Publishing a magazine is hard work. As the team of talented executives and creatives at LOCALpittsburgh welcome me with open arms, I can’t help but to be pretty excited about the stories we’ve worked on for this issue. Ringing in the scary, is our Fright Night article, a little piece about haunted attractions and real hauntings in the surrounding area. For this project, I actually interviewed a ghost hunter. It was weird and exciting and weird all in the same hand. Did I mention it was weird? Because it was. Our other stories include the always popular Bicycle Heaven, the museum that sleeveless shirts made, a feature on great gastropubs that are flying under the radar, and how to navigate all of the new ways to get transportation around the city.

Quaker Church: Perryopolis, PA

Located in a cemetery on Quaker Road, the church has been a place for satanic rituals, and a hotbed for paranormal activity. The area has since been fenced off from the general public, and is patrolled by local police, but is still an active ghost area.

A spooky guide for your Halloween adventures. For a large portion of us (not me, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty much a 5-year-old when it comes to horror), Halloween brings out our morbid curiosity of zombies, haunted houses, and things that make us feel weird inside. So, if you want to have the living daylights scared out of you, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our list of the top 5 most haunted places in the area, along with the top 5 scare attractions. Happy haunting.

Frick Mansion (Clayton House): Point Breeze, PA

In 1883, American Industrialist, Henry Clay Frick took up residence at The Clayton House with his wife and children. The family moved to New York, but his daughter, Helen Clay Frick, eventually returned to her favorite home, where she died in 1984. Many believe the ghost of Helen Clay Frick watches over her childhood home. Guards have reported footsteps on the third floor of the house, as well as imprints on beds in the museum.

Carnegie Library: Connellsville, PA

Purchased in 1899, the library was built on Connell Graveyard. Although the bodies were moved, the spirits apparently liked hanging there. Heavy activity is documented to this day, and there are reportedly two young boys that read books in the basement.

1201 Bruce Hall (University of Pittsburgh): Oakland, PA

In the 1920’s, the owner’s mistress or wife committed suicide in the suite. Over the years, students and staff have reported footsteps in the stairwells, hearing a woman’s voice, one instance where the fireplace was reignited, and there were several instances with unfolded banquet table napkins.

The Mon Valley: Charleroi, Elizabeth, Donara, Monessen

According to Shawn Kelly, a paranormal investigator for the past 20 years and the founder of the Pittsburgh Paranormal Society, The Mon Valley is the most haunted place in Pittsburgh, citing an extreme amount of activity.

Shawn Kelly discovered he could see ghosts after a near death experience in the 80’s.

“I didn’t see the light when I died, I saw darkness. It smelled really bad, and it was grey.” He’s been seeing and talking to ghosts for over 20 years. He’s been kicked, punched, bitten, and scratched by ghosts. He’s also danced with a ghost, with a roomful of people watching on.

US government, which viewed the instability of the region as a threat to national power.

During the late 18th century, immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, and Germany settled in Western Pennsylvania, bringing with them the craft of whiskey and beer distillation. Almost immediately immigrants set up stills for not only their own consumption, but for sale to support their newfound lifestyle. Unfortunately for the frontiersman, whiskey soon became a controversial political topic, especially for socio-economic purposes. After advice from Secretary of State Alexander Hamilton, President George Washington introduced an excise tax on domestic and imported liquor in 1791 to assist in paying off debts from the Revolutionary War. This proved to be extremely unpopular to frontier distillers who viewed this as a direct attack on their personal lifestyles derived from greed from the government. Western Pennsylvania was an especially hostile environment for tax collectors; according to historian Gerald Carson, a mob of 5,000 men marched on Pittsburgh threatening 12

to burn the city. They were met by city officials who dissuaded the mob by promising to banish known tax collectors and by bribing them with, what else, whiskey. Early resistance in Western Pennsylvania was limited in four counties: Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland. Over the course of the rebellion, frontiersman used violent and intimidating methods to prevent tax collectors from doing their job, despite pleas from local politicians to use nonviolent means. From 1791-1793, Pittsburgh officials held local meetings culminating in two major conventions; one in 1791 led by moderate politicians, and one in 1792 which proved to be far more radical due to the growing displeasure of the distillers. The second convention sparked major concern from the

Violence peaked in 1794, when approximately 500 men attacked the fortified home of tax inspector General John Neville, in what it now known as the Battle of Bower Hill. The outcome of the battle further incensed the rebels, who lost their leader, Major John McFarlane, in the skirmish. Following this event, 7,000 rebels gathered at Braddockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Field in Allegheny County to continue the protest and destroy the property of those who opposed them. Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response sent 13,000 militiamen to the region to quell the uprising and the violence, thus ending the organized rebellion. Throughout this tumultuous time, Pittsburgh remained relatively untouched due to the efforts of anti-violence leaders such as Hugh Brackenridge, who played a large role in the 1791 convention. After Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s suppression of the rebellion, leaders of the insurrection were arrested and taken to Philadelphia for trial; of which 24 men were indicted with high treason. Only two men were convicted of crimes. Of those was Philip Wigle, for whom the Pittsburgh distillery takes its name. As a whole, the Whiskey Rebellion proved to be a major victory for the US government, but also opened the door to more localized (and secretive) Western PA stills, despite the formal tax.

LA DORITA: A KITCHEN SHARE WITH SOME SWAG

In 2009 Josephine Oria started La Dorita to celebrate and sell her grandmother’s recipe for Dulce de Leche. Conceived in Argentina, Dulce de Leche is a sweet milk spread that is popular in many Latin countries. Made in small batches with top-quality locally sourced ingredients, La Dorita’s sweet treat has caught on in Pittsburgh, and they now also feature a Dulce de Leche liqueur, which can be found at PA Wine & Spirits stores.

More recently, Josephine has ventured into the kitchen share business. She and her husband, Gaston, spent many months and $30,000 to turn the kitchen in their O’Hara Township house into a commercial kitchen. Upon the birth of their fifth child they realized that there was just not enough space in the home for the business and their family. They searched for a commercial kitchen to rent but were unable to find one in the Pittsburgh area. In 2012, they found the perfect space at the site of the former Elks Lodge in Sharpsburg. They launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and raised $50,000 to help with renovations. The 6,000-square-ft building offers a fully licensed commercial kitchen that is equipped and designed for small food businesses. It also features a bar and dance floor that can be rented out for events and parties.

Josephine and Gaston not only provide a workspace, they offer guidance and advice on how to build relationships with local food producers and navigate the process of retail distribution. They currently have eight tenants who use the space for production, cooking classes, events and services such as wedding tastings. The shared kitchen space is a concept that builds both small business and community. Food entrepreneurs are able to rent it for small blocks of time without having to provide large amounts of capital up front. One of the biggest obstacles to starting a successful artisanal food business or catering company is lack of funds. “It’s very difficult to procure product as a small startup business because the volume isn’t there. A model like ours allows businesses to join together and order product that can be delivered to the space in Sharpsburg,” says Josephine, “The food business is one of the best industries for lower-income people to get into. Our model creates a community of like-minded businesses sharing an open environment, and is a great place for someone to get their foot in the door and make a living for themselves and their families.” La Dorita’s commercial kitchen space is available weekdays in five-hour blocks, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Conquering fear is at the core of Pittsburgh’s first annual Fearless Warrior Yoga Conference, which is being held at Hotel Monaco this October. The day’s itinerary includes talks and breakout sessions featuring local leaders, along with yoga classes, meditation, and a chance to experience the fearlessness within the Pittsburgh community. Dr. Lanie Francis has been chosen as the keynote speaker of this first Fearless Warrior Yoga Conference. Dr. Francis is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, and sits at the helm of the Integrative Oncology Institute at UPMC’s Cancer Center. This Integrative Oncology program, which she has developed with a team of selected service providers that range anywhere from the field of massage therapy to nutritional counseling, is shifting the paradigm of healing in Pittsburgh. The gritty sense of neighborhood pride resonates in what some may call a “dive bar.” Here at LOCALpittsburgh, we’re kind of fancy, so we’ll call them Gastropubs. Steel workers, Monday morning quarterbacks, NFL analysts, and overall sports geniuses often debating, well, everything, frequent these hometown havens. Often forgotten by the average Joe, your local gastropub offers food, fun, and lively characters.

During the course of your busy day, you probably zip past them without a clue of all the culinary fun that’s awaiting your taste buds. The old neighborhood spot that has the absolute best hamburger, sandwich, or that weird guy that always smells like Old Spice and chicken wings. For the life of you, you can’t figure how they fit a dump truck full of goodness onto your plate for only a few dollars. The plates aren’t designed to win an award for best presentation of a leaf on top of another leaf, they’re made to fill you up so you can get back to sitting in construction traffic like the rest of normal Pittsburgh society. It feels like you’re getting away with something. Well, if this is wrong, you don’t wanna be right. And while we can’t disclose the mysteries of the dollar-to-portion formula, we can direct you to a few of our favorite spots.

Kellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s started in the 40s and quickly became the place to see and be seen. The club hosted local celebrities and nationally known musicians when they traveled to Pittsburgh. Gene Kelly frequented the bar and once Dizzy Gillespie played an impromptu late night set after another gig. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rumored that local prize fighter and pride of the burgh, Billy Conn, once knocked out a patron that got fresh with his date.

This is the uber neighborhood bar that “locals” know about. It was opened shortly after Prohibition ended. It has one of the last hand cranked dumb waiters in Pittsburgh. While I was there I noticed a guy reading over baseball box scores and making notes, I found this a flashback to a time long ago. There were several young (compared to me) people eating and sketching in art books. Jan, the day bartender has been there for over 37 years.

The Modern Cafe has been around since Prohibition and has always been a local watering hole located in the heart of the Allegheny West area of the North Side. In 1933 it was “modern” and since a devastating fire New Year’s Eve 2009, it has become “modern” once again. It now features 140 different beers with 12 on tap, award winning sandwiches, homemade soups everyday and some unique appetizers. The Modern Cafe has one of the best happy hours around featuring 1/2 off drafts, $1.00 of glasses of wine and $2.00 off munchies. Do you enjoy the impact social media has in the food industry today? 50/50 on social media influence, on the positive side the speed in which to get information out to the masses is exceptional and you CAN get constructive criticism. On the other hand, it’s rough because it can be way too accessible for people who don’t take the time to truly see or look at what’s going on. 30

PAD THAI Any local chefs you really admire? To be honest, I’m horrible with names... And I’ve kinda been living in a bubble until recently. I guess I will usually go by the restaurant name more so than the chef’s names. So, my response is usually like, “Oh, the chef at Täkō?” Next food trend? I think we are in the beginning stages of our next food trend here in Pittsburgh. I personally feel that it’s going in the direction of a super laid back casual atmosphere with white table cloth quality food with a moderate price point. Best chef secret you can share with home cooks? Don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid of handling a knife, or you’ll be sure to get cut; don’t be afraid of hot oil in a pan or you’ll be sure to get burned; don’t be afraid to try new things with food or you’ll be sure not experience the thrill of creating. Favorite ingredient? Favorite ingredient has to be any type of chili peppers. Love to spice it up A place you eat during your day off? Lately I’ve been just traveling around the city exploring what the chefs have to offer so I’ve been all over the board as to which restaurants I go to. That’s what makes life a little more worthwhile…Exploring.

1 tsp Chopped shallots 1 tsp Chopped garlic 1 tsp Chopped scallions 1/2 tsp Minced Thai bird chilies ( optional) 5oz cooked rice noodles 3oz chicken sliced Bok choy 1 egg Minced peanuts for garnish Cilantro for garnish Pad Thai sauce: 1/4 c minced garlic 1 c tamarind 4 pods palm sugar 2 TBS paprika 1 TBS cayenne 1 1/2 c fish sauce 1/2 c peanut sauce In a blender combine all ingredients until smooth, set aside Add 1 oz of oil to hot wok, add chicken and sauté until chicken is cook. Set aside. Add another 1 oz of oil to wok, add egg and let cook thru while stirring every few seconds. Quickly add garlic, scallions, shallots, and chillies. Sauté for 2 seconds, quickly add bok choy, chicken, and noodles. Toss for 5 to 7 seconds add 2 oz of pad Thai sauce. Toss for another 5 to 7 seconds until thoroughly heated. Place in serving dish and garnish with peanuts and cilantro

Stephanie Armbruster was born in Cleveland, OH, in 1983. She moved to Pittsburgh in 2001 to attend Carnegie Mellon University, where she received a BFA in 2006. Stephanie is represented locally by Art Space 616. Her work has been exhibited at 709 Penn Gallery, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, James Gallery, the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Mattress Factory Museum of Art, and others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I approach my work as a series of edits to an ongoing monologue in which the boundaries between memory, fiction and dreams are permeable. The titles of my works are often personally significant. Some recount specific events and locations, while others reference songs or elements of dreams. Presented together as a collection, my paintings recall pivotal moments of transition through the abstraction of symbols and layered references to time and place.â&#x20AC;?

What Makes Art Relevant? I consider art to be a lens with which to view culture. In that way, art will always be relevant. Art adds an additional layer to the amalgamation that is History, beyond written record or verbal account. That the relevance of art seems to be currently in question tells me more about the present zeitgeist rather than art itself.

Atticus Adams is a sculptor whose work embodies the transformative power of art to create beauty, meaning, and emotional impact from industrial materials. Using aluminum, bronze, copper, and stainless steel mesh—generally found in screen doors/windows and filters—he creates abstract pieces and installations inspired by memories, which sometimes resemble flowers, clouds, and other natural phenomena. Hope is at the core of his art, and may be emblematic of recycling per se. “Making something beautiful out of something mundane or even ugly is really what I’m trying to do with my art,” he says. “When it’s successful, I think it shows how bleakness or blight can be replaced by (or subsumed into) its opposite. To me that’s hope, as an active, deliberate process, as well as an emotional embrace of possibility—and I think it’s reflected in the work.” Atticus grew up in West Virginia, steeped in traditional folk art. Several members of his family were self-taught artists, deeply involved in such crafts as wood carving and quilting. “Making tangible objects is definitely part of my family heriXtage,” he says. “I come from a tradition of using basic, easily available materials for creative outlets. His formal art training includes stints at Yale, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard’s School of Architecture.

RIDE SHARE Lyft & Uber If you’ve never used a rideshare service, now is the time to start. Rideshares are a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional car services in Pittsburgh. Both Uber and Lyft are operated entirely from the user’s smart phone. Both companies have apps that allow users to easily locate and request rides all over the city 24/7. An interactive GPS powered map shows patrons where cars are located and gives minute to minute updates on the car’s estimated arrival time. Between these two rideshare services, city coverage ranges from Bethel Park to Cranberry Township, making this a great option for those who take the bus or those who simply don’t want to put extra miles on their cars. PORT AUTHORITY Public Bus & Trolley Pittsburgh’s public bus system is, without a doubt, the most widely used form of transit in the city. Serving approximately 200,000 residents a day with 700 buses city wide and a fleet of 80 light rail vehicles, Port Authority has been an invaluable part of Pittsburgh since 1964. The city bus and trolley system, while not without its flaws, has been made more accessible through recent technological advances. The ConnectCard has enabled riders to purchase passes online, eliminating much of the panic associated with riding the bus. One tap of your ConnectCard can take you all over the city without the need for exact change or paper passes. New smartphone apps, like Transit Stop and BusPGH, have recently been developed to help riders more easily navigate the city bus system and receive real time info on bus arrivals through GPS tracking.

After a tremendously successful Kickstarter campaign, Kate Lasky and Tomasz Skowronski, the folks who have been running monthly Pierogi Night pop-ups, have announced plans to open their own brick-and-mortar spot. APTEKA will be located on Penn Avenue, between Lawrenceville and Bloomfield, and will feature a menu heavy with Central and Eastern European favorites (including

their famous pierogies). Look for it to officially open this fall. Legume’s chef and owner Trevett Hooper is also looking towards Eastern Europe for inspiration for his next restaurant venture, Dacha. Still in the early planning stages, Hooper hopes to fund the Russian-style restaurant with small fundraisers and dinners over the next two years. is a four piece, high intensity, metal band from Pittsburgh, PA. Formed in 2012, ENL draws inspiration from a wide variety of genres of hard rock and metal.

Influenced by the rock and post-hardcore scene of the early to mid 2000’s, Identity X is best described as a blend of aggression and beauty. With gain-laden guitar riffs frequently giving way to lush, delay-drenched ambiance, the listener’s emotions are stirred to a soundtrack that is anthemic, powerful, atmospheric and melancholic. Lyrically honest and technically proficient, octave leaping vocal lines move from powerful and inspiring to quiet and introspective while maintaining an infectious melody throughout.

Vocalist Zosia West has crafted a distinctly harsh, but melodic singing style that somehow remains catchy while holding nothing back. Drummer Mike Beaver’s unique polyrhythms and backbeats are the glue that holds the band together. On guitars, Jason “The Sledgehammer” Iampietro brings classical training and 14 years of shredding experience to the table. The newest member of the band, John “The Scalpel” Ploskina, provides bludgeoning bass riffs and thunderous low end. ENL has performed for America’s Got Talent, played for members of Korn, and devastated audiences in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland and New York, and they’re just getting started.

THE DARKHORSE RISES The greatest stadium you’ve never heard of. One day, I looked across the river, and a soccer stadium appeared. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a picturesque, open-air structure sat in Station Square. Perhaps one of the most beautiful architectural marvels in Pittsburgh, Highmark Stadium has certainly made its mark on the residents with a simplistic approach to enjoying sporting and entertainment events. Using the city as its landscape, Highmark Stadium holds 4,000, with expansion plans to house as many as 18,000. Now the home for Pittsburgh’s professional soccer team, The Riverhounds, people flock to the stadium nestled along the river to catch a glimpse of what the city has to offer.

Richard Nightingale, President for Highmark Stadium and The Riverhounds, has made sweeping changes in the dynamics of the stadium and team in order to promote growth and encourage residents to attend games.

We decided to pick her brain about fitness, gym life, and being awesome. This is what we came up with. Enjoy. What’s the best way to burn calories? When people express goals of weight loss to me, what they are really trying to do is burn fat. The best way to burn fat is to speed up your metabolism and build muscle. Your muscle is what actively burns calories and fat for you. The more you have, the more you’re burning just from simple daily activities. So the key to weight loss is to speed up your metabolism into fat burning mode and build muscle. Best way to work abs? If you use weight when core strengthening you could grow your abs outward. So, even when you finally shred fat your belly may still look likes it’s protruding. I suggest no weight with core strengthening and try to use standing movements when lifting weight. This will engage your core in a more practical and functional manner. Women lifting heavy weights will make them look like a man, right? Absolutely not! As a body builder I can tell you it takes years to get bigger, and it’s gradual, not overnight. There is so much science behind the nutrition of body building. If you are eating the way you are supposed to and lifting heavy, most likely you will shred fat, get stronger, build a booty, shape your legs, tone your arms and may even see the appearance of abdominal muscles.

Leg sessions are some of the highest calorie burnings sessions. I like to train mine every 4 days, it helps keep me lean. One thing everyone should do to live a healthier lifestyle? Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps digestion, your skin, organ function and muscle recovery. If you take your weight in pounds, then divide that number by two. The answer is the amount of water you should intake daily in ounces.

Pittsburgh. It’s not all about football, chipped ham, and sandwiches with fries on them. Sometimes, just sometimes, if you look beneath the epicenter of the city, you may uncover a hidden gem or two.

Nestled in the North Shore industrial park on Prebble Ave. sits Bicycle Heaven, a vintage bicycle museum, retail outlet, parts emporium, and collection of oddities from around the world. Bicycle Heaven is housed in a 10,000 square foot industrial warehouse that has been flooded with bikes from every era. Visitors can enjoy a nostalgic jaunt through the eclectic inferno as they peruse banana seats, tassels, mannequins, bobble heads, and other things that might make you feel a little weird inside. (Like Pee-Wee Herman’s Bike). There’s even a car sitting on the museum floor. But not just any car. The HMV Freeway is the world’s answer to gas guzzlers. The three-wheeled microcar which was manufactured in the 80’s, gets 100mpg and reaches a top speed of 70-mph. Although there were only 700 sold, the museum owns three. Other braggadocious rights come from the museum’s possession of the world’s largest collection of Schwinn Sting Rays. With 400+ bikes, valued at roughly $2,500 per bike, the museum’s collection is bursting at the seams.

Bicycle Heaven is also home to the largest collection of the “Bowden Space Lander”, an all fiberglass bike valued at 20k. The museum owns 11, last time we checked. Between the two collections, which only account for maybe 3 percent of the museum, that’s 1.2 million dollars in bicycles. So, whose insane idea was it to own one of the largest bicycle museums in the world? Craig Morrow, that’s who. The former golden gloves boxer turned bicycle collector and professional sleeveless shirt wearer, decided to take his passion for bikes and do something about it. Morrow used to fix bikes out of his garage and sell parts online, but as his collection grew, he needed a place to house his labor of love. Bicycle Heaven has been featured numerous times in the media, including the NY TIMES, and more recently, the museum was the staging ground for KNS Tha Engineer’s Rap Video, “Everybody Want It.” Morrow even made a cameo in the video, in where he’s gyrating in some sort of way. We’ll leave the dancing to the pros old sport, but the bikes, you’ve definitely got something special for the people of Pittsburgh. Pics don’t do it justice. Make sure you check out Bicycle Heaven, truly one of the hidden treasures in the city.
