Cultural Nyeumba-Meta Nyeumba-Meta is a space and collection at Logan Central Library that aims to foster respect for Australian Indigenous cultures. The space includes a yarning circle and artwork, and it has regular events throughout the year. Nyeumba-Meta was named to reflect the Yugambeh and Torres Strait Islander languages. Nyeumba in Yugambeh language means “teaching or learning” while Meta in Eastern Torres Strait Islander language means “house”. Want to know what is in the collection? Creatives Australian Poetry Slam 2018 workshop and Logan heat Are you Australia’s next slam champion? Once again the search is on for brave new voices to speak their mind at the Queensland heats of the Australian Poetry Slam ’18 Contestants have two minutes to own the stage, rock the mic and win over the crowd with their original spoken word poetry. Heats feature special appearances by noted slam poets. Judges from the audience rate each performance and two worthy wordsmiths will carry on battling it out in Queensland’s State Final on Sunday, 26 August 2018 at the Queensland Poetry Festival.
Only the first 20 competitors to sign up may compete. Heat sign-up opens at 6pm, 30 minutes before the event start time. If you’d like to brush up on your slam skills before taking the stage, Brisbane spoken word performer Angela Peita will give you some tips and tricks and get you ready to rock the mic.
