Doolittle Home is proud of its top-notch reputation and recently received a Deficiency Free Survey from the Massachusetts Board Of Public Health. With increasingly stringent regulations, achieving the deficiency-free rating is exceedingly difficult. These surveys, and the subsequent ratings, are a useful tool for prospective and current residents; their families and

health care practitioners, to make informed choices about the quality of a long term care facility. It takes an entire team effort to achieve this distinguished rating. DeAnna Willis, Executive Director with the continuous efforts of the entire staff, including activities, maintenance, housekeeping, dietary, and professional medical staff, collaborate daily to provide extraordinary care, which is the hallmark of the Doolittle Experience. At the Open House, you will have the opportunity to meet with Doolittle Home’s caring, friendly staff, Board of Trustees, residents and tour this exceptionally special home. St. Catherine of Siena School Launches OneTo-One iPad Initiative SCSS first Catholic middle school in the Archdiocese of Boston to use this technology for classroom instruction. Beginning this September, every student in Grades 6 – 8 at St. Catherine of Siena School

will have an iPad2 as a valuable tool for learning. The iPad2 will be a significant part of the learning experience of every middle school student and will more effectively prepare them to be high school and college-ready. St. Catherine’s students will use the iPads for class work and home-

work as well as to communicate, collaborate, read assignments, take notes, organize their schedules, and do research in all subject areas. With this progressive initiative, St. Catherine of Siena School will be the first Catholic middle school in the Archdiocese of Boston to use one-to-one iPads for instruction. Teachers received iPads in July and began training and research sessions and experimented on the best classroom applications guided by Jean Harr, Computer Teacher, and Brian Vitarisi, a parent of two children at the school who conducts technology education classes for teachers in Boston. In addition, math teachers Elaine Putnam and Sean Regan and religion and history teacher Brian Delaney spent two days at Boston College in intensive workshops sponsored by the Catholic Schools Foundation for Catholic school educators. “Catholic schools have always viewed academic excellence as an expression of Catholic faith and values," Principal Mary Russo said. "By having our students and teachers use iPads for teaching and learning, we expect them to develop deeper learning and a greater facility with analyzing and solving problems as they go out to serve the world.

2012 Norwood TONY Award Recipient: Owen Smith The Norwood TONY (Ten Outstanding Norwood Youths) Awards were initiated over 40 years ago to recognize exceptional Norwood youths for their voluntary contributions to the community. Through anonymous reviews of the student's volunteer record and a 300-word essay, the Norwood Masons, who acquired the program 17 years ago, named the 2012 TONY Award winners at a banquet held January 30. The award includes a citation from Governor Patrick, a plaque from the lodge, a $1,000 savings bond and a gift card from Perk's coffeehouse. Two supplementary awards also included an additional $500 savings bond. Local Town Pages is also recognizing these admirable young adults with a profile of each student each month in our newspaper. Norwood High School graduate Owen Smith is the seventh student profile in our 2012 TONY Award series. Eighteen year-old Owen Smith waited anxiously as nine names, including his twin sister Molly, were called for the 2012 TONY

Awards. He heard the name he was waiting for when the tenth and final winner was announced. "I was really nervous and once I got it I was really relieved," Smith said. "I wasn't necessarily expecting to win the award, but I was pleased I got the award." By evidence of these compassionate siblings, active community service is a fundamental practice in the Smith household and this young generous volunteer began that lesson early in middle school through his church during summer service week. Through Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, Smith visited the Pine Street Inn, the Ellis Nursing Home and the Perkins School for the Blind serving dinners, playing Bingo with the Ellis residents and helping the Perkins School clean and organize their grounds and facility. In fact, Smith so enjoyed his experiences he has volunteered in the event every summer vacation since. "I really have fun doing it," Smith said. "It's nice to be appreciated for your work and just to

Yes, we have Whoopie Pies!

even talk to different people and age levels. Just to be able to connect with different groups of people is interesting and really important."

He also somehow found time in his schedule for athletics and was on the cross country, indoor track and the tennis teams. He used and shared his athletic abilities to help raise awareness and volunteer in the Walk for Hunger this year and Relay for Life, the Special Olympics and coaching middle school summer tennis last year.

Smith also participated in two service retreats the past two years through Hunger for Justice, which feeds the homeless in Boston and conducts other projects, such as cleaning a YMCA. During that time, volunteers also fasted for 30 hours and slept in cardboard boxes overnight to experience the difficult circumstances homeless people have to endure. "It was a unique retreat that I was able to do," Owen said. "I thought it would be a cool way to meet people and experience something I never tried before." Smith was also very involved volunteering at St. Catherine's in Norwood in alter service, as a religious education teacher and with a youth group. He also worked in the rectory and the maintenance department last year. He also was one of two winners awarded the St. Timothy Award this year through the Archdiocese of Boston which is

bestowed for character, leadership and service in the church and community. At Norwood High School, Smith has been on the National Honor Society and was vice president this year, the National Art Honor Society, and serviced as co-secretary this year, was a SAAD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) officer and tutored at the Cleveland Elementary and Norwood High School.

Smith is attending the University of Notre Dame in Indiana this September and will likely major in a liberal arts program, possibly sociology or psychology. A Notre Dame alumnus is already in the family as Smith's father attended graduate school, but there are many reasons for his college choice. Smith has always been a lifelong school fan and its catholic roots support his background and interests. "They have lots of church, community service and intramural sports so I know I'll stay involved out there," Smith said.

Looking for Donations for 5th Annual Norwood Animal Hospital Yard Sale Didn't quite finish that spring cleaning before summer? Here is an opportunity to thin out the clutter and provide food and gifts for Norwood families for the holidays. Norwood Animal Hospital (NAH) has begun preparing for their annual yard sale and are accepting donations this month for their Oct. 6 benefit. Last year, NAH received an abundance of donated merchandise from generous Norwood neighbors and services from local businesses for raffle baskets. The communal benefit raised over $4,000. All the proceeds provided Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gifts and gift cards for needy Norwood families and the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Norwood. The drive has already begun for this year's event and employees of NAH are armed with tags and markers to receive, sort and label great bargains for this year's round of eager shoppers.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (rain date, Oct. 7), for this year's sale, but before shopping, look around the house for unwanted or unused items to donate. The only merchandise not accepted will be computer equipment, large furniture and stuffed animals. Donations will be accepted anytime during business hours: Monday and Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, 7:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. Norwood Animal Hospital is located at 437 Walpole St. (Rte. 1across from Hannifords Plaza). For questions, call, 781-7693011.

Ms. Wilhelm and Ms. Devine have selected their Board and say they are confident that with such a strong support team, the club will continue to be an asset to the communities it serves. The new Board of Directors includes Norwood residents: Rita Russo, Civic Beautification chair and Newsletter Editor; Donna Lane, Awards, Scholarships, Flower Shows and Publicity chair; Nancy Rando, Sunshine; Ana Puzey, Webmaster; and Mary Beth Cantell, Hospitality. Jenkins and Lane, both officers of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, will serve as liaisons to the parent organization. According to Ms. Firth, the new Programs chair, the Garden Club has a great lineup of speakers scheduled for this year, including talks and demonstrations covering garden design, floral design, soil science, native alternatives to inva-

sive plants, butterflies, birds and bees, and creating miniature landscapes. The Club will enter the Boston and Newport Flower Shows and will continue its PlantA-Row for the hungry campaign, as well its annual Art in Bloom event, where club members interpret the drawings of Norwood High School art students. Most club programs and events are open to the public. In addition to offering a variety of interesting and educational programs, the Club will continue its significant civic beautification efforts for the towns of Norwood and Walpole. The Club’s most visible community contributions to date have been the design and care of the “Washington Street Corridor” which includes the beds in Norwood’s Guild Square, the Round in Norwood Center, the corner of Cottage and Washington streets at the Common, Hawes Pool Park in

South Norwood, and the beds at the entrance of Bird Park in Walpole. This year, they will also complete the landscape plantings at Norwood’s historic George H. Morse house on Washington Street. Because the Club meets in the evening, it draws members from a number of towns – Norwood, Walpole, Westwood, Dedham and several others. The 16-year-old Club is composed of novices, experts and all levels in-between. Membership is open to anyone who loves gardening and is willing to further the Club’s goals. “Our primary objectives are to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening, and to promote sound horticultural practices, civic beauty and the conservation of natural resources,” says Ms. Devine. Ms. Wilhelm adds, “Right now, our plate is full, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our work is a labor of love and we have lots of fun doing it. We are also very proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Serving the families of Nowood and the surrounding communities with thoughtful care for over 60 years.

The Norwood Evening Garden Club has won many awards at the local, regional and national level from the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, the New England Region of Garden Clubs, National Garden Clubs, Inc., the Boston and Newport Flower Shows and the Marshfield Fair. They have also won numerous awards from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and an award of distinction from the Garden Club of America.

BAY STATE ANIMAL COOPERATIVE, INC. will be attending the Norwood Day Celebrating on September 15th! Stop by for animal supplies, give aways, animal advice and much more. We will be selling ice cream to collect money for the many animals we assist annually.

PET CORNER Surrenders: An ever growing Problem

June Update

Every day we hear from people about their pets in which they need to surrender for one reason or another. Without trying to be judgmental we try to assist as many as we have the resources for. We feel the ones we rescue are the lucky ones as they will never be in jeopardy of losing their lives due to lack of space or their health ailments.

Thank you for all the donations sent to help June get her much needed Heart Surgery. She went to Angell Memorial for surgery, recovered extremely fast and is doing great in foster care. The cardiac technician at Angell will adopt this bundle of joy. We are so happy for June.

The Bay State Animal Cooperative, Inc. is once again a proud recipients of a Mass License Plate Grant. We were granted $1,000 to use to support our continued efforts to alter cats for people in need and stray and feral cats we come into contact with in the Plymouth and Norfolk Counties. The Massachusetts "I'm Animal Friendly" license plate tells your community that you care about animals! By purchasing this license plate, you will be contributing to a statewide program that directly benefits Massachusetts animals.

This list of things for people to think about before and during their lives with pets is aimed to assist in this overwhelming problem among all shelters and rescue groups. Allergies are one of the most common reasons for surrendering a pet. Before adding a pet to your family, make sure everyone in the home can tolerate the animal of choice. Visit the type of pet at a shelter and see how everyone does.

Cats Ready For Adoption Now Meet Frankie: An extremely friendly short haired male cat approximately 5 years old needs a new home. He was adopted out in 2008 and was later dumped in a feral cat colony to live. This was no place for a cat who loves to give kisses and snuggle with human whenever possible. Frankie is a family cat who would prefer to live without cat roommates.

Page 9

Meet Katness: Katness is a beautiful kitty that was rescued from a yard amongst other stray kitties. She had a litter of kittens and is now spayed, vaccinated, free f infectious disease and ready for adoption. She loves to have her belly rubbed but needs to feel secure in her surroundings to trust her humane friends. She would do best in a quiet home with adults. She enjoys co-existing with other cats. Kittens: Meet Stripe (Female Tan tiger), George (Male Gray tiger) and Gizmo (FemaleDark Tortie)

family. Lack of these things lead to unhappy dogs and unhappy dog owners.

Think of your new pet as a permanent fixture in your family. They are and should never be treated as disposable.

Consider your life now and how you expect it to change in the years to come. Though you can not predict the future you should consider the potential for drastic changes like; job re-location, addition of children or other pets, movement from apartment to house or changing of apartments and financial stability to name a few.

Think about what it will entail owning this pet now and in the years to come; time, finances, home preparation, training and other similar things.

Consider your family and friend circle for potential caretakers if anything were to happen to you. All family members need to be on board with any new pet addition.

Indoor cats especially, live long lives in excess of 18 years free of un-treatable ailments. Medical care is still very important in all pet ownership and needs to be considered when taking one in.

Think before surrendering you pet.

Prepare for potential allergy resources in case new family members become or allergic.

Unfortunately we are in the process of assisting several pets being surrendered that are in their homes ready for adoption.

Red Cross Hurricane App Now Available “I’m Safe” feature lets people alert their loved ones with a push of a button The American Red Cross has recently launched its official Hurricane App, putting lifesaving information right in the hands of people who live in or who visit hurricane prone areas. This free app is the second in a series to be created by the American Red Cross, the nation’s leader in emergency preparedness, for use on both iPhone and Android platforms. It gives instant access to local and real time information on what to do before, during and after hurricanes. Building on the Red Cross’ leadership in the social media space, the app also includes a number of features that allow people to monitor person-

alized weather alerts in locations where family and friends reside and share information with others in their social networks who might also need it. “We want everyone to be to be ready for hurricanes,” said Eastern MA Red Cross CEO Jarrett Barrios. “The Red Cross Hurricane App allows people to receive and spread emergency information and to share their own status with friends and loved ones through social networks, anywhere, anytime.” The launch of the Red Cross hurricane app comes just before what is traditionally the busiest period of the Atlantic hurricane

season. Features of the app include:

people can use to create a family emergency plan;

• One touch “I’m safe” messaging that allows users to broadcast reassurance to family and friends via social media outlets that they are out of harm’s way;

• Preloaded content that gives users instant access to critical action steps, even without mobile connectivity;

• Location-based NOAA weather alerts for the United States and its territories users can share on social networks; • Remote monitoring of personalized weather alerts where family and friends reside • Locations of open Red Cross shelters; • Simple steps and checklists

Living Healthy Would You Choose Yourself as Your Child’s Teacher? BY CHRISTINE JOHNSTON, OWNER, KOKO FITCLUB OF MANSFIELD, PLAINVILLE & WALPOLE It’s back to school time! Teacher assignments arrived in the mail this week in Mansfield, and parents and students alike were anxious to learn who they would have for a teacher this year. As parents, we recognize that our child’s teacher will significantly influence his/her life for the next eight months - not only academically, but socially and emotionally. The best teachers will have an impact that lasts beyond this one year. We all have our own ideas about what makes a great teacher, but in general, most of us probably agree that we would like a teacher who models good behavior, inspires each child to learn, and encourages each child to be the best they can be.

Consider this... Have you turned that same lens with which you assess your child’s teacher assignment on yourself? As a parent or guardian, you are your child’s most important teacher, and that assignment does not last just one school year but a lifetime. Additionally, teaching your child does not end with bedtime stories, brushing teeth, and eating fruits and vegetables, but extends to the behaviors and attitudes we each choose to express every day. Now, more than ever, teaching children to be active and make fitness a priority in their lives will be critical to their long term health and success. Every day, there is new evidence that staying active and healthy from a young age is the key to avoiding many debilitating illnesses such as diabetes and heart

disease. As parents, we have an opportunity to become healthy and fit ourselves and show our children that staying fit is as important as brushing our teach, getting a good night’s sleep, and trying hard in school every day. Prior to joining and owning Koko FitClub, I would not have called myself a “couch potato.” In fact, being a busy working mom of three children, I had convinced myself that I MUST be active enough through every day life to be setting the proper example for

Page 11

my children. Clearly, not true. The reality is that my children saw a mother who worked hard and took them to all of their activities, but who was often tired at the end of the day. We were not engaged in fitness as a family, and I never took time to go to the gym or a class to improve myself. I fell into the classic mom trap - spending time on fitness was spending time on me, and I needed to devote my time, energy, and money to my children.

become some of our favorite family activities. Without question the investment in fitness that started out as “something for me” quickly became something that has paid off for our entire family.

Then, in September of 2010, everything changed. I joined Koko FitClub and realized quickly that a commitment to fitness is anything but selfish. My children quickly adapted to me making Koko FitClub a priority in my life. After all, with Koko’s Smartraining system, focused on maximum results in minimal time, I was only spending one hour per day, approximately 3-4 days per week, at Koko FitClub. The rest of my “free time” is still spent with them, and the quality of our activities has increased dramatically. Family hikes and family bike rides often fill our spare time and have

On Mother’s Day 2011, I realized just how important the lesson from my new fitness priority was. My daughter wrote a poem for me at school. The assignment was to write a poem about your mom with words you would use to describe her. The words “exercise” and “fitness” appeared in that poem, and I knew they would not have been there just one year before. I was so thankful to be setting the proper example for my children. I was finally the person that I would select as my children’s lifetime teacher.

Back-to-School Oral Exam Before You Get Back on the Bus—See Your Dentist For hundreds of thousands of children across Massachusetts, the end of summer marks the beginning of another school year. This often means a trip to the pediatrician or family doctor for a physical exam. Sadly, however, one part of the body that is still being overlooked is right under our noses— the mouth, which, upon closer examination, reveals that the state of oral health among thousands of Massachusetts children is not making the grade. According to the Massachusetts

Dental Society (MDS), dental decay is the single most prevalent childhood disease. Approximately 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related problems. Just like that physical exam before school starts, taking the preventive measure of a dental exam may help prevent your child from missing valuable school days later in the year. A dentist will be able to examine your child's teeth and mouth for signs of decay or other issues and

Preventing dental disease in children also involves adopting good oral hygiene habits, limiting their intake of sugary drinks and snacks, and having dental sealants applied when appropriate. Parents can help children maintain a healthy smile all year long by making sure they floss their teeth and brush well at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste. Avoid packing their school lunch bags with snack items such as candy, sugared gum, sticky granola bars, and even raisins, which can cling to the teeth and lead to decay. You may also want to consider dental sealants, which are thin plastic coatings brushed on to the tooth surfaces to prevent cavities. And if your community's water supply is not fluoridated or if you have private well water, check with your dentist about the possibility of fluoride supplements for your child.

You also want to ensure your child's teeth are healthy and cavity-free because, in addition to the oral health implications, children can't concentrate and learn in school when they have a toothache.

Living Healthy The Role of Physical Therapy in Knee Injuries CONTRIBUTED BY JOHN VACOVEC, OWNER AND THERAPIST OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND SPORTS REHAB, INC. When there is a direct impact to the knee (as commonly seen in sports injuries), the knee joint can twist or stretch beyond its normal capacity causing ligament tears (or sprains), muscle tears (or strains), or cartilage injuries. Inflammation of protective cushioning in the knee joint (meniscus), or fluidfilled sacs inside the knee joint (bursitis), can also occur as a result of excessive wear and tear in the knee.

from knee pain, you may benefit from attending two to three physical therapy sessions a week over the course of several weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. A physical therapist is a trained health care professional who can design an effective injury prevention program, in addition to a comprehensive rehabilitation program for the knee. The goal of physical therapy is to restore mobility to your knee as quickly as possible. A Safe and Effective Treatment Plan A physical therapist is a coach, mentor, and caregiver for the patient. The goal of the therapist is to help you recover from pain and get

you back to normal mobility as quickly as possible. One of the treatment objectives is strategic strengthening of the muscles around the knee to make the joint more stable, while protecting sensitive tissues during the healing process. Depending on the results of your evaluation, the physical therapist may use heat to warm up the area, and ice to cool down muscles and reduce swelling. Ultrasound may also be used to help rehabilitate the knee. This treatment uses high frequency sound waves to stimulate deep tissues in the body, facilitate healing and improve blood flow to the tissues. The therapist may also use electrical stimulation, if appropriate. This modality sends an electrical current the affected area to stimulate muscle contraction. New Police Chief's Beat on Local Crime Before starting his job as the Norwood Police Chief William Brooks III promised to, wear a uniform, walk the beat, and “disrupt” the drug system. He has kept those promises and is picking up the pace. To date, the Norwood Police Department has participated in three drug raids – two of which Chief Brooks personally participated. Smiling, he said his officers were “too quick” for him to participate in the third.

property was added. He is being held on $1,000 cash bail.”

In fact, in the midst of conducting the interview for this article, one of the lieutenants called. Plainclothes officer, David Eysie, witnessed a resident of 15 Sturtevant Ave, Henry Samuels, do a hand-to-hand drug transaction with two teenagers. The officer stopped the two teenagers and recovered three bags of marijuana the teenagers had purchased.

In this continuing quest to “suppress drug distribution and abuse,” Chief Brooks recently presented selectmen with his strategy on combating the abuse of heroin and prescription painkillers, specifically opioids such as Percocet®, Roxicet®, Endocet®, and hydrocodone (i.e. Vicodin). The department uses a crime-control strategy based on the principles of the New York City Police Department’s Compstat approach. It consists of 1) accurate timely intelligence, 2) rapid deployment of resources, 3) use of effective tactics, and 4) relentless follow-up and assessment. They also work with the Norfolk County Police Anti-Crime Task Force (NORPAC), which serves 15 Norfolk county communities including Norwood.

According to Brooks, “In the end, we drove to Sturtevant and arrested him. He has a previous conviction for a drug sale, so he faces charges as a second offender. While in our cell, he damaged the sprinkler system causing some flooding on the first floor. So that charge of malicious destruction of

The department pursues drug dealers, works with landlords, and provides intervention assistance to users. Officers are in uniform and in plainclothes. They walk the streets, talk to residents, gather intelligence, and respond promptly as indicated by the incident that developed while conducting the in-

terview for this article. Chief Brooks says landlords’ property is “subject to forfeiture if they knowingly allow (drug deals) to take place and make no effort to prevent it.” The department notifies property owners in writing when a tenant is caught selling drugs from a rented unit. In addition, the department provides documents and a list of additional resources to evict tenants who deal drugs and instructions for beginning eviction proceedings. Chief Brooks does not just believe in arresting and moving the drug sellers out of town; he wants to stop the problem itself. He tells a story of resident who asked an officer for help for an addicted family member; the officer was eager but didn’t know how to respond. The department is now equipped to help addicts or their families find a treatment facility. Asked about the backlog of addicts seeking assistance and the limited resources, Chief Brooks said, “it’s a matter of timing.” In particular, he recommends making phone calls prior to court opening. Since some of these drugs are taken intravenously, and because a

prescription is no longer required to purchase syringes (and at least one local chain is selling them individually), the chief says, “Syringes have become the beer can of the 70’s.” Users don’t want to be caught with them; they’re easy to buy, so people just throw them out car windows.

Page 15 Chief Brooks made assurances that phone calls will not be ignored on his watch. He says, “All this works because everyone at the Norwood Police Department is on the same page and works hard to make Norwood a better place.” Please read the entire strategy online at www.norwoodma.gov/police under the Drug Control tab.

He also mentions MGL Section 35, which lets police petition the court for commitment, if “he has reason to believe (the person) is an alcoholic or a substance abuser.” This is particularly helpful since family members are afraid of damaging their relationship with the abuser. A confidential Report a Tip line (781-440-5181) is available to report drug tips or emails may be sent to reportatip@norwoodma.gov. However, residents are encouraged to call 911 to report drug activity currently in progress. After being told a story about watching a cocaine “buy” in another Norfolk County town in which three phone calls to detectives were ignored (even though a license plate, vehicle and seller description were made available),

town gazebo lawn will serve as the second anchor with the food tent, sports events, trolley rides and games. Norwood Day is a true endorsement for the shared respect and commitment of its residential and business communities. To celebrate the strength of its collective loyalties, local restaurants will be offering samples of its diverse menus as a thank you for the continued patronage that has made Norwood the restaurant capital of the area. Trolleys will also transport riders to noteworthy locations throughout town, including the police and fire stations, the airport, Norwood High School and the Norwood Central MBTA station The entire communal party will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for just $3 for a Norwood Day button ($4 the day of the event), entrance and participation is free to all events. Buttons can be purchased at Town Hall, the Civic Center, Senior Center, Morrill Memorial Library and some

local merchants. "The whole theory behind it is that you buy a button for three dollars and you get into all these things for free," Recreation Directory Gerry Miller said. "We make it as inexpensive as possible and it works out well." Local and business sponsors contributed greatly to the abundance of food and entertainment for Norwood Day. TGI Fridays has been a donor for approximately seven years and have given $15,000 for

the Friday night fireworks display. The second largest sponsor, Norwood Bank, donated funds for the kiddie rides, Comcast is responsible for the trolley tours, Lustra Cleaners is proving the food tent, Dedham Savings Bank is offering pony rides, Gillooly Funeral Home is backing the rock climbing wall, UTI is subsidizing Big Daddy's Racing, Eye Care Specialists is backing the game van and Republic Pipe is paying for the port-apotties. At press time, sponsors were still coming forward to contribute to the residential and town tribute. According to Miller, last year's event attracted approximately 15,000 residents. Norwood Day has become a valuable opportunity for local organizations and merchants to meet their neighbors and celebrate the spirit of the town's communal and philanthropic ideas and values. Buy a button and join in the fun and celebrations!

Youth Fall Flag Football Available This Fall Over the past few summers Skyhawks Sports Academy, the leader in youth sports programs since 1979, has been building a relationship with the Norwood Recreation Department. While their main focus has been to run summer camps with programs that are popular with the kids in town, this upcoming fall the Skyhawks Sports Academy will be introducing a six-week flag football curriculum to Norwood residents. “We had introduced flag football into our mix earlier this summer in Norwood and it was somewhat successful with 17 participants,” Sky-

hawks Massachusetts Area Manager Katie Holbrook said. “With its success Linda Berger (Program Director) of the Norwood Recreation Department gave us the go ahead to expand the program this fall.” Skyhawks Flag Football is the perfect program for young athletes who want a complete introduction to “America’s Game” or for those who simply want to brush up on their skills in preparation for league play. Skyhawk coaches are experienced high school and/or college football players who know the sport and can provide the participants the skill sets

Norwood Sports Ice Arena in Norwood Takes Another Positive Step Norwood Representative John H. Rogers secured $5.6 million in funding toward the design and construction of a Department of Conservation and Recreation ice arena in South Norwood during a recent House session. Rogers has been working with Norwood Youth Hockey, rink enthusiasts, and local officials in search for funding for a Norwood-base rink for the town.

Coakley Middle School with Norwood town officials, DCR engineers and youth group organizers to begin the discussion of the possibility of constructing a DCR ice rink in Norwood. A senior DCR engineer at the time surveyed the site, calling it an ideal place due to its access to existing water, sewer, electricity and parking spaces which reduces construction costs overall.

Rogers amended a state budget that closes out the books for FY2012 with language that authorizes and directs the state to expend up to $5,659,000 on a DCR rink in Norwood.

The Rogers amendment amended a 2008 environmental bond authorization that allows for the construction of publicly owned rinks. Earlier in July, met with DCR Commissioner Ed Lambert, Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan, and Deputy Secretary of Administration and Finance Scott Jordan to discuss a Norwood DCR rink. Rogers obtained agreement from these officials that the Norwood rink proposal is consistent with Governor Deval Patrick’s fiveyear capital investment plan.

“This is great news for Norwood families as well as the Commonwealth,” Rogers said. “The state will have an asset that it doesn’t have to maintain or manage; the town can manage the asset and collect the revenues it generates; the neighborhood will benefit from an economic surge; and our youth, seniors, and all of Norwood’s families will at long last have access to a home rink,” said Rogers. Back in June, Rogers organized a meeting in South Norwood at the

Out and About By Dawn C. FitzgeralD

September Staples

apparently that was cool enough.

Ah, September, the only month of the year you can find a pen in the Fitzgerald house without having to spend ten minutes tearing open drawers or rummaging through pocket books- potentially letting a bad word or two slip out.

But times, like book bags have changed. And unfortunately for me, I know the back pack game too well. But this year, I vow-no matter how many times I am asked to buy princesses, fairies, or frogs, I’m buying plain old plaid or just plain old plain. Period.

In September we have a plethora of pens in various colors and points. Some come in boxes, others wrapped in plastic -all awaiting the first day of school. By the end of the month (who am I kidding, by the end of the first week) the pens will be gone- out of ink, lost, lent out, chewed up. Let the back to school shopping games begin! With three kids and one crazed adult all heading back to school this month, the cost of supplies seem to be adding up to a small car payment. Let’s start with the backpack issue. According to the small, unemployable, financially dependent people that live in my house (and eat all my food) last year’s back pack is so last year.

When I was a kid, I had the same book bag for five years. When I first got it, it read in bold yellow letters- St. Mary’s School. When I finally threw it away only because I was changing schools- it read “May’s cool. Sure it had gaping holes. Of course, the pencils fell out of the holes along with pens and milk money. It said “cool on it, and Clip and save this coupon

Hopefully, plain and boring with get me through two school years. But I doubt it. This year I too am getting a new backpack. Not because my old one wasn’t fancy enough or cool enough but because I killed it. Lugging around thirty five pounds of books (yes, I actually weighted them) proved too much to bear for last year’s bag. So it broke. The wheels just snapped right off, it sagged and basically imploded. I haven’t decided what kind of wheeled back to school bag I’ll be getting but it too will be plain -or possibly plaid. I can already hear the beeping of the credit card machine as I swipe away. For school this year, my son needs a thesaurus. Why can he use the one that MS Word provides- for free? Eventually this year’s thesaurus -like last year’s dictionary- will end up in the same spot, gathering dust under the boy’s bed. Let’s not forget the multitude of folders, and binders that need to be bought. I know it’s supposed

to keep the kiddies organized. But in reality too many binders can equal mass confusion. Here’s a back to school math question. If I am to purchase a total of ten binders for my two older children attending two different schools on either side of town -what is the probability that by the end of the third week of school at least four of the purchased binders are sitting forgotten on my kitchen counter and not in the correct classroom? Or even the right school? Number two pencil ready, begin. I’ve already figured out the answer. I did the math in my head, without scrap paper or pen. If my calculations are correct the answer is one hundred and ten percent. But math has never been my strong suit. I’m hoping my calculations are incorrect. I’m taking into consideration that this is a new school year and my kids and I are all a bit older (and gosh I hope wiser) and that the right binders go with the correct kids to the right school into the correct classroom -at least until the end of September.
