Logan Art Gallery

Logan Art Gallery celebrates the diverse practices of visual artists, craft workers and designers and presents a dynamic exhibition program for residents and visitors to the region. Exhibitions feature touring exhibitions, local artists, visiting artists and works from the Logan Art Collection. An extensive range of free public programs is offered and includes guided tours, practical workshops, special events and artist talks. A dedicated Young Peoples Gallery showcases exhibitions for young people or by young people and provides fun, interactive activities for younger visitors. Logan Art Gallery also promotes locally created contemporary gifts and collectables that are available for purchase from the gallery store.

Large groups are encouraged to call and inform us of their intended visit. Logan Art Gallery staff will provide free tours to interested groups booking at least a week in advance of their visit. Bimblebox: art – science – nature Curated by Beth Jackson from a project initiated by artist Jill Sampson, Bimblebox: art – science – nature focusses on the Bimblebox Nature Refuge, its environmental, social, and scientific significance and an artist group’s creative response to their experience of this unique and threatened environment.

Bimblebox: art – science – nature is a touring exhibition partnered by Museums & Galleries Queensland and Redland Art Gallery in association with Bimblebox Nature Refuge. Assisted by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts’ Visions of Australia program, the Gordon Darling Foundation and proudly sponsored by Artfully, Tangible Media, Planet Boab, Wotif.com, Platypus Graphics, artisan and At A Glance.

Woodridge State School was one of only ten schools in Queensland to take part in an exchange exhibition with Hubei, China, as part of Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Out of the Box festival. One Sun, One World – Many Dreams features artworks by Woodridge’s Year 3 students working with artist-in-residence Nicola Hooper.

An exhibition of Rangoli by Daisy Hill artist Madhu Khanna. Rangoli is a traditional Indian artform using brightly coloured sand, coloured rice or flower petals to create beautiful decorative patterns.

Punuku Tjukurpa Punuku Tjukurpa showcases works from the Maruku Arts archive at Mutitjulu near Uluru in the Northern Territory. An Artback NT touring exhibition developed in partnership with Maruku Arts. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Pa Kor Day: industrial tapes as cultural traditions This exhibition documents a series of workshops, conducted at various Logan City Council Libraries, by artist Vanghoua Anthony Vue with young members of Logan’s Hmong community.

This exhibition is support by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Logan City Council partnership to support local arts and culture.

Christmas decorations from recycled material: Polish star and silver dove with artist Mary Barron Join Logan arts, craft and design treasure store artist Mary Barron and learn how to create Christmas decorations made from recycled materials such as old magazines, Christmas cards and wrapping paper, cereal boxes, cardboard, plastic wire ties, curling ribbon, and potato chip packets.

Small scale organic themed mixed media collage with artist Susan Wellingham Join Logan arts, craft and design treasure store artist Susan Wellingham and create a small scale mixed-media collage on canvas inspired by organic forms.

Handmade felted jewellery with artist Jacqui Damon Make a beautiful textile jewellery statement piece. Work with coloured fleece, combine vibrant colours and textures to create beautiful textile jewellery using the hand felting technique.

Master class. Bimblebox: art – science – nature, Organic monoprintmaking with artist Jude Roberts

Bimblebox: art – science – nature artist Donna Davis will teach you how to use a USB microscope and examine the hidden life and beauty of plants and flowers. Drawing inspiration from the microscopic world, participants will use clay to create forms that reflect their interpretation of what they see.

Bimblebox: art – science – nature artist Jude Roberts will introduce participants to an ephemeral method of monoprinting using a variety of organic materials. An extension to the monotypes is the addition of some elements of drawing with carbon paper.

Friday 18 November, 10am to 4pm Places available: 12 For ages: Adults What to bring: Camera. Various fruit/flowers such as mango, apple, ginger stalks, mulberry; any fruit or veg that can be placed in a blender to make newsprint

Handmade felted slippers with artist Jacqui Damon Get your creativity flowing with this vigorous slipper making workshop. Explore a variety of colours to create your own unique pair of hand felted slippers using the process of wet felting.

Afterschool workshop: Monoprinting with natural objects Be inspired be the Bimblebox: art – science – nature exhibition. Create a series of black and white monoprints using natural found objects such as leaves.

Bimblebox: art – science – nature, Polyester plate lithography printmaking with artist Nicola Hooper Join Nicola Hooper for this highly unique and specialised non-toxic form of lithography developed in the U.S.A. and not yet taught in Australia. Be inspired by the Bimblebox: art – science – nature exhibition and produce individual, multi-coloured prints from semi-transparent plates.

Public access to the printing press

The following public programs will be held in conjunction with the exhibitions Punuku Tjukurpa, Rangoli by Madhu Khanna and Pa Kor Day: industrial tapes as cultural traditions by Vanghoua Anthony Vue.

Do you like printmaking but don’t have access to a printing press? Logan Art Gallery will provide free access to the workshop’s medium sized printing press. Experience in using a printing press is essential as this is a non-tutored session.

Punuku Tjukurpa: Curator’s floor talk Join Maruku Arts' curator of Punuku Tjukurpa for this informative floor talk through the exhibition. Objects on display feature punu (wooden artefacts and implements) and walka (burnt patterns using hot wires) created by three generations of Anangu, Central and Western Desert people.

A SPECIAL CULTURAL EVENT Punuku Tjukurpa: Artists’ talks, demonstrations, and workshops Enjoy a special afternoon of Aboriginal culture. Join the artists from Maruku Arts at Mutitjulu, near Uluru in the Northern Territory, for demonstrations and hands-on workshops. Listen to the artists talk about punu (wooden artefacts and implements) with an exciting carving demonstration. Learn about walka (burnt patterns using hot wires) and engage in walka tjukurpa, sand drawings and storytelling.

Fluoro symbols: learn to make papercuts with artist Vanghoua Anthony Vue Join artist Vanghoua Anthony Vue for a paper cut-out workshop. Be inspired by the shapes and patterns of Hmong and Australian cultures and produce individual, fluorescent symbols which can be lit up with ultra-violet lights.

Kids’ on Tour 2017: The Gabori Sisters, Gathering by the Sea takes children on a journey to the artists’ homeland of Bentinck Island in Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria. Through specially designed interactive hands-on making and multimedia activities, young visitors will be introduced to the unique and important relationship the Kaiadilt people share with the sea and the creatures who inhabit the waters around the Island.

Kids on tour is offered as a free program to regional Queensland communities through QAGOMA’s Regional Services department and generously supported by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.

Art and Dementia Program Once a month, Logan Art Gallery offers a discussion-based tour of works of art for people with dementia and their carers. Facilitated by our trained volunteers, the participants are encouraged to contribute knowledge, engage in interpretation, express emotions and recall memories. Involvement in this nationwide program has been shown to increase well-being and the quality of life for participants.

Enjoy Creative Markets outside the gallery where individual stall holders will present their wares including crafts, handmade clothes and sweets, plus food and drink. Pick up an individual and unique gift from the market or the Logan Art Gallery Store.

Visit Logan Art Gallery’s workshop to see artists demonstrate their skills in a variety of crafts including jewellery, woodcarving, needlepoint, textiles, ceramics, printmaking and card collage. This is a unique opportunity to talk with artists about their work and find out how they make it.

Logan Artworkers Networking Events (LANE) Calling all artists, performers, writers and cultural workers Logan Artworkers Networking Events (LANE) developed through feedback from arts practitioners wanting to establish links with each other, to help build a stronger arts community in the city and participate in vibrant local projects. LANE are held at Logan Art Gallery and explore a variety of themes to develop and nurture creativity in the City of Logan so that the community benefits socially and economically from the arts. Arts grants available Logan City Council is now accepting applications for the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). RADF supports professional and emerging professional artists and artsworkers to practise their art, for and with communities, resulting in mutual development of the professional artists, arts workers and communities in Logan. Arts professionals from all art forms including dance, music, design, museum and cultural heritage, new media, visual arts, writing and theatre are encouraged to apply.
