What a difference a year can make, and 2023 has been quite momentous for Lochcarron. After moving our Strome Premium™ weight kilt cloth to British wool, we have achieved our end goal of making it exclusively from Scottish wool sourced locally with regional traceability to the Scottish Borders and the south of Scotland.

This project has been a key part of our move to more responsible and sustainable practices and we were delighted to be one of the first companies to participate in the Scottish initiative, Net Zero Accelerator Program allowing us to measure our carbon footprint and make informed decisions on how best to implement continuous improvement across all areas of the business.

Our major investment in the spring of 2023 was in the eight new looms we commissioned that are already improving workflow and increasing capacities and have the added bonus of reduced energy consumption.

In April, we were guests at the V&A Museum Dundee for the opening of their exhibition TARTAN, a radical new look at one of the world’s best-known textiles featuring many of Lochcarron’s tartans. This was the first major tartan exhibition to run in Scotland since the late 1980s.

Our store in the village of Lochcarron relocated after more than six decades. The Weavers Heritage Shop reopened in May to the east of the village on Route North Coast 500 and has been kept busy welcoming visitors from far and wide.

June brought the distinguished visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to our Selkirk mill. It was a huge honour to welcome Their Majesties, where they met staff and witnessed the weaving of the new King Charles III tartan. Designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority and woven by Lochcarron in 100% Scottish Wool. His Majesty wore the tartan for the first time in September at the Braemar Gathering.

Beyond kilts and the catwalk, we have also been promoting our fabrics and blankets in interior markets, exhibiting at new trade shows and creating new products, some of which, are highlighted within this brochure. Tartan is not only for kilts or the catwalk but is equally at home in the home!

A Fly Plaid is usually worn over the left shoulder and harks back to the days when ‘kilts’ were less structured, more akin to a length of cloth where part of this was thrown over the shoulder. The modern Fly Plaid gives a spectacular lift to your look.

The Mini Fly Plaid is a smaller more compact accessory due to the pleating. It is a little more low key than the classic Fly Plaid yet still giving a colourful lift to your outfit with an authentic nod to historical dress.

Considered by many to be the premium kilt fabric, it is available in a collection of over 500 stock supported tartans we aim to ensure all are in stock or in the process of being made to replenish stocks

Our lightweight fabric is available in a collection of around 500 authentic tartans, estate style checks and solid colours. These are generally available from stock or if not currently in stock they are likely to be in the process of being made to replenish stocks.

With a nice drape and handle the Reiver™ fabric has a wide application of uses. It has been used successfully in many clothing types from jackets to ties, skirts to dresses, head wear and even shoes. In traditional Scottish wear it is successful in sashes, cummerbunds, capes and as a lightweight kilt cloth.

Additionally it works well in interiors as cushions, curtains and light use upholstery.

Tartan Design Service

As the world’s leading manufacturer of tartan, we are all passionate about the tartan we design and make here in Scotland. Tartan is the thread woven through our history and is the story of our future.

With our rich textile heritage and contemporary design capabilities it is very fitting that we offer a bespoke service for tartan design. Inspired by your tartan brief, our in-house design team will create tartan patterns as prints generated through our CAD system. These designs can then be sent to you electronically or in print format for approval. Hopefully a more interesting option for you would be visit the mill and work directly with our skilled design team and use this as an opportunity to see just how we dye, warp, weave and prepare our fabrics and accessories ready for our customers.

We can also guide you through the process of registering your tartan with The Scottish Register of Tartan ensuring its place in tartan history.

As well as creating your own tartan, you can have your design converted into a wide choice of fabrics and accessories made here at our mill in Scotland.
