MEET THE NHS HEROES SAVING LIVES DURING THE PANDEMIC.

It’s great to see everyone getting so excited - imagine a year ago if you thought you’d actually be excited about your job! The last few months have been a massive learning curve for all of us as we adjusted to the ‘new normal’ – don’t you just hate that word?! There are so many Corona-related words and phrases I would be quite happy never to hear again! Fingers crossed things get back to ‘proper normal’ very soon and we never have to hear the phrase ‘social distance’ again.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION IDEAS FROM STARLIGHT & STONE, PORTRUSH.

As we emerge from lockdown, I thought it was the right time to meet some of the local NHS frontline workers who have been looking after us so well during the pandemic. From nurses to domiciliary care workers, they have been working tirelessly throughout this chaotic time. Every NHS worker deserves our heartfelt praise and I know you’ll love reading about their time working on the frontline.

hen Geraldine Kerr’s tiny baby was stillborn 18 years ago, she had to bury her in a doll’s dress from a toy shop. “Billie was perfect in every way but weighed barely a pound so the wee doll’s outfit was the only thing small enough, but it’s played on my mind ever since,” says the Ballymoney woman who’s determined no mum should have to go through that same heartbreak. “I have two beautiful children now but every day’s a struggle, for when you lose a child noone can tell you how to deal with it. You have to find a place within yourself to learn to live with it.” And although it’s taken all that time, Geraldine (44) feels that finally she might be turning a corner with the mental health issues that have dogged her life since losing her baby. “Billie would have been 18 on May 31, and there isn’t a day I don’t think about her. I’ve been bothered with mental health issues since, but recently I’ve been starting to feel more positive,” says Geraldine who’s celebrating the first anniversary of Billie’s

MY LAWN LIFE…

JoinHer’s Lori Gatsi-Barnett introduces the brilliant Jean Michelo who finds her approach to tending her garden much like her journey through life. It is a grassed up area. A moss ridden, slow growing, pale yellowy green, dry, patchy, thatched, grassed up area, overrun by weeds, all desperately sucking nutrients from soil that could only be described as similar to the texture and porosity of a brick. It’s edged with flower beds where tired rose bushes languish, constricted shrubs cry and sections so treacherous, where lawn mowers fear to tread! Taking another bite from my sandwich and catching some falling content, I admit my thought is to completely dig it up - but that was the overwhelm, the despair talking, as remembered conversations journey through my mind. ‘leave the whole thing and just mow the grass regularly; what do you want a golf course? Hello to everyone with green fingers who holds that creative outlook that is beautifully expressed in your gardening “craftswomanship.” A conversation with Jean is one such like no other. From her interests and life’s journey there is no end to the amazing silent brilliance in her views and expressions to life. I’m sure we all often wonder if our individual excellence is simply just in our own eyes or are we mistaken hidden in plain sight waiting to be discovered? So, let’s get to this gardening you might find you will be very surprised how talented you actually are!

“As I work on my lawn I see my life experiences”

Puh! it’s far too small for lawn tennis! It’s the back, who’ll see it? “I will” slipped out, audibly

As I work on my lawn I see my life experiences: in the weeds of the past anchored in my present, the thatching in my thinking, the moss covered memories of beautiful things, the blocking of productive pathways by compacted unquestioned belief system Sitting in the ‘grassed up areas’, the issues and needs and narratives are seen up close and personal. Others had clearly Kill the weed! The root’s too But I can choose differently. I choose to accept it with deep to extract? - splice it and spray directly for its imperfections not as a ‘grassed up area’ but ‘a lawn’. effective eradication. It’s a time of strange occurrences and opportunities, of confrontations and conformity, of distractions and deletions…. no hiding; now seen, the truthful needs of this stifled lawn can only be consciously ignored.

My lawn! As such I attribute value and worth to it, As the unwanted elements die, they MUST be raked something precious to me. out. It’s amazing how stubborn, dead, decaying weeds But none of this happens overnight. Lawn and life in and moss are to remove and frighteningly how much of it there is! this article are interchangeable.

“I’m ‘shielding’ and almost literally watching the grass grow physically and mentally! After all, what’s a girl to do? There’s a limit to the variations of homemade ‘no-knead’ bread, non-meat meatballs and natural facial masks, one can make, bake, use and/or consume. (Brown sugar and tomato facial scrub is really good and tastes nice too.) With my ‘non-meat’, meat ball nestled between two hearty slices of wholesome omega 3 bread lined with tomato, in hand, I stand looking at the picture framed view from my study.

Yet even in all of the decay new growth is occurring all around. Meticulously rake, clean and clear your area. Aerate your soil, let it breath and drink deeply. restock your lawn with fresh seed, and enrich with topsoil and compost, overlaid in copious amounts. The rest is time water and patience Muddy hands , sweat across your brow , satisfied? As you soak in how much work you put into this garden… “your life” It’s beautiful exactly as it should be ! Unapologetically fabulous and such a testament to your creative genius, Well done!”

Brighter days are coming, so it’s the perfect time to introduce a little pink into our colour schemes, with accents of blush and splashes of fuschia. Hi everyone, It’s been another month in lockdown which is tough for us all – but on the upside at least we have plenty of time to have a look at our homes and contemplate how we would like to change them. There’s nothing quite like spending 24 hours a day in your house to make you decide that you need new colour palettes. This month to cheer us all up I am introducing pink into my schemes – it is such an uplifting colour and one I know lots of people adore. So many people ask me for pink in their colour schemes – it never seems to go out of fashion and retains its popularity.

been designed for my clients, they love pink and

But a note of caution, there is a fine line between stylish accents of rose, salmon and coral and a Barbie palace! Pink is such a nice colour to team up with grey and white. I love mixing different textures and fabrics in my design projects to create depth and tone. For the perfect backdrop, wallpapers by Designers Guild, Casamance and Tim Wiman are gorgeous. Paint colour is important, as there are 50 plus shades of grey to choose from - it’s important to get a grey that suits the pink you love and has the right tone. Colour consultations are so important at the initial stages and will save time and money. It’s good to invest and get it planned out and perfect for you as a base.

Looking to the future, my new studio in Lisburn is opening as soon as it’s safe to go back out and I can’t wait to get started on this new project. Currently I am working from home and can provide you with a full interior home consultation to give your home a new look when lockdown ends. Looking forward to welcoming you all back soon.

WELCOME BACK TO YOUNIQUE AESTHETIC CLINICS The award-winning clinics in Newry and Belfast are back – and here’s what to expect on your next visit with new protocols to ensure your safety.

Following Government guidelines, our Newry and Belfast clinics reopened on Monday, July 6. Along with many local businesses, The Younique Group has restructured their business to ensure appropriate safety measures are in place to prevent contamination and ensure our clients feel safe returning for their treatments. We will provide sanitising stations at entry and exit areas while ensuring social distancing is maintained before and after treatments. Our team will also be wearing full PPE to protect our clients at all costs and make them feel comfortable upon their return.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING THE CLINIC ● BEFORE YOU ENTER On arrival, a sanitising station will be provided along with masks and gloves which you will be required to wear. Once you enter the clinic, you will be greeted by the receptionist and your temperature will be taken. Covid19 antibody tests and Vitamin D tests will be available if needed. You will then be provided with a wellness check form and a pager which you can bring with you and fill in while waiting to be called. Four allocated parking spaces will be made available outside the clinic.

18 | Local Women Magazine

● WHEN YOU ARE CALLED IN The pager will inform you when your appointment is ready. Once this pager rings, you can re-enter the clinic and your therapist will guide you into the treatment room.

● DURING TREATMENT Our therapists will ensure to sanitise the room prior to your entry, and they will be wearing PPE for both the staff and patient’s protection.

● END OF TREATMENT Our therapist will walk you to the reception desk where all purchases will be handled behind a protective screen. Aftercare will be emailed and an online follow up will be organised online.

NEW PUPPY ADVICE Welcoming a puppy or new dog into your family is exciting but before rehoming a dog it’s important to consider your living space, your lifestyle and working hours and how your pet will fit with your family. All of this will help you choose the right breed and pet for you.

Once you have found the right dog, it’s time for home safety and arrival preparations. Here are some of our tips and essential purchases to make life easier for you, and to make sure your new arrival is happy in his new home.

VET AND INSURANCE New puppies should be vaccinated to help protect against highly infectious diseases - chat to your local vet about your options. It is also a good idea to speak to them about pet insurance to see which they recommend. Pet insurance could save you money in the long run, should your dog ever need treatment.

FEEDING Just like us your dog will need a carefully balanced diet, packed with high quality ingredients which SLEEPING maintain healthy skin and coat, keep eyes bright, Exercising your dog in the evening will tire and keep energy levels high. them out, so hopefully they’ll sleep, and When making your choice consider your dog’s you’ll have a peaceful night. Dogs can be age and breed, as well as their level of activity pretty resilient when it comes to where they and any health issues. Our team at Pet & Country sleep, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like are happy to advise on the best food for your to be comfy. We have a range of quality dog from top ranges such as Royal Canin, James beds from Joules, Barbour and Rogz. If you Wellbeing, Greenhill Farm and Nutram. rehome a puppy it’s worth considering a bed that is waterproof or at least washable! Invest in some ceramic or stainless-steel water and food bowls – these will be durable and also ACTIVITY & EXERCISE less easy to tip. Check out our range of Rogz Your dog will love to get outside. It’s a bowls in store. chance to socialise with others and explore as well as to get much needed exercise! Although you can’t take new puppies out for walks until they’ve had their injections, you can help them get used to wearing a collar and lead as they explore your house and garden – just make sure both are puppy-proof and secure! An adjustable collar is great for growing puppies, but small dogs may feel more comfortable in a harness as it protects their delicate necks. You can purchase an ID tag to identify your dog but by 8 weeks all dogs in Northern Ireland must be microchipped. Contact your local Dog’s Trust for details of their free microchipping events.

TOYS Toys are more than just playthings for your dog, they can help them develop new skills and improve their ability to learn. Toys also promote natural behaviours such as foraging and exploring. On top of this, toys but can also be part of their dental care. Like babies, puppies’ teeth and gums get sore during teething, so providing a toy which keeps their interest and give them something to bite is a great idea.

GROOMING It’s important to introduce your dog to grooming at a young age so they become used to the smells and sounds of the salon and the sensation of being groomed. Work with your local groomer to get your pet off to the best start and your dog will quickly learn to love it.

TOILET TRAINING One of the biggest challenges with a new puppy is toilet training. Generally, puppies need to urinate 5 minutes after food and defecate within 30 mins. By having consistent mealtimes, you can judge when your puppy will need to go outside. As puppies’ bladder control is weak make sure you are taking them out every 1-2 hours during the day. Avoid common errors such as overfeeding and punishing indoor accidents which can make the puppy scared to go to the toilet in front of you – even outside, and don’t leave your pup alone for too long. Allow time, have patience, be disciplined, and offer lots for praise, and before you know it your puppy will be house trained! But for those inevitable little accidents, remember we have a range of cleaning products.

To treat congested dull skin Hydrofacial is a needle free, zero down time indulgent glow giving facial. It comprises of a lymphatic drainage massage, exfoliation by way of glycolic or salicylic acid solution, extraction, a blast of LED light to zap bacteria and boost collagen production and finally a serum ‘infusion’ to leave skin soft and smooth. Hifu/Ulthera is innovative collagen-boosting treatment that uses precise, micro-focused ultrasound to target the deep structural layers of the skin without disrupting the skin’s surface. Elite Ulthera lifts, sculpts and tightens the skin at muscle level, as well as the superficial level (our skin), resulting in a really nice definition and youthful contour. This can be combined with filler for extra definition. The tech neck needs TLC and a combined modality approach.

To treat uneven texture

It has been a long lockdown and eventually we are gradually returning to a new normal. During the pandemic, I have found that Zoom has a lot to answer for! Many of us have seen our faces in ways we never thought we would - we may not have been socialising but social media and the rapid increase of video calling has given us the ability to see ourselves from an array of different angles. We are now more aware of how we look when we are speaking and animating, a big change from catching a glimpse in the bathroom mirror or a well angled selfie. Here are the treatments I recommend to offset the tell-tale signs of the lockdown face and body .

To treat dehydrated, lax, and dull skin Profhilo is a treatment which injects hyaluronic acid (not a filler) into the face, neck, or décolletage to rehydrate and re-texture crepey skin. Profhilo is amazing at supercharging and hydrating your skin. Think of it as a glow-giving injectable moisturiser which lasts around six months. It is a must have treatment and one of my personal favourites.

Chemical peels for after lockdown can give high results very quickly and treat concerns such as acne, pigmentation, fine lines, complexion textual issues and much more. Whilst skin shedding can occur with certain peels, it is not always necessary to achieve your desired results - however a course of peels is recommended.

To treat dark circles and the eye area We have witnessed an increase in requests for these treatment - it could be since the introduction of mask wearing that there is a greater emphasis on the eye area. Or maybe it is it thanks to Zoom meetings that people are noticing how tired they look. We cannot forget genetic and aging factors too. To correct the volume loss under the eye area, Tear Trough fillers are a good way to address this issue - however if like me you don’t want are or are unsuitable for fillers in this area, there are other treatments you could consider. •

Meline Dark Circle eye treatment improves and attenuates dark circles in the periorbital area.

“THERE ARE SO MANY UNSUNG HEROES”

For Glengormley nurse Linsey Sheerin, working through the pandemic was a surreal time but one she found extremely rewarding. It is International Year of the Nurse, but at the start of 2020 Linsey Sheerin wasn’t expecting any congratulations or praise for the job she loves.

ƒ Linsey Sheerin from Glengormley

Who would have believed that just a few months later, nurses and other NHS workers would be receiving rounds of applause on doorsteps across the nation? Mum-of-one Linsey from Glengormley, who is Service Manager at the Emergency Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital, has always enjoyed being a nurse. And she says she is proud to have been part of a team that worked full time under intense conditions during the pandemic. She explains: “If one good thing comes out of this, it is that nurses and health care professionals are getting the long overdue recognition they deserve. “I have never witnessed such dedication and teamwork and it makes me so proud.” Like all of us, it was in January when Linsey first began to hear rumours about the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping China. Towards the end of that month there were serious concerns that it was only a matter of time before it hit Northern Ireland. “We monitored the situation, but it didn’t

seem real until we saw it in Italy. At that point we knew we had to get ready. “We started to learn more about the virus, and we received training and took part in simulations. Everything swung into action very quickly. There are so many unsung heroes who worked round the clock to reconfigure the department to adhere to social distancing and to enable us to isolate people presenting with symptoms.” As the department geared up for the big changes about to happen, at home Linsey had to explain to her daughter Zoe that if things got bad, she might not be coming home for a long time. “At first there was such a sense of the unknown. No one knew what was going to happen. We were preparing for something, but we didn’t know what was going to happen. The waiting was hard, it made us all feel very anxious.

ƒ Linsey with her daughter Zoe and husband Neil 28 | Local Women Magazine

“I had to explain to my daughter that I might have to stay at the hospital. In work we all made preparations for that. No one knew if we would

have to sleep at the hospital or what was going to happen.” The anxiety experienced by the staff was also felt by patients. Many people attended hospital as they were convinced, they were displaying symptoms of Covid. “All the anxiety was heightened by having to get used to the full PPE that was now required. It’s very different working with colleagues in PPE as often you don’t even recognise them and communicating can be an issue. “Waiting for the storm to hit was tough but we were prepared. We got used to the new way of working. “Our team became closer and, in fact, we became closer with many of the other staff in the hospital. We became like a family. “Everyone pulled together and, although it was surreal, we got used to the new normal. “Right now, there is still a lot of work to do. We are busier than ever, and the work continues. “People can be reassured that if there is a second wave, we are ready. This time we will be even more prepared and can deal with whatever is thrown at us.”

“CARING DOESN’T FEEL LIKE WORK”

Rathfriland Domiciliary Care Worker, Susanne McCabe, has been working hard during the pandemic keeping her clients safe and now she is training to be a nurse. that everything was going to be okay.

Some people are born to be in a caring profession and Susanne McCabe from Rathfriland is a wonderful example of a true professional.

“Some of the older people were very anxious about what was going to happen. They were worried we weren’t going to come out to them anymore. I had to reassure them that we would be continuing with their care.

Having worked as a Domiciliary Care Worker throughout the pandemic, the 20-year-old is now planning on becoming a nurse. Susanne works in the community with elderly clients and those with physical and mental disabilities, delivering care plans.

ƒ Susanne and her family

However, she sees her role as more than just a job and has built relationships with her clients who she describes as “like a family.”

“There are changes of course. It takes longer to get ready to go into a house because you have to change completely into PPE. It cuts back on the time we have with our clients, but we have to stay safe “It was important that I did my best for my clients. Over the years I have grown so attached to many of them. I just want them to feel comfortable and not to worry.”

Susanne says: “I can honestly say I love my job. I wouldn’t want to do anything else.

Susanne’s work has inspired her to start studying for a nursing degree and she will be following in the footsteps of her mum Colleen who has been nursing throughout the crisis.

“Throughout the pandemic it’s been hard watching my friends all off on furlough while I have often worked seven days a week. But I don’t mind really. I l love what I do.”

But she intends to combine her work as a carer with her Open University degree.

When Susanne left school, she knew she wanted to go into a caring profession, but she didn’t want to go to university.

“I wouldn’t want to go to college full time, I want to continue working as I enjoy my job.

“I wanted to get started straight away. I found my job as a Domiciliary Care Worker and have never looked back. “Most days it doesn’t feel like a job. I visit lots of regular clients and I have built up an amazing relationship with many of them. I love helping and making people feel safe. It’s the perfect job for me.”

“It can be tough, but it is so rewarding. During the pandemic people have finally seen what carers like me do. We don’t get credit very often, so it was nice to be appreciated. “However, the work itself is so worthwhile that it is reward enough.”

But of course, Coronavirus has made Susanne’s job more difficult and she has had to adapt to lot of new safety measure to keep herself and her clients safe. Many of her clients are in vulnerable groups and so she has to wear PPE and received training on new safety protocols.

“I’M PRIVILEGED TO BE PART OF A FRONTLINE TEAM” Ballymoney nurse Colleen Morrison joined in the frontline battle against Covid-19 when she provided support to care homes.

If you had told Colleen Morrison at the start of the year that by April she would be working back on the frontline in a residential home, she wouldn’t have believed you. But for the dedicated Ballymoney Community Manager, the Covid-19 crisis has seen her move back into frontline nursing and, although it has been a tough time, she describes her new role as a ‘privilege’. Before the pandemic, the nurse of almost 40 years was working in a community management role, overseeing a team of health and social care professionals in the Ballymena and Antrim area. Although she found her job rewarding, it was a far cry from the busy days on the ward she remembered as a trainee nurse back in 1983. Colleen, 58, was able to use everything she had learned on the wards and community over the years, plus her extensive management experience, to play her part in the fight against Coronavirus in the care home sector. When it was revealed that care homes needed support to fight the pandemic, Colleen didn’t hesitate to volunteer herself. She explains: “I knew I needed to go into the homes myself. If I had an elderly relative, I would want to know that they were safe. It was important to see for myself what support the staff needed.” Mum-of-three Colleen organised a group of fellow health and social care professionals to go into local care homes to help support the staff through the unprecedented crisis. “I know the amazing work the carers in these care homes do. They have always gone above and beyond to look after their patients, but no one could have predicted what was about to happen. It was completely overwhelming. “I wanted to make sure we weren’t taking over; we needed to support their work and find new ways of working to keep staff and residents safe.” 30 | Local Women Magazine

ƒ Jessica and Emily with their mum Colleen. Jessica is a doctor working in a Covid Ward (right) and Emily is a chemical engineer (key worker - middle) working on respiratory drugs for a major pharmaceutical company (GSK.)

Over the past few weeks Colleen and her team have been working in various care homes throughout the area to offer help to staff who have been left to cope with a healthcare crisis that no one could have predicted. Her team including nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychology and mental health staff went into the homes to look at all aspects of care. “Basically, we wrapped a team round each home. Carers have a different job from nurses but we share the common bond of caring and compassion. Many of the carers regard their residents as family and they never hesitate to go above and beyond to look after them.” “During the Covid period it meant adopting new infection controls and protocols for both staff and patients.” “Although it has been years since I have been in frontline nursing, it was great to get back in and use my skills to help out. My team were just fantastic. It is a wonderful example of integrated working and an amazing team effort.” Colleen has the utmost respect for carers who have been tasked with a very difficult job over the past few weeks and months. “At no point did we take over, that wasn’t

our job. We were simply there to support. We had to help the carers adapt to a new normal and deal with the correct use of PPE and increased infection control. “I am so proud to be part of team that was able to help and do our bit. I feel very proud to be a nurse and it is so heartening see the good work people are doing. “I would like to reassure people that the situation is under control, and we are ready to go back into the care homes at any time should the situation arise. “It has been a tough few months but so worthwhile. Community care is a great place to work and I feel this situation has brought out the best in so many people.”

“I AM PROUD TO BE A NURSE”

Inishcarn nurse Patricia McDade’s working life was turned upside down as she set up a Covid Ward at Mid Ulster Hospital to help fight the pandemic. Managing the Covid Ward at Mid Ulster Hospital has given Patricia McDade a renewed pride in her profession and total appreciation of the wonderful colleagues who are part of her team.

ƒ Patricia with her daughters Kia and Dominique

Pre-pandemic mum-of-two Patricia from Iniscarn near Draperstown worked in management as a lead nurse at Mid Ulster Hospital and looked after a team of health care professionals as well as a 21-bed rehab ward. But in matter of days, Patricia’s working life was turned upside down as the hospital prepared for the Coronavirus pandemic. Patricia explains: “It started to gather pace around St Patrick’s Day. Obviously there had been lots of talk about the pandemic but around that time was when we knew things were going to change for us at Mid Ulster.

patient at all times.

“We needed to quickly convert the rehab ward into a Covid Ward. Everything needed stripped out and refitted within a matter of days. “It all happened so fast. The patients in rehab had to be fast tracked – thankfully most of them were able to return home and we had to get ready for something that we really couldn’t imagine. “While the refurbishments were being done, we had to carry out training programmes. Some of the people working with us had never worked on a ward before so we adopted a buddy scheme to help them bed in. “I can honestly say I have never seen such a dedicated team. Every single person working

“Obviously with the restrictions on visitors we had to find ways of helping the patients keep connected with their families and we used iPads and Zoom calls so they could communicate. ƒ Patricia McDade from Iniscarn

on that ward was vital from domestics, porters, nurses and doctors. “Everyone pulled together so well, and nothing was too much trouble. It was a difficult time but there was something uplifting about seeing people working together for the good.” During the months of May and June, the Covid Ward at Mid Ulster became busy. And Patricia says it was teamwork that pulled them through those dark days. “We became like a family and I am delighted that we had so many success stories coming out of that ward. Covid is such a terrible illness. Everything happens so fast. A patient would be fine in the morning, maybe with just a loss of appetite. By teatime they would have gone down badly. It comes on so fast which means added pressure on staff who need to be with the

Every nurse does their best. We all think, ‘what if this patient was my mum?’ And it helps us to be the best we can.” Patricia says she is proud to be a nurse and honoured that she and her team were able to run the ward. However, as the situation improves, she says she would like to see the ward return to a rehab facility. “I am confident that if a second wave comes, we are ready. I feel well prepared. We were able to act very quickly last time so now we know exactly what needs done. “I had tremendous support from my senior management team in particular director Phil Hughes, A/D Karen Harvey and Wendy Longshawe and I can’t thank them enough. “Now, I would very much like to get back to normal and while the situation is not over, I would like to urge people to be calm and sensible. “We are in control now and I am proud to say that I am a small part of the team that helped.” Local Women Magazine | 31

“THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF MY NURSING CAREER”

Staff Nurse at Altnagelvin’s Cardiology Ward, Lyndsey Nelis, has worked hard throughout the Covid-19 crisis keeping her patients safe. It was spring when Lyndsey Nelis from Derry realised that she was about to face the biggest challenge of her nursing career.

ƒ The rainbow of hope wall done by all the children of cardiology staff

As news of the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the nation, and in particular the dreadful news coming Italy where mortality rates were rocketing, it was clear this new virus was getting closer to home. Lyndsey says: “I knew it was only a matter of time before I was about to be fast tracked into the biggest challenge of my nursing career to date.” Working in an acute cardiology setting has its fair share of challenges on an average day, but Lyndsey says that what the ward experienced earlier this year was something completely different. It was a steep learning curve - they had no previous experience of Covid-19 or how to manage it, no way of knowing how quickly it was spreading, no previous experience of how to swab patients for Covid, but most importantly for Lyndsey and her colleagues, they had no previous experience of how to manage a cardiac arrest in this situation.

Thankfully the decision was made for all staff to take showers before and after work, wash their hair after every shift before going home and to change clothes and shoes before leaving the ward to help minimise the spread and everyone adhered to these new set of rules. As the situation unfolded, policies and procedures on the way to care for patients changed rapidly, sometimes on a daily basis, adding to the general stress on the ward. ƒ Lyndsey, Ronan and Dáirsaí. KERRY IS HELPING TO BRING DOWN BARRIERS Lurgan’s Kerry Anderson is working with charity ‘Beyond Skin’ which uses music, arts and new media to address racism and sectarianism.

A

By Maureen Coleman

s someone who believes passionately in equality, community relations and interaction between different cultures, Kerry Anderson knew she’d found the right fit with Beyond Skin when she went looking for a charity to volunteer with. A Masters student of conflict transformation and social justice at Queen’s University, the young Lurgan woman was inspired to devote her spare time to the Belfast-based organisation, which uses music, arts and new media as tools to address issues of racism and sectarianism. At school she’d been interested in humanitarianism but unsure about which path to take to lead her into charity work, she opted to study business and languages at Edinburgh Napier University. A short stint working in a restaurant proved unfulfilling, so she decided to follow her dream into non-governmental organisation (NGO) work by getting a foot on the rung of her chosen career ladder through volunteering. Beyond Skin was set up in January 2014 in response to the rise in racism and sectarianism influenced by the legacy of conflict. It designs and facilitates innovative music, arts and media projects that strengthen community relations, nurture peace processes, cultivate security and empower youth. Kerry began volunteering with the charity at the start of this year; her passion and potential was spotted by Beyond Skin’s founder Darren Ferguson and within weeks, Kerry had become a youth4peace ambassador. “Lockdown affected my mental health” Quarantine has been tough, but for those who had to completely shield because of autoimmune conditions, the situation was almost unbearable. Castlewellan mum Vicki Clarke tells Local Women how her mental and physical health deteriorated. By Maureen Coleman

hen Castlewellan mum-ofone Vicki Clarke was told she had to shield at the start of lockdown, it brought back terrible memories of the day she was diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions; systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and sarcoidosis. It’s rare for a person to receive such a debilitating double diagnosis and Vicki’s life was turned upside down. An active, sociable person, she had just given birth to son Calum 18 months previously and was also coping with the breakdown of her marriage when doctors told her the news. SLE affects multiple organs and tissues at the same time including heart, skin, joints, kidneys, liver and lungs. Sarcoidosis is another autoimmune disease, where inflammatory cells collect and form nodules in various tissues all over the body. The double whammy meant that Vicki, who lives outside Castlewellan with her five-yearold son Calum, lost some of her independence but was able to continue working for the family’s festive lighting company. At times it was a struggle though, particularly as a single parent, and there were occasions she felt isolated and low. The onset of lock-down dragged up some of those negative associations again as she and Calum were forced to cocoon at home, cut off from her family and friends. “Having to shield has been tough for both Calum and me but given that Covid attacks the lungs and that I’m on a lot of medication and autoimmune suppressants, I knew from the start that I’d have to shield,” Vicki says. 44 | Local Women Magazine

“It was just me and my son Calum indoors, under complete lockdown for eight weeks. I could feel my mental health deteriorating.”

“It was frightening. All I could think was that I had to protect myself and my son, to keep him with me at all times. Calum’s an only child but he thrives on interaction with other children. And he goes and visits his dad three times a week. None of this could happen through lockdown and I really suffered from major mummy guilt.

The Vicki’s daily routine changed dramatically in lock-down as she found herself homeschooling, trying to provide a full-time canteen of snacks and meals and being ‘supermummy’ to her young son. Unable to go out, she nominated her brother as her designated shopper. When the groceries arrived, she washed them down thoroughly and spent hours scrubbing floors and door handles, disinfecting every surface. Exhausted and stressed, Vicki broke out in rashes and eventually had to go and seek advice.

In my latest shielding letter, I’ve been told that from July 31 I can return to work and form a social bubble too.

FACTFILE

• Lupus and sarcoidosis are known for their intermittent nature of exacerbations. There are periods when the patient is free of symptoms (remission) followed by severe flare-ups (exacerbations). There is no fixed duration of either the remission or exacerbation. Sarcoidosis is thought to be a reaction to an erstwhile infection which continues despite the infection being over. Genetics play an important role in both. • Symptoms of lupus can be seen in all the systems it affects. In the skin we can see disc-shaped rashes, butterfly rash on nose and cheeks, hairfall, ulcers in mouth/nose/ vagina. It produces joint pains of the small joints of hands like knuckles, wrists with swelling and redness. Deformities of joints are rare. It causes anaemia and lowers platelet and white blood cell count of blood. It may cause inflammation of the linings of the heart like pericarditis, endocarditis or myocarditis. In the lungs it can cause inflammation of lungs’ covering called pleuritis, accumulation of fluid in lungs called effusion, haemorrhage into lungs, and diffuse inflammation of lung tissue. It can damage the kidneys leading to loss of protein and blood in urine. • Sarcoidosis produces symptoms wherever the nodules of the cells are formed. Liver, lungs, skin, eyes, brain, heart and blood may be affected. Lungs are affected most often having nodules and progressive breathlessness due to widespread inflammation within lung tissue. Enlargement of lymph nodes, inflammation of layers of eye called uveitis, damage to heart valves, anaemia and spleen enlargement, pain in peripheral nerves, patchy hair fall, and dry mouth are all manifestations from the other systems it affects. Joints and kidneys are rarely affected unlike lupus.

Mairead Monds, who now lives in Belfast, also revealed that across the UK, from January 10 to May 10, 2020, Childline delivered 6,938 counselling sessions to children and young people who have got in touch about coronavirus. The service manager said: “The 24/7 news cycle about coronavirus is causing huge worry and anxiety in young people – particularly those who are already coping with many other issues in their lives. “Childline provides an essential service to vulnerable children, some of whom may be in a life-threatening situation, which is why our staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to keep Childline running. “While we are all facing events unprecedented in modern time keeping children safe and providing them with a space to talk about their concerns is our number one priority.” She also explained what it was like working on the vital service at the height of the pandemic where her team were dealing with children and young people getting in touch on the phone and online with their worries and fears. Mairead said: “Personally, it was lovely to have a routine during the peak of pandemic and it was also great to know that we were there for children and young people at times when they were afraid and frightened and needed a reassuring ear. “It was heartening how the staff team all

A city pad with garden retreat and space to work

H

omeware buyer Jayne Stewart has an eye for the visual. With a demanding job in retail, necessitating constant travel, and a need to work from home regularly, Jayne embarked on a project in 2018 to reconfigure her home to give her the extra space she needed to fit a home office, an extra bedroom, a walk in shower and allow her to completely change her garden area.

Jayne Stewart made great use of the space gained from removing the oil tank.

Purchasing her home in 2007 Jayne’s house sits on a corner site in a development with passing traffic. When she bought the house a large driveway dominated the outdoor area leaving very little garden space, and what was there, was heavily overlooked by the house at the back. With big ambitions and a passion for design she began to rethink the space she had available and the true potential of her home. “It all started with natural gas.” She said. “I knew that natural gas was available and that by installing it I could get rid of water tanks, pipework and boilers allowing me to reclaim much needed space. I asked an installer to come out and provide me with a quote. At £2k I figured the price wasn’t too bad especially as I had every intention of staying in my home long term. I was even offered the opportunity of spreading the cost over a year making it an easy choice.” Installing gas couldn’t have been easier. The installer was in and out in a day taking my oil tank and water cylinders and boiler away and leaving me with one sleek box which allowed me to control my new heating system and firmus energy made it super easy to get connected. Then I got stuck in to improving my home.”

was much cleaner. I fenced in the area I had available and extended it into the driveway reconfiguring it so that the space worked better, added decking and then painted it up. I planted bamboo cane which not only gives me privacy but a beautiful sound with the breeze flows through it. Then I added raised beds for planting and even added a bird nest.” The removal of the water tank and pipes enabled Jayne to convert her attic to a home office.

My ambition was to create a separate home office in a contained space where I could keep files and folders and home paperwork. I began to look at my attic as a great place for this, and a chat with an architect, confirmed I had the head room to do the job properly. Working to a tight budget I inserted an unobtrusive staircase into a third bedroom to give me access to the third floor, then it was a matter of replastering and painting. This space now houses a fully functional office, complete with a printer, filing cabinets and space for all my work and home paperwork. I was also able to build in extra overspill storage space for little used items which allows me to keep clutter away from the rest of the house. Importantly for me, as I often work from home, it means I can keep my work and downtime separate. Once I come down the having a walk in shower has made her life easier. stairs, I’ve walked out of work. And because it’s on another floor I don’t see the office from the But the home improvement didn’t stop there. Last year her focus was to create a private rest of the house. Perfect! Jayne simultaneously reconfigured her outdoor sanctuary out of fairly limited space in bathroom adding a walk in shower to the space her outdoor area.

Solar lighting, outdoor mirrors, a fairly inexpensive table and chairs, a built in barbecue and outdoor work surfaces all have added to the functionality of the space and helped Jayne give the area a beautiful ambience at night. She says: “I’m really pleased with it. Despite only being 30 square feet the area is quite cool and friends and family tell me they like hanging out there day and night. It must be alright, two birds have even decided to make it their summer home and have nested there!” And in terms of budget? Jayne says: “I didn’t have a huge budget for the improvements even the attic conversion! I’m pretty good with a drill and ikea isn’t too far away. But the money I have invested, has made a real difference to the way I live. It’s made my life easier. With a place for everything I feel more in control and I really love hanging out at home. I had my house valued recently and evidently I’ve made the money invested back three-fold so I’m pretty happy with that!

To date, over 100,000 customers have connected to natural gas with firmus energy and are enjoying the benefits that natural gas brings - from constant hot water, to more space in the garden, more efficient boilers to simply being a better choice for the environment. Homes and businesses interested in making the switch to firmus energy natural gas can find out more by calling 0330 024 9000 or and with family and friends staying often, She says: “With the oil tank gone the space visiting www.firmusenergy.co.uk 52 | Local Women Magazine

THE LESSONS LEARNT…FROM MUM Castlederg’s Johann Muldoon tells Local Women how the unwavering support she received from her mum Patricia set her on the road to success and inspired her to set up an online forum where women can support each other.

T

By Lisa Smyth

hey say there is nothing like a mother’s love.

And that is certainly true for the bond between Johann Muldoon and her mum, Patricia. Growing up in Castlederg, Johann was bullied by her classmates and even picked on by her teachers and through it all, Patricia was her biggest champion. When Johann was nine, Patricia found the money to pay for her to attend Omagh Academy – setting her on the path to happiness and success. Over the years, Johann has gone on to prove her doubters wrong and she now juggles her time between raising her three children and taking her Moneymore-based business to a global level. Despite how busy she is, however, Johann is now channelling her efforts into setting up a charity aimed at helping and empowering women – and unsurprisingly the inspiration for Platform NI is Patricia. She said: “My mum was such a big influence on me, she was a community psychiatric nurse and she spent her life helping people. “When I was small, she used to take me out to work with her and she would always explain to me that you should never judge anyone. “She had unfaltering confidence in me, unfaltering loyalty to me. “I remember going to a cross country race event when I was 12 and I hated cross country, I’m more of a sprinter, I prefer fast results.

“She said to me, ‘someone has to come first, and it might be you’, and that’s always stuck with me. 56 | Local Women Magazine

ƒ Johann became the first woman in Northern Ireland to receive an MBE for architecture

“Everything I’ve done since then; I’ve always thought about what she said to me.” Tragically, Patricia died when she was just 55 years old, and Johann has felt her loss every day since then. “It was sudden, she had breast cancer when she was 42 but she had recovered from it and it had never come back,” continued Johann, mum to Conn (5), Erin (4) and two-year-old Jack. “However, it was oestrogen dependent and they removed her ovaries and her womb, and she went through the menopause very quickly as a result. “After that she developed epilepsy, it caused quite a few problems, she also had vertigo.

ƒ Johann is constantly inspired by her mum

“Within three months it was the largest private group of its kind in the country and now has over 8,000 members.”

“She was on medication for the epilepsy as it was quite severe and then she had a seizure in her sleep and that’s when she passed away.

So, she started to work towards launching Platform NI.

“It was horrendous, it was the thing I always feared because she was always my safety blanket, when things went wrong, she fixed them, she made things better even just by talking about them.

Johann continued: “I’ve been involved in many groups myself over the years, but there were none that fitted across the board, for those retired, stay at home, business people, professionals, there were all quite specific, but I wanted to give a voice to all women irrelevant of their situation.

“I still feel the loss now, it’s always there, I constantly think about her in some way or another. “It’s not in a negative way, I’m not sitting around crying, but I’m aware of the loss and what impact she had on my life.” Johann knew that she wanted to do something to honour her mum, but it wasn’t until the death of a dear friend in September last year that she began to put her plans into action. “I went to see her in Omagh Hospital, and we spent time together talking about our lives,” said Johann. “We’d had great fun with each other over the years, we had great stories that will never be told. “When we were talking, she mentioned ƒ Johann is on a mission to help other women

“The stories which have been shared and the positivity which the group has created, down completely to the women within it, led me to about how I spoke at my mum’s funeral and establish the charity.” she said I could have such great influence It has a number of objectives – in particular, than I think possible. Johann is keen to address issues relating to “She said it because even though my heart was childcare, retraining, and mental health and breaking, I was able to get up and speak from the well-being. heart about my mum. “I’m looking forward to seeing change happen “I’d never thought about it in that way and then and being part of the process. when I left, I knew it was the last time I would “I’m working with a number of other women, see her, and I was walking out of the hospital and who are successful, who represent different I was so upset. groups of women, and we’re working to develop “I was thinking about her and my mum, these befriending and support groups. two, wonderful women, who had achieved such “One of them is Maureen Owens, who has wonderful things in their lives, and their stories were being lost, no-one would know how great worked and run two businesses and is also an administrator for Families Moving On, set up they were. after the Omagh bomb. “It was then that I decided I was going to “They are all amazing women and they’re do something, and I went home and set up a committed to making a difference. WELCOME BACK TO PORTSTEWART FAMILY DENTAL What we are doing to keep you and our team safe. 10.

We are excited to have the opportunity to welcome you back! Our practice has always utilised personal protective equipment (PPE) that has exceeded all the RQIA guidelines, however, in light of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we have instituted additional guidelines and protocols to ensure your safety.

From Monday, June 29, we have been allowed to see patients requiring non aerosol generating procedures. Then from July 20, we will be allowed to perform aerosol generating procedures, however if all the necessary PPE is in place this can be fast tracked to the beginning of July. We will be contacting all patients that had outstanding treatments prior to the lockdown and also any that required emergency treatments during the lockdown. This may take a little time to work through, so please be patient. You will see many changes, including new ways of arranging your appointments. First, you will be contacted 48-72 hours prior to your appointment via phone, or email and asked a set of health-related questions. It is required that we complete this questionnaire prior to your appointment. We will have to reschedule your appointment if we are unable to complete this step. Below is a list of some of the enhanced precautions we have taken to protect you in addition to extensive team training on infection control and patient management procedures.

1.

Payment arrangements in advance to avoid delay and allow contactless exit from the appointment.

11.

Enhanced operatory disinfection procedures of all surfaces between patients.

12.

Ambient air management with HEPA 13 air filtration continuously in treatment rooms and common areas to remove germs from circulating air.

13.

Enhanced operatory disinfection procedures before and after all appointments with mist or fogging devices to access hard to reach places that can be easily missed.

3.

Removal of magazines and items that can harbour or transfer germs of any kind. Hand sanitisers will be positioned throughout the clinic.

4.

Providing more education materials to enhance your awareness of health issues related to this pandemic.

5.

We require a mask to be worn by ALL patients upon entering the practice.

6.

We have installed sneeze guards or droplet barriers at all reception areas.

7.

We require hand washing and hand sanitising before all appointments by our team and by our patients.

Personalised arrival procedures to guide you from your car directly to treatment rooms to eliminate contacting surfaces.

The recording of temperatures of every patient upon entering the office.

2.

The recording of temperatures of every team member each day at beginning of work period.

Maintaining distancing in the reception area for essential caregivers and parents of minors if they cannot wait in a vehicle or outside the clinic. 58 | Local Women Magazine

8. 9.

14.

New personal protection equipment like visors, gowns, and masks for our dentists, hygienist, and nurses to provide barriers against the smallest of germs. These gowns will be worn when an aerosol generating exposure is taking place i.e. a drill is being used or a scaling is being completed using a cavitron or ultrasonic. Even though we will look a little different it will still be the same friendly team underneath.

15.

The introduction of protocols to reduce or eliminate airborne aerosols during all dental procedures.

Established since 2000

Dine in Style with our new furniture ranges, on display now!

16.

Enhanced nightly disinfection procedures of equipment and office fixtures like computers, keyboards, telephones, tablets, chairs, doorknobs, and buttons that may be touched unconsciously.

17.

Disinfection of all outside mail and packages that enter the building.

As well as all this, we now have longer appointment times for you to prepare and complete all appointment tasks and duties in the safest and most comprehensive manner. An aerosol generating exposure when performed in the surgery means that little droplets in the air could potentially contain the virus. Under current guidelines we are advised to leave the room after a patient has had a filling done and not to re-enter for 60 minutes to allow for the droplets to fall to the ground and work surfaces. Once this has happened it is then safe to thoroughly clean every surface in that room. This has a big impact on the numbers of patients that can be seen during a day. So, for us instead of each dentist being able to see approx. 20-30 patients a day, we maybe only able to see five patients each a day if those patients need fillings. Therefore, patients will likely have to wait a little longer for their appointments, and I do apologise for this however we are under strict Government guidelines at present to protect both you, the wider population, and our staff. Look forward to seeing you soon!

‘Locktails’ AND TAKEAWAYS

Introducing Local Women’s new food and drink columnist Paula Gracey who has discovered some takeaway treasures during lockdown.

S

o, how was lockdown for you? Did you bake banana bread, unleash your gardening skills or become a Friday night Zoom quizmaster?

resumed, just let me out there! I intend to go everywhere unashamedly overdressed from now on – I have spent too long in Lycra workout gear.

ƒ Paula

My way through the misery was helped by my love of yoga in particular but exercising generally (three times a day during lockdown), music (getting lost in my iPod on my daily walk around the park saved my soul) and a tipple of an evening – and judging by the sales in alcohol during lockdown, I wasn’t the only one! Admittedly, I did not have home schooling to contend with as our wee family consists of hubby, me and Mr Bojangles, our cat and undisputed boss of the house. As hubby and I struggled with working from home (it does not suit us at all) our challenge was to make the weekends different to escape the feeling of groundhog day, so a cheeky takeaway and the best wines were saved for a Saturday night – we needed something to look forward to!

At least I have been looking after my skin and hair as I am such a product junkie with enough make up to start a shop of my own. Molton Brown, Liz Earle, Korres, Elemis… my bathroom is my sanctuary – until hubby comes along and puts his shaving stuff in there – boys are so messy! Cats could teach them a thing or two.

LOCKDOWN FAVOURITES ƒ Paula’s cat Mr Bojangles

Takeaway: Pizza On The Square, Belfast. Generously topped on a thin base and delivered in person by entrepreneur owner Gerry Carlile, though we would have preferred his business partner, the football star Niall McGinn!

Under normal circumstances we have very busy social lives and a Saturday night in was always a treat for us – not anymore when this is all over. Admittedly, I even discovered a new skill …fridge and freezer foraging - turning unidentified lumps into a la carte creations. My favourite kitchen gadget, the slow cooker, has never been busier. It creates magic out of a few ingredients and so far has produced Lemon Chicken and melt in the mouth gammon with garlic and onions, to name but a few.

And finally, my No1 Locktail… Negroni. You’ll need one-part Gin, one-part Campari and one part Vermouth Rosso, stirred, not shaken and poured over ice in an oldfashioned ‘rocks’ glass, garnished with a slice of orange. Salud!

But mostly, we got through thanks to everything from tapas from Lidl and three for £10 Indian deals from Marksys to full scale takeaway meals from our favourite restaurants. They only reminded us of what we were missing and now we can’t wait to get back to regular haunts like Howard Street, Mumbai 27 and Hadskis in Belfast, Noble and the splendid Rayanne House at Holywood, the Ramore in Portrush, Noel McMeel’s Catalan at Lough Erne, Galgorm’s River Room, Wine and Brine in Moira, the Parson’s Nose in Hillsborough and Courtney’s magnificent steakhouse in Newry. When we’re not wining and dining, I am equally mad

Wine: Finca La Estacada – a very tasty Spanish Tempranillo, £9 from Direct Wine Shipments, a real weekend treat.

about fashion and an obsessive online shopper. I am always buying clothes and don’t even start me on shoes and boots, Millars of Lurgan being my shoe heaven, but the entire time we have been in lockdown I have not bought one thing to wear… completely unheard of! Where was I going to wear them? Now that the lockdown is easing and slightly normal service has well and truly

STUDYING, WORKING, AND SCHOOLING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC Magherafelt mum Carol McCready continued her studies alongside working on the frontline during Covid-19

A

Magherafelt mother of three who is juggling parttime study at Northern Regional College with her work as a senior care assistant says the support from her lecturers has been excellent. Carol McCready has two sons aged nine and six years and a three-year-old daughter. She works as a senior care assistant in a local care home and decided to do a Level 4 in Healthcare Practice to help progress her career. Although she has more than eight years working in a healthcare environment and is an experienced care worker, Carol said the course has really helped in her role as a senior care worker. “The course is very practice based so it has given me have a better understanding as to why things are done in a particular way. Being able to follow a routine and do the work is one thing but knowing the reason for the routine really helps.” Carol knew when she started the course at the College’s Magherafelt campus last September that balancing family commitments with working nights in the care home was always going to be a challenge. Nothing could have prepared her for the challenge of doing it all during the Covid-19 pandemic. “I work nights and am responsible for looking after eight residents. I enjoy my work and always try to have a friendly face and a positive attitude but when we have to wear masks, it can upset the residents and some of them may need a lot of reassurance.” She said studying through the pandemic has been challenging for a number of different reasons: “It’s hard being out of the classroom and having to do the course online. I miss the face to face learning with my tutors and contact with other students and it can be hard to concentrate as I’m also helping the children with their schoolwork during the day.” Carol completed a Level 2 Healthcare course in 2012 and although she had plenty of practical experience, she admits that it did take her a while to get back into the way of studying. “I did feel bit out of my depth at times, but the tutors have been excellent. They were always very understanding and supportive and now that we are having to do everything online, if I have any queries, I email, and they respond very quickly.” Healthcare lecturer Eimear Lennon, who co-ordinates the Level 4 programme at Magherafelt, said she had great admiration for students like Carol who are doing “a wonderful job in very stressful and challenging circumstances.” “I feel they deserve great credit for the selfless way they are risking their lives working at the frontline while continuing with their coursework and home schooling their children.” 64 | Local Women Magazine

A unique way to tackle stress June Burgess from Comber is running Horse Assisted Workshops to help overcome stress and anxiety, build confidence and selfesteem and remind you how powerful you really are.

I

n today’s automated world where our lives revolve around our phones, we are losing the ability to really connect and communicate effectively with each other, creating problems in the workplace and also at home. Covid-19 has created additional stress and mental health problems and exacerbated existing ones. Based at Ballygraffan, Comber on the shores of Belfast Lough, June Burgess at Horses For People has been working with a variety of clients over the past six years, enabling them to overcome the challenges of everyday life and in particular, PTSD. She has a very special team of helpers – her horses. Living in such a relaxing environment and surrounded by horses and wildlife has always been June’s secret weapon for tackling stress and maintaining a balanced perspective on life. She discovered that many others had recognised the mental and physical benefits of this combination of a stress-free environment and horses as facilitators and that particularly in USA, Equine Assisted Learning was widely recognised as an effective approach for corporate leadership training, mental health challenges, drug rehabilitation and combatting stress in general. Horse Assisted workshops benefit anyone who would like to learn more about themselves and how others perceive them and acquire tools to thrive regardless of challenges or circumstances. There is no riding involved. The personal insights are gained through a series of ground-based exercises, interacting with the horses. Each exercise demonstrates existing behaviours, reactions and thought patterns and once highlighted, these can be changed. Don’t let a fear of horses hold you back – that initial trepidation only serves to make the benefits even greater! Utilising horses to support self-discovery for individuals and groups promotes insight in a new and exciting manner and is incredibly effective. Grateful and blessed to be back! The Ballymena and Ballymoney branches of Blossom & Birch have gladly opened their doors again We missed every single one of our clients throughout these months, but sometimes it takes something like this to happen to make us appreciate the little things in life and just live in the now. I could not wait to get back to work and have counted down the hours - now I treasure every hour in work. Blossom & Birch will be making a few exciting changes, but don’t worry, we will keep you all in the loop through our blog. But, enough about us, let’s get to the flowers which I’m sure you’ve all missed as much as me!

FLOWER OF THE MONTH We have chosen Larkspur a beautiful, delicate flower growing locally throughout the UK, this wild looking beauty is also the birth flower for any of our readers born this month! Larkspur signifies love and joy. It is also part of the Delphinium family, it enjoys our cooler weather when grown but is a beautiful cut flower as well. These tall steams of wild looking flowers make the perfect centre piece to any garden or floral arrangement, making it our flower of the month. Coming in some of the most beautiful colours going from pale pink to vibrant purple, we know you will love these as much as us. But, with all things wild, they don’t have a great shelf life, so are to be enjoyed for their beauty as long as you can.

FLOWER POWER

2 white peonies

There is power in flowers, even just in sending them. When someone receives a stunning bouquet of flowers handcrafted for them, it’s a great boost knowing someone has been thinking of you. Then there is having the beautiful flowers in your home brightening up the house and bringing good energy into the surroundings.

5 peach carnations

Flowers have been shown to improve mood, concentration, memory, and aid in relaxation making you feel better faster! So, there is truth behind the powers of flowers.

AT HOME: PEACHES & CREAM

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Something to cut your blooms with. A good pair of floristry scissors is always good to have. Pot tape if handy but grab some Sellotape if you have none. A vase, urn or container that will allow you to tape to complete your arrangement. FLOWERS: • 3 peach roses •

3 peach carnations

A beautiful mix of foliage you’ll need roughly 7l8 steams (if you have a garden don’t be afraid to cut some hedges and go wild with your arrangement this won’t only save you money, but will also give you a little proud moment when you look at your design with its home grown foliage). INSTRUCTIONS: Tape across your chosen container or vase making a grid like design, (like you’re marking out knots and crosses) this will give you a frame to arrange your blooms in to keeping them in place without using any foam or other materials. This is perfect to do with hand tied flowers you’ve bought that you want to place into a vase without losing the effect of the flowers being arranged (you can adapt this method to use throughout your floral arranging journey).

to be used in the design. It may lean to the right or may be better for your focal point in the middle. Once you have your base of foliage, start adding your blooms, leaving room in between each bloom for the birds and bees - this stops your design from being too clumped together and lets it flow better. Make sure all your stems are cut at an angle and keep all your stems long enough to reach the water. TOP TIP: Only cut a small bit off your stem at a time and then place into your vase. If it doesn’t look right, just gently pull out your chosen bloom and trim another little bit off the stem. This makes sure you don’t cut too much off from the start. You can always take some extra off, but you can’t add any on once you’ve cut.

You want to start off with your foliage as this will give you a good base and framework to place your flowers in and around. Slip your chosen stems through the squares of your grid, letting them fall or lean where they want. Take time to look at your flowers as each one will tell you how it wants

HOSTING THE PERFECT

GARDEN PARTY Style Guide

The number one priority at any garden party is to be comfortable - think loose-fitting shapes and cool fabrics. We’ve come up with a few ideas for you to create the perfect ensemble as you host the perfect outdoor Summer soirée.

Dresses A comfortable dress or floaty jumpsuit is the perfect outfit for a garden party – especially if the weatherman is on your side. A simple stripe or classic floral print screams summertime and will look good right into Autumn. Team them with a clean white trainer and a crossbody bag for the ultimate garden-party look.

H

i everyone and welcome to July’s edition of the Kular Fashion column. We’re so excited to see some kind of normality back in the city with so many local businesses reopening their doors. We were delighted to open our doors again on Friday 12th June and have loved seeing all your friendly faces back in the shop. We have several measures in place to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe shopping trip. This month’s column is all about garden parties. As the temperatures continue to rise and lockdown restrictions ease more and more, we love having the opportunity to spend quality time with our families and friends (even if it is from a safe distance). We find ourselves sitting in the garden more now than ever before. And we’re not complaining - the good weather is a great distraction to these testing times. Now is the perfect chance to dust off your garden furniture and invite your loved one’s round for a garden party. There are a few different elements to throwing the perfect garden party, which we’re going to cover in this month’s column.

82 | Local Women Magazine

Summer Knits We’ve been spoiled with the sun this year so far, but let’s face it, it gets a little chilly in the evening. A great way to cover up in style is to add a light-weight knit to your summer wardrobe. The classic cardigan with a deep V neckline is huge for Summer 2020. This Ted Baker style is classic and chic and will serve you for many Summers to come.

Denim A denim jacket is a perfect cover-up for Summer nights and a must-have in everyone’s wardrobe. This Levi’s Boyfriend Trucker Jacket is designed with an extra silhouette, giving you that extra comfort as you relax in the garden.

Food If you already have a BBQ (and the cooking skills), then grab some burgers and sausages from your local butcher and fire up the barbie. Halloumi, sweet potato or aubergine are great vegan/vegetarian alternatives. It’s the condiments and sides that take a BBQ from standard to exceptional. Make sure you have delicious fresh burger buns, a range of different sauces including relish and mustard as well as a freshly made salad. Why not challenge yourself to make a home-made coleslaw and potato salad? We’re hungry just thinking about it…yum!

Drinks A jug of cocktails is sure to put a smile on your guests’ faces. Here are two of our favourite cocktails that are super easy to make, but taste delicious.

Sea Breeze Blend vodka, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice to make a classic sea breeze cocktail. Serve in a tall glass and garnish with lime for a taste of summer

Mango & Pineapple Mojito Tip the pineapple, mango, limes and sugar into a large jug and muddle together. Bruise and add the mint leaves, then top with ice. Stir in the white rum, pineapple rum and sparkling water.

Music Music is a critical part of any party – you have to create the right vibes so your guests can relax and enjoy themselves. But worry not, Spotify already have lots of Garden Party playlists already created for you. So, get Alexa hooked up and ready to play. Alternatively, you could ask your guests to send threw song suggestions beforehand and make a personalised playlist so you know they’ll definitely love what they hear.

Call in-store and our friendly team will help you create the perfect look for a garden party this summer.

“TRUST THE WAIT, EMBRACE THE UNCERTAINTY. WHEN NOTHING IS CERTAIN, ANYTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.”

As lockdown eases Local Women columnist and blogger Hollie Campbell urges a little patience and self-reflection. Change can be risky, it can be difficult, but it grateful etc. Many of us lost our jobs, many of can also be beautiful, and it will always show us struggled, but as the weeks went by, I kept reminding myself I’m healthy and I’m alive. you more of yourself. From March we began to appreciate our health care workers more so than we ever did, we saw every health care and social care workers as our hero’s, not the pop stars or the footballers and the other multi-millionaires. We went through all the feelings - confused, We saw our neighbours, our friends, family worried, annoyed, angry, happy, thankful, members and people in our local community as the real hero’s in the world! I sincerely hope this stays this way and it is a pity it took a global pandemic to realise this, but may we never forget it. From March all of our lives changed - it didn’t matter how rich you were, how poor you were or what size of house you lived in, your life changed in some way. It was out of our control and there was nothing any of us could do.

I myself worked in a care home as part of my HND care practice course (work experience) years ago. As part of my course I worked for six weeks in the setting and I continued it after part time for several months. I left that place a different person - the respect and dignity that I felt for every care worker in those care homes safe, be patient and let’s look forward to a was very different to before. I’ve never been in better future. a job so tough but also so rewarding. Love I am a blood donor and have been for many years now. An extremely rewarding and free thing to do for many others. Every time I donate, I think, “how many lives did my blood just save?” Please consider becoming one - it’s the most amazing feeling. It’s a good way of saying thank you to all our health care workers and to everyone in general as it is going to help someone somewhere. Someone’s child, someone’s daddy or mummy. LOCKDOWN SAVED MY LIFE For Local Women columnist Lesley McGarrity, lockdown forced her to pause and re-evaluate a busy life that was making her ill.

O

nce the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through or how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in.

selfish, as I know this pandemic has caused and is still causing heartbreak to many families, but it could not have happened at a better time for me and I actually believe it has saved me and made me reflect on the bigger picture around me.

While normal life still seems far away, I can promise you we are getting closer to the other side of lockdown. This I am not sure about all you guys, realisation is a relief for some, but the pause button could not including myself, because to have come at a better time for be honest I am going insane me personally. I was spending working and living from the same all my time running around space, day in and day out. I don’t so much, working on one intend to continue on the selfthing after another. Until destruct path I was on, but I am one point, when I was like, naturally loving, fun and tactile “Am I doing enough, or am person, with a short span of I doing too much?” Now, I attention. So, I have to be can confidently say I was inspired constantly and I doing far too much. “Is all your running around and hard work need physical interaction. productive or are you just a busy fool?” I I like to surround myself would love to ask each one of your reading with positive like-minded this that questions because the stark reality people, so I am most definitely on is many of us are busy fools at times. an exciting countdown now, just waiting Thankfully for me on this occasion, all my like a caged animal to be fully released effort with my work and personal life were back into the wild. I know it’s not the same productive, that saying, it came at a very for everybody and for some it’s a daunting and unnerving time, as we prepare for life heavy cost! My running around, chaotic lifestyle and after lockdown and what is going to be the burning the candle at both ends, resulted new ‘normal.’ But, I for one have enjoyed in a very unpleasant Mild Heart Attack, the pause button, but I am refreshed, firing just weeks before the lockdown started and on all cylinders and ready to hit play again guess what? That still didn’t slow me down, in the game of life! However, it’s not going to be an easy smooth transition back as nobody really knows how Yes, you are right in thinking, I was seriously to prepare for the ‘new normal.’ We watch so on a path to self-destruction. So, it may sound much stuff on TV and online platforms, that we often find ourselves swimming or should I say drowning in nonsensical information. For the last couple of months, we have all been psychoanalysing everything and everyone in our lives. Which means we are now the masters at knowing where we have been going wrong in our it just meant I was now dependent on blood pressure medication for the rest of my life!

lives to date, and we also know by now what we need to do to change that. If you don’t have all the answers to your new life after lockdown, that what have you been doing these last weeks?? Whatever you have been doing I suppose the main thing you should be thankful for is, you have survived it! You may have done that in your individual way, whether it be through exercise, maybe it was eating and drinking your way through it - one thing is for sure, the end of lockdown is coming. So, If you haven’t already started planning , you need to from this day for the new normal life you are going to be living. Make your changes now, this is a fresh start for everyone so start as you mean to go on and remember that “failing to plan, is planning to fail” - so start changing your destiny now. I would like to wish you all a happy ‘new normal” life.

WIN AN ELAVE SUN SAFE BUNDLE Northern Ireland is set for a sizzling July according to long range weather forecasters. Karen Johnston, Elave Skincare Advisor, offers tips on how to stay safe as we continue to ease out of lockdown and into the great outdoors

S

kin cancer is the most common form of cancer on the island of Ireland, with 90% of malignant and non-malignant melanomas thought to be caused by over-exposure to ultra violet light from the sun or sunbeds.

Elave’s Sun Safe Essentials for adults bundle protects you while you socialise. This money-saving offer £35.99 (RRP £41.50) - includes:

Sunny or cloudy, it is important to protect your skin from April to September – even in Northern Ireland. While you cannot see or feel ultra violet rays, up to 90% of UV can get through light cloud, meaning your skin can get damaged even on a cool day. Karen Johnston of Elave Skincare explains: “UV light is transmitted in three wavelengths. The first, UVA, is associated with ageing because it affects the elastin in the skin, leading to wrinkles, leatheriness and brown pigmentation, as well as skin cancer. UVA can penetrate window glass. “The second, UVB, is mostly responsible for sunburn and has strong links to many types of skin cancer, including malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. Luckily, UVC does not penetrate the earth’s atmosphere, so we really only need to protect against UVA and UVB. “When our skin is exposed to sunlight it produces

• more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its natural • colour) in an attempt to absorb more UV radiation. As • a result, the skin darkens. A tan is actually a sign the skin is damaged!”

Melanin levels differ from person to person and ethnic background, so not everyone has the same level of protection. Dermatologists divide skin types into six categories, from Phototype 1 (fair skin which burns easily) to Phototype 6 (darker black skin that does not burn easily). “You can protect yourself against photo ageing and skin cancer by using a sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to help block UVB rays and prevent burning,” says Karen. “Also, it helps to wear a hat and sunglasses, cover up in loose fitting clothing, and seek shade between 11am and 3pm.

“All sunscreens protect against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancers. However, SPF does not apply to UVA rays, which are also harmful. To get best protection, choose a broad spectrum sunscreen. Only products which protect against both UVA and UVB rays can be labelled ‘broad spectrum’.” At the same time as enjoying our daily dose of Vitamin D, we all need to continue practising safe personal hygiene, to avoid picking up or passing on Covid-19. To get the best protection for your hands, you need a sanitiser which contains 70% alcohol, as well as gentle aloe vera.

Make sure the littles ones stay safe too, with the super value Sun Safe Baby/Junior Essentials bundle - £35.99 (RRP: £41.50) – which includes:

“Sunscreens can cause confusion because of the jargon used around them. SPF measures how long a sunscreen will protect you from UVB rays. For example, assuming correct application, if you normally burn after 20 minutes in the sun, an SPF30 protects you for about 20 mins x 30, or 10 hours.

“Now, more than ever, children are reliant on their community to raise concerns when schools, family and their usual network of support aren’t able to help.” Claire, who is a qualified social worker, started work with NSPCC as a student when she volunteered with their Childline service and then joined the helpline in 2019. She said: “It’s never been more important for me to go to work and the NSPCC helpline has never been more vital. “Now, more than ever, children are reliant on their community to raise concerns when schools, family and their usual network of support aren’t able to help because of the lockdown. Work has been incredibly busy over the last few months and I have had a lot more calls about domestic abuse as well as from neighbours who are worried about children being abused. “Sometimes people call about something that just that doesn’t seem right, and their concerns can build and build. My advice is not to disregard these feelings - talk about them and talk to us. I’m proud to be a member of the helpline and know that we are able to help all members of society safeguard their families and their communities at this very difficult time. Speaking about her role in the commercial, Claire said: “It’s true that every day

is different at the helpline but I never thought I would end up on TV. Filming the commercial was so much fun and a really unusual experience because I actually had to do my own filming at home because of the lockdown. “I was lucky to have an amazing team who supported me, talked me through everything and I even had my own Whatsapp chat group set up for me to send all my test shots. However, it’s a little strange thinking that everyone will see me in my home or making a cup of tea in my kitchen!” The commercial could not be more timely as the charity has recently published the latest data from its helpline which shows that the crisis has exacerbated existing risks for children and created new ones. •

In the month since lockdown there have been a total of 5,237 contacts to the helpline from across the UK from adults concerned about the wellbeing and safety of a child

Of these, 817 contacts were from adults with worries about parents and carers misusing alcohol and other substances, a 22% increase on the four weeks prior to March 23

Other issues where there has been a double-digit percentage increase in contacts from across the UK include domestic abuse (10%) and emotional abuse (50%)

From April 13 to 19 the NSPCC helpline received 1,580 contacts from across the UK, the highest number in a single week in 2020.

Mike McGrath, Head of Partnerships at the NSPCC, said: “With the world being

We are delighted with this support from Calpol which is helping us to answer 16,000 calls and to still be there for children who need us.” “We are proud to once again partner with the NSPCC to protect vulnerable across the UK and we are delighted that our donation will help to answer an

this politeness is our innate desire to save others from social embarrassment. We see it as our responsibility to do everything we can to avoid someone else feeling awkward. We are self-effacing and can be ludicrously over polite, unlike brash Americans and rash, headstrong Europeans. (Ok, I’m generalising here) This can lead us into awkward situations from which it can be tricky to extricate ourselves. We’re too courteous to say, ‘no thanks.’

That is until now. Post Corona, that cannot happen. We’re going to have to become more assertive. Meeting up with people, commuting, exercising together all carry a risk of illness. Everything we used to do will have to be considered - is it worth it? Meeting up with colleagues or certain friends who do nothing but moan, complain and be negative without asking about your life - surely this will become a thing of the past? Think of all the time we’ve wasted on doing the right thing. “I don’t want to go, but I feel I have to,” will be a thing of the past. We now have the perfect excuse to pare our social circle right back to those most important to us. We get to cull those we kept seeing out of politeness. I’ve no doubts I will be culled too - It’s going to be a revelation! A year from now I believe there may be great lockdown nostalgia. It will strike people when they are on their way home from a delayed flight, or driving up the M2 from Belfast stuck in a five mile jam, having just endured a lengthy, unnecessary meeting with boring people they were incapable of saying no to. We will look back on this time (if we’re not a nurse, or a carer, or a Next delivery driver, or worse - not here!) as a kind of golden

It is being reported that levels of stress and depression have increased dramatically during this crisis for frontline workers, especially medical staff. Not surprising: we are not all in this together — some bear a far greater burden. I think the levels of stress and depression among the rest of us may have markedly decreased. The responses to that poll suggest that normal life wasn’t very good for us after all, nor that attractive — and only a minority want it all back. For now, as I see lockdown (very) slowly slipping away - take care for I will miss you when you’re gone.

ith a huge shortage of PPE available for health care staff, many people across Northern Ireland have taken the situation into their own hands to help protect NHS staff. One of those volunteering their time is Fashion Design and Technology graduate Niamh Clarke, who has offered her sewing skills for those in her local community. Niamh, who is 25 and from Magherafelt, said she was concerned about the lack of equipment and saw this as an opportunity to lend her very fitting experience with fashion design. “I felt compelled to help because of how hard our nurses, doctors, carers are working and with such a lack of PPE it was the least I could do” said Niamh.

Niamh had come across a Facebook post from NI Scrubs Magherafelt, calling for local people with access to sewing machines to assist in the making of both scrubs and face masks. The group uses recycled materials such as bedsheets, pillowcases, elastic and thread which were donated by local companies and bought from donations the group had received. “At the moment I am on furlough and sewing scrubs was a great way to fill days and keep busy” said Niamh. ‘”There were many women and men in our group of all ages and circumstances, many older people who could sew and were isolating for weeks alone were sewing and cutting too. There was a great sense of community and a collective effort in making these scrubs for our local health care workers”. “In total I made 10 pairs of scrubs and cut out patterns for another five. For me, it would take about a day to sew a full set - top and bottom. Local care homes and hospitals ordered scrubs, this way we could make correct sizes for the workers”. And, of course, the group’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. Receiving messages of appreciation, Niamh tells us: “I’ve had many nurses and carers reach out to me personally and thank me for the work we were doing, a scrub and PPE shortage is something that they shouldn’t have to worry about so to help in some way was great”. ESTHER – CHANGING THE LOCAL CHARITY LANDSCAPE THROUGH TECH Everyone has given to charity at one stage or another in their lives, but have you ever been able to say you know exactly where those funds are going to?

E

By Niamh Campbell

STHER is a new peer-to-peer giving app, which allows someone in need to be connected anonymously with someone

living nearby them who wants to help. Founded by local women, Carol Rossborough and Ailis McCaul in 2018, the name itself is rooted in female empowerment and comes from the name Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility (which is what Easter was originally the celebration of). Carol explained: “When you give women money, they change their families, which changes communities, which changes entire nations. The UN has a lot of established research into what happens when you financially empower women. “Women are raising the future of the world and they should have enough money to survive, but also thrive.” Carol originally had the idea for ESTHER, having noticed the increase in the lack of trust towards charities, yet also the increase in need from people living in poverty. This feeling of trust is a strong theme within the platform. A relationship can be built between the donor and the recipient, who will have an anonymous profile set up with honest updates each month so that the donor can see how their money has helped that person, whether it is a young mother, a homeless rough sleeper or a destitute asylum seeker. Within NI, ESTHER is currently working with charity partners around Belfast, from food banks to community organisations who know which areas are the most deprived and who is in need. The tech-for-good start-up already has plans to expand further afield, but with the Covid-19 pandemic hitting hard, the team is focused mainly on its ‘Empowering Mothers’ programme in the capital city. Carol explained: “As a donor you can support a young family directly and with dignity. A lot of these mothers would have been working community jobs such as cleaning or child-minding, and their kids would have been getting free school meals, 108 | Local Women Magazine

so with lockdown now they’re struggling. Your donation can go directly into that family’s hands which is really empowering because they get to choose how to spend that money.”

the best of our ability for the recipient.”

One charity worker told Carol that a Belfast mother who had been receiving money via ESTHER was finally able to have her living room painted, which boosted her mental health and self-esteem, and with continued funds she will be able to buy a new bed for her son next month, who currently sleeps beside her.

sat, and had a drink and said he really felt like he

Once registered through one of ESTHER’s charity partners, the recipient will receive a prepaid Mastercard, onto which the donations are topped up monthly. Carol added: “The fintech part of this is that we’re able to switch off high risk merchants, such as off licenses or online gambling, but it leaves open a vast majority of purchasing options for people in need. For example, if a young mum is finding it hard to make ends meet, she could maybe buy clothes, basic groceries or even a trampoline for her kids out the back in lockdown. It means that those donations are safeguarded to

Carol commented that this sense of trust and connection has received widespread positive feedback, from both donors and recipients, with people in their own city wanted to help them. Carol continued: “One of the guys on the homeless programme had been on the streets for a long time and only wore hand-me-down clothes. He was able to now go to Primark, buy new jeans and he then walked into a coffee shop, was part of society.” She concluded, “One of the silver linings of Covid-19 is that it’s an absolutely tragic disease but it has made people want to come together and help each other, and a real sense of community has emerged. “Money

problems,

communities do.” Sign up to be an ESTHER donor by visiting https://app.esther.org.uk/programmes/1

Make it as enjoyable as possible and it will keep the momentum going, and literally help you get out of bed every morning. It is a great practice to develop as a family. I use it with my 5 year old daughter before she goes to sleep as a really nice way to end the day. She loves it and often is the one to remind me about doing it! It just comes very naturally to children and is a beautiful habit to teach them. You have absolutely nothing to lose in applying this practice. Commit to the process daily for at least 30 days. Let me know how you get on with it. I love hearing stories from clients of how it has transformed their lives in all sorts of ways. There are many variations of how to apply gratitude. I have recently set up a Girlie Gratitude Group. It is at 6-6.45am on a Monday morning on Zoom. The reason for this time is that it keeps us accountable to our morning practice, and set us up in the right vibration for the rest of the week. The energy of these likeminded women coming together has been incredible and my aim is to create a community for these women to feel supported and uplifted as they begin their week. I am passionate about creating spaces where women support women. This group grew out of the Mindset for Mums group I hosted on Zoom during lockdown. However, the group is open to all women, aged 18 and over. I also include some short visualisation, meditation or mindfulness as part of the session, as well as some discussion. Another benefit of the group is that it keeps each of us on track with goals that we may be in pursuit of, and the group offers positive support throughout the week through our messenger group. The women in the group have already been sharing amazing results from applying the practice. I am very excited to watch it evolve. We now have 25 members in the group, but I have space for more. So if it is something you think you would be interested in , please get in touch. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Love & abundance,

GETTING BACK ON TRACK

Hello to all my readers this month, How refreshing it is to be back in GASP with all my wonderful staff, our doors are open to the public and it is aweinspiring to see our customers arriving daily. As you all know, and previously discussed in my column last month, I have all the necessary guidelines put in place for your absolute safety while visiting us here in-store at Gasp, so please feel free to contact me to make an appointment for mother/ groom of the bride, and for all occasional wear viewing if you would like to make your personal shopping a more first-hand experience we are here at your service with safety.

After months of comfort dressing and working from home during covid lockdown I found it difficult to go back into my wardrobe and dress accordingly for the reopening of Gasp, those comfy leggings and baggy t-shirts were most certainly not on the hanger in my wardrobe for out of house wear and to be honest, I was nervous trying back on some of my finest pieces now that I feel I have gained a few extra pounds due to comfort eating and having enough extra pasta and spaghetti in my cupboards to feed a small village didn’t help when it came to cooking a quick snack, carbs upon carbs , yes no wonder I am relieved to get back to a bit of daily routine

and normality.

People working from home, exercising at home, dining in on delivery services and being entertained by streamed TV are trends we have all experienced in the last few months and while I have been selling a lot of smart casuals comfy wear on my online shop and instore I did not predict the shift would be so extreme but thankfully I have the stock to cover the demand. I have been very cautious this season when buying for next season as I believe we all need more versatility, Pieces that can be worn for multiple things are going to be a more rewarding purchase for my

customers, maybe it’s a top you can go food shopping in but you can also wear it out.”Items with longevity and excellent quality with that comfort seal I think will take over because I feel now living in these unprecedented times means that people re-evaluate what is an important piece of clothing and how they spend their money. After finding comfort in loungewear at home, could we look towards it in the long term? Or will we go to the other extreme and dress up more than we ever have before? Will our priorities shift, As the way, we live our lives adjusts to a new normal, how will our wardrobes change. A comfort-focused style of dressing does not mean the end of people wanting to look nice. I’ve noticed sales increases in above the waist items such as earrings, necklaces and smart blouses and shirting, for instance. “you can still look good while being comfortable “I think this will play a big part in how we all dress moving forward.” However, I have noticed since the lockdown has eased, my customers still want to get very dressed up again suggesting a hunger for special pieces for evenings out and that all-important occasion they may still have coming up as restrictions have greatly eased. I think party dressing and Christmas is going to be really big this year. So I guess I am happy to have covered all aspects of my buying for Gasp and have maintained a collection for everybody’s needs not only for this season but the next. I just love to see people coming into the boutique and treating themselves. But some people just don’t have the finances. But more importantly, it’s about the fear, even if people are desperate to get dressed up and go out, they might be too nervous about the risk of contracting or transmitting Covid-19 to do so, that’s why I have put extreme safety sanitising measures in place in Gasp Boutique, and to ease the pocket burden I also have a MASSIVE SUMMER SALE on all stock items, have no doubt you will most definitely grab a worthy bargain during your visit. For those of you cant get into us here at Gasp please don’t forget my online store that only recently I have managed along with the help of my family to finally get up and running to your satisfaction, it is easy to manage and you can scroll through all your favourite brands and items with the click of a finger, keep an eye on our daily special reductions, offers and new pieces still arriving daily in-store, and sign up for our monthly newsletter. You can log onto www.gaspboutique.com to view my collections and shop with ease. Until next Month

Pam McAlister of therapy:style, a popular fashion boutique, has been a successful business owner in Bushmills for 18 years and like many other small business owners found the effect of the lockdown very challenging. She quickly adapted by introducing a complete rebrand, launched a new website, given her boutique a face lift and has focused on her social media following. Recognising her customers would expect all the ‘on-trend’ styles in store she also worked closely with the exclusive labels that she features to ensure that she is stocked with a stunning selection. Gallery 1608 is Northern Irelands largest gallery and as many of our clients have said, “A destination in itself”. The gallery represents around 150 artists, working in all mediums including painters, sculptors, jewellers, woodworkers, and glass artists. Many of Irelands top names are represented as well as up and coming artists who we believe will be the most desired artists of the future. The artists we represent suit all client budgets and all tastes are also catered for. During lockdown we continued to work hard to ensure art enthusiasts could still satisfy their needs. A new website was launched which now allows clients to buy on line, with free shipping available to the UK and Ireland. www.gallery1608.co.uk No matter how good photographs are, the intricacies of many pieces of art often need to be seen in the flesh, and now we are open again, this is possible. We have put special measure in place so that both our staff and clients can feel safe in the gallery. Hand sanitisers are provided and clients will be asked to wear gloves, which we will provide, if they need to handle works such as sculptures. For those who are still slightly wary of going into shops, we can also arrange private evening viewings by prior appointment. We look forward to welcoming everyone back and seeing new clients to view new works which artists have been producing during their own lockdown period.

SHOP LOCAL The message from this innovative collective is clear. Shop local, support local and help these small businesses continue to support local jobs and their own families to recover from this extraordinary crisis. Bushmills village is diverse in its offering but what is common amongst all the businesses is the friendly service and a passion for what they do which makes Bushmills a must stop destination for locals and visitors. Now that restaurants and café are planning their reopening, a dander up and down the streets of Bushmills comes highly recommended.

Our offices are open to provide legal advice and assistance to existing and new clients. FAMILY LAW

Rachel Rice LL.B., Solicitor rrice@solicitorsni.net There is no doubt that the announcement of lockdown has presented challenges in many areas of family law. Much concern was expressed about the fact that restrictions on movement might mean that victims of domestic abuse were forced to remain at home potentially with their abuser. We would remind anyone in this situation that there exist helplines and support which include a 24 hour Domestic & Sexual Abuse helpline affiliated with Women’s Aid and Nexus and can be reached on 08088021414. It is important to note that the household isolation instruction as a result of Coronavirus DOES NOT apply if you need to leave your home to escape domestic abuse. It is important to remember that domestic abuse does not always need to extend to physical violence it can also include coercive control, ‘gas-lighting’, economic abuse, online abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse.

EMPLOYMENT LAW

Rosemary Connolly LL.B. L.L.M. rosemaryconnolly@solicitorsni.net Leanne McKeown LL.B., Solicitor leannemckeown@solicitorsni.net It is fair to say that a lot has happened in the field of employment law since the beginning of lockdown. A new term “furlough” entered the lexicon. It was not a term that employment lawyers had been aware of before this but we are certainly familiar with it now! Many of the readers of this magazine will either be SME employers who have availed of the Scheme to allow them to retain in employment employees who might otherwise have been vulnerable to being made redundant. Other readers will be employees who are themselves on furlough. As the Scheme has progressed it has evolved and we are now at a stage when flexible furlough is being permitted which allows employees to work perhaps Obviously if anyone is in immediate danger the appropriate response is to call 999 and ask for the Police who continue to respond to emergency calls. It is also useful to note the number of the National Domestic Abuse helpline 0808 2000 247. Women’s Aid provide a range of direct services for survivors of domestic abuse they can be contacted locally on 02830250765 (Armagh Down) or the main office on 02890249041. We remain open and available to clients who may be in this unfortunate position. Should anyone require advice in this or in any other family law matter please contact Rachel Rice at rachelrice@solicitorsni.net or 028 4175 3121. Issues have also emerged around nonfacilitation of contact arrangements and this has proved challenging to partners who have been denied contact with their children at this most difficult time. Again, if you have been affected by an issue of this nature please contact us we would be glad to help.

on a part-time basis whilst the employer can still make a claim for the remainder of the persons normal working hours under the Scheme. For a great many employers and employees this has provided a much needed lifeline in difficult and challenging circumstances.

However, challenges will present in the run up to the ending of the Scheme in its entirety. It is important that if employers are intending to either reduce hours and/or consider making persons redundant that a fair and objective process is followed with appropriate consultation and notification. Our employment law team are on hand to provide advice and guidance in relation to these matters. HOUSE TRANSACTIONS IN A PANDEMIC Emma Matthews LL.B, Solicitor emmamatthews@solicitorsni.net When lockdown was first announced it became clear that the housing market and specifically the transfer of property was going to be substantially impacted and that proved to be the case.

Initially Government Regulations specifically prohibited house viewings etc and therefore much of the domestic residential conveyancing market was unable to function. Happily things have moved on considerably and with effect from Monday 15th June 2020 the property market has pronounced itself open for business and certainly at Rosemary Connolly Solicitors we are seeing a marked upturn in the number of transactions being notified. We are on hand and available to deal with your needs in respect of buying or selling property. Please contact Emma on emmamatthews@ solicitorsni.net or 028 41753121.

H

ey everyone! I’m back for another edition of Local Women magazine. Thank you to all the readers who sent me a kind comment about my last piece. It made me feel happy! It was weird at the start seeing my name on a magazine in shops.

Sadly, Lockdown is still happening- we are in the 17th week Happily, NO MORE SCHOOL WORK!! I think everybody in the house is happy about that!

SETANTA CLUB OIGE

Every week before Lockdown, I went to a club for all of the Irish Schools in Derry. I hung out with my friends at the club and played Dodgeball and Tip. I made friends with peeps from other schools and I speak Irish there. I miss the club loads and was so happy and shocked when they came to our door with a fun pack for me and Lorcan! Go raibh maith agaibh, Club Oige Setanta!

This month, I will tell you more about things I love and have made during Lockdown.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Nana Mary, who is going to turn 70 on 4th July! I hope that she has a great day and I can’t wait to see her!

MY FAVOURITE APPS FOR KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH FRIENDS 122 | Local Women Magazine

My fruit and veg are growing fast, especially my strawberries We had to cut the herbs as they started to flower and that makes the leaves bitter. The tomatoes are growing, but the tomato elf hasn’t came to paint them red yet. My brothers believe that, as they watched it on a cartoon called, ‘Simon’ I cant wait to eat the tomatoes when they are red!

Derry Turnovers

This is a really easy recipe, because it only has 4 ingredients.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Shop bought puff pastry One egg Icing sugar Jam

First, you cut the pastry into 6 squares.

Next, fold the 2 opposite corners.

Whisk the egg and use a pastry brush to dab some egg onto these corners to glue them down.

Get a teaspoon and put a spoonful of jam in the centre.

Put the turnovers on trays with greaseproof paper and then coat the turnovers with egg.

Place the trays into a pre heated fan oven at 190degrees.

Some people love their turnovers burned, or more brown, but I love them baked for about 15mins so they are just a wee bit brown.

Leave them to cool for a wee while, and then mix some icing sugar with a tiny bit of water and drizzle all over over the turnovers.

Delicious

TOP TIP WHY NO T TRY DIFFERE NT FLAVOU RS OF JAMS?

This is my idea of a perfect Derry breakfast!

Barbie Dolls During Lockdown, I have become obsessed with Barbies! In June, I bought 6 new barbies from my Birthday money. My favourite Barbies are in the Fashionista range. I love them because they are not the typical Barbies. Instead, they show how different people from all around the world can look and I think that they are all beautiful the way they are. I am obsessed with their different looks. I love how some are taller, some are curvier, some of the boys have long hair and ginger hair. There is a Barbie in a wheelchair, and one with a prosthetic leg. There is a Barbie with different skin tones, (my Mummy told me that she has a condition called ‘Vitiligo’), and girls with shaved heads and mohawks. They are so cool! I love the Barbie with the bald head and the Barbie with Vitiligo the most.

Dyslexic Language

L

ast month, I promised you that I’d write you a bit in my Dyslexic language. I’m a little embarrassed, but hey, it will be okay.

Now I’m in dyislisic mode. Yestrueday day was a butiful day outside so my mummy put the basit ball net out . Me and my brother tried to score for deffrit nombers and then we had to try trowen it in bakewords and I won. For diner we had Mc donllias as a treat for getting a good scool report. I got a chicin bugrer and my brothers got chicin nugtis. I cant wat intil they put chicin wraeps and milkshaeks bak on the maenyou.

atching You Tube is one of my favourite things to do during Lockdown on rainy days. Here are some of my favourite You Tubers:

COLLINS KEY: He is an American Youtuber, who makes videos about art, transforms his house, makes art out of candy and pancakes. He is very funny and crazy, and he makes me laugh. Sometimes his wee brother Deven does challenges with him. He is an amazing artist, better than Collins, but that doesn’t stop Collins from trying and tells his subscribers to never give up on what they love doing. ADAM B: Adam is a local Youtuber who lives in Derry. He makes challenge videos and plays pranks on his Mum, Dad and brother, Callum. He is really funny and is also very kind. You probably seen him on the news this month as he bought his Mummy and Daddy a brandnew house. In his new video, he drives around Derry in a black ice cream van and gives out presents to people who have struggled during Lockdown. He drove past my street and waved to me and I obviously cried my eyes out!

Tie Dye

Another thing I am obsessed with at the minute is Tie Dye! Yah! I got a set for Christmas, so I decided to tie dye a white jacket that I had, and I let my little brothers design tie dye vests with me too. I asked my Mummy could I do my Holy Communion dress and she nearly had a heart attack! Okay, so it’s a little bit messy to do, so make sure you wear gloves and do it somewhere sensible. My Daddy said that he seen the dye on Ebay if you want to try this yourself. All you have to do is get a white tshirt, or whatever you want, scrunch it up into a ball and put elastic bands around it. My kit came with all different ways to make different patterns, but I like to freestyle. Once you are finished, leave it for 8 hours and then run the cold tap over it until all the extra dye has ran out of it. WARNING! Wash it by itself for 3 washes before putting it in with other stuff.

JAMES CHARLES: James is an American Makeup Artist. He does makeup tutorials, sometimes with a twist. He has millions of subscribers and fans send him in reaction videos of how they copy his makeup. I like watching James Charles because he is funny and is a great makeup artist. I like practising putting on makeup when I watch him.

Coconut Macaroons

So, me and my Mummy love macaroons and always buy them at the market in Derry. They are so good! Obviously, we have been missing the market, so we decided to make them ourselves. These are really easy to make. You need:

Ingredients: • 400g desiccated coconut • 1 can of condensed milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 egg whites • ¼ tsp salt

TOP TIP DIP THEM IN CHOCOLATE! YUMMY IN MY TUMMY!

Method Pre heat the oven to 160 degrees Line the trays with greaseproof paper In a bowl, mix together the coconut, condensed milk and vanilla extract In another bowl, whisk the egg whites and salt together until they are stiff and don’t fall out when you tip the bowl upside down Add the egg white mix to the coconut mix and fold in. Don’t stir it all crazy, just gently mix it in. Use an ice cream scoop to make the ball shape and place on the trays. Bake them for around 25-35 minutes until they are as brown as you like them Leave to cool on racks and then…amazing! Crunchy outside and then so yummy and chewy inside! Eat 2 or 3 before your mummy tells you to stop

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW DOT MICRO IS A MULTI AWARD WINNING COMPANY THAT PROVIDES A FANTASTIC HAIR LOSS SOLUTION CALLED SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION. The clinic based in Holywood, County Down provides a non-medical hair loss solution. Scalp micropigmentation can be used to treat hereditary hair loss, and other forms of Alopecia and can even camouflage scars on the scalp.

My only regret is that I didn’t have it done sooner.” Don Allen

One of our valued clients

SO HOW DOES SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION WORK? Tiny flecks of ink are applied to the top layer of skin. These super tiny dots resemble shaved hair follicles or can look like the base of hair follicles under thinning hair. Mark Smith, the global multi award winning scalp micropigmentation artist can basically make thin hair look more

dense or can a give a bald guy back what actually looks like a full head of hair but shaved. It’s amazing. The great thing about scalp micropigmentation is that the results are almost immediate and can last many years before requiring a top up treatment.

WHAT CAN SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION BE USED TO TREAT? Scalp micropigmentation is also known as SMP or a hair tattoo. The treatment’s popularity is huge in the US and other parts of the world and now becoming a popular choice as a hair loss solution in Northern Ireland. SMP has many uses. It’s most common use is for men who have severe hair loss. However, It’s equally effective for giving the appearance of more density in thinning hair and so a

great option to men and women alike suffering from various forms of alopecia.

AFTER

In addition, it’s commonly used to camouflage scars on the scalp. These could be either small scars from minor injuries to large medical scars. The clinic offer free consultations with various treatment special offers on through winter and spring.

“I haven’t ironed since 1967 and I’m not likely to start now.” As lockdown ends, Local Women columnist Myra Dryden reflects on how little she got done in so much time – just don’t mention that laundry pile! By Myra Dryden drydenmyra@gmail.com

I

spied that sign hanging on the entrance door to a greasy spoon café in America, a few years ago. We were filling up with gas at a popular trucker stop in Philadelphia at the time, and through the diner window we could see big beefy men digging in to their daily helping of cholesterol; the latter being the reason, I presume, for the humorous apology.

which realised it was probably too soon to do so. And I am determined not to mention the criminal involvement of Trump or Johnston (or as I call him, Garden Shears) in the whole sorry debacle. Instead, I am going to focus on some more positive news: Infection and death rates are going down and lockdown is easing; easing to the point of allowing hairdressers to open up. I have already made an appointment and will be in the first wave across the doorstep; and I’ll say this and no more on the subject: I am sick of people telling me that my hair looks fine when it (*swear word ) doesn’t. All their asinine platitudes serve to do is to remind me of that heartfelt moment in Playboy of the Western World when Christy Mahon declares to Pegeen Mike, “Well, they’re bloody liars in the parish where I grew a man!” ‘nough said.

Such a sign during this deadly pandemic would I have to admit that I am very disappointed not be a laughing matter, but a serious apology with how little I have done over the last 12 on behalf of the commercial establishment it weeks. I was sure by now my house would be graced, whether in America or England, and gleaming, like any normal woman’s would with so much time to spare; but it was not to be. Snail’s pace would be over-exaggerating the speed I went at. Oh, I dusted here and there on a couple of occasions, vacuumed a room or two the next week, stripped beds then left them naked for days after and managed to wash the kitchen floor and two bathroom floors once. With the weather being so good I was more successful with the washing: every throw in the house, every cushion cover and all the bathroom mats; enjoying putting it out on the line and watching it flapping

in the cool breeze, almost poetic. The trouble was that I never got around to putting it away, so it just kept on piling up in the laundry with me simply pulling things out as I needed them. When the oil man came and caught a glimpse of the jumble through the laundry door he remarked as I let him out of the gate, “God, mrs, yee’ve a fair owl load a ironin’ there!” He was very quick on his feet, so I don’t think he heard my reply. “I haven’t ironed since 1967 and I’m not likely to start now.” Just as well. He was a frail wee critter and I wouldn’t have wanted him to have a heart attack. It’s a standing joke among my children that if their father gave me an iron for Christmas, he’d be wearing it for Boxing Day. Well, the wrinkled items are all safely stored again and it’s time now to think about sorting my books out. I really miss Patricia for help in that area even though she was always telling me off for stopping to delve into novels I hadn’t seen for a long time. And no way would she have Beckett rubbing shoulders with Catherine Cookson. Actually, I think she would rather he wasn’t on the shelves at all. But I love him, so he is staying; him and that mother character who used to greet her son with, “Nice to smell you.” She was blind, of course. You’d imagine with so many books of my own that I would not miss the library, but I do. I still love to browse around, not knowing what literary gem I’ll hit upon. That was how I found Maureen Lee and Anna Jacobs, both of

whose work I could never tire of. And I love the look of a library book, with its well-worn plastic cover, testimony to the number of previous satisfied readers. I like to see people with their heads stuck into a good borrowed volume; I feel I have a bond with them, as if we belong to the same club, the serious readers club. I hope the government allows us to browse again soon.

and love: The Bobbsy Twins, the Secret Seven, The Famous Five; and later, those wonderful boarding schools: St Care’s, Malory Towers, The Chalet School, where I joined in the midnight feasts in the dorm, and was hugged warmly by dear ‘Mam’zelle’ who so adored her little charges.

The only fly in the ointment during those Of course I’ve been a serious reader all my happiness filled days was the presence at life (as I think you may have guessed over the stamping table of those dour, miserable assistants who begrudged us Catholic children (And make no mistake, they knew we were Catholic the same way we knew they were Protestants) those badly needed hours away from Sloanes Terrace, Bishop Street, The Folley, Lecky Road and the rest; those late night hours when a little candle, set on a tin lid beside the bed, lighted our way into more pleasant lives, where fathers had full time work, mothers provided sumptuous teas, holidays were spent in the country with grandparents, and Christmas was fun filled with loads of presents under the beautiful tree. the years), especially since that magical day There now, wasn’t that grand. But I miss my father marched me up to Brook Park and other things besides the library: Charity shops ‘joined’ me in the library there, realising that he with their air of serendipity, a cup of coffee couldn’t keep up to affording new material for and a laugh with Catherine in The Sandwich me to devour. What a day that was! I thought Company, a cup of tea and more laughter I was in heaven. A whole room filled with with Bernie in Java (my favourite café), and adventures and characters I was about to meet of course my Friday nights with Patricia; but

when will those days come again? Even when they do, will we have to book a ticket for a seat in a café? And shame on me, I haven’t even mentioned getting back to Church! One thing I have been really happy about this past week is the coming and going of the longest day. From now on the days will get shorter and my favourite time of year is on its way again; curtains closed, fires lit, lights on. Well, you’ve heard it all before. With any luck this may be the last time you hear it. A little joke from my grandson Jack to close: A man goes into a barber shop with a monkey on his back. The barber asks, “Where did you get that?” The monkey replies, “I found it on the street.” Well, we thought it was funny, but then we are all related to him by blood. Stay safe.
