AUSTRALIA'S MOST WANTED SEE OUR REVIEW OF THIS WINE ON PAGE99
SAUVIGNON BLANC
This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley Eastern Australia from our own vineyards. Following delivery and crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Sauvignon Blanc juice was cold settled and racked. An aromatic yeast was used for inocculation and this parcel was cool fermented for 7 days. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant showing lovely tropical fruit flavours with a hint of typical herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc characters.
CHARDONNAY
The fruit for the Kelly’s Patch Chardonnay was sourced from the Goulburn Valley on the vineyards neighbouring the winery. This region has long, warm sunny days and mild evening temperatures which are perfect for the growing of good quality Chardonnay. The grapes were harvested during the cool of the night to maintain fruit freshness and gently pressed to minimise phenolic characters. The wine was fermented in various parcels, with a small portion receiving careful oak treatment, with extended lees contact to build structure yet retain good fruit balance.
PINOT GRIGIO
This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley and South East Australia from a combination of our own vineyards and our contract growers. Following crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Pinot Grigio juice is cold settled and racked clean ready for fermentation. An aromatic yeast was used for inoculation and the juice is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant displaying applesand pears with floral spicy notes. The palate is clean, displaying green crunchy fruit with a crisp long finish.
MERLOT
The grapes for this Merlot were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout. Much of Merlot’s popularity is derived from its juicy flavours, and mellow mouth feel. Therefore, this wine was fermented in rotary fermenters, which helped bring out the wonderful colour and flavours, but ensured that the tannins were soft and fine. Minimal oak handling was also an important feature inclusion of the winemaking allowing for the fruit to be the primary feature of this wine. The of some central Victorian fruit in the blend has further intensified both the colour and flavour, creating a wine of increased complexity and quality.
SHIRAZ
The grapes for this Shiraz were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout, all of which help to create the signature McPherson style. Fermentation took place in sweeping arm red fermenters, giving the wine a denser, richer colour and allowing for gentle flavour extraction. Softer tannins are also a result of this process, an important feature of the McPherson Shiraz style. Careful attention was also paid to the oak selection for the Shiraz. This wine was aged on American oak for approximately 8 months, giving the wine a noticeable, but not an excessive oak influence. The inclusion of some central Victorian fruit into the blend has boosted both the colour.
KELLY’S GANG SHIRAZ
Kelly’s Gang Shiraz is bold and full of flavour. The nose displays sweet plums, cassis, chocolate and spice. The exuberant palate delivers ripe berry fruit along with a touch of pepper and spice. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 3-4 years. Enjoy with pizza, pasta or your favourite BBQ dish.
KELLY’S GANG SAUVIGNON BLANC
Kelly’s Gang Sauvignon Blanc is vibrant and refreshing. The nose displays lifted passionfruit and citrus notes. The fruit forward palate delivers ripe fruit flavours balanced by some lovely crisp acidity on the finish. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 2-3 years. Enjoy with salads or your favourite seafood dish.

“So, what have you been up to?” If I promise to stop asking you this, will you stop asking me? Because, for the last few months the answer has been the same - and for the foreseeable future, I can’t see any change. I’m not doing anything, nothing at all - unless watching Netflix and making excuses not to go for a walk count as activities!
Editor Kim Kelly enjoying Linwoods Crunchy Seed Clusters
Perhaps it’s because of the endless boredom of lockdown that I did a terrible thing – I box dyed my hair! Well, in fact I box bleached my hair. I would like to personally apologise to every hairdresser who has ever advertised in Local Women. I now realise that your job is much more technical than I thought. You are complete experts and professionals. You told me not to do it – but I ignored you and went ahead. Now I have ginger roots and my hair is the texture of straw – whoops! It’s going to be one heck of a job to fix when lockdown ends. In the meantime, there’s always hats! I’m really enjoying all your lockdown weddings – you will see a few in this month’s magazine. There’s something so lovely about people who get married during these difficult times. It really brightens up the dark days. I know your weddings are smaller than you planned but they are still beautiful and memorable, and I just love seeing your pictures and hearing your stories. Keep sending in your pictures, we print every wedding or civil partnership you send us. Finally, this month, in preparation for ‘normal life’ resuming I decided to get healthy, after realising that a diet of McDonalds and Domino’s really isn’t doing me any favours. Luckily Linwoods came to my rescue with their new range of Crunchy Seed Clusters. These are healthy ‘toppers’ packed full of goodness which you can pour over your cereal, porridge or yoghurt. They come in three delicious varieties, Flaxseed and Cranberries, Pumpkin and Chia Seed and Flaxseed and Nuts. They are a great way to start the day and have great healthy benefits as well as tasting great. Until next month,

“BRING OUT THE BEST WITH PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT” Newly appointed principal of Magherafelt High School and mum of two teenagers, Grace Anderson, introduces herself to Local Women readers and discusses the lessons learned by both teachers and pupils during the pandemic.
I
began teaching in an integrated post-primary in Ballymena. Inspired by visionary principals, I learned how to set high standards and to build capacity for improvement, in myself and my colleagues. I was appointed to Senior Leadership nine years later and relished the opportunities for challenge. I completed the Professional Qualification In Headship in 2015 and after that, became Head of Junior School with almost 500 students in my charge. My personal and professional life converged in 2017 when my daughter joined my school in Year 8. I had the privilege of watching her settle in, seeing the little things that the other parents missed. When my son also joined my school two years later, I became the mum that could hear the stories travelling to and from school and be ‘on tap’ when they forgot lunch money. It offered the best of both worlds - as a parent as I could see my children grow and work ‘guilt-free’ at the same time. In March 2020, a colleague shared an advertisement for Principal of Magherafelt High School, knowing it would appeal to me with its family feel and strong community spirit. After plenty of soulsearching and prayer, I applied. Covid-19

I think in education and business, people can sometimes misconstrue effort and determination and almost see it negatively. I recall a colleague once telling me that I must have a very understanding husband as I was so committed to my work and often stayed behind when I was trying to catch up on admin or contact parents. The pandemic has also really enabled us to see other people’s perspectives. The teachers became ‘stay at home parents’ and the parents became ‘kitchen-desk teachers.’ The most important lesson we should learn is that we are all different but with praise and encouragement, we can bring out the best in ourselves, our colleagues and most importantly, our children.

As spring arrives, it’s time to create the space you have always wanted and extend your living space outdoors with a garden studio. Restrictions on movement mean that we are staying at home more and really taking a look at our living spaces and how to get the most from them. So, it’s not surprising that the biggest home trend for 2021 is the garden studio. Also known as a garden room, cabin, luxury shed, or an outdoor room, at Luxury Garden Studios they guarantee to make your dream of more space a reality. In the past year we have seen an incredible amount of change and of course this is reflected in how we live our lives. Now that we spend more time at home, we need spaces to work, to work out, to socialise with direct family – or just a space to relax and chill out. For many, a home extension is just not a realistic or practical option and often the idea of a separate ‘close to nature’ studio is much more appealing. And with no planning permission required and a quick turnaround, a garden studio offers a fantastic addition to your home. Luxury Garden Studios offer a truly bespoke solution. Their team of experts work with you from the early planning stages to final installation and are with you every step of the way. They have over 40 years in the building trade and use their own tradesmen so they can guarantee completion dates on their projects. Whether you want a minimalist feel or a luxury look, they can offer you any finish you require. Working with Luxury Garden Studios takes the hassle out of your build as they manage all aspects of the project – all you have to do is tell them what you want. They have created studios for all kinds of clients, from business owners who want to operate close to home, to families looking for a child friendly play space or a couple looking for a luxury room for their hot tub. As we get ready for summer, let’s take a look at what Luxury Garden Studios can offer.
HOW MUCH ROOM DO YOU NEED FOR AN OUTDOOR STUDIO? The advantage of choosing Luxury Garden Studios is that we create your perfect outside experience based on the space available. We have completed garden rooms ranging from 3m X 3m to 10m x 12m and most sizes in between.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Costs are all dependent on the quality of the finish of each individual studio and if it is a standard build or turnkey finish. We do not offer finance ourselves, but we do offer a flexible payment structure including deposit and staged payments. Here are some indicative costs of some our most common studio requests: 3m x 3m £10750 + VAT 6m x 3.5m £14885 + VAT 8.5m x 3.5m £17885 + VAT
DO YOU NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?
CAN THEY BE FULLY PLUMBED WITH A BATHROOM?
A garden room is classified as an outbuilding, so it doesn't need to be granted planning permission, as long as it follows some very specific criteria, like the total area, the roof height etc. The majority of garden rooms by their nature are small enough to not exceed these parameters.
Absolutely, and this is something we can offer. We can connect to the services of the property to access the fresh water and waste.
HOW DO YOU HEAT THEM? In our standard finish we leave power points at pre agreed positions suitable for hanging oil filled radiators or similar, but with our turnkey packages we install these also.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A GARDEN STUDIO AND IS IT MESSY?
DO PEOPLE RUN BUSINESSES FROM THEM?
At Luxury Garden Studios, we have a purpose-built factory which enables us to construct the units off site then deliver and install within two hours. This depends on access and as this is not always possible, we can also build on site with completion time based on size and style, but usually no more than three days.
This is becoming increasingly popular, especially within the professional services and health and beauty industries. If someone has the room at their home to install a studio, they should look at the viability of it in comparison to renting a town centre premises.
We use ground screws to install where possible to reduce any element of digging around the garden but again when this is not suitable other methods are used which may require some groundwork. However, we always strive to minimise disruption to the garden and reinstate it as best we can before leaving.
Example: For someone who rents a town centre salon in Northern Ireland:
CAN YOU HAVE IT EXACTLY THE WAY YOU WANT IT - OR IS THERE A STANDARD FINISH?
Monthly cost – Rent & Rates £850
We pride ourselves on our ability to meet any demand, but we do have a standard finish for every studio that we complete.
Studio install - £17,885 (8.5m x 3.5m)
This includes but is not limited to light gauge steel frame, external composite cladding, uPVC windows and doors, insulated floor and walls, internal painting, laminate floor throughout, LED spotlights and a range of power points.
Total Cost £22,885
Annual Cost - £10,200 – (Excluding electric / heat) 5-year cost £51,000 Salon fit out - £5,000 (treatment beds / sinks etc) Return on Investment – 27 months
WHAT DO PEOPLE USE GARDEN STUDIOS FOR?
HOW SOON CAN I GET ONE?
They really are multi-purpose and we have completed projects which are used as: home gyms, home offices, business headquarters, bar and pool rooms, hair and beauty salons, self-contained accommodation, and to house golf simulators.
At this time of year as we approach the much welcomed longer and warmer evenings, everyone wants to have a garden room. This means we currently aim to achieve a 6-to-8-week completion date from confirmation of order.
CAN YOU SLEEP IN THEM AND USE THEM LIKE A SPARE ROOM?
HOW DO THEY WITHSTAND OUR WEATHER?
A garden room can be used for any purpose including self-contained accommodation, which can include a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom which we offer as a turnkey package.
All our studios are completed with a light gauge steel fame and a composite cladding external finish. The frame has a 20-year structural guarantee, and the maintenance free external cladding does not, unlike wood, absorb water and therefore remains structurally sound and stable. As an alternative to natural wood, composite offers a solution that is environmentally friendly, sustainable, and safe, but without the flaws and setbacks of natural wood products.
With our 40 years' experience in the construction industry, we have the unique ability to take a project from start to finish without sub-contracting or relying on tradespeople to carry out any additional works. This allows us to confidently predict contract delivery schedules and pricing schedules.

SISTER ACT!
Meet super successful camogie-playing duo Ciara and Leanne Donnelly from Eglish, who can’t wait to get back to their winning ways.
C
iara and Leanne Donnelly from Eglish are counting down the days until lockdown is over.
Ciara and Leanne Donnelly from Eglish
The sisters, who are champion camogie players, usually look forward to the brighter nights because they can get out onto the field for some training. This year of course things are a little different and they haven’t played since the All-Ireland final with Armagh at the beginning of December. Over the past few years Ciara, 30, a teacher, and Leanne, a 21-yearold planning student at Queen’s have dedicated most of their free time to the sport they love, often playing alongside each other in matches. Ciara, who plays camogie for Eglish and Armagh and football for Killeeshil, and Leanne, who plays for Eglish, Armagh and Queen’s, are both extremely talented and very successful. In fact, their lives are dominated by camogie – and they wouldn’t have it any other way. For it is the friendships they have made and the sense of belonging they have found, that makes their sport so important to them. Here the talented duo talk to Local Women about their successes, their motivation and how they would like to encourage ladies from all backgrounds to get involved with a local team.
YOU ARE BOTH VERY SUCCESSFUL – WHAT WINS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? CIARA: The ones where both of my sisters were playing alongside me, and our three Ulster titles with Eglish were pretty special. Leanne was probably one of the youngest on the field and was player of the match for two out of three of them. Proud sister moment! I am also pretty proud of a win where I wasn’t playing. I coached Leanne and her school team when they won the Ulster Schools final in 2017. It was the first title win in camogie for St Catherine’s, Armagh for a number of years. LEANNE: Winning the Intermediate Ulster with Eglish in 2015 alongside my two sisters and winning an Ulster Senior school title with St Catherine’s with Ciara as the coach. The most recent win I am most proud of is winning the All-Ireland Junior with Armagh in December past.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST SUCCESSES? CIARA: The most recent with Armagh was pretty special, winning an All-Ireland at any level is a day to remember.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING CAMOGIE?
CIARA: I started playing for a club in Armagh called Granemore, that’s where I grew up. I didn’t go to the local school, so I started a little later LEANNE: Winning the intermediate All-Ireland semi-final with Eglish than everyone else. It was a great way to make friends and I enjoyed against Galtir and scoring 1.3 to reach the club All-Ireland final in learning new skills. I am so grateful to those in Granemore that taught Croke Park. me the skills of camogie as it was the foundations that allow me to play at the level I do today. HOW HAS YOUR TRAINING BEEN OVER LOCKDOWN? CIARA: I was teaching in Doha when the first lockdown hit. I was playing camogie and football out there. It was pretty strict for the first few months and there was no collective training, it was home workouts and running to keep my fitness up. I got home a month earlier than originally planned and that’s when I joined back with Armagh. We have been doing Zoom fitness sessions which seemed strange to begin with but it’s now the norm.
LEANNE: For as long as I can remember, as soon as I could walk, a stick was put in my hand. I didn’t really have much of a choice, as my sisters both played the sport!
DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST MATCH?
CIARA: I don’t actually remember my first match, I’m sure it wasn’t a pretty sight! But the one match I will always remember from when I was maybe 12 or 13 years old was a Feile game. Feile was a one-day LEANNE: I’ve kept it simple by just running a couple of 5ks a week along tournament within a county to determine who should represent the with doing a few workouts at home. county at the All-Ireland Feile competition. Armagh at my age group when we grew up were Keady and Ballymacnab. We beat the Nab in the semi-final of the competition after extra time, and the celebrations were crazy. It was the first time I had ever been on a team that beat them. An hour later we were beaten by Keady in the final, but we took away all the positives from that day. LEANNE: I can’t remember the first time I lifted a stick, but my fondest memory is playing at under 8s. The skirt was like a dress on me, running round the field after the soft touch ball.
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT AS A CHILD? CIARA: I would say the social aspect of it. No matter what age you are, when you go to play a sport you love with good friends, it’s a release from whatever is going on. LEANNE: I enjoyed getting out of the house and meeting new friends, who became friends for life.
HOW BIG A PART DOES SPORT PLAY IN YOUR LIFE? CIARA: Sport for me is massive, it’s my outlet
from any stresses in life. When I was 22, I went to live in Boston and played football for a whole summer, it was a fab experience. Maybe not so much the part where I lived in a 3-bedroom apartment with 13 girls, but it’s a time I’ll always remember. I have made friends for life from all the teams I’ve played with over the years.

CREATING FAMILIES WITH ACTION FOR CHILDREN
Have you ever thought about becoming a foster parent? Action for Children would like to hear from you and is here to support your journey every step of the way. Every year, Action For Children helps scores of children across Northern Ireland find safe and loving foster homes. But the need for foster carers has never been greater with many children of all ages currently in care waiting to find placements. Avery Bowser is Children’s Services Manager with Action for Children’s fostering service in Northern Ireland and he is proud of the work the organisation does to match young people with carers and support them on their journey. He is keen to encourage a new generation of foster carers to open their hearts and homes to children who need love and stability. Avery explains: “We need carers from all walks of life. Is this something you could do? Do you know someone who would be a good foster carer?
kinds of foster parents. “As long as you are over 21, have a spare room and the motivation to become a carer, we can consider your application.” Avery is keen to stress that there are many different types of placements available. Some children need a full-time home, others need a few days per month support, while some may need a place to stay just for a short time. Sometimes young mums need a home where they can live with their baby and receive support or perhaps siblings need a placement where they can live together. Some children need to be the only child in the house or sometimes they will flourish being part of a traditional family group.

“FOSTERING IS THE BEST THING I’VE DONE”
Nicky Peachey considered fostering for many years until she eventually took the plunge and applied to Action for Children. Now she is a foster mum to a little boy and says it’s the most wonderful and rewarding experience. When Carrickfergus woman Nicky Peachey first met her foster son, it was immediately clear to her that this was a perfect match.
to overnights and then a weekend visit. “By the time he was ready to move in with me, we knew each other well and it wasn’t a difficult transition. The support I was offered from Action for Children was second to none. I know people worry that they will be thrown in at the deep end, but this is not the case at all. My social worker is nothing short of amazing.”
After months of training and preparation by Action for Children to become a foster parent, Nicky was matched with an eight-year-old boy – however, despite her delight, she was a little nervous about what lay ahead. But she says she felt an immediate connection with the little boy who had been carefully matched with her, taking both her and her soon-to-be foster son’s individual circumstances into account.
All children’s circumstances are unique, some stay with foster carers close to their home, others move to a new area for a fresh start. Some retain links with their birth families while others aren’t in regular contact with their birth parents.
Her social worker at Action for Children had worked closely with her foster son’s social worker to ensure the best fit possible for both mum and son – and their painstaking work paid off.
In Nicky’s case, her son changed schools when he came to live with her, although he only got one term at his new school before lockdown meant she now homeschools him.
Nicky explains: “It was the strangest thing but absolutely wonderful. I met him and we just clicked, and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, he even looks like me!’
Before lockdown Nicky was self-employed as a personal trainer, something she will continue when the restrictions end.
“I can honestly say this is the best thing I ƒ Nicky says fostering is the best have ever done. I have been good for thing she’s ever done him and he has been good for me. Age, marital status, or sexuality are no barrier to being a good foster parent - in fact sometimes applicants who aren’t in a relationship can be the perfect match for a particular child’s needs.
They both quickly adapted to their new lives and enjoyed getting to know each other. Nicky has an extended family who have welcomed her foster son with open arms, and they have spent the last few months making happy memories together. Nicky says: “Probably the standout for me was Christmas. We did the whole Christmas experience from hot chocolate and pajamas on Christmas Eve to Santa on Christmas Day. It was just fantastic, and I definitely enjoyed it as much as he did.” The future is bright for Nicky and her foster son. He is thriving in his new environment, doing well with his schoolwork, and building relationships with his new family. He still has contact with his birth family and enjoys visits every few weeks. For Nicky fostering is a “no brainer!” And she says that if you have ever thought about it, now is the time to go for it.

would have coped at all well. I’m glad that we didn’t know what was ahead of us all. Mother’s Day 2020 was one of the first celebrations that was disrupted by the pandemic, when instead of our meals out and flowers, we were showered with love in the form of hand drawn cards and home cooked meals. Now, nearly a full year on, what have we all learnt about ourselves? Personally, I have learnt a lot, not just about myself but about the needs of my kids and family as well. I have treasured our time together as a unit having now been through all four seasons in lockdown. I’ve watched them plant vegetables, make dens, fly kites and make snowmen during the pandemic and I can’t help but feel that this has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for us all to slow down and appreciate the smaller things in life. I know my children and their needs so much more than before and have strengthened my bond with them. I’ve also watched them build their own bond with each other, which I hope will stand by them the rest of their lives. Of course, there have been days when I have wanted to run for

and had ended up in ICU with lung problems and sepsis. My husband is a pharmacist in the hospital and worked throughout. “Initially we enjoyed lockdown and despite missing normality, we loved walks, cycling, gardening etc. I got back to work, and kids settled into school great. The second wave wasn’t as much fun as we knew a few people who tragically died and emotionally felt more drained and the winter days weren’t as friendly. “In hindsight we’ve are so thankful we all kept well. We have Pamela Anderson with her wonderful children their educational needs better and lots of bonding time. We had lots of opportunities- we got involved in a local community litter pick and saw first-hand the litter problem which helped the kids to learn practically about our environment. “I found the second lock down much harder. The worst part was the ‘mummy guilt.’ This started when kids were off for the second time and I was back at work trying to keep my own business going. When I was at work, I was guilty because I wasn’t at home, when I was at home, I was guilty about others having to pick up the slack at work. It has really affected my mental health, but I’m lucky to have a good support network. I have learned so much during this pandemic - to appreciate all the little things in life, like hugging your mum, or popping to the shops for milk! “Also, I have learned to make time for self-care and try not to feel ‘mum guilt.’ My best is good enough because no matter what my kids come first . Lynne McIlmoyle from Castledawson is a frontline working mummy of two. She writes: “We started lockdown when I was on night duty. I am so grateful for my beautiful little family as we keep each other lifted and the one thing we all look forward to is spending priceless time with friends who we have missed so much.” Finally, I spoke with Victoria Brown a mum of five children who gave birth to twins during the pandemic. She describes her experience: “At the start of the very first lockdown last year I faced home schooling my two oldest daughters. who at the time were in P5 and P3, trying to entertain my then 3-year-old whilst pregnant with twins! Initially I was daunted at the prospect of potentially months of remote learning but once we got into the new routine, we managed quite well mostly There were definitely some challenging times, especially with a difficult pregnancy thrown into the mix. Following the twins’ birth in August 2020, I had to stay in hospital much longer than I’d planned and my daughters couldn’t visit due to the restrictions. Not physically seeing my children from the Thursday night when I tucked them into bed until the Monday when I got home was the hardest thing I faced during lockdown. The lockdowns have been challenging for us as adults but definitely more so for our children not being able to see their friends, play sports or go for days out. It’s been difficult not being able to take the twins to see family, they’ve only seen their grandparents a handful of times since they were born. “What I’ve learnt over the last year through all the lockdowns is to slow down and enjoy the little things and appreciate the extra time with my family. Before lockdown we had a very busy schedule between school runs, the girls’ sport and social activities and church meetings. Life was hectic but with all those closed we are currently enjoying a slower pace of life and making memories together.” I think we can all agree that although there have been difficult times during the past year, one common lesson has been learnt by all of us - the importance of slowing down and appreciating our family. Take care,

Joanna Denton
Find your people –
but choose them well
After suffering two work-related burnouts, Joanna Denton became a business mentor, helping others who are experiencing struggles at work. Each month Joanna will use her expertise to help you with any business-related problems you may be experiencing in these uncertain times. Dear Joanna, I am a solopreneur running an online marketing business. Business is going ok, but I am finding it really lonely. There are so many decisions to make, so much stress as I try to scale and grow, and I don’t have anyone I can really talk to. When I mention any business challenges to my parents, they just tell me, “oh, it will all work out”, which just annoys me; I’m sad and resentful because my friends just whinge about not being able to go out to the pub during lockdown, and they don’t care what is going on in my life; and my peers don’t want to help because they are competitors. I just have no one around who I can share this stuff with. What can I do?
Nicola
Dear Nicola,
Thank you for sharing what is going on. I really do understand how it feels to think you have the weight of the world on your shoulders and no one to share it with. And it can be really tempting to try to just unload what you are feeling to the nearest person, and then get frustrated and sad when you think they don’t want to listen. Take a deep breath, we got this. As a business owner, it is so important to find the people who will support you – but you do need to choose those people well. Perhaps your parents, pub going friends and direct competitors are not the right people. Sometimes it is better to accept that, then go out and find those who are.
What support are you looking for? Who is best equipped to provide this? I wonder – what support are you really looking for? In your email, you talked about having “someone to talk to”, and I am curious to know more about that. When you can be clear on the support you need, it will be easier to identify who can provide it.
Here are some first suggestions which may resonate. Create your inner circle for emotional support Let’s think first about getting emotional support – someone to hold the space for you and just listen. Not

try to fix anything or compete with you over who is more stressed. Just listen.
Perhaps a business mentor or coach can provide the sounding board you need
Who are the one or two people in your life you can really count on? That’s your inner circle, and they don’t actually need to know anything about business, they just need to have your back.
Or perhaps you are looking for a sounding board to talk through business ideas, brainstorm solutions, and work on implementation together, and all this on a longer-term basis?
Remember, no one is telepathic – reach out to them on a one-to-one basis, really ask for the support you need, and have the confidence that they will step up to the plate. Remember any one can miss the mark in giving support if they don’t know what is needed.
Tap into local networks for logistical and practical support Perhaps you are looking for logistical, professional or practical support and advice, such as identifying where to find financial or government support? What are the networks in your area who provide this kind of information? During the pandemic local Chambers of Commerce and networks like Women in Business have come into their own in keeping their members up to speed on what support is available. There are others out there too. Joining such a network will also open doors to other entrepreneurs and business owners who will be willing to share their experiences.
Have you considered getting a business coach or mentor to work on these things together? Having someone on your side whose job it is to guide you in the development of your business is worth every penny you might pay to have their help. I hope that this has been helpful. Remember, you don’t have to do this alone – just get clear on what you need, and who is the best placed to provide it.

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING!
Staying stylish when you are pregnant isn’t a problem thanks to Dress My Bump Maternity Hire and Dress My Bump Preloved. Local Women meets stylish mum Karen Forsythe who is helping mums-to-be look and feel great. You know what it’s like – you’re six months pregnant complete with swollen ankles, tiredness and a new bump, and someone invites you to a wedding. Not only do you not feel like shopping, but you don’t know what suits you anymore, you feel frumpy and really don’t want to spend lots of money on an outfit you will only wear once. That’s how Karen Forsythe from Cloughmills was feeling when she was pregnant with twins Evie and Molly four years ago and couldn’t find anything to wear to a wedding. After ending spending ages ordering dresses online and sending them back, she ended up wearing a dress that wasn’t comfortable and she didn’t like that much. And so, the idea for Dress My Bump Maternity Hire was formed - but it wasn’t until after she had her third child Grace, who is now two, that she took the plunge and set up her businesses aimed at expectant mums just like she had been. Even though she worked as an accountant during the day and juggles looking after her three children, Karen has made a huge success of her business and women from around the country seek out her services when they are expecting and have a special event to attend. Her business has also recently expanded, and she has also set up Dress My Bump Preloved selling high quality second-hand maternity

and nursing clothes. Karen has moved her business online over lockdown but is looking forward to restrictions being eased so that she can once again meet her customers face to face. So, let’s meet this supermum who loves helping mums-to be find their maternity look and dress their bumps in style…
We are so impressed that you run two businesses for expectant mums - You’re a super mum! Life is definitely busy, but I think sometimes I thrive on that. I’m very lucky to have a fantastic support network in my husband, the girls’ grandparents and our wider family – it’s because of them that I am able to do it. I also work part-time as an accountant so the days I’m not working I’m at home with the girls. Most of the work involved in Dress My Bump is done in the evenings but there
have been more than a few occasions where I’ve needed someone to keep the girls for a few hours through the day to catch up on things and I’m very lucky that I have plenty of offers of help.
Can you tell us a little about Dress My Bump Maternity Hire and what you offer? I started Dress My Bump Maternity Hire in August 2019, when Grace was around six months old. The idea had been playing on my mind for a while since I was pregnant with the twins and had to find a maternity dress for a wedding. There was just nowhere local to go to be able to try on dresses. I began to research maternity dress hire and realised that there was nowhere local offering that service. So, in the summer of 2019 I bit the bullet and started up my own hire service. At Dress My Bump Maternity Hire, we hire
out designer maternity and nursing occasion dresses from as little as £30 in sizes 6 to 18. We also hire out fascinators, headpieces, handbags, shawls and faux fur wraps to complement your dress. We have a wide range of dresses to fit all bump shapes and sizes, including full length gowns and we also have a wide range of satin and diamante sash belts which are included in the cost of your dress hire.
Do you work on an appointment basis? Yes, we operate by appointment only with appointments normally available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and throughout the day on Saturdays. Each appointment is booked for an hour but quite often they run on for up to two hours as sometimes customers find it hard to decide! I leave plenty of time between appointments anyway, we are quite relaxed that way.
in particular, our jeans are normally priced around £8 which is a massive saving on your maternity wardrobe. I personally check every item to make sure they are in a saleable condition, iron the items (wash them if needed), photograph them and list them on the website.
How can you stay stylish when you are pregnant? I think you should try to stay true to your own style. When I was pregnant the first time, I’m ashamed to say that my style was led by the clothes which were available to me on the high street (which was not a huge choice by any means!) I became aware the second time around of the preloved maternity clothes market and it was a joy to be able to find unique pieces which slotted right in with my own pre-pregnancy style.
And what about Dress My Bump Preloved? Dress My Bump Preloved was another idea which had been playing on my mind for a while but came about almost as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020. I had organised a preloved maternity and nursing clothes sale event for April 2020 to be held in a local hotel as a side-line to the maternity hire business. During the winter of 2019 and spring of 2020, I had been gathering up as many preloved clothes as possible for the event. Then COVID-19 struck, and the lockdown meant that we had to cancel the event. I decided to set up a website to try to sell the clothes (www.dressmybumppreloved.com). The website first went live in June 2020 and we have been going from strength to strength since then. I normally buy from local women who are clearing out some space and want to make some money in the process. We sell all types of maternity and nursing clothes including dresses, jeans, trousers, tops, jumpers, coats, bump bands, shirts and pyjamas. All items are in great condition (some brand new with tags!) and are a fraction of the retail price –
How easy is it to source fashionable maternity wear? The preloved market makes it so much easier than I once thought. Since starting Dress My Bump Preloved, I have been so pleasantly surprised at the style of some of the maternity and nursing clothes. It’s so refreshing to see colourful, pretty, unique clothes, instead of the blacks/greys/stripes in the shops. That said, preloved clothes are usually sold on the larger marketplaces in bundles. My experience has been that there was maybe only one or two items in the bundle which I really wanted or some of the items may have been in poor condition. Dress My Bump Preloved sells items individually so you can choose what you want, and all items are checked to make sure they are in good condition.
What’s the best part of your job? Without a doubt the best part is meeting people. I love hearing the pregnancy journeys of my customers and in many cases I have stayed in touch and have had the pleasure of hearing about the new arrival. It’s especially exciting when they return with their little one to look for a nursing dress! Of course, there are some pregnancy journeys tinged with sadness too and those customers I will never forget.
How can I get in touch and see what you have on offer? You can visit our maternity hire website at www. dressmybumpmaternityhire.com to see some of our dresses and get some more information regarding the hire process - there are more pictures on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Appointments can be made by contacting us on Facebook, Instagram or using the contact details on our website. All our preloved clothes are listed on the website at www.dressmybumppreloved.com. We have separate Facebook and Instagram pages for the preloved business and if you have items to sell or any other queries, you can get in touch by contacting us through these or using the contact form on the website.

Armagh
here at GASP we have a chock full of amazing labels and latest trends and carry an extensive range of dresses also, we cover all colours, designs, shapes and sizes ranging from sizes 8 to 26! If you know your style and have a good idea of what you want, you can still be truly unique and Wow At your wedding , all you need is a little guidance from our well trained team of stylists who truly pride themselves in helping you find that perfect outfit. Please note that due to Covid safety we are taking personal appointments in advance as we are getting booked up fairly quickly and we would like to give you that special attention that you deserve . Whether you’re the mother of the bride or the mother of the groom, there is a certain ‘look’ that people will expect from you timeless, tailored and above all very elegant and chic. It would be advisable and probably expected of you to notify the mother of the groom (presumably to prevent overdressing, clashing colours, and other fashion ideas) And while it’s certainly good form, it’s not a requirement especially if you’re worried about been pushy or bossy. That said, the mother of the groom might really appreciate and even expect a heads up. I Have had so many Mother of the brides come in looking for an outfit and they are worried that the mother of the groom might wear the same colour etc so its best that you subtly pass the details along or better yet, give her a call yourself. Try to sound as friendly “I finally found a dress that fits! Do you know what you’re wearing yet?” Chances are the mother of the groom will want to know more. Of course, she might be totally disinterested, but if that happens, don’t sweat it you’ve been heard. Some will swear by the “rule” that all the dresses must coordinate. And some
brides really love that matchymatchy look. But there are countless alternatives. Maybe stay within one colour spectrum if the bridesmaids dress happens to be baby blue for instance the mother of the bride can wear navy. But mixing and matching can be ultra-stylish too. What’s most important, however, is that everyone feels comfortable and beautiful, so come along to visit us here at Gasp we will do our very best to look after you! Another bit of advice is to start shopping for your outfit as soon as possible. If you must put it off because you are trying to shape up or you just dread the idea of shopping in general, you still really need to aim to have made a decision at least six months before the wedding it will also let the groom’s mom know so she can get her outfit orgainsed plus by doing this you can also get the father of the brides colour scheme in place also. That’s all for this Month ladies, if you would like more information on the extensive range of our Mother of the brides designer labels, sizes, accessories , hats, footwear, headpieces and alterations please feel free to visit us here at Gasp we are open six days a week and would love to see you! LET’S TALK ABOUT PELVIC HEALTH
Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health Anne-Marie Campbell is helping women to overcome embarrassment and seek help for intimate women’s health problems at Health Hub Professionals NI. Pictures by Gerard Gormley Anne-Marie Campbell is on a mission to improve the lives of women. As a Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health, she wants all women to have proper information about intimate health issues that affect them and the ability to be able to seek immediate help. For too long women have been ashamed and embarrassed about certain problems and feel they have no one to turn to. Often issues such as incontinence, prolapse, sexual dysfunction or problems relating to periods and the menopause, are not subjects that women feel comfortable talking to their GP about. They feel they have to simply live with their health issues, causing pain, distress, anxiety, and a lack of confidence. Added to this is the problem of NHS waiting lists for specialist clinics relating to women’s health issues, meaning many women are suffering for too long. It’s for this reason that Anne Marie set up a private practice called Health Hub Professionals NI where she works alongside her friend and business partner Karen Murphy who is a specialist hand therapist. At Health Hub Professionals NI Anne-Marie assesses and treats patients in a timely manner, helping them to overcome problems that they may have lived with for quite some time. Anne- Marie says: “Women should know they are not alone and that there should be no shame or secrecy around their experiences. Attitudes are definitely changing, and women are definitely less likely to accept that this is just how life should be because they’ve had a baby or they’re going through the menopause.”
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN WOMEN’S HEALTH? I have been a Pelvic Health Physio in the NHS for almost 18 years and have been in private practice for over two years.
WHAT IS YOUR WORK HISTORY? I qualified from UUJ in 2001 and took up my first physio post at Our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton, Leitrim at the start of 2002. Being a homebird I moved back to Derry to take up a junior post in Altnagelvin at the start of 2003 and got my first Women’s Health job later that year. The job has evolved and grown over the years and is now known as Pelvic Health as we also treat male pelvic floors. I have done a lot of postgraduate training over the years and have a special interest in the treatment of Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation) and in psychosexual dysfunction. I am currently doing a Diploma with the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine and hope to go on to be a member. 48 | Local Women Magazine
Anne-Marie Campbell
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE WORK OF HEALTH HUB PROFESSIONALS NI? I treated my friend Karen Murphy, who is a hand specialist, for hip problems after the birth of her last child and we decided to come together to offer our specialist services under one roof. In a private setting we can offer treatments in a timelier fashion and without the constraints that can come with the NHS. Our long-term plan is to bring other AHP services to the clinic such as podiatry, speech and language therapy and dietetics.
DO YOU WORK WITH WOMEN OF ALL AGES? I work with women (and men) of all ages, but I have found that, compared to when I started all those years ago, women are presenting at a much younger age. Women are more informed and are much better about looking after themselves.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN PROBLEMS THAT YOU TREAT? I treat bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and pregnancy related back and pelvic pain. I also offer a ‘Mummy Matters’ postnatal check – this helps to identify any issues that have arisen due to pregnancy and childbirth and can help prevent issues from arising in the future.
WHAT COMMON PROBLEMS ARE EASILY TREATED? Each patient comes with an incredibly unique story – sometimes they are treated very easily and sometimes it takes a bit more work. Each patient has an initial assessment, and a treatment plan is put in place – they are then reassessed at each session. Sometimes two or three sessions is enough and for others the rehab programme is more extensive – it completely depends on the severity and longevity of their symptoms.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ASSESSMENT? During an assessment, a full history of the presenting condition is taken along with a general medical history. Usually, an internal examination is carried out, but this is only done with the full consent of the patient. If a patient is really not keen on an internal, we can still do an external exam and work from there.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NERVOUS PATIENTS? As I have been doing this work for so long, I feel that I can very easily make patients feel at ease with what is happening. I take my time and explain exactly what I am going to do as we go along. I also reassure women that we don’t have to do anything they are not happy with. Patients frequently comment on how I make them feel relaxed and make an oftenembarrassing issue easy to discuss.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WOMEN WHO FEEL EMBARRASSED ABOUT A CONDITION THEY HAVE? Pelvic floor dysfunctions are such a common occurrence but, because it’s not talked about, women feel isolated and embarrassed. Women need to be informed about these conditions, need to know how common they are and need to know that help is available. It’s only by informing and empowering women that we take the embarrassment out of it. There isn’t too much that I haven’t seen or heard at this stage so there is no reason for any woman to be too embarrassed to reach out.
IF A WOMAN IS READING THIS RIGHT NOW, AND HAS A CONDITION SHE FEELS TOO EMBARRASSED TO SPEAK TO HER GP ABOUT, WHAT CAN SHE DO? The great thing about the clinic is that it bypasses the ‘middleman’ and takes the patient straight to the source of treatment. Whilst we do take referrals from private sector consultants most of our patients self-refer. So, a quick call, message or email will allow a patient to arrange an appointment at a day and time that suits them. We also offer evening and weekend appointments which a lot of women find more suitable.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I am deeply passionate about the work that I do as I see the huge impact these problems have on a woman’s overall quality of life. Whilst curing some of the issues that women present with may not be possible the best part of my job is seeing women make huge improvements in their symptoms allowing them to do the things they want to do and go the places they want to go.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OPENNESS AROUND WOMEN’S HEALTH ISSUES? I would love to see more openness around women’s health issues which was why I wanted to do a monthly article for the magazine. I saw it as the perfect platform to get the information out there so that women would know they are not alone and that there should be no shame or secrecy around their experiences. Attitudes are definitely changing, and women are definitely less likely to accept that this is just how life should be because they’ve had a baby or they’re going through the menopause. A simple conversation could be the first steps in a journey to recovery and early intervention can prevent those issues from becoming the thing that keeps you back.

As we’ve been adapting to alternative ways of working these past few months, the focus has temporarily shifted to online sales and communicating with customers via social media. While I’m a firm believer in the ‘in-store’ shopping experience, I have seen a huge demand for mini-consultations and styling advice for smaller areas via direct messages. I often say that it’s the accessories that make the room and it seems that the finishing touches can often be the hardest for people to pull together. From mantlepiece styling to filling an empty corner,
items work in harmony while all being visible. Layer, tone & texture: Avoid the trap of matching accessory colours too much, this often result in a dated textured pieces for a more sophisticated interior. Greenery: Be it real plants or faux plants (if like me you prefer the low maintenance option) adding greenery into a room helps to make it feel larger and fresher, even if they are artificial. It doesn’t have to be a giant potted plant, a succulent or some eucalyptus in a vase can be a cost-effective way of enhancing your room. the requests for help with these small projects have become a daily occurrence throughout lockdown and it seems that a new interior design trend for small scale design is upon us. Everyone wants a designer look but not everyone wants or has the means to hire one for a full home design. Having a selection of finishing touches curated for your room can make all the difference and give that designer touch. Small scale styling jobs can be done quite easily through social media messages. Generally, a customer will send a request and photo of the area and I will suggest items that work together, are relevant for the space and co-ordinate with their room. When it comes to styling, for me the main thing is to have fun with it. Sometimes an object’s only purpose is to look good and that’s absolutely fine. The “Objet d’art” should be something interesting, intriguing and ultimately something that you love. A lamp will provide light, a vase will hold flowers, a piece of coral on a stand won’t do any of these things but can still look amazing on a sideboard. I don’t really subscribe to any rigid set of rules for interior design or styling, but I do tend to keep the following in mind: Group items: There’s strength in numbers, some like to group objects in three’s and five’s and there’s certainly no wrong formula to it. It depends on the size of the objects and the size of the area. Creating

Hazel’s Got The Gift
Local Women Editor Kim Kelly has a reading with psychic medium Hazel McWall from Forkhill with some fascinating results. Pictures by Sean Donegan “Do you believe in this kind of thing?” asks Hazel McWall as we begin our psychic session. I have to think for a minute – I can honestly say that I don’t NOT believe in it. I guess, I’m on the fence. I have never seen a ghost, but I can’t say I don’t believe. On the other hand, the afterlife is a massive part of Hazel’s world. Her parents both had ‘the gift’ and from a young age she could see spirits. Hazel, who lives in Forkhill in Co Armagh, very matter of factly describes herself as a gatekeeper between our world and the spirit world. She stands between the two worlds, the door opens, and spirits reveal themselves to her when she is doing a reading. She explains: “It probably sounds a little crazy to some people, but spirits have been all around me from a very young age, I don’t know a life without them. “Some people I’m sure think I’m mad, others think it is scary, but as I always say – you have nothing to fear from the dead – only the living will harm you.” Over the years Hazel has worked with many people who want to make contact with the deceased. She is happy that she is able to offer them reassurance and says that after a reading it is like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. She has also worked on an informal basis with some police forces on cases that have stalled and has been successful in giving them vital leads. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are speaking over the phone. Hazel introduces herself and quickly dispels any myths I might have about ‘fortune tellers.’ She explains that she is psychic medium and doesn’t need to use cards, tea leaves, a crystal ball or any kind of prop. If you are looking for a spooky, supernatural experience – forget it! With Hazel there is no mystical sounding voice or ghostly language. She sounds like an ordinary 54 | Local Women Magazine

We move on to talk about the future. Hazel tells me I won’t marry again but I will find happiness with someone I already know who “gets me.” She tells me I wasn’t sure about him at first but he is “my person.” She gives me his initial - I know who she means!
woman from Newry and has a very pleasant and engaging manner. In fact, I warm to her immediately – she is so down-to-earth and sounds very kind. Hazel herself says that she operates in a world where there are lots of confidence tricksters. She is well aware of the scepticism that surrounds her gift - but her gift speaks for itself as I will soon see.
Hazel assures me that I will be financially secure, which of course I am delighted about and tells me I won’t have long to wait for this.
This reading has been set up by a mutual contact. All Hazel knows is my first name and that I am a writer for the press. Obviously, she could go onto Facebook and search our mutual friend’s contact list and try and find me and crib up on the kind of person I am.
She also warns me very strongly about someone about to come into my life with dyed red hair who will try and do something bad to me. She says I will know who this is as soon as I meet her.
But what she is about to tell me isn’t on my Facebook page – there is absolutely no way she could know the things she does about me. I doubt my closest friends know these things – and Hazel McWall definitely the person who set this up would not be aware. me. This actually give me a sense of reassurance Hazel explains that she will introduce the people – nana was a real no nonsense kind of character as they appear to her. I immediately assume it is my paternal grandmother to whom I was very close, but no, she says it is my maternal grandmother.
We move on to other topics – Hazel is so matter of fact as she tells me about my divorce and about friends and details of a woman I can’t trust and need to be wary off. One week later this comes true.
She describes an elegant lady who is glamorous She tells me that my best friend is a blonde lady, and well groomed. She’s standing next to a flower then she hesitates and says “sandy haired” twice. My best friend is indeed a blonde lady called bed and she is wearing a medal round her neck. Sandra – nicknamed Sandy! I immediately recall that my nana Kathleen was a successful lady bowler who won medals for Hazel is able to tell me about my work – she Ireland. I could honestly talk to Hazel for hours. She invites me to ask her questions and her knowledge of my life is quite uncanny. The level of detail is astonishing. It is really lovely to talk to her and our hourlong session flies past, leaving me feeling a little overwhelmed. And it’s not just me who is overwhelmed by Hazel’s gift. The next day our photographer Sean Donegan goes to take Hazel’s picture and she gives him an impromptu reading. He rings me on his way home, buzzing with what she has told him. Sean is more than a little cynical about this kind of thing but Hazel tells him things that he just can’t argue with. He is astonished. Hazel says she loves to use her gifts for good. She enjoys helping people and offering them reassurance. There is nothing remotely scary or sinister about talking to her. It’s like talking to an old friend. Whether you believe or not, it is certainly very entertaining and gets you thinking about your life and people you had long forgotten. Once the restrictions have been lifted, Hazel is determined to get out and about and share her gift. She plans to hold a number of intimate public psychic reading sessions and is inviting people to come along and learn more about her world. One thing for sure, I will be there …but I guess she already knows that! Hazel McWall will appear at Crumlin Road Gaol on April 17 at 9pm. Three Ways to Enjoy Exercise this February It might be easier to stay indoors, wrap up with a blanket and binge on Bridgeton but we all know how great it feels to say we’ve been outside and enjoyed some kind of daily exercise. Gyms are still closed, and motivation is at an all-time low. But with this month’s column, we’re giving you three different ideas that will help you enjoy exercise again.
Get your Bubble on Board
Getting active doesn’t have to be a chore – you can make it as much fun as you like. Encourage the people in your household to get on board and make it part of your routine. Why not schedule in a daily walk or run somewhere close to your home? You could explore local forests or spend some time at the beach if it’s within your local proximity. We’re lucky to have lots of beautiful landmarks on our doorstep to choose from.
Get together with Friends
We’re all missing our friends right now, and it seems like forever since we last caught up with them in person. While we might not be able to for another while, we can still get together virtually and work out online via Zoom or Google Hangout. Send out an invite and get your besties together for a virtual yoga or aerobics class. You could 56 | Local Women Magazine
even make it a bit of fun and sign up to an online dance or Zumba class. Even if you don’t burn off those January wines, you can laugh on the phone afterwards at how ridiculous you looked trying to master the moves.
Get competitive
Another great way to get active this February is to set yourself a challenge. It’s safe to say we’re all feeling a little down and out, but what better way to inject some excitement into your life than a daily challenge. The sense of achievement at the end will boost your mood and you’ll feel even better for it. Some ideas include: • Walking 5,000 to 10,000 steps a day • Jogging three times a week • Hike up a local mountain • Try cold-water swimming at your local beach Whatever it might be, try to get your friends and family involved too – you could even set up a dedicated group chat to motivate each other every week.
Wrap up in Style
It’s important to wrap up while you’re enjoying all this outdoor activity. You might work up a sweat if you’re working out, but it is still super cold in February so a few layers are a necessity. We’ve lots of great unisex layering pieces online from The North Face and Napapijri that can work for both men and women. Long-sleeved t-shirts, a fleece and a heavier coat will keep you feeling toasty while you’re tackling the elements. And don’t forget about your hat, scarf and gloves. All these pieces will take you into Spring because let’s face it, we’re never too blessed when it comes to Mr Sunshine.

SLIMMING WORLD’S TOP HEALTHY LOCKDOWN TIPS... Check out the Mid Ulsters team’s boredom–busting, hope–inspiring and practical top tips from Slimming World to help us all get through lockdown and stay healthy and fit along the way.
• FALL IN LOVE WITH FOOD It’s so easy to get stuck in a bit of a rut when it comes to cooking. Do you find yourself making the same handful of meals on repeat every week? If so, you could take this time to try something new. It doesn’t have to be too complicated or time consuming – just something that makes you feel excited about cooking again. Or maybe it’s finally finding something to do with that ingredient that’s been lurking at the back of your store-cupboard for a while – that tin of chickpeas could make a delicious homemade hummus or that bag of quinoa could be your new salad superstar! Many people have found solace in baking, too – and there’s no need to miss out on that because you’re following Slimming World! Banana bread seems to be the hottest trend at the moment, so why not have a go at the Slimming World-friendly version which you can find on the Slimming World blog. If you’ve got kids at home, they’re sure to enjoy helping out too. Just call it home economics!
• STAY IN TOUCH Staying connected is now more important than ever – and not just for your weight loss. Sometimes you just need a laugh with your mates to lift your spirits! Video calls are, of course, hugely popular during lockdown – things like scheduling a date with your mates and coming together online to replace that monthly night out, or booking a family quiz night and testing your loved ones’ general knowledge. Don’t forget to make some healthy snacks to nibble while you’re catching up too! Lots of Slimming World members have made firm friends at their local groups and when we took the difficult decision to temporarily suspend our groups it was clear there would be thousands of Consultants and members missing the camaraderie and support of their Slimming World groups, too. That’s why we’ve launched virtual groups. Whether it’s attending your weekly group, chatting via a closed
guidelines also suggest we can get out limitlessly in our local area to be physically active, so fit in a daily walk if you can, or set yourself a challenge like completing Couch to 5K. Of course, activity doesn’t have to mean running or aerobics though – it can be something as simple as weeding in the garden (harder than you’d think!) or getting some DIY and spring cleaning done. Anything that raises your heartrate counts!
• SOOTHE YOUR MIND Facebook group or sharing successes via WhatsApp, it’s so important to make the most of every ounce of support if you’re trying to manage your weight. Visit slimmingworld.co.uk for more information on our virtual service, or contact your local Consultant directly.
• TAKE CONTROL It might seem silly to suggest taking time out when many of us are spending more time at home than ever, but it’s still important to practice a little self-care. There’s a lot happening in the world that we can’t control and that can start to impact our motivation to stay in control of our eating and activity habits, but actually looking after ourselves is something we can control. So as well as staying on track with any healthy eating plans or keeping up with your regular activity, it’s important to schedule in some ‘me’ time too. Run a hot bubble bath and give yourself a pamper, pop on your favourite podcast (have you subscribed to the Slimming World Podcast yet?) or settle down with a book or magazine (we highly recommend Slimming World Magazine, of course!).
• GET ACTIVE Your usual gym might be closed but there are still plenty of ways to get active in lockdown, if you’d like to. Remember exercise isn’t just good for your body – it’s a great mood-booster too. There are loads of online classes you can try out – from HIIT to salsa-cize. Current
In these challenging times, people will be feeling more worried and anxious than usual, and these feelings could have an impact on us making healthy choices and see us turn to food for comfort. If current events on the news are a trigger for you, try to limit your exposure. Make your own playlists rather than listening to the radio, scroll through just one social media channel, and enjoy a Netflix fix rather than watch live TV. Let those around you know if it makes you feel uncomfortable to talk about current affairs, too. Focusing on the present moment – mindfulness – to calm your mind in times of uncertainty can be really helpful. Colouring books, jigsaws and word puzzles are useful activities for this. Also, there are apps that guide you through techniques to help ease anxiety or panic. As we approach the end of lockdown, our groups will be back in a safe secure environment for you to join us and we cannot wait for that day. We say that group is where the magic happens and we look forward to seeing current and new members alike walk back through our doors, if you would like to book your space our find out more about our current groups log on to www. SlimmingWorld.co.uk for more information.

SKINPEN MEDICAL MICRO-NEEDLING The Celebrity must have treatment for 2021!
Celebrity Endorsements – SkinPen treatment has openly been endorsed by Victoria Beckham, who filmed herself having the treatment and posted it onto her Instagram. Amanda Holden went live on Heart Radio and her own Instagram to speak about the great results she has enjoyed.
WHAT IS SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING & HOW DOES IT WORK? SkinPen Precision is an award-winning mechanical micro-needling device that organically stimulates the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As we age, our skin’s natural architecture deteriorates, Collagen depletes, and ageing signs set in. This deterioration leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, and uneven skin texture. SkinPen comfortably creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. This process results in the formation and remodelling of Collagen, which supports the underlying tissue. Results continue to work up to 4-6 months, producing 400% more Collagen in a single treatment – A course of 3 treatments is usually recommended for optimal results. We may also combine or alternate with other treatment options alongside a tailored skincare regime, all of which we would discuss at consultation. SkinPen microneedling is a natural, organic treatment, which is non-invasive, with zero downtime. The results leave your skin looking smoother, youthful and tighter, softening the fine lines & wrinkles.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE? The treatment itself takes 30 minutes to complete, plus another 30 minutes to prep and cleanse the skin before and after. You will feel a mild sunburn feeling post-treatment and you will be sent home with a post-treatment Rescue Serum to apply for 1-4 days afterwards.
BEFORE
AFTER
The treatment is safe on all Fitzpatrick skin types and is effective on all body parts, including the face, neck, décolleté. SAFETY FIRST – An award-winning microneedling device, SkinPen is the safest device on the market, globally, with zero chance of any cross contamination. SkinPen Precision is the world’s first FDA Cleared, Class IIa medical grade, CE Certification, and Globally ISO certified, and BSI accredited.
BEFORE
AFTER
I am proud to offer SkinPen in my clinic, for the reasons mentioned above, as it aims to be the number one choice of modalities for antiageing and the treatment of scars by all medical professionals and aesthetic practitioners. The results we have seen with client commitment are fantastic! Cant wait to get reopened and back to providing treatments.

Hope for the future at North West Independent Hospital The team at North West Independent Hospital are raising awareness of mental health issues as it is revealed that over 162,000 people are waiting more than a year for NHS appointments. The staff at North West Independent Hospital performed the online sensation, the Jerusalema Dance, to create awareness of mental health issues and to remind everyone to get their vaccine and support the NHS. Across the world videos of the Jerusalema Dance performed by doctors, nurses, police officers and other frontline workers have been going viral. And at North West Regional Hospital, the staff enjoyed getting involved as it gave them the opportunity to smile and celebrate the fact that soon we should slowly be emerging from lockdown. As healthcare professionals, the team are well aware that many people are experiencing difficult feelings and emotions about coronavirus. This may be a fear of getting sick, the government restrictions, or feeling hopeless about when the pandemic might end. All these can manifest themselves into serious health issues. Taking care of mental health is so important and they hope that if they can bring a smile to someone’s face watching the professionals at the hospital dancing, it is well worth it.
Leanne, Deirdre, Jodie and Jamie.
They also want the community to understand the importance of getting the vaccine, and how by getting vaccinated you can restrict the spread of the virus, protect communities, and allow everyone to get back to some form of normality where we can meet friends and family without the fear of causing untold suffering. The Jerusalema Dance was organised by the hospital management as part of the employee welfare programme. The staff have been under extreme pressure dealing with thousands of outpatients and inpatients during lockdown and supporting the NHS. The frontline staff have coped fantastically during these extraordinary times and the dance challenge was a break from the norm and a bit of light entertainment for all the staff to get involved in.
Ann, Maria and Sarah . Bobby, Tonia and Finola.
The latest statistics suggest that the backlog for care is worse than expected, and the 162,000 people waiting more than a year for care is only the tip of the iceberg. There have been just under 4 million fewer referrals for hospital care since March this year compared to the same time last year, with more patients having their conditions managed by their GP or in the community. It is not clear how many more people will need urgent or routine care next year as a result, but this can only add to the considerable backlog of 4.4 million people waiting for care.
Tonia
The NHS went into Covid-19 with a workforce crisis and rising waits for care. Even with the positive news of a vaccine, the impact of Covid-19 on waiting times for NHS patients will be felt for years to come. The knock-on effect from this has been felt within hospitals like North West Independent Hospital as they help the NHS with their backlog. At North West Independent Hospital, they hope by liking and sharing their social media video post they can reach as many people as possible as we finally emerge from this very dark time.

With This Ring… Choose your wedding ring with the help of the experts at Hall & Guild Specialist Jewellers.
H
i everyone,
This month our sister store Hall & Guild Specialist Jewellers is going to take the reins and talk everything wedding rings! Throughout lockdown brides-to-be remain resilient and are continuing with their wedding planning, so much so that we have been inundated with enquiries about wedding rings. In particular couples want to know the time it takes to order and collect their rings, especially at short notice if a new rescheduled wedding date becomes available to them. When choosing your wedding ring its useful to consider the following points:
try on and get a really good idea of styles. If you are looking for a style unique to you, we will design this for you to ensure you have the ring you love for many years to come. I would always advise keeping the metals the same so in effect if your engagement ring is 9ct white gold then choose a 9ct white gold wedding ring. There is no rule when it comes to identical metals for your partner and you - for example if your rings are yellow gold, your partner can opt for a platinum band instead. Their ring does not need to match yours, its personal choice if you both are happy. Why not consider engraving the inside of your wedding rings with your wedding date as a personal touch? We can do this for you at any time.
•
Firstly, think about the style of wedding ring you would like and what would compliment your engagement ring. Would you prefer a more timeless traditional band with no detailing or embellishment, or would you prefer diamond set wedding band with plenty of sparkle?
With regards to lead time, if you need your wedding rings at short notice, do not worry. We carry a stock of stunning wedding rings in a variety of styles and sizes. If you would like to opt for a bespoke style, then allow five to six weeks from the date of order. Rest assured you will have your rings for your special day.
•
Is your engagement ring a unique style? Will you need to have your wedding ring specially designed and made to fit perfectly beside your engagement ring? Would you like your wedding ring and engagement ring to sit flush together like a perfect set or are you happy with a slight space in between both rings?
We have moved…..
•
Think about your lifestyle and occupation. Does your job allow you to have a diamond set band? If you opt for a shaped band to compliment your cluster style engagement ring would you be happy wearing this style on its own when you are at work?
There is lots to consider but the good news is, we are here to help. For over 16 years now we have specialised in wedding and commitment rings. We have a vast range of traditional, diamond set and shaped rings in store for both yourself and your partner to

The Ballymoney woman had been a nurse for almost thirty years and then sustained a broken back after a road traffic accident in 2011.
Her knowledge and expertise come from personal experience, her nursing background and customer testimonials.
She had no choice but to take analgesia including morphine, tramadol and gabapentin and she really wanted to get off these drugs as she was very aware of the side effects.
Since the start of the pandemic last March, Karen has seen a marked increase in the number of people reaching out for her help and keen to try the products.
She tried many therapies and treatments to no avail nothing she did seemed to make a difference. Then her close friend Ann Watson told the Ballymoney woman about Magnetix Wellness. Karen was sceptical but Ann insisted that it had worked for her. Karen eventually tried the Power Heart, which is the strongest magnet within the range.

WHY VITAMIN D IS SO IMPORTANT DURING THE PANDEMIC
At Chemist Connect, they have a range of Vitamin D supplements that will boost your immune system and help give you the very best fighting chance against COVID-19. Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic we have heard time and time again that we must take Vitamin D supplements to reduce the severity of the disease. Many people ask, “What exactly is Vitamin D?” and “Why has it suddenly become so important?” or “Do I not already get enough of this Vitamin by eating a healthy balanced diet?” Vitamin D is a fat-soluble compound informally known as the ‘sunshine vitamin.’ This is because it is naturally produced in the body in response to sunlight. However, it is also obtained through diet, in foods such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolks and certain fortified cereals. This vitamin plays a critical role in promoting immune and anti-inflammatory responses. In fact, the vitamin is so important for immune function that low levels of vitamin D have been associated with increased susceptibility to infection, disease, and immune-related disorders. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic it has been shown in multiple studies across Europe that patients with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to require hospitalisation post exposure to COVID-19, relative to those with sufficient Vitamin D levels. Like many other northern European countries, Ireland as a whole has limited sunlight exposure meaning most people will not achieve adequate Vitamin D levels. Indeed, one local hospital reported that persons living in their area had alarmingly low blood levels of the nutrient. After examining 10,000 Vitamin D test results, an osteoporosis specialist, found that 75% of the samples tested had insufficient Vitamin D levels and 12% were extremely low. The
prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency across the country highlights that most people will achieve suboptimal levels of Vitamin D without taking nutritional supplements. For the average Adult in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it is recommended that a nutritional supplement of 20-25micrograms (1000IU) is taken every day to build up a sufficient level of Vitamin D. This has become so important that leading Medical Journals such as ‘The Irish Medical Journal’ have advised “that all older adults, hospital inpatients, nursing home residents and other vulnerable groups be urgently supplemented with this dose of Vitamin D to enhance their resistance to COVID-19, and that this advice be quickly extended to the general adult population.” We understand that the idea of taking daily supplements may be off putting to many. That indeed many individuals may already lead healthy lives with a very good diet and get plenty of outdoor exercise. However, even when taking these factors into account unless we can make the old Nursery Rhyme of “Rain, Rain go away” and actually make the rain stop and allow us to get more daily sunshine, then the vast majority of us will need to take Vitamin D supplementation to achieve optimum levels. These supplements come in a range of different forms including but not limited to tablets, sprays, liquid, and even oral drops for children. Most formulations are available to buy over the counter in the majority of pharmacies at a relatively inexpensive price.
Vitamin D comes in a large range of doses, from 400IU drops for children, up to 2000IU tablets for adults. By and large the most popular option for adults is a once-a-day 1000IU tablet for those aged 12 years and up. If building up an adequate Vitamin D level sounds like something you would like to achieve, we advise you start this journey as soon as possible. Vitamin D being a fat-soluble vitamin takes longer than most vitamins to build to optimal levels. It is estimated that with supplementation it takes around three to four months before it accumulates to sufficient levels in the body, in order to give you an optimal immune response. Whilst this is by no means a message of ‘if you take Vitamin D supplementation you will be immune from being hospitalised by COVID-19,’ nor is the take home that Vitamin D supplementation is an alternative to receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. However, on the basis of all the clinical information that is now available, we can be sure that Vitamin D will boost your immune system and help give you the very best fighting chance during this pandemic. We would happily invite you to pop into one your local Chemist Connect branches and talk further with our staff instore or check out our range of Vitamin D products online. There are always trained staff available who can provide advice on our Vitamin D product range. We will always do our best to advise you on which product will be most useful for you, your family, and your lifestyle. Stay healthy and stay safe folks during these hard times!

INTRODUCING THE EXCLUSIVE HAUS OF HAIR RANGE There was no time for rest during lockdown for Haus of Hair’s Charlene
Hawthorne. The dynamic businesswomen used her time to re-skill and to launch her own innovative range of hair products to keep your hair looking its best. Lockdown has been tough for everyone but in particular hairdressers have suffered from the seemingly never-ending closures. Loss of work and lack of income has caused real problems within the industry as hairdressing professionals have been forced to sit back and watch as their businesses closed for months on end. But in the midst of such a bleak time, top hairdresser Charlene Hawthorne has used lockdown to move her business forward and take her career in a direction she never thought possible. Charlene, a hairdresser of 15 years, who is owner of Haus of Hair in Camlough says that while her salon was closed, she put her focus into getting teaching qualifications and taking advanced training courses. And once she had done that, she launched her own range of Haus of Hair products and Charlene says: “Like most people I was set up a new website focussing on the retail depressed about lockdown, but I pulled side of her business. myself out of it and focussed. I feel like I have found my passion and I have used my time to improve my business and my skillset.
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN HAUS OF HAIR?
I got married and had my first child and I struggled with the work/life balance. I decided to take a step back from running “I have enjoyed learning new things and a business, so I rented a chair for a while. At now I can’t wait to get back and see all my that time, I was nominated as Local Women Magazine’s Hairstylist of the Year and made lovely clients.” the final seven.
HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER AS A HAIRDRESSER?
After three years of renting a chair and one more child, I decided I would take the leap I trained at Southern Regional College and back into running a business, Haus of Hair worked at Scissors in Newry before moving has been up and running now for two years. to Brighton. I managed a busy salon there for four years and soon became a colour TELL US ABOUT HAUS OF HAIR AND specialist. I am grateful for all the advanced WHAT YOU OFFER YOUR CLIENTS? training I received there. After returning At Haus of Hair, we pride ourselves in home I opened my own salon and ran continued education - we are both colour it successfully for six years. My work was and hair extension specialists. We have an regularly featured in magazines and I styled amazing, highly talented team who are all barista trained so we will make you the best at many events.

We have a very chilled relaxed vibe which instantly puts our clients at ease. Our expert team are all trained in our retail range and prescribe the correct after-care for any hair or scalp type. We will only recommend and stock products that we truly believe will work for our clients.
ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK TO WORK SOON?
I spent the first month of lockdown wallowing in self-pity. Then one morning I decided enough was enough. I needed a project to keep me busy, so I put all my focus into getting my teaching qualification. I’m now fully qualified and insured to teach but that wasn’t enough for me. I then completed the most difficult course to date, the Alfaparf master’s degree in chemicals and colour. After a lot of late nights studying and boring my husband
YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED A RANGE OF PRODUCTS - CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THEM? THE WAVER DRESS OUT COMB
We are counting down the days until we return. Hairdressers aren’t designed to sit still, we crave the buzz of the salon, the busy atmosphere and the social aspect of our job. We are used to seeing a new face every 30 to 60 minutes all day, every day - so for that to stop has been hard.
HOW HAS COVID-19 AFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS?
to death every night making him quiz me, I proudly finished top of my class, with 96% . The thoughts of my own brand had been brewing in my mind for some time and I worked day and night researching and developing our range, and our website.
This is designed to give you beautiful waves, or to create that stunning beachy boho look. I designed this comb as I often had clients say to me, they wished they could do their hair like that at home.
OMG HEAD BANDS
We have our machine washable bands to keep your hair from your face during your skincare routine or makeup application. They are made from highly absorbent fabric and will protect your hair. This came to me after years of having to bleach out the orange hair line of clients due to a build-up of chemicals from skincare products and makeup.
LUXURY SCRUNCHIES
My next project was my 100% Mulbury silk scrunchies. Our hair extensions can range from £450 to £600, so only the best should be used to protect them when they are tied up. These are strong durable anti-snap hair ties wrapped in silk. They are anti-kink and can be used in all hair types, not just extensions to prevent damage from tying your hair up.
THE DETANGLER BRUSH
I saw the need for a universal brush. It can be used wet or dry and used
to blow-dry. With the anti-snag design, you can brush hair extensions root to tip without pulling or causing damage. It has both intelli-flex bristles covered in poly tips which is proven not to damage hair and within those we have shorter boar bristles which are the gold standard. It’s my favourite from the collection and I use it daily on my own and my daughter hair.
CREASELESS CLIPS
These are a pack of five clips used to pin hair back or create waves and mould hair into shape without causing kinks, dents or lines. They are also exceptionally good for pin curling hair.
THE SCALP MASSAGER
This is a game changer for washing your hair. Perfectly moulded to sit in your palm, it uses gentle silicone tips to stimulate the follicles on the scalp by boosting blood circulation, encouraging all the nutrients to rush to the surface. And the more nutrients available, the more your hair will grow and the healthier it will become. The massaging movement also helps dislodge stubborn product build-up, grease and sweat so you can feel confident your scalp will be sparkly clean when you step out of the shower.
THE PRO CURLER
Our biggest product yet is to be launched at the end of March - our Pro Curler, the easiest way to curl your hair. Create a unique hairstyle and achieve perfect curls. It’s lightweight and cordless with a compact design so you can use it on the go. Best of all it causes no damage as the Ionic Ceramic Coating technology provides better heat distribution meaning it’s perfect for delicate hair. Features include: anti-tangle technology, Ionic ceramic coating, auto-lock system and a heat proof body.

DOODLE DOS AND DON’TS Pet & Country in Ballymoney stocks everything you need to make sure your labradoodle is happy and kept in top condition.
There has been a massive increase in doodle ownership since the first labradoodle in 1989 and it’s obviously why. They are playful, full of fun, but also obedient and intelligent. Some people think doodles do not need groomed, that they are low maintenance, that they are all hypoallergenic, and they do not shed. This is not true, and they need regular grooming to ensure a healthy coat and to maintain their general wellbeing.
for the dog. Nails get worn down with friction when dogs are out walking but during the winter you will tend to find this happens less. -DON’T Forget Conditioner - Conditioner can help loosen and ease knots and tangles in the coat. Choose a moisturising conditioner, something lightweight but nourishing to ensure it doesn’t weigh down the coat but leaves it manageable after bathing.
HERE ARE OUR TOP DOODLE GROOMING DOS AND DON’TS:
DOODLE DOS - DO Encourage grooming from a young age – Introduce your dog to grooming as early as possible as this will help the dog feel less anxious on the grooming table. As doodles need groomed regularly, making sure the grooming processes is enjoyed will make it much easier for them and for the groomer. - DO make regular grooming appointments – Doodle coats benefit from regular professional grooming appointments. Coats longer than an inch need groomed every 4-6 weeks, with daily brushing and checking with a comb. Coats under 1 inch can be groomed every 6-8 weeks with regular brushing. Missing an appointment can result in mats and tangles that can’t be removed, and this may mean the groom has to shave the dog much shorter than you would like. No two doodle coats are identical so chat to your groomer who can advise on how regularly your dog needs to visit. - DO Select the right tools –When looking after your dog’s coat between appointments we recommend using a good slicker brush and a wide spaced pinned comb to help keep your dog’s coat in good condition. These tools are perfect to get into thick curly doodle coats. Chat to our staff in Pet and Country for advice on products and tools for your doodle. - DO Brush – Brushing your dog regularly all over is a must. Make sure you check areas of such as ears, tail, throat and armpits, as these areas experience more friction, and you may find matting in these areas.
DOODLE DON’TS - DON’T Forget their ears – Doodles’ ears must be kept clear of hair so as not to hold moisture that causes ear infections. Excess hair can be plucked from the ear canal and ear wipes can help keep the area clean. - DON’T towel dry or leave the coat to dry naturally as this can result in matting – ensure coat is thoroughly dried and combed after bathing.
If
you’re using a hair dryer make sure this isn’t too hot or close to the dog’s skin. - DON’T Over bathe - Over bathing will strip the doodle’s coat of natural oils and can leave hair and skin dry. - DON’T Neglect the nails - Long nails can turn a good foot into a splayed foot which can cause injured tendons. A splayed foot doesn’t support weight well and this can cause long term problems
In store we have a fantastic new collection from Groom Professional which is perfect for doodle coats - Groom Professional Coconut and Chocolate. These indulgent scents and nourishing products will leave coats fully nourished from start to finish. The Coconut shampoo in this range is a rich conditioning shampoo with organic coconut which will nourish the skin and coat and leave behind a soft and shiny coat. This shampoo is fantastic for doodle breeds PLUS it has a delicious tropical coconut scent. Generally, doodles are wool coated, but varieties exist within that from scruffy to fluffy. All doodle breeds benefit from daily brushing and visits to a groomer to avoid severe matting but at the moment while there are restrictions on grooming appointments using the rich nourishing Coconut shampoo at home will ensure you are left with a clean and manageable coat brush and look after. We recommend starting with Groom Professional Coconut shampoo, followed by the moisturising and Chocolate and Coconut conditioner (an irresistible fragrance combo) to help with unruly coats. Then finish with tropical Coconut cologne.

His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America Dr McComiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life. Each month Dr McComiskey provides Local Women readers with healthcare advice, dispelling some of the many myths surrounding women’s health.
RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE
Each month Dr Mark McComiskey MD MRCOG discusses gynaecological conditions and women’s health issues. Dr Mark McComiskey is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon who trained at the world-famous Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America. Dr McComiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life. Last month Dr McComiskey looked at early pregnancy loss and this month he looks at recurrent miscarriage, when a woman has more than three early pregnancy losses.
WHAT IS RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE? Recurrent miscarriage is usually defined as the loss of three consecutive early pregnancies and very often there is no cause identified.
HOW CAN YOU REDUCE THE CHANCE OF MISCARRIAGE? ● not smoking during pregnancy ● not drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs during pregnancy ● eating a healthy, balanced diet ● try to avoid dangerous infections during pregnancy, such as rubella ● avoid foods during pregnancy that are known to harm the mother or baby ● being a healthy weight before getting pregnant (obesity increases the chance of miscarriage)
TRYING TO FIND THE CAUSE OF RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE Most miscarriages are thought to be caused by a one-off problem with the development of the foetus.
KINGSBRIDGE PRIVATE HOSPITAL Tel: 028 9066 7878 www.kingsbridgeprivatehospital.com
In these cases – the miscarriage could not have been avoided.
HOW DO YOU TREAT AN IDENTIFIED CAUSE OF MISCARRIAGE? If three or more miscarriages in a row have happened - further tests are often used to check for any underlying cause. This is the time that most women will ask their family doctor to refer them to a specialist. However, no cause is found in more than half of cases. If the specialist doctor (usually a gynaecologist) can identify a cause for the miscarriages, then it may be possible to undergo a treatment in order to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.
WHAT TREATMENTS CAN BE UNDERTAKEN TO IMPROVE CHANCES OF A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY? ● Blood testing Blood can be checked for high levels of substances called antiphospholipid antibody and lupus anticoagulant. These antiphospholipid antibodies are known to increase the chance of blood clots. These blood clots and can reduce the blood supply to the foetus, which can cause a miscarriage. Treatment with aspirin and heparin can prevent tiny blood clots in the developing foetus and placenta, hence improving pregnancy outcomes in women with this condition. Disorders of the thyroid gland can cause miscarriage also, these can often be identified by blood tests and treated relatively easily. ● Uterine abnormalities A transvaginal 2D or 3D ultrasound can be used to check the structure of the womb for any abnormalities that may be impairing the growth of a pregnancy. Surgery can be performed in selected cases to restore the anatomy of the womb and reduce miscarriage rates. ● Weakened cervix A weakened cervix (cervical insufficiency) is where the cervix is unable to support the
pregnancy sac to stay within the uterus. Ultrasound scanning during the early weeks of pregnancy can check for a weakened cervix. A weakened cervix can sometimes be treated with an operation to put a small stitch of strong thread around the cervix to keep it closed. The cervical stitch is usually carried out after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. ● Chromosome testing (karyotyping) If recurrent miscarriage occurs, the foetus can be tested for abnormalities in the chromosomes (strands of DNA). If a subsequent genetic abnormality is found within the foetus, the mother and father can also be blood tested for abnormalities within the chromosomes that could be causing the problem. If karyotyping detects problems within the parental chromosomes, then referral to a genetics doctor would be recommended.
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF HAVING A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY FOLLOWING A MISCARRIAGE? Despite the fact that a single miscarriage is common, only 1% of the population suffer from recurrent miscarriage. This means that after one or even two miscarriages, the most likely outcome is that the next pregnancy will not end in a loss. Progestogen therapy has relatively recently been shown to benefit women with recurrent miscarriage – helping to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

KELLY’S PATCH SAUVIGNON BLANC ‘ZIPPY, FULL BODIED WITH FRUIT AROMAS’
Kellyʼs Patch Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc (all four wines are 100% of their varietal) and is a well balanced medium bodied wine, full of tropical fruit aromas and flavours like passion fruit, pineapple as well as zippy gooseberry and there are slight herby hints like when you cut into a fresh green pepper. This is an easy drinking white, great on its own but would go well with fish, chicken or salads.

A modern mine for Tyrone Our project brings new investment, new jobs and new prospects for the local community Dalradian Gold has been working in County Tyrone for a decade, exploring the potential of one of the world’s most promising undeveloped gold deposits. There are also substantial quantities of silver and copper. We’re proud of the work that we have done with the local community during this time. We have created up to 120 jobs to date, funded over 400 local groups through our Dalradian Community Fund, and are coordinating with South West College to develop new training programs. We intend to do much more. Once approved, our project is set to create up to 1,000 jobs in the local economy, provide £15 million for training local people, and channel £4 million to local community projects. We intend to do all this with minimal impact on the local environment. Our operations are designed to be carbon-neutral, blend with the landscape, and take painstaking care with water. For more information, or to show your support for the project, please visit dalradian.com
1,000 jobs will be created during operations, on site and in the local area.
Every drop of water used in the mining process will be sourced on site, recycled and treated prior to discharge to protect the environment.
£15 million investment in training for local jobs during the first 3 years of the project.
£4 million committed to future funding of local community projects.
£40k average salary across a wide range of roles including drivers, accountants, miners and environmental technicians.
£750 million spend on the supply chain.

Our lockdown story: We got married in December after initially postponing our wedding from 31/07/20. We had been planning our ceremony for January but when we saw the new restrictions announced on Thursday, 18th December, we decided we had to get married before Christmas. With four days to plan our wedding, we didn’t know who would be available to attend but we were surrounded by 25 of our closest friends and family (some unfortunately couldn’t attend due to isolating) but it was the most relaxing and enjoyable day. We couldn’t have asked for better!

Our lockdown story: As we were in lockdown, a reception wasn’t possible. We had chosen The Royal Hotel, Cookstown. They provided us with meals to take away for our family and the service was second to none. My husband and I delivered everyone their dinner on the evening of our wedding to each house.

Our lockdown wedding story: Our wedding story hasn’t been simple to say the least. We were originally meant to get married back on the 4th April, 2020. Before Christmas, as we approached our third wedding date of 5th March, we decided we would secretly get married before that with our little dog and the two families in case there happened to be another lockdown that would have meant postponing our weddings plans yet again. We are never going to give up on our dream wedding at Galgorm, so we kept this wedding low key and completely different to how our wedding party will actually look - we weren’t giving away any clues! This was also one of the reasons why I didn’t wear my wedding dress. With restrictions, numbers were limited and

I didn’t want extended family or close friends to see my wedding dress in a picture for the first time. I want everyone including myself to experience that feeling of the first look. I know your wedding dress is what most people say you should get married in but Kyle and I both agreed to save it. It didn’t matter what we wore when we said ‘I do’, we love each other and no matter what, it was still going to one of the happiest days of our lives. This also went for our bridal party, we decided that Day 1 wedding would only consist of our little family, Bride, Groom and the most adorable Best Man whilst Day 2 will consist of our bridal party in their full wedding attire!
happier, the fact that we know our full wedding day is still ahead of us just makes us even more excited! We can’t wait!
Linda from Leaf Designs is like my fairy godmother. How amazing were her displays? Never mind the bouquet. We also asked our wee Gemma (Gemma’s Cookie Co) and her lovely hubby, John (John Bakes Cakes) to make us up some cookie favours and boxes of cupcakes in some of our wedding cake flavours that we have chosen. We thought this would be a nice touch to give to our families as a little taster for Day 2. I think one of the reasons that we have stayed so upbeat during this wedding process is because of the support we Galgorm were nothing short of amazing get from suppliers like these. and we are so grateful that we were able to get married in our special place with Why have one wedding day when you our loved ones! MEET THE
DESIGNERS
At Elle Designs there is a team of talented designers who are passionate about helping you create a home that is beautiful, stylish, and functional. LOUISE MCKENNA Louise studied Interior Architecture and completed a BSc Hons in Interior Design before starting her career as a commercial interior designer specialising in the hospitality sector. As owner of Elle Designs, she still works on commercial design but specialises now in residential, from prebuild to completion.
What has been your favourite project? There are a few that stand out but undoubtably a 37,000 sq. ft. home in Lancashire. I was the sole designer for the 17-bathroom home that I worked on from plan to stage through to furnishing every room, down to supplying their bespoke bedding and towel ranges that have the royal warrant. Almost 10 years later I still get called to source additional pieces. I love building that special relationship with our clients.
What is your signature style? My personal style is very different from our signature style - my personal style is dark and moody. I love antiques and collecting interesting objects. I love bold prints in small areas and plush tactile textures mixed with classic elements. My design icons would be Kit Kemp and Abigail Ahern, However our signature style at Elle Designs is representative of the client, to suit their home, their taste and budget.
What styles will emerge as 2021 progresses? The function of the home has changed so much in the past year that we feel differently about it aesthetically. It’s not just a place to put your head down but now a place of work and entertainment. Our biggest trend with clients in the past year has been garden rooms, man caves, cinema rooms and social spaces. This will continue throughout 2021. We can see more investment being put into the home as families want more from it. We look forward to welcoming family and friends back into our homes and want a space to be proud of. 110 | Local Women Magazine
EMMA ALLEN
Emma graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone college of Art and Design with an honours degree in Textile Design in 2003. In her final year she specialised in interior textiles and went on to secure an interior design job in Jenners of Edinburgh. There she worked for Mulberry Home, a brand whose style she still loves with their classic prints and rich weaves and embroideries. Her experience of working in beautiful Georgian townhouses has shaped her personal taste and style, giving her an appreciation and love for historical features. Emma joined Elle designs in January 2018.
What is your signature style? At Elle Designs we don’t dictate that our clients adopt a particular look,
preferring to cater to their individual tastes. We are versatile and equally experienced designing for very contemporary homes as well as more traditional tastes. My personal taste is classic and elegant. I love pattern and both rich and muted colour, particularly heritage florals, wool tartans, and herringbones, combined with different textures to add interest.
What timeless looks never go out of fashion? I love to gather and combine antique furniture with other classically styled pieces. Items such as a vintage leather armchair or a sideboard, a Persian carpet or a restored antique occasional chair upcycled with wool upholstery can bring character, warmth, and interest to a room. I love when a room tells a story about the people who live there, including pieces with sentimental value.
MARY CONROY
Mary studied Interior Design with Spatial Awareness at Ulster University. She completed a placement year at CoCo Interiors, Dungannon, before beginning her career at Starlighting Interiors in Monaghan, A year later she became Principal Designer with Turkington Interiors, Cookstown, before moving to Elle Designs.
What is your signature style? My style varies as I fall in love with new fabrics, but I would describe myself as a transitional designer, borrowing both traditional and modern styles to create a sumptuous space.
What has been your favourite project? I have enjoyed all my commissions. However, my favourite was a stylish self-build in Donaghmore. The sleek straight lines of this stunning home allowed me to play with a more minimalistic style. Steel greys and exposed steel beams with sheers and statement rugs, and furniture to make the home pop.
What styles will emerge as 2021 progresses? The interior design industry was heavily saturated with dark navy and emerald green last year, so I am really looking forward to the introduction of more earthy, grounded shades and warmer colours. I am really excited about the addition of rustic vogue styles, a more sophisticated take on Cottagecore.
