he rose is a flower that has a long history in Chinese culture, dating back to the 11th Century B.C. In Beijing, the world’s first rose museum has been built. Designed by NEXT architects, the architectural design is defined by a stainless steel shell, patterned with smooth stencilled Chinese rose cut outs. China is enriched with beautiful traditional architecture, however, with the ‘Rose Museum’, along with other recent builds such as ‘The Piano House’ and ‘Beijing’s Bird Building’, the countries status in regard to it’s architecture has moved into a successfully modern era. NEXT Architects China partner, Jiang Xiaofei explains that ‘the rose museum aims to create a new architecture for China, in which history and modernity, art and architecture blend’.
16 | LOFT-LIVING.COM
The building was host to the World Rose Convention, in which over 30 countries showcased 2,000 species of rose across the 100 acre rose park. The perforated stainless steel that encases the museum, measures 300 meters and creates a constant changing light show across the four half-open courtyards. Due to China’s historical connection with the flower along with it’s culturally inspired design, the Rose Museum in Beijing was an obvious choice to host the rose convention. John Van De Water, partner at NEXT architects, stated that ‘the main challenge with the rose museum was to find a modern Chinese identity for a building which significance is so deeply rooted into Chinese culture.’ highlighting the success in China’s move to modern architecture.

P
rior to the opening of the Beijing National Stadium, the stadium was already considered an icon for Beijing and a symbol for modern China. The Beijing National Stadium is one of the most imposing stadiums in the world and its apparently casual structure has immediately conquered the people of Beijing who renamed it “The Bird’s Nest” for the complex geometry of the outer façade. The stadium was projected by architects Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with ArupSport and China Architecture Design & Research Group to host the 2008 Olympic Games. It had a total spectator capacity of 91 000 but was reduced to 80 000 after the Olympic event. The stadium is characterized by a large concrete structure supporting the tiers laid in an

imposing independent steel structure that represents both the façade and the roof that looks like a interweaved net of beams made of steel.
The Bird’s Nest The structure made of steel is actually the result of a complex geometry, based on a main structure of 24 pillars and characterized by curving beams that disappear in the ground, reappear along the entire façade of the stadium and curve to tangentially go towards the central opening of the roof. The structure is completed by a series of secondary beams and contains more than 7 500 separate elements, mounting to a total weight of 42 tons and a total length of 36 km. In accordance with the design complexity, the stadium also required special attention to an increased risk
of earthquakes that are common in Beijing. A semitransparent membrane called EFTA was inserted between the several beams of steel that the roof is rich of. This membrane enables the sunlight to go through and to offer the stadium a sense of lightness (which is one the typical concepts of the Bird’s Nest). According to Chinese symbolism, when seen in contraposition from the nearby National Aquatics Centre (the new Olympic venue for water sports), the circular shape of the stadium represents paradise, while the quadratic form of the National Aquatics Centre (also known as the Water Cube) represents the earth.

The design combines modern technologies with Chinese traditional values. In tradition, Chinese conceptualized a square Earth and a round Heaven, and this formed the design’s central theme. Moreover, the cube shape dominates ancient urban buildings. Its design is of traditional style to meet all its functional requirements.

n January 27th 2017, celebrations across the world will commence for the Chinese New Year. Usually people have 7 consecutive days off from Chinese New Year’s Eve to the sixth day after Chinese New Year’s Day.
© ibtimes.com
Traditionally the Chinese New Year is celebrated over 16 days, from New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival. Within this time period, many activities are carried out, including cleaning the house, new year shopping, putting up spring couplets, reunion dinners, fireworks, ‘sacrifices’ to ancestors, visiting friends and relatives, eating sweet dumplings and finally lighting and watching the lanterns. On the day of the actual new year, nearly all Chinese people will go out to greet and send wishes to each other. In the morning, there will be a grand imperial praying ceremony at the Temple of Heaven. Ditan Park is one of the busiest areas as it is the site of the altar where sacrifices were formerly offered to the earth god.
The Rooster Year 2017 will be the year of the Rooster in the Chinese Zodiac. The Rooster is tenth in Chinese Zodiac and are considered hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented.
Chinese Opera It’s a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China. They celebrate the new year by watching this performance. It will show about loyal personage and sometimes a great emperor’s story.
Lion Dance A traditional Chinese dance performed on big occasions, such as the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) for good luck, as it is believed that the lion is an auspicious animal.
Red Decoration People begin to decorate their houses around 10 days before. Almost all decorations involved the color red and lucky images. 2016 is a year of the Rooster, so Rooster decorations will appear.
The Dragon The Dragon symbolizes potency and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. LOFT-LIVING.COM | 23

LING JIAN
Ling moved from China to Europe in the late 1980s, a geographical transition which led to the artist’s experimentation with the body and performance art. Ling circles his practice around mass consumerism and society’s hypocritical stances on beauty ideals through various painting methods. His series of painted women are both kitsch and politically charged – their style and compositions drawn from traditional Western portraiture. Using conventionality as a framework for which to comment on society, he enlarges the eyes or reddens the lips, highlighting the hypocrisy of beauty standards, sexuality and political drama. Recently, his painting series of sharks evolved this idea further, with vague erotica themes cutting through the aggressive, feral imagery.

EDITORS PICK Asian decor has often been a popular styling for interior design. ‘Big Nose’ and Xiang Chen are two Chinese based interior designers that have taken inspiration from their traditional culture to create a modern and contemporary feel within their designs.

Chinese décor has explored a number of different trends throughout the years, but there is always an underlying aspect in this regions designs that makes it immediately identifiable. Shenzhenbased designer “Big Nose” and Hangzhou-based designer Xiang Chen have created beautiful interiors that take inspiration from traditional Chinese stylings and blended them into refreshing and modern living spaces.
Big Nose
uses warm neutral colours and artwork inspired by nature. Following influence from classic Chinese design theory, with aspects such as panelled walls to be reminiscent of the decorative screens, and mixing with modern textiles and contemporary furniture, a fresh and inviting environment is created. Big Nose’s attention to detail contributes largely to the overall success of the design. The subtle use of the five elements of the Chinese zodiac (Wu Xing); wood, fire, earth, metal and water help to create that underlying aspect to be recognisable as traditionally Chinese.
Xiang Chen has followed a more minimalist theme
throughout their project in Nanjing. Chen has taken furniture from Hans Wegner’s 1944 collection that was inspired by the Ming dynasty to demonstrate a combination of modern and traditional influences. Chen’s designs have a much more clean and airy feel to them with the use of light neutral colours, however, it is with the use of texture, such as the wood flooring and stone details that a traditional Chinese feeling is created. The use of décor around a home is ultimately what makes it feel like it is of a certain cultural influence and with both these designers, their attention to detail and use of patterns and traditional symbols is what makes these modern interiors so successful.

hang Yue, a Chinese entrepreneur has revolutionised the building industry with his use of modular construction. Modular construction is a process in which a building is constructed off-site, under controlled plant conditions, using the same materials and designing to the same codes and standards as conventionally built facilities – but in about half the time. Yue and Chinese architecture company, Broad Sustainable Building, utilised this method and created a 57-story skyscraper in just 19 days.
42 | LOFT-LIVING.COM
It is called the Mini Sky City and averaged a production rate of around three floors per day. However, as the name implies, the ‘Mini’ Sky City is just the beginning, with the Broad Group wanting to build the tallest building in the world. It will be called Sky City and stand a full 220 stories high. Using the modular construction method, Yue predicts the build should only take about seven months. When you contrast that to the five years it took to build the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, it could pave the way for a phenomenal amount of skyscrapers to be built all over the world.
Modular design isn’t a completely new concept and has been used most recognisably in a smaller scale with companies such as Ikea. Broad Group’s skyscrapers have been described as “like the Ikea Sofas of construction”. The Mini Sky City was assembled from thousands of factorymade steel modules which are then snapped into place in a ‘Tetris’ style manner. It is a method that is not only fast, but safe and cheap.
“Next year we will open in China and Australia” Director David L’Helgoualch
The Ixina Phuket store, located right at the front of the Bypass Biz Town business estate, is the first in the country, and with good reason, said Managing Director David L’Helgoualch. “Bangkok is a big market, but Phuket has the volume and the clientele we are looking for. We will get settled here first, then we can start looking at opening other branches throughout the country.“Our biggest market will be retail, and we will be targeting individual home, condo and apartment owners,” he explained. Ixina worldwide has more than 300 showrooms in more than 30 countries, and is currently in the midst of a huge international expansion. With 40 years’ experience as kitchen specialists, Ixina in 2016 alone is opening 15 branches worldwide in no less than nine countries, including Canada. “Next year we will open in China and Australia,” Mr L’Helgoualch added. Highlighting the depth of coverage Ixina may gain in Thailand, he noted, “My home country, France, is the same size as Thailand, and there are 90 branches in France alone.” Asked why the global push this year, Mr L’Helgoualch said, “We provide excellent products and service, the training programmes for our staff are excellent, and the time is right.” The kitchens range from an easily affordable B60,000 right up to B2 million for ultra-high-end creations. “And because we deal directly with the factory, customers get the best price at the start,” Mr L’Helgouach said. Opening the door to the Phuket market is the quality of kitchens already
provided. “Many condo owners are not happy with their standard kitchens. The quality is lacking. They start falling apart after just one year – worse so if the condo has been rented out to a variety of holidaymakers. Often the quality of materials and workmanship is poor and the wear and tear is too much,” Mr L’Helgoualch said.“A key difference in the product quality is the production process. It is important to point out that we do not deal in ‘flat pack’. Flat pack means the composite will have holes where the screws go in to assemble the units, and these holes allow the humidity in Phuket to get inside the unit and warp the boards,” he explained.“This simply does not happen with our units because they do not have these holes. Our units are heat fused in a factory near Dusseldorf – and tested to ensure they pass European standards – and then shipped as single units. And this is why our guarantee is for five years.”Large orders from developers are of course accepted, but this market is secondary to the individual owners, he added. Bringing Euro-quality service to Phuket is the “Personabled” credo upheld by Ixina, which itself is a Belgian-French creation. Staff “advisors” are there to assist clients from the moment they walk through the door until their own personalised kitchen is fitted in their home. The four “advisors” on staff are all trained by Inixa, and Thai, English and French is spoken at the store. “They are all trained to provide a full service. They will talk through the design, style and materials the customer likes – and the budget the customer has set,” Mr L’Helgouach
GERMAN KITCHENS
explained.“And before taking the order, they will personally visit the home to take accurate measurements of the space where the kitchen is to be fitted. Sometimes we get architectural plans, and they might be a little out,” he said. The service doesn’t end there. “The advisor will also be on hand to make sure there are no misunderstandings when the kitchen is fitted – and our team who fits the kitchens have been trained by German staff flown out here to train them. They know how to make all the little adjustments to make sure your kitchen fits perfectly.”The range of designs, style and finishes for the kitchens is huge. “Customers can mix and match. We have new styles, designs and finishes every year – right now we have 80 different forms, including glass, lacquer and laminate,” said Mr L’Helgouach.“Also, all our samples are in A4 format, which makes it much easier for a person to decide if it’s what they want, and they choose the style of handle they like too,” he added.Ixina offers much more than what’s on display at the store. The catalogue is full of highquality appliances, fixtures and fittings, such as sinks, mixer taps and worktops, to choose from.“We also offer a price guarantee – we will come up with something to suit each customer’s needs and not go over budget.---Mr L’Helgouach said.

am an amateur runner, always run in the inner city of Beijing, the hazardous air pollution issue is getting harmful to health. All of this series NB Masks came from quite a simple idea, Sneakers are lightweight, durable and breathable. The materials used in the Zante allow our feet to breathe efficiently, so I thought it’s possible to make a mask out of them to protect the respiratory as well. All the masks were made by hand, each mask spent me almost a week. The masks are not going to be for sale by now. They contain not only my idea but also its each significance, quite difficult to set a price. If it’s possible to push to bulk in future, that would be fantastic to share with more people. After the first edition of my Zante Mask, I found the key issue of breathing part, then redesigned the structure of mask, added a pair of Respro valve to solve the problem, make breathing much easier. The masks were well adapted with both Respro Valve and anti PM2.5 filter inside, also could be used to wear out socially and block smog. The Zante Masks were tested by my girlfriend Aria and me at the Color Run 2015 in Beijing, pretty nice effect.

In recent years, the garden-style homes have been sought after by top collectors, according to developer Sunac China Holdings Limited. Call it “Utopia” or the “One Billion Yuan Luxury Home”.

Luxury Home in China
A newly built garden home in Suzhou, China, has just hit the market with an asking price of 1 billion Chinese yuan, an equivalent of $154 million, setting a price record in China. “It is so far the highest luxury listing we have in China,” Jim Hao, vice chairman of Beijing Sotheby’s International Realty, which handles the marketing of the property, told Mansion Global exclusively. A search of news reports shows that it is the most expensive home in mainland China to ever hit the market. Other luxury homes that came remotely close were previously listed or sold for half the price (not counting a Hong Kong estate that was sold in recent weeks for about $270 million).

Location Chalong, located on the east-central side of Phuket, is a colourful combination of a port, residential area and shopping hub. Here, you will find the spiritual centre of the island with the striking hilltop Big Buddha and the beautifully ornate Wat Chalong. Chalong Bay is also a departure point for the many surrounding islands such as Coral Island with its sensational diving and snorkeling opportunities.
In the minds of many, Chalong Bay is rigidly associated with water sports and all things nautical. True, many people depart from Chalong Pier to visit beautiful Phang Nga Bay or to do some island hopping as well as diving and snorkeling. But in fact the area has lots of interesting land-based things to do, from exotic bird shows to golf, not to mention sports like go-karting, wall climbing as well as shooting and paintball. These latter sports take place inside a single venue called the Phuket Shooting Range. With the development of the range over the years, Chalong has made its name as a leading destination for challenging and exciting games and activities.

hould you visit a Thai home and take a present for your host, you may find it is put on the side and left unopened. Don’t be offended by this, though. It’s actually considered rude to rip the present open there and then in front of the giver. A Thai person is more likely to wait until you have left to open the gift. This is part of the “grengjai” custom (in consideration of).

Guy de Maupassant “Again I waited - oh, but for a brief interval: I presently distinguished an extraordinary shuffling and stamping of feet on the staircase, on the floors, on the carpets; a sound not only of boots and’ human shoes, but tapping of crutches, of crutches of wood, and knocking of iron crutches which clanged like cymbals. And behold, I perceived, all at once, on the door sill, an armchair, my large reading chair, which came waddling out. Right into the garden it went, followed by others, the chairs of my drawing room, then the comfortable settee, crawling like crocodiles on their short legs; next, all my chairs bounding like goats, and the small footstools which followed like rabbits. Oh, what a hideous surprise! I stepped back behind the shrubs, where I stayed, crouched and watching this procession of my furniture; for out they all came, one behind the other, quickly or slowly according to their form and weight. My piano - my large grand piano - passed at a canter like a horse, with a faint murmur of music from within; the smallest objects crawled on the gravel like ants - brushes, glasses and cups glistening in the rays of the moon with phosphorescence like glowworms. The curtains, tablecloths and, draperies wriggled along, with their feelers in the puddles like the cuttle-fish in the sea. Suddenly I beheld my pet bureau, a rare specimen of the last century, and which contained all my correspondence, all my love letters, the whole history of my heart, an old history of how much I have suffered! It’s worth wandering around Phuket Town to absorb the culture and see the interesting combination of colonial and Chinese architecture. Before Phuket became an established tourist destination, the island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and a place where Indian, Arab, Malay, Chinese and Portuguese traders would exchange goods for tin and rubber. This wealth led to the construction of many Sino-Portuguese mansions, which you can still see today. As the largest town in the province, Phuket Town also has a good selection of restaurants and cafes, in addition to some of the island’s best shopping. So some people, the main reason for visiting Phuket is to take a ferry or boat trip over to the beautiful Phi Phi Islands and experience their stunning natural beauty. With white sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, sheer cliffs and interesting rock formations, the Phi Phi Islands are a laid-back, exotic paradise. k

CIT Y OF ANGELS It’s the contradictions that give the City of Angels its rich, multifaceted personality. Here, climate-controlled megamalls sit side-by-side with 200-year-old village homes; gold-spired Buddhist temples share space with neon-lit strips of sleaze; slow-moving traffic is bypassed by long-tail boats plying the royal river; and streets lined with food carts are overlooked by restaurants on top of skyscrapers. And as Bangkok races towards the future, these contrasts will never stop supplying the city with its unique and ever-changing strain of Thai-ness. Until you’ve eaten on a Bangkok street, your noodles mingling with your sweat amid a cloud of exhaust fumes, you haven’t actually eaten Thai food. It can be an intense mix: the basic flavours – spicy, sour, sweet and salty – aren’t exactly meat and potatoes. But for adventurous foodies who don’t need no be white tablecloths, there’s probably t

SING SING THEATER
Sing Sing Theater is a fantastical bar-cum-club with the most creative interior design concept in Bangkok. Paying homage to far Eastern aesthetics, you can expect intricate wrought iron patterns, hundreds of lanterns hanging from the ceiling and plenty of dragon imagery to go with the ‘Muses’ (elegant girls dressed in Chinese Qipao). There is a big push into concept parties at Sing Sing too, with themes like Underwater or Carnival being completely immersive experiences and a whole lot of fun. Sing Sing Theater was developed by a partnership including Oskar Bistro and Quince Restaurant, but it reminds us a lot of Maggie Choo’s over in Silom. It comes as no surprise that it is the same designer and art director behind both venues, and, in particular, the work of Ashley Sutton as the designer strikes a chord as his concepts have been a hit all over town. This – his most ambitious work – has established Sing Sing as one of the hottest clubs in Bangkok.

OSKAR BISTRO Oskar Bistro is a restaurant with a slightly clubby vibe. It certainly packs a lot of things under one roof: a hearty menu, a long list of cheap drinks and a live DJ spinning music that makes eating dinner feel like you’re swaying slowly on a dance floor. The vibe here is of a pub where you can actually bring your girlfriend on a date, with fuss-free decor and whitewashed walls. Our favorite part is the prominent bar in the middle of the room with its very bling’d-out Oskar sign that look likes it used to belong on the side of one of J-Lo’s handbags. There’s also a charming porch outdoors with lots of tables for two. Inside is a combination of proper sit down tables, by the DJ station, and some high tables by the bar.

YAOWARAJ Chinatown in Bangkok
Bangkok’s Chinatown is an enthralling place, one of the most authentic and unchanged spots in the city, and one of the most enjoyable and only spots left for walking. There are so many tiny lanes and narrow alleyways which are ripe for exploration. Start your visit here off with a stop at the informative Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Centre, followed up by checking out the impressive golden Buddha statue in Wat Traimit. From here, you can make your way down Yaowarat Road, exploring the vibrant markets in Trok Issaranuphap and Sampeng Lane before breaking for coffee at the atmospheric Eiah Sae. Other highlights here include the extremely colorful shrine of Guan Yin, the pilgrim filled Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, Bangkok’s most important Chinese temple, and the beautiful Pak Klong Talad Flower Market, which sits just off the edge of Chinatown back out on the Chao Phraya River. Don’t be in any hurry to leave Chinatown though. It gets even better on Yaowarat Road at night, with hundreds of delectable food stalls and restaurants opening up and an electric atmosphere filling the air. If you come here during holiday times, you may be lucky enough to see a Chinese opera, a dying tradition but one well worth making time for.

The Red Cross Fair takes place twice a year to raise funds for the Thai Red Cross society. It is a combination of a temple fair and open-air market, with a multitude of merchandise from private, government and nongovernment organisations as well as carnival games and food stalls. Phuket has many festivals each year and one of the most cherished newer celebrations is the Phuket Old Town Festival that follows Chinese New Year. Phuket’s Old Town Festival is held in the historical centre of the Old Town along Thalang, Krabi, and Phuket Roads and during the festival, roads around the Old Town, including Thalang, Krabi, Dibuk, Phang Nga, Thepkrassatri and Phuket, are turned into walking streets.

Chinese New Year brings one of the most exhilarating celebrations to Yaowaraj, which is officially the Chinatown of Bangkok. The entire length of street comes to life with crowds of worshippers, exploding firecrackers, dragon dancers, and families of Chinese descent who gather to partake in the street fanfare as well as enjoy sumptuous Chinese banquets.

What To Do
Having fun is a big part of Thai culture, and having fun amidst scorching heat is no exception. The hottest month of the year, April sees the entire country go bananas in friendly water fights and street parties that last nearly a week. During Songkran, most office buildings, shut down completely, while big shopping malls usually remain open. Bangkok 13rd - 15th April 2017 Phuket 13rd - 15th April 2017

Originating in China, where the legend of revolutionary heroes on a full moon night was born, the Moon Festival takes on a new meaning here in Bangkok. Stripped of its cultural significance, besides the fact that it’s a delicacy from China, the festival is an exciting time to waltz into a gourmet market or bakery and feel the spirit of the Moon Festival through a colourful shelf display. Special food, flowers and candles are offered to ancestors on altars. Other offerings are made to ‘feed the ghosts without relatives’ that are said to have been released from hell for the month.

The Gay Festival nowadays attracts revelers from the world over and is a week of fun and wellorganised activities, parties, competitions, quizzes, parades and over-the-top costumes and characters. Based from Soi Paradise and gay-friendly hotels, the festival certainly leaves its mark on Patong Beach.

Every year in November, for nine days and nine nights, there is a temple fair which is probably one of the oldest fairs in Bangkok. Like our own temple fair here in Samut Prakan, a sacred red cloth is paraded around the base of the mount before being taken to the top. It is then wrapped around the chedi. If you look closely, you can see people have written messages on the red cloth. Bangkok November 2017 At Wat Saket

NEXTi s s u e Architecture Although most of the buildings were created or remodeled during the French Renaissance, their architectural features where inspired by the Middle Ages. They introduced a new art of living, with symmetrical facades, stairs to the complex structure and especially a distribution of very neat apartments. We find this style in Blois, Azay-leRideau and Chambord example.
Design The French might be the world’s most stylish denizens. From their perfectly tied scarves to their impeccably delicate desserts, it’s as if les français gave sophistication its name.
Art & Culture Located right by the famous ChampsElysées boulevard of the 8th district in Paris, the Grand Palais large historic site, exhibition hall and museum complex of 72,000m2 hosts over 40 events a year.

Technology The E-Fan “Plus” demonstrator takes off and lands on electrical power, drastically reducing the noise level at low altitudes. The aircraft now incorporates a thermal (internal combustion) engine as a flight range extender, which generates enough electricity to sustain level flight at maximum cruise speed and simultaneously charge the onboard array of lithium-ion batteries.
Lifestyle No, the French did not invent music. But in 1982, the French ministry of culture officially dedicated a day to music, where the French are invited to go out, listen and play music, dance for a whole night. The “Fête de la musique » happens every year, symbolically on the very first night of summer.
France France, in Western Europe, encompasses medieval cities, alpine villages and Mediterranean beaches. Paris, its capital, is famed for its fashion houses, classical art museums including the Louvre and monuments like the Eiffel Tower.
