‘SPRING’ ON THE NEW YOU TREATMENT
AT THE AWARD WINNING YOUNIQUE AESTHETICS CLINIC
Tribella – The 3 in 1 Total Facial Treatment. Since we introduced Tribella to our clinics in Newry and Belfast we can’t keep up with the demand - our clients simply can’t get enough of it. Tribella combines IPL, radio frequency and nano fractional laser all in one treatment making it one of the best anti-aging treatments to date. Although amazing together, these three treatments can be performed as single treatments. IPL will treat thread veins/pigmentation and overall discolouration of the skin. Radio Frequency will erase fine lines, reduce wrinkles and firm the skin. Nano Fractional RF will smooth out the skin texture and scars and enlarged pores will soften. It resurfaces the skin leaving it brighter and tighter. One session gives the results of four sessions of microneedling at a fraction of the cost.
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Obagi Professional – C Microdermabrasion Polish and Mask
Introducing an exciting new product from the Obagi Medical range. This is a dual action polish and mask that contains an unprecedented level of 30% L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to unveil dramatically brighter, smoother, more youthful looking skin. This 2 in 1 polisher and mask is ideal for lacklustre looking skin. It is recommended to be used twice a week, leaving it on for approximately 10-15 minutes. It is definitely a new firm favourite here in the clinic!
OUT & ABOUT Miss Northern Ireland Launch
MEET THE TEAM INTRODUCING OUR CLINIC COORDINATOR EMMANUEL
WHO IS YOUR HERO? Barbara Streisand, her talent on many levels is exceptional. She is viewed by some to be not beautiful, but I find her absolutely stunning and a champion of women’s equality. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR CAREER? I love being in my early fifties and I am passionate about my skincare. Many people believe that as we get older skincare fades down the list of priorities. Well, not in my world. I love talking about the skincare we offer and treatments that really work. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? I love the Harry Potter movies and also The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I love to sing and write my own songs and record them. I am also involved in various choirs. I teach dance and drama in after schools. I love the Arts. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR? Regret - not taking every opportunity that gets presented to you. I am a big believer that we must strive to live life to the full.
As one of the sponsors of Miss Northern Ireland 2020 the Younique Team were delighted to attend the launch of this year’s event held in the Observatory Bar at the Grand Hotel, Belfast, alongside Alison Campbell from ACA Models and the current Miss Northern Ireland, Lauren Leckey. This fabulous event was hosted by Zoe Salmon Corrie and James McGinn, the hospitality was provided by Schweppes and a great evening was had by all. We are very much looking forward to judging our own home grown talent here at the local heat in Newry, at Ginger Jane’s on Thursday, March 5, 2020 and the subsequent finals which are to be held in the Europa Hotel later in year.
Tribella FAQ’S WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME WITH THE TRIBELLA TREATMENT? The downtime varies from person to person but in general it is usually between 24-48 hours. HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE? Tribella combines three different treatments in one session. The treatment therefore takes 1 hour and 30 minutes approximately. HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED? For maximum results three sessions are recommended over a three month period, however great results can be seen after just one treatment. HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM SUITABLE FOR THE TRIBELLA TREATMENT? Here at the clinic we offer complimentary skin consultations so our skin therapists will analyse your skin and if suitable you will have a patch test before having the treatment.
THREE ITEMS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? My morning latte, my skincare regime, and a taxi home at the end of the working day. WHAT IS YOUR MUST HAVE SKINCARE PRODUCTS? My Ever Active C & E serum from Alumier MD and Simply Clean Gel Wash from SkinCeuticals. I love my skin to feel super clean and looking radiant. WHAT IS FAVOURITE PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT? I really am impressed with the NanoFractional procedure – it’s like microneedling, only much more effective, the results are phenomenal. FAVOURITE COCKTAIL? Expresso Martini, hands down! I love my coffee fix!
TRENDING WITH TRINNY
The new Tribella treatment has been very much in demand since TV celebrity Trinny Woodall has been praising the benefits of it and how her skin has been glowing. It also received a 10/10 review in the Sunday Times Style Magazine.

FIGHT OF

Northern Ireland’s only professional boxer Cathy McAleer tells Local Women how learning to fight against the school bullies led her on her winning path.

athy McAleer’s mouth is numb and, frustratingly, she can’t talk - but, thankfully, it’s nothing to do with boxing. She’s just been to the dentist to have a tooth extracted, jokingly describing the experience as “much worse” than being in the ring. Always ready to fight her corner, the petite Belfast boxer is on bouncing form these days, after winning her fourth professional fight in Birmingham last month. The 41 year-old bantamweight defeated Bulgaria’s Teodora Hristova at Aston Villa Football Club’s Holte Suite and believes, with the help of new manager, Kellie Maloney, she is now well on her way to winning another world title. It’s certainly not an unreachable goal for the gutsy owner of MAC FIT and Beauty in Belfast, having already conquered the worlds of karate questioning her decision to box to the top. and kickboxing: she is a former world champion

She made a sensational debut in 2018, winning February with an “electric crowd of support”, and all three professional bouts – and becoming although feeling nervous at the start, in case she let the first woman to fight at the Ulster Hall in 18 Kellie, John and her entire Northern Ireland fan base years in the process - but, after cancellations and down, she needn’t have worried. “When I walked promoters letting her down, she found herself out, the crowd lifted the roof and I totally loved ƒ Cathy and Kellie

She is quick-witted and authoritative, An interest in make-up is something Cathy now but there is a gentleness and empathy there too, shares with new promoter and manager, Kellie, alongside a genuine respect for people – whether formerly Frank Maloney, the renowned boxing inside or outside the ring. Focus and determination are never in question – she worked as a general manager for the former Virgin Active gym in Holywood before opening the MAC brand – but she hates to think she might actually hurt anyone in the name of sport. “I have respect for the other person, so I’d be the first over, checking they are okay,” she confides. “People think boxing is about aggression, but it’s about two skilled people in the ring, doing a sport they are passionate about. It’s about being smart, tactical and only moving when the time is right. If you’re aggressive, you’ll burn out and never last the rounds. A smarter fighter tends to be the one who wins.” Cathy has always played ‘smart’, whether wheedling her primary school PE teacher for a chance to play on the boys’ football team (he gave in eventually and let her join the boys-only team at St Michael’s PS on the Ravenhill Road) or working her way up to management level after joining Virgin Active as receptionist, following a degree in Sports Marketing at the University of Stirling, Scotland. A “very shy and timid child” at school, she first turned to karate after being beaten up for “wearing the wrong uniform in the wrong park” as a wide-eyed eight year-old. It was a traumatic experience which left its mark, literally (half her hair “was missing” afterwards) and has made her even more passionate about helping young people in her karate school to fight back against the bullies in 2020. “After that incident, my wee brother went to karate lessons and I wanted to go too, but my dad – who is very ‘old school’ – initially said, ‘Girls don’t fight,’” she says. “I was always very sporty, although my mum tried to get me into tap dancing with my sisters, but it didn’t work out. Then, three weeks later, she phoned to invite me to the awards and to say ‘Our journey begins...’ Today, while Cathy is embracing the challenge of another world sporting title, she is also quietly helping children and adults achieve goals of their own.

tarting a new job is an exciting and nerve-wracking experience as you embark on a new chapter in your life. But for Mia Weimer, it signalled the beginning of a terrifying fight for survival after she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at just 23-years-old. Incredibly, Mia regards her diagnosis last October as a stroke of luck, as it only happened after she attended a health check offered by her new employer. And as a result of finding out she had Hodgkin lymphoma, Mia underwent a series of scans which discovered she also

Prior to her health check, Mia, who lives in west Belfast, says she was just an ordinary young girl who enjoyed writing a beauty blog where she shared tips and pictures of make-up.
“I started a new job and went along to a health check where they looked at things like my BMI and my heart rate and it was a lot higher than it should be.
She had been feeling a little under the weather, but didn’t suspect she was so unwell.

While Lynsey is now mum to eight-year-old twin girls Sophia and Scarlett, Leah took a different route to motherhood, going it alone to adopt a little girl from Thailand. And that, says Leah, is her proudest achievement. “Much has happened since we first opened the doors of the Secret Day Spa 11 years ago,” Leah, this month’s Belfast cover girl, says. “The salon is doing really well, the products have been internationally successful and myself and Lynsey have become mums. “I always wanted to be a mum and always knew I was going to go abroad and adopt. CORONAVIRUS AND YOUR WEDDING This month Elsebeth Sayers from Peony Bridal discusses the hot topic of the Coronavirus and it’s possible effect on the industry
You may be reading the title of this article and thinking - well it’s on the other side of the world and wondering why it is a topic for this month’s column. However, if you have a look at each and every garment you are currently wearing you will probably find that part of your outfit is manufactured in China. If it isn’t at the very least the material will have been produced there and shipped to another country for the clothing to be produced. SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR WEDDING ? Well if you are a 2020 bride who hasn’t gotten their dress or maids sorted yet I would recommend you get a wriggle on. Sadly we have had to turn away bridal parties last month who had wedding dates in summer 2020 as production just was not possible, where as in previous years this would not have been a problem, as we could not guarantee

What Women Want
Local Women welcomes Lori Gatsi-Barnett on board as a columnist discussing various women’s matters
H
ello Local Women readers, My name is Lori Gatsi-Barnett and over the coming months I will be discussing a number of different issues affecting women.
is nothing more inspiring than knowing your purpose and waking up everyday to live it out.
First let me tell you a little bit about myself and what I do.
It’s not about unrealistic expectations, it’s about honesty - accepting that some you win and sometimes you could lose it all. However, just because everything doesn’t turn out the way you want it certainly doesn’t spell disaster, it’s an opportunity to start over and make it work for yourself.
I’ve learnt being a grown up takes some responsibility, resilience and mostly self belief when all else fails.
I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, the eldest and the only girl alongside my three brothers. I lived and studied in the Pennsylvania US and I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world and experience diversity in many forms. Having lived in London initially, I ‘blew in’ to Belfast, and now 14 years later I am a business owner of L’Esense Group Ltd, a social entrepreneur, motivational speaker and founder of the JoinHer Network. I am also the very proud Mama to my 14-year old, Arianna. Diversity has always been a part of my life from an early age, primarily because of my parents and their professional lives which often included us. JoinHer came about in my bedside journal for years - I suppose waiting for the day I would be convinced to share it and bring it to life.

MUM’S THE WORD! It’s a very special Mother’s Day for new mum Andie Robinson from Larne as she prepares to walk down the aisle after her fiancé enlisted the couple’s newborn twins to help him propose.
B
By Lisa Smyth
ecoming a mum couldn’t have been more of an ordeal for Andie Robinson.
Following the arrival of her twins, Adam and Louise, shortly before Christmas her days were suddenly filled with nappies, feeding schedules and the worry that comes with being a parent. In Andie’s case, the stress was even greater as Adam experienced problems with his breathing and was transferred to the neo natal unit at Antrim Area Hospital shortly after his arrival. So, 24-year-old Andie, from Larne, was faced with splitting her time between her two precious babies and even had to leave Adam behind in hospital when she and Louise were discharged. It was made even worse by the fact that Adam spent his first Christmas in hospital. However, her anguish turned to joy when the twin’s daddy, 23-year-old Allan Reid, proposed during a Christmas Day visit to their newborn son. “I had no idea he was going to do it,” said Andie. The couple met through friends two years ago. Andie continued: “He actually didn’t live far from me, so we did know each other, but we really got together through friends that we both knew. “We went on a date and that was it.” When Andie subsequently found out she was pregnant, the couple were overjoyed. Knowing that twins ran in Allan’s family, she suspected that she may be pregnant with twins. However, this was ruled out at the 12-week scan. Andie, who was working as a classroom assistant at a primary school in Jordanstown at the time, continued: “I went along, and everything was as it should be. 22 | Local Women | News Feature
ƒ The family celebrated their first Christmas at Antrim Area Hospital
“They were wearing vests saying, ‘mummy, will you marry daddy?’ I couldn’t believe it, it was such a surprise – Allan even had a ring picked out and everything.”
“I actually asked if I was having twins because I knew Allan’s family history on his dad’s side, but they told me there was only one. “Then a few weeks later I was asked to attend for another appointment. “I didn’t think anything of it, I just assumed it was another appointment. “I was lying there having a scan done and the doctor said to me, ‘You know you’re having twins, don’t you?’. “I didn’t know what to feel, to be honest, I didn’t know whether to fall off the bed or cry. “I was literally in shock. “I was there on my own because I thought it was just a routine appointment, so they gave me a scan picture to take home. “I texted a picture to Allan and he thought I was winding him up.” The shock began to settle, and Andie got on with enjoying her pregnancy, although she was bothered with sickness throughout. “I was used to it because I hadn’t been well for about five years before, which the doctors put down to irritable bowel syndrome,” she said.
ƒ Andie received a very unique proposal
“We all went in to visit him on Christmas As Adam needed some help with his breathing, he was moved to the neonatal Day and Allan asked me to wait outside for a minute while he dressed the twins and ward after he was born. then one of the nurses came and got me. “Going from having no children to two “When I went in, Adam and Louise were babies was mad, words can’t describe it,” lying together in the cot underneath a said Andie. Christmas blanket. “It was horrible having them split up and “When I pulled it back, they were wearing not being able to be with both of them at vests saying ‘mummy, will you marry daddy?’ the same time.
“Although the morning sickness was “I wanted to stay with Louise, but I about 10 time worse and I did get sent wanted to be with Adam, which meant I home from work. had to leave Louise and ask the nurses on “I kept being sick, but it was fine in the the ward to look after her while I was gone. scheme of things. “They were really brilliant. “Then it turned out one of the babies was “Louise and I got home on December 20, breech and they were talking about doing but Adam had to stay in, which was awful a Caesarean section for a while, which I but the staff in the ward were brilliant didn’t really want. “I managed to get my head around it, I realised that if it had to be a section, that was what would have to happen. “We decided to find out at the 20-week scan what we were having because I wanted to be prepared because we were having twins. “In my head, I wanted one of each because it would mean I wouldn’t have to have anymore, so I was really pleased to find out I was expecting a boy and girl. “My original due date was January 8 but that was brought forward because I was having twins and they said it would be a date between December 18 and 25.” As it turned out, Adam and Louise arrived into the world on December 17, weighing 6lbs and 5lbs respectively.
there too. ƒ Louise and Adam were born just before Christmas
“I couldn’t believe it; it was such a surprise – Allan even had a ring picked out and everything. “It was even the right size, he had gone to such trouble and put so much thought and effort into it, which made it even more special.” So last month Andie celebrated Valentine’s Day not just as a mummy but a bride-to-be. However, her attentions aren’t on wedding planning just yet as her hands are full looking after her babies. “I’m not sure what we’re going to do about the wedding yet, where we’re going to have it or what date it’s going to be on,” she continued. “I’m just so pleased to have the twins home and back together, although when one cries, it sets the other one off too. “I have got lots of support though and they’re feeding well too, which is good. “I think we’ll wait until the twins are up a bit before we have the wedding. “They played such an important part in the proposal that I would like them to be involved in the wedding as well.” Local Women | News Feature | 23

Donna’s Design Inspiration This month award winning interior designer Donna Monteith chats about some of the designs and projects she is working on Hi Everyone, So here we are in March already - it’s hard to believe. I have been very busy designing and working on projects and navy and grey trends still seem to be very popular with my clients. Recently I have used various styles and textures as this colour can be used in both classic and contemporary settings. I have also designed some stunning damask navy and grey curtains in designer fabric by Zinc - they are
showcasing in the studio at present and they really are statement curtains. When they are teamed with accent lamps in navy and white and occasional or dining chairs, they really make an elegant hall, dining space or bedroom! Wallpapers of texture and contrast paint choices are also important and there are many tones of grey that compliment navy. My favourite is Farrow and Ball Manor House grey, their Pavilion grey and even softer again - Cornforth white. For those who like an accent colour - teal, burnt orange, white and metallic silver in the right places would look great. Until next month!

Ashlee-Nicole Funky Hair and Nails, Belfast has won Wedding Hairdresser of the Year for Belfast for the second year running
A
shlee-Nicole Lowe has been described by one of her clients at Ashlee-Nicole Funky Hair and Nails as ‘The absolute queen of all things hair.’ And it’s not just her clients that think Ashlee-Nicole is at the top of her game, as her Woodstock Road, Belfast salon has just won Wedding Hairdresser of the Year for Belfast for the second year running at the prestigious Northern Ireland Hair & Beauty Awards held at the Crowne Plaza. To say Ashlee-Nicole is delighted would be an understatement. “I can’t tell you how delighted I am,” said Ashlee-Nicole. “I couldn’t believe it when I won last year but to win for the second year in a row is just amazing. ‘You have to be nominated by your clients first and then depending on your votes you get shortlisted for the final. Then you have to provide reviews, photographs of weddings you have done and all your supporting evidence. You are then provided with the criteria for two hairstyles they want you to do and then the judges make the final decision. “The first year I won the award I was working from home. I didn’t even know I had been nominated until my friend sent me a screenshot of the finalists and said ‘Ashlee is this you?’ “I couldn’t believe my eyes - it must have been one of the weddings I had done that nominated me. 28 | Local Women | Feature
ƒ The team celebrates their amazing win
ƒ The salon can create the perfect up-styles
“When it came to the awards night I didn’t think I stood a chance. I was up against some of the big names so we went to enjoy being part of the occasion all done up in formal wear. “When it came to my category and they announced my name I started crying. “We made the final this year again and once again there were some really big salons in the final. I was convinced I had no chance of winning and when they called my name out I was just blown away. I’m so humbled that my clients like what I do and nominated me for the awards, it means so much to me.” It will come as no surprise to Ashlee-Nicole’s clients that she is a multi award winner, they constantly sing her praises and talk about how she is talented, friendly, welcoming and goes out of her way to help and accommodate her customers. “I know my work is good but I think it’s my personality that makes me stand out from the others,” said Ashlee-Nicole. “I get on so well with all my clients. “I’m more like a member of the family when I go along to do a wedding, rather than a hairdresser showing up to do a job then leaving. I’ll stay and do everything from help them put on their dress to putting on their veil. I’ll stay until they leave in their cars and if needed I’ll even make tea and coffee for everyone.” Not many of us can say that we are doing a job we truly love, however Ashlee-Nicole can. “I always wanted to be a hairdresser from a very young age. I got good results in my GCSEs but I didn’t want to continue at school, I just wanted to work in hairdressing as soon as I could. “I’ve been a hairdresser for 11 years and I opened my own salon last June. Hairdressing is my passion and I love being my own boss. “No two days are the same - from cuts and colours to extensions, I do it all. Every day is different which I love and I love my clients - they make everyday special and I wouldn’t have won my awards without them”. Ashlee-Nicole may clear more space on her wall as she is up for more awards in the coming year. “I am nominated for the third time at the Northern Ireland Hair & Beauty Awards. I’m delighted but scared at the same time. It’s been my award for two years and I would love to win it again. However, you have to give other people the chance too. My fingers are secretly still crossed we win though,” she joked. “We’ve also found out that we have been shortlisted for the finals of the Great British Hair awards in not two but five categories - how amazing is that!” Local Women | Feature | 29

VITALITY - SPA TREATMENTS IN THE HEART OF EAST BELFAST
Local Women Editor Kim Kelly discovers a wonderful hidden gem at Vitality Beauty Studio, Beersbridge Road. It’s a Tuesday afternoon in February, it’s bucketing with rain and blowing a gale. This is surely the most depressing time of the year – so what better way to lift my spirits than a visit to a spa? I’m a firm believer in self-care. You’ve got to look after yourself – these days life is too busy with work, juggling looking after children and pets, caring for relatives and other family commitments. Burnout is always just around the corner and you need to take time to unwind. So, I am delighted to be introduced to a brand-new beauty studio with spa treatments – right in the heart of East Belfast. Vitality Beauty Studio is situated ƒ Owner of Vitality Natalie Loyal

Added to her experience of Caribbean cruising, Natalie has also worked as a therapist for an exclusive ski chalet group in the French Alps. I know already my treatment is going to be amazing. Natalie does a range of treatments from, manicures, pedicures and sugaring, but she specialises in massage and facials using the high end Epionce range of products. She decides to treat me to the ‘Top to Toe Salon Special’ – this was a treatment she brought in as an opening offer 18 months ago, but it has proven so popular that she has kept it on. This is the perfect showcase for her skills and consists of a Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage, an Indian Head Massage, an Express Facial and a Foot and Ankle Massage. The treatment room is beautifully decorated in neutral tones and very spacious. It is lovely and warm on this cold winter day and the bed is heated which is just divine. I settle down and Natalie begins my back massage. As usual I am very stiff with sore shoulders from hunching over a laptop. Natalie works hard on my shoulder area easing the tension and the ‘crunchy’ parts which are full of knots. We chat as the treatment begins, but soon I drift off into a blissful state as she expertly massages me. It feels wonderful. Natalie is an excellent masseuse; the pressure is just right, and I feel complete relaxed. Next, she works on my feet. At first it feels a little tickly – I have very sensitive feet! here something about the Grand Central Hotel that feels so luxurious. It’s hard to believe the hotel is a relatively recent addition to Belfast because it feels like such a classic mixing grandeur with glamour. You’ll have seen the famous Observatory Bar of course, it’s a favourite on social media with its unrivalled views over the city skyline. But the rest of the hotel is just as stunning with beautiful modern interiors and a host of options for dining and drinking. Tonight, we are off to dinner at the Seahorse Restaurant on the hotel’s first floor which has a new Shop & Savour three course menu with wine pairings, created by the hotel’s Executive Head Chef, Damian Tumilty using the very best of local provenance. It’s a cold, wet Monday evening Editor Kim enjoys the Shop & Savour Menu Talented Executive Chef Damian Tumilty created when we visit but when we step the menu into the hotel, we are transported to a world away from the dreary streets of Belfast. Warts and Verrucas
W
arts are small, rough lumps or growths on your skin and most people get one at some point in their lives. You can get them anywhere, but warts are most common on your hands, knees and elbows. A wart on the sole of your foot is called a verruca. Warts and verrucas can be unsightly, but they are mostly harmless. The obvious difference between a verruca and a wart is that a verruca is not raised from the skins surface. Pressure from the weight of your body can cause the verruca to grow back into the skin which can, on occasion, be painful. A virus known as HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for causing both warts and veruccas the virus infects cells in your skin, causing it to thicken and coarsen. Warts and verrucas are contagious which means they can be passed by skin to skin contact. They can also spread by contact with floors or surfaces contaminated with the virus. If your skin is wet or you have any cuts or grazes you are more likely to pick up the virus, so infection is often linked to swimming pools and shared changing rooms. It can be difficult to avoid coming into contact with the virus. To prevent getting a wart or verruca or passing the virus to others, avoid sharing towels and if you are at the swimming pool or showers wear flip-flops to protect your feet. If you have a wart or verruca cover it with a waterproof plaster when swimming, or wear verucca socks. Try not to scratch or pick at it as if you rupture the wart or verruca it is more likely to spread the virus. Warts and verrucas usually disappear themselves within two years. Often leaving them untreated is the best option, especially for children, as some treatments can be time-consuming, painful and cause side-effects. However when warts or veruccas become painful,

unsightly or just won’t go away treatments are available from your local pharmacy. The main types of treatment are salicylic acid based products (e.g. Bazuka Treatment Gel) and cryotherapy (e.g. Wartner). Bazuka Gel can take about 12 weeks to get rid of the wart or verruca and requires daily application. The treatment will also affect healthy skin so it is important to apply with care or use a corn plaster or Vaseline to protect the healthy skin. Wartner is based on the same freezing technology used by GPs. It offers an effective and fast removal of warts and verrucas by freezing it in a precise way, causing the wart or verruca to fall off within 10 to 14 days usually. One treatment can be sufficient to get rid of the wart or verruca; however, it may take a few applications. Wartner can only be used on children over 4 years of age. If a wart or verruca bleeds, starts to spread or change in appearance, or is causing you pain and distress you should see your GP. If you have any medical conditions (e.g. diabetes) you should speak to your pharmacist before beginning any treatment.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSITIONAL STYLE Stylish Rachel Boyd from 21Beautique showcases the trends that will last forever.
I want to describe some trends that will always be around and that can be carried through the years. In terms of trends, it all depends on your personal style. What might be my dream trend could make someone else look uncomfortable and vice versa. The very first step I go through with my clients is to hone in on their personal style, as everyone is unique in their likes and dislikes. I have listed three easy trends that can always transition from one season to the next and tend to adapt well to everyone. Stripes have the ability to flatter your body type and style, whether that be vertical stripes for more petite ladies or a horizontal styles for the classic curvy ladies. Florals are another print that is always on trend but more so than ever right now. Select the size floral pattern based on your height, and don’t forget to go with a print that speaks to your style. If prints aren’t your thing, then try a floral print in an accessory, like a shoe or scarf. Who doesn’t love an easy slipon shoe? Mules come in all forms this season, so select the right heel height and shoe style for you. Toes out or toes in, there are so many to choose from to take you right through the year in comfort and in style.
TRANSITIONAL WORKWEAR The biggest question I answer daily in the shop is about workwear. Workwear can be tedious and boring If we let it get to us, let’s be honest some mornings we just want to stay in bed that little bit longer and not think about what to wear to work. When you’re going from the bitter cold outdoors and into a clammy office space or simply the move from winter to summer workwear, it can make dressing comfortably a huge challenge. I believe that light layers are the key to workwear bliss! Focus on lightweight and breathable basics like linen blend blazers, cotton tailored ankle grazers, shirt dresses and sleeveless tops. These items create a solid foundation and allow for versatility and easy layering. Going neutral with colour means you can brighten or deepen the look based on the season. If you’d love some inspiration on mastering your work look check out some of my style session videos on Instagram!
MY THREE KEY TRANSITIONAL ITEMS NO MATTER THE WEATHER TRENCH COAT I adore a trench coat as they enable a really classic chic look on anyone and look amazing dressed up with scarves and layers all winter, but also stunning in more vibrant shades or against neutrals in the summer time. Always keep and invest in an expensive trench and you’ll love it forever.
COWBOY STYLE BOOTS These are another of my favourite transitional pieces as we get so much out of one pair! Pick the right tone and shape for you and they’ll always be there by your side! Bare legs and dresses? Get the boots back on. Skinnies and teddy coats? Boots again. We love them!
CRISP WHITE BLOUSE My ultimate number one transitional fashion tip is to always keep a crisp white blouse for layering. Everything looks amazing with a blouse when it’s layered correctly. White shirt, denim shorts and some sandals – stunning. White shirt layered with a heavy knit and a silky scarf - still stunning. It’s my ultimate staple. Each week on 21Beautique Instagram I style up items in the shop not only to sell but to inspire you guys on outfit ideas. Follow us to see loads more fashion tips and fun.

MAKE THE SWITCH TO FIRMUS Natural Gas Central to Moving Matrix for Linda Giles
O
riginally from west Cork, Linda Giles has been living in Northern Ireland since 1988. Having worked in communications all her life, starting out as a reporter on weekly newspapers, then editor of a range of specialist magazines, a stint at UTV and finally a senior manager in the public health sector, Linda made the decision last year to start transitioning into an early retirement which coincided with an exciting house move. A keen golfer and a member of Banbridge Golf Club, Linda moved just down the road from Dromore, Co Down, to be closer to the golf course, taking the opportunity to downsize to a bungalow in Thorn Heights. Despite selecting the property for its great overall condition, one immediate change she resolved to make was switching the central heating system from oil to natural gas. Linda said: “I wanted the benefits of natural gas from the start, so before I had even moved in I had approached firmus energy to make sure I could get connected and had an installer booked. Then as soon as the house was officially in my name, I organised the switch. It was all very easy.” Switching to gas also freed up plenty of extra space inside and outside Linda’s new home. As part of the switch, the immersion, water tank, bulky oil boiler and the oil tank all were removed. This extra space came in especially handy as Linda was transitioning from a big two-storey house to a smaller bungalow. “I love gas – it’s clean, convenient, consistent, and reliable! Plus, unlike oil, I never run out and don’t have to deal with the hassle of refilling my tank all at once. Instead, I can pay for the gas I use each month, making it easier to track and budget. As I am over 60 I’m also entitled to join a special membership scheme provided by firmus energy called ‘firmus care’. This

entitles customers to a range of special privileges aimed at making life easier. The one I like most is the free boiler safety check every year,” she said. All this convenience and ease means two things for Linda. She has more time to spend on the golf course, where she not only plays but has recently taken on the communications of the club. A close second is walking the other two loves of her life, apart from her son Ross of course, her rescue dogs Bella and Max. She said: “I love coming home from a round of golf or a long walk with my dogs and into a nice warm home. If I want to run a shower or bath, I can use as much water as I need without waiting for it to heat up or worrying about it running out. That’s the great thing about natural gas - you can have as much instant heat and hot water as you need!” So while advocating for women to ‘Get into Golf’, she is also a firm believer that everyone needs to ‘Get into Gas!’ To date, over 95,000 customers have connected to natural gas with firmus energy and are enjoying the benefits that natural gas brings - from constant hot water, to more space in the garden, more efficient boilers to simply being a better choice for the environment.

CATWALK TRENDS FOR SPRING SUMMER 2020
Ann Doyle, owner of Gasp Boutique has her finger on the pulse of fashion Here we are again ladies - another month has swiftly passed us by and we are into the ‘spring’ of things here in Gasp for the month of March. Just to take your minds off winter with those cosy coats and boots for a second I decided this month to give you a little insight to what was trending on the catwalks for the spring/summer season. I know it’s hard to visualise light dresses and false tan when the majority of us are still bundled up in our warm cosy jumpers - but just to keep you in the know, it helps to get ahead with what’s trending. From the runways of Caroline Herrera, Miu Miu, Chanel, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and many more designers there are so many trends I want to tell you about. Get ready to don some ruffles, puffed sleeves, polka dots, artisanal crochet designs, 60s disco collars and 60s wallpaper prints, couture HERE WE GO ! feathers, hot pants, DRAWSTRINGS ruffles, bold neon’s and From the New York fashion week right through much more. to London, Milan and Paris we have seen huge Here is a small list I trends coming through. For a start designers have put together for added drawstrings to anoraks, jumpsuits, you as I welcome you coats, and dresses for a touch of sportiness. to a new decade of fashion inspiration. These Anyone can wear this leisure design, even if
trends are big, bold and you’ve never played a sport in your life ladies, statement-making. it still comes across to be a comfy casual look. 68 | Local Women | Feature
POLKA DOTS
I bet you have always thought that large polka dots are only worn by your children well think again. The Spring/ Summer 2020 runways were chock full of very large polka dots, big and bold ones to! There is no such thing as too much if you are brave enough to wear them that is.
WRAPPED ANKLES
If you’ve been keeping an eye out in the fashion magazines styling tips over the last couple of months, you’ll have noticed that several have been tying their boot straps around their ankles. Well ladies for this summer the trend is tying your sandal straps around your trousers. This is going to be lapped up this season, I just hope those ties are very tight when you are walking down English Street on your way to see us here in Gasp and they don’t trip you up!!!
SHEER LAYERS
Sheer blouses, tops, dresses, layer them all on top of each other, whatever your style is you can surly experiment with these fabrics. It’s a great way to play around with these sheer silhouettes and textures so whether you layer a sheer shirt, a top, a vest or go all out with a sheer dress you will look sheerfull.
NEON GREEN
We all know neon has been (and will continue to be) very trendy but pay special attention to the new trend of bright green hue. It’s making a huge splash of colour on the runways - wow this is so bright for my eyes, I just hope we get the weather to enjoy this vibrant shade.
PUFFED SLEEVES
We saw a revival of this trend last year, but in 2020 it’s time to make way - both mentally and physically for the puffed sleeve. Whether the puff is focussed on your shoulder, or more gradually down your arm, the puff is so much bigger. I’m not too sure if I could wear this size puff down English Street I would knock everyone out!
DISCO COLLAR
Bringing back those 60s vibes onto the catwalk this season was the disco collar! Yip, you heard it right - it’s the Saturday night fever vibes as the wide collar made a surprise comeback on the spring 2020 runways. Modernised on coats, jackets, shirts, combined with contrasting colours to make it really stand out, and why not - what’s the point of a super collar if you can’t really see it! This look is getting me in the mood to buy a disco ball!
CROCHET
Crochet is getting a modern update this spring, with ultra-feminine dresses and evening wear that feels modern with a special touch of your Granny’s handmade crochet expertise! The fashion industry has been looking for
ways to become more sustainable, so this season on the runway this is a “trend” that embraces a slow, handmade technique that can be kept and worn with renewability. I love the crochet look but it seems more appealing to me for the summer rather than the winter.
HOTPANTS
Ladies root into your wardrobes, I’m sure you will all have a pair of hot pants stuffed away somewhere. Hot pants have made a serious comeback on the spring 2020 runway from itsy bitsy knit shorts, cut off denims and leather Chanel styled the look worn with black tights you can also style them with leggings add a pair them knee-high boots or pumps, anything goes with the hot pants craze! Somehow I don’t think a pair of these would suit me- I reckon I will stick to my full length pants! That’s all for this month ladies, I hope you have all enjoyed my column Until next month Regards

‘I’m finally looking forward to the future’
As bulimia threatened to take the life she no longer felt was worth living, Hilltown’s Colette Lydon could never have imagined the bright future she’s now living.

s school friends complimented her weight loss, little did they know Colette Lydon was in reality battling a life-threatening eating disorder. The Hilltown woman, now 25, had been the girl at the disco who never got a dance so as the pounds melted and that changed, she started to believe that weight loss was her key to happiness. “I’d grown up in a happy family in Hilltown and it wasn’t until secondary school things started changing,” she recalls. “The hormones kicked in and I was becoming more aware of my body image. I was a bit over-weight but it hadn’t seemed to matter until then,” says the charity worker who now lives in east Belfast. “At discos I’d hear boys saying, ‘she’s disgusting,’ or ‘look at her’. That was a big deal to me when I was only 13.
“At school there was more pressure and I started to find life tougher. I internalised it and every time I looked in the mirror, I hated what I saw. I felt I didn’t fit in, I thought I was weird and I started to have really low self-esteem.” 98 | Local Women | News Feature

But the severity of Colette’s condition went unnoticed as, because she’d been carrying extra weight to start with, when she lost inches people ironically congratulated her. “You become sneaky too. If someone asked why I was skipping lunch I’d say I’d had a big breakfast. At dinner I’d say I’d had a big lunch,” she says. The situation nose-dived though when Colette moved to Belfast to attend Queen’s University. Away from home with no-one to answer to, her situation deteriorated. “I don’t want to talk about how much weight I lost because this can be a trigger among people with an eating disorder,” she says.

The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy I received helped transform my life,” says Colette, who also then plucked up the courage to tell her mum. ƒ Jamie and Colette

Among those are people she’s met through the blog she started four years ago and on which she shared her story. Instead of the criticism she feared, Colette was flooded with support. “Social media was a huge positive in my recovery although it has a dark side too,” she admits. Colette’s now passionate about helping others and volunteers with the Eating Disorders Association Northern Ireland. “My message to anyone struggling is to remember, you don’t have to live like that forever. Complete recovery is possible,” she stresses. “When I was at my lowest I was convinced I wouldn’t even make it to 25. I didn’t think I’d be able to cope with life and I couldn’t see any future. “I could never have imagined my life now with my fiancé Jamie - we’re getting married in June - and my two dogs, Milo and Bella. Now I embrace every day and as for the future... I can hardly wait!” * For help, support and information about eating disorders visit eatingdisordersni.co.uk. Local Women | News Feature | 99
Create Kerb Appeal with your Driveway Whether it’s extra car parking or an upgrade on a traditional garden, your driveway can add value to your home so why not create a first impression to be proud of and invest in a driveway to make your home stand out from the rest? Finished with complementary planting, your driveway can add instant kerb appeal and an inviting entrance to your home.

riveways have become a multifunctional part of the modern home. As well as creating a parking facility, a well landscaped block paved driveway
enhances the style and value of a property and provides a safe play area for children. Tobermore block paving products are available in a variety of styles and colours, are highly durable, cost-effective and require little maintenance. Whether your house is contemporary or traditional, we have a paving range that can enhance the appearance and character of your home whilst meeting your budget. ‘Artro’ is the latest block paving range to be released by Tobermore. A linear block, the Artro range draws inspiration from the European clay paver style which has become more popular in recent years. With creativity at its core, Artro’s strength lies in its ability to adapt its look depending on the colour,
New from Tobermore – Artro in Carbon, Steel & Platinum mix
laying pattern or jointing material used. Artro can be laid in either a linear or herringbone pattern allowing you to explore multiple design options. Depending on how linear paving is laid, it can give the illusion of greater depth which can bring style to a small outdoor area. You can also combine Artro with Tobermore’s extensive range of edging and kerbs to add additional character to each individual paving scheme. The Artro range includes seven different colour variations ranging from warm tones, ideal for more traditional settings, to cool greys, perfect for complementing contemporary designs. If you are in need of some inspiration to help you get your project started, visit www.tobermore.co.uk for more information. TAKE TWO …with Gemma and Margo Sometimes you need a little bit of extra help – so, supermum Margo Garrett joins her daughter Gemma to give advice across the generations to Local Women readers.
“... All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered.” Dear Gemma and Margo, I hope you don’t mind me writing to you - I am a man, so not your usual reader I’m guessing, but I was hoping you could help me with a problem that has left me heartbroken. Last year my fiancée broke things off with me. We had planned to marry this summer and suddenly out of the blue she ended our relationship. She says there is no one else and she just wants to be alone. All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered. I wanted to marry this woman and start a family and she has just walked away. Why has she done this? I have been very patient with her and given
her space, but I still hope there is a chance. What can I do to make her come back to me?
James
Hi James, As heart breaking as this is, you have to start accepting that she may never come back. You have done the right thing and given her the space and time she wants. You have to start focusing on you now and your own life. You can’t put everything on hold for someone to make up their mind about you. Move on, go on dates, live your life. If you are meant to be, I firmly believe you will be -but for now you have to force yourself to focus on you and move on. Good luck,
Gemma x
Hi James, I’m so very sorry that you have had your hopes and dreams shattered. You have said this happened last year, so she has had time to think about her decision. I think if she really wanted to be with you, she would be. I know it’s very hard to hear this, but you need to move on with your life. Go out with friends and try to be as sociable as circumstances allow. As the saying goes, when one door shuts another opens there will be someone out there for you. Just be yourself and try to enjoy your life. Maybe one day you’ll look back and realise it was a lucky escape. I wish you every happiness for the future.
If you have a problem you can get in touch with Margo and Gemma by email at editor@localwomensnews.com 108 | Local Women | Feature

The Miss Northern Ireland heats are underway and Local Women columnist and reigning queen Lauren Leckey is helping put the contestants at ease as they step into the spotlight. I had a busy start to the month with lots of exciting things happening. To start the month, I attended a spinathon in Olympia Leisure Centre to raise money for the Mary Peters Trust. I had a great morning and it was a very long time since I’ve been on a spin bike! I then popped into Crawford Clarke Cars where I had a look around the showroom to see the gorgeous cars that they have as I will soon be handing back my Mini. Two supercars caught my eye and I had to get my picture with them - The Ferrari FF and the Bentley Continental Cabriolet. In preparation for the launch of Miss Northern Ireland 2020 I called down to Rosie’s Closet in Newry where I left it to owner Rosie and her daughter Kirsty to find me the perfect cocktail dress. They couldn’t have chosen a more perfect dress it was exactly what I was looking for and also the first dress they handed me to try on. It was bright fuchsia pink, with a deep V-neck, oversized puff sleeves and gold button details. A day prior I called into Beauty Boulevard in Lisburn to get the nude/gold nails. The day of the launch I like to get my hair done first. So, I called in to Michele International where Denise, Chantel and the ladies curled and pinned my hair. I then went round to the Makeup Pro Store to get ultra glam makeup, then back to Michelle international to have my hair finished - and over to the Grand Central Hotel. The launch took place in the Observatory overlooking the bright Belfast lights. It was a great night with drinks provided from Schweppes, speeches from GM of Hastings Hotels James McGinn, MD of ACA models and contest organiser Alison Clarke, Former Miss NI Zoe Salmon, features editor of Sunday World Roisin Gorman and myself – it was fantastic to get the time to thank everyone who has helped me over the past year.
ƒ Broken Shaker
I was so excited to judge my first heat at Broken Shaker in Belfast. I wore a very special dress- the beautiful Rosie’s Closet gown I wore when I was crowned as Miss Northern Ireland 2020. I got amazing wear out of this dress, and I didn’t want to see it at the back of the wardrobe. So, I took it to the Zip Yard on the Lisburn Road where they transformed the fulllength dress into a cocktail dress, and I love it! It was a great night with 18 beautiful contestants. One was crowned Miss Belfast and the other Miss Broken Shaker. Next was the Spice heat in Templepatrick - it was a surreal feeling to think I was in the exact same position these girls where in last year when I became Miss Spice. I know exactly how it feels to be in these girls’ shoes so before we started, I gave then advice to ease their minds. As the months go on, I can’t wait to meet all the other finalists.
ƒ Lauren and Mary Peters
Upcoming this month Makeup Pro Store Belfast are holding a coffee morning and makeup demo to raise money for the Pretty ’n Pink Breast cancer charity. It will be a great morning all for a good cause. Chat next month where we will be over halfway through all the heats! ƒ Lauren at Crawford Clark cars.

Use ANIMAL PRINT in YOUR HOME DECOR Paula Sweeney helps us liven up our interior with animal print this season By Paula Sweeney at Fabric World Maydown

ebra, leopard, tiger, snake – animal print has long been ubiquitous in the world of fashion, but it’s no stranger to an interior designer’s bag of tricks either and in 2020 this trend is moving fi rmly into our homes.
118 | Local Women | Feature
It’s a choice that requires courage; animal print is no shrinking violet. It adds a sense of adventure, diversity and glamour to your interior in a way that few other looks do. But it also can be toned down to behave as nothing more than an accent that, as soon as it’s noticed, sings vibrancy and ‘va va voom’. There are some amazing animal print fabrics coming through in fabulous textures to ensure your home decor is on trend. We are seeing heavy upholstery chenilles with metallic animal embroidery and quirky prints with elegant zebras making a statement in monochromatic tones. There are even full on jungle printed velvets in vibrant colours. It’s great to see so many choices in so many different types of fabric and there are so many ways to add these fabrics to your homes in stylish and elegant ways. Put your own unique stamp on your scheme by adding a bit of personality to it.

LW WEDDINGS
Michael David Michael McCrory and David Parker, both from West Belfast, married on July 13, 2018 on Lusty Beg Island, County Fermanagh. The sun shone as David’s parents, Linda and David Snr, and Michael’s parents, Mary and Michael Snr, and the 150 guests, cheered the couple on as they arrived in breath-taking style by yacht, surprising everyone. But the biggest surprise of the day was saved for Michael as his seriously ill mum, Mary, who was mostly wheelchair bound, decided she would bravely walk him down the aisle together with his father. This was to fulfill a promise that she had made to her son, but due to her illness, he’d been unsure she would be able to keep it. The emotional service took place outside with the stunning Lower Lough Erne as the backdrop and following the first kiss as husbands, guests were given heart shaped balloons with a, ‘love is in the air’ message tagged to them and then released them simultaneously to the summer sky. David’s brother Alfie was best man and his sister, Linda was bridesmaid and Michael’s sister, Elaine and brother, Stephen, filled in as best woman and best man. And not forgetting Michael and David’s four legged GroomsDog, Henry, who even wore a tuxedo for the special day. The couple’s honeymoon saw them travel to America, where they spent four days in New York and even met Star Trek legend, George Takei. Then they spent five days in Las Vegas, followed by a week lazing by the pool in stunning Mexico. Michael’s mum, Mary, passed away peacefully on October 08, 2019, but the family has some incredible memories from the wedding that they will cherish forever.
