As digital media’s footprint begins to loosen its grip, the print magazine has made a roaring comeback. Now, more than ever, people are putting down the phones and picking up magazines. They’re an escape from the norm, a carefully curated resource of entertaining and engaging content that we’ve come to value and appreciate. It’s not about the likes, it’s about quality. The vapid nature of the digital world has taxed our synapses, and now many of us seek an escape from the technology we hold so dear. We hope our inaugural issue incites a moment where the phones go silent. If only for a moment, progress we seek.

KELLY’S BAR & LOUNGE EAST LIBERTY 6

college | Issue 1

The quintessential staple of East Liberty, Kelly’s was founded in the 1940’s and was quite the spot, seeing a large number of celebrity clientele. Now, Kelly’s still offers an authentic throwback vibe and is known for great food that fills the tummy without breaking that fragile thing we call a debit card. Steak Cut Sweet Potato Fries and their grilled hamburger are legend.

URBAN TAP SOUTHSIDE

Located in the Southside, Urban Tap offers an open-air vibe with traditional American fare. Bison Burgers, Fries and Wings, it’s the perfect place for a night out with the crew. Also a favorite of Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steeler’s commander-in-chief.

THE YARD

MARKET SQUARE, SHADYSIDE, PPG PAINTS ARENA A Gastropub with a flair for the interesting, The Yard boasts three locations throughout the city, but more importantly, they specialize in loaded grilled-cheese sandwiches like Turk’d Up. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and cheddar. Magic.

SQUIRREL HILL CAFE DUH

One of the few restaurants that has a fully functional dumb waiter, Squirrel Hill Café opened its door soon after prohibition ended, circa 1930’s. The uber-local hang out has been frequented by all. While the food is great, and extremely inexpensive, you’ll have to fight your way through a few plumes of cigarette smoke, as it is one of the few places that allows smoking indoors.

FUEL AND FUDDLE OAKLAND

Fuel and Fuddle (loosely translated means food and drink) is a late night hangry session in the making. Thin crust gourmet pizza blasted in a wood-fired oven, massive desserts, and a full bar create the perfect storm for all who want a slightly more upscale bar experience. 8

BINGE FER OF TELEVISION HAS TO OF E AG EN LD GO E TH ST BE THE

As season 7 of Showtime’s hit series Shameless bares down on us like Frank Gallagher’s jaundiced existence, it’s the perfect time catch up with America’s favorite effed up family unit, the Gallaghers. As if the cast from Fuller House started taking meth fulltime, the Gallagher family combines absolute mayhem with good ol’ fashion insanity. Now streaming on Netflix are the first 6 seasons of the British reboot that follows the life and times of The Gallagher’s, a strong family unit that just can’t get out of their own way.

At the head of the circus is Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) Father of 6, an alcoholic narcissist with anti-social behavior and the blood of Satan running through his veins. A pure embodiment of entitlement, oblivious to responsibility, decency, or humility, he careens through life taking what he can, jostling anyone in his path, and destroying the hopes of all who come close to him. Venomous in spirit and malevolent in action, he fect William H. Macy is per knows no boundaries. Intelligent and crafty, k as eternal trainwrec his anti-establishment beliefs coupled by Frank Gallagher his raging alcoholism puts him in precarious positions by the minute, and sometimes can make him an affable personality, but it quickly dissipates. We want Frank to show a shred of decency, to crack through the veil of mediocrity, but he doesn’t. He’s belligerent in his destruction of mankind. A missile of despair, heading toward, well, everyone. Macy is masterful in his characterization of Gallagher. We love to hate him, and wish the worst for him. But don’t worry, no one hates Frank Gallagher more than Frank Gallagher does. Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) is the oldest Gallagher and is tasked with carrying the load her deadbeat libertarian father graced her with. Under the roof are her siblings Lip (Jeremey Allen White), Ian (Cameron Monaghan), Carl (Ethan Cutkosky), Debbie (Emma Kenney), and baby Liam. The controlled chaos that is Fiona’s life earns her major credits as she begs, borrows, and steals to keep a roof over her head and food on the table. Although oppressed by her situation, she takes it in stride, until she doesn’t, and then the wheels college | Issue 1

Likeable but flawed m) Fiona (Emmy Rossu is the glue of the Gallagher clan

fall off. Fiona is a master of the hustle, her nose is clean for the most part, other than her horrific choice in mating partners. Breaking the Guinness world record for daddy issues, she bounces around looking for something that makes sense with a male counterpart, but all it does is unravel her world more and more. We soon find out, being a screw up is simply a Gallagher specialty.

As the two juggernauts of the family fight for independence and relevance, there’s a cornucopia of sub plots bubbling beneath the surface that make Shameless a 10/10. The sheer magnificence of the anarchy is mystifying. Each story is intertwined and exhausting. And all we wonder is will someone make a good decision at some point in this damn family? For the most part, the answer is no…no they won’t. And that’s the tragic beauty of Shameless. The elegance in which they accept their despair is biblical. They simply don’t give up, and even when they do, they take everyone down with them. They’re the proverbial sinking ship, the car crash we cannot look away from. Shameless feeds our overtly voyeuristic nature and makes us feel like we have it a bit better than the Gallaghers do, even though we can all relate to them in some way. But before you click play, keep in mind that the producer unlocked the sex cheat code for the show, and there are loads of nude scenes and sexual situations. By the end of season 6, I was perfectly comfortable with seeing Emmy Rossum’s lady bits, just from sheer overexposure. I was tapped out, but wait! The inappropriateness doesn’t stop there. The show doesn’t shy away from completely desensitizing its audience, so if you like nakedness and sexytime in every imaginable scenario, the show will most likely give you at least one nightmare during your binge. Overall, Shameless is a pure symphony of chaos, and very easy to digest, even with the surly nature of the subject matter. Nothing is off-limits, and it will break every misconception you have about what’s appropriate for television. I highly recommend clicking play on your Netflix browser.

Defy

Logic

A Few Words With Blogger Heidi Balas www.thesteeltrap.net

If I could summarize my undergraduate experience in five words or less it would have to be: I failed Introduction to Logic. Looking back, I have no idea what graduation requirement that class would have fulfilled, but it certainly wasn’t my forte. Coincidentally, the most laughable memories from my four years at the University of Pittsburgh involved little to no logic. Did it make sense to eat a live goldfish at Sigma Chi’s Annual Goldfish Party in order to get a warm can of Natty Light? Did it make sense to crawl out of the window and up onto our totally safe-ish roof to lay out on an abnormally warm February day? Did it make any sense to drive down to Morgantown to visit friends at WVU the night before we had an 8 a.m. final in the morning? Did it make sense to eat an Antoon’s pizza after every night out simply because [at the time] it was $4.06 for a whole pie? Did it make sense to leave Peter’s Pub and go across the street to get my eyebrow pierced because some said it would “look good” on me? No. No. No. No. And absolutely not. But I will say this. The college experience doesn’t have to always make sense. In fact, it is the most illogical moments that can ease the underlying stress of it all, making the time management, the group projects, the first world dorm problems, and the insurmountable bills all more bearable. No matter how questionable some of my decisions were, they were all harmless with minimal consequence. This is why I can look back so fondly and laugh out loud with every trip down memory lane. Thus, I encourage all undergraduates to defy logic from time to time. Legally, of course. Trust me… it’s so worth it.

MUSIC

THE MUSICAL “GENRE” IS

If there is an overarching theme within today’s music scene, it’s that the music “genre” is dead. It’s rare nowadays that you can classify an artist’s sound like you used to be able to – and that’s a good thing. This can be attributed to a continual rise in the collaboration amongst artists of different sounds and musical attributions during the past several years. Back in 2010, James

Mercer, lead singer of indie rock band The Shins, came together with hip hop producer Danger Mouse to form the duo Broken Bells, who made a splash with their self-titled album that same year. In 2014, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett paired together on the album Cheek to Cheek and toured as a riveting duet. Not only did it show the range of Gaga, but it also

brought together new and old generations of music lovers. All in all, this is a positive turn for the music industry, as it has forced artists to dive into collaborations and add elements of musical talent they would never have normally attempted. It’s a far cry from when some of us were in college

during the late 1990s and early 2000s when the lip sync “pop star” and manufactured “boy bands” were becoming popular. So, consider yourself lucky. Music is on the upswing due to the spread of social media and You Tube and a growing awareness by listeners of what is unique and creative and what is not.

A R TI S TS TO

T U R N YO U R P H E A D P H O N E S U T O T H IS FA L L The Record Company

Hailing from the City of Angels, this blues rock band cites influences in rock, punk and the blues including John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones and The Stooges. They’ve opened for artists such as B.B. King, Social Distortion, Buddy Guy, Grace Potter, and Trombone Shorty. If you like blues rock, check out their first fulllength album, Give It Back to You.

Blackberry Smoke If you’ve opened for Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd, chances are, you’re pretty good in your own right. This is the case with this Atlanta bred southern-rock band. Although they’ve been around since 2012, they’ve started to really gain recognition during this summer’s tour with Gov’t Mule who they performed with at the local Pittsburgh venue, Stage AE this past August.

The Growlers Speaking of artists blending in several different influences. This band’s sound has often been described as a blend of country, surf, pop, rock and beat. Sounds confusing, but that’s what makes this band so special. Classifying their sound is nearly impossible, but one thing is for sure, it makes you want to move. They’ve opened for the likes of The Black Keys, Devendra Banhart, Julian Casablancas, Night Beats and Jonathan Richman. The band’s fifth studio album, City Club, was released on September 30th and they are currently touring. college | Issue 1

ALBUM RELEAS

There are many albums being released this fall, but there are a few that you shouldn’t skip. Believe us, your ears will thank us.

Angel Olsen My Woman This album is being touted as Olsen’s best one yet. It shows the evolution of a folk singer to a more soulful young woman with notes of darker, more soulful artists like Fiona Apple. But, within that soul, Olsen’s “folk” roots are still evident, with melodic storytelling that vividly flows through her incredible pipes. My Woman is yet another collection of ballads that proves Olsen’s ability to facilitate great empathy from her listeners. However, some of her songs mask darker lyrics and life-contemplating ideas under bubbly, or folky upbeat. If you’ve ever been a fan of Patti Smith, but wished she had brought in a bit more of Janis Joplin, you’ll love this album.

Great local music is outside your door, quite literally. Pittsburgh has a thriving music scene with a myriad of bands on the brink of making it big or those that are already on their way. Aside from good talent, Pittsburgh’s music venues are second to none when it comes to being unique and nurturing new and interesting talent. 28

college | Issue 1

Nevada Color The band has shared the stage with the likes of Panic at the Disco, Cold War Kids, Bad Suns, Rusted Root, PVRIS, and many more. They cite their influences as Young the Giant and Vampire Weekend. Recently, one of their songs was even part of an Aerie campaign. They’re just about to head into the studio to record a full-length album and will be debuting all of this material at upcoming shows.

Kevin Garrett Emerson Jay Emerson Jay spouts electro-pop and is popular with fans of Passion Pit, M83, Goldroom, etc. Their one song, “Move” has over 250,000 plays on Spotify. If you’re looking for an energetic, live set, this is a don’t miss!

Another Pittsburgh native who has gained momentum that has made the most forward progress (aside from Daya) of Pittsburgh musicians. He has written and produced the first track of Beyonce’s album “Lemonade,” and has gained recognition from Grammy award-winning artists like Sam Smith. He’s played and toured with James Bay, James Vincent McMorrow, Alessia Cara and X Ambassadors.

Jack White Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 Have you loved Jack White since the days of The White Stripes? Even if you haven’t, this album is a must. Whether you’ve never listened to White or heard any of his other bands (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), you’ll likely enjoy this album. There are few artists that have come to the forefront in the past decade who have mastered the guitar quite like Mr. White. Thus, listening to his newly released acoustic sessions will no doubt feel like being allowed to listen to a genius secret bedroom recordings.

Chance the Rapper Coloring Book Chicago’s Chance is all grown up and it shows. Gone are his days of 10 Day and Acid Rap. He’s grown up and it shows in his music. His past songs were laden with more immature lyrics, talking about smoking blunts after high school, while Coloring Book includes songs like “All We Got” which focuses more on his fears for the city in which he lives. Coloring Book is a gospel album that uses hiphop, spoken word, soul, jazz, and funk to get across its message. Although the album deals with heavy themes like the lamentation of the gang and police violence in Chicago streets, Chance does a good job of using church and the word of God as his guide to create an optimistic outlook for the future through his sermon of music

YO U R C A M P U S … The Commonheart Combining soul, rhythm and blues, The Commonheart are another great ‘burgh band you won’t want to miss. They have impeccable charisma on stage and a strong front man in Clinton Clegg. Many consider them to be one of the best live bands in the city. Recently, they even shared the stage with Gary Clark Jr. at Stage AE for a packed house. Check out their song, “Cannonball.” college | Issue 1
