Academic Dress, Hoods & Guest Hooders The caps, gowns and hoods worn by the faculty and students at formal convocations are today’s formal dress of the worldwide academic community. While now worn only at formal convocations, such dress was originally the normal garb of academics as they went about their daily business. It originated in Europe more than a thousand years ago; like universities and colleges themselves, it developed within the church, and all academics were once at least in minor orders within the church. The robes and hoods are stylized versions of those monastic robes. The style of the robe indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer—bachelor sleeves are pointed and the robe is plain. Master’s robe sleeves are oblong, while the doctoral robe sleeves are gathered at the wrist, and the robe itself has velvet bands. Another badge of the doctoral degree is a gold tassel worn on the cap. Master, doctorate and professional doctorate graduates participate in a hooding ceremony during graduation. The hoods indicate the degree level, the academic area of degree and the school which granted it. The size of the hood indicates the degree level, the outer band of the hood indicates, by color, the degree discipline, the bright, silken interior of the hood, by its color and design, indicates its source. Each university and college has a distinctive hood. During the hooding process, a sash-like garment of Logan University’s blue and white colors, and the color representing the discipline of the degree being granted is placed around the neck of the graduate.

4

Hooding takes place by the President, Provost and/or the Dean of the College. The garment is then arranged so that it flows down the back of the graduate, revealing the colors of the school and discipline. For graduates with more than one degree, only one hood is worn at any given time. Doctorate and professional doctorate students are allowed to invite a guest hooder to hood them during the graduation ceremony, provided the guest hooder meets a specific set of guidelines. The colors of the hoods worn by faculty and administration indicate the major field of study: Arts, Letters, Humanities: White Business: Drab Chiropractic: Grey Communication: Crimson Dentistry: Lilac Education: Light Blue Engineering: Orange Library Science: Lemon Medicine: Hunter Green Pharmacy: Olive Philosophy: Dark Blue Physical Education: Sage Green Science: Gold Theology: Scarlet Graduates wearing white cords are considered Logan Legacies, an individual who matriculated into their program of study after an immediate family member graduated from Logan. Graduates wearing blue cords have achieved academic honors. The cords are given in recognition of exceptional academic performance in the graduates’ degree program. Graduates wearing a medal have achieved the highest overall grade point average in their degree program and wear the medal in recognition of their academic excellence.
