Dear Alumni, Colleagues and Friends: Symposium are in motion (see page 17) and we look forward to surpassing the 2014 attendance.
Logan became a founding member of the St. Louis Health Care Baldrige Community of Excellence, the first local chapter of the state’s Excellence in Missouri Foundation. As we challenge ourselves to becoming a leader in healthcare education and commit to continuous improvement and long-term strategic planning, this is an important step for us and our profession.
It’s been another rewarding year of accomplishment and excellence for Logan University.
I am proud to report our continued success in areas of academics, clinical immersion and integration, as we explore new opportunities and pathways that reflect our mission.
We held the inaugural Spring Symposium wherein more than 500 individuals attended. Our speakers—ranging from Doctors of Chiropractic to Medical Doctors, including a neurosurgeon—presented information and research findings on topics such as spinal biomechanics, X-Ray and diagnostic imaging, nutrition and wellness. Plans for the 2015 Spring
Finally, I continue to be amazed by the bright minds that enter our institution—those who are driven to provide a patient-centered, outcome-based care, and of course, our generous alumni and friends, who continue to make our mission possible. Your support improves the quality of life of patients that graduates, and our future graduates, serve.
Heading into our 80th year as an institution of higher learning, I look forward to continuing proud traditions and a legacy of excellence that our institution was founded on. Dr. Clay McDonald President
2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
One of the more exciting changes we implemented was the revision of our chiropractic curriculum. Students in their first trimester now have the opportunity to receive hands-on clinical experience through faculty-guided scenarios. This approach allows students to apply skills learned in the classroom immediately, offering more exposure to actual patient care throughout the student’s academic career.
Two members of our esteemed faculty—Michael Wittmer, DC and Daniel Haun, DC, DACBR—were honored with the Award for Excellence in Teaching, sponsored by the Emerson Corporation. This prestigious accolade recognizes St. Louis educators who demonstrate excellence and dedication in their respective fields. Additionally, our employees helped Logan earn the honor of “Great College to Work For” by ranking us highly in the areas of facilities, workplace and security in a Chronicle of Higher Education survey.

SECURING Chiropractic’s Future:
The Wolf Family

He remembers it like it was yesterday; driving up the long, winding road to Logan’s campus for the first time as a student. “
remember estimating I would make this drive nearly 1,000 more times before graduation, and I remember wondering how I was going to be transformed into a Doctor of Chiropractic in just three and a half years.”
I
For Anthony Wolf, DC, FICC, chiropractic has been more than a career—it’s been a calling to help ensure the success of Logan, its future graduates and the profession as a whole.
“There has never been a better time to be a Doctor of Chiropractic than right now,” he said. “I feel blessed to have the opportunity to join the effort to unite our professional organizations with Logan and other
Dr. Wolf said that as consumer demand for chiropractic increases, so does the need for more Doctors of Chiropractic. With 70,000 DCs nationwide, we are treating only 4 percent of the population, he said. He added that if the number of patients using chiropractic increases to 16 percent of the population, our DCs will be maxed out.” The mission is clear: refer more students to chiropractic. And Dr. Wolf has.
Last fall, the Logan alum and fellow December 1985 classmate Paul Phipps, DC, were named ‘top recruiters’ through a nationwide campaign sponsored by the F4CP to increase the number of doctors recommending chiropractic as a career to prospective students.
Dr. Wolf said it was not only a privilege to be recognized, but also an honor to be associated with an institution whose leadership excels in preparing graduates for success in today’s health care system. “The educational process at Logan has a history of producing the highest quality Doctors of Chiropractic who are clinically proficient as primary, portal-ofentry professionals grounded in a solid chiropractic philosophy which is critical to a successful practice,” he said. “I can say that my educational experience at

Seeing their father’s passion for chiropractic firsthand certainly was a factor in their decision to pursue chiropractic; however, Logan’s reputation, they said, speaks for itself.

“Choosing a chiropractic college is primarily based on the philosophy shared by those who teach there and that which they instill in their students,” said Caitlin. “I feel that it is important to embrace advancement while still remaining true to tradition, and I have found that here at Logan.”
Caitlin said she was drawn to Logan because it balanced cutting-edge technology with a focus on the doctor-patient relationship. She also valued its dedication to community service and emphasis in business management. “The adjusting courses are comprehensive and prepare students for making their own decisions on which adjustments to perform and when, and the specialized techniques cover a wide spectrum of different chiropractic techniques which serves to broaden students’ horizon and adjustment options,” she said. “Because every doctor and patient is different, it is important to provide opportunities to learn many techniques.”
Caitlin said that while her own passion for the profession has transformed through the years, the basis of her desire to be a chiropractor has remained constant. “Chiropractic works—it’s as simple as that,” she said. “What an honor it will be to help people achieve their optimum health with nothing besides my knowledge and my hands.” Following in the footsteps of his family, Eric also looks forward to working to improve the overall health of the community through chiropractic care. He recalls a time during high school when he realized he wanted to help people holistically rather than prescribe medication.
“I could see the same relief that I attained from an adjustment in the face of every patient after they received chiropractic care from my father,” he said. “This furthered my drive to become a chiropractor because I want to affect people in such a positive way as well. I always enjoyed explaining what Eric Wolf, Tri-2 Logan student chiropractic is and I developed a fire inside of me to educate the public about this profession.”
“The clinical focus of the curriculum early on is very important to further improve the success of
Following graduation, Eric intends to join his father’s practice and to continue carrying on Dr. Wolf’s legacy of referring students to chiropractic. He said he looks forward to supporting Logan in the future to encourage the growth of chiropractic and to graduate more Doctors of Chiropractic from a university that provides an excellent education. Nearly 30 years after graduating from Logan, Dr. Wolf’s decision to attend Logan is further affirmed as he meets fellow Logan graduates who are successful in their practices and possess a strong clinical education grounded in philosophy.
For Dr. Wolf, that’s incentive to continue serving the chiropractic profession and ensuring success for future Logan graduates.
“I realize that the passion and quality of instruction in philosophy at Logan was critical to my success in practice,” he said. “For me, my core motivation to continue practicing is in the way you can impact a person’s life ... and transform a patient’s doubts and fears into a positive understanding of and confidence in chiropractic.”

INSPIRED to Give Linda Kenny
LOGAN UNIVERSITY
“As I give, I get.” —Mary McLeod Bethune
10
Linda Kenny’s connection to Logan has truly come full circle.
s a little girl, she watched students tend her family’s dairy as they worked their way toward a Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Logan’s Normandy campus. Now, years later, Linda remains a critical link between students and employment as the University’s director of career development.
A
“I guess you could say I’ve known Logan students my whole life,” she said, “and Logan itself is part of who I am.”
When students nearing graduation are looking for the right location to practice, they come to Linda. She provides them with the tools and resources to make a choice, offers assistance on resumes and interviewing tips and helps find a Logan alumnus with whom they can network. “I’m kind of like eHarmony—connecting students to their dream job,” she laughed.
Part of the reason she gives is the inspiration she draws upon from others. She said, “Seeing what others are able to give back is inspiring. Seeing how funds are used for campus improvements, education and the value for students; well, it made me want to be a part of that.”
Linda has graciously made donations to Logan every year for the past 15 years, and she takes pleasure in supporting a profession that gives so much to others. “I believe in the chiropractic profession and the service it provides the patient population,” she said, “so giving back is an important investment—not only for our current and future students, but for health care as a whole.”
Linda expressed how exciting it’s been for her to witness both the growing student enrollment at Logan in the last 15 years and the growing progression of chiropractic as a whole. “To be a part of that— to see chiropractic becoming more accepted and to see aspiring students drawn to this profession— is rewarding in itself; but also, knowing I’m helping contribute to the future of our students is extremely gratifying.”
2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Linda’s deep connection to Logan has made her not only a strong supporter of the institution, but also a loyal and perpetual donor. She said that as her role at Logan has evolved—from assistant to the vice president of administrative affairs to director of career services—so has her generosity.
“I’ve always believed in supporting those who support you, and giving back to Logan is something I’ve done since the day I arrived,” she said. “When I was hired, I gave what I could afford. Over time, my giving has grown.”

A GIFT to Remember
Monique White
LOGAN UNIVERSITY
“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” —Mother Teresa
12
Those who knew Jon Cromer say he had a reputation—a reputation for being honest, funny and kind. ellow classmates at Logan were at a loss when Jon, a Tri-3 student suddenly passed away last May. “At that time, we held a back-to-school barbecue to benefit his family, but we knew we wanted to do something more,” said Monique White, now a Tri-8 student.
F
Last fall, Jon’s classmates organized a committee to determine how they could help.
With the guidance of James Paine, PhD, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Jennifer Reed, MBA, director of marketing and public relations, the class officers landed on the idea of organizing a 2-mile memorial walk/run on the Logan campus.
“In putting together the event, we were blown away by the generosity and efforts of Logan’s staff and faculty who helped set up the course, purchased the t-shirts and helped with the marketing and promotion of the event,” said Monique, adding that Lucky’s Market and Dierbergs grocery stores also provided donations for food and drinks. On Oct. 17, a group of 70 people gathered at Logan to honor Jon, and a total of $1,500 was collected for the student scholarship. The class officers said they could not have been more pleased with turnout and outpouring of support from Logan. “I wasn’t surprised at all that the last people to leave that evening were students from our class,” Monique said. “It’s a blessing to be surrounded by such a kind group; we have a very close class with truly wonderful people.”
2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
“Our goal was to have a fun evening with food, games and music so families could come and enjoy. As we started discussing, we also had another thought,” Monique said. “Even though we had only been together with Jon for a few trimesters, we all knew he would have made a great doctor. We thought, ‘why not create a scholarship in honor of him?’”
The committee sought input from school administration, friends and family as far as how a scholarship would be set up and awarded. The student committee decided that participation fees from the memorial run would be collected to create a scholarship for one deserving Logan student.

ADVANCING Awareness:
Logan students use chiropractic to connect with the community

At Logan, giving back isn’t just part of a mission statement. It’s a way of living, professionally and personally. n 2014, students through Logan’s Human Performance Center provided chiropractic services at nearly 30 St. Louis area events, from football and hockey games to marathons, bike races and track meets.

On-site support came in the form of chiropractic care and injury triage, treating athletes and also serving as a resource on preventative health care. David Parish, DC, MS, CSCS, DACBSP, ICCSP, director of the Human Performance Center, said Logan is, in fact, part of a bigger mission to promote wellness and maximize human performance in the community.
“We are constantly forging new relationships with unique and diverse organizations that allow students to deepen their knowledge of integrated practice,” he said. “Not only do students have the added benefit of collaborating with community leaders, but they learn
Last Fall, Logan interns were invited to provide preand post-race chiropractic care at Missouri Baptist University’s (MBU) Freedom Run for Ronald, a 5K race that benefitted Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Early trimester Logan interns led dynamic warm ups at the starting line while the older trimester students manned a post-race triage station at the race’s finish. Guy Danoff, assistant professor of health and sport sciences at MBU, said Logan was a natural fit for the event. “We were extremely happy with the service Logan interns provided race participants,” said Danhoff. “They were experienced, professional and encouraging, and those treated felt it was an added value to the event.”
Since the Freedom Run, Logan has been invited to MBU’s Golf Tournament benefitting Cardinals Care (the St. Louis Cardinals Community Fund) in April. Dr. Parish said he’s grateful for the ongoing partnership with MBU.
“It’s always a great situation when we can be out in the community providing patient care and education to those not as familiar with the benefits of chiropractic,” he said.

Logan Enhances Alumni Services The team that oversees development, postgraduate and alumni relations—including the Spring Symposium— has recently made changes to better serve alumni and friends of Logan University. Stacey Till, who joined Logan in May 2013 as the director of admissions, was named assistant vice president for admissions and development. In her new role, Stacey will be responsible for the day-to-day management of admissions and development operations, allowing for a more integrated approach between the two areas.
LOGAN UNIVERSITY
“I was drawn to Logan due to the strength of the institution, the quality of the programs offered and the success of graduates—it certainly is a unique university,” says Stacey. “My goal is to continue recruiting students who are interested in a fulfilling career in health sciences, as well as engaging with our alumni who bring so much to the Logan experience.”
16
Prior to joining Logan, Stacey was already ingrained in the chiropractic profession. In addition to being married to a chiropractor, she spent time working at Texas College of Chiropractic and Palmer Chiropractic College in both admissions and development roles. She has participated in annual fund and special giving campaigns, as well as capital campaigns and has served in student recruitment and
university operations. She also served as director of customer service for Activator Methods® where she worked closely with chiropractors nationally.
“My previous experience serves me well in my role as I am aware of the competition and how to position Logan above the other options,” she says. “Many of our students come to Logan after having a great experience with chiropractic as a patient and my goal is to bridge the gap between our alumni who are working chiropractors and the prospective student who is inspired by the career.” For Logan’s 80th anniversary in 2015, Stacey will be working with Harris Connect to bring back a printed alumni directory which will allow alumni to more easily connect with the university and each other.
“The goal of the directory is to offer another tool to link alumni and for us to follow the various paths our

alumni have taken,” Stacey says. “We want to encourage alumni to participate in Logan’s success—whether it’s by being on campus for our Spring Symposium, giving to the university or referring prospective students.”
Ralph Barrale, DC, vice president of chiropractic and alumni relations, said he looks forward to working more closely with Stacey, given her extensive higher education experience and admissions knowledge. “Stacey’s previous experience in development, and the fact that she is well-known among the Logan community as well as the chiropractic community, makes her a great fit,” he said. Rounding out the team working under Dr. Barrale at Logan’s Alumni & Friends House are Barb Cronin and Patty Sierminski. Barb, who has served in Logan’s postgraduate department for 16 years, was promoted to director of the Alumni & Friends House and will continue her role in coordinating postgraduate programs, guest lectures and Alumni House events.
Patty Sierminski was promoted to administrative assistant and will continue processing applications and registering doctors for state board examinations. “I’m looking forward to getting more involved on the development side of operations and I’m thrilled to be working with such a great team,” she said.
Plans for the 2015 Spring Symposium are underway and set for April 30 to May 3. The theme is “Maximizing Human Performance in an Integrated Setting.” Dr. Barrale said last year’s Symposium drew nearly 500 attendees, a number he hopes to exceed this year. “The seminars were well attended, but this year, we’ll have more space for speakers and greater diversity among topics,” he said. The Symposium will feature 24 hours of continuing education as well as chiropractic exhibits, two social events, and State of the University Address and Scholarship Luncheon. Dr. Barrale said the roster of speakers includes internationally known experts in chiropractic and health care, from Louis Sportelli, DC, and Fabrizio Mancini, DC, to well-respected faculty from Logan. Donna Mannello, DC has been selected as the speaker for the inaugural Beatrice Hagan Memorial Presentation. “We’ll be addressing interdisciplinary topics and research from integrated settings among health care professions,” said Dr. Barrale.
To date, Standard Process, Inc., EFI/Loomis Institute, NCMIC Group, Inc., Foot Levelers, Inc. and BIOFREEZE® have pledged sponsorship. Additional sponsorship and vendor opportunities are available, and early bird registration for Symposium attendees is once again being offered at $99. Guests may secure rooms at The Doubletree Hotel in Chesterfield for $89 per night. For more information please visit logan.edu/Symposium or call 800-842-3234.
We need your help! Logan is working with Harris Connect to create a comprehensive alumni directory. Alumni can expect to be contacted by Harris Connect between April and July. Look for additional information on logan.edu/Alumni.
