If you’ve been around as we have, you’ve seen simple 2-axis CNC Lathes evolve into multi-axis combination CNC Turning & Milling Centers, capable of doing much more than turning. While the 2-Axis CNC Lathe remains a staple for any shop doing OD or ID Turning, today’s multi-tasking machines are a must for any facility that manufactures complex components where multiple turning and machining operations require completion in one cycle.
In the past, a turned part that needed secondary operations such as cross drilling, slotting, or end-working would have to put on multiple machines to Multi-Tasking CNC Turning & complete those operations. The advent of a turret with live tooling capability Milling Center (and a C-axis spindle) was the first step in eliminating these time-consuming second operations. Further improvements such as an opposing sub-spindle allowed for end-working. Later innovations such as Y-axis turret movement, plus a swiveling milling spindle with A/B axis coupled with an automatic tool changer allowed for yet more complex single-cycle operations, more significant reductions in production lead times and part costs, and further blurred the lines between Turning Centers and Machining Centers.

Some of the industries served for these intricate components include Aerospace, Defense, Fluid/ Power Generation, and Medical, for example. Major manufacturers like Mazak, Okuma, DMGMori, and Doosan, and Millturn compete heavily in the multi-tasking CNC Turning & Milling Center market, but almost every OEM that builds CNC Lathes can offer one of these versatile machines.
