Simple Vision 2004

Page 1

This innovative range of furniture has been designed to enhance your living space and the environment in simple practical ways. The design process has been informed by three principles, sustainability, utility and aesthetic.

Philosophy - vision

Manufacture - Quality

Materials - Sustainability

It was a Japanese art critic Soyetsu Yanagi at the turn of the 20th century who said utility is the first principle of beauty . This may not mean form follows function, but that the utility is an integrated and important part of the design.

All Simple Vision products are machined and assembled with the special attention to detail only to be found among real craftsman.

All of our materials are carefully chosen for their sustainability and quality.

Timber is an important component and Elliott s Furniture Company (with over 160 years of accumulated cabinet making experience between them) combining old school craft with modern CNC machinery to create precision work. This ensures the integrity of our designs are transferred seamlessly from our CAD models to machine.

Thermally modified radiata timber: originates from sustainably managed, New Zealand forest plantations. Heating it at very high temperatures in an inert (oxygen-free) kiln environment, causes changes in the cellular structure of the wood. Moisture content is significantly reduced, which increases the wood s stability, and renders it highly resistant to moisture and decay-causing fungi. The treatment also causes changes to the colour of the wood. Currently it is available in five colours ranging from a golden tone to dark brown.

In the legendary book How to wrap five eggs written by Hideuki Oka, it shows how materials can be made to contribute powerfully to simple functional concepts. Our design work embodies these ideals. Each material is handled to show its strengths and bring out its aesthetic characteristics. The designs engage people and respond to their needs whilst functioning effectively in their lives for a long time. Sustainable furniture The Simple Vision range has been developed with a focus on sustainable product design. This is something we take from the design, materials, packaging of the works, to their life cycle. These pieces are designed to be packed down for transportation without compromising the appearance. This reduces the ecological cost of transport loading and is more efficient. To achieve this we have designed fittings, and used quality fittings where available. Stainless fasteners ensure the durability of your furniture and can be cleaned easily to keep them looking their best. By using plantation grown timber we can be sure that the ecologically valuable trees are being replanted, and the materials are sustainable. This is further enhanced by our commitment to using new technologies such as Green Seal (cellulose hardened pine) and Thermally modified timber for exterior use, instead of indigenous hardwoods.

Construction - Assembly We have invested a lot of design time trying to make our furniture disassemble without being detrimental to the appearance or quality of your piece. Why?, we can create major savings on freight from an environmental perspective, as freight and transport has a significant impact on the environment. Not only that, but in a world where people are moving more often, it is great to be able to move your furniture more conveniently. To achieve this we have combined ideas of folding and disassembly, we provide simple instructions in order for you to be able to assemble and disassemble the articles easily. We also have the instructions on our website for your reference At in a PDF form for download. Packaging All the work we produce is packaged with card and paper. This eliminates the unnecessary use of plastic. The disassembly construction style provides the frame work for simple and effective packaging that also helps prevent damage to the work in transit.

220 Thermo Wood

Because of its altered state, thermally modified timber is suitable for a wide range of applications both indoor and outdoor. Significantly, most properties of thermally modified timber resemble those of tropical hardwoods. Thermally modified timber offers a chemical-free, sustainable alternative to these hardwoods. Burma Green Seal

Green Seal solidwood: is created by processing plantation timber to give it the physical properties of a hardwood, whilst creating a unique appearance. The cells in the wood are impregnated with a naturally-based, cellulose material essentially pouring wood into wood thus increasing the density and hardness. The result is an environmentally sensitive material which originates from sustainable, managed radiata plantation forests in New Zealand. Morocco Green Seal

Green Seal solidwood is a versatile material which has uses ranging from furniture design to flooring and joinery. It has six colours in the same material which

offers great flexibility to meet peoples specific needs without compromising our material selection. Stainless Steel Although energy intensive to produce, this metal is strong, durable, does not require finishing or coating and has a high value so is reused. We believe by using high quality materials the articles will last longer and create lasting value for our customers. Stainless Steel

All the fasteners used are 304 or 316 stainless steel. Acrylic Cotton Fabric This robust fabric has been designed for outdoor use and has a long life that is fit for purpose. Fabric

Ceramics One of the great materials, we use our own designs that are slip cast and fired with a resilient vitreous finish, so they can be put in the dish washer and cleaned easily. Ceramics

2 Stoe Divider Unit Stoe; from the word Stow; (to pack something away tidily and compactly) is a divider to stash a range of items. This versatile room divider/storage unit is constructed from solid timber and machined so as to allow light to filter through the back screen providing glimpses of the objects stowed, whether they are books, pottery or domestic objects. The precision machined shelving can be adjusted to a variety of heights then fixed firmly in place. With such a new outdoor material we sought to create a unique indoor/outdoor object. Stoe is an exploration of this idea and could be used for herbs or bonsai, the lattice-like screen also providing an ideal trellis for climbing plants.

3 Jeeves table Jeeves is like a Rolls old boy, there to serve your needs. This table offers a new dining alternative. Its legs can be folded away and it can be readily moved, so can be used indoor and outdoors. A key feature of the table are the circular recesses in the table surface, three corrugated ceramic disks sit in these creating the ideal surface to put hot dishes on consequently preventing damage to the table surface. The presenting and enjoyment of food is one of the oldest pleasures known to man. The Jeeves table aims to provide people with a canvas on which they may create and engage in that enjoyable activity.

1 Fernleif Bench Seat Fernleif derived from the quintessential New Zealand butter, Fern leaf, semi-soft that is, sculptured like a knife peeling a knob of butter out of the seat pan. The clean lines of the seat are detailed carefully with the scalloped base and the sandwich of two different colours of timber. The splayed stainless steel legs are locked into the seat pan via a 90 degree piece of Stainless angle. This ensures the structure is solid and robust. This three-person bench seat is suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments.

5 Clint Coffee Table Shoot a few holes in the table Clint said, so we did. Inspired by a Surfboard company called Seasons on the West Coast of New Zealand. They created a revolutionary surfboard with holes cut directly though the core and then fibre glassed over. This has the dual benefit of making the board lighter and stiffer. This nifty little talking point is also made without holes (sorry clint) for those preferring a simpler aesthetic, whilst retaining the key design cues.

6 Blane Stool A float plane, a bi-plane and out of them comes Blane . A tall stool with elegant style that can be used at the bar, breakfast table or work bench. The deep solid timber seat pan is edge glued to give a ribbon appearance to the timber. The fabricated stainless steel base penetrates up through slots in the seat pan exposing a fastening detail. The upholstered cushion provides additional comfort as well as giving the stool visual warmth.

The machined details illustrate the great properties of Green Seal solid wood enabling precise detailing in the beautiful texture of the timber surface.

4 Garcon chair

7 Stirling shelf

Appropriately named after a French waiter, Garcon combines the relaxed style of outdoor seating with the more formal indoor dining to produce an elegant new design. Garcon was designed to complement the Jeeves table through appearance, function, and materials.

Stirling Moss, Stirling Silver, Stirling engine, and now the Stirling Shelf. A solution to the problem of finding a sylish simple but well made shelf for around the home, something that wont embarrass your trinkets or family slide show.

The chair is made from timber, stainless steel and fabric. The chairs unique construction makes it a comfortable and welcoming chair to sit down for both dining or a little breakfast paper reading.

The shelf brackets install easily and then the timber shelf clips in and is fixed in place. The sterling shelf is designed for standard stud distances (600mm) but also recognises that some may be more creatively placed so can be adjusted to ensure a solid fix to the wall. It is available in two lengths to cater for different storage requirements.
