Together with Lockside, Beechwood has successfully developed a unique multi language publishing system that manages text, images, languages and editions. Using GlobalEdit and its extensive features, the software allows Beechwood’s customers to edit content over the web. It also allows selection of content enabling region specific editions in their own language containing their own content selected by a single click. Side by side editing allows translators to check content against the base language and to make live corrections. The editing is done via a standard browser which handles language area specific character sets and automatically translates the characters for use in the target page make up software. The level of productivity is exceptionally high as is the control. The users have an editing period during which they make all changes. When editing is complete PDFs are generated allowing the editors to check the finished, “ready for print” artwork. www.beechwood.uk.com

a complex and detailed task. For Cumbria and two other publications, Mullin have not only implemented the software but have succeeded in producing four, large publications each of which met their deadline and high standards of quality. Said Keith Robinson, production manager, “the autoplace function for automating

the production of proof pages was a godsend”, “it saved us a number of days”. While many companies like a gradual implementation path for new systems, the highly competitive sharp end of trade production does not allow such luxury. Implementation needs to be fast and accurate and everything needs to work first time. Fortunately this was the case with Mullin Design, even though much of the data had to stripped out of existing publications before the system could be populated with data for the new publications. Despite the learning process associated with a new system the job was done faster and more effectively and will obviously bring substantial dividends in the coming year. The training and data transfer behind them Mullin can look forward to serious productivity gains in 2004.

Introducing

A web based collaborative editing tool linked to Quark XPress & the web for multi language content management

Quickly Storing content in itself is not difficult. It is the collaboration, workflow, language and formatting that are challenging. A simple fact - a bullet on the web, in MS Word, on a Macintosh and in Quark XPress have nothing in common other than what you see (often a far cry from what you get). The same is true of many other regularly used characters so managing content for use in multiple destinations needs tools that handle the idiosyncrasies of styles in different media and languages. Furthermore, content often refers to text that is wrapped in

HTML when sent to the web. In most content management systems the content is managed only for its use on a web site not its vital use in the organisation as central repository for repurposing. GlobalEdit not only manages the core content but manages associated products and their attributes in their base language and destination language with tools such as side by side language views. Everything that is held can be output to paper via Quark XPress and the Internet fully styled, from training manuals to university

ABB Pilot takes off

Cost-Effectively

“It just looks fantastic. We were wondering how you would manage the sideby-side comparison windows and you pulled it off.”

Because of the high cost of print and distribution the cost of production is usually overlooked yet the savings can be substantial. Centralised production with local access and side by side translation cuts time to market, production costs and improves accuracy.

GlobalEdit in action

Accurately

In April 2003 Lockside’s GlobalEdit was selected by ABB after extensive worldwide research and comparisons of catalogue production solutions. The quest was to find a software solution that would link to their chosen content management system and produce their catalogues. The tasks was as tough as any that Lockside had undertaken due to the very large number and variety of publications produced by the group. It did not stop there - catalogues ranging from a hundred to over 1000 pages have regional and language variations. Lockside’s remit was to produce a catalogue from beginning to end, in three languages. The data was to come partly from the content management system and partly from locally held content which consisted of images, marketing descriptions and logos. ABB, one of the largest electrical and mechanical engineering manufacturers in the world pride themselves on the detail and quality of their catalogues which are often considered by the trade to be a

unique source of reference. The content is challenging in the extreme due to the quantity and complexity of tables and graphs. Using GlobalEdit’s XML interface the data was received from the content management system. The local images and content were added to GlobalEdit’s own repository and the pages produced in Quark XPress. Not only were pages produced locally but remote offices had to be able to access the system and generate their own pages via a standard browser with up to date data. The project was completed on schedule, as specified.

ABB has big catalogues, complex tables, multiple versions and languages. Content variations across markets and a high degree of collaboration.

A first class meeting place for the industry, in fact the only specific catalogue and home shopping event in the calendar. With 55 individual seminars and workshops there is something for everything and an impressive array of professionals lined up to share their knowledge. It’s easy to be blasé about exhibitions but in a world where networking is so important, it is an unmissable event. Lockside will be rolling out its image asset management module and its web editing module. Both modules stem from customer demand and would be fine applications on their own but when integrated with Catalog’nTime or GlobalEdit make an extremely powerful adjunct to an already

capable solution. The asset manager is a sophisticated tool that allows different versions of images such as web ready JPEGs, high resolution TIFFS and low resolution “for placement only” images to be tracked as a single asset. They are, after all, the same original shot. It allows images to be viewed and searched using a standard browser. Images can be downloaded according to the viewer’s rights and permissions. The web editing module is a powerful tool that enables HTML pages to be presented as text only for editing purposes, again in a standard browser. When edited, a touch of a button updates the site.
