Academic Dress, Hoods & Guest Hooders
The caps, gowns and hoods worn by the faculty and students at formal convocations are today’s formal dress of the worldwide academic community. While now worn only at formal convocations, such dress was originally the normal garb of academics as they went about their daily business. It originated in Europe more than a thousand years ago; like universities and colleges themselves, it developed within the church, and all academics were once at least in minor orders within the church. The robes and hoods are stylized versions of those monastic robes. The style of the robe indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer—bachelor sleeves are pointed and the robe is plain. Master’s robe sleeves are oblong, while the doctoral robe sleeves are gathered at the wrist, and the robe itself has velvet bands. Another badge of the doctoral degree is a gold tassel worn on the cap.
Master, doctorate and professional doctorate graduates participate in a hooding ceremony during graduation. The hoods indicate the degree level, the academic area of degree and the school which granted it. The size of the hood indicates the degree level, the outer band of the hood indicates, by color, the degree discipline, the bright, silken interior of the hood, by its color and design, indicates its source. Each university and college has a distinctive hood.
During the hooding process, a sash-like garment of blue and white (Logan’s school colors) and the color that represents the discipline of the degree being granted is placed around the neck of the graduate.
4
Hooding takes place by the President, Provost and/or the Dean of the College. The garment is then arranged so that it flows down the back of the graduate, revealing the colors of the school and discipline. For graduates with more than one degree, only one hood is worn at any given time.
Doctorate and professional doctorate students are allowed to invite a guest hooder to hood them during the graduation ceremony, provided the guest hooder meets a specific set of guidelines.
The colors of the hoods worn by faculty and administration indicate the major field of study:
Arts, Letters, Humanities: White
Business: Drab
Chiropractic: Grey
Communication: Crimson
Dentistry: Lilac
Education: Light Blue
Engineering: Orange
Library Science: Lemon
Medicine: Hunter Green
Pharmacy: Olive
Philosophy: Dark Blue
Physical Education: Sage Green
Science: Gold
Theology: Scarlet
Graduates wearing white cords are considered Logan Legacies, an individual who matriculated into their program of study after an immediate family member graduated from Logan. Graduates wearing blue cords have achieved academic honors. The cords are given in recognition of exceptional academic performance in the graduates’ degree program. Graduates wearing a medal have achieved the highest overall grade point average in their degree program and wear the medal in recognition of their academic excellence.

Commencement Speaker
KENT S. GREENAWALT
Kent S. Greenawalt is Chairman and CEO of Foot Levelers, Inc., a Roanoke-based company that designs and manufactures custom-made foot orthotics, products that have helped millions of patients overcome pain and improve their health. Now in its 71st year of business, Foot Levelers has operated in Roanoke, Virginia since 1988. Kent is also the founder and Chairman of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, a 501(c)3 non-profit that strives to promote the benefits of Chiropractic care to the public.
Kent has helped revolutionize the way healthcare providers treat patients by developing and patenting dozens of products in the United States and abroad. The orthotics designed by Foot Levelers - each pair custom-built based on a 3D mold or scan of a patient’s feet - are backed by more research than any other competing product with dozens of articles that speak to the efficacy in treating pain, improving athletic performance, and enhancing overall wellness.
As Chairman of Foot Levelers’ Educational Division, Kent leads the way in providing educational seminars for healthcare providers around the globe. Kent is an avid philanthropist, supporter of research and education, and recipient of dozens of awards. He has served on the United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) Board as a member-at-large. Kent has dedicated his life to the chiropractic profession and continues to make a significant and long-lasting impact on doctors and their care.

Chiropractic Oath
In accordance with the law of nature, that law which God has prescribed to all people; and in consequence of my dedication to getting the sick well by the application of that law, I promise and swear to keep, to the best of my ability and judgement, the following Oath:
I will observe and practice every acknowledged rule of professional conduct in relation with my profession, my patient, my colleague and myself.
I will keep an open-mind regarding the progress of my profession, provided that these progressions shall be confined within the boundaries of the chiropractic science, philosophy and art.
I will serve my patient to the best of my ability, violating neither their confidences nor their dignity, and in my association with patients I shall not violate that which is moral and right.
I shall regard and refer to my fellow chiropractor with honor, giving credit where it is due.
I shall improve my knowledge and skill, firm in my resolution to justify the responsibility, which the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic symbolizes and imposes.
To all this, I pledge myself, knowing these ideals are prescribed by the dictates of reason alone.

Land Acknowledgement
Logan University acknowledges that we gather today on the ancestral lands of the Osage Nation, Quapaw Nation, Kaskaskia Tribe and Kickapoo Tribe who were removed unjustly, and that we in this community are the beneficiaries of that removal. We honor them as we live, work and study here at Logan University and thank them for their stewardship of this land.
