Square Foot Gardening 2024

Because we wanted to accurately track our vegetable and herb harvests, we weighed each batch after harvesting. The amounts were recorded in a black notebook. On the left page, you can see an example of this.

The records included: – the date – the weight in grams – the harvested product – the Square Foot –– gardening box it came from

The next step was to create datasheets summarizing the entire harvest for the year.

These datasheets were then imported using a programming language called Processing. With this language, we designed the graphics and generated the final charts for this brochure.

In 2023, we focused on growing different varieties of lettuce and herbs. Our vegetable selection mainly consisted of chard, pak choy, and various types of beans and peas. We wanted to diversify our crops so we could incorporate more homegrown vegetables into our daily meals. This plan worked out well, as our yield significantly increased. In 2023, we harvested approximately 27 kilos, but in 2024, this grew to almost 45 kilos—a big step forward. Of course, we also expanded our growing area by using more bins, especially now that the greenhouse is in place.

This year, we introduced new crops, including yellow and red bell peppers, red chili peppers, baby squash, zucchini, cucumbers, San Marzano tomatoes, and spring onions. In March, we pre-sowed a large number of tomatoes, and we ended up transplanting them into pots and Mini’s later in the season.

Every year brings new challenges, and 2024 was no exception. Due to personal circumstances, we were less focused on maintaining continuity in the planting boxes. This is clearly reflected in the monthly yields, as some squares remained empty for a while, waiting to be re-seeded. Now that things have settled down, we are determined to make 2025 a top-growing year.
