A Campaign to Elevate Experiential Learning
“ Logan University provides a strong education rooted in science, research and evidence, and its graduates are solid and balanced in their practice. I’ve dedicated my career to innovation so that we, as chiropractors, can help patients improve their health, and it’s an honor to give back to the university that has given me so much.”
— Arlan W. Fuhr, DC (’61), Founder and Chairman of Activator Methods International
“ Any chiropractor wants what’s best for their patients,
Dr. and Mrs. Fuhr, Advancing Education, Transforming Lives Campaign Chairs
and I think Logan has always been good at inspiring its students and alumni to further the profession and, in doing so, provide the best care to patients. In supporting the campaign to renovate Logan’s facilities, we hope to help motivate and teach the future generation of chiropractic so that someday someone will come up with a new tool or technique that transforms patient care, as Arlan did with the Activator Method.”
— Judi Fuhr, CEO of Activator Methods International
Hands-on, applied learning has always been a hallmark of the Logan experience. Since Dr. Hugh B. Logan’s first class of seven students in 1935, the university’s curriculum has incorporated real-world, patient-centered practice into daily instruction.
Today’s students learn the long-standing traditions of chiropractic technique while also preparing to work in an integrated and ever-evolving health care environment. Faculty encourage students to think differently, ask hard questions, discuss real-world application of theory, and challenge norms. This experiential learning enables Logan graduates to enter the field as confident clinicians that are flexible, innovative, and able to work successfully in diverse settings. The tradition founded by Dr. Logan is an ongoing commitment that resonates across the university’s campus even today. Faculty, staff, and administrators of Logan work hard to meet the needs of the modern student, integrating technology in the classroom and providing experiences using state-ofthe-art equipment, current research, and contemporary techniques. As the chiropractic and health science fields continue to evolve, Logan, too, must continue to innovate to provide students with the best instruction available. Logan University’s Advancing Education, Transforming Lives campaign is an investment in the institution’s continuing commitment to experiential learning through the renovation and addition of the newly
named Fuhr Science Center and renovation of classrooms and offices in the Logan Administration Building. The Science Center was constructed in 1986 and the Administration Center was part of the original Maryknoll seminary purchased by Logan in 1972. Logan has adapted these buildings to provide up-to-date instruction, but the facilities are dated, technology is added on, and equipment is nearing the end of its useful life. Increasing student enrollment has led to overcrowding in labs, technique classes, and faculty offices. Currently, class sizes and electives are limited by space constraints. Integrated systems are needed that can adapt and grow with new technological advances, maintain state-of the-art education, provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities, and accommodate future needs. Renovation and expansion are imperative to upholding Logan’s stellar reputation in chiropractic and health science education. Guided by our missions and vision, this endeavor will increase Logan’s capacity for hands-on learning by more than doubling the university’s anatomy lab space, creating new workspaces for hands-on simulated learning, expanding available areas for student collaboration, and updating technique classrooms.
TECHNIQUE CLASSROOMS The new construction and expansion of the Fuhr Science Center will accommodate Logan’s growing enrollment and provide students with stellar facilities to learn, engage and thrive. The renovation will include the creation of six new state-of-the-art chiropractic technique classrooms and two clinical methods classrooms. This reinforces the foundation we have built for students to master the skills needed to become a successful chiropractor. Each classroom is designed to empower students as they master anatomical and physiological principles, finetune adjusting techniques and perfect doctor-patient interaction under the guidance of experienced, licensed instructors.
ANATOMY LABS An understanding of human clinical anatomy is an important element of chiropractic and health science education. Through the dissection of human cadavers, students discover the inner workings of the body and identify anatomical structures. The new construction and renovation of the Fuhr Science Center will include the addition of two state-of-the art anatomy labs and associated lecture amphitheaters. These two active learning spaces will accommodate 194 students and expand opportunities for physiological learning. The new lab space will include additional areas for specimen preparation and storage, and updated technology within each lab will also improve the learning experience.
STUDENT COLLABORATION AREA A 2019 campus space utilization study identified a growing need for student collaboration and study space. The Advancing Education, Transforming Lives campaign will add significant community space to the campus footprint, providing greater opportunities for students to work together.
ANATOMY LAB AMPHITHEATER Each anatomy lab will have an associated amphitheater, available for dissection lecture, specimen examination, and prosection. Tiered seating provides for easier observation of technique. Updated technology allows classes to view faculty dissection technique in real time and improves access to view x-ray and other images.
SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN The resources needed to respond to the fastchanging landscape of education and the cost to continuously provide the most up-to-date technology can be limiting for any university. The total cost of the planned renovation and new construction is approximately $28 million. Recognizing the importance of affordability, and the need to control tuition growth to a sustainable level, the university’s Board of Trustees has committed to funding this project through three efforts: financing through an existing long-term relationship with the university’s banking partner, a strategic spend in cash reserves, and a fundraising campaign. By supporting the Advancing Education, Transforming Lives campaign, our community has the potential to be the vital component in the ongoing success of Logan graduates. Logan has provided the foundation for these future leaders to develop, but it will take the collective support of the entire community to ensure the opportunity exists.
Your impact goes beyond simply encouraging current Logan students. Your support makes a significant difference to the thousands of future patients our alumni and students will treat. Patients deserve to be managed by the most skilled practitioners using up-to-date and effective techniques. As chiropractic care is a constantly changing environment, the support of our alumni and friends provides a much-needed resource to help keep Logan’s curriculum, facilities and equipment current.
