Prepare Your Home for Holiday Entertaining n For close family and friends, consider adding personal touches like mementos of holidays past. n Or go with a themed approach with similar colors and textures that you carry throughout the house.

Family Features As the holiday season approaches and you’re tasked with hosting family and friends, it can be a little overwhelming to imagine all the work that has to take place for a successful celebration. However, there’s no reason the host can’t join in the fun. To help keep calm and have your home ready for the party, follow these tips.

Cleaning

More often than not, the first step to readying your home for a house full of guests is to clean. Start by going room to room seeking out trash, recyclables and things that can be stored away – anything to clear up much-needed space. Once the clutter is cleared, work from the top down to clean surfaces, so any dust or debris that hits the floor can be vacuumed or swept neatly

away. Remember to steer clear of harsh or highly fragrant chemicals, which may be an irritant to some guests.

Planning

Staying organized and having a precise plan are vital to putting together the perfect night with family and friends. Make sure to nail down the specifics, such as the number of guests, what food will be brought, what needs prepared in advance and what can wait until the big day. Making lists and involving others in the family to help can make a seemingly insurmountable volume of work feel instantly manageable. As you think through your plans, remember to anticipate the unexpected and have an emergency party kit on hand to quickly respond to pitfalls, like spills or broken glass, before they derail the festivities.

Decorating

With all the energy you put into planning and upgrading, don’t overlook the importance of taking time to make your home shine with a creative touch. Go festive with holiday-specific decor or keep it classic with timeless decorations placed throughout the home to make it really sparkle. For close family and friends, consider adding personal touches like mementos of holidays past. Or go with a themed approach with similar colors and textures that you carry throughout the house.

Get Organized for Entertaining

Hosting a holiday gathering is no small feat, but you can get organized ahead of the big day with these entertaining tips. Set the guest list early: Send out invites in advance. Longer notice allows for you to better

gauge who will be attending and how much food you’ll need to make. Rather than waiting to see who shows up and who doesn’t, send out RSVPs via mail or email so that you have a precise idea of how many people to plan for. Set the table the day before: Organizing where you can, such as setting out plates and silverware in advance, allows you to focus on preparing food and drinks on the day of the party. Unless you’ll be using fresh cut flowers, go ahead and complete the centerpieces and any other decorative touches the night before, as well. Make a party-night cheat sheet: Keep a checklist nearby so you don’t forget about any of your delicious courses or what tasks need completed throughout the evening. Remember to include items like refreshing the ice bucket and swapping out buffet dishes or appetizer platters periodically.

Brighter Lights Will Continue in Conway, Greenbrier By Marisa Hicks Log Cabin Staff Writer The well-known Christmas light display on Tony Circle has a new home this year — Conway’s First Baptist Church at 1719 Robinson Ave. Tony Brighter, the man behind the light performance, announced in September that he and his wife would be moving to Florida, apologizing for the inevitable ending of the light performance. However, in his search to find a new home for the show, Conway’s First Baptist Church stepped up to the forefront. “When we announced that we would no longer be doing the show and would be moving to Florida, we started our search for someone that might want to pickup putting on the show in our absence,” Brighter wrote in a Facebook post. “Conway’s First Baptist Church came to us and after

some discussions, we determined that they were where we wanted all of the equipment to go.” According to church officials, the display will light up Conway beginning Dec. 4 and continue until Christmas Day. Brighter will train a team at the church to synchronize the light show with music on 89.9 FM. He said major benefit to the show’s new home would be the parking lot across the street that would “allow for visitors to sit and enjoy the show for a while without causing any traffic problems.” Brighter said he wanted onlookers to be understanding the show was a work-in-progress at its new home. “When we did the show, we spent months planning for everything each year,” he said. “We are now attempting to move a light show that ran on seven homes in a cul-de-sac to a Church in a very short period of time so it may not

be perfect this year.” Brighter pointed out the church has a “dedicated group” that is ready to put on a show for Conway residents and more. “The Church will be giving back to the community by putting on the show but they will also help the community because they will be taking collections to help those in need in our community,” he said. Tony and his wife, Angi, handed out more than 144,000 candy canes at their Conway home during their nine-year tradition. In that time, the Brighters witnessed two marriage proposals and provided a “safe haven” for children seeking treatment at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Brighter said his daughter will also continue to run a toned-down display at her home on Waycross Drive in the Baywood Subdivision in Greenbrier. WWW.THECABIN.NET 7

weather that the holidays bring. Use candles to add a finishing touch to a holiday gathering. They also make for a great host or hostess gift.

Mix and Match

Get Cozy

Add dynamism and vitality to your home by infusing older, vintage elements that you’ve had and enjoyed for years with more modern pieces that speak to you today. You can also breathe new life into these items by using them differently this year -for example, moving your favorite garland from the bannister to the mantel, or hanging a wreath on a wall instead of a door.

Think Scent

When many people plan their holiday decorations, they start with visuals. Why not try mixing it up by focusing on fragrance first? Scent is closely associated with memory, so adding holiday fragrances to your home allows you to both build new memories for future seasons and reflect on happy times in the past. For inspiration, draw on the vibrant spirit and brisk

Incorporate wintry throw pillows, quilts and blankets into living areas. Fabrics like table runners and tapestries can also add warmth around the house. Crank up the fireplace. Be sure that all your efforts work to combat the brisk season with a touch of coziness.

Beautiful Tablescapes

When hosting guests, don’t just set the table, create an impressive and unforgettable tablescape. One sleek and modern way to do so is to add candles, tumblers, vases, ornamental table toppers, fresh greens and seasonal flowers. Tumbler candles come in various sizes and designs, so you can stagger the heights for eye-catching appeal. This season, add fragrance, beauty, and brightness to your home with unique twists on traditional holiday themes.

16 HOLIDAY GUIDE 2016

Tips for Staying On Budget Associated Press It’s easy to get carried away by the spirit of the season and end up with stressful debt. According to a 2016 holiday shopping report by the Rubicon Project, consumers plan to spend 12 percent more on their holiday shopping than they did in 2015. This means Americans will spend an average of $1,175 this holiday season. Without a holiday spending game plan, it could also mean struggling to pay rent or mortgage and credit card debt. “Our customers spent an average of $1,395 last year on their holiday shopping,” says Elizabeth Halkos, chief revenue officer of Purchasing Power@, an employee purchase program offered as a voluntary benefit. “If they had used credit cards for their purchases and didn’t pay off the full amount within one month, they would have fallen into the trap of spending significantly more than the cost of the gift due to double-digit interest.” The most popular product categories for spending last year, according to Purchasing Power, were electronics, computers and televisions, with MacBooks and Smart TVs topping most lists. This holiday season, the company anticipates cellphones, gaming consoles and virtual reality gear will be especially strong sellers, as well as laptops and computers. An employee purchase program can save money over traditional financing options like credit cards or in-store financing, particularly for those prone to making minimum monthly payments or incurring late fees. A 12-month payroll deduction schedule

helps ensure no missed payments, eliminating the risk of late fees or loss of merchandise. There also is more time to pay off the balance, making holiday spending less stressful. And, under Purchasing Power’s program, consumers pay the same price whether they pay in cash in full or take advantage of the option to pay through payroll deduction. “Raising three teenage sons on just one salary means I have to be extremely careful about my Christmas spending,” confides Camillia Cooper, a project analyst for a healthcare company in Atlanta. “The purchasing program offered by my company provided me a way to give what my boys needed most-a laptop, a tablet and a smartphonewithout my having to pay for these items all at once or racking up big interest fees over the course of several months. The payroll deduction system proved the more responsible way for me to access the electronics my family needed to be more successful both at school and at home with their personal interests.” Ranked #103 in the Internet Retailer 2017 Mobile 500, Purchasing Power boasts an online product catalog of more than 45,000 items in 19 major product categories, including the hottest consumer electronics and retail products in the market, online education, auto services and vacation packages. Before shopping begins, Purchasing Power also recommends the following tips for setting a budget for the holiday season. Know your limit. Make a list and check it twice. Figure out how much you can spend on gifts, decorations or other items. Divide the total amount into a per-gift limit. If it doesn’t add up, cut back the gift list or consider making a baked item or other homemade gift, or giving a gift certificate for a service you might provide, such as babysitting, car washing or house cleaning. Keep track of expenses to stay on point with the budget. Shop wisely. Watch for special sale days and coupons. Many online retail sites offer free shipping, special discounts and other promotions during the holiday season. Looking ahead to next year, think about buying gifts that can be used and enjoyed throughout the year. After the holidays, look for deep sales on holiday wrapping paper and greeting cards to save for next year’s celebrations. Enjoy the season. The holiday season is stressful enough, so plan ahead and stick to the budget. There are many ways to participate in the holidays without spending money. Reduce stress by maintaining a daily routine as much as possible. Look for free holiday concerts presented within local communities.

5 Tips for Good Gut Health During the Holidays StatePoint Media The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of the year and you may have noticed you’re more prone to colds and upset stomach when you’re stressed. Stress tends to slow the digestive process. What’s more, 70 percent of the immune system lies in the digestive system, according to findings reported in “Clinical & Experimental Immunology.” Unfortunately, one of the most stressful seasons coincides with one of the most indulgent. To help, Vincent Pedre, MD, author of the new book, “Happy Gut: The Cleansing Program to Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy, and Eliminate Pain,” is offering useful tips to lessen digestive upset and keep your gut healthy over the holidays.

Pack healthful snacks

When traveling, people tend to grab unhealthy foods for convenience. Pack nutritious foods like carrots, apples, almonds and frozen yogurt to keep the body strong. Foods like yogurt, which contain probiotics, not only address digestive issues, but are said to help stave off colds. One study found that those who took a probiotic supplement with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a type of healthy probiotic bacteria, recovered earlier and reported less severe symptoms.

Eat mindfully

Eating in a hurry is a major no-no for good gut health, and makes you more likely to overeat, since it takes the brain about 20 minutes to recognize when you’re full. Plus, eating quickly can cause gas, acid indigestion and bloating. “When we stop and really enjoy what we’re eating we’re less likely to overdo it, and we’ll avoid issues like emotional eating,” says Dr. Pedre.

18 HOLIDAY GUIDE 2016

Relieve stress

Take some “me time.” Maintaining an exercise routine and practicing deep breathing relaxation techniques can do wonders for mental and digestive health, and help alleviate stress’ negative effects on the digestive system, such as gas, acid reflux and stomach cramps.

Maintain a sleep routine

Get an adequate night’s rest of at least eight hours nightly. Your body and gut like predictability. Plus, staying up late could make you more likely to visit the fridge and eat that piece of chocolate cake that’ll lead to an upset stomach.

Help your body naturally

Overeating or drinking is easy to do this time of year, but it can cause stomach distress. Check out local natural product retailers, which offer homoeopathic medicines like Nux vomica to relieve nausea, heartburn, acid indigestion or fullness associated with overindulgence of food or drink. While these uses have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for efficacy, Nux vomica is one of the most popular homeopathic medicines. It’s also easy to take. The pellets are quickly absorbed under the tongue without water, as opposed to being absorbed through the stomach, which may not be functioning at its peak. As a homeopathic medicine, it has no known side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, gas or drowsiness. To learn about relieving a variety of acute stomach issues, explore the Boiron Medicine Finder app. This free resource, available on Android and iOS devices, allows users to find the right homeopathic medicine for many everyday conditions. Both the stress and the fun of the holiday season can take a toll on gut health — take extra steps this season and beyond to feel your best.
