individuals, businesses and the public sector. Chairman Reynie Rutledge says the bank’s vision is to be Arkansas’ premier financial services company. That means “providing the most responsive, innovative and secure
financial solutions to our customers with exceptional and personalized service.” Supported by the strength of $520 million in total capital and $4.193 billion in assets, First Security has the ability to meet any financing need. The bank’s employees and its Teal Grill are often seen assisting in community projects. Last year, the bank published a cookbook filled with recipes from employees, customers and members of the Kids Club. Proceeds from cookbook sales were given to the Food Bank of Arkansas — a gift of $25,000. The popular book, “What’s Cookin’ at First Security,” is now in its second printing. Local clothier offers chic selections and secures top clothing spot By MEGAN REYNOLDS LOG CABIN STAFF WRITER
Clothier HipSway, a “chic boutique” for men and women, has been named as this year’s best overall clothing store. Offering a wide variety of the latest and most trendy men’s and women’s apparel, shoes and accessories, the store is in its sixth year at 920 Locust Avenue — a convenient, accessible location in downtown Conway. Owners are Rick and Shea Cantabery and Abby King. King says the store was founded by her father in 2006, and was named after an old one-hit-wonder music group. “He’s kind of a music junkie,” King said. “They only had one hit, but it kind of stuck with him.” King said after graduating from the University of Central Arkansas with a degree in secondary education five years ago, she decided to go into the business with her father, and has had no regrets. “I have over 11 years of retail experience,” King said. “Retail has always been my passion and it has always been something that I enjoy. I really love what I do.” According to King, frequent trips to markets in Dallas and Las Vegas and a lot of research is put into brand selection and staying up-to-date
on the latest trends. Popular items include a wide selection of TOMS shoes, bracelets by Lily and Laura and Miss Me jeans. The store also offers a selection of locally-cultivated brands and items, including KatEva jewelry by Little Rock jeweler Shannon Jeffrey and V-neck tees by Conwaybased clothier Southern Dignity. King attributed a loyal customer base to the business’ commitment to outstanding customer service. “We’ve been very fortunate,” King said. “We’ve been very successful and have grown over the years, and a big portion of that has to do with the girls that work for us. But it also has a lot to do with our customers.”
A website for the business is under development, but the store’s Facebook page has been a popular go-to for customers looking for a good deal. The business routinely features auctions for items that are posted to the Facebook page at a special price and are sold to the first bidder. Store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Effective July 1, the store will be open from noon-5 p.m. on Sundays. Contact HipSway at 501-548-3545. Best Hardware: Ace, ‘the helpful place’ By SCARLET SIMS log cabin STAFF WRITER
Ace Hardware’s allure is its unique offerings and friendly customer service, said Brian Porterfield, marketing manager for the store, located at 1085 Morningside Drive. “We’ve got nuts and bolts, but we’ve got so much more,” Porterfield said. “You don’t just walk in and help yourself; we have someone meet you at the door. The customer is No. 1.” For the second year in row, the hometown-style hardware store was voted “best of ” by Faulkner County residents. The store opened in Conway about six years ago, but owners Todd and LeAnn Hayes have been run-
ning an Ace Hardware in Morrilton for about 17 years. With 24,000 square feet, Ace Hardware in Conway has a little bit to offer everyone, Porterfield said. The store has collegiate gear for die-hard University of Central Arkansas and Razorback fans, a large section for home accessories for those looking to redo their home’s decor and full lines of tools for those in need of a manly, handyman gadget. “It’s ‘Ace, the helpful place,’ is our motto,” Porterfield said. “We want to be that local, small-town hardware With 24,000 square feet, Ace Hardware has lots to offer. Tourists often stop by and snap pictures of each other in front of Ace’s 6-foot, 300-pound wind chime. “They just think it’s neat,” Porterfield said. The store sees anywhere from 250-500 customers a day — more on weekends, Porterfield said. Customers seem happy with the products, the customer service and the experts who help sort out what is needed to fix a problem. Ace has experts in different departments to help with paint, plumbing and electrical questions, Porterfield said. “We like appealing to what customer’s want,” Porterfield said. “We’re going to continue to make them No. 1.”

White attributed the time and care her stylists put into their efforts as one of the reason’s clients keep coming back for more. “We take the time with our clients in giving them the best possible result in whatever they want,” White said. “When people come here,
they aren’t rushed.” White said four color specialists at the salon are “excellent” at what they do. “They’ve been doing hair with a combined average of 44 years. They know the business.” White said the salon averages between 30-50 customers a day. “We appreciate everyone that came through for us,” White said. “We have worked so hard where we are. We are continuing to grow and the business is just exploding, which is really great.” The salon is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Michelangelo’s takes top Italian honor
COURTNEY SPRADLIN PHOTO
Restaurant bringing in more specialized food items By Richard Duke log cabin staff writer
Establishing a fine Italian restaurant in downtown Conway may have seemed a bit daunting, but after four and a
half years, Michelangelo’s has flourished, earning the Best Italian for 2012. Owner Mike Coats said the idea for the restaurant, which is currently bringing in more
specialized food items including regional seafood, came from his days working for Red Lobster. Ideas came from working with members of Macaroni Grill. “Nothing is original anymore,” Coats said. “What we try and do is pick up things from other great places, whether it be food, service or atmosphere.” With a menu that features steak, chicken, pork and seafood as well as an array of pasta, there is something for everyone at the fashionable location at 1117 Oak St., and Coats said that his goal is to feature more foods bought in Faulkner County. “I think it makes the customer proud to know that a certain vegetable or meat is local,” Coats said. “It’s something that we work very hard on doing.”
COURTNEY SPRADLIN PHOTO
Between Michelangelo’s and Mike’s Place, Coats and his partners also keep the local economy thriving by hav-
ing nine managers and about 120 employees. “It has been the visionary people at the Conway Chamber of Com-
merce that saw the long term goals for downtown Conway,” he said. “And we are very proud to be a part of it.”

Mike’s Place secures top overall restaurant again By Richard Duke log cabin staff writer
The old saying goes that the only things that are constant are death and taxes. You can add Mike’s Place winning best overall restaurant to that list. The restaurant, located in the red brick and mortar among fountains and plants on 808 Front St., just celebrated its seventh anniversary, and it takes home the prize for the sixth year. Its first year, it won best new restaurant. In addition, Mike’s Place won Best Seafood and Best Business Lunch. It also took home runner-up honors in Family Atmosphere and Steakhouse. Owner Mike Coats is proud of the accolades, but he said it speaks more about his clientele than anything he has done. “We have loyal customers,” Coats said. “They were the ones who came in at the beginning and dealt with the $50 membership fee and fought the odds to get downtown Conway going.” Advertised as a place for seafood, steak and wood fire pizza, Mike’s Place has an atmo-

sphere reminiscent of a New Orleans haunt, with mood lighting and a style that attracts everyone from families to a couple wanting a night out on the town. “The responsibility was immense to get this type of environment right,” Coats said. “I think this is a place that if people come from out of town, people who live
here want to bring them here, and that is something to be proud of.” Coats prides himself at the entire downtown area, noting that more people don’t need nearby Little Rock in order to enjoy good food and drinks. “Downtown is still growing,” he said. “I think the best days are ahead of us.”

Baker Eye offers customer care By SCARLET SIMS LOG CABIN STAFF reporter
Baker Eye Institute is the place to go for eye care. Voters voted the business “best of,” giving a nod to founder Dr. David Littleton Baker and his effort to provide “individualized care at every step.” “He’ll do anything he can,” administrator Derek Sherwood said. “If he can get them out of glasses, he will.” Baker Eye Institute, located at 810 Merriman St., has been serving Central Arkansas’ eye-care needs for more than 16 years. Over his career, Baker has performed more than 20,000 surgeries, including nostitch cataract surgery, standard and custom Lasik, IntraLase as-

Baker, a Conway native, is board certified in Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine. He graduated Hendrix College and then earned his Medical Degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
“What makes us proudest at BEI is that patients and referring optometrists from around the state put their trust in Dr. Baker to restore their vision through cataract surgery,” Sherwood said in e-mail. “Dr. Baker and his staff utilize their many years of experience and expertise to achieve the best result he can for each individual patient.”
