Foreign Rights Catalogue Spring 2016

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Loewe’s new spring programme is all about extraordinary illustrations. Explore exciting processes that happen in our bodies in THERE’S LOTS GOING ON INSIDE MY BODY (p. 3) with numerous flaps and surprising facts. TAFITI (p. 32 – 35) conquers new genres! He makes his first appearance in a picture book and school starters can count on Tafiti’s support with new Learning Activity Books. Starting school is also the topic of the new series PEPPER, MINT AND SCHOOL (p. 26/27). Irmgard Kramer tells the charming story of the fear and excitement before the first day at school – for children and new teachers alike. A school secret service operates from the decadent girls’ loo, glamorously portrayed by Vera Schmidt. LOUISE GOES LOOPIE LOO (p. 50/51) is the start of a new, wonderfully weird series for girls aged 10 and up by ingenious Sonja Kaiblinger. Louise knows all about loos and what happens behind their closed doors … A SUMMER WITHOUT US (p. 65) is an intimate story about first love and doubts. Sabine Both gently empathizes with 17-year-old Verena and the lure of being with someone else than her long-term boyfriend Tom. We hope you enjoy our new programme and look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards to wherever you are! Your Loewe Foreign Rights Team

NEW

Irmgard Kramer Pfeffer, Minze und die Schule Pepper, Mint and School no. 8258, 17.5 × 24.5 cm, colour illustrations by Petra Eimer, 112 pages, January 2016, 5+

This new series from former primary school teacher Irmgard Kramer is perfect for reading aloud to the whole family. Simply and lovingly narrated, and with plenty of laughs along the way, this first book tells the story of little Pepper and how he conquers his fear of starting school.

Irmgard Kramer was born in 1969 in Vorarlberg and grew up in an old house that felt alive. After nineteen years of being a primary school teacher, she threw away her chalks and now lives as a freelance author among mountains, cows and cheeses in Bregenzerwald. She writes stories for young and older readers. © Darko Todorovic

Things are only scary when they’re unfamiliar: that’s what Nico Peppercorn, aka Pepper, has learned from his mum. And because Pepper and his friends Olli and Paula are due to start school at the end of the summer and are determined not to be scared when the time comes, they decide to spy on their future teacher. Mint (Miss Kamintsky is too hard to say) is so lovely that the children are instantly besotted with her. But she seems sad and worried – there is clearly something on her mind. Is she ill? The butcher, Mint’s boyfriend, soon lets them in on a secret: the real reason Mint seems so troubled is that she is scared of going to school too! It’s her first day as a teacher …

‘A deeply profound story, which deals so humorously with the theme of being different that one cannot help but love this book.’

A Question to Ursula Poznanski Raoul Bornheim, a character in your new book LAYERS, holds the radical moral concept that it is legit to harm individuals for the benefit of society. Where does this idea descend from? The basic idea that public welfare precedes individual good can be traced back to Aristotle. Now, this idea is interpreted by Bornheim in a way that clearly overstates the case. All the more as only he personally defines public welfare in a highly arbitrary way.
