BRITISH v intage 60’s Fashion Britain were the leading force in fashion during the 1960s. In this decade the London Modernists, known as the Mods, were shaping and defining popular fashion for young British men, whilst icons such as Twiggy were revolutionising fashion and the modelling industry with her thick eyelashes and pixie crop hair.
The British Mini
Telephone Box
The best-selling British car in history. In August 1959 Sir Alec Issigonis launched the Morris Mini Minor, which would eventually become the internationally recognised Mini we are familiar with today. Though throughout the years, the designs have varied, the small car has retained its identity as a British Icon.
One of Britain’s favourite designed icons since 1900. The red telephone box was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. In 1924, Scott designed the K2 phone box, however due to its expensive materials, in 1935 the K6 was created as a replacement, keeping the classic style which has been loved by many.

London Buses Big red double-decker buses are icons of London. They are recognised all over the world. London General Omnibus Company, who became the biggest bus operator in the capital, painted all their buses red to stand out from competition. Before 1907, buses were painted different colours to signify their route.

etween 1966 and 2000, London’s skyline was almost non-existent with only around 20 skyscrapers decorating the top of the city. Since the turn of the millennium, this number has nearly tripled, with around 40 buildings having been erected since 2002 until now. Three of the most notable skyscrapers to have been built in this time include 20 Fenchurch, The Gherkin, and The Shard. These modern buildings have helped London begin to become more recognised within the modern architectural world, in where they had previously been trailing from.

The Gherkin, built in 2004, was arguably the starting point for modern London architecture. It set a benchmark in architectural quality for the next generation of tall buildings
and helped define a modern, open, and progressive image for the rest to follow and live up to. Uruguayan architect, Rafael Viñoly certainly stepped up to this challenge when he designed the 20 Fenchurch (Walkie Talkie) skyscraper. Upon completion in 2014, the building changed the idea that buildings have to be smaller on top. The accolade of tallest skyscraper In London belongs to The Shard, located near London Bridge. It has become an international symbol for London and has redefined their skyline. Its impressive design uses shards of glass to blend in with the sky. However, with end of the financial crisis and a rise in demand for real estate in the capital, the skyline is set for a dramatic change. Architecture | HISTORY
History of British Architecture A rchitecture is about evolution, not revolution. It used to be thought that once the Romans pulled out of Britain in the fifth century, their elegant villas, carefully-planned towns and engineering marvels like Hadrian’s Wall simply fell into decay as British culture was plunged into the Dark Ages. It took the Norman Conquest of 1066 to bring back the light, and the Gothic cathedral-builders of the Middle Ages played an important part in the revival of British culture.
The great cathedrals and parish churches that lifted up their towers to heaven were acts of devotion in stone. However, the truth is not as simple as that. Romano-British culture - and that included architecture along with language, religion, political organisation and the arts - survived long after the Roman withdrawal. And although the Anglo-Saxons had
18 | LOFT-LIVING.COM
a sophisticated building style of their own, little survives to bear witness to their achievements as the vast majority of Anglo-Saxon buildings were made of wood.
Towers to Heaven Even so, the period between the Norman landing at Pevensey in 1066 and the day in 1485 when Richard III lost his horse and his head at Bosworth, ushering in the Tudors and the Early Modern period, marks a rare flowering of British building. And it is all the more remarkable because the underlying ethos of medieval architecture was ‘fitness for purpose’. The great cathedrals and parish churches that lifted up their towers to heaven were not only acts of devotion in stone; they were also fiercely functional buildings.
Castles served their particular purpose and their battlements and turrets were for use rather than ornament. The rambling manor houses of the later Middle Ages, however, were primarily homes, their owners achieving respect and maintaining status by their hospitality and good lordship rather than the grandeur of their buildings. Fitness for purpose also characterized the homes of the poorer classes. Such people didn’t matter very much to the ruling elite and so neither did their houses. These were dark, primitive structures of one or two rooms, usually with crude timber frames, low walls and thatched roofs. They weren’t built to last. And they didn’t.

EDITORS PICK England is well known for its presence in the street art community. Many of this has been created and exhibited through the streets of one of Londons most trendy areas to be, Brick Lane. It has become a go to place for street artists to showcase their work and also enjoy everything else the East London street has to offer.

hen discussing Art & Culture in England, East London’s Brick Lane will always be high on the topic list. Located in Shoreditch, street artists from all over the world travel to Brick Lane to create and exhibit their work, knowing they will have an appreciative audience. Notable works include the ‘Octo Ele’ by Alexis Diaz (La Pandilla), found on Hanbury Street.

An exciting aspect about the street art in Brick Lane is that it is constantly changing. Pieces are often painted over so that new works can be displayed by other artists which means you will more than likely be able to experience completely different artworks, each time you visit Brick Lane. This refreshing surge in street art is a large part of what has made Brick Lane a ‘go-to’ place in London.
Another aspect of Brick Lane which attracts a large amount of people is the Brick Lane Market. Here you can find almost anything from cheap retro clothing to Art Deco furniture. Though the shops and restaurants are open every day, the best day to visit is Sunday as the streets are filled with people selling their second-hand wares. There are also often street performers which will offer an extra vibrant experience to your visit. To finish off in Brick Lane, you can visit one of the many famous curry houses. With a large Bangladeshi community, Brick Lane is thriving with delicious Bangladeshi restaurants that offer great food at very reasonable prices. On the other hand, if you’re not a fan of curry, or fancy something a bit lighter, then you can also get authentic Jewish bagels from ‘Beigel Bake’ which is a

Greatly influenced by the work of post-war European painters such as Matta and Gorky who explored the evocative language of color, Brown has a fascination with the exploration of the subconscious and the subliminal. Her work seeks to make such concepts visible, to make them real on the canvas. In her current Charlotte studio, Brown paints in an abstract and painterly manner, using color as a motivating force. At times bold, at times subtle, Brown composes her non-representational work by juxtaposing fields of color, shapes and textures. Brown allows the natural properties of oil painting to build slowly in layers of oil glazes and transparencies. Keeping the chroma as fresh and pure as possible, Brown lets chance permeate the work as she seeks a balance between order and serendipity. By reworking and layering, sometimes wet-on-wet, Brown creates a final painterly surface that often features a field of subtle variations, animated by calligraphic marks. As a writer, Brown has written art criticism for local, regional and national art magazines for many years, and has co-authored Design First: Designbased Urban Planning for Communities, with her husband, architect David Walters, (published in 2004 by The Architectural Press in Oxford, England.)

ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS
05
TECHNIQUES I Art & Culture Dry brush When paint is applied to canvas or work surface using a dry brush and paint undiluted by water, you’ll create a strong current of color on the page. Your lines will be uneven, as they won’t have water to soften the edges, but this can be a purposeful painterly effect. Dry brush application lends texture and movement to lines.
Color mixing techniques Mixing acrylic colors is fairly simple: Combine colors and mix using a palette knife. But once you’ve mastered color mixing, you can explore some more creative methods.
Partially mix colors before painting Instead of fully mixing the two colors, just give them a brief mix with your palette knife. Then, use the partially mixed colors to paint. You’ll get a fascinating mingling of colors as you apply the paint to your work surface.
Create a family of colors Creating a family of colors or tones to work with in a painting can help you create subtle variances in your painting. Whether it’s slight varieties of skin tones or varying shades of pink, having a family of tones pre-mixed before you paint can really help streamline the process.
You can treat acrylic somewhat like watercolor when you dilute the paint with enough water. You can use the watered down paint to apply translucent washes on your surface. However, unlike watercolor, the acrylic paint will set permanently. Mixing wash and dry brush methods can be very effective in creating a variety of textures in a single piece.
Palette knife Applying paint with a palette knife is an instant way to make your painting “artsy”. Simply use the palette knife to scrape up a bit of paint and apply it to your work surface. Pretend that you’re artfully spreading buttercream on a cake or even butter on bread.

Timothy Oulton is a luxury British furniture brand, named so after it’s founder. Their story begins back in 1976 with a small antiques shop owned by Tim’s father, to now having as many as 37 retail galleries worldwide.
The materials used at Timothy Oulton are one of the most interesting aspects behind the brand. With leathers being sourced from South America in Brazil and Argentina, where the cattle run free on the Pampas, the finished products are highly resilient against scratches and abrasions. Other materials, can often have already experienced a lifetime of use already, such as wood rescued from abandoned fishing boats that is then reclaimed and reformed to create mesmerising furniture. The result of this is not only does the customer get a piece of high quality furniture, but also a piece with a story behind it.
Influenced by his love of antiques, his father’s military background, and an affection for British heritage, Oulton creates handcrafted furniture using traditional techniques, simple tools and pure, natural materials.
Designing furniture, lighting and home accessories, Timothy Oulton’s signature pieces really show off all the aspects we have previously discussed. The ‘Westminster Union Jack Sofa’ demonstrates both the traditional

Design I HISTORY
A Short History of Furniture Periods
Age of Oak
Furniture made during the reigns of the British Tudor monarchs (Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, et al.) is commonly referred to as belonging to the Age of Oak, since oak was the predominant species used for most pieces. As with all period styles, there is no clear beginning and end, but over a period of 160 years from around 1500 broad characteristics can be seen. Age of Oak furniture retains much of the previous Gothic period, especially in the amount of carving used to decorate panels and framing members, although the use of pierced carving was less popular. In general these are massive, sturdy pieces, such as huge four-poster beds, long rectangular tables with bulbous turned

legs connected by stout stretchers, benches for general use, and joined (as opposed to turned) chairs made for important people. The totally enclosed, frame-and-panel chair typical of the medieval period slowly gave way to a lighter version with turned or carved legs, but both are known as wainscot chairs, implying either that the oak used was imported from the Baltic or that the construction method was frame-and-paneling similar to the wall paneling of the period. Joined, frame-and-panel chests, in distinction to the solid-board chests of previous centuries, reached their peak in this period, and became the inspiration for various other developments such as settles, dressers, and cupboards. This period is also known as the English Renaissance,
since much of its inspiration came from a renewed interest in classical forms brought to England by craftsmen from Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands at the invitation of Henry VIII. Italian-inspired carving in the form of acanthus leafage, fruit and floral carving, bass-relief figure carving, and armorial motifs was as widespread as the earlier linenfold and parchemin carved panels. The honest, foursquare, if massive quality of this period was in part the inspiration for the Arts and Crafts style that appeared towards the end of the 19th century.
Age of Walnut
The term “Age of Walnut is not so much descriptive of any particular style of furniture as it is a means of dating
HISTORY I Design furniture -- roughly from 1600 to 1730. One reason for the gradual introduction of walnut may have been improvements in sawing. While planks could only with difficulty be sawn thinner than an inch, it was natural to construct furniture using them as such, and to employ carving as the easiest form of decoration. But as people learned to cut thinner slices of material, it became possible to use such thin slices -- especially when of wood remarkable for its contrasting color or unusual figure -- as an alternative form of decoration. In fact, it was the gradual increase of this new technique (using walnut inlaid or veneered upon oak) that accounted in large for the decrease of carved surfaces as the chief characteristic of fancy furniture.
Age of Oak furniture retains much of the previous Gothic period, especially in the amount of carving used to decorate panels and framing members.
The Age of Walnut gradually gave way to a period in which mahogany was the predominant species used. The Age of Mahogany dominated much of the middle part of the 18th century. The beginning of this period saw a sudden simplification of style into a less ornamented and more severely elegant esthetic. Emphasis was henceforth on simple, flowing lines. Later examples became more heavily carved, fretted, and typically replete with what is perhaps the most characteristic element of this whole period: the cabriole leg. This was at first plain and finished with a simple turned pad foot, and later developed into a much carved element, complete with ball-and-claw, hairy paw, or lion’s feet. The latter part of the century is sometimes referred to as the Age of Satinwood, although mahogany continued to be very popular. It was dominated by a less curvilinear, more severe, classically inspired style introduced by the architects known as the “Adelphi” the trademark adopted by the four Adams brothers.

cottages to stay in. In Shropshire, the ‘quiet corner of England’ visitor’s can stay in traditional thatched homes, such as Yeoman’s Cottage, which lies in the heart of the Shropshire hills. If you choose to visit Devon, you will be visiting what is often used to illustrate ‘typical’ English countryside with small valleys, traditional mixed farming and villages of thatched cottages. For a more historical trip, Norfolk offers an abundance of castles and medieval churches and gives a sense of rural community through performances of ancient traditions. The most famous area in the English countryside, however, is the Lake District in Cumbria. This area of low mountains and lakes is a popular destination with poets, artists, hikers

With the development of the range over the years, Chalong has made its name as a leading destination for challenging and exciting games and activities.

PH UK ET If Harry Belafonte would have known Phuket at the time he composed his “Island in the Sun”, he definitely would have dedicated this song to beautiful Phuket and its overwhelming friendly and beautiful inhabitants who call their island “our beloved pearl in the Andaman Sea”. Phuket nestles in balmy Andaman Sea waters on Thailand’s Indian Ocean coastline 862 kilometres south of Bangkok. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoyed a rich and colourful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign trader’s ship logs. Countries like France, England, Portugal or China actively traded with the islanders.
MY DREAM
The townscape of Phuket Town is marked till these days from buildings in the sino-portuguese style. Today Phuket possesses one of the worlds most developed tourist infrastructures: World class Hotels for every taste, spa and wellness oasis’ which spoil their guests from head to foot with the most sophisticated massages in the world, and many restaurants with culinary lusciousness, providing the best of what the Thai and international kitchens are able to offer. For the active vacationers, activities reach from horse riding, to kayaking, jet skiing and bungee jumping as well as snorkelling , diving or sailing and an outstanding amount of the world’s first class golfing courses. Luxurious, modern shopping malls in Phuket Town or Patong Beach, provide many small shops of all kinds and numerous colourful exotic markets, make Phuket a shopping paradise for everyone. Try it once and you will always come back.

King’s Cup Regatta The Colour Run Thailand
The Chao Le Boat Floating Festival is bi-annual event that falls during the middle of the 6th and 11th lunar months. Ceremonies are held by the sea gypsies of Phuket with them taking place in three locations. The ritual includes small boats being set adrift to drive away evil and bring good luck and prosperity - a beautiful spectacle at night.
Loy Krathong
This Chinese festival originated several hundreds of years ago when some Chinese opera group performers fell ill with malaria. The idea of the nine-day event which starts on the first day of the lunar month and runs, is to abstain from meat and other acts in order to obtain good health and purify the mind and body and honour the Nine Emperor Gods.
Loi Ruea Chao Le (Sea Gypsy Boat Floating)
Phuket Vegetarian Festival
What To Do
One of the most beautiful festivals in Thailand, Loy Krathong sees people floating ornately decorated sections of banana tree trunk that contain flowers, incense sticks and a candle. The concept of Loy Krathong is to worship the Goddess of Water and to float away ones troubles and bad luck. It is traditionally performed on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls in November.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is Asia’s largest sailing event. Approximately 100 boats and 1,000 sailors are expected to take part, enjoying five spectacular days of tropical racing and six nights of beachside parties.

This spectacular event is held a few days prior to HM the King’s birthday anniversary on 5 December. Members of the three armed forces – the Royal Thai Army, the Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Thai Air Force – together with the royal guards, declare the oath of allegiance and march in unison before HM the King and Queen and members of the Royal Family. New Year’s Countdown
The Chao Praya River will play host to the Royal Barge Procession, an ancient tradition revived by current King Bhumibol Adulyadej. A very unusual site, these barges have only made an appearance 16 times in the last 65 years. 52 boats are taking part in celebration of the King’s 85th Birthday this year, and the event will start at 15:00 from near the Rama VIII Bridge, ending at Wat Arun at 16:00.
