I am a newly educated architect with work experience and education in both the USA and Denmark. I have worked on competitions and commisions at a variety of scales through many different project phases from schematic design and design development, through permitting and construction. At Dorte Mandrup architects, I have had an integral roll in the winning of several prestigious competitions including The Whale, an arctic museum in Andenes, Norway.

Bells of Alcaçovas UNESCO Center for Chocalhieros Thesis Project | Summer 2020 1.600 sq. m Censors: Stephen D. Willacy, Mads Bay Møller, and David T. Monné Advisor: Thomas William Lee Location: Alcaçovas, Portugal

The rolling hills of Alentejo, Portugal are alive with the sound of music! Herds of sheep, cows, and even turkeys graze the landscape fitted with handmade bells which have been crafted by local chocalhieros, or cowbell makers, for thousands of years. Today, there are only a handful chocalhieros left, and the craft is on the brink of extinction. In 2015, UNESCO's register for intangible cultural heritage stepped in, as an effort to raise awareness and encourage a market for the training of new apprentices. This project is a UNESCO center for cowbell makers, hosting the surviving local cowbell makers and shepherds as well as other cowbell makers from across the world, a facility for the training of new apprentices, as well as visitors who are interested in the region and the process of cowbell making. The architecture is developed around the tectonics of cowbell production, and playfully responds to the local context.

Bird House 9th Semester | Autumn 2018 80 sq. m Advisor: Thomas William Lee Location: Aarhus, Denmark

A house is a tool for living, and must respond to the needs of the inhabiting individual. This house, designed into a gap of a housing block in Ă˜gadekvarter in Aarhus, is developed as both a dwelling and multi-tool for an Ornithologist. Essentially a bird watching tower inside of an aviary, this house allows the Birds are one of the few creatures that have found a way to survive, and in fact, thrive, in our cities. The ornithologist therefore would have an interest in studying birds in both natural and urban habitat. The project introduces an uncanny combination of the innocuous hobby of spying on birds, that, when transplanted into an urban context, becomes a perhaps uncomfortable panopticon for both the ornithologist and their neighbors.

Academic Work | Mejlgade Aftensbad

(Extra)ordinary Everyday Life: One of the many roles of an architect is to is to discover the extraordinary possibilities within the mundane everyday experience. Beginning with a study of the banal experience of arriving home, my studio partner Julia and I developed an elevated arrival sequence via a courtyard bathing facility for the residents of a small block on Mejlgade 78. The courtyard which housed the intervention received very little direct sunlight throughout the year, making it almost unusable. We worked with shadow and reflection of the bathing pools to enhance the experience of light and darkness, earth and sky as bathers make their way through the bathing sequence on their way home.

Test models for the concrete surfaces Wood formwork One of the casts that we found particularly interesting was wood formwork. This traditional way of casting shows the details from the wood very cleary and has a very strong direction in its texture.

Concrete Through small experiments we have investigated concrete’s abillity to take shape of what it is casted against. We see concrete as an honest material that always reveals its mould.

Professional Work | The Whale

I was part of the core design team for this winning competition, working from the concept phase to delivery. I had a role in producing all shown material, except for the renderings, which are produced by Mir.no The stone clad skin of the Whale museum in the Arctic breaches gently over the peninsula at the edge of the arctic fishing village of Andenes, on the Norwegian island Andøya. Just a few miles away, a deep undersea valley cuts into the earth, creating a feeding grounds for visiting whales. The museum design references the elusive, wondrous character of the undersea giants that roam the great oceans, and the drama of the surrounding landscape both above and below the waters surface. The museum provides a space for visiting whale watchers to learn about the whales and their relationship with humans, and serves as a catalyst for tourism, which has become the economic lifeline for Andenes and the surrounding villages.

Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center Kyiv, Ukraine 12.000 sq. m Architect: Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter Landscape: Martha Schwartz Partners Engineer: Thornton Thomasetti Exhibition Consultant: Ralph Appelbaum Associates Renderings by Mir

I was part of the core design team for this two phase competition, which was awarded 2nd place out of 10 finalists. I worked from the concept phase to delivery in both phases of the competition. Buried beneath a suburban park northwest of Kyiv, Ukraine lies the Babyn Yar Ravine which was the site of one of the most horrific events in human history. In September 1941, over 33,000 Jews were murdered at the hands of the Nazi SS. The approach to the museum is guided by a deep scar in the landscape that follows the path of the original ravine, taking the visitor through the exhibitions at the lowest levels of the building. The house is organized around a large atrium facing the ravine and reaching up towards the sky, evoking a recognition of a dark past, and hope for a brighter future. This project proposal serves to commemorate a loss that is beyond human imagination, allowing visitors, researchers, victims and their families to share a space of learning, contemplation, and healing.

Kromet Gothenburg, Sweden 37.500 sq. m Architect: Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter Landscape: Bisgaard Landscape Engineer: Rambøll

As part of the design team in the early part of this winning competition, I helped develop the overall form and concept which meets strict requirements and achieves a sculptural quality. This is the largest project I have worked on and really enjoyed the massive jump in scale. This ambitious wood superstructure is designed for a new neighborhood on Gothenburg's rapidly developing waterfront. The project artistically dances around the requirements for maximizing floor area ratio and the peculiar site envelope, while providing light and airy apartments, offices, and public venues. The heavy timber crown floats over a glass and concrete base, which hosts a wide variety of public functions and navigates connections to the adjacent bridge and seawall.

A handful of physical form studies My role in the project was focused on the overall form and concept, which included the production of dozens of digital and physical models. An early schematic sketch from my moleskin While working on the schemes, i found it helpful to sketch on the ones I found to be most promising or interesting.

Playful form The sloping roofs allow glassed in terraces and skylights while pulling light deep into the courtyard. Exploded Axonometric A glass and wood facade clads the heavy timber structure, perched atop a set of thin concrete ramps.

Massing The form squeezes the most out of the site's zoning, and responds to the climatic conditions and context. Flexible program The simple grid allows for changing infill to grow and shrink different uses per demand.
