Worried about an abnormal cervical screening result? You don’t have to wait. Have you recently received an abnormal result for a smear test? Kingsbridge Private Hospital North West have just relaunched their Colposcopy Clinic and are ready to see you. In Northern Ireland, all women aged 25–49 are encouraged to attend for cervical smear screenings every 3 years. Women who are older, are encouraged to attend every 5 years. Receiving regular smear tests can prevent you from developing cervical cancer. Some women are worried about attending for a smear, maybe due to embarrassment or fear, and put off having their scheduled screening. However, there is nothing to worry about as the procedure is usually more uncomfortable then painful. Cervical Screening can also save your life. What happens if my results identify cell changes? Sometimes a smear result will show cell changes in the lining of the cervix. While many cell changes go away on their own, some may develop into cancer over time, if left untreated. Receiving news that your smear result has identified these cell changes can be a worrying and stressful time. Our expert team of Consultants recognise this and aim to identify and treat these cell changes as quickly as possible for you. At the Coloscopy Clinic in Kingsbridge Private Hospital we have a range of experts in this field, all based in a reassuring, friendly environment. You can receive your test and result in 5–10 days. What is a Colposcopy? Although a smear test is a quick and simple way to identify any cell changes, it unfortunately will not show these changes in full detail; to investigate these changes further we need colposcopy. This is a simple procedure used to look at the cervix using magnification and light which allows for closer inspection and provides greater detail when looking at any changes. Colposcopy can be used to both diagnose and treat cell changes identified by your smear test. It can also be used to find out the cause of problems such as unusual vaginal bleeding.

What will happen at my appointment? Our clinical experts are here to help and will guide you through each procedure. Colposcopy usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes; the Consultant will look at the cervix directly under magnification to determine if there is any abnormality that could be a pre-cancerous change and will discuss your options accordingly. If cell changes requiring immediate treatment are not apparent at the time of the investigation, then small samples can be obtained to send for additional analysis Occasionally, cell changes may be clearly evident during the colposcopy procedure. In this instance your Consultant will discuss the variety of different options available allowing you to make an informed decision on your treatment pathway. Kingsbridge North West now also offer LLETZ treatment to remove any identified changes immediately. This is a very successful treatment and the vast majority of women return to normal screening following this procedure. It can be performed under local anaesthetic, and you can go home on the same day. All appropriate follow ups will be organised depending on your results. Colposcopy Test Results Sometimes treatment is not recommended until your biopsy results come back (5–10 days later). In these cases, you will need to come back for a review appointment. At this appointment your Consultant will discuss the results with you, and the options for treatment if any is required. Not everyone who has a colposcopy will need treatment. If you only have a mild abnormality, it might be suggested that you have a repeat colposcopy in 12 months. The changes in the neck of your womb (cervix) may return to normal by themselves and they may just need monitoring.
