Annual Report of Giving 2017–2018

The price of leadership is service to others. Every donation to Logan is an investment in the future of our profession and health of our community.

Dear Alumni, Friends and Supporters, When you show your support to Logan, we understand it’s not just an investment. It’s a commitment of your loyalty, confidence and trust in our leadership and where we can take that. For that choice you make, we thank you. We are eternally grateful for that support. This year alone, your commitment strengthened our purpose and opened the doors to possibility. You helped secure record enrollment in our College of Chiropractic and College of Health Sciences degree programs. With that, we deepened the breadth of our curriculum, ensuring our students are not only practiceready—they are skilled and confident health care leaders.

President's Cabinet Clay McDonald, DC, MBA, JD President Ralph Barrale, DC Vice President of Chiropractic and Alumni Relations Theresa Fleck, MA, CFRE Vice President of Institutional Advancement Brad Hough, PhD Vice President of Information Technology and Strategic Performance Adil Khan, MBA, CPA, CSBO Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Administrative Services Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly, DHEd, MSW Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs

You enabled the broadening of our clinical opportunities to create more enriching experiences, which will expose students to multi-disciplinary settings, collaborative work environments and more successful outcomes. You made it possible to expand our chiropractic services through our Health Centers in the St. Louis area, enhancing patient care and student education opportunities. And you continued to provide the resources that allow us to invest in mutually beneficial partnerships with our peers in education to help advance the profession and remain innovative leaders in health care. The gifts you provided have not only helped sustain our university in our daily operation, they have allowed us to push the envelope, venture forward and pursue opportunities that will serve our students and our patients for years to come. You have a choice on how to spend your dollars, where to lend your talent and resources and how to spend your time. For many of us, those choices live in our passions, connections and experiences. For all of us, those choices are a hope for a better future. The intersection of health care and higher education is ever-changing, yet we are steadfast and confident on our course to reach new heights of excellence, guided by history and mission, and empowered by our students, faculty, staff and community of supporters. Thank you for the impact you have made, and will continue to make, on our institution and in the world. Sincerely,

Lee Van Dusen, DC Vice President of Strategic Performance & Continuous Improvement

Logan’s Master of Science Degree in Nutrition & Human Performance is accepted into an early adopter demonstration program through the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), among the first of only 19 applications accepted. The goal of the early adopter program is to identify future education models across colleges, universities and organizations that can produce professionals prepared for emerging and innovative health care.

August 2018 Logan University creates a partnership with the University of Memphis that grants student athletes access to on-site chiropractic care through team chiropractic physician and Logan alumnus Jude Miller, DC, MS, CCSP, CME (2011). Logan DC students now have opportunities to complete rotations under the supervision of Dr. Miller.

Scholarships Donor-supported scholarships enable brighter futures for Logan students. Beyond reducing students’ financial burdens, scholarships are catalysts for confident leaders who can make a difference in the lives of others. Opportunities to support students at Logan abound, from individual scholarships to the Forever Chiropractic Forever Logan Scholarship Endowment. In this Annual Report, we highlight both individuals who have been inspired to give and the students who have been directly impacted by generous donations. The investments made by these advocates of education live on forever in our students and the lives they touch.

Sheldon Stuckart

Scholarship Recipient

As a recent college graduate with a degree in exercise science, Sheldon Stuckart was passionate about helping athletes enhance their human performance. Yet the more he worked with athletes, the more he yearned to find the root of their injuries, rather than working around them.

My scholarship gave me the financial freedom to pursue continuing education and allowed me to take certain electives that are now benefiting my patients. It also has helped expand my knowledge of treatment plans and approaches to caring for the body.

“I felt my potential was limited by the career path I was on,” he said. “Then I met Logan chiropractic student interns and loved the knowledge they had for the body.” Now well into his chiropractic education at Logan, Sheldon said he feels empowered by the potential he has to help all individuals, not just athletes. “I feel I can treat someone with a sports-related injury, and also someone who may not have been able to get out of bed or walk their dog. To me, improving the human experience is really meaningful.” Sheldon said he looks forward to the day where he can show his appreciation to his donors by paying it forward. “I would love to create a scholarship for a Logan DC so they, too, can see the impact of giving.”

Lydia Scherle

Scholarship Recipient

In 2018, Lydia Scherle earned scholarships from Drs. Jordan and Brooke Hawkins, Foot Levelers, Inc. and Standard Process, Inc. She said the scholarships have enabled her to take financial stress off her mind while preparing for the future.

I want to thank these scholarship donors from the bottom of my heart. Their gift is inspiring and makes me want to give back to the chiropractic profession and support Logan students, just as they have.

“When I applied for scholarships, I was in a really difficult trimester. When I received emails that I had earned not one, but three scholarships, it gave me the motivation and encouragement I needed to push through. I immediately thought, ‘I can do this. If I put in the hard work now, I’ll see the benefits in the future.’” Lydia is slated to graduate with her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan in August 2019. She plans to return to her hometown of Jasper, Indiana, where she looks forward to helping the community that did so much for her.

Donor Snapshots Peter Feldkamp, DC The deep connections Dr. Peter Feldkamp (1988) made when he was a chiropractic student at Logan have made a lasting impact. Now, more than 30 years after he graduated and started practicing in Grove City, Ohio, Dr. Feldkamp is a strong advocate for the university, its mission and the next generation of chiropractors … one of whom is his son, Patrick, a Logan student. Dr. Feldkamp said his gift to the Forever Chiropractic Forever Logan Scholarship Endowment stems from his appreciation for his education, the dedication of Logan faculty and his commitment to the future of chiropractic and the potential it holds. “Many of Patrick’s instructors are the same ones I had. So, I’ve enjoyed seeing the continuum of care and teaching at Logan,” Dr. Feldkamp said. “Knowing they’ve stayed the course and have a love of Logan is inspiring to me in practice.”

Brooke Hawkins, DC & Jordan Hawkins, DC After earning their Doctor of Chiropractic degrees from Logan University, high school sweethearts Drs. Brooke and Jordan Hawkins returned to their small hometown of Loogootee, Indiana, to set up their family wellness practice, Hawkins Health Center. “As a chiropractic practice in a small town, many of our patients come to us as a significant source for their health care needs,” Dr. Brooke Hawkins said. “Our care for the community has helped us grow the practice bigger than we ever imagined.” Today, the doctors share their knowledge of building a practice from the ground up with the next generation of chiropractors. Since 2017, they have assisted students through the Drs. Jordan and Brooke Hawkins Scholarship, which awards one Trimester 7 student a scholarship and mentorship. “We love giving back to current Logan students and the chiropractic community. In meeting with students, we realized it’s hard to know what to do upon graduation, so we hope our mentoring guides them to success,” Dr. Brooke Hawkins said.
