"We upgraded everything," Managing Director Frederick Wobrock said. "It had been close to 14 years without much done. We did everything from the wallpaper coming off, new paint, fixtures and rugs." Gone are the overcast reflections of a traditional funeral home. The completed four-month renewal now projects earthy tones, textures and communal accessories that resemble the ascetics of a personal residence with hues of browns, beige and burgundy, light sheers on the windows, complimentary copper and off-white leaf flooring and clear glass doors that brighten the foyer with natural sunlight. Now people bring in their kids because it isn’t gloomy and scary." Wobrock realized their goal of inviting hues was successfully met when he received the greatest compliment a renovation could receive; a color referral. "An 80 year-old woman asked me what color was on the wall for

her home, which is exactly what we wanted," Wobrock said. Gillooly Funeral Home has been a mainstay in the Norwood community since it opened its doors in 1892. It services approximately 120 funerals per year, primarily from the Norwood, Walpole and Westwood areas. The renovation staff acknowledged the significance of this neighborhood familiarity and communal relationship with its patrons and secured that connection with printed memories. In the main hallway, guests can now gaze upon a wall and recognize identifiable local landmarks that influenced the lives of generations, such as the Norwood High School and gazebo or Walpole and Dedham Town Centers. "We took a lot of time, effort and energy in decorating the home with local sites making it more normal to be there" Wobrock said. "People are looking at the pictures saying, I have that in my dining room." Gillooly Funeral Home is located at 126 Walpole St., in Norwood. Gillooly is a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of more than 1,600 funeral, cremation and

In January Kelsie participated in a day of community service representing Norwood for Governor Patrick’s Project 351. One 8th grader from every middle school in the Commonwealth was chosen to represent their town. She was nominated because of her ethic of service and ability to represent her community as a proud ambassador. Kelsie met with the Governor and got her picture taken with him. This was a very rewarding experience that has inspired Kelsie to continue with her volunteerism.

Thai Cilantro - For Lunch or Dinner Fast food may seem like the most economical option for lunch, but Thai Cilantro in Norwood Center is proposing an enhanced, healthier solution with equally appetizing rates to the midday meal, and this option doesn't include fumbling with food in the car or grabbing quick bites at your desk. For only $6.95, this warm, inviting restaurant is offering a satisfying and nutritious meal that includes a protein entree with noodles or rice, soup and dessert. The choices include an abundance of entrees that include chicken, beef, tofu, pork or eggs, prepared with varying fruit, vegetable and spice combinations. With these selections and prices, Thai Cilantro has successfully transformed the weekday luncheon into a meal to be savored. The dinner menu at Thai Cilantro is similarly impressive as the lunch special and a great value with plated dinners ranging

Bike Safety Event Together Yes (a nonprofit resource on sustainability in Norwood) invites Norwood residents to attend a Bike Safety event to be held Saturday, June 18 (rain date June 25) from 10 AM-Noon, in the Parking lot behind Norwood Bank (corner of Park and Broadway Streets). This is a free event, and includes a presentation on bike safety, bike safety checks, what to do with unwanted bikes and bike parts, and the opportunity to buy Health Department bike helmets at $5. The event is co-sponsored by Norwood Bank, Norwood Bike Depot, Norwood Bike Club, and the Norwood Recycling, Police, and Health Departments. There will be plenty of experts to answer questions, and a chance to meet other bicyclers. Thai Cilantro is also offering a grand opening dinner exclusive, Mondays through Thursdays, with a three-course dinner for two, which includes an appetizer platter, two entrees, a dessert and two glasses of wine, all for $29.95. While the menu is reasonably priced, the selection at Thai Cilantro is anything but average, with a diverse collection of options. It offers a wide variety of appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, rice and noodle dishes and traditional Thai desserts. Each entree begins as a vegetarian plate and offers choices at no extra charge such as, chicken, beef, pork and tofu (shrimp is an additional $2) and is finished with their signature garnish. You guessed it, cilantro. For dessert, diners can indulge in an ethnic specialty, such as sticky rice with mango, fried ice cream or fried banana

Enjoy “Art In The Park” At The Norwood Town Common - Saturday, June 18th “Art in the Park”, the most important event of the year for the Norwood Art Association, is approaching quickly. Approximately fifty local artists from Norwood and surrounding communities will display their original work.

idents Inez Reardon and Arlene Mollo decided that Norwood deserved its own art association. The two received fifty six responses to an article they placed in the Norwood Messenger, then the only local newspaper. The Norwood Art Association was off and running! The tradition of an annual show on the Town Common has continued ever since.

This annual art exhibit and sale will take place once again, by the beautiful gazebo on the Norwood Town Common on Saturday June 18th, from 10 am to 3 pm. (Rain date is Sunday the 19th) Original framed art work in watercolor, oil, pastel and acrylic will be on display - featuring all the colors of spring! Also displayed will be beautiful works in mixed media, drawing, and photography. The visitor will enjoy views of ocean scenes, landscapes, floral works, “still life” and portraits. The exhibit is judged by a professional artist; ribbons are awarded in each category plus the overall Best of Show. Also available for sale (at very affordable prices!) will be the popu-

art demonstrations at the library, plus affordable, high quality art lessons. Above all, they provide the opportunity for members to exhibit their work and develop as artists. New members are welcome, whether beginning artist or professional, including those who simply enjoy art! To join, it is not necessary to be a Norwood resident; many members are from surrounding towns. Simply call NAA President Joan Percy at 781-7622672 for more information, or pick

up an application at the Art in the Park show. The art demonstrations, which are free and open to the public, are held monthly at the library from September through May - featuring noted local artists demonstrating their own special techniques. Usually, a painting is created from start to finish - much to the delight of the audience! The art classes, with noted artist and curator Jonathan Fairbanks, take place every Friday from 10 am to 1 pm. To encourage aspiring young artists, the Association presents a scholarship each year to a graduating Norwood High School student who shows outstanding artistic ability. The winner receives his/her award in person at “Art in the Park”. The NAA holds an annual Spring Show, a holiday show in November, and is often involved in the Norwood Day festivities and the Marina Bay Art Show. Thanks to the support of the Norwood Cultural Council and the Boch Foundation, dues are just $15 a year.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sponsored by

Junior pitcher for the Norwood Mustang’s Varsity Baseball team, Sean O’Neill, is Athletic Republic’s “Athlete of the Month” for June. Sean has proven early in his career that he is capable of leading his team and providing admirable talent on the pitching mound.

Sean is a strong student at Norwood High School where he has made the honor roll. He is also a member of SADD and the Friendship Clubs. Sean is one of three children; he has an older brother Nick who has just finished his sophomore year at Notre Dame, and a younger sister Moura, both of whom are athletes as well. His proud parents are Bob and Joanne.

Sean is a talented two-sport athlete, also excelling in basketball at the varsity level. He was named captain of both the baseball and basketball teams as junior to recognize his efforts. Head baseball coach Jim Sweeney says of O’Neill; “he is a great team player, and has the confidence to lead his team”. Sean is currently batting .360 and is 1-1 on the mound. He will continue to be an asset to his team for the remainder of the season.

Athletic Republic would like to wish Sean and the Norwood Baseball team good luck in the remainder of their season. We hope to see continued leadership and success from Sean through his career at Norwood and beyond.

Essentials Day Spa In today's tight economy, every dollar counts, and when customers do reach into their wallets, they want and expect the best value for their money. That financial approach can be greatly applied to the skin care and nail industries. When spending their valuable discretionary income on these types of services, clients anticipate the entire indulgence experience. The customers at Essentials Day Spa in Norwood receive that elite treatment and leave the salon refreshed, relaxed and definitely with a satisfied sensation of pampering. "Some hair or nail salons may be able to do a wax, but not to the extent we provide," Essentials Day Spa owner Liz Burgess said. "People have a sense of real intimacy and we get to know our clients so they feel comfortable and welcome. There are not many places like that." Burgess is referring to the continuing popular trend of one-stop shopping. Many salons offer a diverse assortment of hair and personal care services to accommodate the hectic schedule of their clients, but sometimes time is a poor replacement for quality and comfort.

"We don't do hair so we are not competing," Burgess said. "It is hard to do that with pampering because it is such a high octane kind of service. It's tricky to do both in a way that satisfies everybody's needs." With a concentrated area of expertise, Burgess explains that the surroundings and outlook of her salon are peaceful and soothing. The environment is both intimate and personal and clients spending an afternoon, or even an hour, take a respite from their busy lifestyles and carve out an intermission from their busy calendars just for themselves.

Ferrazzani, licensed in electrolysis since 1975, brings a tremendous amount of experience to Essentials and specializes in hair removal from small to large areas. Their combined knowledge not only strengthened the management presence, it also enhanced appointment availability.

Barbara Ferrazzani and Elizabeth Burgess.

"Having someone here every day of the week gives people flexibility of hours to choose from," Burgess said. "We both very much agree in professionalism and keeping the bar high to give clients the best service."

"We have special rooms specifically for services. It's not a rush, harried experience," Burgess said. "If you are going to get the service, why not get the experience?" Essentials Day Spa offers the same luxurious treatments you would find at elite salons, but without the inflated rates. Their services range from skincare, to waxing, electrolysis, nail care, massage and body treatments. Essentials Day Spa is one of only a handful of full-service spas in the area, but others are

Did you leave your 401(k) behind when you left your job? BY: PHIL SWAN, CLTC, Vice President Norwood Bank, Investment Executive Infinex Financial Group Norwood Financial Services at Norwood Bank 11 Central St. Norwood, MA 781-440-4234 pswan@infinexgroup.com If you left your job (voluntarily or involuntarily) did you leave your 401(k) with your ex-employer? When you terminate employment, you are entitled to a distribution of your vested 401(k) amount. (The vested amount is

what you have a right to.) Your vested balance always includes your own contributions (pretax, after-tax, and ROTH) and typically any investment earnings on those amounts. It also includes employer contributions (and earnings) that have satisfied your plan's vesting schedule. Every plan has its own vesting schedule and you will want to make sure you understand how your plan works before making any decisions. This information can be found in the ‘summary plan description’ which is

available through the plan administrator. If you don’t have a copy, checking in with the benefits manager in the human resources area is a good place to start. If you take a distribution from your 401(k), you will be taxed at ordinary income tax rates (except for any after tax or ROTH 401(k) contributions), and if you are under age 55, you may be subject to an additional 10% federal tax penalty. Before you suit up, I’d like to take out a moment to point out some beach basics. For example- we do not live in St. Tropez. Therefore a bikini top and full bottom should be worn on the beach. Personally, I have no desire to see anyone in an E, F, or G string- regardless of how many hours were spent at

Rolling your 401(k) into an IRA will typically give you many more investment options that can be tailored to your specific goals, timeframes and risk tolerance. Many times, 401((k) plans offer you limited investment choices and typically you will not have one specific advisor to help you select what investments are best for your individual needs. if you look like a Yeti, maybe it’s time to consider shaving or waxing that back. And soon. As for me, the battle of the bathing suit varies from year to year. Last year I was sporting a one piece suit with a skirt- something I’m sure my grandmother wore in the 1950’s. This year, I’ll be sporting a two piece-one that not only fits me but covers me up. Physical Therapy In Sports: Golf Highlight Contributed by John Vacovec: Owner and Therapist of Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab., Inc. The achievements of professional golfers like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Lorena Ochoa highlight a new athleticism associated with a sport that was once considered "leisurely." Today's men and women golfers, both amateurs and professionals, are training to be stronger and more flexible, capable of far powerful swings than ever before. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), awareness of proper posture and the importance of fitness and flexibility are just as important for weekend golfers as they are for professional athletes. Most athletes, including golfers spend thousands of dollars each year on new and improved equipment, but the most important piece of equipment is the human body. Golf Conditioning By Your Physical Therapist Just like any professional sport, there has been a significant increase in injuries among professional golfers, primarily because of the increased physical stress and intense training associated with the sport. Strength, flexibility, and endurance are just as important as exceptional driving distance and keen putting skills. It is now the norm, not the exception, for professional and non-professional men and women golfers to work with physical therapists to improve these factors. For golfers to improve their swing, it is vital

that these programs be tailored to their individual skills. There are certain types of training that may actually hinder - not help - athletes. What works for someone else may not work for you! Call us today to find out what you are missing in your training as you aim to excel at your sport. We can help condition you for all sports, not just golf. Keeping Injuries Away Professional golfers make it look easy, but the golf swing is actually one of the most difficult and complicated movements in all of

sports, requiring stability in some joints and flexibility in others. The ability to coordinate motion, strength, and function throughout the swing play a large role in preventing injuries. A better swing means a more accurate ball strike, greater distance, and less stress on the muscles and joints. Our physical therapists work with individuals in all sports. We have observed that recreational golfers often complain of spine-related injuries, including upper and lower back, shoulder and neck pain. Leisure golfers attempt to swing with the speed and force of professional athletes, but did you know that with each swing 7 to 8 times a golfer's weight is directed into the

spine? With this kind of force, it's easy to damage discs and strain muscles. Multiple core (not just abdomen) stabilization exercises are critical for golfers. Pilates programs are an example of excellent injury-prevention tools that can ultimately help golfers improve their performance. Golfers of all ages and abilities should make a habit of the following: Warm up and stretch before teeing off. Spend at least 20 minutes warming up and stretching all the major muscle groups, especially the back and extremities, before practice or play. Don’t wait until you are on the course before stretching because that is neither practical nor conducive to a thorough stretch. Don't forget the cardiovascular conditioning. Fatigue can result in poor performance due to a lack of coordinated body movements. To keep endurance up and muscles warm and conditioned, we suggest golfers walk the course whenever possible, as continued aerobic conditioning is an essential component of golf fitness. Call us today to see what you are missing to help you improve your game (and your swing)! Prepared by 2011 Therapy Newsletter. All rights reserved. Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab. June 1. 2011 JUMPING THe BROOM (PG-13) - Starring Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine, Meagan Good, Tasha Smith, Julie Bowen, DeRay Davis, Valarie Pettiford, Mike Epps, Romeo, Tenika Davis, and T.D. Jakes. Jason (Alonso) is a successful investment banker from humble roots. His protective mother (Devine) is a Brooklyn postal worker and his smart-ass cousins (Epps and Davis) kid him about his minority position in a "white man's" world. All of that is about to change -- or actually, get a whole lot more heated -- when he announces that he intends to marry the beautiful, and wealthy, Sabrina (Patton). Her family lives on Martha's Vineyard, puts on airs, speaks French, and claims a different "slave" ancestry from that of the rest of their black brethren. The movie is elegantly photographed. There is something about a wedding that bestows a pleasing view upon a film. How can you go wrong with the beautiful Martha's Vineyard? RATING: B BRIDeSMAIDS (R) - Starring Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Chris O'Dowd, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Jon Hamm. As one might surmise from the title, the film is about a wedding. Lilian (Rudolph) has finally been asked the question by her boyfriend and now the time has arrived to begin planning the festivities. For her Maid of Honor, she chooses her oldest, dearest friend: Annie (Wiig), who's not in a romantic mood at the moment. Her boyfriend has broken up with her, her current bedmate (Hamm) likes the "friends with benefits" relationship, and she can't see a future with the cop (O'Dowd) who is besotted with her. Meanwhile, she has the rest of the bridal party to contend with. Lilian chooses four others: the sainted Helen (Byrne), who can do no wrong; the naïve Becca (Kemper), who is a newlywed; the uncouth and uncensored Megan (McCarthy); and the pasther-prime sexpot Rita (McLendon-Covey). Despite being Maid of Honor, Annie finds that she has a rival when it comes to every nuance of her duties, so the wedding becomes not about Lilian, but about who is her true best friend. This is funny, lewd, crude, and very inappropriate at times. It definitely deserves its R rating. Wiig is funny, but McCarthy is the one who steals almost every scene. She is hilarious and isn't afraid to make fun of herself. RATING: B THOR (PG-13) - Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings, Jaimie Alexander, Ray

MoVIe reVIeWS Stevenson, Joshua Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Clark Gregg, Colm Feore, Idris Elba, and Rene Russo. Directed by Kenneth Marvel's Thor Branagh. (Hemsworth) is the arrogant heir to the monarch-god Odin (Hopkins) and the proverbial big man on campus, which in this case is the floating celestial realm of Asgard. We meet Thor as he's poised to assume the throne from Odin. His brother Loki (Hiddleston) must remain waiting in the wings. When an incident occurs that threatens the long-standing peace between the Asgardians and their ancient foes, the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, Thor takes it upon himself -- bringing Loki and his pals along with him -- to dole out some hammer-throwing justice. Enraged at Thor's defiance, Odin strips his son his mighty hammer Mjolnir, and casts him out of Asgard and down to Midgard (aka Earth) to learn humility, which leaves Loki standing to gain the throne ... once Odin's out of the picture. Landing in the middle of the New Mexico desert, Thor is found by astrophysicist (Portman), her colleague Dr. Selvig (Skarsgard) and her assistant (Dennings). While earthbound, Thor attempts to retrieve Mjolnir from the crater where it landed. The area is now under the control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its agent (Gregg) on the scene. Alas, Thor is not yet worthy to hold the hammer again. He must change if he's ever going to return to Asgard and stop Loki. I saw this in 3-D and in the IMAX. My senses were on overload -- way too much CGI for my brain. Again, the movie continues after the credits so don't be in a rush to leave. It gives us a little glimpse into the next installment. RATING: BSOMeTHING BORROWeD (PG-13) - Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, John Krasinski, Steve Howey, and Ashley Williams. Rachel (Goodwin) is a talented attorney at a top New York law firm, a generous and loyal friend and, unhappily, still single -- as her engaged best friend Darcy (Hudson) is constantly reminding her. But, after one drink too many at her 30th birthday party, perpetual good girl Rachel unexpectedly ends up in bed with the guy she's had a crush on since law school, Dex (Egglesfield), who just happens to be Darcy's fiancé. When Rachel and Darcy's lifelong friend-

ship collides with true love, it leads to unexpected complications and potentially explosive romantic revelations. Meanwhile, Ethan (Krasinski), who has been Rachel's constant confidante and sometimes conscience, has been harboring a secret of his own. Hudson is over the top and at times is annoying, Goodwin and Egglesfield have great chemistry and Krasinski is hilarious and saves the movie from being intolerable. Even though the movie didn't end the way I had hoped; I was still entertained. I'm not sure if it matters, but there's a little more of the film that continues after the credits. RATING: BPROM (PG) - Starring Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonnell, DeVaughn Nixon, Danielle Campbell, Jere Burns, and Yin Chang. This is Disney's take on the big night. Teegarden plays Nova Prescott, senior class president and head of the prom committee and feels an added pressure to make the event extraordinary. Everything seems to be on track for an enchanted evening until the shed housing the prom decorations burns to the ground. With her fellow committee members now tied up with other obligations, Prescott is left to pull things together on her own. Fortunately, or not, Principal Dunnan (Burns) comes to her rescue when he coerces Jesse Ritcher (McDonell) into helping her. Living in the shadow of his absentee father, the troubled Jesse is saddled with a lot of baggage. But while he grudgingly puts in his hours with Nova, he begins to appreciate her dedication, even after she gets dumped by her own prom date. Meanwhile, the other students experience various degrees of euphoria and misery leading up to the dance. Just as the film High School Musical - Senior Year gave that graduating class at East High a chance to perform one last melodic extravaganza, while this film brings the students of Brookside High together for a final celebration (minus all the song and dance routines). RATING: C+ FAST FIVe (PG-13) - Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Sung Kang, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and Joaquim de Almedia. The summer movie season of 2011 has arrived in much the same manner as many summer movie seasons: with a blaze of action and special effects.

This is the fifth installment to the Fast and Furious franchise. The movie opens an undetermined time after the fourth installment. The opening sequence is shorter than the one in its predecessor as Brian (Walker) and his girlfriend, Mia (Brewster), organize a jailbreak for Dominic (Diesel), who is being taken to prison in a bus. A little fancy driving is all that's necessary to flip the bus and spring the criminal. For their efforts, Brian and Mia get their own "Wanted" posters and have to hide out in Rio while their goal is the $100 million cash stockpile of a drug kingpin (Almedia). To accomplish that theft, the intrepid trio must assemble a team - a dirty dozen of sorts. However, not only are Dominic, Brian, and Mia at war with the Brazilian drug lord, they are being hunted by an elite United States special agent named Hobbs (Johnson), whose methods are charitably referred to as "wrath of God" stuff. Be sure and stay after the credits - a little tease for the next installment... stay tuned. RATING: B

AFRICAN CATS (G) - Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. The film follows two families of felines in a remote valley in Kenya's 580square-mile Masai Mara National Reserve. As the seasons change, we see young lions and cheetahs come of age against all odds as their elders struggle to find food and shelter for them. Unfortunately, hunger and extreme conditions aren't the only problems the animals face. Predators are always on the prowl, from hyenas and crocodiles to dominant males of the same species. The audience is taken on a heartwarming and heartrending journey of about a year in the life of these packs of animals, through love, loss, pain and pleasure. Gorgeously shot in high definition, African Cats is essentially a televised National Geographic segment. It is delightful to behold thanks to breathtaking photography that captures the beauty of the country and a simple story that everyone can enjoy. It's also an entertaining way to make a difference; during the first week of its release, a portion of the proceeds from that week's ticket sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to ensure the future of the inhabitants of the African savanna. Literary Luncheon- Recipe for Success BY DAWN C. FITZGERALD On Friday, April 29, 2011 Coakley Middle School sixth graders met with Norwood seniors over literature and lunch to learn from one another at the twelfth annual Literary Luncheon. The concept was based on a similar program that began on the north shore. The idea is simple: students and seniors gather together to discuss literature and learn from one another. Former CMS Librarian Carol Wlodkowski along with current Norwood High School Librarian Beth Goldman thought that Norwood would benefit from this program.

In 1999, they started the Literary Luncheon. “It was small when it started” stated Wlodkowski. She observed after a quick glance around the CMS library, “This is the largest group today.” Approximately forty students and twelve seniors met to discuss the book, “Milkweed” written by Jerry Spinelli. The book is based on a Jewish orphan boy’s survival during WWII in Poland. Students and seniors read the book. Then students wrote out questions to prompt discussion. In addition to their questions, students created board games to coincide with the book.

Planning for the event began in November when CMS teacher Rachel Siegel along with CMS Librarian Cynthia Grabke chose the book. “(We) pick a book to promote discussion between the students and seniors”, said Siegel. “I love seeing the kids interact with the seniors.” Although Siegel helped guide students with their questions, “They came up with great ideas on their own.” In addition to what the children learned in the classroom, two of her students talked to their families about the book. “They take what we’re doing in class and bring it home. This type of lesson sparks a

A special guest at this year’s luncheon was Siegel’s grandmother, Beatrice Carp. “When Rachel asked me, I was delighted to come,” stated Carp. She enjoyed the questions students posed, “They were very probing and very interesting,” she said. Carp truly enjoyed her experience with the CMS sixth grade students, “The students were very well behaved…very respectful to the seniors. I am very impressed.” Sixth grade student Ally Copponi

'Aces in Hole' For Girls Softball It’s one thing to draw an ace in a game of cards but in the case of the Norwood High girl’s softball team, head coach Carol Savino has drawn two aces in pitchers Lauren Duggan and Ali Maloof. Savino calls them her, “aces in the hole.” As her team has improved to 12-0 on the season and has their eyes set on winning a state championship behind a staunch defensive squad that has the ability to shut out any opponent.

score off a top-level opponent. Duggan is not concerned however, “We get the hits when we need to, even if it’s one or two runs, we get what we need,” said the star pitcher. One hitter who is and may carry the offensive load for the Mustangs is shortstop Makenna Lane, who

hit a tape measure home run in the Natick game as well as had a key triple in the Milton game to lead her team. “It doesn’t matter if we win by twenty or we win by one,” said Savino, “if we are playing good softball, I am happy with that.”

“Why we are playing better than everybody else, is because we are playing great D(efense),” said Savino. In Norwood’s 3-2 win over Natick, Ali Maloof took the circle and was as dominate as ever as she went all seven innings scattering five hits and striking out 14 Red and Blue hitters.

Savino praised the defense, especially freshman Emily Kelly who was impressive in her first start behind the plate for the injured Nicole Casey. “She did an awesome job,” said Savino of Kelly’s natural ability to throw out runners and scoop up balls in the dirt, “she is just an athlete.”

Kelly showed off that athleticism when she made a heads up play, by chasing down a runner in a delayed steal and throwing her out at second base to preserve the lead and victory. Duggan, who is the heart and soul of this team and will be attending UConn in the fall on a softball scholarship, pitched brilliantly in her one-hit shutout over Milton.

GE Profile 4 Cubic Foot Extra Large Capacity Energy Star Qualified

Duggan who defeated Milton earlier this year, but admittedly didn’t pitch her best game, responded her second time around to strike out 14 Milton batters and more impressively didn’t walk a batter all night. “The first game I pitched against them I wasn’t that good, “ said Duggan,” so going into this game I really wanted to show my team, and myself, that who they saw in the beginning of the season is not who I am.” There has been talk that this team has difficulty scoring runs and that they don’t have the power of last year’s undefeated team. Some are even concerned that the Mustangs may struggle in the tournament to

The Norwood High baseball team is heading into the final weeks of May hoping to clinch a playoff berth in the MIAA Tournament for June. “We’ve got our work cut out for ourselves,” said manager James Sweeney, “ we have got six games to go and we need to take four of

strikes.” With the Mustangs trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Perriello was able to rip a single to right, off Flyer pitcher Rob Averill, who was coming off a shut out of Dedham just last week. With Perriello on first, outfielder

Morrison at the plate. The fact was, Morrison wasn’t showing bunt, as the infielders ran toward the plate except for the second baseman, who headed to second for a pickoff attempt of Periello. Periello froze and the Flyers had an easy out at second except their second baseman couldn’t handle the Averill throw, and the ball trickled into the outfield. Perriello moved up to third on the botched attempt, and now Norwood had the tying run ninety-feet away.

The (6-8) Mustangs need to get to 10 wins before their season concludes, and fortunately they head into that stretch with a huge momentum builder against Framingham where the boys in blue came back in the ninth inning to get a 32 walk-off win against the Flyers.

“We waited till the last minute and it worked out,” commented Sweeney, “ this was a huge game for us, not just for today but for the rest of the year.”

“This is huge, gives us some breathing room, and gives us some momentum going into a big couple of weeks,” said Sweeney. In the win against the Flyers, Sweeney called up sophomore Kenny Michael of the JV team to bolster a tired starting rotation, and he responded beautifully. Michaels gave up a couple of hits in the first which led to a run, but settled down to go 7 innings, allowing four hits and striking out five in a no-decision. “He kept us in the ball game, “ said Sweeney, “ and he threw

The Mustangs face Dedham and Wellesley at the end of May, and both promise to be tough opponents for this young Mustang team. Ryan Conley bunted in hopes of moving Perriello over to second. However, the Flyer third baseman couldn’t pick up the ball, and both runners were on with no outs. The Flyers then reached into their bag of tricks to create a diversion play. With Perriello at second with a healthy lead, the Flyer infield yelled bunt with Norwood’s Billy

In the mean time this game will go down as one that may have turned the Mustang season around and got them headed in the right direction. “They knew it in the ninth inning, and they made it happen. I give them all the credit in the world,” added Sweeney.

2011 Norwood TONY Award Recipient: Cory Hodson The Norwood TONY (Ten Outstanding Norwood Youths) Awards were initiated over 40 years ago to recognize exceptional Norwood youths for their voluntary contribution to the community. Through anonymous reviews of the student's volunteer record and a 300word essay, the Norwood Masons, who acquired the program 16 years ago, named the 2011 TONY Award winners at a banquet held January 24. The award includes a citation and plaque from the governor, a $1,000 savings bond and a gift card from Perk's coffeehouse. Two supplementary awards also include an additional $500 savings bond.

These activities, as well as many others, were likely influential factors for his recognition and 2011 Norwood TONY Award. "Xaverian helps to find the commonality of those; serving the community and personal and spiritual reflection. "Hodson said. "I believe one without the other is a little empty." At Xaverian, this charitable senior now gives back and enlightens his underclassmen with his experiences and demonstrates the importance of sharing an education and personal knowledge as a team leader in the 'Spirit Hawk Program,' a course he himself participated in for three years. Once a week and on two, two-day retreats, he facilitated small groups of students for prayer and discussion on current events. This past year, he was also invited as a facilitator in a sponsorship retreat in West Hartford, CT he attended in his junior

Seventeen year-old Cory Hodson received much more than a quality education at Xaverian Brothers High School. During his years at the private Westwood institution, he discovered a heightened understanding of personal spirituality that matured and was nurtured through the school's classes and programs and its academic and communal culture. "I have grown in my faith tremendously since being at

year that focuses on community and leadership. In his local community, Hodson also shares his athletic skills on the baseball diamond. For the past three years, he has been a coach for a Norwood Little League team. "I have met a lot of outstanding people and it gives me a better perspective of the town I live in, which is important," Hodson said. Hodson will attend Loyola University in Maryland in the fall and expects to pursue a major in theology, with a focus on education. His long-term future goals? He would love to dedicate his career to the organization that has had such a profound influence on his life. "I would love to come back to Xaverian," Hodson said. home M A R K E T P L A C E The FHA Loan In 1934, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) was created by the National Housing Act for the primary purpose of insuring long-term residential mortgage loans and, thereby, promoting home ownership in the United States. Today, the FHA is the largest government insurer of mortgages in the world. FHA loans have surged in popularity. In 2005, government-backed

FHA loans represented about 2.8% of total loans originated. Today, the number is closer to 30%. Over the past couple of years, as credit standards tightened, FHA loans have become the loan of choice for many homebuyers. Contributing to the popularity of FHA loans is that the maximum loan amount limit has increased from $417,000 to as much as

$729,750, depending on the county in which the home is located. Also, if you qualify for a loan, the loan-to-value (LTV) ratios are potentially higher than those for conventional mortgage loans. With FHA loans, a buyer can borrow up to 96.5% of the value of a home. The potential for a higher LTV also makes FHA loans an attractive option for homeowners wanting to refinance. And FHA loans come with fixed mortgage rates providing stable payments over the life of the loan.

Also, FHA closing costs can be financed into the total amount of the mortgage. Traditionally, FHA mortgages were used to assist first-time homebuyers who may not have otherwise qualified for a loan. But FHA loans are no longer just for first-time homebuyers. They are increasingly used by move-up buyers. The only restriction is that a purchaser may have only one FHA loan at a time.

“Thriller – Spiller – Filler” Brings Joy to Victoria Haven Even as the rain fell, guests arrived at Victoria Haven Nursing Facility on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 for the Healthy Breakfast and demonstration on container gardening. Donna Lane of Lane Inte-

riors and Gardens, was knowledgeable and easy to understand as she presented several plants and the simplicity of container gardening. Containers can be used for all types of gardening. Pretty flowers, tasty herbs and fresh vegetables can be planted and maintained hanging on the porch, bordering the driveway, or in the backyard. By planting in your own containers, you can show your personality and creativity as well as save

money from the pre-potted look alike options for sale at many big box stores. Donna explained how to choose the best type of container for size and purpose. She talked about the soil and fertilizer nutrients that change by repotting from the standard growing pot to the container vessel. She also talked about style and function. One phrase she used was “thriller, spiller, filler” as a method for making each container more attractive. In less than an hour, Donna transformed three empty pots into a gorgeous hanging plant, a beautiful container, and a functional and refreshing herb garden including cherry tomatoes. For more information or advice about gardening, please contact Donna Lane at (781) 255-9597 and for more information about the services available at Victoria Haven Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility please call 781762-0858.
