We have asked Bodil Persson to interview four highly respected Nordic dance personalities with different backgrounds. Four individuals that we believe can contribute with interesting thoughts about Nordic contemporary dance in relation to Europe and to the world.

ADOLPHE BINDER has been the artistic director of the GÜteborgsOperans DANSKOMPANI since 2011. Her previous roles have included Head of Dramaturgy of the Deutsche Oper ballet company in Berlin, curator and programmer for international dance festivals, and running her own production and consultancy company Binder + Partners Berlin, which has been active in the international contemporary dance arena. When describing the Nordic countries, Binder specifically mentions their global, international perspective. – What makes art and dance important and alive is their ability to respond and generate a sounding board for the 6


Adolphe Binder believes that this diversity is the strength in the dance she sees being produced here in the Nordic countries, a diversity reflected in the dancers’ varying training and cultural and linguistic backgrounds. All these factors collide and combine as part of the creative process. – We aren’t just influenced by the sociocultural aspect though, but by the landscape and our natural environment as well. Guest choreographers who come to the Nordic countries for creative projects are deeply affected by the marked change in seasons and that renowned ‘Nordic light’. Binder sees artists as vessels – vessels in which the artists’ entire surroundings collect and subsequently take shape. She believes that artistic creation here in the Nordic countries is clearly influenced by the fact that we live in one of the richest parts of the world. This allows us to dare to do things with art that others cannot. That is the precise idea behind subsidised, tax-financed arts programmes, says Adolphe Binder.

reality in which they are created. I live and work in Gothenburg, a city of 180 nationalities. Nowadays,approximately 20 % of Swedish people were born outside Sweden. I am the head of a dance company that has members from 17 different countries. We see ourselves as a ‘global village’.

– Our high level of welfare means that we can take risks in our creative endeavours and not just produce ‘mainstream’ art, fulfil common expectations and maintain traditions. We can invent, and explore the unknown. The fact that we live in extreme wealth and welfare here in the Nordic countries also means that new and developing technologies form a natural part of the dance creation process – high tech in fascinating collisions with the lyricism of the natural surroundings. Diversity and cross-fertilisation/hybridity – two terms that Adolphe Binder wants to emphasise, which she believes show what potential lies in the future of artistic creation. – Whatever influences we are exposed to, we humans will undoubtedly keep undergoing change. We don’t stop developing.

BUSH HARTSHORN has served as the Artistic Director of the Copenhagen Dansescenen (now Dansehallerne) since April 2011. Born and raised in Great Britain, his previous roles have included truck driver, performance artist, festival organiser and consultant.

After just two and a half years in Denmark, Hartshorn remains somewhat of an outsider. His view of the Nordic dance scene is both that of a ‘foreigner’ and of someone more ‘local’. He points out that, before becoming head of Dansescenen, he had very little knowledge of or contact with Nordic contemporary dance. His experience was limited to a small number of visits to dance platforms in a couple of countries. They did not inspire him. Luckily, Hartshorn’s first year as head of Dansescenen coincided with the establishment of the Nordic platform ICE HOT, of which Dansescenen is a collaborating partner. This collaboration has opened the door to the Nordic dance scene for him, and now he feels a great deal of confidence in how they work. When asked to characterise the ‘Nordic’, his response is emblematic:

– It has only taken me one winter here to discover for myself the importance of light in our lives. So much of it in summer and so little in winter, and I live in Copenhagen, the Latin south of the Nordic countries. So this dominance of light I see coming through in much of the work. There is very little Nordic work I see that does not have light design at the very heart of the work – it is not only there to support the dance but often has a central role in the performance. The clearest example for me has to be the piece Grind by Jefta van Dinther with fantastic design work by the Finnish light designer Minna Tiikkainen. In the Nordic countries, the arts and artists are heavily subsidised with tax money in comparison to many other parts of Europe. This greatly impacts artists’ situations and is generally very positive, says Bush Hartshorn, but not always harmless. He believes there is a risk that artists might start judging the worth of their own work on the basis of how much funding they get. In his experience, artists in Denmark who do not get granted funding do not realise their projects – they give up. That, says Hartshorn, is a risky, problematic step for an artist to take. And then the so talked about Nordic nature… Bush Hartshorn believes that the lack of big cities has an impact. The Nordic countries are sparsely populated and the natural surroundings are so tangible in people’s daily lives, and that is reflected in the art they create.

has been the CEO and Artistic Director of the Bergen-based Carte Blanche, Norway’s key national contemporary dance company, for nearly six years. He will be moving on to a position as curator of the Hessisches Staatsballett Wiesbaden Darmstadt next summer. Heynderickx has focused on increasing Carte Blanche’s reputation outside Norway and bringing the company to a wider audience. Following an international career as a dancer for some of Europe’s renowned dance companies, Heynderickx has had many years of experience as a dance producer and agent, working on European co-productions and international cooperations alike. In his view, developments in the internet and other technologies are shaping the direction in which Nordic dance is heading.

– The Internet influences our daily lives more than we currently realise. Most of us use smartphones, and we can follow what is happening on the other side of the globe the very second it takes place. Nowadays, almost unlimited information available to us on the internet become references we can share with people around the world. However the context in which we live – cultural and economic – means that we interpret that flow of information differently. He believes that there is a young generation of artists and choreographers from whom living in this internetinfused age is a matter of course. The art they create is in constant dialogue with that world, they are inspired by it but also influencing it. – From an artistic point of view, we are seeing a young generation of choreographers emerging who are challenging both the process and the choreographed work. They are in search of new production situations and new platforms to interact with their audiences. Bruno Heynderickx believes that institutions have to be open to present-day society, highlighting the Cullberg Ballet and its former Artistic Director Anna Grip as an example. – They started a process of reinventing themselves and were daring enough to follow it through. Allowing scope for the truly contemporary, and patiently working to find an audience that dares to be challenged – that’s a brave move. As he sees it, the Cullberg Ballet is now in a position to reap the fruits of its efforts. very positive - the long-term nature of the funding enables choreographers to improve their production planning, which allows more cooperation with institutions that schedule far in advance. -It remains to be seen how the new government in Norway will act in relation to funding and culture policy. He raises the question if different ways of distributing the funding among choreographers would not provide better results artistically. Would it not be better to invest in a smaller number of artists who then receive larger amounts of funding, enabling them to fully explore their artistic projects, have longer term perspectives? What we currently see is that awarding small amounts of production funding to lots of players leads to large number of production (positive) of which statistics here in Norway show they are merely shown three to four times on average (negative). – Contemporary dance in Norway has considerable growth potential as an art form. Carte Blanche is celebrating its 25-year anniversary and will be performing on the main stage of the Oslo opera house for the very first time. I view that as recognition that contemporary dance also has its place on the major stages in the country.

PIRJETTA MULARI has a background as a teacher and choreographer, and for the past 15 years has been prominent as a producer and festival organiser. She has worked as International Affairs Manager at Dance Info Finland since 2005. For a long time now, Mulari has followed and been involved in Nordic dance cooperations, for both international and inter-Nordic projects. This makes her the perfect person to ask what characterises Nordic dance now in comparison to 10-15 years ago. – Through different Nordic initiatives and funding schemes there are many more Nordic artistic collaborations taking place than for instance 10 years ago. Nordic dance professionals have definitely found more possibilities to collaborate artistically across borders. Nowadays Nordic artists study and work so much in Europe that the differences to the rest of Europe have decreased. The trends and development have followed the European 10


Pirjetta Mulari believes that there are choreographers out there whose work retains what could be termed their original ’roots’, even when they live abroad for many years. As many others have suggested, she also thinks that the relationship with the natural environment and, not least, with space and time are factors that Nordic artists are often seen to have in common. However, Mulari also sees differences between the Nordic countries. She has noticed that less international choreographers and artists seem to work in Finland than in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and she also points out how geographical factors influence the art created in the various countries. Finland and Iceland are more geographically isolated and thus perhaps less influenced by the outside world. When it comes to audience numbers, Pirjetta Mulari believes the Nordic countries are unique.

path: there is much more conceptual and text-based work than before: also, the artists work within multiple genres, not remaining only within movement and dance.

– I think that the audience numbers in Nordic countries for art in general are exceptional: people are used to going to the theatre from a very young age. This is also thanks to our national cultural strategies in the Nordic countries that stress that everyone should have equal access to enjoy cultural activities. Mulari takes a positive view of the future of Nordic dance, particularly in relation to intra-Nordic cooperations. – In my work I often find that the further away from home we get, the more important the cooperation between the Nordic countries seems to become. Seen from other continents, the Nordic region appears to be a united entity and that is our strength: to be able to put our minds and resources together, and work towards common goals. What our artists really need is time to research and develop, not only produce. When they are granted that time we will see dozens of Nordic artists making original work that will speak to the rest of the world.

Black Box Dance Company is part of the Black Box Theatre that was founded in 2010. In 2013 and 2014 we are touring with the performance Viva, Vive!, featuring young talented dancers from Europe and Brazil. Viva, Vive! consists of three emotional ballets. The first piece is called IMPROMPTU by Tindaro Silvano. The second piece is called BEING ME - BEING YOU and is a two-part choreography by Marie Brolin-Tani and Melody Putu. The last piece is called RITES by Alessandro S. Perreira.

Fors Works is the project formed around the choreographic work of Martin Forsberg. The work spans from small-scale installations to big theatrical productions. The core of Forsberg’s work focuses on questioning topics, turned into choreography. Often with one foot in reality, the work tries to question dance as an art form, through dance. Whether it is investigating the relationship between dance and surgery (STITCH), the meeting between the Russian totalitarian body and contemporary male body (Rabota) or searching for the sensational pathos of gay cruising (In the Pretty Boy’s Mouth), the dance is always present and challenged. In 2014-2015, Fors Works will be exploring the notion of bad taste through the female tour de force Comic Sans and touring Europe with In the Pretty Boy’s Mouth. 18

Gazart creates critically acclaimed dance performances for an audience ranging from toddlers to teenagers and adults. The repertoire is charged with a sense of carefree playfulness, poetic sensitivity and raw energy. In SnowEyes (0-4 years), we imagine ourselves waking up one morning to a landscape covered in a white blanket of snow. The world is new, fresh and pure. Everything appears different, and the ambience is one of secret poetry. The poetic and playful DROPS (0-4 years) presents its audience to constantly changing and often strangely wonderful water, interpreted by two dancers and a musician.

GLiMT

GLiMT creates interdisciplinary stage art using contemporary circus, contemporary dance and physical theatre. We choose themes that raise important questions about our society, and express these through physical skills and an imaginative use of set design. GLiMT was founded in 2002 by Lars Gregersen and Camila Sarrazin, and has since then created thirteen performances of both small and big scale. Ongoing research in the performing arts. Danish choreographer Palle Granhøj has won international recognition for his unique stage language. Based on the Obstruction Technique, he reshapes the movements of the performers by means of hindering actions, revealing inner layers of their personality in the process, thus turning the spotlight on the human condition. Rather than showing choreographies, he wants to present human beings on stage, as complex as they can be. Throughout the years, Palle Granhøj, together with visual designer Per Victor and his collaborating performers, has created over 20 performances that have been staged around the world. Currently, the company is touring with seven of its latest productions, showing the very different directions of their pursuit, from two more ‘conventional’ dance performances through to a visual concert, a performative installation, and three performance-portraits, i.e.: RITE of SPRING – EXTENDED, MEN&MAHLER, 2men2mahler, Dance me to the end on/off love, W[doubleyou]-UNDERTOW, A Portrait of Anne Eisensee and Aline not Alone. 24

HamletScenen at Kronborg Castle, Scandinavia’s leading Shakespeare theatre, has a variety of activities, all based on Shakespeare’s universal drama about identity, existence and meaning. HamletScenen is uniquely situated on Hamlet’s Island with a view out to the world famous Renaissance castle which appears on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites and is famous as Hamlet’s castle in Elsinore. Den Jyske Opera/Danish National Opera is Denmark’s national touring opera company. Funded by the Danish Ministry of Culture and proudly based in Aarhus, Denmark’s second city, it tours across the whole country with both traditional and innovative opera for all ages, tastes and experiences. It is a distinctive, pace-setting part of the Danish cultural scene and for decades has presented productions of the highest artistic quality. With a fulltime chorus as part of 65 artistic, administrative and technical staff, it performs regularly at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and collaborates with five symphony orchestras including the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

Annika B. Lewis creates innovative contemporary performing arts at the intersection of dance, theatre and performance art. She challenges theatre concepts and creates work distinguished by strong conceptual and visual elements, mixing the trivial with the philosophical. Her work is characterised by skewed and humorous angles, often with multiple layers and the use of multimedia – in a boundary-defying and complex scenic expression. Lewis explores new performative spaces, places and concepts. In addition to traditional theatre venues, her performances have been staged at private apartments, caravans, fairs, abandoned factories and on the Internet. Lewis continues to tour the world, create international collaboration projects and be interested in new partnerships, touring opportunities and artist-in-residencies. The award-winning company Rapid Eye works within the field of contemporary circus, dance, and object theatre. Rapid Eye’s new performance, Kaspar, is based on the true story of Kaspar Hauser. Kaspar grew up imprisoned and isolated from human contact for 16 years. He entered society without a language or civilized behavior. Kaspar, the feral child, was socialized and educated with limited success by his carers. His life ended abruptly with a mysterious knife assault. Rapid Eye explores how lack of language can estrange the individual, in a performance based on classic drama, movement and artistry. Kaspar is created by an international cast, including the Hungarian choreographer Imre Vass, French scenographer Miguel Pelleterat and Samuel Gustavsson amongst others. Rapid Eye will be touring in 2014 with Kaspar and QUIPROQUO.

Danish performer, storyteller and singer Katrine Faber founded Teater Viva in 2007, and makes performances for people of all ages. Berstad / Helgebostad / Wigdel has been defined as a powerful group with a strong artistic signature. The trio’s work is characterised by visually strong concepts, intense outbursts and withdrawal of energy, and a playful and experimental attitude towards performance art and dance. This up-and-coming trio creates performance art in dialogue with contemporary drama and dramatists. Their latest performance ‘Jordjenta’, which premiered at the Black Box Theatre in Oslo in September 2013, was inspired by Maria Tryti Vennerød’s new same-titled script. ‘Jordjenta’ has been described as a liberating contribution in terms of gender discourse. The group consists of performers and choreographers Ingeleiv Berstad, Kristin Helgebostad and Ida Wigdel. Berstad and Helgebostad’s collaboration started during their MA in Choreography studies at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, where they graduated in summer 2012. Wigdel has performed with the Ingun Bjørnsgaard Prosjekt Zero Visibility company and is one of the choreographers for The Line Dance Company. 82

NONcompany is a multidisciplinary performance group based in Bergen, Norway. Consisting of artists from different fields, the company works with a mix of theatre, music, film and visual art. Panta Rei Dance Theatre’s last production ’I Wish Her Well’ is an intricate performance, combining storytelling, high-tempo energy and an evocative sound score by British composer Nathaniel Reed that infuses the performance with melody and atmosphere. It is a captivating production that seeks to move and engage. Act one is based on the stories of four women who are closely related to the dancers, whilst act two is based on the diaries of a 16 year-old girl. She is now an 82 year-old woman who generously shared her thoughts and experiences with the choreographers and dancers.

The Line is a satirical humour concept led by Ida Wigdel and Kristina Søetorp. They carelessly mix references from different dance genres, playing rudely around with clichés and hackneyed twists to highlight and comment on weaknesses and cultures in society. They are known for having a strong connection with the audience and how they intimately unveil their personalities within their concept. Their latest performance ’Near.Far.Wherever You Are’ had its premiere in spring 2013 on the main stage at Dance House Oslo with full houses. Their political undertone has caused a lot of engagement and discussion about how satirical dance can cause friction and question problematic subjects such as power structures and stereotypes surrounding gender. The company also works with film, and has produced the dance films ’BEyond’ and ’BEt(we)en’. ’BEyond’ has been shown at dance film festivals in Scandinavia, Belgium, China, South Africa, Lebanon and Mexico.

Andersson Dance is an ever-changing constellation of artists in the field of dance collaborating with choreographer Örjan Andersson, based in Stockholm, Sweden. Andersson Dance is analogous to Örjan Andersson’s artistry and language derived from vastly different experiences of creating choreographic works. This language and his fascination with space and the amount we occupy has been and remains in focus. Choreographer Björn Säfsten’s work aims to suggest another dramaturgy in relation to how we view movement and the body, the individual and mass. In his work, he explores movement as a constructing element of meaning in our daily communication. Transmission – a vibrotactile experience is one of her latest creations, a dance and technology experiment focusing on the sensory system. Letting the tactile take precedence over the visible or audible, six dancers respond to electromagnetic impulses received through vibrators attached to the body. Transmission is a dialogue between dancers and audiences communicating via remote controls. It makes for a thrilling, innovative experience.

Malin Hellkvist Sellén is one of Sweden’s most questioning and intriguing choreographers, with pieces for both adults and children on her résumé. Often referring to her work as physical reflections on a specific theme or topic, she alternates between solo performances and larger group pieces. Her choreography is as expressly political and philosophical as it is sensuous, physical and emotional. Hellkvist Sellén examines choreography as a corporeal and linguistic practice. Her latest creations ’Within reasonable limits’ (2011) and ’Ongoing’ (2012) have both emanated from the diverse ways of including the general public in the creative process. 2014 Malin opens ’I remember you as you were then’, a piece that starts 2013 with the collection of stories from anyone interested in contributing about matters they can’t let go of.

Marika Hedemyr is a Swedish artist combining choreography and philosophy in the context of public spaces: in other words, she works with bodies, ideas and our contemporary urban society. She creates work for public spaces, theatre stages and film. She divides her time between freelance engagements for theatre and dance companies, art venues, as well as own productions for Crowd Company where she is artistic director. Hedemyr’s work is characterised by mundane situations in a twisted reality, a high degree of identification, humour and physicality. At the same time, her works destabilise and question familiar situations. The sound elements in her stage productions are either new or rewritten works by contemporary composers. In her series of pop-up performances for public locations, she has developed a format that requires no technique, but creates strong situations through the performers’ and participators’ actions and choreography.

Through simplicity we experience movement in a new perspective Memory Wax is a dance company with a strong visual expression and a naked theatrical language. Minna Krook is one of the most well-established choreographers of dance performances for children. She created, among other things, the first dance performance in Sweden for babies, ‘Oh, Hello Baby’, with which the company received a lot of positive attention. Performed regularly since its premiere in 2004, her performance ‘ALL GONE!’ has been hailed by critics as ‘a classic’. SNOW is a dance work by Swedish choreographer and filmmaker Pontus Lidberg that contrasts the fleeting and fragile human reality of existence with the enduring character of nature. The work was commissioned by NorrlandsOperan: The Opera House of Northern Sweden for its 2013 centenary presentation of Stravinsky’s score The Rite of Spring. Rather than focusing on the ritualistic elements embedded in the iconic music or paying homage to the European art movement known as Primitivism, Lidberg instead uses the wild, forceful season of the score as a counterpoint to his intimate choreography for four dancers and a bunraku-style puppet.

The Weather Performance is a performing sculpture about the conflict between man and the weather. A battle that is escalating as the global temperature rises. We are midway between heaven and earth and we take the pulse of a burning topic that concerns us and our time with increasing intensity. The idea of controlling the weather is as old as humanity itself. Throughout history, humans have developed count less methods to predict shifts in weather. But these activities have intensified in recent years, as human impact on the global climate has become increasingly evident. The performance/installation is an extension of the film “the Weather War” from 2012 and aims to create a live situation that stems from the same research material as the film. The Weather Performance is a collaboration between the performance group Force Majeure and the artists Bigert & Bergström. Force Majeure has done performances and installations throughout Scandinavia since 1997. Bigert & Bergström have worked together since 1990, creating a vast number of exhibitions, documentary films and public art.
