SAUVIGNON BLANC

This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley Eastern Australia from our own vineyards. Following delivery and crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Sauvignon Blanc juice was cold settled and racked. An aromatic yeast was used for inocculation and this parcel was cool fermented for 7 days. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant showing lovely tropical fruit flavours with a hint of typical herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc characters.

CHARDONNAY

The fruit for the Kelly’s Patch Chardonnay was sourced from the Goulburn Valley on the vineyards neighbouring the winery. This region has long, warm sunny days and mild evening temperatures which are perfect for the growing of good quality Chardonnay. The grapes were harvested during the cool of the night to maintain fruit freshness and gently pressed to minimise phenolic characters. The wine was fermented in various parcels, with a small portion receiving careful oak treatment, with extended lees contact to build structure yet retain good fruit balance.

PINOT GRIGIO

This wine is made from a blend of fruit grown in the Goulburn Valley and South East Australia from a combination of our own vineyards and our contract growers. Following crushing of the grapes during the cool of the night, the Pinot Grigio juice is cold settled and racked clean ready for fermentation. An aromatic yeast was used for inoculation and the juice is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is fresh and vibrant displaying applesand pears with floral spicy notes. The palate is clean, displaying green crunchy fruit with a crisp long finish.

MERLOT

The grapes for this Merlot were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout. Much of Merlot’s popularity is derived from its juicy flavours, and mellow mouth feel. Therefore, this wine was fermented in rotary fermenters, which helped bring out the wonderful colour and flavours, but ensured that the tannins were soft and fine. Minimal oak handling was also an important feature inclusion of the winemaking allowing for the fruit to be the primary feature of this wine. The of some central Victorian fruit in the blend has further intensified both the colour and flavour, creating a wine of increased complexity and quality.

SHIRAZ

The grapes for this Shiraz were picked and crushed during the cool of night, thus ensuring the retention of varietal character, while modern winemaking techniques were employed throughout, all of which help to create the signature McPherson style. Fermentation took place in sweeping arm red fermenters, giving the wine a denser, richer colour and allowing for gentle flavour extraction. Softer tannins are also a result of this process, an important feature of the McPherson Shiraz style. Careful attention was also paid to the oak selection for the Shiraz. This wine was aged on American oak for approximately 8 months, giving the wine a noticeable, but not an excessive oak influence. The inclusion of some central Victorian fruit into the blend has boosted both the colour.

KELLY’S GANG SHIRAZ

Kelly’s Gang Shiraz is bold and full of flavour. The nose displays sweet plums, cassis, chocolate and spice. The exuberant palate delivers ripe berry fruit along with a touch of pepper and spice. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 3-4 years. Enjoy with pizza, pasta or your favourite BBQ dish.

KELLY’S GANG SAUVIGNON BLANC

Kelly’s Gang Sauvignon Blanc is vibrant and refreshing. The nose displays lifted passionfruit and citrus notes. The fruit forward palate delivers ripe fruit flavours balanced by some lovely crisp acidity on the finish. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 2-3 years. Enjoy with salads or your favourite seafood dish.

KELLY’S GANG The Last Word

Christmas isn’t cancelled! I know it seems up in the air right now, but one thing is sure - Christmas is coming and we need to get ready. That’s why, this month at Local Women we are launching an appeal for our readers to shop local this festive season.

Making a meal of it…with McAtamneys

Whether you buy your presents at local businesses on the High Street or at their premises, or online via their websites, it’s never been so important to support local. There are so many local, family-run independent traders who are ready and waiting to help you out this Christmas.

I’m not going to lie - I can’t cook very well.

Only at a locally run businesses will you get the customer service and quality that will make your Christmas shopping that bit easier.

So, when McAtamneys Butchers invited me to make a steak dinner at home, I felt a bit anxious.

And spending your money in your local community means that you are ensuring businesses survive, jobs are retained, and your area thrives for generations to come. In Local Women this month we are showcasing scores of local businesses that have Christmas all wrapped up for you. Fabulous pharmacies, brilliant boutiques, quirky gift shops and artisan producers are all working hard to keep things as normal as possible during these strange times. Most are also trading online this year, so you don’t even have to leave your house to lend your support. There are so many gift ideas right on your doorstep and many local councils are running shop local schemes with promotions and offers galore. And, if some of your favorite businesses are closed due to the restrictions, please consider supporting them by buying a gift voucher. This Christmas I would love a gift voucher for my favourite hairdresser, beautician, spa, restaurant, or hotel, which I can enjoy when things feel a bit more normal. There are some great offers out there right now as you will see when you take a flick through this month’s Local Women. I think you will be surprised at what is on offer so close to your home. I know that I never cease to be amazed at the independent businesses springing up all over the place. So, whether we are in tier 1, 2 or 3, level 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, lockdown, fire break or circuit break (I know, I know!), one thing is constant – our local communities are vitally important. Let’s work together to keep our communities vibrant and thriving and give them a little help this Christmas. Until next month,

I definitely used to enjoy cooking but in recent years I have lost my passion and really can’t be bothered – but luckily McAtamneys makes everything so easy. Forget about peeling and chopping, they take the stress out of cooking, which is perfect when you want fresh food that is hassle free. All the produce at McAtamneys is locally sourced and of the highest quality. They simply pre-prepare it for your convenience. It’s so easy – I pop the pre-prepared champ and tobacco onions into the oven and put the pepper sauce into the microwave while I heat up the skillet pan for the steaks. Within 20 minutes I have two homemade steak dinners ready to go – even I couldn’t mess this up! With minimal effort I have prepared two home made dinners that are packed full of freshness and flavour. McAtamneys has a full range of fresh pre-prepared meals on offer. This is not convenience food but rather fresh food that is very convenient. It is perfect for busy lives and really takes the stress out of cooking.

With ongoing safety measures in place due to Covid-19 , many KRD Credit Union members have switched to online for convenience 24 hours a day. Hope you are all keeping well amidst the madness of this latest lockdown! Having the health and safety of our staff and members at the heart of how we do business means that now more than ever, we must give careful consideration to the footfall into our three offices on a daily basis. With this in mind, we had a very different International Credit Union Day this year at KRD. International Credit Union Day is a day to celebrate all things Credit Union all over the world. Normally we plan a day of entertainment where our members pop in to enjoy light refreshments, a chat and generally have fun as our staff host an office party. At KRD CU this year, amidst our new normal that has been put in place, it was very different. We still had the normal yearly prize draw, and we were blown away by the interest it received on our social media platforms. Congratulations to our three winners of £100 each. I would invite you all to go on to our social media and like our page for more of this type of activity over the coming months/years as we continue to do business in a different way, but with the utmost care and attention to member service and care. Another fantastic event is the art competition which again is an annual event for our members. We yet again this year have welcomed entrants into the art competition from members and non-members and of course, from our local schools who are instrumental in getting our Credit Union message across to the youth of today – who of course are our savers and borrowers of the future. I am absolutely delighted to see a large percentage of our new members joining online – this option is proving extremely popular and suits everyone; not just with the times we are in, but also suits those of you who are busy with work or family commitments.

KRD Credit Union Ltd are proud to say we are open 24/7 now with our online services! You can become a new member, apply for a loan, pay by card to your savings or your loan, and much, much more! We are all excited for what the future holds here at KRD Credit Union and the growth that is ahead! At the moment, looking to the brighter days ahead is what we are choosing to do! Until next month!

utting down on our single use plastics and recycling are about as far as most of us go in our efforts to reduce the harm we are doing to the planet. But Dunloy mum Ursula McGarry is so passionate about green issues that she has started a business dedicated to helping the environment. Her zero-waste shop The Balanced Pantry allows us all to do our bit to help and offers plastic free alternatives and food without packaging. And north Antrim shoppers have taken The Balanced Pantry to their hearts and are flocking to the store that promotes sustainable living. People find their own paths and I love it when someone makes a swap based on a conversation that we have had at some stage. My sister recently had a baby and has made the swap to cloth wipes because I mentioned them, and my parents come into the shop to drop off their recycling and bring their own containers when shopping. It’s all these little things that trigger change on a big scale.

How has the pandemic impacted on your business? I closed the shop for about seven weeks and when I reopened, I found that lockdown had given a lot of people the opportunity to realise how much waste they create as a household or notice how much litter people throw on the ground. One of the main things that people had taken issue with is people throwing disposable masks on the streets. Many of my customers were coming into buy reusable masks because they were so aware of the waste. So, in some ways, there has been a positive impact from lockdown.

can be collected such as crisp packets, bread bags etc. There are lots of collection points all over the place and The Balanced Pantry is one of them. Be mindful of waste throughout the day, whether that is packaging, food, water or electricity. Don’t try to change everything at once. CHRISTMAS JOY FOR TANYA

It was a dream come true for Tanya Cunningham when she became the owner of Stewart’s Jewellers in Strabane and, now she is working hard to get ready for the Christmas rush. By Kim Kelly Pictures by Gerard Gormley Late nights, long hours and lots of customers needing help - jeweller Tanya Cunningham can’t wait for the Christmas rush! As owner of Stewart’s Jewellers in Castle Street in Strabane, Tanya is looking forward to helping her customers find the perfect Christmas presents after a stressful year for everyone. And with stunning jewellery and unique gift ideas, coupled with wonderful personal service, Stewart’s is a firm favourite with her loyal client base. “Being the boss of this well-established business is a joy and I am so proud of everything I have achieved. I love my job because I love jewellery and I enjoy meeting people. It’s a dream come true,” says Tanya. 2020 has been a roller coaster year for small businesses, but Tanya is thankful to her loyal customers in Strabane and further afield who have supported her through the pandemic when at times the shop has had to shut. And this year Tanya from Donemana is more aware than ever for the need to shop local and support the traders in her town. Family businesses such as Stewart’s Jewellers are the beating heart of any small town in Northern Ireland. “As business owners it’s important to support each other so we can make sure we will all still be here and make our town the best we possibly can for people who visit us. “Our customers are very loyal,” says Tanya. “We tend to see them coming back and as a result, we are on first name terms with all of them. “Shopping local has never been so important and we value each and every one of our customers.” 20 | Local Women Magazine

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE JEWELLER BUSINESS? I was in my final year at Strabane High School when my careers teacher told the class about a part-time job that was available at a local jewellery shop. I knew I wanted to work in retail and thought the weekend position sounded perfect. I got the job and soon found myself not just selling jewellery but helping out with repairs and jewellery displays. I found that I had a knack for it and enjoyed the buzz of meeting customers and helping them choose that special piece.

HOW DID YOU COME TO OWN STEWART’S JEWELLERS? I worked in retail for years then about 10 years ago, I got a job in Stewart’s Jewellers working in sales and repairs and I worked within the family business for seven years. When the owner, who had inherited the shop from his father, decided it was time to retire, he offered us the chance to take the business on. I jumped at the chance The business has been in the town for 70 years this year and I took over two and a half years ago. Baby it’s cold outside - Elite’s top 13 tips to protect your skin

TM

Adapt your skincare routine with Emma Heaney’s amazing tips for glowing skin this autumn and winter. TIP 4: Don’t forget to exfoliate regularly with a gentle exfoliator or chemical exfoliator - avoid the scrubs. Trans-seasonal skin can often become dry, flaky and generally temperamental. Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week. A build-up of dead skin cells can dull your skin’s radiance and clog follicles, often leading to congestion and breakouts.

Recommend: Elite Glow TIP 5: Reduce your acids and retinol.

By Emma Heaney, Elite Aesthetic Clinic RN RM PHNS INP

Revamping your wardrobe based on the season is something most of us do habitually as the temperature changes, but many can neglect to do the same thing with their skincare. Your skin definitely has a different set of needs come autumn and winter - the air has less humidity which can upset the skin’s balance and central heating can strip skin of more moisture. Autumn and winter are notoriously bad seasons for our complexion. With the harsh conditions our skin can face issues such as dullness, dehydration, flakiness, and dryness.

Skin becomes drier and more sensitive during the winter. You might think that exfoliation would worsen dryness, but it’s important to keep at it – just tone down the strength a little to avoid potential irritation as your skin’s sensitivity changes.

AESTHETIC TREATMENT CLINIC

TIP 9: Invest in a moisturiser. Think of your moisturiser as the skin’s equivalent to your winter coat. We have launched Elite Ultimate Rebalance to combat Maskne. This powerhouse endurance moisturiser will hydrate, protect and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier and reduce inflammation keeping it in peak condition. TIP 10: Still use SPF. Even though the sun may not appear to be as strong as those bright summer days, harmful UVA and UVB rays still penetrate the clouds causing skin cell damage, premature ageing and potentially skin cancer. Apply SPF as the very last step in your skincare routine.

Recommend: Elite Protect. TIP 11: Love your lips. Your lips don’t have oil glands,

so they’re almost always exposed to the elements. Don’t lick your lips! Treat severe peeling and cracks right away and don’t forget to apply lip balm before you go to bed also.

Recommend: Elite Recover. TIP 6: Add vitamin C to your routine. Every skincare regime benefits from vitamin C which can brighten a dull complexion, reduce pigmentation, add glow, stimulate collagen production and increase skin’s overall health.

Recommend: Elite C20

I feel it is all about rebalancing levels of hydration and moisturisation. Instead of using more products, think about revising the way you use your current products.

night. Your foaming cleanser may have done wonders for freshening up your complexion over the summer months, but now the cooler weather’s here it may be time to move to a cream cleanser. This will remove your make-up while deeply cleansing, giving your skin the comfort and nourishment it needs, rather than stripping it.

TIP 8: Introduce a hydrating mask. If your

skin is super oily and acne prone, then avoid this tip. Otherwise this can be introduced two to three times a week.

eating a well balance diet and taking supplements are essential, but this could be a full topic on its own . We just love the concept of Skinade - beautiful skin from within. I know we love a hot shower on a cold day; however, it not only dries out your skin, but it also irritates and damages the Keratin cells, creating dry skin and preventing these cells lock in moisture.

ART IN A TIME OF LOCKDOWN

President of The Ulster Society of Women Artists Judith Logan from Broughshane explains how Covid-19 has changed the face of art as the 63rd annual show goes online.

ust before lockdown in March, artist Judith Logan, who has her own studio/gallery, The BlackSheep, at her home in Broughshane, was elected as the new President of The Ulster Society of Women Artists.

ƒ SWA President Judith Logan in her studio.

While she was already feeling a mix of excitement and nerves about taking on this role, the onslaught of COVID-19 and lockdown certainly added to the challenge. Organising events for a society with a current membership of around 100, can already be a daunting task, but the forced closures of public venues, and the uncertainty of reopening with ever-changing rules and restrictions, makes it doubly difficult. It is so encouraging to see that several artists have been able to set up physical solo exhibitions again, but a larger group show is much more challenging under these new circumstances, and unfortunately previews and opening nights have been affected. Last year the society had a fantastic exhibition held in The Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast, with a great footfall and several sales. This year, however, their previously booked venue was cancelled, and so it was decided to go online. This is not without its difficulties though. Several older members are understandably not comfortable using social media platforms, and/or have been unable to get guidance in using them.

Making art can be a solitary business, so I think it is vitally important we stay in touch however we can. I am hugely grateful to my wonderful team on council, especially Past President, Sorrel Wills, who is in charge of our website now, and is the one responsible for putting our online show together.”

For one thing, the duration of virtual exhibitions is not limited as it is in brick and mortar buildings, so the work can be displayed for longer periods of time. Costs are generally cut as well, since there are no or reduced entry or hanging fees, and no rental fees. Perhaps one of the biggest pluses is that the potential audience is much greater, spanning not only cities and towns, but countries too. It has been a huge learning curve for all of us, not least myself, but I am proud of my fellow artists. It has been a difficult time. Some have found that creativity has flowed, while others have struggled with motivation. I see it as my job to encourage the membership to continue to make art, to support them by promoting their work and any shows or events they might

Regain Your Confidence With Mesh Integration Owner of IHobbs Salon and Academy, Sandra Atoge is passionate about giving women back their confidence. Here she discusses the Mesh Integration System which is perfect for those suffering from patchy hair loss and severe hair thinning due to Alopecia and other conditions WHAT IS MESH INTEGRATION? Mesh integration provides excellent hair replacement solutions for those with thinning hair or patchy hair loss because the effect of hair loss can be absolutely devastating. These Hair Integration Systems can only be described as state-of-the-art hair enhancement systems that adds any amount of fullness, length and body to your existing hair, without damaging your fragile hair. They are feather-light, secure and completely undetectable. They are created with the finest 100% natural human hair to precisely match the colour, texture and length of your own hair. Our hair integration systems do not inhibit the growth of your own hair in any way and they stand up to a busy, active lifestyle. Mesh Integration Systems are non-surgical procedures which involve blending the existing hair with real hair that is attached to a custom-made ‘unit’. This unit, made of ultra-fine, soft mesh and shaped to fit your diffuse androgenetic alopecia. They are also a perfect solution for women unique head shape is cleverly and with severe to extreme hair thinning in the hairline and/or anterior middiscreetly secured to the head using scalp hair loss. micro beads. Mesh Integration Systems as a hair loss solution has become a popular choice for many because of the result - a full head of hair – is immediate. The main advantage of Mesh Integration System over other systems is the fact that the system can be blended with your hair in just about any direction to be able to give you just the style you want – beautiful, natural, and realistic looking hair every day. At iHobbs, we use our unique Integration Systems to solve a variety of women’s hair loss issues including being used to supplement hair in just the crown area, adding volume to the top of the head while maximizing the use of existing hair at the back; a particularly good solution for women suffering from

Our Mesh Integration Systems can also be adopted to any part of the clients’ head that needs volume. So, for clients with alopecia on other parts of their head, not just at the crown, our Hair Integration Systems can be used to cover these patches for a seamless finish. OUR MESH INTEGRATION SYSTEMS CAN HELP… • Enhance the appearance of your hair. • Prevent the need to remove or cut your existing hair. • Avoid wearing full coverage hair pieces or wigs. • Regain a full head of hair without surgery. • Easily maintain the unit with the occasional help of a skilled hair consultant. Because the system involves using your own growing hair, Our Hair Systems have proven to restore the confidence of wearers. iHobbs Salon is an award-winning salon with the expertise to offer nine different methods of hair extensions applications. We also have qualified hairdressers for general hair dressing. MOVING HOUSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Mayfair & Morgan advise on the latest safety guidelines for sales and lettings during the Covid-19 restrictions.

2020 has been a very uncertain time for property owners and tenants. The rules and restrictions on viewings, new move ins and property related appointments have changed several times this year.

PROPERTY INSPECTIONS At present property inspections, repair and maintenance work can be carried out at properties.

To help clarify the current adjustments that need to be made, the ladies at Mayfair & Morgan have highlighted the key points to adhere to here in Northern Ireland.

Previous notice must be given, and social distancing must be followed as well as the safe working practices adhered to which include regular hand washing, cleaning surfaces and wearing a face covering when possible.

ESTATE AGENT APPOINTMENTS

At present, you can attend appointments at your estate agent’s office. You must wear a face covering but you must stay home if you have any symptoms or if you have to selfisolate. You will be asked to complete a track and trace form if you make an appointment to meet with your estate agent.

A GUIDE ON VIEWINGS FOR INTERESTED RENTERS OR BUYERS • In the first instance, viewings should be done virtually. • To arrange a viewing in person, you must make an appointment. and arrive on time as there may be other viewings or other appointments the agent needs to attend and the agent needs time to carry out required cleaning before anyone arrives. • At present, (for rentals) we insist on receiving an application for a rental property prior to a physical viewing, and we will only arrange a viewing once the necessary checks have been carried out, this is to limit viewers when the property is still occupied and to keep our staff safe. • For potential buyers, we will obtain sufficient information to ensure they are in a buying position, and offer virtual viewings before a physical viewing is scheduled. • We are currently restricted to two households per property at the time of viewings, if the current occupants are staying in the property, then

If the occupant is self-isolating, the only reason anyone is permitted to enter the property is to remedy a direct risk that affects their safety and that of their household.

only the viewers are allowed inside. If you want the agent to host the viewing, then the current occupants will need to wait outside. • Children are discouraged from attending viewings at this time, anyone in a support bubble with the viewer is counted as part of the household and can therefore attend with the viewer. • All doors should be left open and cleaned before and after the viewing. • Social distancing must be followed by all parties, face coverings are to be worn and where possible, disposable gloves.

The restrictions may change as they have previously, so the best advice we can give is to visit your local government website where they will explain the current guidance in your area and if in doubt send us an email or call us and we can help with any concerns you may have. Everybody’s safety is paramount, and it is best practice to be cautious rather than to risk the health of our loved ones. The team at Mayfair & Morgan extend our gratitude to all the key workers and the NHS staff and encourage everyone to stay safe by following the guidance to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

• Hand washing facilities and paper towels for drying should be provided at the viewing or hand sanitiser for the viewers to use. • Open viewings are not permitted at present. • If the current occupants are self-isolating then viewings must not take place. At present, there are no shielding measures in place, therefore those who were initially unable to have people in their homes currently can by adhering to the above points.

HELPING PROPERTY INVESTORS MEET THEIR GOALS If you want to start a new career in property investment it pays to work with the best estate agents. Mayfair & Morgan offers great advice on making the most of your money.

the average rental prices, the number of rentals in the area, housing demand, rental void periods, and also look at the local amenities in each area together with any development plans in the pipeline. You want a property that will appeal to both tenants and buyers. On that basis, we recommend an area located close to shops, schools and transport links as well as a property with the right features tenants love, such as off street parking, a garage, storage space and outdoor areas.

SHOULD I BUY A PROPERTY THAT IS A LOWER PRICE THAN OTHERS? Properties on a lower price point and positioned next to major amenities, lifestyle features and with rising incomes in the area are likely to perform better in the long run. It’s generally easier to sell a property in an affordable location than an expensive one. Examine the property in detail to see if it has the potential to be renovated, subdivided, extended or redeveloped in the future.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT? HOW DO I GET INTO PROPERTY INVESTMENT? There is no ‘one size fits all’ so research and network with other property investors, as well as contacting an experienced estate agent are good places to start. Know your current financial position, your risk profile, income levels, savings, credit score and equity as they all have a part to play in determining what your chosen strategy should be. Are you investing for short, medium or longer-term returns? Are you hoping to achieve a regular income or a lump sum return? Do you want to carry out renovation work or are you looking for no initial expenditure when you purchase a property? Have clear goals so you are not swayed by glossy marketing brochures.

WHERE SHOULD I CONSIDER BUYING PROPERTY?

We like to pick projects that will deliver a growth rate of over 7%. Combine this with a 5%+ rental yield and you should earn a total return on the property asset of at least 12% pa. This is only a drop in the ocean of property investment so for further advice and details, we recommend coming in and chatting with one of our team. We have been in the business for 40 years and have assisted hundreds of investors meet their goals on their property journey.

Property is all about buying within a budget that will deliver the best capital growth and yield. When deciding where to buy, research is key. Study geographic housing trends which are readily available online. Again, contact a good agent who knows the areas you are keen to consider. Do you want to invest locally so you can be readily available or further afield if returns are greater? Carry out research on your preferred location, what are

After graduating university with a BA Hons in Humanities, Samantha Stewart has just started a new career as a classroom assistant in a local primary school. Having worked in accounts for over 12 years, she decided she need a complete change.

ƒ Coleraine’s Samantha Stewart has undergone a career change after studying at Northern Regional College. She has just started a new role as a classroom assistant in a local primary school.

“I always loved working with children, so I took the decision to enrol on the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning at Northern Regional College,” Samantha explained. “Even though I’m now in my 40s, I can say for the first time that I’ve doing something that I really enjoy. By undertaking this course, I learnt so much about how to support children in a school setting. It also included placements in a local school, so I felt confident about starting my new career,” she continued. Samantha said the course, which she undertook at the College’s Ballymoney campus, had given her the confidence to do new things and that she would have no hesitation recommending it and encouraging other mature students to go back to the books. She continued: “There was so much I enjoyed about the course and it was well balanced between classroom learning and placement, which gave us an opportunity to apply what we were learning in class to a real-life situation. It was fantastic to meet new people of different ages and backgrounds and we all benefited from learning about each other’s experiences and knowledge.

‘PAGEANTS HAVE GIVEN ME CONFIDENCE’ 18-YEAR-OLD REBECCA KEYS FROM EGLINTON TELLS LOCAL WOMEN ABOUT HER JOURNEY WITH PAGEANTS AND SHOWS OFF HER LATEST MODELLING PICTURES. Pictures by Kevin Morrison @ Event Images Tell us a little about yourself. I am currently studying health sciences at NWRC as I hope to be a midwife someday. In my spare time, I go to the Rainbow School of Dance where I study ballet, acrobatics, tap, modern and lyrical. I am currently preparing for my intermediate grades. I also enjoy babysitting my little cousin Kevin Og and I love to do fundraising for different charities. I am currently fundraising for Foyle Search and Rescue as it is an amazing charity. Why did you decide to enter a pageant? I wanted to raise awareness for mental health issues. I saw an advert for Miss Shining Light on Facebook and I instantly wanted more information about it. After a conversation with the two directors I was sold. Tell us about your journey with pageants? I started my pageant journey in September last year and things have moved pretty fast since I won Miss Shining Light. I went on to the Pure International pageant in England in January of this year and won Miss Pure Ireland. I will go and represent Ireland in the internationals in July of next year. Sadly, it has been called off until next year. I am so excited as it has and will continue to 40 | Local Women Magazine

open so many doors for me. I have even been given the opportunity to walk at New York Fashion Week. What has the experience taught you? This experience has taught me so many things. One of them is to do what I want to do and do what makes me happy. Since competing in pageants my confidence levels have boosted so much. Before I would shy away and refuse to speak to anyone. There was a time when I wouldn’t even order my own food in a restaurant because I was so scared to. Since doing pageants my sense of style has got better and I dress how I want to dress. I want to stand out and be different. What would you say to any girl reading this who wants to enter a pageant? Do it - you will not regret it. I have made some lifelong friends through pageants and they support me, and I support them. Amazing opportunities come from pageants - some have won modelling contracts or holidays, and some have even won cash prizes. But the one thing that is the most rewarding is the confidence boost it gives you. It is amazing. As a teenager, how has this year been for you? MAKE TIME TO BE HEALTHY… OR MAKE TIME TO BE ILL

During this global health crisis it has never been so important to take care of your body. Expert personal Trainer Gordy Elliott knows that putting yourself number one, eating well and taking regular exercise will reap rewards. If you are reading this and nodding your head and saying, “That’s it I’m starting!” Then it’s time to follow it through - should it be better food choices, better sleep, more time to do what makes you happy, a walk in the evening to clear the head or indeed joining a gym ( I know a decent one!) then get to it.

When a light flashes on the dashboard of your car you think, “I must get that fixed,” and off to the mechanic you go. But, when a light comes on against your health markers and you begin to feel unwell, more often than not absolutely nothing changes. You simply say to yourself, “Augh, it will be rightly,” (said in my best Ulster Scots twang). We do not value our health enough when it comes to what we put into our bodies “I’VE NO TIME!” This is the biggest bugbear of my personal training career. As I always say, “If you haven’t time to be healthy, then you best make time to be ill.” It is that simple.

Your health is way more important than social media, way more important than what house is being sold in Selling Sunset on Netflix and for sure it’s way more important than being scared to tell people ‘No, I don’t have time,’ as you’re looking after yourself for a change.

HELLO GENTLEMEN! Next month I’m going to cover males (bit weird for a female magazine). But men will not listen - FACT! So, my idea is to educate the mums, sisters, wives and girlfriends reading this to spot the signs of how the males in your life could be much healthier with some simple steps. And when it comes hormones in a relationship, if both parties are working with optimal hormonal levels then everyone is a winner!

Natural gas the perfect backdrop for a bustling family home in the heart of Magheralin If you are part of the burgeoning sewing community in Northern Ireland, simply have an interest in craft, or local fashion design, the name Angeline Murphy might just ring a bell. One of the first contenders in the BBC’s hit programme the Great British Sewing Bee, Angeline currently runs her craft blog, all while juggling a demanding marketing job with firmus energy. Perhaps, more importantly, she also runs a very busy family home with husband Feargal and sons Luke (3) Eoin (11 months).

A firmus energy advisor came out and I filled out all the forms. Then I got in touch with a variety of installers to see if they could, and when they would be able, to do the job. I worked with Thomas Hynes of Hynes Plumbing and Heating and his team were brilliant. There was no mess “I’ve worked for firmus energy for 10 and no fuss and they were in and out years in marketing so of course I have within a day. I simply let them in to my been telling everyone about the benefits house in the morning and took myself off of natural gas for quite some time. I really for the day. So it was only The benefits were felt immediately by the As someone who enjoys a challenge, it’s natural that I would be one of the first to whole family. Angeline admits that her first no surprise to anyone who knows her that have it installed when it became available born is a very lively three year old. the middle of winter.” She said. “In fact it was the arrival of my second child that prompted me to push ahead and get the gas in as quickly as possible. Who doesn’t want to have a cosy home and all the other advantages that natural gas brings, when there is a new addition on the way?”

Angeline continues. “I suddenly had all this extra space as the oil tank, water cylinders and boiler had been removed as part of the install. That meant we could reconfigure the space into extra storage and a new play area for Luke in the garden which has certainly been well used over the past year.”

The Murphy family; Angeline, Feargal, Luke and Eoin.

I also chose smart controls with my system which means I can turn off and on my heating when we were out and about so I always come home to a warm home and I don’t waste energy because I can switch off our heating on demand if we are going to be late home or if our plans change. Indeed this feature was to become critical to the family in the months ahead. Looking back the date of the install was timely too. Angeline says. “My second son Eoin was born just a few weeks later and of course the demands of a new baby take priority so it was great to have the reassurance of having an always-on energy source that is clean and reliable. Unlike oil, I never run out and don’t have to deal with the hassle of refilling my tank all at once. And of course there’s the moral argument too. Natural gas has nearly 50% less carbon emissions than oil, so it’s cleaner and better for the environment. Human’s impact on the environment is something that Luke is already learning about in nursery so it makes me feel better knowing that I have chosen a better, cleaner way to heat our home. She says. Fast forward a few months and the Corona Virus hits Northern Ireland, and Angeline, with her sewing skills, finds herself at the centre of an initiative to mobilise the sewing community to make scrubs for hospital and care workers. Called NI Scrubs and NI Big Community Sew Angeline has not only

been sewing but using her contacts to gain sponsorship from the business community to buy fabric. With the help of her family she then delivered it to stitchers all around Northern Ireland, and then collected the scrubs to pass on to health care workers. She says. “Despite having a new born baby I couldn’t just sit still and watch while our health care workers were crying out for protective gear. I began sewing and calling on others who I knew could sew to lend a hand. Then of course the initiative grew in momentum and I was suddenly driving around delivering material and picking up scrubs that had been made. It was a busy time and I was very lucky to have a new baby who was very laid back and I could bring with me and other family support from my mum.” And those smart controls? “Yes they came in very handy indeed, especially when we were heading out for the day and never knew exactly when we would be back. 30 minutes from home we would turn on our heating remotely and would be welcomed to a nice warm home.” She says. “It certainly has been a busy year. I have a wonderful family and a home that is comfortable and reliable and having natural gas has definitely made a difference.” To date, over 100,000 customers have connected to natural gas with firmus energy and are enjoying the benefits that natural gas brings - from constant hot water, to more space in the garden, more efficient boilers to simply being a better choice for the environment. uring these difficult times, many of us have turned to techniques such as meditation and mindfulness to guide us through the uncertainty.

ƒ Siobhán Mullan

And now north coast author Siobhán Mullan has released a book of guided meditations entitled ‘Breathing Space’ to help us find clarity and peace in our busy and often stressful lives. Siobhán explains: “The idea for Breathing Space is that it is a simple read, a book to pick up with a cuppa and pause for a few moments, pondering and maybe scribbling or doodling - there’s space and prompts in book for doing just that.” This is Siobhán’s third book. Her first two are children’s stories and both were serialised on the Insight Timer meditation app over lockdown. Book one was ‘Bethany and the Unicorns Adventures in Unity Wood, which was released 2017, and the second book is ‘Beth and Martha’s Mid-summer Night Adventure,’ which was written and released as an audiobook recording on Insight Timer, during lockdown. Siobhán says: “I have used Insight Timer daily for over five years for meditation and in March this year I made the first steps to be an Insight Timer Teacher. Since then, I’ve had over 27,000 listeners. “I am delighted to have just released my third book, which is a collection of my guided meditations from Insight Timer

Your Small Spend will make a GIANT Difference this Christmas As we head towards a busy Christmas period, the public across Derry and Strabane are being encouraged to support local traders.

The ‘Your Small Spend Makes a Giant Difference’ campaign was launched in August and is supported by the Department for Communities. It focuses on shopping local and backing local retail and hospitality businesses especially, in the lead up to Christmas. Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, said it was more important than ever to help out local businesses. “This is a time of year when everyone is starting to plan Christmas presents for their children, family and friends. While it is always important to shop with our local traders and to support the growth of local businesses, it is particularly

LOOKING AFTER YOUR OLD AGE POOCH As we age, we tend to slow down, and our pooches are no different. As your dog moves into its senior years their needs will change and you will have to adapt to continue to be a responsible pet owner and care for your dog.

Dogs reach old age at different times depending on their size. For most breeds, their senior years start when they pass seven years old, but larger dogs do age faster. A little like us, genetics, environmental factors and activity levels will affect how fast your dog ages, as well as their diet and nutrition. It’s important to keep an eye on any changes in your pet as they age, as this will allow you to pick up any issues early and ensure the correct lifestyle changes can be made or the correct treatment received, so you can keep them as comfortable as possible in their golden years. Choose an age-appropriate diet - Older dogs are more likely to become obese so it’s important to ensure your dog’s diet is suitable for their stage in life. Your OAP won’t be fit for as much exercise and coupled with their energy levels they won’t need the same number of calories each day. It would be good to chat to your vet about physical issues or skin conditions your dog might have, and they can recommend what ingredients to look out for in their food and any supplements your dog might need. Choosing a high-quality food for your dog will ensure they are healthy from the inside out and adding a supplement or vitamin to their food, specific to their need, can help with joint, digestive, kidney, and liver issues which are common in older dogs. Pet & Country stocks a range of pet food brands to suit dogs at different stages of life, alongside supplements specific for senior dogs. Chat to the Pet & Country staff in store for recommendations to suit your dog best. Regular Vet Check-Ups – It is important to have your senior dog regularly checked by the vet. Prevention is much kinder on your dog and can help identify any health conditions early so they can be treated, and diseases prevented. Regular Exercise and Fun - Exercise is important for older dogs to ensure you keep their joints moving and maintain a healthy weight. It is possible as they age that dogs with mobility issues, such as arthritis, or maybe a heart problem, and these might limit the amount of activity they are doing. Ensure you only ever do what is comfortable for them. It’s important to keep them mentally stimulated too, so consider toys to keep them entertained and if 64 | Local Women Magazine

these toys double as an aid for dental hygiene – even better! Check out our range of toys in our store. Keep Those Teeth Clean – Keeping your dog’s teeth clean and breath fresh is important at all ages but becomes much more important during those senior years. If you struggle to keep your dog’s teeth clean at home, talk to your groomer or vet about a proper dental assessment and deep clean, which will make it easy for you to maintain their oral health in-between visits. As well as standard softbristled toothbrushes we have finger toothbrushes and dental gels and foams that require no brushing at all. We also stock chews that can help with dental hygiene, which the staff at Pet & Country will be happy to assist you with. Regular Grooming – Keeping regular grooming appointments is particularly useful for older dogs as changes in a dog’s health can be spotted during these appointments.

Things like a thinning coat, skin irritations or unusual lumps can be signs of underlying health issues. Regular grooming will keep your dog comfortable and keep them feeling good and walking tall. If you are brushing your Old Age Pooch at home remember that their skin will be less elastic so make the brush strokes slower and more gentle. Keeping nails well-trimmed is important as long nails are bad for a dog’s posture can lead to long term more serious problems with joints and back pain. Adapt your Home and Your Routine - As your dog gets older you may find they need more of your time. You and your family may have to adjust your daily routines to suit their needs. This may also mean adapting your home. Consider creating a quiet area for your dog away from the hustle and bustle of family life as senior dogs are sometimes less tolerant to noise and busy-ness. You may want to have their food and water in this area too. As dogs get older they may be more affectionate or you may find they are quicker to grumble, but be sensitive to any changes in temperament and remember that with everyone’s co-operation, your pet can live as happily and healthily as they have ever been!

At Ballymoney’s Linenhall Hair, Dorothy McCook and her team of experts will help you invest in your hair – after all, it’s the crown you never take off. 2. ZINC Zinc deficiency can cause hair to shred. Incorporate nuts like brazils, walnuts, pecans, cashews and almonds into your diet to combat shedding. Eat and drink an abundance of vegetables, fruit, leafy greens and water. Take a multivitamin and zinc supplement when necessary. The perfect hair colour will never exist without the perfect haircare routine. Here are some top tips for creating healthy, happy, shiny hair. While genetics play a key role, your diet, the weather, pollution and your overall approach to hair care are all vital in maintaining your crowning glory. 1. PUMP UP THE PROTEIN A well-rounded diet is an important factor in hair and scalp health. Hair is primarily made up of protein, so be sure to eat a substantial amount of proteinbased foods such as lean mince, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and low-fat dairy products. Diets with inadequate protein can result in weak, brittle hair, loss of hair colour as well as loss of hair itself.

5. CHOOSE THE CORRECT HOMECARE Before investing in a haircare range, always have a proper consultation with your stylist to ensure your hair is on the right path to becoming its best. Key points to note are hair type and texture, hair colour, condition and any scalp concerns. After starting your homecare journey always be sure to consult with your stylist and any tweaks to your routine will always be advised.

3. OMEGA Increasing your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids may stimulate your hair follicles and sebaceous glands. While this will not cause your hair to grow, it may improve scalp health. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in cold water fish such as salmon, sardines and herring. Other good sources include flax seed, yoghurt, cottage cheese and salad. 4. KNOW YOUR HAIR There are conflicting opinions about how often to shampoo your hair. It all comes down to personal preference and individual needs, which depends on your hair type and texture, how often you use products and your activity level. For example, people with oily hair may need to shampoo more often than

Composite Bonding FAQ’s What is Composite Bonding ? It is usually used for restoring chips, fractures or gaps between teeth, or for disguising discolouration. It can be used to change the size and shape of teeth and improve their position. A composite resin is attached to a tooth and shaped to a pre- planned appearance. The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth, so it will appear as though it is a natural part of your tooth. Does Cosmetic Bonding Ruin Teeth? Composite bonding in no way ruins teeth. It is an additive procedure . We do not remove any natural tooth structure but simply prepare the surface with a mild acid. After a few years, the material may fade or become chipped, but that does not affect the natural enamel of your teeth itself. How much does it cost ? From £200 per tooth . Dental bonding is more affordable than other cosmetic procedures, including veneers or dental crowns, with similar aesthetic results. While bonding is an excellent salution to enhance your smile, the composite resin material does not last as long as porcelain. We offer finance and flexible payment plans How long does it take to do ? After an initial consultation ,comprehensive examination of your dental/ oral health and a mock -up to demonstrate what can be achieved this can be carried out in one appointment . Our bonding appointments are typically 2 - 3 hours depending on the number of teeth . Will it change colour ? No it does not however If you want to whiten your teeth, do it before having

any cosmetic dental treatment. The dental bonding material is specially formulated, and color matched to resemble the natural teeth. Most people won’t realize you have a bonded tooth unless you decide to point it out The tooth-coloured resin blends in simultaneously with the rest of the smile. How long does it last ? This can vary . The restoration will typically last 3-5 years before it needs to be polished up or repaired in some way. Is it painful ? Composite bonding is a completely pain free procedure. It requires pre- polishing of the teeth and then gently adding on the resin material ( sometimes using a guide from the wax up / smile design model ) and then giving that a very high grade polish at the end.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND LIGHT

Even during these difficult times, Catriona Channing and her team at Blades & Beauty in Antrim remain positive and creative with new ideas and styles. Hello Local Women Readers,

Welcome to our November edition article

Hopefully by the time you read this, the four-week circuit breaker put in place in Northern Ireland will be over and we can look towards to moving forward to the future post Covid-19. HAVE YOU HERD ABOUT THE HR ELEPHANT?

Our mission is the three E’s- We want to Embrace, Educate and Enable every business on this island to effectively lead and guide their ‘herd’ to success. WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY Menopause is perhaps seen as one of those ‘taboo’ subjects. It is not generally talked about and it certainly isn’t very often addressed in the workplace. It is however something that the majority of women over 45 typically experience some symptoms of, in their lifetime.

A WORD FROM THE HEAD OF OUR HERD Here we are another month, another lockdown. It has been a strange old time and certainly not an easy one for businesses. We continue to be busy helping companies through the steady stream of updates, particularly in relation to the Job Support Scheme which comes into effect on 1st November. We will be covering this in more detail for our December column so keep an eye. I wouldn’t be surprised if there will be further updates in the weeks and months ahead. We also announced new members to the HERD in the last few months - Tracey, Martina, Shannon and Eimear, hopefully you will see more of them going forward. They have all settled in really well despite the move to home working. I hope it won’t be too long where we are all working together again.

Menopause happens once a woman has had no menstrual period for 12 months in a row. It is a natural part of ageing. The symptoms associated with menopause tend to be a result of hormone imbalance and lack of oestrogen. The British Menopause Society has listed more than 30 symptoms associated with menopause, ranging from mild or moderate to severe. These include hot flushes, weight gain, low mood and headaches. According to NHSemployers.org studies have shown that menopause symptoms can have a significant impact on attendance and performance in the workplace. This makes menopause not just a female issue but an organisational issue. In the UK there are 3.5 million people over 50 in the workplace and the average age for a woman to go through

the menopause is 51. Around 1 in 100 women however experience menopause before the age of 40. There are many ways to sensitively support women experience menopausal symptoms in the workplace. This can start with knowing the symptoms and how it can affect women at work. Many women see this as a very personal issue and may not disclose their symptoms at work. As part of World Menopause Day 2020 (which took place on 18th October) we would like you to stop and think about how this issue might impact the women in your organisation and what you can do to help. There are lots of organisations and agencies who can signpost you what to do. We, here at The HR Elephant can also help through training, creating a policy, reviewing workplace conditions and procedures or helping to put in place a menopause champion. The important thing is that we raise awareness of this issue and make sure that this very valuable 3.5 million people in our workforce do not feel like they are going through this on their own.

We are busy working away in the background on some updates in the business. We are very excited about our new business pack which will be available in the coming weeks. It will outline our client packages and services. One of the things we hear very often is that people are afraid to make an approach to a company like ours because they aren’t sure how much it will cost. Firstly I would say never worry because we are always very transparent about costs and clients know exactly where they stand with each piece of work; secondly we often try to signpost clients to funding streams where they can get support with their HR costs; and thirdly our new business pack will help outline the different ways in which you can work with us, with hopefully something for everyone.

Advanced CryoThermal Technology

BEFORE

Where can LipoContrast treat and how long does it take?

33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes. LipoContrast is indicated for local fat reduction (including fibrous fat) on different zones (waist, flanks, abdomen, love handles, lower back, upper back, hips, thighs, knees, gynecomasty, double chin and arms) through multisized applicators.

The Advantages of LipoContrast The effect produced is almost immediate. After treatment with the LipoContrast thermal shock, some fat cells are immediately disabled and will be eliminated within a few days. Other cells enter in severe apoptosis phase and will be progressively eliminated within a few weeks. Depending on the adipose tissue thickness and the desired result, 1 to 3 sessions can be treated on an area over 12 weeks, with an approximate interval of 4 weeks between each one – much shorter than cryo-lipo alternatives, giving quicker results. The duration of each session is 60 minutes. •

H

By Myra Dryden

ere I am at last! It has taken a whole three days for me to get this far. The first day I poked my head in the office door, thought better of it and skedaddled. Yesterday I made it to the desk but that was it. Today I have actually sat down and turned on the computer. It’s mostly a good sign when I reach this stage but there’s no guarantee of any action. I did manage the above, though. It’s better than nothing I suppose. Well I thought so. I am reminded, here, of my Shakespeare lecturer at Coleraine, back in the day. He highly recommended that all students after finishing their essays should throw away the first two pages. I simply could not do that because by the time I reached completion every word had blood on it. How I admired that professor! He was simply brilliant! I so wanted to be like him when I started teaching, but my delivery of Macbeth was always thwarted by the paper aeroplanes flying past my ears, and the photocopies balled up and bouncing off my head every time I turned to the board didn’t help either. On those awful occasions if someone had enquired whether I wanted to be or not to be, I would have had no problem choosing to shuffle off this mortal coil. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow couldn’t come quickly enough for me. Teenagers can be so cruel. If I may, I would now like to, courtesy of D. H. Lawrence, novelist, poet and teacher at the beginning of the 20th century, let you in on just how many teachers going through a hard time with a class can often feel:

LAST LESSON OF THE AFTERNOON When will the bell ring, and end this weariness? How long have they tugged the leash, and strained apart My pack of unruly hounds! I cannot start Them again on a quarry of knowledge they hate to hunt, I can haul them and urge them no more. No longer now can I endure the brunt Of the books that lie out on the desks; a full threescore Of several insults of blotted pages, and scrawl Of slovenly work that they have offered me. I am sick, and what on earth is the good of it all? What good to them or me, I cannot see! So, shall I take My last dear fuel of life to heap on my soul And kindle my will to a flame that will consume Their dross of indifference; and take the toll Of their insults in punishment? – I will not! – I will not waste my soul and my strength for this. What do I care for all that they do amiss! What is the point of this teaching of mine, and of this Learning of theirs? It all goes down the same abyss. What does it matter to me, if they can write A description of a dog, or if they can’t? What is the point? To us both it is all my aunt! And yet I’m supposed to care, with all my might. I do not, and will not; they won’t and they don’t and That’s all! I shall keep my strength for myself; they can keep theirs as well. Why should we beat our heads against the wall Of each other? I shall sit and wait for the bell.

Just get on with it!” And Frank perhaps feeling a morsel of sympathy for the poor man couldn’t resist bringing Hamlet in on it and quoted: “How all occasions inform against me”, to which the Shakespearian drop-out hastily replied: “Now, look here. There’s no need to inform anybody. I’ve got it.” That said, I sincerely hope that none of you, and I include Biden here, ever find yourselves in the that unenviable position of Hamlet where he feels that everything is going against him. Leave your worries behind and enjoy The Slieve Donard Local Women Editor Kim Kelly and columnist Lesley McGarrity enjoy a spa break at The Slieve Donard Resort & Spa in Newcastle where you leave your worries at the door. Treat a loved one to a staycation this Christmas for the ultimate gift of relaxation.

There’s no doubt about it - 2020 is the year of The Slieve Donard, I am reminded just how much we have right here on our doorstep. the staycation. Going abroad these days seems like a dim and distance memory but even in a post lockdown world with all sorts of restrictions in place, I’m definitely not ready to give up on girly weekends away.

If you have never had a nap in a Hastings Hotel bed, you’ve missed out!

Perched on the dramatic seafront with amazing views of the Mourne Mountains, The Slieve Donard has one of the most beautiful settings of any hotel.

A lot of work has been done over the past few I don’t want the stress of airports – a relaxing months and it is now very much a resort with spa break is just what I need and I can’t wait lots of new facilities. As with all Hastings Group hotels, you can’t fail to be impressed by the staff. They really can’t do enough to help and are always friendly and attentive. settling down for a luxurious ESPA treatment. The spa really is world class - and if you are worried about the safety aspect during the pandemic, they have thought of everything. All staff are wearing masks and visors. There are a limited number of people in each area to adhere to social distancing and the cleaning is rigorous. I am warmly greeted at the spa reception where I fill in a consultation form before my treatment. Today I am having a full body massage with my therapist George who is so welcoming and friendly. He asks me about any health issues and we choose an aromatherapy oil to suit my mood.

The waiting staff are so attentive, and it is just that little bit different in a world full of wine bars and bistros.

George is wearing full PPE – he must be so warm! He begins the treatment and I have to say it is one of the best massages I have ever had. He really puts me at my ease and the treatment is just amazing.

After dinner we head to the bar where we test out the cocktails – we make sure to give this a rigorous test – and we can confirm they are fantastic, particularly the espresso martinis!

It is honestly the most relaxing experience and he works out all the knots on my shoulders, leaving me feeling absolutely blissful.

It’s a 10.30 curfew so sadly we have to leave the bar and head back to our room. Once again the kind staff at The Slieve demonstrate their customer service excellence as the night porter comes to our rescue when we lock ourselves out of our room. He also brings me my bag that I abandoned in the bar – oh dear!

Afterwards I chill out in the relaxation room before heading into the private spa area for a quick dip in the hot tub. I am the only person in there and I have complete privacy to enjoy the beautiful sea views. At this point I must tell you that I had big plans for the afternoon. I was going to have lunch in the spa restaurant The Lighthouse Lounge and then go to the gym.

Lesley enjoyed the spa

Kim relaxing at the spa

Luckily our room is very spacious, so we have lots of room to enjoy the evening further. We chat and drink and laugh (quietly) – and have the perfect girly catch up.

Unlike most hotel gyms, The Slieve Donard has a fully equipped facility. It has everything however I can’t give you a review as instead I retreat back to my room.

Coronavirus seems a world away and it’s lovely to be looked after in the hotel, to feel safe and not to have to worry about the real world for a while.

If you have every stayed at a Hastings Hotel you will know about their beds. Quite simply it is like sleeping on a cloud - so I can’t resist climbing in for a nap – a two-hour nap!

Just before midnight we have a brainwave and order our breakfast to be delivered to the room the next morning.

When I wake up it’s time for Lesley to arrive. Poor Lesley had to work so she’s ready for a little spa time! Armed with some Prosecco we head to the spa where we splash about for a good hour. With an array of professional brands for everyone to use, this is the perfect time to reach out to one of the team, You can do this via social media, email anita@makeupprostore.co.uk for additional help choosing your perfect foundation.

ILLAMASQUA SKIN BASE £33.00 We adore this foundation, especially for someone with combination or oily skin as it sits so beautifully. It is a gel-based foundation which contains Vitamin E and A and allows your skin to actually look like real skin! The coverage is build-able, it is such a versatile product to have for any client and makes the skin look fresh and dewy. Skin Base Foundation comes in a great variety of shades, so you will definitely find something that works with your unique tone.

MAKE UP FOR EVER ULTRA HD LIQUID FOUNDATION £34.00 Foundation is such a personal preference as I believe there is no one size fits all foundation. This is one of the main reasons why Make Up Pro Stores does not stick to only one brand as so many brands and cosmetic houses create such beautiful formulas for so many different people and skin types. One of our all-time favourite foundations would be Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation £34.00. We totally adore the pigment of this foundation, as again it takes minimal product to build your preference of coverage and it appears natural on the skin. A full coverage foundation does not necessarily mean you need to be “caked” in make up, it simply needs to blend beautifully onto the skin and your product’s pigment and your brushes are the main aspects that will help you achieve this!

MAKE UP STUDIO FACE IT LIGHT CREAM FOUNDATION £27.50 If you want coverage, but do not have the time to invest in “buffing” etc then a quick application is definitely cream foundations as these build instantly on the skin and takes a minimal amount of product for a fabulous finish. This a cream-based foundation that builds coverage in seconds, simply apply using a stippling brush and apply in light circular motions for a flawless and fabulous finish.

Elle Designs has some amazing ideas to give your child a space they can call their own as they grow up. A child’s room is so much more than just a place to sleep – it’s a bedroom, playroom, study area and even somewhere to store clothes, books and toys. It’s a little boy or little girl’s chance to have their own space, which often feels magical to them, where they can play safely and happily, and also do their school homework. Designing your child's bedroom comes with its challenges. While you may want to forgo the neon walls, superhero or unicorn bedding, and stacks of toys, the occupant of the room might have other ideas. It could be tempting to succumb to the requests of your young one, but remember that their tastes are still evolving and Peppa could be frowned upon in a few months! There are plenty of chic ways to meet in the middle with ideas that are youthful and also refined. The ‘big ticket’ items should be future proofed to last into teenage years and beyond. When discussing schemes, we would evaluate how long you want to get out of the room before the child has outgrown it and how easily it could be changed to re-vamp it to make it age appropriate. We have a wide selection of fabrics and wallpapers for kids. We particularly love the

new Voyage Decoration collection as we feel it has captured the country market quite well that the previous collections missed out on. You've no idea how many times we have been asked for tractors and diggers and until now we couldn't accommodate. Playing it safe doesn’t mean it should be boring. We all know that children love places where their imaginations can run wild, and a room they are proud of that expresses their personalities. If wallpaper is your or your child’s preference, decide whether this will cover every wall or be a feature on one wall. I have found from experience that wallpaper is easier kept than paint in kids’ rooms. When my then three-yearold drew over her brother’s patterned wallpaper with several coloured markers, it wasn't really that noticeable, so much so I haven't changed it yet! If it was a painted wall it would have needed re-painted straight away. I also find Roman blinds are easier kept than curtains with kids as they are up out of the way. With the mechanisms complying to child safety legislation, there is no concern for safety. I have started the mammoth task of re-decorating the kids’ playroom, the space no longer works. If they didn't play with their toys during lockdown,

they aren’t going to start now. The children always filter into the living room as they say it’s nicer, so I am going with a more living room vibe for them with study space. Hopefully that means I get the kitchen table and the living room back. We hope to have it finished for Christmas, but we will be last on the list. Our books are now closed for pre-Christmas orders, so get in touch with your 2021 projects.

KELLY’S PATCH SAUVIGNON BLANC ‘ZIPPY, FULL BODIED WITH FRUIT AROMAS’

Kellyʼs Patch Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc (all four wines are 100% of their varietal) and is a well balanced medium bodied wine, full of tropical fruit aromas and flavours like passion fruit, pineapple as well as zippy gooseberry and there are slight herby hints like when you cut into a fresh green pepper. This is an easy drinking white, great on its own but would go well with fish, chicken or salads.

SEEING CLEARLY WITH CONTACT LENSES

Brian McKeown, our columnist from John Laverty Opticians tells us how we can combat ‘mask fog’ with contact lenses. Do you crave freedom from glasses for the whole day or for a certain activity? In recent times because of the increase in mask wearing, we’ve had more inquiries about contact lenses due to glasses fogging up – so, I thought I would answer some questions from your readers. Most of our customers are suited to wearing contact lenses, this is due to the fact that lens materials have advanced and there are lots of options to suit all prescriptions and requests. “That I’m home feeling” Great interior design should make you feel good simply by walking into a room. The most successful rooms have an understated elegance and an ambience that links the entire design to a desired lifestyle for its inhabitants. Design is a very emotive thing, its not just a bit of paint and fabric! and with the amount of time we’ve been spending at home this year the importance of having our own little sanctuary has never been more evident. When we started Houston Homewares I asked myself what is it that I really love about interiors? Yes I will spend hours binge watching multi million pound property tours and create entire Pinterest boards for bookmatched calacatta marble. But what I really love about interiors is the feeling of being at home, being comfortable and being relaxed. That’s why the tagline for Houston Homewares is “That I’m home feeling”. That feeling of relaxing when getting home after a long days work, or that sigh of relief walking through the door after traveling, or that warm and cozy feeling on a cold dark night.

Introducing our interior fragrance collection. Boyeeghter Bay: A fresh and uplifting fragrance that evokes the salty sea breeze of the Wild Atlantic Way. With notes of sea moss and ozonic minerals, get transported to the magical Boyeeghter Bay at any time.

Este de Eden: While having an impeccably designed house is all well and good its the ambiance that really makes it feel like home, the lighting, the comfort factor, the scent. We have an instinct to nest, to create a place where we feel safe and happy. And if it can look good and smell good at the same time then all the better. With the festive season approaching and a renewed focus on home and family this year we are happy to help create that ambiance with home decor tips and gifting ideas for your nearest and dearest in store or online. Make sure to follow our instagram and Facebook pages for some designer Christmas decorations tips and share your homes with us using the hashtag #thatimhomefeeling

A utopian blend of rich patchouli, Sandalwood, Amber and green moss with warm musk tones evoke a mystical eastern adventure.

Truffle Noir: A calming aromatic scent with Ylang Yang, Blackcurrant and Jasmine on a base of dark chocolate and truffle. A decadent fragrance for a relaxing evening in.

Oudh Superior: Luxurious Oudh and damask rose fuse to create an intense rich aroma. Experience the splendour of an Arabian night in this sensual and invigorating scent. Shop our exclusive interior fragrance collection in store or online at houstonhomewares.com the perfect ‘you to you’ treat or gift for someone special

As we celebrate three years of Houston Homewares this month we are excited to launch our first branded product range with Houston Homewares - Interior Fragrance. Four exhilarating scents in Luxurious soy wax candles, reed diffusers and room mist sprays. Each scent has been carefully curated and designed with the same ethos we started the company with! “That I’m home feeling”. Nothing evokes emotions quite like a scent, its something visceral, it can set the mood, its can change your mood and can be as important as any other decorative element in setting the ambiance of a room. A wonderfully scented home makes the ultimate first impression.

Rosie’s Touch

Welcome to Local Women’s new columnist Rosemarie McCay, owner of The Wellbeing Health and Beauty Spa in Sion Mills, who will be sharing her expert knowledge of make up and beauty to help you become the best version of you. Hi everyone, I'm Rosie and I run my own beauty spa in Sion Mills, Co Tyrone - The Wellbeing Health and Beauty Spa. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge as I have worked in the health and beauty industry for over 15 years. I am also a make up artist and have recently launched my own lash range. Check out my socials if you would like to see some make up demos and all things skin care. Instagram @rosiestouch_ makeup. Facebook @rosiestouch. This month, let’s strip things back and talk about skincare and in particular exfoliation. If you want a glowing, fresh complexion, it’s important to go back to basics and look after your skin properly. Your skin is a canvas for your make up – so if your skin looks great, your make up will look even better. It’s so important to prepare you skin, so this month I will look at exfoliation and pre make up skin prep. Let’s get prepped!

it helps your makeup stay on longer. Primers help decrease sweating through the pores, which makes your makeup stay in place longer. They also act as a natural shield for dust, water and debris that might make your makeup wear off. One of the main benefits of using a make up primer is that it seals your pores. But if you choose a liquid foundation, you already know that no matter how small your pores are, liquid foundation can make them more visible. Make up primer takes care of all that by sealing pores and creating almost a blanket over them.

Top three primers I love and use on myself and my clients. Two Faced Primed & Poreless (good for oily skin) Beauty Base by Aimee Connolly (normal to dry gives amazing glow) Mac Prep and Prime Natural Radiance

WHY EXFOLIATE?

ROSIE RECOMMENDS These are the staples in my life that I have been using for years and absolutely love Pre cleanse by Dermalogica super-fast oil cleanser melts the make up off my skin in minutes. Maybelline eye eraser concealer shade light. My go to concealer for everyday wear. My all time favourite fragrance Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche an invigorating floral sparkling fragrance. Zesty freshness soft jasmine and teak wood note. Rosie’s Lash - I'm also going to recommend my new lashes. They are faux mink luxury lashes and can be used multiple times. I'm wearing the Rosie Lash in the picture up above. If you want to shop your style check out my website rosiestouch.co.uk.

Proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. This opens the way for moisturising products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective a regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy. By exfoliating off dead skin, you create a smoother canvas on which the make up can adhere, making for a more even, flawless effect and longer wear. Going for a regular professional skin care treatment can help kick start the exfoliating. Trust me, if you're not doing this then get started, you will notice a huge difference in a matter of weeks. Especially if your skin is feeling tight and dry and dehydrated. And this also helps with ageing skin.

My top three exfoliators. Daily Microfoliant by Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermalfoliant Dermalogica Papaya Enzyme Peel by Elemis.

WHY PREP AND PRIME YOUR SKIN BEFORE MAKE UP? If you notice that your make up wears off or creases quickly, or seems to apply unevenly, the problem may not be your makeup (foundation) it may be your primer (or lack of it). The main reason for using a primer is because

WINTER MUST-HAVES Frangipani Monoi Hand and Nail Cream. - This smells amazing, and leaves the hands super soft! Personally, my hands are super, extra dry this year because of all the sanitising, this is drying out our hands so it's important to restore this moisture. Le Mara Hydrating Facial Mist: I picked this up at Aldi it’s so nice. You can mist this on the skin or spritz over your make up. Keeps the skin super hydrated.

NO SHAME, NO SECRECY! LET’S TALK ABOUT PELVIC HEALTH

Local Women’s new columnist Anne-Marie Campbell from Health Hub Professionals NI wants to break down the barriers and start a conversation about female pelvic health. PELVIC PHYSIOTHERAPY – WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO? Pelvic physiotherapy is the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions related to the pelvic floor. These include stress incontinence, bladder urgency or frequency, faecal leakage or urgency, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain and painful sex.

floor can become dysfunctional in two main ways. It is usually either weakened (which most women presume is the issue) or it can go into spasm and tighten (but this doesn’t mean it’s strong!) Weakness in the pelvic floor can often be associated with bladder and bowel leakage while tightness in the muscle is more associated with pelvic pain, painful sex and difficulty with bowel emptying. The only way to truly know how the muscle It is estimated that one in three women experience is functioning is to have an assessment carried out by a incontinence at some stage in their lives and up to 50% pelvic physio. Once you have determined the problem of women have pelvic organ prolapse on examination you can focus on the solution. BUT not a lot of women know that pelvic physiotherapy exists and that help is available. THE SOLUTION Clinical guidelines (from the National The pelvic floor is often neglected because we don’t see Institute of Clinical Excellence NICE) If you it, and the importance of its role isn’t appreciated until it stipulate that the first-line treatment injured any isn’t working properly. for women who are experiencing other part of your body you'd rehabilitate urinary incontinence should be it. Treat your pelvic floor supervised pelvic floor muscle the same. Continence training for at least three months. problems are not a This is where a lot of women get fact of life. frustrated as we live in a society where we want a quick fix and unfortunately that’s just not possible. If the muscle is weak Pelvic floor problems can significantly affect a woman’s then it will take time to build up the strength and if the quality of life, but the issues are never life threatening muscle is tight it takes time to learn to relax it. However, and can therefore be overlooked. both things are very possible (and extremely rewarding) LET’S START THE CONVERSATION! with the right guidance and encouragement. SEEK HELP Being proactive with your pelvic floor can seem unnecessary but a lot of women who experience SO, WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR AND HOW pelvic floor dysfunction only wish they’d sought DOES IT WORK? The pelvic floor is a muscle that runs from the pubic help earlier or had started doing their exercises bone at the front of the pelvis to the tailbone at the back. when they seemed unimportant. Whilst pregnancy It’s quite a strong band of tissue, but it is weakened by and childbirth can be big damaging factors to the the fact that there are two openings in it – the vagina muscles, our pelvic floors are under strain in everyday and the anus. The muscle has two main functions – life and are affected by factors such as coughing a it helps to maintain continence (both bladder and lot, constipation, heavy lifting and being on our feet bowel) and it supports the pelvic organs. The pelvic for long periods.

It’s time to break down the barriers and start the conversation around female pelvic health. We have become very breast aware but when it comes to ‘down there’ we don’t look at it, touch it or talk about it. Women often shrug off problems and accept them as being part and parcel of having had babies or being of a certain age. There should be no shame or secrecy associated with pelvic floor problems. So, come on ladies; speak up, reach out, seek help.

Women’s Health WITH DR MARK MCCOMISKEY

Dr Mark McComiskey MD MRCOG is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon. Dr Mark McComiskey is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon who trained at the world-famous Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America Dr McComiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life. Each month Dr McComiskey provides Local Women readers with healthcare advice, dispelling some of the many myths surrounding women’s health.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT POSTMENOPAUSAL BLEEDING Each month Dr Mark McComiskey MD MRCOG discusses gynaecological conditions and women’s health issues.

Dr Mark McComiskey is a specialist gynaecologist and gynaecological surgeon who trained at the world-famous Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. His work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals in obstetrics and gynaecology and his work has been presented at international meetings throughout Europe and North America

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT YOUR GP APPOINTMENT?

Dr Comiskey takes a holistic and caring approach to managing all general gynaecology conditions with the aim of maximising women’s quality of life.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

WHAT IS POSTMENOPAUSAL BLEEDING? Menopause is usually diagnosed in women over 45 years old who have not had a period for more than a year. Any bleeding from the vagina after this time needs to be reported to a family doctor.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF POSTMENOPAUSAL BLEEDING? Thinning of the tissues of the vagina (atrophic vaginitis) or the womb lining (endometrial atrophy) – caused by lower oestrogen levels. Polyps of the cervix or the womb lining – these are usually non-cancerous. Thickened womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia) – caused by higher levels of oestrogen. Postmenopausal bleeding is occasionally caused by cancer of the womb, cervix or ovary.

KINGSBRIDGE PRIVATE HOSPITAL Tel: 028 9066 7878 www.kingsbridgeprivatehospital.com

The GP will likely ask you some questions about your symptoms and may examine you. A referral to hospital postmenopausal bleeding clinic will likely be recommended. You should not have to wait more than two weeks to see a specialist. At the hospital appointment, you will meet a specialist who will discuss your symptoms with you. You will be offered an examination of your pelvis in order to detect any abnormalities, this is generally similar to a cervical smear test. It lasts only a very short time and should not be painful. An ultrasound scan is almost always recommended and this can be performed in the clinic. The purpose of this is to assess if your womb lining and the rest of your pelvis appear normal. The best view of your womb is usually picked up using an internal ultrasound probe and you will likely be offered this. The scan is not painful and also does not take long to complete.

WHAT IS A WOMB BIOPSY? Depending on the results of the scan and examination, you may be offered a biopsy of your womb lining. This is an important test in those women deemed suitable for it by the specialist – the purpose is to look

for polyps, abnormal cells or even cancer cells. The biopsy can often be achieved in clinic (without anaesthetic) which causes cramping for a short time during and after the procedure. Some women may need to return to hospital on another day as they require a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic in order to complete the biopsy – your doctor will be able to explain this to you. The results of the biopsy will likely be available within a few weeks and you will be informed of the results and what they mean for you.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR POSTMENOPAUSAL BLEEDING? Many cases of bleeding after the menopause require no action or treatment. Medical treatment may take the form of pessaries or cream to be applied vaginally. Sometimes other hormones, such as a mirena coil, may be recommended. Surgical treatment may involve a minor treatment – possibly with day case surgery or occasionally major surgery is required, such as hysterectomy. Any treatment recommended will be explained to you by your healthcare team. For further information contact Dr McComiskey at info@drmarkmccomiskey.com.

It might not be December but there’s no time like the present (pardon the pun) to start thinking about your Christmas gift list. Are you one of those people that say you’re going to get organised this year but still run around on Christmas Eve grabbing anything you can get your hands on? Yeah, we all do it! with Anna Nelis

H

i sisters! Anna here and welcome or welcome back to Life in Lockdown as a ten-year-old!

After months of having long, stressful, annoying hair, I finally got my hair all cut short. I’m so happy now. It takes about ten minutes to wash and dry. Thank you to Michelle and Nathan at Connor & Co.

So, if you read the September edition, you will know that I’m back to school. Work is starting to get really hard now. I moved to my own table because I couldn’t counseentret (concentrate). Haha It sounds right to me! It used it take me 25 minutes to do my work, but now it only takes me 10 or 15 minutes depending if it is hard or easy. We were out of lockdown for a few weeks, but on the 22.09.2020 at 18.00pm we had to go back into dumb lockdown. I though this craic was over, but I guess I was wrong. I’m sick and tired of lockdown now. We are back to step 1, with my two annoying little bros Lorcan and Faolán, and my crazy parents. AND WE ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE STEEET! I don’t like lockdown but at the same time I do. The reason I don’t like it 1. Boring 2. Annoying. And the reason I do, I can lie in bed all day on Face Time and playing Adopt Me. (This sentence was not parent approved)

A big Happy Birthday to my 38-year-old Daddy! His Birthday is on Halloween, so that means DOUBLE sweets and cake! My Dad is really funny and caring. He tells us funny Dad jokes and loves to scare us. We love him so much. Happy Birthday, Daddy! xxx

This month we are celebrating Halloween and so, while we’ve been off school, we have been doing some crafts. This is a really cheap craft, and it was lots of fun to make. We bought a polystyrene ring for £1 and then me and Lorcan collected leaves and acorns from the front of our house. We put them all out on paper to dry and then stuck them to the wreath. Step 1 Glue the ribbon onto the ring at the front and back Step 2 Stick the leaves to the back of the wreath Step 3 Glue more leaves around the edge and then onto the front of the wreath so it looks like a lion’s mane Step 4 Decorate with whatever you wish. We used rainbow leaves, acorns, conkers, and skulls. Step 5 Hang it wherever you want and pose for a picture

This month, we celebrated my little brother, Faolán’s 4th birthday. He may be the youngest, but he is the boss of the house. I love him so much. He is funny and loving. Breithlá Sona Duit! xxx 156 | Local Women Magazine

This is such a fun craft and doesn’t just have to be for Halloween. You could stick feathers and fabric to it and make a pretty one for your room or go for a hunt for holly and berries and make a Christmas wreath.

Sis V Bro Cupcake Challenge

W

e decided to do another Sis vs Bro Challenge – Cupcake Edition. The challenge was to see who could make the best cupcakes with our own choice of fillings and toppings. We chose 3 things each in the shop and used the Hummingbird Chocolate Cupcake recipe, (you can find this online). Well, we were SUPPOSED to follow the instructions, but my mummy forgot to add in the Caster sugar =

EPIC FAIL haha

So, on the remake, we didn’t have as many ingredients left, but we still had enough to do the challenge. And obviously, Faolán chose Lorcan again. I will definitely beat Lorcan the next time!

The Ingredients of Doom: •

Aero Peppermint Bubbles- explodes

Popping Candy- didn’t pop

Galaxy Dark- sunk to the bottom

Orange Smarties- went white and sunk to the bottom

Basically, just use all of the extra ingredients as toppings haha

O R L A’ S E D I T I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H L E J A R D I N S PA As the Halloween bonfire embers cool and the autumnal leaves begin to fall, there’s a necessity to add some much-needed spice to our lives to gear up ahead of a most unusual Winter.

We should use the autumn to heat up and energise for the chilly times ahead, preparing our bodies to become resilient to what may come both on the physical and emotional front.

There can be no denying that for many our mood is subdued, and energy is lagging of late, as many remain apprehensive as to the future of their working position, current Covid 19 situation, and what the end of 2020 will indeed bring with it.

At the Spa, we are currently enjoying experimenting with a multitude of seasonal Winter warming spices, as we create fabulous mulled spice scented scrubs and wraps for our Christmas and festive spa treatment packages. If you book online one of Le Jardin’s Light and bright Christmas Day Spa offers, you too can experience the uplifting aromatic spices such as star anise and dried clementine offer. Delivered in the form of freshly created in spa spiced poultices packed with cinnamon and ginger, gently heated and massaged onto the body to melt tense muscles.

Working in the spa and wellbeing industry, we greet and indeed treat individuals on both a high and low ebb. Visitors to Le Jardin range from those celebrating an occasion and sharing a glass of Prosecco, to those who need to make time to recharge and renew and perhaps require a soul nurturing herbal tea post-treatment. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you’ll know that we use the full moon at Halloween to energetically charge up our massage stones preparing them to harness natures energy for the heated massages that await our guests. Also, in our recent laughter blog, we honed in on the need for laughter as an elevated mood is clinically proven to benefit our natural immunity.

As Le Jardin’s therapists continue to support our valued guests with their immunity and health goals this Autumn, we ask that you consider the benefits of Vit C (as mentioned in the article below) to uplift both the skin and the mood. We are delighted to offer local women readers 15% discount off any Forbes award winning Natura Bisse Vit C product range.

In the beauty world, Vit C is responsible for helping the body with the formation of collagen muscle and cartilage and fighting off the free radicals which cause oxidative stress in the body and thus age the skin prematurely. However, internally Vit C is an amazing catalyst driving our immune system into action, acting to not only ward off infections but to energise the body simultaneously.

VITAMIN C - ME Whilst you might be encouraged to supplement this vital vitamin into your diet, it has been proven that synthetic forms of Vit C simply don’t last as long within our systems like those from natural food sources (or supplements which are derived from such). Natural sources of Vit C ultimately being more bioavailable in both the blood and the liver, and easily assimilated. Thankfully, many dietary staples contain high levels of Vit C, and our knowledge of its actions are historically noted and furthermore with the popularity of veg and fruit juicing we can easily gain high levels from our food. Traditionally, Nettle soup and Kale broths would have been given to treat colds and flu. Healers and herbalists would reach for Elderberry and Yarrow as tonics to fight off fever associated with colds and flu’s again now known for their high Vit C and Vit A content. Rowan berries akin to Rose-hip in their Vit C levels would have been taken to fight off scurvy. Mint tied to the wrists was said to fight off infection and disease. Essential oils of lemon, orange and lime are all known for having antibacterial effects and can be used in a sick room to help purify the air and lift the spirits.

Internationally renowned Natura Bisse C+C products are available at Le Jardin

Herbal teas of dried lemon peel and fruit berry teas all contain Vit C and being that viruses dislike intense heat are great to sip on as a preventative. An unseen form of viral reinfection which can often be the overlooked is your toothbrush, however, squeezing lemon juice on this then rinsing can help kill off nasty bugs. The daily recommendation of Vit C is approx 80mg per adult however when colds and cases of flu are imminent its best to up this to no more than 500mg every 2 hrs. Vit C in large doses can irritate the bowels and stomach and should be used in caution by those who are pregnant or on blood thinners. Please seek your GP’s approval if you are currently on medication or undergoing medical care before embarking on a high supplementation programme. TAKE CARE OF YOUR TEETH AND GUMS With lockdowns and quarantine, our oral health is something on all our minds at present. Michele King from Portstewart Family Dental gives you some top tips on preventive dentistry.

WHAT IS PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY? Preventive dentistry is the modern way of helping you keep a healthy mouth. It helps you to keep your teeth, and means you need to have less dental treatment. The two main causes of tooth loss are DECAY and GUM DISEASE. The better you prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you will have of keeping your teeth for life.
