STORY OF MY LIFE

Lizzie Gilmore from Bendooragh tells Local Women how her experience fighting cancer prompted her to put pen to paper and write a book to help young people deal with cancer.

I

By Lisa Smyth

t’s hard to think of anything positive coming out of a cancer diagnosis.

After finding out she had Hodgkin lymphoma, Lizzie Gilmore began an aggressive course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in a bid to beat the disease. In the months that followed her diagnosis, she experienced crippling exhaustion, she lost her hair and worse still, at just 24-years-old, she was faced with the harrowing reality that she might not survive. However, Lizzie is now coming through the other side and is using her own experience to try and help other young people affected by cancer. “If I can help just one person, then I’ll be happy,” she said. Lizzie (25) first began to worry about her health two years ago, but it was far from straightforward to find out what was wrong. She noticed a lump in her neck and originally put it down to swollen glands. Lizzie made numerous visits to the GP and casualty unit, where she was treated for the likes of infected lymph nodes, before she realised that her life may be at risk. “They mentioned different things that it might be, but no-one ever mentioned cancer,” said Lizzie, who lives with her partner, Mark Paul, in Bendooragh outside Ballymoney. ƒ Lizzie donated her hair to help another cancer patient

Eventually a doctor carried out a camera test and told her he wanted to do a biopsy.

She still didn’t really appreciate how unwell she was.

She said: “He said he could see the mass in he would like to do a biopsy.

She continued: “I started to think something was up when one of the nurses came over and asked me if

“That did ring alarm bells for me, but still no-one mentioned cancer to me. “In between that appointment and the appointment for the biopsy, I discovered another lump in my neck.”

anyone was going to be with me in the afternoon when the doctor was coming to see me. ƒ Lizzie is moving on with her life

“Then when he came around, he asked me and my mum to come and see him in his office.

“Normally, they sit down with you at the bedside, so I knew something However, she faced a further setback when she went for the biopsy was wrong. and doctors found a clot in her jugular vein and was admitted to hospital for treatment and further tests. “We went in and he said it was looking like it was something more 8 | Local Women | News Feature

sinister than swollen lymph nodes, he couldn’t confirm 100% without a surgical biopsy, but in his medical opinion, he thought it was lymphoma. “I didn’t know what that was, but I remember when he said he thought it was sinister, my mum asked if it was cancer and he said ‘yes.’ “I didn’t want to cry in front of the doctor, but I remember that moment, thinking I didn’t want to die, the first thing I thought was that I was going to die. “My mum and I walked back to my bed and I pulled the curtain around me and I cried and cried and cried. “I went to phone Mark but I couldn’t even speak, I think my mum had to tell him and when he got to the hospital, I was still crying. “I remember saying to my mum that I couldn’t do it, I knew about the treatments for cancer and how awful they could be and I told her I couldn’t get through it and she just hugged me ƒ Mark and Lizzie and told me that I would, that we would.” Even when Lizzie was given a firm diagnosis on July 11, 2018, she endured further delays to the beginning of her treatment due to broken scanning equipment to tell doctors how advanced her cancer was. When she was finally able to begin chemotherapy, she was floored by the exhaustion. “It was like nothing I had ever felt before, it didn’t matter how much you slept,” she said. She also made the courageous decision to cut off her hair and donate it to a charity that transformed it into a wig for another cancer patient. “It helped me that I was able to help someone else,” she explained. However, it wasn’t the last incredible and selfless gesture by Lizzie.

ƒ Penny and Teddy have helped Lizzie get through her illness

She continued: “I took my steroids too late to get to sleep one night, so I sat up writing a book about my experience. “I wanted to explain what I had been through, all about the process, the book is actually called The Adventures of Stanley, which is what I called my PICC line. “I hated it, it was the thing they gave me my medication through, and one of the nurses told me to give it a name to make it less scary and I called it Stanley.” After completing her book, Lizzie was persuaded to show it to one of the support specialists from Cancer Fund for Children who had been helping her through her journey. She was so impressed that the charity decided it wanted to turn it into a book to help children and young people affected by cancer. Lizzie said: “I never wrote the book for anyone to read it, I thought it was just for me to have, so I’m really delighted that people are now getting to see it and I’m hopefully helping other people going through something similar. “I had to wait for 12 weeks after the radiotherapy to find out if it had been successful and I got good news. “It was such a relief that I didn’t have to go through more treatment, but I couldn’t let myself be too happy because it’s always in the back of your mind that it’s going to come back. “The more time passes the less chance there is of that happening, so you can relax a bit more. “I felt like I coped quite well at the start, I went back to work because I felt like I needed to get back to normal, but it wasn’t normal. “Things are never going to be the same as they were before, it’s going to be a new normal and I realised I was rushing into things, so I took some time off work and went to counselling. “I have two dogs now, Penny and Teddy, and they have kept me going. “Mark and my family were brilliant too, I don’t think I would have got through it without them.

ƒ Mark was a rock to Lizzie throughout her illness

“Cancer is difficult, it’s terrifying, and I hope I can help other people going through it.” Local Women | News Feature | 9

“Before that I would have gone to a gym and done the usual cardio but this was totally different and before too long I was hooked - I really enjoyed it.” With the progress and the impressive weights Geraldine was lifting, it wasn’t too long before she was entering competitions. “We then started training for powerlifting and the deadlift was my favourite lift so we decided that I would enter my first competition and it went from there. Ryan has continued to train me and he works out my programmes and things have continued to build from there. “I came to the sport late on in comparison to others as most of the other competitors are in their 20s and 30s. “I enjoyed powerlifting training and at the moment I’m training four days a week for

I’m a waitress at the Millside Restaurant in Cloughmills, so I can work my training round that which is great.” At the end of last year the diminutive waitress who stands at just 5 foot 1 came home from a British Powerlifting Union competition in Manchester with two Golds in the Dead Lift and Bench Press - notching up two personal best lifts in the process. “I joined the British Powerlifting Union last year and the President is Emma YlitaloJames who is originally from Northern Ireland - she used to train in Sam’s Gym where I train. That was my first competition under that federation. “I lift in the Masters 2 category. Masters means over a certain age - Masters one is age 40 to 45 and then Masters 2 is 45 to 49. He’s very proud of what I have achieved and he has been by my side from the start of this journey - in fact I wouldn’t have taken this path if it wasn’t for him. “He looks after me and helps tweak my programming if needed, he’ll work on my lifting technique and nutrition and on days when things aren’t going the way I would have liked them to, he will encourage me because he has the belief in me - I really can’t thank Ryan enough for all his support. I have also had great support from everyone at Sam’s Gym in Ballymoney, they have backed me from the get go. “My children have also been a tremendous support too - they are very proud of what I do and what I have achieved - there’s no doubt there aren’t too many other mums who are powerlifters!” Despite having already enjoyed success in the sport, Geraldine continues to push herself at every opportunity, aiming for the best she can possibly be.

“I always said I wanted two red plates on the squat which is 125kg and I did it. I set myself a goal for 120kg on the deadlift and I did 150kg, so now I’m setting a target of 175kg. When I reach a target I’m always setting new ones, I like to challenge myself. I want to keep setting records and my aim is to get to the World Championships. ntibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection. They work by killing bacteria or preventing them from spreading - but they do not work for everything. Many mild bacterial infections get better on their own without using antibiotics, and antibiotics do not work for viral infections such as colds and flu, and most coughs and sore throats.

Antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat: Edward Quinn and Rachel Kelly.

Sisters, Valerie & Anita Mullan.

• chest infections • ear infections in children • sore throats In most cases these conditions can be self-treated with treatment and advice given by your local pharmacist. When it comes to antibiotics, take your doctor's advice on whether you need them or not.

Antibiotics may be used to treat bacterial infections that:

Emma, Alexandra, Zoe, Lynda and Rebecca.

• are unlikely to clear up without antibiotics • could infect others • could take too long to clear without treatment • carry a risk of more serious complications People at a high risk of infection may also be given antibiotics as a precaution, known as antibiotic prophylaxis.

How to take antibiotics? Take antibiotics as directed on the packet or the patient information leaflet that comes with the medicine, or as instructed by your GP or pharmacist. Also take note of when the antibiotic should be taken in relation to food.

Antibiotics can come as:

Wilson and Heather Wright, Anne Dylan and Margaret Campbell.

FIRMUS ENERGY LOCAL WOMEN MAGAZINE

AWARDS 2020 Submit your nomination online at

localwomenmagazine.com/awards20 All application forms must be submitted before midnight on March 29th, 2020.

• tablets, capsules or a liquid that you drink – these can be used to treat most types of mild to moderate infections in the body • creams, lotions, sprays and drops – these are often used to treat skin infections and eye or ear infections • injections – these can be given as an injection or through a drip directly into the blood or muscle and are used for more serious infections in a hospital setting. If you forget to take a dose of your antibiotics, take that dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take your course of antibiotics as normal. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

There is an increased risk of side effects if you take two doses closer together than recommended. Accidentally taking one extra dose of your antibiotic is unlikely to cause you any serious harm, but it will increase your chances of getting side effects, such as pain in your stomach, diarrhoea, and feeling or being sick. If you accidentally take more than one extra dose of your antibiotic, are worried or you get severe side effects, speak to your GP or pharmacist. As with any medicine, antibiotics can cause side effects. Most antibiotics do not cause problems if they're used properly and serious side effects are rare.

The common side effects include: • Being/feeling sick • bloating and indigestion • diarrhoea Some people may have an allergic reaction to antibiotics, especially penicillin and a type called cephalosporins. Although very rare, in some instances this can lead to a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which is a medical emergency. Some antibiotics are not suitable for people with certain medical problems, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Only ever take antibiotics prescribed for you – never "borrow" them from a friend or family member. Some antibiotics do not mix well with other medicines, such as the contraceptive pill and alcohol. Read the information leaflet that comes with your medicine carefully and discuss any concerns with your pharmacist or GP. Antibiotic resistance is a big problem – taking antibiotics when you do not need them can mean they will not work for you in the future.

TWO’S COMPANY

Local Women’s Gillian Anderson and her partner Colin Marchant spent a delightful evening at the Portrush Atlantic Hotel sampling its warm, welcoming atmosphere and fabulous food

I

t was a cold, bleak and stormy evening when Colin and myself paid a visit to the Port Kitchen & Bar in the Portrush Atlantic Hotel, however, the welcome we received was warm, friendly and very welcoming.

The staff were so helpful and there was a lovely atmosphere as the tables were packed with couples, friends and families all out enjoying the tasty fayre. We were shown to our table by the lovely Cecille Belen who ran through the Two’s Company menu with us. For just £39.95 per couple you can enjoy two courses accompanied by a bottle of house wine. There is a great selection on the menu - starters range from West Bay BBQ Chicken Wings accompanied by a Lacada Brewery citrus IPA sauce to Crispy Brie Bites with Cranberry Jam, pickled beetroot and dressed leaves and Smoked Haddock Fishcakes. However, as it was such a miserable evening, we opted for the very tasty and hearty Potato and

ƒ Serving up great food

Leek soup with wheaten bread which was piping hot and delicious. Our waiter Stefano brought our mains - I opted for the Catch of the Day which was a beautiful beer battered Haddock fillet with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce the portion was huge! You really can’t beat the taste of delicious fresh fish which has been cooked perfectly and this was cooked to perfection by the very talented chef Nigel Steele. Colin had decided on the Open Steak Sandwich - if I said he was happy when he saw his plate brimming with tender steak pieces, mushrooms and sauteed onions served on garlic toasted bread with pepper sauce and chips, it would be an understatement - he was one very satisfied man!

Other options on the menu were Deep South crispy fried buttermilk chicken thighs, secret spice, coleslaw and jalapeno mayo, Irish pork loin chop served with hot apple and cider sauce, a black

VEGAN/VEGETARIAN NIGHT Veganuary has long passed us by, but if you’ve opted to continue on with vegan lifestyle there’s plenty of vegan treats and dishes to be enjoyed at the Portrush Atlantic Hotel. However, on February 28 at 7.30pm, there will be a special Vegan/Vegetarian night which is a 3 course meal with tea or coffee for just £19.95 per person. pudding bon bon and chips and a Mediterranean vegan tartlet served with a tossed house salad and pickles. Although we were both more than satisfied with what we had just enjoyed, we couldn’t leave without trying a dessert - it would have been wrong not to - right? The display case is packed with mouth watering delights which are all very, very tempting - Rainbow Cake, Chocolate Fudge Cake, Chocolate Tart with Italian meringue, Gin Trifle, Lemon Sponge Cake to name but a few. However, our curiosity got the better of us and we decided to share a Pornstar Meringue - something I had never heard of before. When it arrived we were left speechless at the size of the portion! Food and Beverage supervisor Connor Sweeney explained that we were about to enjoy caramelised passion fruit with a passionfruit meringue, a passion fruit syrup, strawberry coulis, fresh strawberries and fresh cream. Not only did this dessert look impressive, the taste more than matched - the meringue was bursting with flavour of passion fruit and the syrup added to the dish, creating an explosion of flavour.

COCKTAIL MASTERCLASS

Rest assured we both enjoyed and savoured every last mouthful. It really was a delicious way to round off a fantastic meal.

All Shook Up Cocktail Masterclass is definitely one the ladies will love and is perfect for a girly get together.

Our meals were absolutely delicious and the portions were more than generous and when you add in a bottle of house wine, the Two’s Company menu costing £39.95 per couple, really is great value.

The Cocktail Masterclass includes:

The Port Kitchen & Bar staff were all so friendly, knowledgeable and efficient and they made our evening even more enjoyable - so many thanks to Conor, Cecille, Alrossalejo, Stefano and Harrison for your hospitality.

A professional and friendly bartender tutor.

Whether you just fancy a coffee and cake with friends, a family dinner, a quick bite for lunch or a romantic dinner for two, the Portrush Atlantic Hotel can cater for you - I know we will definitely be back!

“I may be in my seventies, but age is just a number. I certainly don’t feel my age.”

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER FOR HELENA Cullybackey actress Helena Bereen has just made her debut on a London stage at the age of 75. And she loved every minute.

S

By Maureen Coleman

he has trod the boards in theatres across Ireland, appeared in the films Hunger and The Devil’s Doorway and starred in Mark Cousin’s documentary tribute to his home city, I Am Belfast. But at the age of 75 Cullybackey woman Helena Bereen has marked a major milestone in her lengthy and illustrious career – acting on a London stage for the first time. Helena, who lives in Killinchy with her partner Derek, has just finished a run at Finborough Theatre, reprising a role she originally played at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast 20 years ago. The mum-of-three revisited the character of Mrs Tymelly in the Joseph Crilly-penned play On McQuillan’s Hill, directed by Belfast actor and director Jonathan Harden. Helena was thrilled when she discovered she had landed the part once again and although the lines were lost to her when she picked up the script second time round, it wasn’t long before she found her feet. “To be honest I didn’t remember the play all that well but once I started rehearsing the part, it all came back to me,” she says. “I loved playing Mrs Tymelly in the Lyric and I just played her the same way in London. “When I was first asked to come along and audition for the role at Finborough Theatre, I initially thought I wouldn’t be able to get myself organised to go. My partner has MS and I’m his carer, but my children urged me to do it and with help from home, I was able to take the role when it was offered to me. “It was a wonderful experience and I’m so glad I did it. The theatre was lovely, the cast were fabulous, and Jonathan is such a talented director.” On McQuillan’s Hill is set in the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement and centres around the story of IRA volunteer Fra Maline and a celebration in the local community hall that turns to chaos. With peace on a knife-edge, bitter memories, family secrets and lies long buried in the bog threaten to resurface as an accidental family reunion descends into pitch black farce. Mrs Tymelly keeps the keys to the hall, and is the guardian of everyone’s secrets, as well as one of her own. While it may have been her London theatre debut, Helena is no stranger to the city, having worked there in the 1960s as a nurse. She first trained in Belfast then moved to Beckenham Maternity to do midwifery but after getting married and having her family, she never returned to nursing. “I was a bit nervous about going over to London,” she says. “It’s changed so much since I was there, but I found it so easy getting about in taxis or on the Tube. “I stayed with Polly Devlin OBE and really enjoyed my time in the city. It was a very different experience to when I lived there before.” Helena also lived for a time in Canada and Co Louth, where she indulged her passion for acting. From an early age she showed promise, appearing in various school productions before joining amateur dramatic groups. In Canada, a professional theatre company approached her, but it wasn’t until she returned to Ireland that she was granted her Equity Card. At the age of 45 she began acting professionally, finally fulfilling a dream she had had since her teens. Her first major role was in a play at Andrew’s Lane in Dublin, directed by Peter Sheridan. On the second night the lead actress was unable to

play the role, so Helena was asked to step in. Naturally, she was nervous; so much so that she forgot her lines. But another cast member helped her in a memorable way, giving a new meaning to ‘corpsing’. “I was playing a Mother Superior in this play and didn’t want to let myself or the others down,” she says. “I was so nervous as it was my first big job in Dublin and my mind just went blank. There was another actress on stage with me, but she was in a coffin. She prompted me, which was hilarious.” A stalwart of Belfast’s theatre scene, Helena has appeared on every stage in town, from the old Arts to the new Lyric, the Old Museum to the MAC; she has graced them all in a variety of roles. She has also appeared in television shows including Fair City, Glenroe and The Clinic and films such as Steve McQueen’s Hunger and the critically acclaimed film I Am Belfast. While having loved her acting experience in London, Helena is happy to be back home in Killinchy and says it’s a great time for young actors and actresses to be based in Northern Ireland. Film and television work is regular now, with the growth of the industry here, but she feels stage work is still somewhat limited. In saying that, she’s back at the MAC again this month for another run of Three’s Theatre Company’s Now For The North – a women’s rights production that she is proud to be part of. “I love being involved in great productions like Now For The North and of course, On McQuillan’s Hill,” she says. “I may be in my seventies, but age is just a number. I certainly don’t feel my age. “It might have taken me a while to get to London to act but now I’ve ticked it off my bucket list and I would do it again in a heartbeat.” Local Women | News Feature | 25

Sparkle Bringing

to the

High Street

As owner of Equivalenza and Mermaid Cove, Marion Lewis is determined to bring some life back to the high street and has created two amazing stores which are a treasure trove of beautiful and sweet-smelling products. By Kim Kelly • Photos Gerard Gormley

Y

ou could say that Marian Lewis has a nose for business – after all her two shops Equivalenza and Mermaid Cove stock the most gorgeous range of beautiful smelling products. Scent is a huge part of Marion’s business and she is passionate about the effect that our sense of smell has on our lives. And the feelings of wellbeing and happiness that her customers gain from her products encourages her to keep on searching for new and exciting ranges to bring to her stores. Her passion for products that are cruelty free and environmentally friendly reassure her that her business is both ethical and good for her customers. She says: “Not only did I want to inject a bit of life back into the high street, but I wanted to create Marion Lewis somewhere that my customers could come to get away from their normal lives. I offer them luxury that doesn’t cost a fortune and encourage them to think of their own wellbeing and health.” Equivalenza has been trading in Derry since 2013 and, with its range of bespoke scents at affordable prices, it is a huge success. Such was the success that Marion branched out and opened Mermaid Cove – a beachy style store in the heart of the city which specialises in gorgeous smelling candles, skin creams, makeup and bath bombs. As a well-known businesswoman in the town, Marion started her career as a fashion retailer. Along with her husband Paul she owned clothes shop Denim & Leather which many readers will remember.

However, Marion took an extended break from her career to raise her sons Dakota and Denver now 25 and 30. Unfortunately, she was plagued with ill health and mobility problems during these years. Although she loved being a mum and looking after her sons, these years were difficult for her. But after having a double hip replacement she felt she was ready to begin her career again. And it is perhaps because of her experience of ill health that she decided to focus on selling products that enhance your general wellbeing. Coupled with her warm personality and natural empathy, Marion is perfectly placed to run shops which focus on wellness. She says: “Like many women who take time out to have children, I lost sight of who I was. I was used to being busy and having a career so being at home was a different pace for me. “However, after my hip replacements I knew it was time for me to get started again. The time was right, and I have never looked back. “Getting back into business was nerve wracking but so exciting, I was ready to spread my wings again!” Marion and Paul were on holidays in Spain when they discovered Equivalenza. This Spanish brand specialises in its own high-quality fragrance, cosmetics and home fragrances.

Continues on page 32

Continued from page 31

Marion immediately knew that this concept would work well in Derry and so after a few trips back to Spain, she set up the new store which was an immediate success. Marion says: “Our customers love the products. Smell is such an important thing in life, it can bring you right back to a time that is just a memory. “I’ve had people come in and describe their mum’s perfume and together we have been able to work out what notes and tones it had and fi nd the fragrance. “People have been reduced to tears when they can smell the scent their mum wore. It’s so lovely to be able to do that.” Marion is a fi rm believer in local independent businesses and when she started back at work, she knew she wanted to create shops and products that would appeal to high street shoppers. Sadly, our high streets have lost out to online retailers over the past few years. But Marion recognised that independent traders have a role to play in bringing footfall back to the high street.

She says: “I knew if the product was right, the customers would come.” With the success of Equivalenza, it was time for her to launch her second shop Mermaid Cove. Marion worked with lots of local crafters and businesses so that her products are complete unique and reflect the area. Mermaid Cove has a seaside shack feel to it and is a little oasis of all things pretty, colourful and sweet smelling. It’s the kind of shop you just love browsing in, and Marion has handpicked all her stock. She sells the fi nest quality of cosmetics, bath products and accessories – all of which of course are cruelty free and safe to the environment. Many of the products like the CBD range of bath bombs and oils are known for their health-giving properties and through word of mouth Marion has built up a loyal customer base who are always looking for alternative remedies for pain from condition such as fibromyalgia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

HIFU stands for ‘High Intensity Focused Ultrasound’. During this treatment, ultrasound energy is used to stimulate the deep layers which support the skin. In doing so it creates a lifted, more taut appearance and stimulates the body to produce collagen.

Who is suitable for treatment?

A suitable candidate is someone who is aged 30+ who has noticed that the skin on their face or neck has become more lax and wishes to lift and tighten the relevant area. For patients in their 30s it is typically used to stimulate collagen production and hence help delay the ageing process. Patients in their 40s and 50s are the most common age group who have this treatment.

It is also suitable for those aged 60+ provided the degree of laxity is not too great. It is also for those who have had surgery in the past to prolong the effects of surgical facelifts.

Brow lifting Jowl lifting Mid face lifting Nasolabial fold reduction Neck lifting and tightening Overall skin tightening and rejuvenation Chest wrinkles

How long until I see results?

Clients may witness some initial effect, but ultimately lifting and firming will take place over approximately three months, as collagen is renewed and replaced with new, stronger collagen. As this collagen building process continues, improvements can appear for up to six months.*

How long do HIFU results last?

Most people find results last over 1 year, although yearly touch-up treatments are recommended to stay ahead of the ageing process.*

Does it hurt?

Most people do not report pain. There can be slight aching over bony areas or a warm sensation in the skin during treatment.

Is it safe?

Thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide using HIFU technology without significant adverse events. In addition, ultrasound energy has been used safely in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.

Elite Aesthetic Clinic, Glenaden Business Complex, Altnagelvin Business Park, Trench Road, Derry-Londonderry, M: 07712332154 T: 02871349337 W: www.eliteaesthetictreatmentclinic.co.uk E: eliteaestheticclinic@hotmail.co.uk 34 | Local Women | Feature

Can HIFU replace a face lift?

Although HIFU is not a replacement for surgery, it is ideal for people who wish to uplift the face and neck but who are not ready for surgery – either psychologically, financially or logistically. It is considered more of an ‘uplift’ than a ‘facelift’ and can be combined with other non-surgical lifting treatments to further enhance the results.*

What kind of results do you get with HIFU treatment?

HIFU addresses skin that is mild to moderately loose or lax, specifically by reconditioning and renewing the skin from within. HIFU will lift the brow, which in turn reduces excess skin on the eyelids, opens up the eyes, and gives a more refreshed look overall. Patients have reported firmer, more toned skin in others areas of the face and neck as well.

Will I need more than one HIFU treatment?

The majority of patients need only one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen rebuilding process).

This treatment is exclusively available in the North West & Mid Ulster at Elite Aesthetic Clinic. Book your consultation on 077 1233 2154 *client’s results vary

JAYNE TAKES CENTRE STAGE

REVIEW: Kiss Me, Kate at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast

here was a naughtier side to Coleraine actress Jayne Wisener as she took to the stage in Kiss Me, Kate at the Lyric Theatre last month.

Leading lady Lilli Vanessi played by Melle Stewart was incensed by her much younger love rival and the conflict between the two was gloriously bitchy.

As Lois Lane in the Cole Porter musical, Jayne unleashed her Hollywood siren – and she was fab! Here at Local Women we are huge fans of Jayne – she was our first ever cover girl – and we have followed her career from talented schoolgirl to TV star - not to mention her film debut with Johnny Depp. But it’s musical theatre that’s Jayne’s first love and she shone on stage as the glamourous starlet Lois Lane in Kiss Me, Kate.

MAKE THE SWITCH TO FIRMUS Natural Gas Central to Moving Matrix for Linda Giles

O

riginally from west Cork, Linda Giles has been living in Northern Ireland since 1988. Having worked in communications all her life, starting out as a reporter on weekly newspapers, then editor of a range of specialist magazines, a stint at UTV and finally a senior manager in the public health sector, Linda made the decision last year to start transitioning into an early retirement which coincided with an exciting house move. A keen golfer and a member of Banbridge Golf Club, Linda moved just down the road from Dromore, Co Down, to be closer to the golf course, taking the opportunity to downsize to a bungalow in Thorn Heights. Despite selecting the property for its great overall condition, one immediate change she resolved to make was switching the central heating system from oil to natural gas. Linda said: “I wanted the benefits of natural gas from the start, so before I had even moved in I had approached firmus energy to make sure I could get connected and had an installer booked. Then as soon as the house was officially in my name, I organised the switch. It was all very easy.” Switching to gas also freed up plenty of extra space inside and outside Linda’s new home. As part of the switch, the immersion, water tank, bulky oil boiler and the oil tank all were removed. This extra space came in especially handy as Linda was transitioning from a big two-storey house to a smaller bungalow. “I love gas – it’s clean, convenient, consistent, and reliable! Plus, unlike oil, I never run out and don’t have to deal with the hassle of refilling my tank all at once. Instead, I can pay for the gas I use each month, making it easier to track and budget. As I am over 60 I’m also entitled to join a special membership scheme provided by firmus energy called ‘firmus care’. This

entitles customers to a range of special privileges aimed at making life easier. The one I like most is the free boiler safety check every year,” she said. All this convenience and ease means two things for Linda. She has more time to spend on the golf course, where she not only plays but has recently taken on the communications of the club. A close second is walking the other two loves of her life, apart from her son Ross of course, her rescue dogs Bella and Max. She said: “I love coming home from a round of golf or a long walk with my dogs and into a nice warm home. If I want to run a shower or bath, I can use as much water as I need without waiting for it to heat up or worrying about it running out. That’s the great thing about natural gas - you can have as much instant heat and hot water as you need!” So while advocating for women to ‘Get into Golf’, she is also a firm believer that everyone needs to ‘Get into Gas!’ To date, over 95,000 customers have connected to natural gas with firmus energy and are enjoying the benefits that natural gas brings - from constant hot water, to more space in the garden, more efficient boilers to simply being a better choice for the environment.

Homes and businesses interested in making the switch to firmus energy natural gas can find out more by calling 0330 024 9000 or visiting www.firmusenergy.co.uk 46 | Local Women | Feature

AMY’S DREAM COMES TRUE AT ROSIE’S

Rosie’s Closet rolled out the red carpet for a special guest Amy Barthram, who visited as guest of the Rays of Sunshine charity.

B

Pictures by Sean Donegan eautiful Amy Barthram had a day to remember when she visited Rosie’s Closet from her home in Teeside.

Amy’s visit to Ireland’s largest dress shop was organised by the children’s charity which brightens up the lives of seriously ill children by granting wishes. Owner Rosie Farrell said she was delighted to meet Amy and thanked her for choosing Rosie’s Closet as part of her trip to Northern Ireland. And while Amy was trying on her fabulous dresses, she took some time out to model for Local Women. We are sure you’ll agree she looks stunning in every single dress - we can’t wait to see which one she picked! Rosie said: “We were absolutely delighted, privileged and honoured to welcome a very special girl to Rosie’s Closet. “We would like to thank Amy for allowing Rosie’s Closet to be part of her dream day. It is without doubt the proudest day ever for Rosie’s Closet to be chosen by Amy and we hope that she has a wonderful time. “The day was about Amy and the wonderful charity Rays of Sunshine. I would like to say a big thank you to anyone who has donated or who is in any way bringing sunshine to people’s lives. “We hope that the dress Amy picked brings sunshine and happiness to her. We are sincerely delighted that she will get to have the famous picture: “I said yes to the dress at Rosie’s Closet.”

TAKE TWO …with Gemma and Margo Sometimes you need a little bit of extra help – so, supermum Margo Garrett joins her daughter Gemma to give advice across the generations to Local Women readers.

“... All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered.” Dear Gemma and Margo, I hope you don’t mind me writing to you - I am a man, so not your usual reader I’m guessing, but I was hoping you could help me with a problem that has left me heartbroken. Last year my fiancée broke things off with me. We had planned to marry this summer and suddenly out of the blue she ended our relationship. She says there is no one else and she just wants to be alone. All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered. I wanted to marry this woman and start a family and she has just walked away. Why has she done this? I have been very patient with her and given

her space, but I still hope there is a chance. What can I do to make her come back to me?

James

Hi James, As heart breaking as this is, you have to start accepting that she may never come back. You have done the right thing and given her the space and time she wants. You have to start focusing on you now and your own life. You can’t put everything on hold for someone to make up their mind about you. Move on, go on dates, live your life. If you are meant to be, I firmly believe you will be -but for now you have to force yourself to focus on you and move on. Good luck,

Gemma x

Hi James, I’m so very sorry that you have had your hopes and dreams shattered. You have said this happened last year, so she has had time to think about her decision. I think if she really wanted to be with you, she would be. I know it’s very hard to hear this, but you need to move on with your life. Go out with friends and try to be as sociable as circumstances allow. As the saying goes, when one door shuts another opens there will be someone out there for you. Just be yourself and try to enjoy your life. Maybe one day you’ll look back and realise it was a lucky escape. I wish you every happiness for the future.

If you have a problem you can get in touch with Margo and Gemma by email at editor@localwomensnews.com

Donna’s Design Inspiration This month award winning interior designer Donna Monteith chats about some of the designs and projects she is working on Hi Everyone, So here we are in March already - it’s hard to believe. I have been very busy designing and working on projects and navy and grey trends still seem to be very popular with my clients. Recently I have used various styles and textures as this colour can be used in both classic and contemporary settings. I have also designed some stunning damask navy and grey curtains in designer fabric by Zinc - they are

showcasing in the studio at present and they really are statement curtains. When they are teamed with accent lamps in navy and white and occasional or dining chairs, they really make an elegant hall, dining space or bedroom! Wallpapers of texture and contrast paint choices are also important and there are many tones of grey that compliment navy. My favourite is Farrow and Ball Manor House grey, their Pavilion grey and even softer again - Cornforth white. For those who like an accent colour - teal, burnt orange, white and metallic silver in the right places would look great. Until next month!

riveways have become a multifunctional part of the modern home. As well as creating a parking facility, a well landscaped block paved driveway

enhances the style and value of a property and provides a safe play area for children. Tobermore block paving products are available in a variety of styles and colours, are highly durable, cost-effective and require little maintenance. Whether your house is contemporary or traditional, we have a paving range that can enhance the appearance and character of your home whilst meeting your budget. ‘Artro’ is the latest block paving range to be released by Tobermore. A linear block, the Artro range draws inspiration from the European clay paver style which has become more popular in recent years. With creativity at its core, Artro’s strength lies in its ability to adapt its look depending on the colour,

laying pattern or jointing material used. Artro can be laid in either a linear or herringbone pattern allowing you to explore multiple design options. Depending on how linear paving is laid, it can give the illusion of greater depth which can bring style to a small outdoor area. You can also combine Artro with Tobermore’s extensive range of edging and kerbs to add additional character to each individual paving scheme. The Artro range includes seven different colour variations ranging from warm tones, ideal for more traditional settings, to cool greys, perfect for complementing contemporary designs. Cyprus – a Dream Holiday destination

Heather Fielding, Managing Director at Gallagher Travel

Heather Fielding looks at what Cyprus has to offer as a great holiday destination

H

opefully the worst of the winter months are now behind us and we can say goodbye to the various storms that have disrupted travel over the last few weeks. We are always working seasons ahead and have just seen the launch of Summer 2021 by Jet2holidays so currently we are selling Winter 19/20, Summer 2020, Winter 2020/2021 and Summer 2021! Christmas and New Year 2020/2021 are selling well at the minute with a few ski destinations already sold out for New Year! It is always exciting to see new seasons go on sale to see what new destinations we will have to Pantachou beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus sell. With the collapse of Thomas Cook we lost quite a few destinations so we were delighted to see the return of the Larnaca flight in Cyprus for Summer 2021. Though it is not probably the first pick when it comes to travel destinations (due to its distance from other European countries and the fact that it is an island so you really cannot just ‘hop’ there anytime you want), once you actually get there, you will probably ask yourself why you haven’t visited Cyprus much earlier - beautiful beaches, wild parties, delicious cuisine are just a small part of exciting stuff which Cyprus offers. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and its beaches are absolutely amazing. A crystal clear sea along with tidy and neat beaches will make you feel like you are in a paradise on earth. And when you add the fact that the most of the year is sunny, you’ll get the recipe for an unforgettable experience. The most popular beaches are those in Ayia Napa, but the one that is the most interesting is the beach in Paphos with the famous ‘Aphrodite’s Rock’.

The legend says that the birth of the Greek goddess happened exactly on this beach, more precisely, that she rose from the sea which surrounds the rock. As you may know, Cyprus’s population mostly consists of Greeks (78%) and around 18% of the population make Turks. Very particular is the case of Nicosia which is the only divided capital in the world. The southern part of Nicosia is Greek and the northern part is mostly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots. On top of that, Turks have proclaimed an independent state named Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is only recognized by Turkey. So in some way you could say you actually visited two countries, not just one! Since Cyprus is a country of ethnic Turks and Greeks (for the most part), it is obvious that the majority of Cypriot cuisine will consist of Turkish and Greek dishes. Their favourite starter dish is meze which consists of several different smaller dishes (up to 20 of them!), mostly meat and fish dishes with vegetables. Try spicy spicy Loukaniko sausages and various dips like Tahini (sesame dip) or Skordalia (garlic and potato dip). Their local soft cheese

Here are my top five reasons to book your holiday early. Travelling during school holidays. If travelling during peak time, i.e when the kids are off school, the earlier you book the better. Special offers are very limited during these periods so usually the earlier you book the better value you receive.

Have specific requirements. Are you looking for something in particular, a 3 bedroom apartment, a good hotel on the beach or one of the top family properties with excellent kids facilities? Then remember these will get booked well in advance so make sure you do the same if you have specific requirements.

Get the best choice Take advantage of the choices available. With most airlines on sale eleven months in advance you may find that you can get ten days for the price of seven or better flight times without paying large supplements. Many hotels offer early booking offers too with savings of between 10-20% if booking early.

Makes budgeting easier. Use your holiday as a savings plan. When booking just pay an initial deposit and pay the balance off monthly. It will be easier to budget throughout the year and avoids one large payment twelve weeks before departure.

Have something to look forward to. It’s nice to have your holiday booked in advance and have something to look forward to. It makes it easier to plan other things and takes away the stress of worrying that you might not find a holiday at the last minute.

is called halloumi and locals like to eat it grilled. As for the desserts, Cypriots love eating pudding pies, such as galaktoboureko or mahalepi, corn pudding malahapi covered in rose syrup. Besides delicious dishes, don’t forget to try their sweet dessert wine called Commandaria which goes great with hard cheeses. Hard liquor like ouzo, anise brandy and filfar are definitely worth tasting. Cyprus is a very popular destination amongst young people because during summer the nightlife in Cyprus is on fire! Ayia Napa is the unofficial ‘party capital’ and some of the nightclubs are open for the entire year. However, the best parties are held from June to August. Every day there are open air stages and worldwide famous DJs who will entertain you until the sunrise! Also, did you know that the main square in Ayia Napa becomes an open air party during summer, called Circus Square? How cool is that! The history of Cyprus is more than 10 000 years old and many monuments witness the cultural change over the past centuries.

Onasagorou Street is a popular tourist attraction in Nicosia. The best ‘trip’ to the past can be found in the Cyprus Museum in the capital, Nicosia. The museum has an enviable collection of artefacts dating back to the Neolithic and Byzantine age. Besides ancient Greek ruins like Amathus and Korion in Limassol and old Turkish mosques, there are even traces of old Venetian culture such as the Venetian walls in Nicosia which are considered to be the best example of ideal Renaissance city. Cyprus is known to be among the safest countries in Europe due to its low crime rate. According to Eurostat statistics, Cyprus has the lowest number of recorded crimes, which include robberies and violent crimes. Since Cyprus is an island, one would not expect a very good road network, however, here we have quite the opposite situation. For example, you can get from Nicosia to Limassol in just one hour via state motorway. And what’s best, all of the bigger cities on the island can be reached within two hours or less. This is excellent news for those who like to explore on their own, because in this case it is a lot easier and more economic to rent a car and to do the round trip by yourself. Climate in Cyprus is one of the most stable and warmest climates in Europe and the average annual temperature is 24 °C. This means that Cyprus has warm winters with a very small number of rainy days and summers are mostly dry and hot.

Until next month,

CATWALK TRENDS FOR SPRING SUMMER 2020

Ann Doyle, owner of Gasp Boutique has her finger on the pulse of fashion Here we are again ladies - another month has swiftly passed us by and we are into the ‘spring’ of things here in Gasp for the month of March. Just to take your minds off winter with those cosy coats and boots for a second I decided this month to give you a little insight to what was trending on the catwalks for the spring/summer season. I know it’s hard to visualise light dresses and false tan when the majority of us are still bundled up in our warm cosy jumpers - but just to keep you in the know, it helps to get ahead with what’s trending. From the runways of Caroline Herrera, Miu Miu, Chanel, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and many more designers there are so many trends I want to tell you about. Get ready to don some ruffles, puffed sleeves, polka dots, artisanal crochet designs, 60s disco collars and 60s wallpaper prints, couture HERE WE GO ! feathers, hot pants, DRAWSTRINGS ruffles, bold neon’s and From the New York fashion week right through much more. to London, Milan and Paris we have seen huge Here is a small list I trends coming through. For a start designers have put together for added drawstrings to anoraks, jumpsuits, you as I welcome you coats, and dresses for a touch of sportiness. to a new decade of fashion inspiration. These Anyone can wear this leisure design, even if

trends are big, bold and you’ve never played a sport in your life ladies, statement-making. it still comes across to be a comfy casual look.

POLKA DOTS

I bet you have always thought that large polka dots are only worn by your children well think again. The Spring/ Summer 2020 runways were chock full of very large polka dots, big and bold ones to! There is no such thing as too much if you are brave enough to wear them that is.

WRAPPED ANKLES

If you’ve been keeping an eye out in the fashion magazines styling tips over the last couple of months, you’ll have noticed that several have been tying their boot straps around their ankles. Well ladies for this summer the trend is tying your sandal straps around your trousers. This is going to be lapped up this season, I just hope those ties are very tight when you are walking down English Street on your way to see us here in Gasp and they don’t trip you up!!!

SHEER LAYERS

Sheer blouses, tops, dresses, layer them all on top of each other, whatever your style is you can surly experiment with these fabrics. It’s a great way to play around with these sheer silhouettes and textures so whether you layer a sheer shirt, a top, a vest or go all out with a sheer dress you will look sheerfull.

NEON GREEN

We all know neon has been (and will continue to be) very trendy but pay special attention to the new trend of bright green hue. It’s making a huge splash of colour on the runways - wow this is so bright for my eyes, I just hope we get the weather to enjoy this vibrant shade.

PUFFED SLEEVES

We saw a revival of this trend last year, but in 2020 it’s time to make way - both mentally and physically for the puffed sleeve. Whether the puff is focussed on your shoulder, or more gradually down your arm, the puff is so much bigger. I’m not too sure if I could wear this size puff down English Street I would knock everyone out!

DISCO COLLAR

Bringing back those 60s vibes onto the catwalk this season was the disco collar! Yip, you heard it right - it’s the Saturday night fever vibes as the wide collar made a surprise comeback on the spring 2020 runways. Modernised on coats, jackets, shirts, combined with contrasting colours to make it really stand out, and why not - what’s the point of a super collar if you can’t really see it! This look is getting me in the mood to buy a disco ball!

CROCHET

Crochet is getting a modern update this spring, with ultra-feminine dresses and evening wear that feels modern with a special touch of your Granny’s handmade crochet expertise! The fashion industry has been looking for

ways to become more sustainable, so this season on the runway this is a “trend” that embraces a slow, handmade technique that can be kept and worn with renewability. I love the crochet look but it seems more appealing to me for the summer rather than the winter.

HOTPANTS

Ladies root into your wardrobes, I’m sure you will all have a pair of hot pants stuffed away somewhere. Hot pants have made a serious comeback on the spring 2020 runway from itsy bitsy knit shorts, cut off denims and leather Chanel styled the look worn with black tights you can also style them with leggings add a pair them knee-high boots or pumps, anything goes with the hot pants craze! Somehow I don’t think a pair of these would suit me- I reckon I will stick to my full length pants! That’s all for this month ladies, I hope you have all enjoyed my column Until next month Regards

Ann Doyle

NEW YORK, NEW YORK FOR CGS Coleraine Grammar Choir pupils and staff enjoyed the bright lights of the Big Apple as they performed at the Carnegie Hall

A

total of 38 pupils and four staff from Coleraine Grammar School travelled to New York on Thursday, January 16 to sing in the Carnegie Hall at the 20th anniversary of Sir Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’. Following a year of fundraising by parents and support from the local community the choir had finally made it to the streets of Manhattan and the bright lights of Times Square. The first few days were filled with sightseeing and shopping. For many, seeing ‘Hamilton’ at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway was a highlight, ƒ Coleraine Grammar School Choir but they also visited the Empire State The group managed to tick a few more Building, the 9/11 Museum, the One World Observatory and the Statue of tourist boxes before getting to Carnegie Hall by attending a NY Knicks game in Liberty before a note had been sung! The choir were kept backstage during the first half of the concert then it was their turn just after 8pm. The 279 strong choir raised their standards and eclipsed all previous efforts to astound the audience and earn a standing ovation. It was a truly moving experience, particularly for the staff and parents in the audience. The Coleraine Grammar School choir had done their school, town and country proud at the 20th anniversary concert of this very popular piece of music – allegedly performed on average twice a week for the past 20 years! Sadly, the trip was almost over. As the sun shone in Manhattan and temperatures started to rise the group took to the ice of the Wollman Rink in Central Park. It was a beautiful setting to have some fun and contemplate the previous night’s concert. The trip was a wonderful experience for all the pupils and staff involved. Lots of laughs, a few tears but immense pride in completing the journey to Carnegie Hall. Thanks again to all the parents and friends who have organised events and supported the fundraising activities during this past year and well done to the 38 pupils whose dreams became reality on January 20, 2020. Until the next time!

Exercise Benefits for Your Feet!

Exercising regularly has loads of benefits; and different kinds of exercises impact different parts of our body. SMART NEUROMUSCULAR CONNECTIONS Exercises like 'toe crunches', 'Big Toe Down' and balancing on a single leg facilitates the development of smart neuromuscular connections within the feet. Having smart feet means you will have a strong base, a healthy kinetic chain and leads towards better functioning within the body. 3. REDUCE STRAIN INJURIES Doing flexibility exercises such as calf stretching helps in reducing different forms of strain injuries. 4. NEW COLUMN BY LORI GATSI-BARNETT

What Women Want

Local Women welcomes Lori Gatsi-Barnett on board as a columnist discussing various women’s matters

H

ello Local Women readers, My name is Lori Gatsi-Barnett and over the coming months I will be discussing a number of different issues affecting women.

is nothing more inspiring than knowing your purpose and waking up everyday to live it out.

First let me tell you a little bit about myself and what I do.

It’s not about unrealistic expectations, it’s about honesty - accepting that some you win and sometimes you could lose it all. However, just because everything doesn’t turn out the way you want it certainly doesn’t spell disaster, it’s an opportunity to start over and make it work for yourself.

I’ve learnt being a grown up takes some responsibility, resilience and mostly self belief when all else fails.

I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, the eldest and the only girl alongside my three brothers. I lived and studied in the Pennsylvania US and I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world and experience diversity in many forms. Having lived in London initially, I ‘blew in’ to Belfast, and now 14 years later I am a business owner of L’Esense Group Ltd, a social entrepreneur, motivational speaker and founder of the JoinHer Network. I am also the very proud Mama to my 14-year old, Arianna. Diversity has always been a part of my life from an early age, primarily because of my parents and their professional lives which often included us. JoinHer came about in my bedside journal for years - I suppose waiting for the day I would be convinced to share it and bring it to life.

So I’m still learning and I make every victory count.

Review: Pure Luxury At The

GRAND CENTRAL

The new Shop & Savour menu at the Grand Central Hotel is the ultimate treat for a little affordable weeknight decadence.

T

here something about the Grand Central Hotel that feels so luxurious. It’s hard to believe the hotel is a relatively recent addition to Belfast because it feels like such a classic mixing grandeur with glamour. You’ll have seen the famous Observatory Bar of course, it’s a favourite on social media with its unrivalled views over the city skyline. But the rest of the hotel is just as stunning with beautiful modern interiors and a host of options for dining and drinking. Tonight, we are off to dinner at the Seahorse Restaurant on the hotel’s first floor which has a new Shop & Savour three course menu with wine pairings, created by the hotel’s Executive Head Chef, Damian Tumilty using the very best of local provenance.
