Glittering PINK Partners with Cancer Focus NI

Jack Murphy Jewellers in Newry has teamed up with Cancer Focus Northern Ireland to help promote breast cancer awareness month in October through a number of activities including a magnificent £260 giveaway.

T

he month-long partnership kicked off with a special pink launch day on Thursday 24th September when the jewellers unveiled their glittering pink sapphire window display. The local business is donating two beautiful pieces of jewellery to the value of £260 as part of a competition with Cancer Focus NI. To enter you need to sign up to the charity’s Support Your Girls campaign to have a virtual girls’ night in and commit to raising at least £50 to help raise funds for a new support service for younger women who get breast cancer. The Support Your Girls campaign, which runs from now until the end of October (breast cancer awareness month), also highlights signs of the disease and stresses the importance of checking your breasts regularly. During October, staff at Jack Murphy Jewellers are also planning a ‘wear pink to work’ day on Saturday 3rd October and will encourage their customers to join in – all carefully social distanced of course. Gemma Murphy, Partner and Manager, Jack Murphy Jewellers, said: “Cancer is an illness that affects so many people and one in ten women in Northern Ireland get breast cancer, which is a frightening statistic. “We wanted to join forces with Cancer Focus NI to help raise awareness of this disease and to support all the wonderful work the charity does in our community.” Rosie Forsythe, Corporate Fundraising Manager, Cancer Focus NI, said: “We are delighted that Jack Murphy Jewellers has come on board with us for our annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign. “We know that there is a great need for more support among younger women who

have been diagnosed. With the money raised from girls’ night in events, we plan to provide a unique new six-week service that will give women a chance to speak to experts on a wide range of topics such as infertility and sexual relationships, as well as to meet others in a similar situation. “The young women we want to help are at a stage in their lives where they may be making big life choices, such as marriage and starting a family, or they may have young children to care for. A breast cancer diagnosis can dramatically change all their hopes and plans for the future. It is vital we have the best possible support in place for these women, especially now when there are so many other stresses and difficulties in life because of Covid-19.” Newry mum of two Joanne Clarke, who had a double mastectomy after she discovered she had the BRCA2 mutant gene, said: “I think

a new service for young women affected by this devastating disease is an inspirational idea. Young women have their own special set of problems to face and may have young children to look after during their illness. “It would be excellent for them to have access to experienced professionals who can answer their many questions. It’s also fantastic to have women your own age and in similar circumstances to talk to in confidence. I just wish this support had been available when I was fi rst diagnosed. It would have been invaluable.” One of the services Cancer Focus NI provides in Newry is specialist bra-fitting for women who’ve had breast surgery. You can fi nd out more about the Cancer Focus NI girls’ night in at www. cancerfocusni.org/girls. You can also make a donation in-store at Jack Murphy Jewellers throughout October.

Isn’t it amazing how quickly we have all adapted? I was thinking this the other day as I watched my son come off the school bus with his mask on. Last year it would have seemed very odd indeed, but yet there he is with his mask and wearing his PE kit to school on the days he has games. This is actually such a good idea as it stops him leaving his uniform all over the place and me constantly having to hunt down his clothes which he has abandoned in school. If one good thing has come out of the pandemic, kids wearing their PE kits to school on games days is one of them!

INTRODUCING THE DIRECTORY

I have finally got used to wearing a mask – although I do spend a considerable amount of time running back to my car because I’ve forgotten it! I wouldn’t dream of eating anything without using hand sanitiser and the thought of being out after 10pm makes me feel tired!

Have you ever struggled with sleepless nights because your baby won’t sleep? Are you stuck for ideas for a special party? Do you need a thoughtful gift for a loved one that shows them you really care?

Not being able to see family members is tough but my 75-year-old mum found a way to see me recently in spite of the restrictions. I’m not allowed to visit her, and she can’t come here. So, when she heard I had an interview to do on the north coast the other day she decided to tag along. While she can’t see me at home, she can see me in a shop, so she came along to Right Price Coleraine and we enjoyed a chat on one of the furniture displays after I had finished an interview. You see, where there’s a will, there’s a way! I hope you are all coping well and staying safe during these strange times. To cheer us up from the doom and gloom we have decided to start our Christmas shopping. The pandemic has taught us to be prepared - so let’s get those lists made and make a start on the shopping nice and early – before the aliens land! It is 2020 after all, anything could happen! At least Christmas is a nice distraction for us – even if it will be a little different this year. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and, as ever, if you have a story you’d like to share, please get in touch. Until next month,

MEET THE SUITORS Working in perfect partnership, celebrity tailor Chris Suitor and his beautiful wife Nichola tell Local Women how family is at the heart of everything they do. By Kim Kelly Portraits by Alexandra Barfoot

hris Suitor loves a challenge – so, when the man who would one day become his father-in-law said he would never get a

date with his daughter Nichola, it was game on!

Being told he could “never afford a girl like Nichola” made the young Chris even more determined to win over the stunning girl who he describes as the neighborhood’s “blonde bombshell.” He asked her for a date, and the rest, as they say, is history. “From childhood, Nichola lived round the corner from me in Dundonald but she tended to date those cool kind of bad boys,” laughs Chris. “I 8 | Local Women Magazine

used to look at her and think: ‘Wow!’ But we were both in relationships. “As soon as I knew she was single I had to ask her out. I just knew she was the one,” says Chris. At this point Nichola bursts out laughing and reminds her husband that he definitely can’t afford her – before regaling us with a story that I can’t tell you here about Chris’ bad behavior in the early days of their relationship. Oh Chris! But love won and 15 years, a marriage, two children and a dog later the couple are closer than ever. Always laughing and joking, and with Nichola constantly rolling her eyes at ‘Suitor’ as she calls her husband, they make a perfect couple. The banter between the two of them is nonstop and the pair are well known for their positive outlooks on life.

ƒ Chris and Nichola

They are very much a partnership, working together to raise their daughters Ava, 9, and Lois, 7, running the family business Suitor Brothers Tailoring, as well as Nichola’s own career as a Yoga teacher. It’s a busy life, because as well as that there is charity work, MC-ing at boxing and a little social media influencing. But family lies at the heart of the success and happiness of the Suitors, both professionally and personally – and they always make time for each other. Chris explains: “I like to think I am good husband to Nichola, and she is an amazing wife. Not a day goes past that I don’t tell her how beautiful and special she is. And she is so good to me. She looks after me and the girls so well and is a great wife and mum.” Although they get asked to all the local social events, they are a devoted couple who love nothing more than spending time together at home with their daughters. Through Chris’ social media we can follow their daily lives and he has built up a huge following by simply being himself online. Love it or loathe it, he is a little ray of sunshine with his chirpy GGG mantra (get up, get out, get at it!) and every day we follow him travelling to work, meeting people in his shop, interacting with his kids and just being Chris Suitor. Not one to shy away from issues, he has opened up about being trolled online and about his pain following the sudden death of his good friend radio presenter Stephen Clements earlier this year. Chris uses his large social media platform to raise awareness of mental health issues and he talks daily about positivity, reaching out to people who may be struggling. But his online content is largely lighthearted and upbeat, and he engages with his followers with questions and polls. And of course, Nichola is a constant presence on his social media where he refers to her as ‘The Blade!’

any women reading this want to change their lives but just can’t get started - what do you say to them?

I know how daunting it can be to wake up one day and suddenly not like what you see. I think for many women weight gain can happen over many years and we try not to take much notice of it. ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE?

My earlier career was as an operations manager in a recruitment firm helping top end executives change jobs. I thought I had massive job satisfaction until I started initially part time to help people lose weight. Oh boy, the difference was immense, the joy that people had when they lost a couple of pounds never mind when they lost stones was unbelievable and knowing that you are changing lives for the better forever it is the best feeling in the world.

AND, SO IN THE MIDST OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC YOU HAVE OPENED A SECOND BUSINESS? Yes, crazy to many, but I guess if you have dreams and goals then you should go for it. We had decided to open a new fashion store 11:11 Bang On Trend back in 2019, so when lockdown hit plans were already in motion. Thankfully, we were able to work with suppliers when our original opening date of May was pushed back until September, it gave us time to make the store even more amazing! 11:11 Bang On Trend truly is the store of your dreams and we have some stunning pieces in store. Fashion excites me and getting dressed up keeps me motivated and wanting to feel amazing every day.

THE PERFECT DAY OUT Local Women columnist Lesley McGarrity enjoys a little Game of Thrones action as she visits the filming locations close to home.

I

ignored Game of Thrones for eight years then inhaled it in eight weeks.

shoot medieval arrows using ancient bows. It was the best thing I have done to date this year!

If you’ve watched and re-watched every episode of Game of Thrones (well, I would forgive you for skipping the final season) then you’ll likely jump at the chance to set foot in the Seven Kingdoms for real!

You can even meet the real Direwolves from the movie, Odin and Thor (they are brothers and are named after the Old Viking Gods in real life) played Summer and Grey Wind. They starred in many scenes including the ‘finding of the Direwolf puppies’ scene, and you can meet them on your tour at their home Winterfell Castle by prior booking when you book your Winterfell adventure.

When Game of Thrones first came out, I did not see the fascination with it at all, there was far too much sex and nudity in the first series and sometimes I really can be a prude. Anyway, I stuck with it and binged watched it and I have to, I didn’t just like it - I LOVED IT.

So, needless to say I jumped at the chance of visiting Winterfell, with our friends Sam and Max who are massive GOT fans and who were over visiting us from England. These two, by the way are no strangers themselves to appearing on TV (Channel 4 coming soon - say no more!) Any GOT fan worth their salt will know that of course King’s Landing is basically Dubrovnik with the addition of some swords, an iron throne and occasionally a couple of dragons. But plenty of its most iconic backdrops are actually found right here in glorious Northern Ireland. So, I took the boys to breathe fire into their day with a visit to the Winterfell Castle movie set - the film location where Bran Stark was pushed from the window sill back in Season One - plus any more pivotal scenes. We had a private Game o f Thrones tour with our own guide (who has acted in the main scenes of the show many times!) and I have to say his character was amazing! He took us all around Winterfell Castle and its vast 1000-acre estate. It has 20 key film locations on site, and it was a privilege to hear all the stories and see the CGI pictures. Will was 12 | Local Women Magazine

so knowledgeable and exciting. He scared the poop out of me I have to say, but I think that was just the character he was playing (or was it?) He shared fascinating stories about how the film sets were created onsite and some insider gossip about what the cast got up to behind-the-scenes (very interesting!) We also got to sit on the Iron Throne. Oh, I hear you say! The key locations we visited on this exclusive Game of Thrones private tour included; Winterfell Castle Courtyard (including exclusive access to Winterfell Archery Range Movie Set Experience, The Archway from Kings Roberts Arrival to Winterfell. The Castle Window Sill where Bran Stark falls from. The Mystical Tree under which Robb and Talissa secretly marry and the Twins Castle and the Red Wedding. I have to say the whole experience was unreal and we laughed from start to finish. But the best part for me, was meeting Will Winterfell’s Master-at-Arms, like I said he was initially quite scary and gave me a very hard time rocking up five minutes late. Let’s just say he has no tolerance for divas! But, after a while, he stopped waving his sword around and calmed himself down. I actually think he kind of warmed to us. He let us dress up in authentic Game of Thrones ‘Stark Family’ costumes. He then gave us archery instruction, which was amazing as he was one of the instructors who trained the cast of GOT. We got to stand exactly where Jon Snow, Rob Stark and Bran stood and

Odin and Thor were trained by the very talented and popular Caroline Benoist, including how to ‘howl’ on command. Caroline (just 26 years old), who also trained the dogs in the Harry Potter films, died suddenly in December 2010. The 5th episode in Season 1 ‘The Wolf and The Lion’ was dedicated to Caroline by HBO®. Guys this is must visit place! BOOK ONLINE AT www.gameofthrones-winterfelltours.com and say ‘hi’ to Will from me when you visit! And DO NOT BE LATE. HE REALLY

Banbridge’s Oonagh is a matchmaker Oonagh McAteer is helping lonely hearts find love the old-fashioned way with her bespoke dating agency.

By Maureen Coleman

Banbridge matchmaker is playing Cupid with her back to basics dating agency that offers a personal service to help lonely hearts find love. Oonagh McAteer, founder of Diamond Dates, says she was always interested in pairing up family and friends ever since she embarked on a wishful childhood project. “I remember when I was little my granny died and after a while, I decided my grandfather would suit my available granny on my other parent’s side. Needless to say, I was Jane Austen’s Emma in the making back then as my living grandparents had no desire to be paired up whatsoever,” she jokes. But her lifelong interest coupled with her own stints on well-known dating sites prompted her to become a professional matchmaker after experiencing the emotional pitfalls of the online modern dating game. Oonagh set up her business four years ago and now runs Diamond Dates near her home in Banbridge. She says the trials and tribulations of online dating are well documented, from being ignored or ‘ghosted’ after initial overtures, or profile photos from another century. “We’ve all experienced it. There’s being misled by people masquerading as young, free and single when they are neither, or profiles that are not even a real person on some sites. It can seem as if life is made up of dating disasters and hopes can quickly fade of finding ‘the one.’ “The path to my true love certainly didn’t run smooth and I had any number of mismatches and disasters that I laugh and shudder at in 14 | Local Women Magazine

equal measure. “I met my husband online and I didn’t like putting all that information out there or not knowing if people were real. I wished I could call someone and let them sort it out for me and that’s how Diamond Dates started.” So, if you have done multiple rounds on wellknown dating apps to the point of desperation, worry no more, says Oonagh, (39) whose agency operates across Northern Ireland and the border counties. “Using a dating agency rather than online means an actual person is there to talk to and they can help and advise you. Some people are out of practice dating and the scene has changed so much, but with an agency you know that the people are real, and they won’t disappear without explanation.

“My clients tell me what they want and like and I go and find that person for them.”

“Interestingly, lots of my new clients only realised how alone they were during lockdown. Where you had a person getting social interaction and meeting people at the pub, nightclub or on events like hen and stag parties, weddings and concerts, they only realised that their social life had all gone and they were left feeling lonely.” Oonagh says she is always on the lookout for prospective suitors.

“I could be on Facebook or doing something in personal, private and bespoke service. My clients tell me what they want and like and I go and find my day where I might come across someone who is available and who would possibly suit a client. HOW

A-P EEL I NG!

Have you tried a chemical peel? Younique Belfast’s Skin Expert Carla Chambers on the transformative benefits of chemical peels. THE PEEL SEASON IS HERE!

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Winter is the perfect time to get a chemical peel as it reduces the possibility of sun damage. Even though you still have to protect your skin with sunscreen, your skin will not be as exposed to UVA/UVB rays. This makes it the best time to get a peel because you can keep your newly revealed skin protected, treating your newly resurfaced skin like a newborn baby, protecting, nourishing and hydrating it.

While the term chemical peel sounds somewhat scary, The reality is they are not. They can be a seriously effective skincare solution targeting a variety of skin concerns. This procedure is used to improve the appearance of skin on your face, neck, hands and décolletage. A chemical solution (a mild acid) is applied to the exposed skin which causes it to exfoliate and later, peel off. The underlying layers that are exposed will be smoother, healthier and more radiant. Chemical peels work their magic in several ways: They accelerate skin cell turnover, lighten pigmentation and stimulate underlying collagen production. This is why chemical peels are my favourite treatment.

In fact, if you’re receiving a series of chemical peels spaced over several months, you can finish them before the winter season is over. A course of peels will always receive better results than a one of treatment.

Chemical peels transform the skin. It’s important to understand that you may experience a tingling sensation when the peel is applied, followed by skin irritation and redness, which fades over time. There are different levels of chemical peels, from milder treatments to deeper peels that have more downtime. There are a variety of different options of chemical peels here at Younique Aesthetics Belfast in our dedicated peel bar - and we love working with you to select the very best peel for you based on your skin needs. A favourite homecare peel product of mine and my clients is the Enzyme Peel Alumier MD. It is to be used between treatments which helps maximize and maintain the results from a chemical peel. It also aids the deeper penetration of treatment serums and other skincare products. The Enzyme Peel is a highly effective exfoliator that combines 10% lactic acid with fruit enzymes to exfoliate dead skin leaving the skin super smooth and radiant. Use once or twice a week to keep your skin HEALTHY and GLOWING!

The Glow Peel combines lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol which creates a multipurpose resurfacing solution which is AMAZING for minimizing the appearance of fine lines, pores, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation issues like age spots, discolouration, and uneven skin tone.

Our Alumier MD Glow Peel is on offer as part You can contact me at Younique Belfast of our Autumn Special to start your skin journey and let me help which is three peels for the price of two for you love the skin you’re in.

Teal-ly nice! Design expert Donna Monteith showcases gorgeous shades of ‘teal’ – a beautiful, versatile classic for walls, furniture and accessories. Hi everyone, I trust everyone is challenging times.

well

during

these

Let’s look at a wonderful colour inspiration that will transform your home as we come into the winter months. I have been focusing this past couple of months on lots of colour accents and teal has been a popular choice with my clients, especially teamed up with other colours. Teal is a highly versatile colour. It can be cool and soothing. It can be a rich and striking accent colour. It can even be a vivid, lively shade. Teal is not blue, not green, and not turquoise. Teal is mysterious and intriguing, with a hint of timelessness . Teal can work for almost any room in your home. It can help balance out homey warmth or work together with bright tones to liven up a space. Teal is a stunning colour and so many colours work with it. Colours that go well with teal are almost as varied and versatile as the colour itself. Choose colours based on the mood you’re going for.

The feel of a particular teal can be changed significantly depending on what colours you use it with. Teamed with white, teal is striking, coral makes it dramatic and bold, neutrals give teal a softer edge, with greys it gives a soothing effect, tan or cream bring in warmth. Teal and pink are a fun colour palette. This colour scheme adds in a lively feminine touch. It’s perfect for a little girl’s room. Teal pairs nicely with dusty rose or rusty red giving a distinct vintage, lived-in look that can be instantly homey and soothing. Teal and chartreuse come together to really pull out the blue undertones. This is very, very bold colour combination. It will instantly liven up any space. So, you see teal really is a versatile colour to work with. In some of the projects I’ve been working on we have made custom headboards, upholstery and curtain design and also had commissioned art for our Larne clients. Don’t forget my new studio is opening very soon. Should you need to book a consultation, I would be delighted to hear from you. Until next month,

“I CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING!” No one has missed out on more during the Covid-19 pandemic than our teens. But, rather than complain, Bangor teenager Paige Robinson used her time off school and lack of social life to make some improvements in her life. In fact, the 14-year-old says lockdown was a life changing experience for her. Here Paige tells Local Women how she learned a lot about herself - with a little help from her mum.

A

t the start of 2020 I thought it was just another year, I was picking my GCSEs and planning for the next two years of school. I was hanging around with my friends, snacking in between meals and eating all the wrong stuff. I was sitting about and not moving, playing on my phone - and social media seemed so important. Then lockdown started – and of course home-schooling. At first, we had to follow the school timetable but soon my mum realised that home-schooling could be so much more. My mum Selina is a nurse, so she works shifts and was and is still working in the craziness of this pandemic. Mum wanted to use the time to do much more than academic work and she decided to teach us some more unusual skills. Mum decided to implement a life skills class each day which was things like gardening, cooking, washing, cleaning and new hobbies.

SPOILT FOR CHOICE WITH LOCAL PRODUCE

Using the freshest of local ingredients and with a little inspiration from their visits to Portugal, Copper Restaurant at the foot of the Mournes is at the forefront of the hospitality renaissance. Local Women meets owners Morgan and Caroline Morrison who have put Newcastle, Co Down on the map for foodies. YOU AND MORGAN ARE ALREADY WELL KNOWN IN THE AREA FOR YOUR SUCCESSFUL TAKEWAY RESTAURANTS – SO, HOW DID THE IDEA FOR A SIT-DOWN RESTAURANT DEVELOP?

My husband Morgan and I began our business in 2006 when we opened a fish and chip takeaway in Downpatrick called Docs. This proved successful for us and was followed by another two establishments in Ardglass and then Newcastle. The Newcastle Docs is a 75-seater bistro restaurant. The Newcastle bistro opened six years ago, and it planted the seed that we could go further and open a licensed seafood and steakhouse. This is a continuation of the seafood theme.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FROM HAVING THE INITIAL IDEA TO OPENING YOUR DOORS?

The idea had probably been planted after we opened Docs in Newcastle so probably about five years. It was a natural progression for us.

HOW DID LOCKDOWN AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS?

WHAT ARE YOUR WORK BACKGROUNDS?

Lockdown affected everyone’s business to some degree. Copper was only open for six weeks before lockdown. Lockdown has made us all go back to basics in our businesses. It has shown that you have to be proactive and able to change your operations immediately, should that be changing to a takeaway system or changing your working hours. Everyone has found challenges and we are so grateful to our staff and customers who have shown they have faith in us. Their support has been incredible.

Morgan was in car sales and I did a business degree. We both enjoyed working with the public but had no catering experience in our background. It was just something we felt we had to do.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE NEWCASTLE FOR THE LOCATION?

We have always liked the vibe in Newcastle. It is a great town to work in. The people are welcoming, and we feel at home there. A seaside location is a great advantage.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND COPPER RESTAURANT?

We holiday quite a bit in Portugal and always enjoyed the simple way that the Portuguese serve fresh fish. It comes straight off a chargrill and is fresh and delicious. It does not need to be dressed up. The ingredients speak for themselves. We have tried to follow this ethos in Copper. We use the best seafood and steak that we can source and let the food do the talking. We have a Josper Grill which we cook on. This gives us the authentic chargrilled taste.

HOW IMPORTANT IS USING LOCALLY SOURCED INGREDIENTS?

This is very important to us. Especially living in the area we do, we are completely spoiled with fabulous produce and local artisan suppliers who operate on the world stage. We love to support these local suppliers who in turn are so supportive to us. 22 | Local Women Magazine

WHAT ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS’ FAVOURITE DISHES?

That’s a good question! At the minute it is difficult to think too far ahead. Any plans we had for this year have not materialised. We hope to get the Loft Bar open. It is based upstairs at Copper and is an amazing space to enjoy pre or post meal drinks or some small plates. It has great views of the sea and has an outside balcony.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY LIFE WITH

The steaks are always a favourite although WORK LIFE? my personal favourite is a chargrilled whole We have two children, Cora who is 14 and Charlie fish – delish! who is 11. It is difficult juggling work with a young family as anyone will tell you. other skin textural conditions. The TriBella Treatment consists of three different stages.

PHOTOFACIAL TriBella photofacial uses precise bursts of intense pulsed light to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and sun damage. The light targets and reduces the haemoglobin pigment inside visible blood vessels and dark pigmented spots. The result is glowing, younger-looking skin.

ANTI-AGING TriBella anti-aging* uses a comfortable combination of energy types to produce heat beneath the skin, helping to promote healthy blood flow and increase the production of collagen and elastic fibres. The result is skin that looks tighter and younger, and with fewer lines or wrinkles.

SKIN RESURFACING TriBella skin resurfacing improves skin texture by delivering energy deep into the skin, using tiny electrode pins to create micro-dermal wounds with minimal impact on the epidermis. As the skin heals, it naturally boosts collagen and elastin production for total skin renewal. The best candidate is someone with signs of skin aging and damage, such as lines, wrinkles, uneven complexion, or uneven texture. Venus Versa™ TriBella treatments work to improve the look of skin tone, elasticity, and texture. Three TriBella treatments are recommended for optimal results. You will see some results after the treatment series is complete, but full, best results are visible approximately three months after the last session. Please see one of our treatment providers, Aileen or Sandra and they will help you to decide what is the right course of action for your concerns. We will also discuss your own customized maintenance programme to ensure you continue to enjoy your youthful appearance.

DETOX YOUR SKIN AT YOUNQIUE BEAUTY SALON

Détoxygène at Younique Beauty Salon is an amazing new treatment that will leave your skin smooth, refined and younger looking than ever. Here at Younique Beauty Salon, we are excited to announce the launch of our new, Guinot Détoxygène facial treatment. Détoxygène is a reoxygenating and detoxifying facial treatment that removes pollution and toxins from the skin; improving cellular respiration in just one hour. Allowing your skin to breathe and look healthier. Pollution and toxins are constantly being collected by the skin. This results in a build-up that causes the skin to become asphyxiated and leaving our completion dull and lacking radiance. All skin types may become asphyxiated and not just in urban areas. Atmospheric pollution such as exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, industrial pollution, and dust are examples of the environmental pollutions that build up on your skin every day. Preventing the skin from breathing properly. The human body naturally produces toxins which are then eliminated through the skin as sweat. Our diet, sleep and stress levels can also upset our skin’s natural balance and have an effect on our skin.

SO HOW DOES THE DÉTOXYGÈNE FACIAL WORK? When you arrive for your Détoxygène treatment, our therapists will start off with a Détoxygène exfoliation. Using enzymatic and mechanical exfoliation to remove the dead skin cells that are loaded with toxins and particles. Leaving you with a smooth and refined skin texture.

The Détoxygène facial will allow you to leave our salon with skin that is moisturised, firm and protected against the harmful effects of pollution. The Détoxygène facial is suitable for all ages and skin types.

Next is the Détoxygène detoxifying mask, which will act as a ‘pollution magnet’ to pick up and eliminate pollution particles, toxins and any impurities. Finally, the Détoxygène reoxygenating massage will stimulate the skin’s microcirculation and increase the oxygen uptake of cells, therefore boosting cell metabolism.

At Younique Beauty Salon, we offer a range of other Guinot facials; get in touch now for more information. Appointments can be booked online through the Younique website: www.younique.ie Facebook or Instagram or download our ‘Younique’ app. Alternatively contact reception on 028 3026 7606

NATURAL FACE LIFT SERUM GIFTED BY NATURE, CREATED BY ALBERTO BIANCHI a young boy, Alberto Bianchi, who is our inspiration was living with his grandfather in a small village in Sicily helping him tend his herb and plant garden. Alberto’s grandfather was famous in the local area for preparing lotions for various conditions including, most importantly, skin conditions. any of us women, as we get older, look in a mirror and could scream! It’s happening, we don’t want to be reminded we are losing our looks, the dreaded lines and wrinkles are appearing, we are sure many were not there the previous day, it’s all changing too fast. The longer a home is on the market the less chance you have of getting that premium price, so speed is of the essence. When selling, cutting corners isn’t an option. Choose an innovative agent such as Mayfair & Morgan who are up to date on the latest marketing strategies and can stage your home like it’s a palace to pull in those potential buyers.

Advice from the Selling Sunset Northern Ireland ladies “Staging a home is all about how you prepare and present the property for photography. People won’t arrange a viewing, let alone buy it, if they aren’t intrigued by your online listing.” Christine Keenan “You want to give buyers every reason to imagine themselves living in the house. So, dress your home just as you would dress if you were going on a date – dress to impress!” Kerry Green

to form an impression of the inside when they walk in the front door. Set the stage: Make the entrance hall look spacious, bright and welcoming. Remove all coats and shoes, buy a new doormat, have extra lighting and add some fragrance with scented candles or aroma sachets. Make sure to hang a statement mirror to open up the space. LIVING ROOM: This room gives buyers the feel for a lifestyle. A little effort to stage this room will help buyers imagine themselves living here. Set the stage: Light the fire if you have one, use extra lighting to create an ambient atmosphere and brighten any darker areas. Rearrange the furniture to show as much floor space as possible, remove personal family photos, mementos, and clear shelves of all but a few accessories.

“Potential buyers are looking for a home to help fulfil their dreams and lifestyle. There is no need to spend large amounts of money, as a few simple changes and our staging tips will get your property noticed and moving” Karen McClurkin.

Adding sparkle the Mayfair & Morgan way

KERB APPEAL: Many potential buyers will do a drive by before viewing so you need to entice them to want to go in. Set the stage: Spruce up the garden, have a noticeable house number, kill the weeds and have the grass cut regularly. Paint the front door a bold colour so it stands out. ENTRANCE/HALLWAY: A well-presented hallway sets the tone of a house. Buyers get the first chance

KITCHEN: Giving a tired kitchen a facelift always pays off. Set the stage: Clean every inch until it shines, remove everything from the worktops so buyers see the space. If countertop space is limited, put the utensils in drawers, remove the cookbooks, bread bin etc to free up the area. Put away the pet bowls and bedding and if possible, replace door handles, update countertop covers, and clean the oven, viewers will open it! Have the coffee brewing and the scones in the oven.

DINING AREA: Your goal is to make the room look like it’s used regularly and get the viewers to want to be sitting down to eat in this home. Set the stage: Get out your best china and lay the table. At the very least have a new tablecloth and a focal point such as a bowl of fruit or fresh flowers.

OUTSIDE SPACE: Buyers are putting more emphasis on their need for a garden. No matter how small, any outside space is premium. The garden needs to be a place of sanctuary and an additional living area. Set the stage: Invest in outdoor seating, potted plants, flowers and paint the fence to make the garden inviting and fresh. You can even add an outdoor mirror to break up walls if you have an enclosed space. A well presented garden can make a sale.

BEDROOM: We all want a big bedroom, so the trick is to make it look spacious. Create a comfortable, calm space and have the bed as centre stage – make people want to try it out! Set the stage: Clean crisp bed linen, well aired, no shoes, clothes visible, have the floor space cleared, turn on the lamps, remove anything of a personal nature including your electronics!

Our role as your estate agent is to gain maximum interest in your property. We provide all our homeowners a guide to staging their home and go that extra mile to assist with this for photography and viewings. We feel it is essential to have a good relationship with our clients so we can work together to get the property moving. GUIDING YOU THROUGH EVERY STEP OF THE LEGAL PROCESS

FLEXIBLE WORKING REQUESTS

Rosemary Connolly LL.B. L.L.M. rosemaryconnolly@solicitorsni.net Leanne McKeown LL.B., Solicitor leannemckeown@solicitorsni.net We are often contacted by employees who want to reduce or change their working hours but are unsure on the best way to approach this subject with their employer. Some people are even concerned that they may risk losing their job for bringing up the subject. It is important to note that all employees, with a minimum of 26 continuous weeks service at the time of the application, have a statutory right to ask their employers to change their contractual terms and conditions of employment to allow them to work flexibly. Employees can only make one statutory request in any 12-month period. A flexible working request must adhere to certain standards, namely it must: • be in writing; • state that the application is being made

under the statutory right to request a flexible working pattern;

and they must ensure that the employee is given the right to be accompanied to the meeting by a work colleague. Within 14 days of the meeting, the employer must write to the employee confirming the outcome of their request and the reasoning behind that decision and advising them of their right to appeal the decision. If the request is refused the employer must outline a clear business ground for refusing the application and further explain why that ground applies to the circumstances in question.

• explain what effect, if any, the employee thinks the proposed change would have on the employer and how, in their opinion, any such effect might be dealt with; • specify the flexible working pattern applied for; • state the date on which it is proposed the change should become effective; • state whether a previous application has been made to the employer and, if so, when it was made; and • be dated. Within 28 days of receiving a request, an employer must arrange a meeting with the employee to discuss whether the request can be accommodated within the business needs

PROPERTY SALES AND PURCHASES ARE ON THE RISE

Emma Matthews LL.B, Solicitor emmamatthews@solicitorsni.net As a Conveyancing Solicitor, I have noticed a continued increase in sales and purchases over the last couple of months after the downturn during lockdown. Lenders appear to no longer be demanding larger deposits from buyers and are processing mortgage offers at a faster rate. Samuel Dickey, RICS Northern Ireland residential property spokesman, has even been quoted in an article as saying “Encouragingly more properties have also been listed for sale, yet we are still experiencing the long-standing problem of not having enough supply to meet the demand.” Despite concerns by many individuals, average house prices have increased by approximately 3% with the average price being £141,000.00 in Northern Ireland. The stamp duty relief to March 2021 is a welcome relief to many individuals particularly those that are not first time buyers or may already own a residential property. Please contact Emma on 028 4175 3121 or emmamatthews@ solicitorsni.net and she will be happy to provide a quotation for any property matter and/or discuss the process involved.

Flexible working requests can be a tricky to navigate if employees and employers are not aware of their rights and responsibilities towards one another and both parties should proceed with caution in those circumstances. For further information or assistance with flexible working requests, please contact a member of our employment team.

NEW COVID RESTRICTIONS

Rachel Rice LL.B., Solicitor rrice@solicitorsni.net As you are probably aware the Assembly has put in place new regulations in relation to Coronavirus. There are localised ‘lockdowns’ in certain areas. However there seems to be some discrepancies as to what the new regulations mean and how they apply. The regulations are expanded upon slightly on the NI Direct website . The new regulations include: 1. No mixing of households in private dwellings, with exemptions for: •

bubbling with one other household

caring responsibilities including childcare

essential maintenance

supported living arrangements

visits required for legal or medical purposes

marriage or civil partnership ceremony in a private dwelling where one partner is terminally ill

2. No more than six people to gather in a private garden from no more than two households It is important to note that the above are regulations and therefore can be enforced and everything else including travel, work and socialising outside of the home is only guidance and not enforceable. With the situation changing on almost a daily basis it is important that we are given clear advice by the government moving forward.

FOYLESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE

CELEBRATES ITS 25TH BIRTHDAY Cult TV show ‘Derry Girls’ has brought living in the city in the 1990s to a global audience but there’s no doubt that the most exciting thing about the decade was the opening of the North West’s landmark retail destination - Foyleside Shopping Centre - in 1995. US President Bill Clinton even came to town in that most auspicious year for the historic city on the banks of the Foyle known worldwide for its LegenDerry welcome and flair for fashion! Foyleside forged the way for retail therapy 25 years ago by attracting some of the biggest and best high street names with main anchor tenants (such as M&S and Dunnes Stores, followed by Debenhams to name a few) offering an exciting new range of products and services. The choices were endless and they have expanded through the years. A weekend wasn’t complete without a wander around the stores on all four levels to check out the styles for every season and that’s still very much in vogue with fashion bloggers aka influencers now also leading the charge! For Foyleside’s Assistant Manager, Siobhan McDonald, it’s all the traditional fun-filled seasonal activities hosted by the Centre that stand out when she rolls back the years since she joined the staff in 1996. “What I love most about Foyleside are the colourful events we hold throughout the year that bring the Centre to life and the magical interaction they create with our staff and customers, especially the children at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.” Popular security staff member, Adrian ‘OB’ O’Brien, is another friendly, familiar face on the mall from 25 years ago and his job is clearly still a labour of love! “I have always loved my job at Foyleside, we’re like one big happy family here, staff and customers alike.” Fast forward 25 years and Foyleside is still the premier shopping location in the North West. Overseeing 52 | Local Women Magazine

ƒ Some of the Foyleside staff celebrate the centre’s 25th birthday.

its milestone 25th birthday is Centre manager Fergal Rafferty, who said: “It is such an achievement for Foyleside to be still as popular and relevant as it was when it first opened on September 25th, 1995. That is a testament to the dedicated management team and staff working within the Centre itself as well as all the Irish, UK and international retail chains who have identified this city as a great destination to do business. “Our longevity and success is reflected in our ongoing ability to embrace the diversifications in shopping trends, for example, by complementing our modern bricks and mortar retail experience to also offer online shopping with a click and collect service available for customers in a number of our stores.” Reflecting on some of his ƒ Centre manager Fergal Rafferty

proudest standout moments for Foyleside to date, Fergal said: “We have always provided a full programme of entertainment for shoppers through our ongoing engagement with local schools and community groups throughout the North West, featuring both homegrown talent and visiting artists coinciding with all the big international annual festivals and events the city is famous for throughout the world. “We are not just a shopping centre, we believe in being at the centre of our diverse local communities and that also includes giving back to the community by supporting local charities. Foyleside Shopping Centre has helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds over the years for charities such as Foyle Hospice and others particularly close to the hearts of people throughout the North West and further afield. We are delighted to reach this successful milestone and look forward to what the future holds for the Centre over the next 25 years and beyond.” For a list of stores and opening times or to purchase a Foyleside Gift Card visit Foyleside. co.uk or Facebook @FoylesideSC

ZARA’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Using the skills she learned from her two grandmothers, 11 year-old Zara Burney Keatings from Moira has set up a lockdown baking business.

A

By Maureen Coleman

budding young baker from Co Down is making plenty of ‘dough’ after watching sales of her signature wheaten bread rise in recent months. Eleven-year-old Zara Burney Keatings, from Moira, set up her business Use Your Loaf towards the end of lockown and has built up a solid customer base over the last few months. To begin with, Zara, a first-year pupil at Lurgan Junior High School, baked the bread for families and friends, but thanks to word of mouth, orders started to flood in. She now has repeat customers, including a group of builders on a local construction site and a woman from Aughnacloy, who travels up to Moira to buy batches for her mum. Twice a week, she gets up early before school, to bake the bread and prepare orders for delivery before heading off to class. Zara and her younger sister Savannah picked up baking tips from watching both their grand mums in the kitchen. When Zara asked her parents for a new mobile phone and was told she could have one if she came up with a plan to pay for it, she decided to put her bakery skills to good use. Now the phone plays a key role in her business, as she regularly takes orders from 54 | Local Women Magazine

her flourishing customer base. Zara says: “My papa hadn’t been well last year and I wanted to make him something nice so I baked him a few wheaten loaves. “It turned out really well so when mum said I could get a new phone for going to school, if I could pay for it, I thought it would be a good idea to bake more bread and sell it. “Both my nannies Doreen Burney and Joan Keatings are great bakers so maybe it runs in the family, and my mum certainly has a lot of energy and drive, so I think that is where I get that from. I used to help my nannies bake and make nice desserts, so I knew what to do and of course, mum kept an eye on me. “At first I sold the wheaten bread to family and friends but then word got around and people started ordering it. I now have regular customers who phone me up with repeat orders. I never expected it to take off the way it has.” Using a ‘secret’ recipe featuring locally sourced buttermilk and flour, Zara, whose mum Joan is chief executive of the charity Cinemagic, has baked hundreds of wheaten loaves over the last two to three months and the orders are still coming in. On the days she bakes, she rises at 7.30am, lays out her ingredients, washes her hands and starts baking in the family kitchen. When the loaves are ready, she covers them up and leaves them out to cool, before heading off to school. The bread is later packaged up for delivery. “Growing up, our house has always been super busy with family and people calling and my mum organising lots of events and films, so I am used to being around a lot of organising, planning and helping in the kitchen,” Zara says. “Each day our house runs like a schedule, as there’s always so much going on. I knew I needed to be up early every morning to start on the loaves; to get them all baked before able to earn money to pay for it,” she says. heading out to athletics in school. Then when money to pay for the new mobile phone. BACK TO BASICS Local Women’s Hairdressing Guru Carol Rooney from Carol & Catty takes us back to the basics of haircare.

Tackling your hair goals can be very daunting, so this month I want to strip it all back to basics and start from the beginning for you. I want to teach you some little hints and tips for taking care of your hair at home. Before considering any styling products, styling tools, or finishing products, start from the beginning. Washing your hair at home can determine the result of your finished style and it is so important you are using the correct products to master your style and complement your hair type. Regardless of texture, colour, or style it is possible to make your hair look like it has been through the hands of a professional every week. FIRSTLY - Rethink how you wash your hair. Over washing your hair can be damaging for your hair especially if it’s bleached, coloured, chemically treated or naturally very dry and porous. If you choose to wash your hair every day, you are washing away the natural oils and proteins that are required to maintain healthy hair and a healthy scalp. I advise you to limit washing your hair to a maximum of three times a week if you can.

WHEN WASHING YOUR HAIR

• use lukewarm water, make sure hair is completely drenched as this open the hair cuticle and allows the shampoo to activate. • Use a gentle pressure to massage the scalp and roots of the hairs to break up residue. Shampoo is for the scalp and roots to remove residue. Always repeat this process twice to ensure healthy clean hair. • Choose a shampoo and conditioning product that is suited to your individual hair type. • Leave conditioning product on mid lengths and ends for 5 mins if possible and if necessary. Conditioner is not made for the roots so avoid applying to the top section of your hair. Conditioner is vital whether it be a cream consistency or a spray on as conditioner closes the hair cuticles and prevents unnecessary damage when styling. • Rinse thoroughly well, at least 3 minutes of rinsing with clean running water. • Never rub your hair with a towel, always squeeze the excess water with your towel. Hair is extremely fragile when wet, if you towel dry roughly you are breaking the hair cuticle and creating tangled unruly hair. So always squeeze the water out! • When you hair is wet always remember this is the stage it’s at its most vulnerable, when combing your hair it is extremely important to remember to start combing from the bottom and slowly work your way up to the mid lengths and finally finish combing at the root, this allows you to tackle the tangled hair safely. Never start combing your hair at the root. SECONDLY - Choose the correct shampoo and conditioning products for your hair. Ask your hair professional and listen to their advice, try to purchase your hair products within your hair salon as

this guarantees your hair is getting the exact ingredients it needs.

BEST SHAMPOO FOR DRY/COURSE HAIR Moisture is vital to strengthen brittle hair. Professional products tend to get inside the hair cuticle and leave lasting results, whilst non-professional products tend to just coat the hair and not penetrate the hair cuticle at all. I recommend Subtil Ultimate Repair Shampoo. This will help cure and regenerate the hair fibres. Through continuous use, the hair strengthens, and breakages are reduced.

BEST SHAMPOO FOR FINE HAIR The finer the hair, the faster the hair absorbs oil from the scalp, and it can become greasy. If you have fine hair choose a gentle cleansing shampoo or volumising shampoo, these shampoos will help prevent oils devolving so quickly and create a barrier between the scalp and hair. I recommend Subtil Very Light Voloumising Shampoo. This shampoo will gently remove residue from the hair and energise the hair fibre for a volumizing, boosting effect each time you wash your hair.

DRY SHAMPOO Remember also dry shampoo is your friend. Using dry shampoo in your home care routine is a great quick fix and time saver. I believe you can get an extra two days from using this product. Just ensure you are using it correctly, separate the roots and spray about 10cm from the hair, if the powder slightly overloads don’t panic, just simply blast the hairdryer onto your roots and this will remove any unwanted product. I recommend Subtil Dry shampoo as it has an instant effect on the hair, the powder substance does not wet the hair and it creates a beautiful fresh smell and look to the hair.

If you have any questions or queries, you can write to me through social media and I’ll happily answer your questions and queries.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND LIGHT

Even during these difficult times, Catriona Channing and her team at Blades & Beauty in Antrim remain positive and creative with new ideas and styles. Hello Local Women readers,

Model: Yasmin Doyle

Welcome to our October column. This is my favourite month and I love the season of autumn.

Image: Kevin Cobb Styled: Dame Bro

Last month we were able to facilitate our first lockdown wedding for the lovely Lyn and her bridal party. The stunning rustic ceremony was held in our local Antrim Castle Gardens and she looked beautiful.Isn’t she gorgeous in her picture by Dave Pettard? In terms of hair trends, lockdown has a new look - the perm is the new comeback kid and we have been getting lots of enquiries. We are taking appointments for these and they will be available from Sunday until Tuesday in the salon only. We have a different curl type to suit all tastes. I want to thank the amazing Simon Kindleysides at United World Radio for choosing me as a guest speaker in his programme which in turn extended to his podcast as well. As a team we secured another 15 will be gracing the glossy editorial back months’ collaboration only this time we pages with this incredible magazine with whom we have a great rapport, working relationship and mutual support and respect for each other.

Dressing Up for Autumn

T

he majority of us have spent a significant part of 2020 in loungewear, with elasticated waistbands and comfortable trainers. But now, with more and more people returning to the office and getting back to normal life, it’s time to put proper outfits together again. Can we remember how to do it? Will we have to learn to walk in heels again? Do we need to buy an entire new wardrobe?

I’m not sure about the first two questions, but the answer to the last one is no! At Kular Fashion, we’re firm believers in ‘Buy Now, Wear Forever’. Just because it’s a new season, doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on an entirely new wardrobe. By introducing a few key investment pieces, you’ll be able to create lots of different outfits with them, year on year.

In this month’s column, we’re going to introduce you to a few of our favourite key pieces that everyone should have in their Autumn wardrobe. The great thing about these pieces is that they will last a lifetime if looked after properly. So when next Autumn comes back around, you’ll already have your favourite pieces ready and waiting.

The Jacket While it might not be time for a heavy Winter coat just yet, it is layering season. A jacket is the perfect addition right now as it can be paired with a lighter item underneath like a long-sleeve t-shirt, or layered over knitwear as we reach the colder temperatures in November.

The Boots A good pair of comfortable boots are essential for Autumn and will carry you right through the winter. Whether you prefer a small chunky heel or completely flat, there is something for everyone at Kular Fashion. We love the simple design of these new Rieker boots - they would look great with skinny jeans as well as dressed up with tights and a dress for a dinner date. Alternatively, we have a huge selection of Dr Martens in store if you prefer something cool and comfortable.

The Knitwear September is a little too early for knitwear as the temperatures are still high, the weather is always nice when the kids go back to school isn’t it? Well now it’s officially Autumn and we can break out the knitwear. We have lots in store from GANT and Polo Ralph Lauren and it will keep you cosy right through Winter.

The Jeans We’re a city of denim lovers and we live in our jeans all year round. A good quality pair of jeans like these ones from GANT will see you through all the seasons and will work as the perfect outfit staple in Autumn. Whether you need to be dressed up or dressed down, these super soft skinny jeans will always have your back.

LipoContrast is the newest technology in fat freezing and body contouring treatments.

BEFORE

Advanced CryoThermal Technology

Where can LipoContrast treat and how long does it take?

33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes. LipoContrast is indicated for local fat reduction (including fibrous fat) on different zones (waist, flanks, abdomen, love handles, lower back, upper back, hips, thighs, knees, gynecomasty, double chin and arms) through multisized applicators.

The Advantages of LipoContrast The effect produced is almost immediate. After treatment with the LipoContrast thermal shock, some fat cells are immediately disabled and will be eliminated within a few days. Other cells enter in severe apoptosis phase and will be progressively eliminated within a few weeks. Depending on the adipose tissue thickness and the desired result, 1 to 3 sessions can be treated on an area over 12 weeks, with an approximate interval of 4 weeks between each one – much shorter than cryo-lipo alternatives, giving quicker results. The duration of each session is 60 minutes. •

3 times faster and superior fat reduction compared with normal fat freezing and body contouring procedures.

Increased effectiveness on fibrous fat (hard fat).

Avoids traumatic experiences of invasive methods such as liposuction.

WE’VE GOT IT ALL RIGHT HERE! With holidays on hold, Local Women’s food and drink columnist Paula Gracey makes the most of what we have locally with a trip to Dublin.

I

love Autumn… the change of seasons and the leaves starting to fall, not to mention the promise of Strictly coming back! That is the only good thing I have heard this year – just get me to Christmas and then 2020 can clear off. Frustratingly, we didn't get over to Spain this year but decided on a staycation for a few days and headed to Dublin to try out the newly arrived Hard Rock Hotel, on the edge of the usually jiving Temple Bar. Such a cool place to stay! Music lovers will be in absolute heaven. From the minute you walk into the lobby, hear the music and see all the amazing artwork you know are somewhere special. I was immediately distracted by the display cabinets, one of which had my hero David Bowie's orange boiler suit from the Blue Jean video – and had to get my pic taken beside it, of course! Next to it was Janis Joplin's guitar case – the entire hotel is full of fascinating memorabilia. The staff are all so friendly and everything is so well organised to adhere to all the new Covid-safe regulations which in no way took anything away from our experience at the Hard Rock. Our room was decorated in a cool, modern way with lots of grey, teal and splashes of red and beautiful white bedlinen, complete with a tiny guitar embroidered on the pillowcases! We had a lovely corner room and spent the early evenings sitting looking out at Dublin city centre while enjoying a drink and listening to the superb array of music available through the enormous TV. The best bit was the electric Fender guitar and amp left in our room. You can actually go onto an instruction channel and learn how to play! We were completely rubbish but had a ball taking photos and pretending to be rockstars! But it was really heavy, the guitar not the rock music. I now have a greater respect for all those guitar heroes who wield them around on stage. I am clearly not strong but very bendy and I take my yoga mat absolutely everywhere with me. I am a total yoga nut and practice every morning - so how excited was I to find a specialist Manduka

74 | Local Women Magazine

yoga mat in our room, as standard? They even have a yoga channel to watch called ‘Rock Om’ with three levels yoga classes lasting 30 mins each – I was in my absolute element! We dined in the hotel's South American themed restaurant Zampas on the first night and oh my goodness what amazing flavours. The homemade breads, seafood starters and hubby's beef main were melt in the mouth while I opted for a delicious salad with grains and couscous to which you could add chicken or Dublin Bay prawns – so good. We were also very impressed by the breakfast next morning which is served in Zampas – no buffet due to Covid but the table service was excellent and the choice of breakfast was really good. I had yummy porridge with fruit and maple syrup while hubby ordered up a delicious looking omelette but before that we were brought complementary fruit and yoghurt with granola and tiny little milk bottles containing a fruity yoghurt drink and some dinky pastries, all served on a carved wooden board – a lovely touch. We were well set up for the day and a walk around the massive Phoenix Park before a tour of the Guinness Storehouse in the afternoon. Due to the fact that they can't have huge crowds at the minute, we were able to really see around it quite relaxed and unhurried. Much of the experience is inter active with lots of videos – my fave was the coopers making a barrel – what a skill. Up and up each of the 12 floors we went, learning all about how Guinness is made, about flounder Arthur Guinness and his family, and all about the early advertising, a lot of which I had forgotten about, it was all so interesting. The experience ends on the top floor at the Gravity Bar where you can sit and look out over Dunlin city while enjoying a pint of the black stuff – it was an afternoon well spent. We were recommended another restaurant for our second night in Dublin called Mister S on Camden Street – such a good call as it was superb. I enjoyed one of the best monkfish dishes I have ever been served and the sharing dessert of a melting chocolate pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream on top served in the little pan was absolutely scrummy!

FLAVOURS OF THE MONTH Since our afternoon in the Guinness Storehouse on our trip to Dublin, good old Guinness has to be a flavour of the month. I have always enjoyed Guinness and it takes me back to my student days (when it was followed by a Drambuie chaser at the time) and, of course, as your granny used to tell you – "it puts hairs on your chest"… should you require any. I just enjoy the dark nectar with its malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness with hints of coffee and chocolate. It is wonderfully smooth, creamy and well balanced stout, not forgetting the fabulous Guinness moustache you get when you take that first long chug of it. Apparently, it contains lots of soluble fibre as well as pre-biotics which boost good gut bacteria – so maybe they were right and Guinness really is good for you! If you are on the lookout for Organic wines try Purato Grillo Spumante Brut (£11.99 from Ocado). This is a super Sicilian sparkler made from 100% Grillo grapes which are hand-picked at the end of August. It is a pale straw colour with glints of gold and has very classy fine bubbles. It has a lovely gentle floral aroma with a soft, fruity palate, perfect as an aperitif and with seafood and light starters. This wine is certified organic and Vegan friendly. The label, bottle and closure are also Eco-Friendly so don't feel at all guilty about indulging in this fruity fizz! Last but never least, Gin – this month I tried Whitley Neill Pink Grapefruit Gin, from Asda, which is made from Iberian Pink Grapefruit so is infused with the fragrant aromas of Spain. It has a delicate sweetness with zingy citrusy notes and is as close as I could get to my beloved second home this year thanks to the stupid quarantine. Salud!

‘READY FOR AUTUMN BUT CLINGING ONTO SUMMER’

As the weather turns colder, Local Women columnist Hollie Campbell is loving the new autumn styles in the shops now. The evenings are getting shorter and darker and the mornings slightly colder. I’m excited about ‘fall season.’ I love the winter style. It’s definitely my favourite style.I love all the coats and boots. But I’m also clinging into some summer. I had my first and last wedding of 2020 last week and I went for a nice bright colour to finish off my summer vibe. I hired this dress from Willow Designer Dress Hire in Newry. I’m over spending big money on dresses for weddings that I only ever wear once. I think hiring them is the way forward and a great idea. I got some new boots for winter in River Island lately. I went for comfort this year ladies as I am just not great with the high heels any more (especially if there is any distance to walk!) I’m loving the nude colours in Mango, Zara and River Island at the minute. There are some gorgeous knit jumpers and coats. I’m still obsessed with Freddie’s and leather is always my biggest hit in winter. I can dress them up with heels and a nice top or down with jumpers and flat boots. I have a discount code for Freddie’s you can all use.

It is hc20 and I have lots of them up on my Instagram highlights if you would like to see more. Both boots I got recently in River Island and I’m getting great wear out of them. Looking forward to sharing more autumn/winter fashion with you all in the coming months. Any questions feel free to message me on my Instagram. Lots of love

“I’M A STEP CLOSER TO MY DREAM JOB”

Ballymena Health and Social Care student Grace Thompson on her stepping stone to success and her dream career as a nurse.

S

tudying Health and Social Care at Northern Regional College has opened the door to academic success and set a Ballymena student on the road to fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse. Grace Thompson has just completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College in Ballymena with a triple Distinction which is the equivalent standard of three A*s at A-level. She secured offers from all five universities she applied to and has accepted a place at Queen’s University Belfast to start an Adult Nursing degree in February 2021. Having achieved nine GCSEs at school, Grace progressed to do AS-levels in Biology, Economics, Politics and English Literature, but admitted that because she was unsure about her future plans at that stage, she did not enjoy them. “Halfway through my lower sixth, I decided to apply to Northern Regional College to do the Health and Social Care Diploma as this was a subject I was interested in and wanted to learn more about. ƒ Grace Thompson

“It was the best decision I ever made and I haven’t looked back since the first day I walked through the doors. I’m able to study nursing at university and move a step closer to achieving my dream career,” Grace explained. She added that her time at the College helped her enjoy learning once again and is already considering going on to study a Master’s when she finishes her undergraduate degree. Grace attributed her positive experience at the college to a number of factors: “I made life-long friends and I loved that my lecturers had previously worked in different health and social care settings so they could link the theory we were being taught in class with examples from their own career experiences. “Each lecturer truly wanted us to do well and gave us so much support. They knew how fastpaced and heavy the workload is and supported us throughout the twoyear course.” Grace said the work placements completed as an integral part of the course were also very beneficial. “We were able to experience what it would be like to work in different health and social care settings. This gave us a great insight and a better understanding of the sector, which in turn allowed us to determine which area we wanted to pursue and study at a higher level. I completed placements in

addiction centres, nursing homes, Belfast City Hospital theatres, the cancer centre and spent time with radiologists in a radiography suite. By doing this, I was able to see that I really wanted to become a nurse,” she said. As well as helping her decide on her future career path, Grace believed the placements really boosted her confidence and improved her communication skills. “I was passionate about the course, so I enjoyed going and looking for more information to add to my coursework and then being able to discuss what I’d found with my lecturers. There is such a positive and supportive environment within the Health and Social Care department and the lecturers are genuinely proud of every student they teach,” she explained. While she was at Northern Regional College, Grace suffered bereavements and health problems but she said her lecturers were always there for her, providing support and encouragement and, when the College closed and class contact became impossible because of the COVID-19 lockdown, lecturers adapted seamlessly to online learning and maintained constant contact with students. Nadia Ghalami, course co-ordinator of the Level 3 Health & Social Care Course at Ballymena, said Grace’s positive attitude and high level of motivation had contributed to her success. “Grace is a very caring, articulate and dedicated individual. Her advanced caring skills, empathy for the opinions and feelings of others and passion for life make her an ideal fit for nursing.” Nadia added: “I watched Grace grow in confidence and self-reliance during her two years at the College and I’m confident that she will continue to display the same diligence and commitment in her chosen career. I wish her very success in her future endeavours.”

Hey guys

MASTERPLAN FAKEAWAY ZINGER BURGER SERVES: 4 INGREDIENS • 4 Chicken Breasts • 1 Egg • 30g Chilli Tortilla Chips • 1 tbsp Cornflour • 1 tsp Chilli Powder • 1 tsp Garlic Salt • 1 tsp Smoked Paprika • 1 tsp Onion Granules

METHOD ● Preheat the oven to 180C and line a baking tray with grease-proof paper. ● Place the tortilla chips & spices into a food bag and smash until it nearly resembles fine crumbs, but some larger pieces remain. Whisk 1 egg in a bowl. Lightly coat chicken breasts in cornflour and dip in whisked egg mixture. ● Thoroughly roll and coat each chicken breast in spicy Dorito mixture and place on a baking tray. Cook for 20-25 minutes in the oven until completely cooked through and golden. Serve with a burger bun and a variety of salads or air fried homemade chips and even a drizzle of your favourite curry sauce!! ● Yes remember nothing is forbidden particularly when you focus on amazing meals first and adding colour and nutrition to every meal! As I say eat better not less!

Thanks you so much for all the messages on my introduction last month and be sure to tag me on Instagram @mydalymasterplan if you are loving my column as I will be giving away a free one to one session for the best tag every month! At the minute I am receiving so many messages about how to stay motivated with so much uncertainty. I guess for me one thing is for certain and that is we have to eat at least three times a day and each time we have a choice to make….do we eat foods that nourish and fuel our bodies or do we make choices that ultimately lead us to poorer health? What we put on our fork each day is I believe one of the most important decisions we make yet one that we often give the least thought to. I also feel that we have become surrounded by food 24x7 and no longer eat to live but live to eat – food has a true function in our bodies and really should be providing us with all the nutrients and vitamins we need to flourish however the research tells us that we are consuming similar calories than in previous years however less and less nutrients. So where do you start?! One of the biggest reasons I hear for unhealthy food choices is lack of time – however I honestly believe that lockdown proved that time is not the true problem….how many tasks did you think you would do if you had all the time in the world and no commuting, no nights out, no kids activities? Exactly whether it is reading more books, learning a new skill, eating better or becoming more active we only do something when it becomes a priority. For me living forever or certainly as long as possible in good health is one of my top priorities so no matter how busy life gets 80-90% of the time I still enjoy amazing food! – How I hear you shout?! Simply by planning ahead twice a week – I love on a Sunday night to plan ahead for the next few days and then on a Wed night I will plan Thurs – Sunday and I shop twice a week to get exactly what I need – now like every household plans may change, dinner may be earlier or later than planned but once I have an idea of things I can have and food in the fridge then it becomes easy and honestly the more you do it the easier it becomes. We have so many recipe ideas to suit every palette in our app and now I could write a plan for a full week in just minutes. And it also means that not only are the meals nutritious but they are super delicious like the zinger burger recipe I have shared here and you can be eating like a lord, feeling better and loving life all at the same time!! Hugs Always

New Columnist Orla from Luxury Le Jardin Spa Wow! what a roller coaster we have been on! Let me take 10 minutes in the infrared sauna to reflect upon the opening of Le Jardin and the unimaginable pandemic of COVID-19. I recall being at our corporate launch event in February 2020 and, as we showed our guests around our shiny new spa and demonstrated different unique spa elements, I casually explained how the ozone machine we had (which we intended to use for facials) would actually be "really beneficial in China at the moment as they have a virus which is spreading rapidly there!" Now, fast forward a few months and we are currently using said machine to ensure or spa is one of the safest places to relax! It’s been a life altering time for all, but human spirit has endured and there have been many positives that have come from this surreal situation. Now more than ever, people are looking inward and striving to maintain a balance and equilibrium to make the most of our time, utilizing whatever natural resources they can to lift mood and improve upon their health. We have been focusing hard to ensure that during the period while the spa remained shut we were in a crystalis state, learning new skills such as Ghu Sha therapy, micro needling, and advanced aesthetic techniques which we are excited to reveal in the coming months. We launched our online shop alongside our retail Le Jardin Skincare range so you can carry on your regimes at home. We also had our little herbalist hat on as embarked on developing and refining a new anti-aging mushroom facial serum. Our product partners Natura Bisse have been immensely supportive, creating online training for staff and also generously offering a care workers initiative which we are launching shortly. To say we are delighted to be reopening is an understatement. We love Le Jardin and the therapy we provide, and more than ever, we thank our guests for choosing us and letting us be a part of your unique wellness journey. To celebrate my new addition to Local Women Magazine we are offering all Local Women readers who quote LWLJ upon booking an Autumn Spa Package a decadent spiced apple Gin Cocktail. Wishing you health and happiness, Orla

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE AT HALLOWEEN

Are you ready to embrace Autumn? The smell of rain, the crunch of fallen leaves, cosy foods and hot drinks, fireworks, and Halloween celebrations! As the cooler weather settles, we want to make sure you have all the information and knowledge on how best to care for your dog. As the days get colder and we start wearing more layers it is important to remember to keep regular appointments with your groomer over the colder months. Don’t let your dog’s coat get too long as it will take longer to dry after getting wet when out walking. Long coats that are constantly dirty and wet will bunch and matt, and this can leave your groomer with no option but to clip the dog shorter than they would like for winter. It is likely that with the wetter weather dogs will get grubbier, and wool coats will attract and hold more dirt than a silky coat. For the mucky pups who need bathed regularly at home check out Groom Professional Dirty Dog and Wahl Dirty Beastie. Both these products will cleanse dirty, thick or matted coats and deodorise even the smelliest pups. It is also important to dry your dog thoroughly after walks, and regular brushing will help remove any matts, tangles and dirt.

Don’t leave your pet outside

Try to walk your dog before fireworks start

Create a safe, quiet space for them inside

Consider using some natural calming supplements like Serene-Um by Vet IQ or Lintbells Yucalm Chewies. Neither of these supplements will cause sedation. Stranger Things – Not only are Halloween costumes unusual to your dog but the constant unexpected visitors and weird noises may also upset them and make them anxious. these will seem unusual and potentially worrying for your dog, especially if your dog is normally anxious. Trick or Treat sweets are not for dogs – While we enjoy mini chocolate bar and bags of Haribo, it is important to remember that these treats are not for dogs!

Keep your dog away from the door. On Halloween night with Trick or Treat visitors this may be opened and shut a lot.

·Don’t dress your pet up unless you are sure they’ll like it. Costumes should fit and not restrict movements, sight, hearing, or ability to breathe, as these will cause your pet distress.

You should get enough sleep, not smoke and consider relaxation strategies such as meditation or yoga.

Some over the counter medications (e.g. ibuprofen and aspirin) are effective at reducing physical symptoms including cramps, breast tenderness and headaches. Your doctor may consider prescribing hormonal contraceptive pills, antidepressant medication, water tablets (diuretics) or anxiety medications to improve symptoms. GET CONNECTED TO

With continuing restrictions on movement, never has the need for online pharmacy services been greater. Local Women meets pharmacist Aaron Carlyle who, along with his business partner Féilim Henry, has established Chemist Connect to bring products and medications straight to your door. Chemist Connect is a leading online pharmacy and health and beauty retailer.

ƒ Féilim Henry and Aaron Carlyle

Led by a team of expert award-winning pharmacists, when you shop with Chemist Connect, you are connected to their expertise. They combine expert knowledge with amazing products, services and online sales, helping you to look and feel your best. Just as you would expect from a High Street pharmacy, they offer a range of services from prescription dispensing and delivery, to health products and advice. So, connect to Chemist Connect for a healthier, happier you. No nonsense, no fuss, no problems. Just convenience, value, and trust.

What is Chemist Connect? In 2014 Féilim Henry and I set out to create an online pharmacy brand. As pharmacists we wanted to create a convenient online experience that replicated the great service and trust that is achieved in bricks and mortar pharmacies. Chemist Connect emerged from this as Northern Ireland’s first online pharmacy. We have gone on to service customers across the world, shipping to over 100 countries last year, everywhere from Belfast to Brazil, and Donegal to Doha. Chemist Connect is a look into the future of pharmacy - It should be affordable, available and accessible, be that in-store, online or on your mobile.

LEATHER IS BACK ON TREND FOR AUTUMN WINTER 2020 Hello to all my readers, It is hard to believe that we are into the month of October already, the clocks go back this month and with it comes an extra hour in bed, now that is something to really look forward to if you are an early riser like myself. Leather, and especially faux leather pieces, have gained huge approval for this season. Instead of being limited to outerwear, brands are updating coordinated looks in this material, creating blazers and pantsuits or shirts and midi pencil skirts in various shades of leather. Black, brown, white and lavender are the primary colours that I have observed on all the catwalk shows. So, this month I have decided to write my fashion blog on the hell for leather look which is trending this season and yes of course I have stocked an array of pieces here in Gasp for the Autumn Winter season. So, whether you are going for the real deal or faking it, here are a few ways to style the leather trend. I find the high-waisted leather joggers we just cannot keep in stock , they are so easily worn with over layering tops , ankle boots , high top boots and baggy shirts , and yet you still look so versatile trendy and chic without any effort . So if you are bored of wearing jeans for the last couple of months I would 116 | Local Women Magazine

consider having a pair of these leather joggers in your wardrobe they can always be teamed up with a fine knit or chunky jumper and trainers too. So, what else is trending in the leather look? Another wardrobe piece that you

will get plenty of wear out of is a PU trench coat. This faux leather outerwear is a classic and understated option for the wetter months but remains on-trend this season. Style it with a pair of slimline trousers or a mini skirt. You can even tie the waist in and create a dress. The perfect shades to wear in this coat would include brown, black, grey, or blue. From pencil to mini, pleated to straight, colourful to classic black, there are plenty of styles of leather skirt available this season but when it comes to autumn dressing this classic piece is one of my favourites it can be worn everywhere from work or out to dinner, throughout those casual weekend trips and even into your dressier occasions. Yes I am talking about the one and only perfect Autumn Winter investment the leather Pu pleated skirt, This classic separate I feel should be at the top of your wish list, I absolutely love this capsule piece which never goes out of style it adds an essential look to your wardrobe without having to shop for new clothing at every turn. This skirt has so much versatility and here in Gasp we tend to match them with funky ankle boots, knee high boots or even trainers depending on the weather and occasion.

piece that can be worn over jeans, paired with tights or left unbuttoned layered over a roll neck as a long-line shirt. DEALING WITH HAIR LOSS Using her own experiences of hair loss, Salon Manager at Mm MamaMia Emma McKenna, discusses the best products to use for optimum scalp health and hair volume.

T

he season of autumn is finally upon us, and in this month’s column I would like to talk about a sensitive issue that affects both women and men at some stage of their lives - hair loss.

I personally have endured this for the last three years after having two babies one after another. I have tried almost every vitamin hair loss shampoo and treatment out there, and I’ve studied hair loss courses with the brands I’ve worked with over the years. First and foremost, I am not a doctor, so I’m not speaking from a medical perspective. But, there are products

that clients can use to boost volume and density of the hair. Alfaparf volumising range boosts volume, adds thickness and hydrates thin and fine hair. This range contains volume boost complex that boosts volume and adds density to the entire hair fibre. There are also products on the market today that contain actual hair fibres and can be used to cover finer areas where the scalp is more noticeable such as 3D hair powders, which come in a range of shades to match up to clients hair colour. Products today are so much more prescriptive than ever before. So, if something is not working for you, then it’s not the right product for your hair. Finally, ladies (and gents) I firmly believe that after using the right products for your own individual hair problems, after a three-month period, you should be seeing results.
