GET THAT GLOW – d k p !

Carla Chambers, Senior Skincare Therapist at Younique Aesthetics Clinic in Belfast, reveals five ways to maintain radiant skin during lockdown. 3. ADD HYDRATION IN LAYERS Hydration is the key to unlocking radiant skin, so investing in effective hydrating serums and moisturisers is absolutely key. One of my favourites at this time of year is the Alumier MD Ultimate boost Serum. This is a lightweight serum that hydrates the skin with antiaging benefits. Packed full of amazing ingredients such as sodium hyaluronate and niacinamide. This is very popular serum in the Belfast Clinic and as many of my patients would agree, it’s a musthave for your skincare routine!

4. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER This is a simple rule for radiant healthy skin which is often forgotten about. The benefits of drinking the recommended daily amount of water (2.7 litres for adult women) are endless. Why not replace your daily coffee with a pint of water? Another tip I got that helped me was to try and take 1.5 litres before 12 noon and sip the rest of the day.

These skills were gained from being in the salon and around my amazing creative team who have guided her along the way. My son Desmond helped with the artistic direction and took the image which we have used - skills again picked up from accompanying us on shoots and shows. My children wanted to contribute to me making a personal piece of art for their granny. Sometimes actions speak louder than words and my mum knows how I work. “So, what have you been up to?” If I promise to stop asking you this, will you stop asking me? Because, for the last few months the answer has been the same - and for the foreseeable future, I can’t see any change. I’m not doing anything, nothing at all - unless watching Netflix and making excuses not to go for a walk count as activities!

Editor Kim Kelly enjoying Linwoods Crunchy Seed Clusters

Perhaps it’s because of the endless boredom of lockdown that I did a terrible thing – I box dyed my hair! Well, in fact I box bleached my hair. I would like to personally apologise to every hairdresser who has ever advertised in Local Women. I now realise that your job is much more technical than I thought. You are complete experts and professionals. You told me not to do it – but I ignored you and went ahead. Now I have ginger roots and my hair is the texture of straw – whoops! It’s going to be one heck of a job to fix when lockdown ends. In the meantime, there’s always hats! I’m really enjoying all your lockdown weddings – you will see a few in this month’s magazine. There’s something so lovely about people who get married during these difficult times. It really brightens up the dark days. I know your weddings are smaller than you planned but they are still beautiful and memorable, and I just love seeing your pictures and hearing your stories. Keep sending in your pictures, we print every wedding or civil partnership you send us. Finally, this month, in preparation for ‘normal life’ resuming I decided to get healthy, after realising that a diet of McDonalds and Domino’s really isn’t doing me any favours. Luckily Linwoods came to my rescue with their new range of Crunchy Seed Clusters. These are healthy ‘toppers’ packed full of goodness which you can pour over your cereal, porridge or yoghurt. They come in three delicious varieties, Flaxseed and Cranberries, Pumpkin and Chia Seed and Flaxseed and Nuts. They are a great way to start the day and have great healthy benefits as well as tasting great. Until next month,

CREATING FAMILIES WITH ACTION FOR CHILDREN

Have you ever thought about becoming a foster parent? Action for Children would like to hear from you and is here to support your journey every step of the way. Every year, Action For Children helps scores of children across Northern Ireland find safe and loving foster homes. But the need for foster carers has never been greater with many children of all ages currently in care waiting to find placements. Avery Bowser is Children’s Services Manager with Action for Children’s fostering service in Northern Ireland and he is proud of the work the organisation does to match young people with carers and support them on their journey. He is keen to encourage a new generation of foster carers to open their hearts and homes to children who need love and stability. Avery explains: “We need carers from all walks of life. Is this something you could do? Do you know someone who would be a good foster carer?

kinds of foster parents. “As long as you are over 21, have a spare room and the motivation to become a carer, we can consider your application.” Avery is keen to stress that there are many different types of placements available. Some children need a full-time home, others need a few days per month support, while some may need a place to stay just for a short time. Sometimes young mums need a home where they can live with their baby and receive support or perhaps siblings need a placement where they can live together. Some children need to be the only child in the house or sometimes they will flourish being part of a traditional family group.

Avery explains: “Fostering with Action for Children is very flexible, and we work closely “There are still many myths about foster with potential carers to ensure you get the “Our aim is simply to create families for caring - people may think that perhaps you best match. children and, as we know, families come in can’t be a single mum or dad, or you can’t “We offer training and support to start you be gay, or in full time work, or have pets or all different shapes and sizes. on a journey that I know will be rewarding.” your own children. “FOSTERING IS THE BEST THING I’VE DONE”

Nicky Peachey considered fostering for many years until she eventually took the plunge and applied to Action for Children. Now she is a foster mum to a little boy and says it’s the most wonderful and rewarding experience. When Carrickfergus woman Nicky Peachey first met her foster son, it was immediately clear to her that this was a perfect match.

to overnights and then a weekend visit. “By the time he was ready to move in with me, we knew each other well and it wasn’t a difficult transition. The support I was offered from Action for Children was second to none. I know people worry that they will be thrown in at the deep end, but this is not the case at all. My social worker is nothing short of amazing.”

After months of training and preparation by Action for Children to become a foster parent, Nicky was matched with an eight-year-old boy – however, despite her delight, she was a little nervous about what lay ahead. But she says she felt an immediate connection with the little boy who had been carefully matched with her, taking both her and her soon-to-be foster son’s individual circumstances into account.

All children’s circumstances are unique, some stay with foster carers close to their home, others move to a new area for a fresh start. Some retain links with their birth families while others aren’t in regular contact with their birth parents.

Her social worker at Action for Children had worked closely with her foster son’s social worker to ensure the best fit possible for both mum and son – and their painstaking work paid off.

In Nicky’s case, her son changed schools when he came to live with her, although he only got one term at his new school before lockdown meant she now homeschools him.

Nicky explains: “It was the strangest thing but absolutely wonderful. I met him and we just clicked, and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, he even looks like me!’

Before lockdown Nicky was self-employed as a personal trainer, something she will continue when the restrictions end.

“I can honestly say this is the best thing I ƒ Nicky says fostering is the best have ever done. I have been good for thing she’s ever done him and he has been good for me. Since I have been a foster mum, I have learned The fact that Nicky was on her own and so much. Age, marital status, or sexuality are no barrier to being a good foster parent - in fact sometimes applicants who aren’t in a relationship can be the perfect match for a particular child’s needs.

They both quickly adapted to their new lives and enjoyed getting to know each other. Nicky has an extended family who have welcomed her foster son with open arms, and they have spent the last few months making happy memories together. Nicky says: “Probably the standout for me was Christmas. We did the whole Christmas experience from hot chocolate and pajamas on Christmas Eve to Santa on Christmas Day. It was just fantastic, and I definitely enjoyed it as much as he did.” The future is bright for Nicky and her foster son. He is thriving in his new environment, doing well with his schoolwork, and building relationships with his new family. He still has contact with his birth family and enjoys visits every few weeks. For Nicky fostering is a “no brainer!” And she says that if you have ever thought about it, now is the time to go for it.

“You don’t have to be married, or wealthy or a certain age. All kinds of foster carers are needed. All you need is the desire to share “First, I came over for a visit, then another your life and the ability to listen. day I took him for ice cream. Not long after that, I came over for dinner. VICTORIA PATTERSON

A LIFE IN STYLE With her innate sense of style, a down-to-earth work ethic and a sprinkling of glamour, Victoria Patterson is in high demand to create beautiful interiors.

Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life! That’s how the saying goes and stunning property developer and interior designer Victoria Patterson is definitely living (and working) the dream. Heading up Design by Mayfair, part of the successful Mayfair Group, the glamourous 26year-old, simply adores her job. Interior design is Victoria’s passion, and she has worked on projects across the world, creating beautiful homes and commercial spaces. Victoria certainly doesn’t struggle with a work/ life balance as her career and homelife blend seamlessly together. She enjoys her work so much that even when she is on exotic holidays (pre-Covid of course) she takes design inspiration from everything 14 | Local Women Magazine

she sees and from the cultural influences surrounding her.

In the past year, because of the pandemic, Victoria has been focussing on projects closer to home and she has enjoyed the opportunity to bring her unique brand of style to some gorgeous developments here in Northern Ireland. Although she is known for her trademark glamour, Victoria definitely isn’t scared of getting her hands dirty and can often be found make-up free on a building site with a hard hat and hi-vis jacket. With her blend of innate style and class mixed with a down-to-earth work ethic, it’s no wonder that Victoria’s services are so in demand. Let’s meet this stylish lady and find out more

about her design for life.

WE HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH THE MAYFAIR GROUP IN LOCAL WOMEN AND IT SOUNDS SUPER EXCITING. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH SO FAR? I went straight into the working world after my A levels. I was always planning to go to university and was accepted to some great institutions, however there was an opportunity to get into the hospitality sector and that’s what I did. I managed multiple nightclubs, restaurants and bars in Northern Ireland. My flagship was The Coach Nightclub where we hosted some of the top DJs in the world and I loved every minute of it. It was a great industry to spend your early 20s in and it was fantastic. I got to

go to the top festivals in the world and meet some incredible people. I feel like not going to university was one of the best decisions for me, and I’m happy with my choices. The pressure to attend university is overwhelming and I’m glad I stuck to my guns.

YOU HAVE WORKED ON SOME AMAZING PROPERTIES, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM HOUSE? A seafront property in Malibu Beach. I have spent a lot of time in California, and it is my dream one day to live there.

DESCRIBE AN AVERAGE WORKDAY? There isn’t one! Each day is exhilarating. One day I’m visiting future sites, another day I’m planning beautiful interiors or the next it can be a conference call for our future energy company. We are involved in many different businesses which definitely keeps it interesting. I try to rise around 6am and finish most of my meetings by early afternoon.

WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN WORK? Truthfully, from travelling. I have seen some incredible developments and properties abroad. We have the best team of architects, but the interiors are always from trade shows, hotels and world class properties. It’s surprising what a little bit of imaginative lighting and panelling can add.

I IMAGINE THAT BECAUSE OF THE CREATIVE NATURE OF YOUR WORK, YOU ARE CONSTANTLY WORKING – HOW DO YOU COMBINE WORK LIFE AND HOME LIFE? I work closely with my family, so work and home life tend to blend together. I find my relaxing time on holiday where I’m exploring new parts of the world.

WITH SUCH A BUSY LIFE, DO YOU HAVE TIME FOR A RELATIONSHIP? I was in a long-distance relationship for a while before my partner moved over to Northern Ireland from Australia. We met while travelling in Croatia and the rest is history. It was quite a change for both of us, especially with the lockdown, but we’re very happy and so excited for the future.

HOW DO YOU UNWIND AT HOME? With a warm bath and a large bottle of wine, however a Netflix binge with Domino’s pizza also goes down a treat!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love skiing and horse riding, anything sporty really. I like to invest a lot of time in different charity work. I have been a member of the young professional committee of Northern Ireland for the past four years and we have raised over £60k for Mencap. A big personal goal of mine is to get my private pilot’s licence.

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP? We are about to close on two exciting new sites which I am eager to talk about - but can’t for now! We have fantastic Edinburgh projects which are currently in for planning. These range from high end luxury apartments to family communities, but most exciting recently is our new energy company that is launching in September 2021. We are excited to get into the renewable sector as feel this is the future but also what we are helping for the greater good of the planet.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN PROJECT TO DATE? That’s like asking who your favourite child is! To be honest, whichever project I’m working on

at the time tends to be my favourite. When the next exciting one comes along, that’s my new favourite - just like Bruce Forsythe on Strictly. I have to say though that our Cultra and Moira 1 developments are pretty special.

SOME READERS MIGHT GET THE IMPRESSION THAT INTERIOR DESIGNERS ARE EXPENSIVE AND MAYBE OUT OF THEIR PRICE RANGE – WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BENEFITS OF EMPLOYING A DESIGNER? By and large, the impression of interior designers by the general public is someone who is going to cost you a great deal of money, change your ideas and may leave you with an interior that you didn’t want in the first place. These companies do exist but thankfully there are a not representative of the entire industry. A good designer will save you money, listen to what you want, use some of your favourite pieces and want to leave you with a home that reflects you and not them. Design By Mayfair was created to offer an affordable package for our new build developments by The Mayfair Group. Due to our connections, we work directly with factories cutting out the middlemen.

IF A STUDENT WANTED TO ENTER THE PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT OR DESIGN WORLD, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM? This goes for many industries but, be eager, and be hungry. Network as much as you can, use all your connections and never be afraid to ask for help - the worst that anyone can say is no. Try and enjoy the journey. THE FARMER’S FOUND A WIFE A firm friendship turned to love for St Vincent de Paul members Henry O’Loan from Glenravel and Clare Gilmore form Kircubbin, who got married 12 years after first meeting.

U

ndeterred by the latest lockdown, Henry O’Loan and Clare Gilmore celebrated their wedding in January in front of a select number of family and friends.

Henry and Clare on their wedding day

Despite the limitations imposed by lockdown, I followed the desire of my heart and popped the question four months ago,” says Henry who grew up in a farm in Glenravel, Ballymena. After two years of courtship, Henry said he “found it became increasingly difficult to spend time away from Clare” as he realised they shared so much in common and he could not bear the thought of another lockdown without her by his side. Both members of St Vincent de Paul, Henry and Clare met while participating in an adult faith development course in Drumalis Retreat Centre in Larne back in 2008. Veterinary surgeon Henry says he first noticed Clare’s tattoos and piercings but while facilitating a small group on the course he got to know her better and says: “I was struck by her breadth of knowledge and considerate approach to others.” Clare, who is originally from the Ards Peninsula, near Kircubbin, had left Northern Ireland to study at university in Dublin. 12 years later she returned north noticing Henry on the first day they met at the development course in 2008 but said: “I just assumed he was already taken so thought no more of it.” Having marked her as ‘one to watch’ when Clare came to his parish to help run a youth group, Henry’s sister suggested he teach her to dance. Their friendship developed over Salsa classes but Henry attributes the nuns in Drumalis as helping Cupid because they often tried, along with other friends, to matchmake the couple. They enjoyed each other’s company at SVP Christmas galas, Salsa balls and nights out at QFT. As their friendship developed, Henry and Clare enjoyed weekends in Dublin and Donegal and a trip to Norway for Clare’s birthday. After returning from Norway Henry says he ‘bit the bullet’ and asked Clare if they could enter a romantic relationship. He said: “It was a risk, if it worked – wonderful, if it didn’t – then would it ruin the fabulous motion that we would connect. It is the depth of conversation and sharing of life’s meaning in those in between years that have made friendship we had built? our relationship as strong and as deep as it is now. The influence of Fr “Our first date took place in Drumalis, and Clare reminds me I ended Perry Gildea, a Vincentian friend, has been keen in our development up being over an hour late. When I eventually turned up to see Clare, and growth both as individuals and as a couple. It was a relief that she was willing to put others before us, as local community.” the work of SVP is very important.” Currently living in Larne, now that the farmer has found a wife, animal says: “Although we entered a relationship two years ago, when we’re loving Henry and his wife Clare, who is a Personal Secretary in Braid asked how long we’ve been together, I think the answer is really 12 Valley Hospital, plan to move back to Glenravel soon to pursue their years because that’s when the embers first began and God set in love of farming and enjoy the lambing season. 16 | Local Women Magazine

AUSTRALIA'S MOST WANTED SEE OUR REVIEW OF THIS WINE ON PAGE 95

SAUVIGNON BLANC

This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley Eastern Australia from our own vineyards. Following delivery and crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Sauvignon Blanc juice was cold settled and racked. An aromatic yeast was used for inocculation and this parcel was cool fermented for 7 days. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant showing lovely tropical fruit flavours with a hint of typical herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc characters.

CHARDONNAY

The fruit for the Kelly’s Patch Chardonnay was sourced from the Goulburn Valley on the vineyards neighbouring the winery. This region has long, warm sunny days and mild evening temperatures which are perfect for the growing of good quality Chardonnay. The grapes were harvested during the cool of the night to maintain fruit freshness and gently pressed to minimise phenolic characters. The wine was fermented in various parcels, with a small portion receiving careful oak treatment, with extended lees contact to build structure yet retain good fruit balance.

PINOT GRIGIO

This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley and South East Australia from a combination of our own vineyards and our contract growers. Following crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Pinot Grigio juice is cold settled and racked clean ready for fermentation. An aromatic yeast was used for inoculation and the juice is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant displaying applesand pears with floral spicy notes. The palate is clean, displaying green crunchy fruit with a crisp long finish.

MERLOT

The grapes for this Merlot were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout. Much of Merlot’s popularity is derived from its juicy flavours, and mellow mouth feel. Therefore, this wine was fermented in rotary fermenters, which helped bring out the wonderful colour and flavours, but ensured that the tannins were soft and fine. Minimal oak handling was also an important feature inclusion of the winemaking allowing for the fruit to be the primary feature of this wine. The of some central Victorian fruit in the blend has further intensified both the colour and flavour, creating a wine of increased complexity and quality.

SHIRAZ

The grapes for this Shiraz were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout, all of which help to create the signature McPherson style. Fermentation took place in sweeping arm red fermenters, giving the wine a denser, richer colour and allowing for gentle flavour extraction. Softer tannins are also a result of this process, an important feature of the McPherson Shiraz style. Careful attention was also paid to the oak selection for the Shiraz. This wine was aged on American oak for approximately 8 months, giving the wine a noticeable, but not an excessive oak influence. The inclusion of some central Victorian fruit into the blend has boosted both the colour.

KELLY’S GANG SHIRAZ

Kelly’s Gang Shiraz is bold and full of flavour. The nose displays sweet plums, cassis, chocolate and spice. The exuberant palate delivers ripe berry fruit along with a touch of pepper and spice. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 3-4 years. Enjoy with pizza, pasta or your favourite BBQ dish.

KELLY’S GANG SAUVIGNON BLANC

Kelly’s Gang Sauvignon Blanc is vibrant and refreshing. The nose displays lifted passionfruit and citrus notes. “WE ARE LIKE ONE BIG FAMILY” Local Women meets talented sports star Louise Toner from Ballymacnab, Co Armagh who credits playing camogie for teaching her the discipline, motivation, and determination to succeed in life.

L

ouise Toner has had more than her fair share of success on the pitch.

Playing for the senior team at St Brenda’s Camogie Club, Ballymacnab and on the Armagh County Senior team, Louise has won an Ulster championship as well as an all-Ireland title. She readily admits that her life revolves around the sport she loves and says it has taught her discipline and determination, which she credits with her success in all aspects of her life. Now working as a Prescribing Pharmacist, the 30-year-old was just 10 when she first started playing and she is involved in all aspects of her club from playing, to coaching and committee work. Pre-covid she was training, playing matches or at meetings for a couple of hours a night, six nights a week – it’s no wonder she’s missing it so much! Louise can’t wait to get back to proper training and get back out playing matches. And she wants to reach out to other women to get involved in their local clubs. She says: “The togetherness and camaraderie are the best things about being part of a team and a club. It’s like being one massive family.”

WHAT WINS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Winning an Ulster championship with my club was a very proud moment in my camogie career as this was the first time in our club’s history, we won an Ulster title. In 1992 our club got to an Ulster final and were narrowly beaten in the replay by Portglenone, so we needed to win this to get rid of the heartache associated with this defeat. A lot of the girls who played on this team had mums who were part of that ‘92 team. We owed those women an Ulster title. A close second was captaining the same team in 2020 to win a county championship title (unfortunately due to Covid-19 there was no Ulster competition, so we were not able to progress to provincial level). I was delighted to be able to lift the trophy on behalf of the girls I have played with from underage right through to senior level.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST SUCCESSES? My greatest camogie success to date is winning an All-Ireland title with my county in 2020. It was a strange year in team sports due to covid-19 restrictions and we were apprehensive that the sporting year wouldn’t reach the All-Ireland stages, so we were delighted to end the uncertain year as All-Ireland Champions. This was a special win for us as a lot of girls were on the Armagh team that reached the All-Ireland final in 2016 and were narrowly piped at the post that day. There were a lot of regrets that day in Croke Park coming home runners up knowing Armagh should have won. So, when Armagh got the chance again of lifting this title, we grabbed it with both hands. 20 | Local Women Magazine

HOW HAS YOUR TRAINING BEEN OVER LOCKDOWN? We aren’t allowed to train collectively unfortunately. We are so used to training as a team that it’s hard to keep everyone motivated to train individually and via Zoom classes. Also, when you train as a team everyone is more competitive and pushes themselves to their limits.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING CAMOGIE? I started to play camogie when I was in primary school aged 10 years old. I was probably a late starter in comparison to all my friends (who started to play before they turned six years old) but we (my sister and two brothers) were reared on a farm and it was more important for us to be helping around home with sheep lambing and bailing hay. All our friends at Foley Primary School were mad about camogie and we were getting to play blitzes in school which gave us the taste for it. Our parents saw my sister Catherine and I had an interest so took us to play for St Brenda’s Camogie Club in Ballymacnab.

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST MATCH? When I was underage the managers always played me in the goalkeeper position, and I used to hate it because I wanted to be more involved in the outfield play. So, for my first match I was playing in goals and was so afraid when the ball came close to me. Imagine being a 10-year-old, standing in these massive goals (almost three times your height) and a small hard sliotar has been hit in your direction and is coming at high speed straight for you. So, my first game was a frightening experience for me! That said, it didn’t put me off. I persevered and got to play outfield not long after that, thankfully.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT AS A CHILD? As a child playing camogie was a brilliant experience. Not only did you get to go away on trips with your friends to play blitzes, but you got to have so much fun at every training session with the girls you grew up with. As an underage player the sport is very much based on enjoyment to keep the children interested so we always ended the training sessions with a fun game, and everyone went home smiling. I can whole heartedly say camogie was (as a kid) and still is thoroughly enjoyable to play. It teaches kids discipline, respect, determination, social and people skills, team-working skills, the list is endless really. I give all the credit to playing camogie for my success in all aspects of life.

HOW BIG A PART DOES SPORT PLAY IN YOUR LIFE? Sport plays a massive part in my life. I currently play senior camogie for both my club and county. So that involves training and playing matches (pre-covid times) five or six days a week for one or two hours. That alone explains how much my life is based around sport. You don’t just turn up to training and matches, a lot of background preparation goes into every match. I am constantly thinking about

the meals I am eating, ensuring I am eating the correct foods and drinking enough water for the sessions I am planning on doing. Prior to matches there is a lot of psychological preparation. I feel your mind-frame going into matches is very important. You have done all the preparation leading up to matches so you are ready physically and it’s important your head is in the right place. I also referee underage matches and occasionally train the under 10s in my club. I am also part of my club’s committee which involves attending meetings about all aspects of the club and constantly trying to ensure the smooth running of the club, as well as coming up with new initiatives on how to better the club.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING PART OF A CLUB? The togetherness and camaraderie. It’s like being one massive family. It’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t play team sports but that’s the only way I can put it into words. When you are young you are brought to this football pitch by your parents and given a camogie stick and

helmet. The experience you get at this football pitch during your childhood doesn’t come close to any play park you have ever been to as a child. You have hours of fun playing camogie with your best friends (in all weathers) and you all grow together into adulthood. The girls I play with in my club, I see them as my sisters. We all go through different life experiences and we support one another through the highs and lows of life. Unfortunately, my daddy passed away last year as a result of aggressive cancer and the GAA family were absolutely amazing helping us through those tough times. Everyone helps each other and wants to see the best for one another.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO PLAYED CAMOGIE IN SCHOOL AND IS LOOKING TO GET BACK INTO IT? 100 per cent do it! You will not regret it for one second. It’s a brilliant way for someone who maybe hasn’t played camogie competitively for a while to get back into it. You will feel great for getting out to exercise and you won’t realise the amount of calories you are burning as you will have so much fun! Local Women Magazine | 21

Joanna Denton

Find your people –

but choose them well

After suffering two work-related burnouts, Joanna Denton became a business mentor, helping others who are experiencing struggles at work. Each month Joanna will use her expertise to help you with any business-related problems you may be experiencing in these uncertain times. Dear Joanna, I am a solopreneur running an online marketing business. Business is going ok, but I am finding it really lonely. There are so many decisions to make, so much stress as I try to scale and grow, and I don’t have anyone I can really talk to. When I mention any business challenges to my parents, they just tell me, “oh, it will all work out”, which just annoys me; I’m sad and resentful because my friends just whinge about not being able to go out to the pub during lockdown, and they don’t care what is going on in my life; and my peers don’t want to help because they are competitors. I just have no one around who I can share this stuff with. What can I do?

Nicola

Dear Nicola,

Thank you for sharing what is going on. I really do understand how it feels to think you have the weight of the world on your shoulders and no one to share it with. And it can be really tempting to try to just unload what you are feeling to the nearest person, and then get frustrated and sad when you think they don’t want to listen. Take a deep breath, we got this. As a business owner, it is so important to find the people who will support you – but you do need to choose those people well. Perhaps your parents, pub going friends and direct competitors are not the right people. Sometimes it is better to accept that, then go out and find those who are.

What support are you looking for? Who is best equipped to provide this? I wonder – what support are you really looking for? In your email, you talked about having “someone to talk to”, and I am curious to know more about that. When you can be clear on the support you need, it will be easier to identify who can provide it.

Here are some first suggestions which may resonate. Create your inner circle for emotional support Let’s think first about getting emotional support – someone to hold the space for you and just listen. Not

22 | Local Women Magazine

try to fix anything or compete with you over who is more stressed. Just listen.

Perhaps a business mentor or coach can provide the sounding board you need

Who are the one or two people in your life you can really count on? That’s your inner circle, and they don’t actually need to know anything about business, they just need to have your back.

Or perhaps you are looking for a sounding board to talk through business ideas, brainstorm solutions, and work on implementation together, and all this on a longer-term basis?

Remember, no one is telepathic – reach out to them on a one-to-one basis, really ask for the support you need, and have the confidence that they will step up to the plate. Remember any one can miss the mark in giving support if they don’t know what is needed.

Tap into local networks for logistical and practical support Perhaps you are looking for logistical, professional or practical support and advice, such as identifying where to find financial or government support? What are the networks in your area who provide this kind of information? During the pandemic local Chambers of Commerce and networks like Women in Business have come into their own in keeping their members up to speed on what support is available. There are others out there too. Joining such a network will also open doors to other entrepreneurs and business owners who will be willing to share their experiences.

Have you considered getting a business coach or mentor to work on these things together? Having someone on your side whose job it is to guide you in the development of your business is worth every penny you might pay to have their help. I hope that this has been helpful. Remember, you don’t have to do this alone – just get clear on what you need, and who is the best placed to provide it.

Positively Annie Local Women columnist Annie Finnegan from Newry returns with news that, after a battle with chronic pain and a struggle with infertility, she is expecting her first baby. Hi all, Some of you regular readers might recognise my column from a few years back when I took you all on my journey through an unexplained illness and my diagnosis of a rare auto-inflammatory condition called Familial Mediterranean Fever. Not many people are aware of this condition, so just to explain here are the symptoms it causes fever, abdominal pain, achy swollen joints, and general unwellness. All these symptoms are systematic, meaning I suffered for around a week every month (some episodes being worse than others and caused hospitalisation and ultimately being resuscitated twice). After two and a half long years, I was finally diagnosed, and medication made life as normal as I had known. This all started when I was 17 and I am now 23 and in the prime of my life. What could possibly go wrong? I have been with my partner Gavin from the age of 17 and after five years together, last year we bought our first home, which we absolutely adore. After moving in together my mind automatically turned towards the next stages in our relationship marriage and children. After a regular routine appointment with my doctor, I had asked her would there be any affects of my medical condition on my fertility. She advised me to get my fertility checked - something that I didn’t realise at the time I would be forever grateful for. The outcome of this appointment was worse than I could have ever imagined. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), the most common endocrine disorder in women of a reproductive age, along with being the most common cause of infertility in women. My medical condition also meant that I had quite a lot of inflammation in my womb. I was advised that I would never be able to have my own child and even if I did conceive it would be dangerous for me to become pregnant due to this inflammation. My heart sank to the floor, how was I going to tell my partner who I knew longed to be a father someday, how could I tell my family, how could I go through life with no child to call my own? For those of you who know me, you know that I work with children for a living, running my Stage School, Broadway Babies along with my sister and also

24 | Local Women Magazine

working privately with autistic children, so children are a huge part of my life. I became overwhelmed by everything; it came to the point where even small tasks made me break down and cry. I began to suffer from panic attacks. With the support of my partner and close family I woke up one day and decided to fight. I booked into a specialist fertility clinic to explore our options. Along with my fertility doctor we devised a plan, this included lifestyle changes and a very strict diet (literally a fish, vegetable and plant-based diet). I followed every step rigidly. She had mentioned that if I had any chance of conceiving myself, it would be now due to finding out my situation at a young age and I was prepared to do whatever it took. I am grateful for the fact that I went and had that fertility check when I did. My diet and lifestyle changes dramatically improved the inflammation in my body which was my main fertility problem. After a few months of strictly following my plan, I started to feel unwell. So, I decided to do a pregnancy test. My hands were sweaty, my heart was racing - and there it was… ‘PREGNANT’, I closed my eyes and looked at it again, ‘PREGNANT’. So, in disbelief I did four more pregnancy tests. The main message behind my story is the importance of fertility checks. My doctor strongly believes that if I hadn’t had my fertility check at the age of 23 and I had continued on with my life as normal, I would never have had this amazing experience of carrying my own child. I would have left it until my late 20s and by then it would have been too late. Read next month’s article to follow my journey through pregnancy. Feel free to follow me on Instagram for daily updates on my pregnancy journey and lifestyle on @ anniefinneganxx Lots of love,

Annie xx

COVID-19 had a huge impact on my business because of all the restrictions, but we have adapted, did health and safety training and continue to work safely within these regulations. “The pandemic has had a detrimental effect on loads of businesses and sadly a lot of people

As spring has sprung, Local Women asked Bobbie for a few cleaning tips to get our houses gleaming. If you are a person who hates doing housework, can you grow to love it? No. You either have it, or you don’t.

HAVING A DIRTY OR MESSY HOUSE CAN MAKE PEOPLE FEEL DOWN OR OVERWHELMED, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR GETTING MOTIVATED?

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRACTICAL CLEANING TIPS? •

Invest in a good microfibre cloth for dusting.

White vinegar is the magic formula and can be used on everything. Glass, mirrors, white and black goods, and it’ll be streak free.

Another good tip is to clean the shower before you get out of it. Put the shampoos, shower-gels etc away and wipe the shower screen before you leave it. When clients leave their bathrooms in a mess, with towels all over the floor I usually fold them up like swans and place them on their bed!

A good tip to get hair out of carpet is to run a window blade over it.

To get rid of pet odours nothing beats fresh air. Open windows for at least 15 minutes a day.

Another great tip is to keep active while you’re boiling the kettle. You could have the kitchen units wiped down or polishing done before you sit down for your cup of tea.

IS THERE ANY PRODUCT OR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

Microfibre glass cloths. They’re great for buffing sinks, taps, glass, mirrors, stainless steel, cookers, microwaves. They’re the best invention ever. No chemicals are required, and they can be used damp or dry. Plus, they’re machine washable.

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GETTING OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD INVOLVED IN KEEPING THE HOUSE CLEAN AND TIDY?

Work off a chore list and praise your kids, even if they’re not cleaning everything to perfection. Show them how to do chores, don’t just expect them to know how to do it properly.

IS HOUSEWORK STILL SEEN AS PREDOMINANTLY WOMEN’S WORK?

Unfortunately, yes, however there are a lot more househusbands and single men who take pride in cleaning their homes. Most couples do work together though and if one of them cooks, the other cleans – a lot of couples share the chores. Some people might feel apprehensive about hiring a cleaner in case other people think they are lazy, what would you say to them? Absolutely not. People are so busy at the minute and when they have free time, they don’t want to waste it cleaning. It’s more important to spend it with your family. Women are working as hard as men now; housewives are things of the past.

DO PEOPLE EVER HIRE A CLEANER AND KEEP IT A SECRET FROM THEIR FAMILY?

I have been in that situation. Actually, a lady who didn’t work hired me to clean ‘as a secret’ while she went to the gym. One day her husband came home when she wasn’t expecting him, and she asked me to come downstairs and have a coffee with her. When her hubby came in, she introduced me as her friend! She’s the type of lady who does lunch instead of doing dishes. Sure, if you can get away with it, fair play! For bookings check out Castlereagh Cleaning Company on Facebook or phone 07738007914. Hazel’s Got The Gift

Local Women Editor Kim Kelly has a reading with psychic medium Hazel McWall from Forkhill with some fascinating results. Pictures by Sean Donegan “Do you believe in this kind of thing?” asks Hazel McWall as we begin our psychic session. I have to think for a minute – I can honestly say that I don’t NOT believe in it. I guess, I’m on the fence. I have never seen a ghost, but I can’t say I don’t believe. On the other hand, the afterlife is a massive part of Hazel’s world. Her parents both had ‘the gift’ and from a young age she could see spirits. Hazel, who lives in Forkhill in Co Armagh, very matter of factly describes herself as a gatekeeper between our world and the spirit world. She stands between the two worlds, the door opens, and spirits reveal themselves to her when she is doing a reading. She explains: “It probably sounds a little crazy to some people, but spirits have been all around me from a very young age, I don’t know a life without them. “Some people I’m sure think I’m mad, others think it is scary, but as I always say – you have nothing to fear from the dead – only the living will harm you.” Over the years Hazel has worked with many people who want to make contact with the deceased. She is happy that she is able to offer them reassurance and says that after a reading it is like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. She has also worked on an informal basis with some police forces on cases that have stalled and has been successful in giving them vital leads. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are speaking over the phone. Hazel introduces herself and quickly dispels any myths I might have about ‘fortune tellers.’ She explains that she is psychic medium and doesn’t need to use cards, tea leaves, a crystal ball or any kind of prop. If you are looking for a spooky, supernatural experience – forget it! With Hazel there is no mystical sounding voice or ghostly language. She sounds like an ordinary woman from Newry and has a very pleasant and engaging manner. In fact, I warm to her immediately – she is so down-to-earth and 28 | Local Women Magazine

Hazel McWall

sounds very kind. Hazel herself says that she operates in a world where there are lots of confidence tricksters. She is well aware of the scepticism that surrounds her gift - but her gift speaks for itself as I will soon see. This reading has been set up by a mutual contact. All Hazel knows is my first name and that I am a writer for the press. Obviously, she could go onto Facebook and search our mutual friend’s contact list and try and find me and crib up on the kind of person I am. But what she is about to tell me isn’t on my Facebook page – there is absolutely no way she could know the things she does about me. I doubt my closest friends know these things – and definitely the person who set this up would not be aware. Hazel explains that she will introduce the people as they appear to her. They don’t always have names, so she describes them to me. First up she sees a grandmother type figure. I immediately assume it is my paternal grandmother to whom I was very close, but no, she says it is my maternal grandmother. She describes an elegant lady who is glamorous and well groomed. She’s standing next to a flower bed and she is wearing a medal round her neck. I immediately recall that my nana Kathleen was a successful lady bowler who won medals for Ireland. I have seen a picture of her …. standing next to a flower bed wearing medals. Nana died when I was 18 months old, so I never knew her, but I have heard about her and know that she was quite an outspoken character – perhaps a touch abrasive, and quite ahead of her time. Hazel says this lady “tells it like it is” and is quite bossy. She also tells me she has a baby boy with her. My mum later confirms that nana had a miscarriage before she was born. I never knew this.

Hazel McWall

I will find happiness with someone I already know who “gets me.” She tells me I wasn’t sure about him at first but he is “my person.” She gives me his initial - I know who she means!

Hazel McWall will appear at Crumlin Road Gaol on April 17 at 9pm. Tickets are available from www.ticketsource. co.uk search Hazel McWall.

Hazel assures me that I will be financially secure, which of course I am Hazel is able to give me details of nana’s ‘fancy hairbrush’ and other small delighted about and tells me I won’t have long to wait for this. details that my mum confirms are correct. She also warns me very strongly about someone about to come into my life Hazel tells me that my nana is the closest person to me in the spirit world and with dyed red hair who will try and do something bad to me. She says I will she is looking out for me. This actually give me a sense of reassurance – nana know who this is as soon as I meet her. was a real no nonsense kind of character – exactly the kind of person you I could honestly talk to Hazel for hours. She invites me to ask her questions and would want on your side. her knowledge of my life is quite uncanny. The level of detail is astonishing. We move on to other topics – Hazel is so matter of fact as she tells me about It is really lovely to talk to her and our hour-long session flies past, leaving me my divorce and about friends and details of a woman I can’t trust and need to feeling a little overwhelmed. be wary off. One week later this comes true. And it’s not just me who is overwhelmed by Hazel’s gift. The next day our She tells me that my best friend is a blonde lady, then she hesitates and says photographer Sean Donegan goes to take Hazel’s picture and she gives him “sandy haired” twice. My best friend is indeed a blonde lady called Sandra – an impromptu reading. He rings me on his way home, buzzing with what she nicknamed Sandy! has told him. Sean is more than a little cynical about this kind of thing but Hazel is able to tell me about my work – she tells me that I don’t work for a Hazel tells him things that he just can’t argue with. WILD ATLANTIC IRISH GIN WINS GOLD AT WORLD GIN AWARDS

A distillery from Aghyaran is celebrating after its debut spirit has been awarded Northern Ireland’s Best Contemporary Gin at the 2021 World Gin Awards. Wild Atlantic Irish Gin was announced as the Country Winner for Northern Ireland in the category of Best Contemporary Gin. The World Gin Awards select the best in all styles of gin and reward and promote the best gins to consumers and trade across the globe. For the first time, the awards were announced virtually in a broadcast streamed online. As a distillery, we set out to create uniquely superior gins and this award is a great reinforcement of that belief. Magnetix Wellness - A natural alternative

Ballymoney’s Karen Acheson say she found relief from her back pain by using Magnetix Wellness jewellery and products - and now she is helping others experience this exciting range of products. For several years Karen Acheson suffered from severe backpain that forced her to take painkillers.

and skin disorders. Karen now has a large customer base all over the UK and both north and south of Ireland and she will always make time to chat to people and discuss the best products for their symptoms.

The Ballymoney woman had been a nurse for almost thirty years and then sustained a broken back after a road traffic accident in 2011.

Her knowledge and expertise come from personal experience, her nursing background and customer testimonials.

She had no choice but to take analgesia including morphine, tramadol and gabapentin and she really wanted to get off these drugs as she was very aware of the side effects.

Since the start of the pandemic last March, Karen has seen a marked increase in the number of people reaching out for her help and keen to try the products.

She tried many therapies and treatments to no avail nothing she did seemed to make a difference. Then her close friend Ann Watson told the Ballymoney woman about Magnetix Wellness. Karen was sceptical but Ann insisted that it had worked for her. Karen eventually tried the Power Heart, which is the strongest magnet within the range.

"I started doing Facebook live talks last March and it has been very successful in raising my business profile as well as bringing me closer to my customers who enjoy hearing about the products and their benefits."

She asked Ann about becoming a consultant as she was actively looking for a change in career and she has never looked back.

Magnetic therapy dates back at least 2,000 years and its popularity has grown immensely over the years. Many people report that they have experienced positive health benefits from this natural method of healing and pain relief.

Karen has been a consultant for almost five years and is now one of the top leaders in the UK with the title of Executive MD.

Karen says : "Magnets are one of nature's many wonders and they simply fascinate me. It is a continually growing complimentary medicine."

Karen's business expanded mainly by word of mouth and satisfied customers telling others. She travelled far and wide and loved being invited to people’s homes and different group gatherings to spread the word about the success and benefits of using Magnetix.

Magnetix Wellness is one of the leading suppliers of magnetic jewellery in the world and they have over ten million customers worldwide.

She was delighted and surprised to tell Ann just a couple of weeks later that she definitely noticed positive results and over the next few months she added to her Magnetix collection with bracelets, earrings and seat pads. Within a few months she was completely off her prescription medication.

She has recruited and trained many people and is always looking to expand her team. Magnetic therapy is a complimentary therapy, and this

SAYING ‘I DO’ IN AN IGLOO

It was a unique proposal for Kilkeel’s Sarah Patterson when she went for a walk up the Mourne Mountains with her boyfriend Graeme Shannon. During lockdown all we seem to do is go for walks. So, when Sarah Patterson, 35, set off on yet another walk with her boyfriend of three years Graeme Shannon, 37, she wasn’t expecting much. The couple from Kilkeel had decided to go for a walk up the Mourne Mountains to Slieve Muck where their friend Stephen Rooney, a local artist and a neighbour had built an igloo during a cold snap. Sarah says: “I decided on the Saturday night that we were both going to go up to see the igloo before it melted. So, on Sunday morning I got our picnic all packed and ready to go. “Just before we set off in the car, Graeme said he had to go in and speak to my daddy, but I never thought anything of it.” Hundreds of walkers flocked to see the igloo over the few days it was there, and the couple had a freezing walk to where it was located. Sarah was expecting to take a few pictures and leave but Graeme had other ideas. “We both went into the igloo and Graeme got down on his knee and proposed. I was completely shocked. “We have talked about marriage before but never in my wildest dreams did I think he would propose to me in an igloo, especially in the Mourne Mountains!” Of course, Sarah said ‘yes’ and when she got back to the car, the first person she rang was Stephen to tell him the good news. He was in complete shock and nearly in tears because he was so happy for them. Sarah says: “Graeme said it was completely a spur of the moment decision. Apparently, we are the first couple in Northern Ireland and probably most of Europe, to get engaged in an igloo, so it’s completely unique. “Graeme has a son called Zack who’s eight years old, so he’s going to be our pageboy along with our nieces and nephews Josh, Pixie, Heidi and Eloise. We have no firm wedding plans at the minute and are just enjoying being engaged!”

Upcycling with The Hidden Treasure Trove

Upcycling is a wonderful way to bring an old piece of furniture to life and at The Hidden Treasure Trove, they have everything you need to get started. From my studio at The Hidden Treasure Trove in Banbridge, I enjoy working on old pieces of furniture and giving them a new lease of life. You can say one person’s trash is another person’s treasure – so, instead of dumping old pieces of mahogany or dark wood furniture that have gone out of fashion but are usually very well-made – simply breathe new life into them by upcycling. I love working with old dressers, nests of tables and dressing tables and making them into beautiful and useful pieces of furniture. I have upcycled pieces that have become pretty side tables, vanity units and even a surround for a sink in a bathroom. I love using William Morris print wallpapers and Frenchic paint to create a stylish look. I enjoy fully restoring furniture and I add a modern twist to every piece - each piece is different and no two are the same.

4.

Be creative with your Frenchic paint for entirely different looks. For example, you can achieve a faux linen effect by brushing an area vertically and followon top with horizontal strokes.

Even better, the products I use are all ecofriendly mineral paint with no toxins, so it is great for the environment.

5.

Distressing is a technique that creates the illusion of age on wood surfaces but avoid distressing all areas of the furniture equally. Instead think about authentic vintage furniture and the area that would receive the most wear and tear. Apply a light pressure when sanding your areas.

Follow us on Instagram @thehiddentreasontrove or search ‘The Hidden Treasure Trove’ on Facebook to see more transformations.

COFFEE AND GIFTS We are extending The Hidden Treasure Trove and are delighted to announce that a new coffee shop is on its way. We are really passionate about generating a beautiful environment for our customers and the new coffee shop will have a pretty shabby chic look, where you can sit back, enjoy a cuppa and relax with stunning views of the Mourne Mountains.

1.

Always prep wash with sugar soap, give a light sanding and clean off the piece. Priming can be avoided when using Frenchic paint.

At the Hidden Treasure Trove, we stock a range of handmade gifs, from floristry wreaths, Frenchic hampers and scatter cushions. We have local artists’ work in stock and a great selection of Mother’s Day gifts. Gift vouchers are available.

2.

Applying light coats of paint to build up your colour.

We are also stockists of Frenchic paint with all colours in stock.

3.

You can use different brush stokes for varied effects.

This month we are giving 5 per cent off on Frenchic products.

As spring arrives, it’s time to create the space you have always wanted and extend your living space outdoors with a garden studio. Restrictions on movement mean that we are staying at home more and really taking a look at our living spaces and how to get the most from them. So, it’s not surprising that the biggest home trend for 2021 is the garden studio. Also known as a garden room, cabin, luxury shed, or an outdoor room, at Luxury Garden Studios they guarantee to make your dream of more space a reality. In the past year we have seen an incredible amount of change and of course this is reflected in how we live our lives. Now that we spend more time at home, we need spaces to work, to work out, to socialise with direct family – or just a space to relax and chill out. For many, a home extension is just not a realistic or practical option and often the idea of a separate ‘close to nature’ studio is much more appealing. And with no planning permission required and a quick turnaround, a garden studio offers a fantastic addition to your home. Luxury Garden Studios offer a truly bespoke solution. Their team of experts work with you from the early planning stages to final installation and are with you every step of the way. They have over 40 years in the building trade and use their own tradesmen so they can guarantee completion dates on their projects. Whether you want a minimalist feel or a luxury look, they can offer you any finish you require. Working with Luxury Garden Studios takes the hassle out of your build as they manage all aspects of the project – all you have to do is tell them what you want. They have created studios for all kinds of clients, from business owners who want to operate close to home, to families looking for a child friendly play space or a couple looking for a luxury room for their hot tub. As we get ready for summer, let’s take a look at what Luxury Garden Studios can offer.

HOW MUCH ROOM DO YOU NEED FOR AN OUTDOOR STUDIO? The advantage of choosing Luxury Garden Studios is that we create your perfect outside experience based on the space available. We have completed garden rooms ranging from 3m X 3m to 10m x 12m and most sizes in between.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Costs are all dependent on the quality of the finish of each individual studio and if it is a standard build or turnkey finish. We do not offer finance ourselves, but we do offer a flexible payment structure including deposit and staged payments. Here are some indicative costs of some our most common studio requests: 3m x 3m £10750 + VAT 6m x 3.5m £14885 + VAT 8.5m x 3.5m £17885 + VAT

DO YOU NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?

CAN THEY BE FULLY PLUMBED WITH A BATHROOM?

A garden room is classified as an outbuilding, so it doesn't need to be granted planning permission, as long as it follows some very specific criteria, like the total area, the roof height etc. The majority of garden rooms by their nature are small enough to not exceed these parameters.

Absolutely, and this is something we can offer. We can connect to the services of the property to access the fresh water and waste.

HOW DO YOU HEAT THEM? In our standard finish we leave power points at pre agreed positions suitable for hanging oil filled radiators or similar, but with our turnkey packages we install these also.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A GARDEN STUDIO AND IS IT MESSY?

DO PEOPLE RUN BUSINESSES FROM THEM?

At Luxury Garden Studios, we have a purpose-built factory which enables us to construct the units off site then deliver and install within two hours. This depends on access and as this is not always possible, we can also build on site with completion time based on size and style, but usually no more than three days.

This is becoming increasingly popular, especially within the professional services and health and beauty industries. If someone has the room at their home to install a studio, they should look at the viability of it in comparison to renting a town centre premises.

We use ground screws to install where possible to reduce any element of digging around the garden but again when this is not suitable other methods are used which may require some groundwork. However, we always strive to minimise disruption to the garden and reinstate it as best we can before leaving.

Example: For someone who rents a town centre salon in Northern Ireland:

CAN YOU HAVE IT EXACTLY THE WAY YOU WANT IT - OR IS THERE A STANDARD FINISH?

Monthly cost – Rent & Rates £850

We pride ourselves on our ability to meet any demand, but we do have a standard finish for every studio that we complete.

Studio install - £17,885 (8.5m x 3.5m)

This includes but is not limited to light gauge steel frame, external composite cladding, uPVC windows and doors, insulated floor and walls, internal painting, laminate floor throughout, LED spotlights and a range of power points.

Total Cost £22,885

Annual Cost - £10,200 – (Excluding electric / heat) 5-year cost £51,000 Salon fit out - £5,000 (treatment beds / sinks etc) Return on Investment – 27 months

WHAT DO PEOPLE USE GARDEN STUDIOS FOR?

HOW SOON CAN I GET ONE?

They really are multi-purpose and we have completed projects which are used as: home gyms, home offices, business headquarters, bar and pool rooms, hair and beauty salons, self-contained accommodation, and to house golf simulators.

At this time of year as we approach the much welcomed longer and warmer evenings, everyone wants to have a garden room. This means we currently aim to achieve a 6-to-8-week completion date from confirmation of order.

CAN YOU SLEEP IN THEM AND USE THEM LIKE A SPARE ROOM?

HOW DO THEY WITHSTAND OUR WEATHER?

A garden room can be used for any purpose including self-contained accommodation, which can include a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom which we offer as a turnkey package.

All our studios are completed with a light gauge steel fame and a composite cladding external finish. The frame has a 20-year structural guarantee, and the maintenance free external cladding does not, unlike wood, absorb water and therefore remains structurally sound and stable. As an alternative to natural wood, composite offers a solution that is environmentally friendly, sustainable, and safe, but without the flaws and setbacks of natural wood products.

With our 40 years' experience in the construction industry, we have the unique ability to take a project from start to finish without sub-contracting or relying on tradespeople to carry out any additional works. This allows us to confidently predict contract delivery schedules and pricing schedules.

Employers have a ‘duty of care’ towards their employees and as such, should take practical steps to safeguard their employees’ health and safety whilst at work. Following the outbreak of Covid-19, it is normal for employees to be anxious about their safety in returning to the workplace. If an employee has a particular concern, they should address this with their employer without delay.

Employers should regularly communicate to their employees, the practical measures they are taking to help ensure a safe return to the workplace. They should encourage their employees to speak to them about their concerns and try and address these prior to requiring employees to return to work. For example, employers could offer extra car parking where possible so that employees can avoid using public transport or they could arrange for some employees to work different hours temporarily to avoid peak travel time, if public transport is a must. guidance, employers should conduct an updated Covid-19 Risk Assessment before their employees return to work. Following the risk assessment, employees should be made aware of their personal obligations with regards to health and safety as well as their employers’ obligations towards them. At a minimum, employers will need to provide their employees with the requisite PPE to complete their work safely and ensure that adequate hygiene facilities are in place and enforce social distancing as far as possible. It is likely that risk assessments will need to be updated as time passes and further risks are identified. Employers should keep their employees informed about these changes over time and provide refresher training on health and safety so that all employees are aware of their responsibilities.

CHANGES TO DOMESTIC ABUSE LAW IN NI Rachel Rice LL.B., Solicitor rrice@solicitorsni.net The Domestic Abuse and Civil Proceedings Bill (NI) 2021, which recently passed in the Northern Ireland Assembly, represents a significant step forward for victims of Domestic Abuse within the home setting. The new law, which will come into effect within the next months, will, for the first time, establish that mental abuse and controlling behaviour are punishable forms of domestic abuse. Certain aspects of adverse psychological conduct are identified as criminal offences. Additionally, the new legislation brings in stricter penalties for domestic violence where children are involved. A person found guilty of domestic abuse can face up to 14 years imprisonment. In our practice we regularly deal with victims of domestic abuse and if this is something which affects you or someone you know then we would be glad to provide appropriate advice, assistance and representation. We also work collaboratively with a broad range of support organisations and can signpost you to their services appropriately.

INTRODUCING THE EXCLUSIVE HAUS OF HAIR RANGE There was no time for rest during lockdown for Haus of Hair’s Charlene

Hawthorne. The dynamic businesswomen used her time to re-skill and to launch her own innovative range of hair products to keep your hair looking its best. Lockdown has been tough for everyone but in particular hairdressers have suffered from the seemingly never-ending closures. Loss of work and lack of income has caused real problems within the industry as hairdressing professionals have been forced to sit back and watch as their businesses closed for months on end. But in the midst of such a bleak time, top hairdresser Charlene Hawthorne has used lockdown to move her business forward and take her career in a direction she never thought possible. Charlene, a hairdresser of 15 years, who is owner of Haus of Hair in Camlough says that while her salon was closed, she put her focus into getting teaching qualifications and taking advanced training courses. And once she had done that, she launched her own range of Haus of Hair products and Charlene says: “Like most people I was set up a new website focussing on the retail depressed about lockdown, but I pulled side of her business. myself out of it and focussed. I feel like I have found my passion and I have used my time to improve my business and my skillset.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN HAUS OF HAIR?

I got married and had my first child and I struggled with the work/life balance. I decided to take a step back from running “I have enjoyed learning new things and a business, so I rented a chair for a while. At now I can’t wait to get back and see all my that time, I was nominated as Local Women Magazine’s Hairstylist of the Year and made lovely clients.” the final seven.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AS A HAIRDRESSER?

After three years of renting a chair and one more child, I decided I would take the leap I trained at Southern Regional College and back into running a business, Haus of Hair worked at Scissors in Newry before moving has been up and running now for two years. to Brighton. I managed a busy salon there for four years and soon became a colour TELL US ABOUT HAUS OF HAIR AND specialist. I am grateful for all the advanced WHAT YOU OFFER YOUR CLIENTS? training I received there. After returning At Haus of Hair, we pride ourselves in home I opened my own salon and ran continued education - we are both colour it successfully for six years. My work was and hair extension specialists. We have an regularly featured in magazines and I styled amazing, highly talented team who are all barista trained so we will make you the best at many events.

cappuccino or latte you’ve ever tasted! We aim to build a bond with our clients through consultation, understanding, professionalism and a touch of humour. We have a very chilled relaxed vibe which instantly puts our clients at ease. Our expert team are all trained in our retail range and prescribe the correct after-care for any hair or scalp type. We will only recommend and stock products that we truly believe will work for our clients.

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK TO WORK SOON?

I spent the first month of lockdown wallowing in self-pity. Then one morning I decided enough was enough. I needed a project to keep me busy, so I put all my focus into getting my teaching qualification. I’m now fully qualified and insured to teach but that wasn’t enough for me. I then completed the most difficult course to date, the Alfaparf master’s degree in chemicals and colour. After a lot of late nights studying and boring my husband

YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED A RANGE OF PRODUCTS - CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THEM? THE WAVER DRESS OUT COMB

We are counting down the days until we return. Hairdressers aren’t designed to sit still, we crave the buzz of the salon, the busy atmosphere and the social aspect of our job. We are used to seeing a new face every 30 to 60 minutes all day, every day - so for that to stop has been hard.

HOW HAS COVID-19 AFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS?

to death every night making him quiz me, I proudly finished top of my class, with 96% . The thoughts of my own brand had been brewing in my mind for some time and I worked day and night researching and developing our range, and our website.

This is designed to give you beautiful waves, or to create that stunning beachy boho look. I designed this comb as I often had clients say to me, they wished they could do their hair like that at home.

OMG HEAD BANDS

We have our machine washable bands to keep your hair from your face during your skincare routine or makeup application. They are made from highly absorbent fabric and will protect your hair. This came to me after years of having to bleach out the orange hair line of clients due to a build-up of chemicals from skincare products and makeup.

LUXURY SCRUNCHIES

My next project was my 100% Mulbury silk scrunchies. Our hair extensions can range from £450 to £600, so only the best should be used to protect them when they are tied up. These are strong durable anti-snap hair ties wrapped in silk. They are anti-kink and can be used in all hair types, not just extensions to prevent damage from tying your hair up.

THE DETANGLER BRUSH

I saw the need for a universal brush. It can be used wet or dry and used

to blow-dry. With the anti-snag design, you can brush hair extensions root to tip without pulling or causing damage. It has both intelli-flex bristles covered in poly tips which is proven not to damage hair and within those we have shorter boar bristles which are the gold standard. It’s my favourite from the collection and I use it daily on my own and my daughter hair.

CREASELESS CLIPS

These are a pack of five clips used to pin hair back or create waves and mould hair into shape without causing kinks, dents or lines. They are also exceptionally good for pin curling hair.

THE SCALP MASSAGER

This is a game changer for washing your hair. Perfectly moulded to sit in your palm, it uses gentle silicone tips to stimulate the follicles on the scalp by boosting blood circulation, encouraging all the nutrients to rush to the surface. And the more nutrients available, the more your hair will grow and the healthier it will become. The massaging movement also helps dislodge stubborn product build-up, grease and sweat so you can feel confident your scalp will be sparkly clean when you step out of the shower.

THE PRO CURLER

Our biggest product yet is to be launched at the end of March - our Pro Curler, the easiest way to curl your hair. Create a unique hairstyle and achieve perfect curls. It’s lightweight and cordless with a compact design so you can use it on the go. Best of all it causes no damage as the Ionic Ceramic Coating technology provides better heat distribution meaning it’s perfect for delicate hair. Features include: anti-tangle technology, Ionic ceramic coating, auto-lock system and a heat proof body.

A NEW CONCEPT IN DENTAL HYGIENE At Pure Dental Hygiene in Coleraine, award winning Dental Hygienist, Joanne Knox will take care of your teeth and gums.

For over 20 years Joanne Knox has worked tirelessy helping her patients focus on preventative measures to keep their teeth and gums healthy. As an award-winning dental hygienist with over 20 years of experience, she knows the importance of keeping your mouth healthy - and she wants her patients to have better access to professionals like her who offer this specialist service. Traditionally patients have accessed hygienists through their dental practice, but with waiting lists longer than ever due to Covid-19, there is a real need for the services that Pure Dental Hygiene offers. Pure Dental Hygiene opened in January and is one of only two practices in Ireland that offers exclusive access to dental hygiene services. Patients can visit Joanne every three months for a thorough clean which helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. You don’t need to be referred, you simply make an appointment and Joanne will see you. If you have any problems that require a dentist, you will be advised to make an appointment at your own dental practice. Here Joanne tells Local Women more about the services she offers and what prompted her to set up her own business.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES A DENTAL HYGIENIST DO? Dental Hygienists are trained to the highest of standards to treat gum disease and educate patients about preventing

tooth decay. There’s a lot more to a dental hygienist than just cleaning teeth. A hygienist manages the prevention and treatments to maintain gum health, which in turn makes the job of a dentist easier. People are now more aware than ever of the significance of periodontal health to holistic health benefits. In the times we are currently living through we all understand more how important it is to control bacteria and maintain good hygiene and your mouth is no different.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? Our primary focus is on the prevention of dental disease because it’s true that prevention is cheaper than cure. We do routine cleaning and polishing, the treatment of mild to severe gum issues, bleaching and we make sports’ guards, among other things. This is your opportunity to see a hygienist with no waiting lists while also staying with your own dentist.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO VISIT THE HYGIENIST? You should see a dental hygienist every three to six months. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, a lot of dental practices 50 | Local Women Magazine

have had to reduce appointments because they need the surgery space to allow fallow time after aerosol generating procedures. A lot of hygienists have lost sessions of work purely due to lack of chair spaces which means patients can’t get treatment as often as they would like.

AT PURE DENTAL HYGIENE, PATIENTS CAN ACCESS A DENTAL HYGIENIST WITHOUT SEEING THEIR DENTIST - IS THIS A NEW CONCEPT? It’s a relatively new concept - in Ireland there is only one other practice of its type. In 2013 the government changed the rules allowing the general public to access a dental hygienist directly, without the need for a referral from a dentist. When this change in legislation happened, I saw the opportunity for hygienists to become a more accessible independent entity. I was fortunate to work in practices that embraced dental hygiene and encouraged me to treat patients via direct access under their umbrella. With their support and encouragement, I was honoured with the title of Northern Ireland Health Care Awards Dental Hygienist of the Year 2018.

I AM A NERVOUS PATIENT IS IT PAINFUL? No, we go to great lengths to ensure the patient is comfortable throughout. We can even use numbing gel or in severe cases local anaesthetic.

DO YOU TREAT CHILDREN? Yes, we offer a treatment called the Pure Tiny. This is a fun introduction to the dental surgery environment. The younger you get them sitting in the chair the better. We are all about preventing the actual need for treatment so preventative treatments and education are key. Teeth can be disclosed, and the kids can physically see the plaque (dirty bugs!) on their teeth - they then get a gentle clean and polish.

WHAT POLICIES HAVE YOU PUT IN PLACE TO PROTECT YOUR PATIENTS AGAINST COVID-19? I set up the surgery with the most stringent Covid-19 policies, so the only people you will come in contact with will be myself and my nurse. We have a one person out and a one person in policy so you are getting our undivided attention, and social distancing will not be an issue. Feel reassured that this surgery is built around protecting you and our staff, especially in these uncertain times.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SET UP A NEW BUSINESS DURING A PANDEMIC? Having my own practice has always been my dream and this independent concept has been my dream for my whole career. I was lucky to work with and help pioneer hygiene focused dental practices throughout my career. But as I got older, I wanted more independence and control over my own career.

I always had this area in mind, but genuinely never thought I would have the nerve to pursue it. Over lockdown all dental practices were shut, so for the first time in my 20-year career, I was at home. I had time to reevaluate what was important and what I wanted and needed from life. During this time, my mum who lived in Greenisland took ill, and because I was not working, my partner and I moved in with her to care for her as she recovered. As the days progressed it became apparent that she was not going to recover. We discovered she had an aggressive brain tumour and she died in my arms on 9th August at Antrim Hospital. While I was caring for mum, a property in the area I loved became available. Mum loved it too and was keen for me to go for it. But we were in the midst of a pandemic and I was scared! But I went for it and in October, after our lockdown wedding, we began work on the practice. My now husband, who is an electrician by trade, did the majority of the work. We were blown away by the support of the dental company that helped us fit out the premises - they became like family. Mum left me enough money to get the business up and running and establish my dream, and hopefully leave a legacy she would be proud of. Pure Dental Hygiene is located at 14 Sandel Village, Coleraine. REVIEW: A perfect day to night palette

Make up artist Chloe Hetherington works her magic on Local Women Editor Kim Kelly using the fantastic new Ellora Paris Palette. The new Ellora Paris Palette, created in collaboration with Belfast-based MUA Katie Madden, is an absolute game-changer when it comes to high-quality, creamy shadows that give you looks that will take you from day to night. It’s an impressive and versatile palette with 28 highly pigmented shades of eyeshadow, comprising of 16 rich and buildable matte colours, as well as 12 stunning glittery shades. Unlike many palettes these days which tend to theme colours in separate collections, meaning you end up with too many similar colours – not to mention having to buy different palettes for different occasions – Ellora has everything you need in one place. The range of colours is astounding from vibrant festival shades, party glitters and my favourites - a range of smoky Victoria Beckham style colours. It really is the only palette you will need from summer to winter and day to night. The hues of the powders on the Ellora palette span earthy, natural shades and vibrant, universal shades, resulting in an eclectic mix of shades that will compliment every skin tone and colour. Usually,

palettes

are

squarely at the teenage, early 20s market but there are some gorgeous sophisticated colours here perfect for all ages. Added to the amazing eye shadows there is a rich bronzer, creamy blush and two glowing highlighters to help you perfect your look. It’s clear that experienced MUA Katie Madden of KM Studios has had a big influence in the design of the versatile palette and shadows as they are simple to use, highly pigmented and so, so blendable. When it comes to applying make up, I believe it’s important to ask the experts. So, I ask make up artist Chloe Hetherington from Younique Clinic in Belfast to try out the colours on me. Chloe is really surprised at the range of shades in the Ellora Paris Palette as there really are an extensive range of colours. Chloe says: “I am very impressed. There is everything here. There are so many colours, it would work for all skin tones and all ages which is unusual for a single palette. “I really enjoyed working with it as the shadows are very pigmented. You don’t need to use much product to build a look.”

Chloe created a lovely smoky eye look

Chloe gives me a lovely smoky eye using the browns and neutral shades which really bring out the blue in my eyes.

I really like the finished look and it lasts well into the evening without smudging. The colours are lovely and strong and bright without being too garish and young for me – which is always a worry when you are in your 40s! I am really impressed with the Ellora Palette and I know you will be too - and what’s even better is that it is vegan and cruelty free.

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING!

Staying stylish when you are pregnant isn’t a problem thanks to Dress My Bump Maternity Hire and Dress My Bump Preloved. Local Women meets stylish mum Karen Forsythe who is helping mums-to-be look and feel great. You know what it’s like – you’re six months pregnant complete with swollen ankles, tiredness and a new bump, and someone invites you to a wedding. Not only do you not feel like shopping, but you don’t know what suits you anymore, you feel frumpy and really don’t want to spend lots of money on an outfit you will only wear once. That’s how Karen Forsythe from Cloughmills was feeling when she was pregnant with twins Evie and Molly four years ago and couldn’t find anything to wear to a wedding. After ending spending ages ordering dresses online and sending them back, she ended up wearing a dress that wasn’t comfortable and she didn’t like that much. And so, the idea for Dress My Bump Maternity Hire was formed - but it wasn’t until after she had her third child Grace, who is now two, that she took the plunge and set up her businesses aimed at expectant mums just like she had been. Even though she worked as an accountant during the day and juggles looking after her three children, Karen has made a huge success of her business and women from around the country seek out her services when they are expecting and have a special event to attend. Her business has also recently expanded, and she has also set up Dress My Bump Preloved selling high quality second-hand maternity

and nursing clothes. Karen has moved her business online over lockdown but is looking forward to restrictions being eased so that she can once again meet her customers face to face. So, let’s meet this supermum who loves helping mums-to be find their maternity look and dress their bumps in style…

We are so impressed that you run two businesses for expectant mums - You’re a super mum! Life is definitely busy, but I think sometimes I thrive on that. I’m very lucky to have a fantastic support network in my husband, the girls’ grandparents and our wider family – it’s because of them that I am able to do it. I also work part-time as an accountant so the days I’m not working I’m at home with the girls. Most of the work involved in Dress My Bump is done in the evenings but there

have been more than a few occasions where I’ve needed someone to keep the girls for a few hours through the day to catch up on things and I’m very lucky that I have plenty of offers of help.

Can you tell us a little about Dress My Bump Maternity Hire and what you offer? I started Dress My Bump Maternity Hire in August 2019, when Grace was around six months old. The idea had been playing on my mind for a while since I was pregnant with the twins and had to find a maternity dress for a wedding. There was just nowhere local to go to be able to try on dresses. I began to research maternity dress hire and realised that there was nowhere local offering that service. So, in the summer of 2019 I bit the bullet and started up my own hire service. At Dress My Bump Maternity Hire, we hire

out designer maternity and nursing occasion dresses from as little as £30 in sizes 6 to 18. We also hire out fascinators, headpieces, handbags, shawls and faux fur wraps to complement your dress. We have a wide range of dresses to fit all bump shapes and sizes, including full length gowns and we also have a wide range of satin and diamante sash belts which are included in the cost of your dress hire.

Do you work on an appointment basis? Yes, we operate by appointment only with appointments normally available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and throughout the day on Saturdays. Each appointment is booked for an hour but quite often they run on for up to two hours as sometimes customers find it hard to decide! I leave plenty of time between appointments anyway, we are quite relaxed that way.

in particular, our jeans are normally priced around £8 which is a massive saving on your maternity wardrobe. I personally check every item to make sure they are in a saleable condition, iron the items (wash them if needed), photograph them and list them on the website.

How can you stay stylish when you are pregnant? I think you should try to stay true to your own style. When I was pregnant the first time, I’m ashamed to say that my style was led by the clothes which were available to me on the high street (which was not a huge choice by any means!) I became aware the second time around of the preloved maternity clothes market and it was a joy to be able to find unique pieces which slotted right in with my own pre-pregnancy style.

And what about Dress My Bump Preloved? Dress My Bump Preloved was another idea which had been playing on my mind for a while but came about almost as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020. I had organised a preloved maternity and nursing clothes sale event for April 2020 to be held in a local hotel as a side-line to the maternity hire business. During the winter of 2019 and spring of 2020, I had been gathering up as many preloved clothes as possible for the event. Then COVID-19 struck, and the lockdown meant that we had to cancel the event. I decided to set up a website to try to sell the clothes (www.dressmybumppreloved.com). The website first went live in June 2020 and we have been going from strength to strength since then. I normally buy from local women who are clearing out some space and want to make some money in the process. We sell all types of maternity and nursing clothes including dresses, jeans, trousers, tops, jumpers, coats, bump bands, shirts and pyjamas. All items are in great condition (some brand new with tags!) and are a fraction of the retail price –

How easy is it to source fashionable maternity wear? The preloved market makes it so much easier than I once thought. Since starting Dress My Bump Preloved, I have been so pleasantly surprised at the style of some of the maternity and nursing clothes. It’s so refreshing to see colourful, pretty, unique clothes, instead of the blacks/greys/stripes in the shops. That said, preloved clothes are usually sold on the larger marketplaces in bundles. My experience has been that there was maybe only one or two items in the bundle which I really wanted or some of the items may have been in poor condition. Dress My Bump Preloved sells items individually so you can choose what you want, and all items are checked to make sure they are in good condition.

What’s the best part of your job? Without a doubt the best part is meeting people. I love hearing the pregnancy journeys of my customers and in many cases I have stayed in touch and have had the pleasure of hearing about the new arrival. It’s especially exciting when they return with their little one to look for a nursing dress! Of course, there are some pregnancy journeys tinged with sadness too and those customers I will never forget.

How can I get in touch and see what you have on offer? You can visit our maternity hire website at www. dressmybumpmaternityhire.com to see some of our dresses and get some more information regarding the hire process - there are more pictures on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Appointments can be made by contacting us on Facebook, Instagram or using the contact details on our website. All our preloved clothes are listed on the website at www.dressmybumppreloved.com. We have separate Facebook and Instagram pages for the preloved business and if you have items to sell or any other queries, you can get in touch by contacting us through these or using the contact form on the website.

“YOU KNOW YOUR OWN BODY BEST” March is Endometriosis Awareness Month and Dollingstown woman Anouska Black is determined that more people become educated about this debilitating condition.

ndometriosis, [en-do-met-tri-o-sis] a word that is dictating the lives of 176 million of women, their friends, family and colleagues worldwide. Every, Single. Day.

However, 62% of women aged between 1624 have either not heard of or understand what it actually is. Listed on the NHS’s 20 most painful health conditions to live with, endometriosis is tissue that is similar to that of the endometrium found outside the uterus, causing excruciating pain, which can be diagnosed through a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery). Endometriosis is much more than just a bad period and some symptoms include, painful, heavy or irregular periods, painful ovulation, infertility, painful or irregular bowel or bladder movements, nausea and severe bloating. These physical symptoms can lead to a lengthy list of related problems such as chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life, but endometriosis often coexists with other conditions including fibromyalgia and adenomyosis. DON’T PUT IT OFF - JUST DO IT! Heather Staniland went up to a size 22 after the birth of her son, but with the help of Slimming World, she lost 5 stone and dropped to a size 10.

At the start of 2008, Heather Staniland described herself as a curvy size 14 who enjoyed life and career as a Retail Manager. But after busy days in work, she said she soon fell into a routine of bringing home ready-made meals and takeaways for convenience. Upon discovering the wonderful news that she was pregnant, hunger and fatigue quickly set in. Heather said: “I craved bread and I enjoyed lots of toast with butter and marmalade for breakfast and teatime too. Extra snacks like chocolate and crisps crept in but I told myself I was eating for two now!” In October 2008, her son Josh was born by Caesarean section. Feeling exhausted with the lack of sleep, Heather turned to food as comfort and ate chocolate biscuits by the packet. She regularly bought ready-made sandwiches for lunch and cream buns with her afternoon coffee. By the time December approached Heather was a size 22. When she went clothes shopping for a new outfit for Christmas, she said she said she was ‘horrified’ to see the size she had become. Heather remembers: “In the New Year, as I arrived home with yet another takeaway my neighbour stopped for a chat and was excited to tell me how she had joined a local Slimming World group and had lost a stone since Christmas! “The more she told me, the more interested I became. The Slimming World Food Optimising Plan sounded great, it had such a variety of food and nothing was off limits. The social side sounded appealing too, with group help and support every week. “The next day I decided that something had to change, I felt ready to draw a line on my pregnancy weight gain. The following week, due to my neighbour’s inspiration I joined my local Slimming World group. Although I was nervous, I was excited to face this new challenge. “At group I discovered I could still enjoy toast and instead of binging on biscuits, I opted for Slimming World Hifi bars with my coffee. Lunches varied from filling homemade soups to baked potatoes with baked beans or tuna and a huge salad. “I mastered the art of making perfect crispy Slimming World chips along with homemade burgers to help curb my cravings for fast food. Eating out was easy too, I chose steak instead of

pizza and could still have a glass of wine! “As the weather improved, I enjoyed daily walks at the local park. I could walk at a slow pace for an hour whilst Josh slept in his pram. Building activity in every day helped me keep focus on my weight loss, at Slimming World it’s called ‘Body Magic’ and it’s been key to my success. “By the time my maternity leave finished in July 2009, I had reached my Slimming World target, losing 5 stones and I was a perfect size 10. “I felt so proud and confident in my new stylish work outfits after having worn huge baggy clothes for so long. However, back to work as a new mum soon took its toll on my new healthy lifestyle and I no longer found the time to attend group. “I continued to food optimise where I could, but soon bad habits began to creep in again. By May 2012 I had gained a little bit of weight and, with Josh ready to start play group it was an ideal time in my life to return to Slimming World. My goal was to lose a stone in time for the summer. “Full of determination and back on track, I lost 5 and a half pounds in my first week back and I was soon back my target weight of 8 stone and 2 pounds. “When Josh started Nursery school in September, I continued to walk every day. I soon got back into the routine of cooking delicious Slimming World meals. “Some days I would use the slow cooker to batch cook a Bolognese or chilli for the freezer, I find planning my meals weekly and walking daily helped keep me on track. “In September 2014 I was extremely proud to be awarded Diamond Member, this is recognition of being at target for a whole year! “I have gained some wonderful new friends over the years at Slimming World. We regularly chat online, meet for brunch, and enjoy some fun body magic walks around the local park. “I really enjoy being part of the social team to support the group. We also have a Facebook group where we share recipes, ideas and generally motivate each other. This has been so beneficial during the COVID-19 19 pandemic for members to keep in touch.

HEATHER BEFORE past year, I like many have faced some challenges. I was determined that I had changed my lifestyle for good and I still remain target member to this day. With the current lockdown in place, my son enjoys daily walks with me. It is a wonderful relaxing way to unwind after home schooling has finished. Walking is a great way to improve overall health and it has certainly been a huge factor in my weight loss journey. On rainy days when we can’t get out, I complete online workouts to remain active, or join in with my son’s PE circuits as part of his homeschooling timetable. By using light dumb bells, for as little as 10 minutes daily, I have toned my arms immensely. “My advice to anyone is - don’t put off what you can start today - you will soon see and feel the benefits! I feel grateful that Slimming World has changed my life.” Visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk or call 0344 897 8000 to find out about Slimming World’s temporary virtual groups and find your nearest one.

Mother of the Bride FROM GASP BOUTIQUE, ARMAGH.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year , I hope 2021 brings you all an abundance of health this year and we can all look back on 2020 as a stronger Country. Just knowing that this year we will have so many positive things happen in our lives is something to very much look forward to. This month I decided to open my column with an article on Mother of the bride, after all weddings are still going ahead even if the numbers are limited so it is the new year and if you have a special daughter or daughter in law getting married this year you will need to celebrate the day in style , so just keep

in mind that it is also your time to shine brightly too! Here at Gasp Armagh we are one of Northern Ireland and Ireland’s leading boutiques specialising in mother of the bride outfits, designer brands such as John Charles, Sonia Pena, and Carla Ruiz, to name a few. Gasp has always been known for the destination boutique for sourcing the very best brands and designs for all your needs. We pride ourselves in customer service and we have a very long history for Mother of the bride Outfits that are unique, stylish and less traditional if required. Whether you are looking for a whole outfit or even just a jacket or accessories to finish off the look,

Armagh

here at GASP we have a chock full of amazing labels and latest trends and carry an extensive range of dresses also, we cover all colours, designs, shapes and sizes ranging from sizes 8 to 26! If you know your style and have a good idea of what you want, you can still be truly unique and Wow At your wedding , all you need is a little guidance from our well trained team of stylists who truly pride themselves in helping you find that perfect outfit. Please note that due to Covid safety we are taking personal appointments in advance as we are getting booked up fairly quickly and we would like to give you that special attention that you deserve . Whether you’re the mother of the bride or the mother of the groom, there is a certain ‘look’ that people will expect from you timeless, tailored and above all very elegant and chic. It would be advisable and probably expected of you to notify the mother of the groom (presumably to prevent overdressing, clashing colours, and other fashion ideas) And while it’s certainly good form, it’s not a requirement especially if you’re worried about been pushy or bossy. That said, the mother of the groom might really appreciate and even expect a heads up. I Have had so many Mother of the brides come in looking for an outfit and they are worried that the mother of the groom might wear the same colour etc so its best that you subtly pass the details along or better yet, give her a call yourself. Try to sound as friendly “I finally found a dress that fits! Do you know what you’re wearing yet?” Chances are the mother of the groom will want to know more. Of course, she might be totally disinterested, but if that happens, don’t sweat it you’ve been heard. Some will swear by the “rule” that all the dresses must coordinate. And some

brides really love that matchymatchy look. But there are countless alternatives. Maybe stay within one colour spectrum if the bridesmaids dress happens to be baby blue for instance the mother of the bride can wear navy. But mixing and matching can be ultra-stylish too. What’s most important, however, is that everyone feels comfortable and beautiful, so come along to visit us here at Gasp we will do our very best to look after you! Another bit of advice is to start shopping for your outfit as soon as possible. If you must put it off because you are trying to shape up or you just dread the idea of shopping in general, you still really need to aim to have made a decision at least six months before the wedding it will also let the groom’s mom know so she can get her outfit orgainsed plus by doing this you can also get the father of the brides colour scheme in place also. That’s all for this Month ladies, if you would like more information on the extensive range of our Mother of the brides designer labels, sizes, accessories , hats, footwear, headpieces and alterations please feel free to visit us here at Gasp we are open six days a week and would love to see you! Regards

Local landfill is no longer in fashion

Environmental charity, Live Here Love Here, is calling on local fashion lovers to stop putting old clothes in the bin and reuse, repair and reimagine. We all love buying new clothes and when the shops re-open we will be first in the queue at the many amazing local boutiques. But when it comes to the environment, we overconsume and underuse our clothing, with approximately 533 tonnes of clothing thrown out every single week. Environmental charity, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful has launched a new campaign, in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), to tackle public behaviour and awareness around textile waste and encourage consumers to never put clothing in the bin. Since December 2020 alone, Northern Ireland has disposed of approximately 27,700 tonnes of textiles – over half the weight of our muchloved Titanic ship - with many of these items still in perfect condition.

Siobhan Purnell

Most-concerningly, around 30% of the unwanted avoid binning textiles while potentially making clothing and other textiles that are binned each year, some money in the process. It’s also worth approximately 8,300 tonnes, end up in landfill. remembering that style always comes back Landfills are a costly burden for ratepayers, around so hanging onto a few choice pieces but they also emit greenhouse gases which are could be a fashion-forward choice. harmful to the environment and create other Repair: Wear and tear doesn’t automatically dangerous pollutants that negatively affect the mean the bin. Siobhan Purnell, Co-ordinator of the Fashion Forever campaign said: “Our Fashion Forever message is simple - never put your unwanted clothing in the bin. “Remind yourself of the more environmentallyfriendly, alternative options – reuse, repair and reimagine. Could someone use this jacket? Can I easily repair this hole? Can I sell this dress online? “Fast and disposable fashion through its price and fast delivery propositioning makes it easy for people, particularly the younger generation, to buy lots of clothes. Buying lots of clothes perpetuates disposal and therefore there is an escalating trend of binning textiles.

“We want people to know that they can still enjoy fashion and shopping, but also that by making one small change and committing to never putting clothes in the bin, they can make a huge recycling centre when it becomes safe to do so. difference to our local environment. WRAP UP AND GET OUT! We might be in lockdown but get up, get out andget fit. Here’s some great active wear from Kular that will keep you cosy when you exercise outdoors. Three Ways to Enjoy Exercise this February It might be easier to stay indoors, wrap up with a blanket and binge on Bridgeton but we all know how great it feels to say we’ve been outside and enjoyed some kind of daily exercise. Gyms are still closed, and motivation is at an all-time low. But with this month’s column, we’re giving you three different ideas that will help you enjoy exercise again.

Get your Bubble on Board

Getting active doesn’t have to be a chore – you can make it as much fun as you like. Encourage the people in your household to get on board and make it part of your routine. Why not schedule in a daily walk or run somewhere close to your home? You could explore local forests or spend some time at the beach if it’s within your local proximity. We’re lucky to have lots of beautiful landmarks on our doorstep to choose from.

Get together with Friends

We’re all missing our friends right now, and it seems like forever since we last caught up with them in person. While we might not be able to for another while, we can still get together virtually and work out online via Zoom or Google Hangout. Send out an invite and get your besties together for a virtual yoga or aerobics class. You could 78 | Local Women Magazine

even make it a bit of fun and sign up to an online dance or Zumba class. Even if you don’t burn off those January wines, you can laugh on the phone afterwards at how ridiculous you looked trying to master the moves.

Get competitive

Another great way to get active this February is to set yourself a challenge. It’s safe to say we’re all feeling a little down and out, but what better way to inject some excitement into your life than a daily challenge. The sense of achievement at the end will boost your mood and you’ll feel even better for it. Some ideas include: • Walking 5,000 to 10,000 steps a day • Jogging three times a week • Hike up a local mountain • Try cold-water swimming at your local beach Whatever it might be, try to get your friends and family involved too – you could even set up a dedicated group chat to motivate each other every week.

Wrap up in Style

It’s important to wrap up while you’re enjoying all this outdoor activity. You might work up a sweat if you’re working out, but it is still super cold in February so a few layers are a necessity. We’ve lots of great unisex layering pieces online from The North Face and Napapijri that can work for both men and women. Long-sleeved t-shirts, a fleece and a heavier coat will keep you feeling toasty while you’re tackling the elements. And don’t forget about your hat, scarf and gloves. All these pieces will take you into Spring because let’s face it, we’re never too blessed when it comes to Mr Sunshine.

IT’S ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE REAL THING… Local Women’s Food and Drink Columnist Paula Gracey has been enjoying some home schooling of the vino variety and sampling new takeaway ideas. ZOOM – IT’S A WINE TASTING!

in his misspent Lurgan youth. Buckfast, yip.

So, here we are, almost a year since the hideous lockdowns began and hopefully heading in the right direction out of the tunnel. I have missed so many things this past year, seeing family, friends, dining out, holidays and those voyages of discovery that wine tastings take us upon.

And at tastings, when asked what aromas he was detecting from the finest wines, he would declare ‘wet dog’ or ‘cat’s wee’.

Like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you are going get. I love the anticipation of trying new and different wines and learning the stories behind them, often from the winemakers themselves.

He is also less likely to let us down on the virtual online tastings that have filled the gap left by the real thing. (Mr Bojangles, our cat, does that, sitting on the keyboard, loudly offering his opinions)

Among our favourites are Direct Wine Shipments’ summer walkabout and Christmas tastings in their atmospheric old tasting room, complete with its own ghost, at Corporation Square in Belfast and JN Wines annual festive showcase at the swish Merchant hotel. How we hope they return again this year.

You simply order your wines in, log onto Zoom and sip and enjoy as you learn about each wine in turn. The kind of home schooling I like.

Not that I haven’t been conducting my own at home, of course! My love of all things wine comes from my parents' interest and the fun we had at dinner parties and meals out with like-minded friends when we used to have 'blind' tastings for the craic, with various wines concealed in paper bags and everyone offering their best educated guess as to what they were drinking. Such was my interest, I decided to learn more and have since gained Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Stage II qualifications. An ‘ology’ in wine, you might say. So, imagine my horror when husband-to-be came along, purporting to be an aficionado of fine wines when, in reality, he was quite literally a complete plonker. On our first dinner date, he insisted on ordering his favourite ‘flint dry’ Spanish and out came this ultrasweet dessert wine. He had never drunk red wine, bar

Thankfully he has been retrained and now properly appreciates his wines with the rest of us.

Our most recent took us to Sicily for a very interesting online tasting of Purato wines with the wonderfully enthusiastic and passionate winemaker Stefano Girelli himself. Styled as wines with a conscience, they are organic, vegan friendly and come in bottles made from recycled glass (all for £9.99, just Google them). There were four wines, a white, a Rose and two reds. We began with the Purato Catarrato Pinot Grigio, a lovely fresh, balanced and well-rounded white followed by the Purato Rose, a lovely blush pink colour. We are all drinking more Rose wines than ever, not just in summer, and this one is a great all-rounder and perfect partner for lots of different foods as well as an aperitif. The first red was the Purato Nero D'Avola 2019 made from Sicily's number one grape variety and pairs perfectly with lots of your favourite Italian foods. Finally, we finished with Purato Siccari Appassimento and the only one with a cork so always make sure you have your corkscrew at the ready for what Stefano referred to as "The theatre of wine" – pulling the cork out. Sicarri means sun-dried and that is exactly what happens to the grapes in the wine-making style called "Appassimento". This makes for an intense wine, delicious with hard cheese, pasta, red meat and roast vegetable dishes, to name but a few. Try an online wine tasting if you get the chance – not as good as the real thing but it’s the next best.

PIZZA PUNKS

We are now running out of takeaway ideas, it was bound to happen. We have our favourites, of course, but even they get samey after a 500-year lockdown, or at least that's what it feels like. So, hearing great things about Pizza Punks in downtown Belfast – ‘Anarchy in the oven’, their sign says – we decided to give them a go. They pride themselves on their signature handcrafted San Franciscan sourdough pizza base, cooked in woodfired evens and encourage us to "take back control of your pizza" with over 50 unlimited toppings to choose from for one flat price of £11. That was a challenge right there – how many toppings can I manage to squeeze on a pizza and especially being seriously weird and not liking cheese (I can hear

80 | Local Women Magazine

the screams of horror as I write that!) I could go to town – you can even have an egg, which I did. Anchovies, tuna, mushrooms, sweetcorn, peppers, olives, the heap. Hubby made up his own momentous creation and we eagerly awaited their delivery, which was bang on time on a cold Saturday evening in February. The pizzas were piping hot with plenty of toppings, no scrimping anywhere. The base was delicious, not too thick, not too thin with a great crust - I love the crust – why do people throw them away?

THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE LIFE SWEETER

As well as my obsession with coffee, my love of toast and marmalade is immeasurable. I love bread anyway but a toasted soda or wheaten farl, not to mention my beloved Knutty Krust (which has become increasingly difficult to track down recently for some reason) covered in a good, tangy marmalade is happiness on a plate. In my search for the perfect marmalade, I recently discovered Mrs Darlington's Orange & Gin Marmalade, from the fresh fruit and veg shop (it doesn’t have a name) on Lurgan’s main street, I know! Marmalade and alcohol… pure alchemy! It’s the little things that make you happy.

It’s completely inclusive and all about body positivity and body acceptance as well as getting to know your own body,” continues Mary who started then making enquiries about wild swimming closer to home. Born just a few miles from Lough Neagh, she knew Ballyronan Beach well. It, she decided, was perfect for wild swimming and so she launched the aptly-named Ballyronan Bluetits under the auspices of international swim group the Bluetit Chill Swimmers.

Women’s Health WITH DR MARK MCCOMISKEY

Dr Mark McComiskey MD MRCOG is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon. Dr Mark McComiskey is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon who trained at the world-famous Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America Dr McComiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life. Each month Dr McComiskey provides Local Women readers with healthcare advice, dispelling some of the many myths surrounding women’s health.

RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE

Each month Dr Mark McComiskey MD MRCOG discusses gynaecological conditions and women’s health issues. Dr Mark McComiskey is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon who trained at the world-famous Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America. Dr McComiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life. Last month Dr McComiskey looked at early pregnancy loss and this month he looks at recurrent miscarriage, when a woman has more than three early pregnancy losses.

WHAT IS RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE? Recurrent miscarriage is usually defined as the loss of three consecutive early pregnancies and very often there is no cause identified.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE THE CHANCE OF MISCARRIAGE? ● not smoking during pregnancy ● not drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs during pregnancy ● eating a healthy, balanced diet ● try to avoid dangerous infections during pregnancy, such as rubella ● avoid foods during pregnancy that are known to harm the mother or baby ● being a healthy weight before getting pregnant (obesity increases the chance of miscarriage)

TRYING TO FIND THE CAUSE OF RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE Most miscarriages are thought to be caused by a one-off problem with the development of the foetus.

KINGSBRIDGE PRIVATE HOSPITAL Tel: 028 9066 7878 www.kingsbridgeprivatehospital.com

In these cases – the miscarriage could not have been avoided.

HOW DO YOU TREAT AN IDENTIFIED CAUSE OF MISCARRIAGE? If three or more miscarriages in a row have happened - further tests are often used to check for any underlying cause. This is the time that most women will ask their family doctor to refer them to a specialist. However, no cause is found in more than half of cases. If the specialist doctor (usually a gynaecologist) can identify a cause for the miscarriages, then it may be possible to undergo a treatment in order to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

WHAT TREATMENTS CAN BE UNDERTAKEN TO IMPROVE CHANCES OF A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY? ● Blood testing Blood can be checked for high levels of substances called antiphospholipid antibody and lupus anticoagulant. These antiphospholipid antibodies are known to increase the chance of blood clots. These blood clots and can reduce the blood supply to the foetus, which can cause a miscarriage. Treatment with aspirin and heparin can prevent tiny blood clots in the developing foetus and placenta, hence improving pregnancy outcomes in women with this condition. Disorders of the thyroid gland can cause miscarriage also, these can often be identified by blood tests and treated relatively easily. ● Uterine abnormalities A transvaginal 2D or 3D ultrasound can be used to check the structure of the womb for any abnormalities that may be impairing the growth of a pregnancy. Surgery can be performed in selected cases to restore the anatomy of the womb and reduce miscarriage rates. ● Weakened cervix A weakened cervix (cervical insufficiency) is where the cervix is unable to support the

pregnancy sac to stay within the uterus. Ultrasound scanning during the early weeks of pregnancy can check for a weakened cervix. A weakened cervix can sometimes be treated with an operation to put a small stitch of strong thread around the cervix to keep it closed. The cervical stitch is usually carried out after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. ● Chromosome testing (karyotyping) If recurrent miscarriage occurs, the foetus can be tested for abnormalities in the chromosomes (strands of DNA). If a subsequent genetic abnormality is found within the foetus, the mother and father can also be blood tested for abnormalities within the chromosomes that could be causing the problem. If karyotyping detects problems within the parental chromosomes, then referral to a genetics doctor would be recommended.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF HAVING A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY FOLLOWING A MISCARRIAGE? Despite the fact that a single miscarriage is common, only 1% of the population suffer from recurrent miscarriage. This means that after one or even two miscarriages, the most likely outcome is that the next pregnancy will not end in a loss. Progestogen therapy has relatively recently been shown to benefit women with recurrent miscarriage – helping to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

LET’S TALK ABOUT PELVIC HEALTH

Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health Anne-Marie Campbell is helping women to overcome embarrassment and seek help for intimate women’s health problems at Health Hub Professionals NI. Pictures by Gerard Gormley Anne-Marie Campbell is on a mission to improve the lives of women. As a Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health, she wants all women to have proper information about intimate health issues that affect them and the ability to be able to seek immediate help. For too long women have been ashamed and embarrassed about certain problems and feel they have no one to turn to. Often issues such as incontinence, prolapse, sexual dysfunction or problems relating to periods and the menopause, are not subjects that women feel comfortable talking to their GP about. They feel they have to simply live with their health issues, causing pain, distress, anxiety, and a lack of confidence. Added to this is the problem of NHS waiting lists for specialist clinics relating to women’s health issues, meaning many women are suffering for too long. It’s for this reason that Anne Marie set up a private practice called Health Hub Professionals NI where she works alongside her friend and business partner Karen Murphy who is a specialist hand therapist. At Health Hub Professionals NI Anne-Marie assesses and treats patients in a timely manner, helping them to overcome problems that they may have lived with for quite some time. Anne- Marie says: “Women should know they are not alone and that there should be no shame or secrecy around their experiences. Attitudes are definitely changing, and women are definitely less likely to accept that this is just how life should be because they’ve had a baby or they’re going through the menopause.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN WOMEN’S HEALTH? I have been a Pelvic Health Physio in the NHS for almost 18 years and have been in private practice for over two years.

WHAT IS YOUR WORK HISTORY? I qualified from UUJ in 2001 and took up my first physio post at Our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton, Leitrim at the start of 2002. Being a homebird I moved back to Derry to take up a junior post in Altnagelvin at the start of 2003 and got my first Women’s Health job later that year. The job has evolved and grown over the years and is now known as Pelvic Health as we also treat male pelvic floors. I have done a lot of postgraduate training over the years and have a special interest in the treatment of Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation) and in psychosexual dysfunction. I am currently doing a Diploma with the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine and hope to go on to be a member. 86 | Local Women Magazine

Anne-Marie Campbell

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE WORK OF HEALTH HUB PROFESSIONALS NI? I treated my friend Karen Murphy, who is a hand specialist, for hip problems after the birth of her last child and we decided to come together to offer our specialist services under one roof. In a private setting we can offer treatments in a timelier fashion and without the constraints that can come with the NHS. Our long-term plan is to bring other AHP services to the clinic such as podiatry, speech and language therapy and dietetics.

DO YOU WORK WITH WOMEN OF ALL AGES? I work with women (and men) of all ages, but I have found that, compared to when I started all those years ago, women are presenting at a much younger age. Women are more informed and are much better about looking after themselves.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PROBLEMS THAT YOU TREAT? I treat bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and pregnancy related back and pelvic pain. I also offer a ‘Mummy Matters’ postnatal check – this helps to identify any issues that have arisen due to pregnancy and childbirth and can help prevent issues from arising in the future.

WHAT COMMON PROBLEMS ARE EASILY TREATED? Each patient comes with an incredibly unique story – sometimes they are treated very easily and sometimes it takes a bit more work. Each patient has an initial assessment, and a treatment plan is put in place – they are then reassessed at each session. Sometimes two or three sessions is enough and for others the rehab programme is more extensive – it completely depends on the severity and longevity of their symptoms.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ASSESSMENT? During an assessment, a full history of the presenting condition is taken along with a general medical history. Usually, an internal examination is carried out, but this is only done with the full consent of the patient. If a patient is really not keen on an internal, we can still do an external exam and work from there.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NERVOUS PATIENTS? As I have been doing this work for so long, I feel that I can very easily make patients feel at ease with what is happening. I take my time and explain exactly what I am going to do as we go along. I also reassure women that we don’t have to do anything they are not happy with. Patients frequently comment on how I make them feel relaxed and make an oftenembarrassing issue easy to discuss.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WOMEN WHO FEEL EMBARRASSED ABOUT A CONDITION THEY HAVE? Pelvic floor dysfunctions are such a common occurrence but, because it’s not talked about, women feel isolated and embarrassed. Women need to be informed about these conditions, need to know how common they are and need to know that help is available. It’s only by informing and empowering women that we take the embarrassment out of it. There isn’t too much that I haven’t seen or heard at this stage so there is no reason for any woman to be too embarrassed to reach out.

IF A WOMAN IS READING THIS RIGHT NOW, AND HAS A CONDITION SHE FEELS TOO EMBARRASSED TO SPEAK TO HER GP ABOUT, WHAT CAN SHE DO? The great thing about the clinic is that it bypasses the ‘middleman’ and takes the patient straight to the source of treatment. Whilst we do take referrals from private sector consultants most of our patients self-refer. So, a quick call, message or email will allow a patient to arrange an appointment at a day and time that suits them. We also offer evening and weekend appointments which a lot of women find more suitable.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I am deeply passionate about the work that I do as I see the huge impact these problems have on a woman’s overall quality of life. Whilst curing some of the issues that women present with may not be possible the best part of my job is seeing women make huge improvements in their symptoms allowing them to do the things they want to do and go the places they want to go.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OPENNESS AROUND WOMEN’S HEALTH ISSUES? I would love to see more openness around women’s health issues which was why I wanted to do a monthly article for the magazine. I saw it as the perfect platform to get the information out there so that women would know they are not alone and that there should be no shame or secrecy around their experiences. Attitudes are definitely changing, and women are definitely less likely to accept that this is just how life should be because they’ve had a baby or they’re going through the menopause. A simple conversation could be the first steps in a journey to recovery and early intervention can prevent those issues from becoming the thing that keeps you back.

Hope for the future at North West Independent Hospital The team at North West Independent Hospital are raising awareness of mental health issues as it is revealed that over 162,000 people are waiting more than a year for NHS appointments. The staff at North West Independent Hospital performed the online sensation, the Jerusalema Dance, to create awareness of mental health issues and to remind everyone to get their vaccine and support the NHS. Across the world videos of the Jerusalema Dance performed by doctors, nurses, police officers and other frontline workers have been going viral. And at North West Regional Hospital, the staff enjoyed getting involved as it gave them the opportunity to smile and celebrate the fact that soon we should slowly be emerging from lockdown. As healthcare professionals, the team are well aware that many people are experiencing difficult feelings and emotions about coronavirus. This may be a fear of getting sick, the government restrictions, or feeling hopeless about when the pandemic might end. All these can manifest themselves into serious health issues. Taking care of mental health is so important and they hope that if they can bring a smile to someone’s face watching the professionals at the hospital dancing, it is well worth it.

Leanne, Deirdre, Jodie and Jamie.

They also want the community to understand the importance of getting the vaccine, and how by getting vaccinated you can restrict the spread of the virus, protect communities, and allow everyone to get back to some form of normality where we can meet friends and family without the fear of causing untold suffering. The Jerusalema Dance was organised by the hospital management as part of the employee welfare programme. The staff have been under extreme pressure dealing with thousands of outpatients and inpatients during lockdown and supporting the NHS. The frontline staff have coped fantastically during these extraordinary times and the dance challenge was a break from the norm and a bit of light entertainment for all the staff to get involved in.

Ann, Maria and Sarah . Bobby, Tonia and Finola.

The latest statistics suggest that the backlog for care is worse than expected, and the 162,000 people waiting more than a year for care is only the tip of the iceberg. There have been just under 4 million fewer referrals for hospital care since March this year compared to the same time last year, with more patients having their conditions managed by their GP or in the community. It is not clear how many more people will need urgent or routine care next year as a result, but this can only add to the considerable backlog of 4.4 million people waiting for care.

Tonia

The NHS went into Covid-19 with a workforce crisis and rising waits for care. Even with the positive news of a vaccine, the impact of Covid-19 on waiting times for NHS patients will be felt for years to come. The knock-on effect from this has been felt within hospitals like North West Independent Hospital as they help the NHS with their backlog. At North West Independent Hospital, they hope by liking and sharing their social media video post they can reach as many people as possible as we finally emerge from this very dark time.

SKINPEN MEDICAL MICRO-NEEDLING The Celebrity must have treatment for 2021!

Celebrity Endorsements – SkinPen treatment has openly been endorsed by Victoria Beckham, who filmed herself having the treatment and posted it onto her Instagram. Amanda Holden went live on Heart Radio and her own Instagram to speak about the great results she has enjoyed.

WHAT IS SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING & HOW DOES IT WORK? SkinPen Precision is an award-winning mechanical micro-needling device that organically stimulates the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As we age, our skin’s natural architecture deteriorates, Collagen depletes, and ageing signs set in. This deterioration leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, and uneven skin texture. SkinPen comfortably creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. This process results in the formation and remodelling of Collagen, which supports the underlying tissue. Results continue to work up to 4-6 months, producing 400% more Collagen in a single treatment – A course of 3 treatments is usually recommended for optimal results. We may also combine or alternate with other treatment options alongside a tailored skincare regime, all of which we would discuss at consultation. SkinPen microneedling is a natural, organic treatment, which is non-invasive, with zero downtime. KELLY’S PATCH SAUVIGNON BLANC ‘ZIPPY, FULL BODIED WITH FRUIT AROMAS’

Kellyʼs Patch Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc (all four wines are 100% of their varietal) and is a well balanced medium bodied wine, full of tropical fruit aromas and flavours like passion fruit, pineapple as well as zippy gooseberry and there are slight herby hints like when you cut into a fresh green pepper. This is an easy drinking white, great on its own but would go well with fish, chicken or salads.

“THE END IS NEAR” Local Women columnist Hollie Campbell is on the countdown to warmer days, shopping and meeting her new baby.

The easing of restrictions are in sight and I have 10 weeks to go until I have my baby. I would have loved to have had a few months working behind me before my baby arrives, but at this stage it doesn’t look likely. I’m looking forward to the brighter, warmer evenings, meeting up with friends and family and some normality in general. I can’t wait to go into baby shops and look at all the baby clothes and accessories - once I know if it’s pink or blue, I’m buying. I have picked my pram from Finney’s Pram & Nursery Specialist in Newry as I feel it’s more important now more than ever to support and shop local. They have been so helpful through this lockdown making it all easier for me. Pregnancy is such an amazing blessing that I’m forever thankful for, but I don’t think anything prepares you for the big changes to your body, your mood and your energy. But each wee kick reminds you it’s all perfectly normal and the best thing in the world. I was feeling guilty complaining about it but anything I said was true, it’s a massive change and we are allowed to complain now and again, we are only human! I can’t wait to fit back into my normal clothes and go summer shopping with my baba. Better days are coming for us all. We did it! Lots of love,

Lockdown skin - it’s a thing! SKINCARE EXPERT ANDREA WATTERS FROM ROUGE BEAUTY CLINIC EXPLAINS HOW YOU CAN DEAL WITH TIRED, STRESSED SKIN FROM HOME.

Is your skin stressed? Especially now during lockdown, we are feeling more anxiety, and this is a massive factor that can affect our skin.We are all feeling the stress of working from home, home-schooling our kids, and being confined to our homes. Did you know when we are stressed our body produces the hormone cortisol which causes inflammation and excess oil production, which in time causes us to break out? We call this our fight or flight hormone. Side effects of stress can be lack of sleep and reduced appetite – and a few more glasses of wine than usual are also culprits in the breakouts returning.

Routine is key Be consistent with your skincare and don’t use too many products. I recommend keeping it simple, and stay away from the bad habits like picking and squeezing. I recommend using a purifying spot treatment as this will rapidly target stubborn acne blemishes and will help prevent new ones from forming thanks to the purifying and astringent action. It will quickly dry imperfections encouraging their reduction in a short time.

Probiotics I would also recommend probiotic cleansers and toners. We stock the most amazing duo within our Dibi Milano range. We are aware of the potential of prebiotics for the gut and we have now become increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining healthy skin microbiome, and the role this plays in supporting healthy skin barrier function. Probiotics in skincare are being considered for their antiinflammatory properties. They lower the inflammation of the skin. And because of this they are really good for treating sensitivity within our skins.

Hygiene Washing your pillowcases daily and using anti-bacterial wipes to clean your mobile devices

will help to fight against the spread of bacteria that causes our skin to break out with stubborn spots.

Use a masque Don’t become lax in your skincare routines - continue with your daily morning and evening routines. In addition, I recommend using a masque treatment two times a week. My absolute favourite at the minute has to be Dibi Milano magnific sheet masks which are fabulous for tired, stressed skin that needs a boost of energy. The masque has all the vital ingredients to help brighten and tighten your skin, leaving it feeling more revitalised and more youthful. These masques come in a pack of five that are presoaked so it’s like using a professional mask at home. For those looking for a two in one, the lift creator peeling mask not only removes the outer-most layers of dead skin to reveal brighter skin, but it also tightens and firms your skin, improving the appearance of acne scarring and pigmentation.

Use sunscreen Name one skincare product that works immediately upon application, and continues to keep your face looking healthy, wrinkle free, and youthful for years to come? For one head scratching reason or another, most of you don’t wear it year round! I’m talking about sunscreen. While many of you wear it during the summer months, here’s the reality: you’ve got to wear sunscreen every day of the year, come rain or shine. Ultraviolet rays that are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer are always present. They are independent of cold or hot weather and are not blocked by clouds. On overcast days, the best way to protect your skin is with sun protection. This will be the last product you will apply before you apply your makeup.

Vitamin D In winter months, we are missing our daily rays and vitamin D is so important for cell development. It is important to supplement your diet with vitamin D daily at the moment.

WHY VITAMIN D IS SO IMPORTANT DURING THE PANDEMIC

At Chemist Connect, they have a range of Vitamin D supplements that will boost your immune system and help give you the very best fighting chance against COVID-19. Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic we have heard time and time again that we must take Vitamin D supplements to reduce the severity of the disease. Many people ask, “What exactly is Vitamin D?” and “Why has it suddenly become so important?” or “Do I not already get enough of this Vitamin by eating a healthy balanced diet?” Vitamin D is a fat-soluble compound informally known as the ‘sunshine vitamin.’ This is because it is naturally produced in the body in response to sunlight. However, it is also obtained through diet, in foods such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolks and certain fortified cereals. This vitamin plays a critical role in promoting immune and anti-inflammatory responses. In fact, the vitamin is so important for immune function that low levels of vitamin D have been associated with increased susceptibility to infection, disease, and immune-related disorders. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic it has been shown in multiple studies across Europe that patients with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to require hospitalisation post exposure to COVID-19, relative to those with sufficient Vitamin D levels. Like many other northern European countries, Ireland as a whole has limited sunlight exposure meaning most people will not achieve adequate Vitamin D levels. Indeed, one local hospital reported that persons living in their area had alarmingly low blood levels of the nutrient. After examining 10,000 Vitamin D test results, an osteoporosis specialist, found that 75% of the samples tested had insufficient Vitamin D levels and 12% were extremely low. The

prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency across the country highlights that most people will achieve suboptimal levels of Vitamin D without taking nutritional supplements. For the average Adult in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it is recommended that a nutritional supplement of 20-25micrograms (1000IU) is taken every day to build up a sufficient level of Vitamin D. This has become so important that leading Medical Journals such as ‘The Irish Medical Journal’ have advised “that all older adults, hospital inpatients, nursing home residents and other vulnerable groups be urgently supplemented with this dose of Vitamin D to enhance their resistance to COVID-19, and that this advice be quickly extended to the general adult population.” We understand that the idea of taking daily supplements may be off putting to many. That indeed many individuals may already lead healthy lives with a very good diet and get plenty of outdoor exercise. However, even when taking these factors into account unless we can make the old Nursery Rhyme of “Rain, Rain go away” and actually make the rain stop and allow us to get more daily sunshine, then the vast majority of us will need to take Vitamin D supplementation to achieve optimum levels. These supplements come in a range of different forms including but not limited to tablets, sprays, liquid, and even oral drops for children. Most formulations are available to buy over the counter in the majority of pharmacies at a relatively inexpensive price.

Vitamin D comes in a large range of doses, from 400IU drops for children, up to 2000IU tablets for adults. By and large the most popular option for adults is a once-a-day 1000IU tablet for those aged 12 years and up. If building up an adequate Vitamin D level sounds like something you would like to achieve, we advise you start this journey as soon as possible. Vitamin D being a fat-soluble vitamin takes longer than most vitamins to build to optimal levels. It is estimated that with supplementation it takes around three to four months before it accumulates to sufficient levels in the body, in order to give you an optimal immune response. Whilst this is by no means a message of ‘if you take Vitamin D supplementation you will be immune from being hospitalised by COVID-19,’ nor is the take home that Vitamin D supplementation is an alternative to receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. However, on the basis of all the clinical information that is now available, we can be sure that Vitamin D will boost your immune system and help give you the very best fighting chance during this pandemic. We would happily invite you to pop into one your local Chemist Connect branches and talk further with our staff instore or check out our range of Vitamin D products online. There are always trained staff available who can provide advice on our Vitamin D product range. We will always do our best to advise you on which product will be most useful for you, your family, and your lifestyle. Stay healthy and stay safe folks during these hard times!

Our lockdown story: We got married in December after initially postponing our wedding from 31/07/20. We had been planning our ceremony for January but when we saw the new restrictions announced on Thursday, 18th December, we decided we had to get married before Christmas. With four days to plan our wedding, we didn’t know who would be available to attend but we were surrounded by 25 of our closest friends and family (some unfortunately couldn’t attend due to isolating) but it was the most relaxing and enjoyable day. We couldn’t have asked for better!

Our lockdown story: As we were in lockdown, a reception wasn’t possible. We had chosen The Royal Hotel, Cookstown. Our lockdown wedding story: Our wedding story hasn’t been simple to say the least. We were originally meant to get married back on the 4th April, 2020. Before Christmas, as we approached our third wedding date of 5th March, we decided we would secretly get married before that with our little dog and the two families in case there happened to be another lockdown that would have meant postponing our weddings plans yet again. We are never going to give up on our dream wedding at Galgorm, so we kept this wedding low key and completely different to how our wedding party will actually look - we weren’t giving away any clues! This was also one of the reasons why I didn’t wear my wedding dress. With restrictions, numbers were limited and

I didn’t want extended family or close friends to see my wedding dress in a picture for the first time. I want everyone including myself to experience that feeling of the first look. I know your wedding dress is what most people say you should get married in but Kyle and I both agreed to save it. It didn’t matter what we wore when we said ‘I do’, we love each other and no matter what, it was still going to one of the happiest days of our lives. This also went for our bridal party, we decided that Day 1 wedding would only consist of our little family, Bride, Groom and the most adorable Best Man whilst Day 2 will consist of our bridal party in their full wedding attire!

happier, the fact that we know our full wedding day is still ahead of us just makes us even more excited! We can’t wait!

Linda from Leaf Designs is like my fairy godmother. How amazing were her displays? Never mind the bouquet. We also asked our wee Gemma (Gemma’s Cookie Co) and her lovely hubby, John (John Bakes Cakes) to make us up some cookie favours and boxes of cupcakes in some of our wedding cake flavours that we have chosen. We thought this would be a nice touch to give to our families as a little taster for Day 2. I think one of the reasons that we have stayed so upbeat during this wedding process is because of the support we Galgorm were nothing short of amazing get from suppliers like these. and we are so grateful that we were able to get married in our special place with Why have one wedding day when you our loved ones!
