaction with the quality of his work which is always of the highest level and conforming to British standards. He knows that every piece of furniture that comes through his door has a history and a value to his customer - so he treats that piece of furniture with the utmost respect and care. He turns his hand to any type of upholstery project but has a particular knowledge of the restoration of antique upholstered furniture. He told us that the number of people who are truly knowledgeable and skilled in the trade is ever diminishing - so take your treasured piece along and let him have a look. More information can be found on Roland’s website.

Veteran long-distance walker to face his toughest challenge yet supporting Fibromylagia Action UK Freedom Computer Services partner Paul Truswell of Macclesfield will soon be starting a 900-mile solo walk south to north across Great Britain. Depending when you read this, he may already be en route… Paul is no str anger to longdistance walking, having walked east to west across England 560 miles from Lowestoft to Land's End in 2016, in support of 1st Hurdsfield Scouts; 300 miles from Lindisfarne to Iona in 2014, supporting Cre8 Macclesfield; and many more in previous years. This year Paul is taking on the challenge of walking solo from the English Channel at Dover to Cape Wrath, the far northwest corner of the island of Great Britain, supporting national charity Fibromyalgia Action UK. The route is his hardest to date and will take him some 50 days to complete, plus a few rest days, averaging 18 miles per day walked. Paul will be camping where other accommodation is not available; he will commence the walk, entitled ‘TrussyTrek 2018 - Magnetic North!’, on Sunday 1st April, and expects to complete the journey on May 25. More information about Paul’s walk can be found at www.truswell.org where links to his JustGiving donations page and social media can be found.

How eggstra-ordinary! By Roberta Snow It’s ironic that most of the traditions associated with the principle religious feast of the Christian year have no basis in Christianity at all. The word ‘Easter’ comes from an AngloSaxon fertility goddess called Eostre, who was associated with spring and new beginnings. Both Easter and Passover centre around re-birth, and bond neatly with the Anglo-Saxon festival of ‘Eostre-monath’ – Eostre’s month. Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, are linked to the Jewish festival of Passover. Originally they were made from unleavened bread, an important Passover food. Nowadays they are more palatably leavened and marked with a cross to serve as a reminder of the crucifixion. As an aside you may notice they are more expensive this year due to a global shortage of raisins and sultanas!
42
The tradition of eating chocolate eggs stems from Eostre, when eggs were given as gifts to celebrate the end of winter and as a symbol of new life and fertility. Chocolate was an ingenious German addition much later. The Easter bunny seems to have been a German invention too, though it stems from Eostre again. The original association was the hare but rabbits look similar so they kind of hijacked the show. German children made nests in the garden and good children were left coloured hardboiled eggs over night as a reward. Egg rolling on Easter Monday is an eccentric British custom. As a child I was told the egg represented the rolling away of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb, but research shows that the custom predates the arrival of Christianity here. It’s great fun though, whatever the history behind it.

Local History
by John Langdill of Macclesfield Historical Society (see our Community Noticeboard on Page 56 for details of their regular monthly meeting) and volunteer at Macclesfield Museum Last time we left the brothers, Charles (2) born 1775, Richard born 1779 and Samuel born 1782 following the death of their father, Charles (1) in 1798. After this the family firm, Charles Wood and Co., continued operations from Norfolk Street, Manchester, no doubt managed at first by Charles (2) who continued to live next door. We don't hear anything definite about Richard until 1803 when he was resident in Manchester and had probably also been working in the family firm It seems that Samuel moved out since a manufacturer called Samuel Wood is recorded as living in Ardwick in 1800 and 1802. In 1804 both Richard and Samuel are recorded as merchants living in Norfolk Street so if Samuel had left the family operation for a time he had returned, but by 1804 all three brothers were married and Charles (2) had probably moved to Macclesfield In fact Charles and Samuel had made surprisingly advantageous matches. Charles was married to Mary Ann Ryle in 1800 and Samuel married Sarah Ryle in 1803. Mary Ann was born in 1777 and Sarah in 1782 and both were daughters of John Ryle, a wealthy Macclesfield silk thrower and cotton spinner. Charles, as was usual, seems to have taken the lead and the puzzle is how he had come to know the Ryle family. All three brothers had been born in Manchester and their father had been born in Didsbury where their grandfather had lived from the age of 18, so the two families had not been living near each other. Perhaps Charles (1) or Charles (2) had formed a business connection with John Ryle. Travel between Manchester and Macclesfield would have taken something like half a day each way but Charles (2) in particular seems to have established a presence in Macclesfield in the late 1790s. John Ryle's father had owned a small textile business, probably a dye works, in the n e i g h b o u r h o o d o f P a r k Green. John continued this when his father
56
died, I think in the 1770s, and formed a partnership with Michael Daintry, a lawyer who had been born in Leek in 1732 and was a financial expert. I think they must have owned or operated a number of mills but the most prominent was the mill on Park Green which burned down a few years ago. The mill had a date of 1785 on the part of the building on Park Green, which seems to have been added to the original mill. This was the building now standing empty along Mill Lane which contained the water wheel. The date stone of 1811 on this building is a later insertion and it was probably originally built around 1780. It was four stories high but was reduced in size following a fire some decades ago. Michael Daintry and John Ryle both became extremely wealthy. When John Ryle died in 1808 he apparently left money and property worth over ÂŁ250,000, which was an incredible fortune at that time. Richard also married in 1803 and his bride was Helen Nicholson, who was born in 1780 and was a grand-daughter of Charles Roe, who established the earliest silk mill in Macclesfield. The family had been prosperous but Helen's branch experienced financial difficulties. Helen's parents had moved to Berkshire but had separated before her father died in 1792 and her mother had moved back to Macclesfield with her daughters. When Mrs. Nicholson died in 1801 she was being given financial support by a wealthy relative. However Helen and her sisters would have been part of the same social circle as the Ryles and Daintrys.
Some of the above information comes from Ron Thorne, the Silk Museum librarian.

Macclesfield Male Voice Choir A busy year ahead!
This well established local choir is looking forward to a truly exciting year in 2018. Our St Patricks Day concert in March was our first concert in Macclesfield under the direction of our newly appointed Musical Director Robert Owens. Robert is in his early twenties and so reduces the average age of the choir a little! Our second concert in the Borough is arguably our most important of the year – our Annual Gala Concert. This is scheduled to take place on Saturday 28th April at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church on Park Green in Macclesfield. We will have a number of VIP guests and an excellent guest soloist so it promises to be a very entertaining evening. The tickets will be made available from choir members, the Tourist Information Centres and of course on line through our website – macclesfieldmvc.org.uk (and go to the ‘Contact us’ tab.) All of the above is exciting enough in its own right however imagine the growing anticipation in the choir in response to the news that we will be competing in the most prestigious choral contest in the world on Saturday 7th July in Llangollen! The Eisteddfod is a magnet for choirs from all over the world and this year Macclesfield will be represented. Here’s hoping!
New members always welcome.

Make sure your lightbulb moment in 2018 is to advertise with Local People!! So, why advertise in Local People Macclesfield? Our own team delivers every issue (10 of these each year!) DIRECTLY THROUGH the doors of nearly 24,000 homes and businesses, covering most of Macclesfield, Tytherington and the surrounding villages of Prestbury, Rainow, Sutton, Langley, Gawsworth and Henbury! We believe this to be the largest but most concentrated distribution of any other medium of its kind in the area and probably the best value! Additional copies are left at collection points in Chelford village plus Macclesfield library, Visitor Information Centre and train station. We have also incorporated our other magazine, Compass Wilmslow, into Local People on an interim basis and so are currently leaving even more copies at collection points only in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Bollington bi-monthly at no extra charge! We don’t do hard sell, we’re very easy to deal with, we will never, ever classify people according to letters of the alphabet, we work with you to get the best for your business, we can do simple artwork for you (only making a modest charge for single issue ads, multi issue bookings are generally free!) we know the area well, we’ve been doing this for over 12 years now with well over 100 issues under our belts, there is a good value price to suit every business, what you see is what you get - and most importantly, it works!! Our readers and advertisers tell us this and a large percentage of our advertisers are repeat bookings … so give us a ring! Phew!
