MADE IN

You are holding in your hand a guide and a navigation tool. It is made for presenters and programmers who are looking for artists. It can also be used by artists and companies who are looking for audiences or collaborative partners for future international projects. We want to give you a better view of the performing arts in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. It is always difficult to try to put a label on art from a certain part of the world. The Nordic countries inhabit a vast space of land with lots of forests, mountains and plains where there are few people and the big cities are far apart. We believe that highly interesting artistic work always has a flavour of its origin.

MADE IN 2012

MADE IN 2012

Music has a strong status historically and is a major ingredient in a lot of the work that is produced. The scene is diverse and a lot of new young companies and venues are working in non-traditional ways. Theatre and dance for children are also very vibrant and have a long history. Contemporary circus is an emerging new art form and contemporary dance and theatre have a strong position. You will often find a tone of beautiful sadness and melancholy in an artistic work from the Nordic countries. Humour is a frequent ingredient. It may be ironic or absurd, but we love to laugh. We hope that you will discover something new, original and disturbing with which to feed your audience in this guide. Ă…sa Edgren, project leader The Fair Project. 3

LOCO WORLD - SE Loco World is based in Stockholm, Sweden. It is an Agency, a manager of Projects, a provider of Help in artist management services, consulting, international promotion and education. In Loco Accounting it provides accounting services. It also engages in political lobbying for better opportunities for independent artists to work in professional conditions. Distribution and visibility are crucial elements when launching new – often unusual – work of unknown artists from an unknown region of the world. Visibility of the artist rather than sales was the main objective when developing the organization. Loco World distinguishes itself in this way from more traditional sales agencies. The idea of presenting Swedish artists at fairs and markets around the world emerged in 2008. The Fair Project was born. The work of the office focuses on close collaboration with artists and their needs. The goal is to develop ideas and structures that strengthen their art and make production and touring processes more effective. Åsa Edgren, CEO/Founder asa.edgren@locoworld.se www.locoworld.se

ARTISTS & COMPANIES The MADE IN catalogue 2012 is financed by the artists and institutions that are presented in it. In the Nordic countries there are other companies that have international activities or productions designed for the international market. The selection in this book is based on the motivation of the artists themselves. ENJOY!

AABEN DANS AABEN DANS, the only regional dance theatre in Denmark, is based in Roskilde just 30 km outside of Copenhagen. The theatre produces two new performances per year – one for adults and one for young audiences – with which they tour both nationally and internationally. The age of the audience varies from babies to adults. Aaben Dans has been led by artistic director and choreographer Thomas Eisenhardt and theatre director Lisbeth Klixbüll since 1997.

Aaben Dans is able to change style and expression from performance to performance. However, the nonabstract humanity performed with the body is one of the trademarks as long with a direct communication with the audience. The theatre works closely with style – music, visual art and architecture – and is not afraid of taking chances and being radical in exploring the possibilities within dance in new contexts. Aaben Dans wants to challenge boundaries and use a mix of humour, insanity, seriousness and aesthetics. Aaben Dans wants to make avant garde popular. 17

Cantabile 2 is an international performance theatre based in Vordingborg, Denmark, under the artistic direction of Italian Nullo Facchini. The company, which was founded in 1983, has established itself as one of the most important Scandinavian performance theatres on the basis of its extraordinarily vivid visual language, often combining poetic and humorous features in unique, sensual imagery. After two decades of work with its main focus on site-specific theatre, Cantabile 2’s research is now oriented towards transformation from site-specific to humanspecific performance. Human-specific performance deals with the universal sensitivity of humans as emotional beings and relates to its spectators as individuals and not as a mass.

CARTE BLANCHE (DK) Carte Blanche experiments with a performance language in which logic and understanding follow the erratic, associative mentality that we know from dreams. Their performances find their basis in children’s ability to be abstract and immediate. In the same way that children play, the dramaturgy makes complex and lateral connections between ideas expressed in a poetic and sensoryrich performance style. Movement, action, sound, and light create rhythmic patterns that combine to create dynamic harmony.

GRANHØJ DANS – ongoing research in the performing arts Danish choreographer Palle Granhøj has won international recognition for his unique stage language. Based on the Obstruction Technique, he reshapes the movements of the performers by means of hindering actions, revealing inner layers of their personality in the process, thus turning the spotlight on the human condition. Rather than showing choreographies, he wants to present human beings on stage, as complex as they can be. Through the years, Palle Granhøj, together with visual designer Per Victor and his collaborating performers, has created over 20 performances that have been staged around the world. Currently, the company is touring with five of its latest productions, showing the very different directions of their search, from a more “conventional” dance performance through a visual concert, a performative installation, and a couple of portrait performances: 2men2mahler, Dance me to the end on/off love, W[doubleyou]-UNDERTOW, A Portrait of Anne Eisensee and Aline not Alone. 24

ANNIKA B LEWIS | KASSANDRA PRODUCTION Annika B. Lewis creates innovative contemporary performing arts at the intersection of dance, theatre and performance art. She challenges theatre concepts and creates work characterised by a strong conceptual and visual outcome, mixing the trivial with the philosophical. Her work is signified by skewed and humorous angles, often with multiple fictional layers and the use of multimedia expressions, in a border-defying and complex scenic expression. Lewis explores new performative spaces, places and concepts. Performances have been staged at private apartments, caravans, fairs, old factories and on the Internet, as well as in traditional theatre venues. Lewis tours the world, creates international collaboration projects and is interested in new partnerships, touring opportunities and opportunities for artist-in-residencies. THE JOURNEY OF THE PHOENIX - the price of transformation A mythical dance theatre concert based on the transformational story of the Phoenix. Eivör Pálsdóttir, musical treasure of Faroe Islands, Reijo Kela, the unique experimental dancer from Finland, and María Ellingsen, an actress from Iceland, breathe life into this symbolic myth. They take the audience into a dreamlike world for a close encounter with the actor and the dancer as the singer casts a spell. Myths serve as roadmaps when travelling through unfamiliar territory. The story of the Phoenix gives the audience an opportunity to reflect on their personal experience, to travel with the bird into the fire where it burns to ashes, transforms and takes to the skies again – reminding us that at the bottom of the abyss is the voice of salvation.

KVISS BÚMM BANG The extended life performance group Kviss Búmm Bang has made the normal and the abnormal their main fields of study. Kviss Búmm Bang believes that everything can and should be questioned, and they do that by creating a world and a social structure that participants can go into and experience. Participants may acquire a new name, a new partner, a new home and a script to follow; you may experience the work totally alone or with others. In most instances there is no audience, only willing participants. Eva Björk Kaaber, Eva Rún Snorradóttir and Vilborg Ólafsdóttir have been working together in Kviss Búmm Bang since early 2009. Eva Björk holds an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmith University in London, Eva Rún and Vilborg Ólafsdóttir are graduates of the Iceland Academy of the Arts, programme of theory & practice. ME AND MY FRIENDS Me and my friends theatre-collective creates devised performances that aspire to explore human behaviour and impulses. In their first production, HUMANIMAL, 2009, which was acclaimed by critics and received 9 nominations for the Icelandic Theatre Awards, they set the tone for collaboration that cast doubt on the distinction between theatre, dance and the visual arts. HUMANIMAL is a kaleidoscopic view of the primal aspects of human behaviour: our drives, our malfunctions, and our excesses. Humanimal toured in Manitoba, Canada in 2010. In their most recent production, BE MY GUEST, 2011, the group continued its research in a playful exploration of humans as social beings. ME AND MY FRIENDS invites you to a gathering where the party animal is dissected, how it is revealed when it is vulnerable, lonely, hungry. The social being defends itself, dances, is pompous and yearns for a real connection. BE MY GUEST received three nominations for the Icelandic Theatre Awards. Both performances are available for touring. 58

REYKJAVIK CITY THEATRE FAUST, a new production by Reykjavík City Theatre and the successfully radical Vesturport Theatre, features yet another collaborative effort by the formidable Gísli Örn Garðarsson and Nick Cave. THE PEOPLE IN THE BASEMENT is a powerful, bittersweet story and a reckoning with both the 1968 generation and traditional ideas about life. The authors won the Icelandic Drama Award as the best playwrights of 2011. LITTLE JESUS is an adventurous adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew as told by clowns. The heart-warming, revelatory, and strikingly original performance was the unquestioned winner of the Icelandic Drama Award in 2010, the Production of the Year, while the script received the Playwright of the Year award. YOU ARE HERE is a play taken straight from the reality of Iceland. The country is in the throes of a financial meltdown. What’s it like? Who’s to blame? THE THIEF The Thief is a new, cutting-edge theatre company. Its first production reconstructs one of Iceland’s best known plays, Eyvind of the Mountains; a true classic of Icelandic drama since 1911. The play is based on the popular folktale of a wealthy young woman who gives up everything to join her outlaw lover. The author, Jóhann Sigurjónsson, was hailed by contemporary critics as a peer of Ibsen and Strindberg. This particular production of Eyvind of the Mountains uses old radio recordings of the play, choreography from a Godard film and a minimalistic setting and lighting. The dense and focused performance tells the story of love and sacrifice in hostile surroundings. Eyvind of the Mountains was nominated for the Icelandic theatre awards “Griman” as the best performance of the year in 2011 and was invited to the International theatre festival Lokal in Iceland in September of the same year. This production of Eyvind of the Mountains was recorded for Radio One in Iceland. 68

With her beautiful, playful and well-composed productions, she has won the acclaim of both Norwegian and international audiences. In 1992 she founded the Ingun Bjørnsgaard Prosjekt (IBP). Bjørnsgaard is the first Norwegian artist to have received the Norwegian dance critics’ award twice. Omega and the Deer (2011), which paints over Edvard Munch’s series “Alfa & Omega” with a density of movement, explores the modern human condition’s paradoxical and androgynous self-perception. In Munch’s archetypical and erotic universe, Bjørnsgaard finds resonance for her flirtation with the battle of the sexes, obscenity and alienation

HENRIETTE PEDERSEN Henriette Pedersen is a choreographer who works somewhere between theatre, dance and the visual arts. Her expression stretches from the subtle introvert to the explosive extrovert, from hysteria to romance. She is known for challenging gender conventions, as well as for her unconditional love for her audience. Her performance trilogy Animal Magnetism (AM) revolves around the theme of hysteria. As an Orlando of hysteria, performer Kristine Karåla Øren walks through time and expresses the evolution of hysteria. From classic hysteria (AM1) through the dirty and suppressive aspects of female sexuality, with references to Freud’s theories of penis envy (AM2), and all the way to male hysteria (AM3). In her new trilogy, Riding Romance, Pedersen will perform a make-over of some central works of the romantic era, starting with the ballet Swan Lake. Then she will work her way through one of Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings until she reaches the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood.

VERK PRODUKSJONER Winner of the Norwegian Hedda Prize 2011: ”Best performance of the year” Pär Lagerkvist (1891-1974) was a Swedish author, poet and winner of the 1951 Nobel prize in literature. His work revolves largely around the subject of people’s relationship to god. In 1920 he wrote The eternal smile which tells of a large group of dead people who are sitting somewhere in the darkness. Their location is unknown to them, perhaps nowhere; they sit and converse to pass the time – or rather eternity. As thousands of years pass, they become restless and start to question the meaning of it all. The enormous congregation of the dead becomes agitated and finally they rise up, determined to seek out God and get an answer. Verk Productions is known for its epic and vaudeville form of acting with satirical and political undertones, alternating rapidly between storytelling, acting and improvisation. 82

- The choreography, as always with Svenzon’s work, is physical, demanding and violent. It demands dancers with hypersensitivity to timing and clear phrasing… …with the women lifting, throwing and carrying and the men gentle in an embrace there are no traditional gender roles here. - The choreography is indeed demarcated and strong.

He consciously plays with the performer in time and space; juxtaposing, stacking, interlocking and morphing hybrid moments and movements. Stolen images, frozen moments and carefully selected details are exposed, framed between stillness and motion. In his latest independent production “How About You?” Philippe explores the search for oneself in the other. “There is more of me somewhere else. Somewhere perhaps where I have never been. Someone that I have never met. Someone that I know, that looks like me or feels like me but is not me. I even suspect that I am not myself. She has developed several close collaborative projects with musicians from the Scandinavian pop scene. The music and the dance challenge each other, creating a nerve and density running through the dynamics of the moving body. Helena Franzén has created works for the Göteborg Ballet, Skånes Dansteater, Norrdans, DDT Company and the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, etc. In autumn 2012 Franzén will present her new creation Slipping Through My Fingers at Dansens Hus, Stockholm as well as touring with the performance I’m Not Looking Back within DanceNet Sweden.

MARIKA HEDEMYR | CROWD COMPANY Marika Hedemyr is a Swedish choreographer of contemporary dance. She creates dance theatre for stages and public locations, averaging of one or two productions per year. Since 2000 she has been the artistic director and choreographer of Crowd Company, based in Gothenburg. Hedemyr currently divides her time between freelance engagements and her own productions for Crowd Company. I denna ljuva, photographer: Anna von Brömssen

She finds inspiration in pedestrian movements, nonverbal communication and challenging the borders and venues for dance performances. She is often engaged in international projects on artistic practice. Hedemyr’s work is characterized by mundane situations in a twisted reality, a high degree of identification, humour and physicality. The musical elements in her stage productions are either new or rewritten works by contemporary composers. In her pop-up pieces for public locations, she deliberately uses only the dancer’s character and the choreography – no set design, sound or light.

GUNILLA HEILBORN Gunilla Heilborn is a choreographer and filmmaker based in Stockholm known for work imbued with openness, lightness and a touch of irony.

“When the duo dances together, lightly, artlessly and freely, the irony falls away, exposing the unassuming person beneath. Pure perfection. ”Örjan Abrahamsson, Swedish national daily, Dagens Nyheter This is not a love story is co-produced by NXT-STEP, Norrlandsoperan and Dansens Hus, Stockholm. 106

The new production on the 2012 repertoire is entitled ’This is not a love story’. It embodies a delicate search for context and connections, which always seem to be slightly beyond our reach. The story is not about the destination, but about the transformation and reflection while on the path. The journey keeps starting over and over again. It’s a story of two reluctant heroes – Kowalski and Vera. At least those are their names in one of the scenes. They talk, dance and never stop asking questions: Who did what? When? Where? And why?

MALIN HELLKVIST SELLÉN Choreographer Malin Hellkvist Sellén has earned a position as one of Sweden’s most intriguing movement examiners during the 10 years since her debut. Often referring to her work as physical reflections on a specific theme or topic, she alternates between solo performances and larger group pieces. Her dance is as clearly political and philosophical as sensuous, physical and emotional. Hellkvist Sellén’s recurring themes are normativity, identity and a search for contexts in which movement is justified. Among her latest creations is ”Pink promises”, a solo for Marianne Kjaserund deriving from examinations of certain modes of social dancing and bodies politic. In 2010 Hellkvist opened ”Within reasonable limits”, a piece that emanated from an open public call for non-professional and professional dancers. She is currently starting a twoyear project entitled ”At your service”. Hellkvist Sellén’s work has gained her a large following that returns to her performances over and over.

Iraqi Bodies is a dance group formed in 2002 in Baghdad, currently residing in Gothenburg and Amsterdam. Iraqi Bodies in Sweden is run by choreographer and dancer Anmar Taha. In exploring and investigating the connections between dance and physical theatre, the group has gained unanimous critical acclaim over the last couple of years. With moving performances such as “The Sleepers” and “Unidentified,” the group has managed to carve out a unique niche for itself in the field of contemporary dance. It’s a world where sparse lighting, silence and near immobility are coupled with seemingly erratic yet repetitive movements, at times creating an atmosphere of discomfort and unease but also tremendous beauty. Using almost archaic movements and textures, the aim is to articulate feelings of loss, frustration and isolation, but perhaps to also show a tiny sliver of light and hope. Their newest piece Vowels will premiere in Gothenburg in 2012.
