ICONTASTE OVEN BBQ

BY GERALD WASHINGTON

IT’S TOO HOT TO COOK OUT BRING YOUR BOSTON BUTT INSIDE

As everyone knows, spring has sprung and summer has just begun, or as my father once said “tis’ the season to be barbecuing.” I’ve got a great recipe for those who love the taste of barbecue, but don’t necessarily want to spend time slaving over a hot grill in the sun. This recipe is for pulled pork sandwiches, which are a summer favorite for barbecues. There are several ways to cook it, but I prefer the lazy way, which is slow roasting it in the oven. Here is what you will need: For the dry rub: 3 tablespoons paprika 1 tablespoon garlic powder (I used freeze dried garlic in mine) 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon dry mustard 3 tablespoons coarse salt 1 (5 to 7 pound) pork roast, preferably shoulder or Boston butt Mix the paprika, garlic power, brown sugar, dry mustard, and salt together in a small bowl. Rub the spice blend all over the pork and marinate for as long as you have time for, as little as 1 hour or up to overnight, covered, in the refrigerator. Preheat oven to 300 degrees, and put the pork in a roasting pan and bake for about 6 hours. Basically, roast the pork until it’s falling apart and a thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 170 degrees F. (Recipe courtesy of foodnetwork. com) Now that the hard part is done the question should be asked: What barbecue sauce are you going to use? For the traditionalist who likes using marinades, I suggest KC Masterpiece. It has a pleasant taste with a small tinge of hickory. It can be found at most places for under $3. My second sauce of choice is Sweet Baby Ray’s. It can be found for around $2 at your local grocer. It is a simple but amazing sauce, and it is one I use when I can’t get my hands on my all-time favorite — and hardest to find — Corey and Jay’s Really Awful Terrible Bourbon and Peach Barbecue Sauce. This sauce goes well with marinades and any Barbecue dish you can think of, burgers, ribs, pork, etc. It is only available for sale from the end of May until September, and it is $5, but the proceeds go to a charity called “The September Fund” that helps out kids with paying for college. You can find some at either Hastings here in Conway, or at the Metroplex in Little Rock.

The lazy way to slow roast pork

With all that said, hope you have a blissful barbecuing season, and may your blazing grills not burn your brisket due to being beleaguered by blunders. 11

EACH SHOW THIS SEASON

IS A JOURNEY - FOR THE CHARACTER AND I HOPE IT’S A JOURNEY FOR THE AUDIENCE - THAT THEY’LL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS, AND BECOME ENGAGED AND DELIGHTED WITH THE PRODUCTIONS.

WHERE THE MISSISSIPPI MEETS THE THAMES summer festival is in full swing Six seasons in is the perfect time to join the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre bandwagon. Actors from around the nation are at home again in Conway, and the professional theatre company is flourishing in central Arkansas. The company brings four productions and about 50 actors to the summer festival this year. William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” debuted June 7 on the green space at The Village at Hendrix, but that’s not the last chance to see the show by any means. Showings will continue throughout the month of June - until the festival ends July 1. The festival’s own director, Rebekah Scallet, has personally directed this cast of 17 through Shakespeare’s romantic tale of calamity that follows a shipwrecked Viola, a young woman who finds herself in a foreign, predominately male-dominated world. Mistaken identities, mixed signals and an unsettling of gender, class and social notions are woven throughout the plot. Next on the bill is this season’s musical based on Mark Twain’s classic tale of Huckleberry Finn. “Big River” features the Tony-award winning music of Roger Miller. The production also won Best Musical in 1985. The production’s director, Michael Susko, says “...it’s no surprise that this story of friendship and adventure continues to hold up over time.” Our familiar protagonist does his best to leave his expectations and dysfunctional family behind by faking his own death and attempting to live on his own. He gains a friend in a runaway slave, Jim, and the two set off on a raft down the Mississippi River in search of their respective freedoms. The first chance to see “Big River” at Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA was June 8, but catch any of the shows up until June 30. Scallet said the AST tradition is to bring a comedy, a musical, a tragedy and a kid’s show each season. The third production and a play to fit the tragic genre is “Richard III,” a three-hour “infectious” encounter with a politician. 13

14

Director Robert Quinlan says “Richard III” was one of the biggest crowd pleasers of its day. A poster for one of the first performances (close to the year 1600) read: “The Tragedy of Richard III: Containing the Treacherous Plots Against His Brother Clarence, the Pitiful Murder of His Innocent Nephews, His Tyrannical Usurpation, with the Whole Course of His Detested Life and Most Deserved Death.” Don’t believe that telling title is a spoiler, because the depths to this king’s wicked humor, ambition and lack of conscience will surprise you, again. A word from the director on “Richard III” - “We have tried to create a timeless feeling that evokes the historical period of the play while at the same blending some modern elements, reminding us that the dangers of tyranny are as real today as they were five centuries ago.” The choice of “Richard III” for an election year is no accident, Scallet said. “In this play we follow an evil but likable character. You get to follow a person with great political ambitions to the top. This seemed appropriate.” Richard debuts June 16 in Little Rock at Wildwood Park for the Performing Arts’ outdoor garden venue. Last but not least is AST’s attempt at connecting a younger generation with something that’s very old, yet relevant. Scallet said the group has yet to limit its children’s show to a Shakespearian production. This year is a first. Josh Rice will direct Shakespeare’s tale of magic and fantasy, “The Tempest.” Rice and his crew have adapted the play to a 45-minute version that is accessible for young audiences. “Arguably Shakespeare’s most magical and most musical play, the story and text repeatedly evoke feelings of wonder, awe, and imagination,” said Rice. Lights, sound, music, movement, character, color and costumes create illusions in the production “where audience members can suspend disbelief and forget what’s outside of themselves...”. “The Tempest” debuts June 20 at Reynolds Performance Hall and shows end June 30. “Each show in this season is a journey - for the character and I hope it’s a journey for the audience - that they’ll fall in love with the characters, and become engaged and delighted with the productions,” said Scallet. “That’s our goal with this series.”

FASHIONMISTA MEN’S GROOMING

ARTSHAVING

THE

BY DERRICK BARNHART

OF

As I was trying to figure out what to write about this month issue I came to decide to write about Men’s Grooming Tips. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Some men really seem to struggle with the art of shaving. So I’m going to give you some tips on how to create the perfect shave. It is so important to have a great shave going on and it is the first thing that people notice. It is all about being that well-groomed man. Creating the perfect Shave: Prepare: Shave after a shower, when the steam has softened your whiskers and your skin is slick and smooth. Start by massaging a nickel-size amount of pre-shave oil onto your beard. The smoother your face, the less likely it is that your razor will drag and create burn. Apply: A brush helps to lift the hairs and prevents ingrown hairs. Make sure your cream or gel is rich in glycerin. Spread it in a circular pattern across your face for even lifting and distribution. Shave: Never shave against the grain on your first pass. It’s the path to razor bumps and ingrown hairs. If you go against the grain all you doing is creating friction and discomfort. If you want to go closer, shave sideways from left to right and back again before finishing the grain. You’ll get the closer shave that way, but not all skin can handle it. Relieve: Rinse with cold water to close your pores. Then rub on a moisturizing after shave balm. The best ones have soothing ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, and tea-tree oil. Steer clear of those that containing alcohol which dries and tightens skin. A final trick “Swirl your shaving brush in baby powder and massage it onto your face.” Your face will be smooth as a baby’s bottom. Upgrade your electric shave: Try an electricshave solution from a brand like Lab Series Skincare for Men or Jack Black. It works similarly to pre-shave oil, creating a slick surface and lifting hairs, but comes in a lighter formulation that won’t clog your razor head.

Tips for Well Groomed Men Now I’m going to give you some more grooming tips that will make you embrace Sexy!! 1. Know your skin type. If you want to look after your skin you must know it well and choose appropriate men’s grooming products. Do you have oily skin? If so you should be using a light oil free moisturizer. Sensitive skin? Try to use fragrance free products when possible. 2. Get a regime. A simple everyday skin care regime is essential to help you look and feel your best. Keep it straightforward, face scrub before shaving and moisturizing after can make all the dif-

ference. 3. Trim your brows. Eyebrows should not be ignored. If you have bushy brows then do you best to keep them in check. Mono-brow is NOT a good look, so give it a quick shave when doing the rest of your face. 4. Drink water. It doesn’t get any easier than this. Water is proven to help keep your skin clear and healthy. You should drink at least 1.5 liters a day. 5. Face wash. Essential part of an everyday male grooming routine. You should cleanse with a face wash twice a day, in the morning and evening before you go to bed.

6. Cleansing wipes. Ideal as a quick fix if you’re skin gets oily in the afternoon then give it a quick cleanse with a wipe. 7. Face scrub. Face scrubs deep cleanse and help to remove dead skin cells. Most scrubs should be used once or twice a week, although some are now designed for everyday use. 8. Moisturize. Moisturizer is an important part of everyday grooming and should not be overlooked. If you have very dry skin you are better to spend a bit more on a top quality moisturizer designed specifically for dry skin and only use a small amount each day, rather than by a cheap one and use a lot. 17

ICONTECH E3: 2012

NINTENDO STEALS THE SHOW The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is returned to Los Angeles every year. E3 is the annual conference where most of the major video game news for the upcoming year and beyond is announced by the major console manufacturers and video game developers. This year is somewhat of a transitional year in gaming. Sony and Microsoft’s consoles are getting close to their end of life, but the companies aren’t ready to announce the next generation. That will probably come next year with a 2014 console release. On the other hand, Nintendo is getting the jump on the big two with the release of their WiiU console this year, but that was announced during last year’s E3. After all was said and done at this year’s conference there were no shockers, but the companies did have plenty of noteworthy announcements. It was certainly Nintendo that stole the show.

20

BY JAMES RYKEN Nintendo As the only one of the big three coming out with a new console, Nintendo took center stage at this year’s E3 convention with their press conference. The initial focus was on the console and the new controller (the WiiU Gamepad) that Nintendo is claiming will change gameplay in much the same way that their motion controlled Wii-mote controllers did on the original Wii. The WiiU console has finally caught Nintendo up with Microsoft and Sony spec-wise. It boasts high definition gaming for Nintendo for the first time and the processing power is said to be equal to the PlayStation 3. This is great news for fans of Nintendo’s first party games. Think of the new Gamepad controller as a combination game controller and tablet device. It actually looks very similar to an iPad. The controller itself contains a large screen that will be used extensively as a second screen during gaming. There’s no launch date or price set for the WiiU yet, but it’s expected to be released in the late fall in order to take advantage of the 2012 holiday shopping season. All the innovative technology in the world is great for demos and press conferences but it takes good games to drive a console’s success. Nintendo knows where its bread is buttered, though, as it announced that several first party games that have been stalwart franchises on the system will be coming soon for the WiiU. First and foremost was New Super Mario Bros. U. The Mario franchise is making the transition to HD and from what Nintendo showed during E3 this year, it looks fantastic. The gameplay has always been top notch, but now with the increased graphical and computing power of the console it really feels like a true next generation game. Another intriguing game from Nintendo is a new mini-game collection called NintoendoLand. It combines many of Ninetendo’s biggest franchises like Zelda, Mario, Luigi’s Mansion, and Donkey Kong among others into a collection of 12 smaller games organized into a big theme park. Like WiiSports for the Wii, it’s rumored that this could be included with the WiiU. Also announced was a new franchise, ZombiU. This Zombie killer is published by Ubisoft, but is exclusive to the WiiU and is getting praised as potentially being the best game to be unveiled at this year’s E3.

Microsoft The lynchpin of the Microsoft press conference this year was the unveiling of Halo 4, due out in November of this year. It’s a continuation of the Master Chief saga, and one of the last big games coming out for the Xbox360. The timing of its release is also interesting, as it is coming out just one week before Call of Duty. Microsoft also spent timing touting the upcoming Gears of War 4 game which should be released next spring and appears to be a prequel to the successful Gears trilogy.

HOT IN TECH

The other interesting aspect of the Microsoft presser was their Kinect integration. Two examples appeared in sports games. In one, FIFA 2013, the international best-selling soccer franchise, it’s possible to get a yellow card by being too harsh with the referee verbally. Apparently the Kinect’s voice recognition system will pick up on that, and the game will respond. Madden13 will get in the act by allowing voice activated audibles before the play occurs. Sounds like fun but that will depend on how this is actually implemented.

Sony Like Microsoft, Sony is expected to unveil the next iteration of the PlayStation at some point in the future for a 2014 release, so it’s press conference focused on the games coming out in the near future. The highlight was Sony unveiling more details and gameplay video of their new exclusive, The Last of Us. Set in a post-apocalyptic world drawn in realistic, vibrant colors, the game looks and feels great. It’s not for the weak of heart as it involves extreme violence. In the demo, the protagonist Joel annihilates anyone who gets in his path.

Hot VIDEO GAME

It was announced earlier this year, but one of the fun upcoming games for Sony is PlayStation AllStars Battle Royale, a cartoony fighting game involving many of Sony’s proprietary characters including Sackboy from Little Big Planet, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, and Kratos from God of War just to name a few. The game is in the same vein as Nintendo’s Smash Brothers and looks to be a lot of fun. Other highlights for Sony were in depth looks at God of War: Ascension that comes out next spring and Assassin’s Creed 3.

PinDrop. PinDrop is a GPS based application that allows you to drop virtual pins to mark locations that are important or interesting to you. You can create your own maps or use their crowd-sourced lists to find interesting restaurants or other hot spots. You can also drop a pin and share it with friends so they can find you. It’ll be interesting to see what other uses the developers can come up with for this app.

NCAA13. The annual college football franchise comes out this month. After Arkansas’ strong 2011, I can’t wait to fire the game up play with their high powered offense, which should be one of the most potent in the game.

BARCAMP CONWAY 2012 On June 2 at the College of Business at the University of Central Arkansas, the greatest conference known to man was held — BarCamp Conway 2012. So what is a BarCamp?

A BarCamp is a “un-conference” event where the attendees are in charge of what happens. This event is one day, free, and the attendees are the possible presenters. One hundred and fifty people from all over Arkansas, and quite a few from out of state, traveled to Conway this year to be a part of this amazing event. I’d like to share a few highlights of this event but before that I have to thank all of our sponsors. Without them we couldn’t make this event as fun and entertaining. Registration This year we did something a little bit different than BarCamp Conway 2010. In 2010 we had the attendees fill out a sticky note and stick it on the wall if they wanted to speak. We then collected them and luckily we had just the right amount to fill all the time spots. This year a mobile web site was built for voting. During registration, if you wanted to present you would enter your topic and description. Five iPads were set up that ran this site and the attendees voted on the top five topics they would like to hear. The top 20 were picked to speak. Photo Booth Little Photo Booth, who was one of our sponsors, brought a lot of entertainment this year. With an assortment of props people lined up to get their picture taken. Joe Murphy, owner of Little Photo Booth, also was one of our presenters demoing his 3-D printer. BarCamp Tour This year BarCamp Conway was added to the BarCamp Tour. The BarCamp Tour provided five new sponsors which paid for our after event and provided us some swag and with their exclusive BarCamp 2012 Pint Glass. It is an amazing feeling to see Conway on a list next to New York City and New Orleans!!! Overall, it was great to meet so many new people. Did you attend? What was your favorite part? I’d love to know. Please send me a tweet at @thelukeirvin and be sure to tag it with #barcampconway 22

ICONMUSIC CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

BY PRESTON PALMER

MUSIC BUSINESS IS CLOSE-KNIT In this business, it’s only natural that we get to rub shoulders with some very talented people. Some bring in instruments to be repaired or serviced, some are taking or giving lessons and some just stop by to see what’s going on at the studio. As we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of so many dedicated and talented artists, we wanted to take a moment to recognize a few. Adam Hambrick We’ve known Adam for quite a few years now, and the first thing that must be said is that he’s a stand-up guy. Always humble, always nice, always ready to hear your story. But as if that’s not enough, he’s a great musician and songwriter too! His latest album, “Fighting From The Ground”, is full of solid tracks. A little rock n’ roll, a little country, a bit of folk – there’s something for everyone! He is also a now a staff writer for EMI, which provides songs for radio, television, singers and bands all over the nation, so there’s a good chance you’ll be hearing a song that he’s worked on one way or another in the near future. Treva Blomquist We were given the pleasure of having Treva perform at our Open House event back in April, and she certainly didn’t disappoint! Hailing from Nashville, TN, Treva has been making a name for herself and crafting beautiful melodies long before we met her. Whether backed by a band or toting her acoustic guitar on a solo gig, her poise is undeniable and the songs carry themselves extremely well. She’s got a few shows in Arkansas coming up, be sure to catch one! Sleeper/Agent We’re indebted to good ‘ol serendipity for introducing us to Sleeper/Agent...serendipity and a Google search. The band’s lead guitarist Josh Martin stopped in before a Little Rock tour date last year, bringing us a 50th anniversary Gibson Les Paul that needed some TLC. They’ve seen some great success since then, touring with bands like Cage the Elephant and playing festivals such as Coachella. They’re a good dose of jump-around-have-fun rock n’ roll! belair. If you pay attention to the local music scene at all, it’s not unlikely that you’ve seen or heard of belair. These lads from Magnolia have been regulars at all the great venues in the Little Rock metro area, as well as a busy regional and national touring schedule. But when they’re home, we get to work on their guitars! They’re some of the nicest, most down-to-earth people we’ve met, and their tunes are just as likable and accessible as they are. The live show is energetic, the guitar sounds are crisp and clear, and the vocals will knock your socks off. Give ‘em a listen, you won’t be sorry! We could go on and on about the myriad of great musicians, singers, songwriters, and other gifted people that we’ve met in our endeavors, but we simply don’t have the time or space! We sincerely appreciate those who have shared their instruments, their art, and their time with us. We couldn’t do this without you! 23

“A Thousand Miles” Vanessa Carlton

Released: Feb. 12, 2002

The song gave Nelly his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom. It later won Best Male Rap Solo Performance, a brand new category at the time, at the Grammy Awards of 2003. The song was No. 3 in the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles Chart for 2002. In 2008, it was ranked No. 36 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. ... There were two music videos made for the single “Hot in Herre,” one which takes place in a dance club and has an alternative to the video and one which takes place in the St. Louis Arch. The alternative video was played in MTV Europe instead of the official one.

“Without Me” is one of Eminem’s most successful singles. The song reached the No. 1 position in many charts from various countries, including the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand for seven weeks. “Without Me” was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards of 2003 (losing to Norah Jones’ “Don’t Know Why”), being Eminem’s first song to receive a Grammy nomination in a major category. It also received a nomination for Best Male Rap Solo Performance but lost as well to the song “Hot in Herre” by rapper Nelly. In 2009, the song was honored by Pitchfork Media as the 251st greatest song of the 2000s. The song was the 69th bestselling single of the 2000s in UK.

When “The Middle” was released, the success of the album and the band was dependent on the single breaking through. By the end of 2001, the song had reached the top of the Billboard modern rock track charts. The song was starting to cross over to Top 40 radio resulting in it reaching a peak of No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also charted in the UK reaching a peak of No. 26 in 2002. The band toured extensively behind the album with Weezer, Tenacious D, Green Day, Blink-182 and the Vans Warped Tour, as well as the band’s own headlining tour. “The Middle” was the most commercially successful single released from the album Bleed American.

“Hero” was the result of a collaboration between Kroeger and Scott. Scott told Yahoo!’s entertainment news service LAUNCH, “(Kroeger) had the idea for the song ‘Hero,’ so I came up to Vancouver and met him. He pitched me the idea, and I thought that was pretty dope. So we sort of tweaked it, together, laid down some harmonies on it and played everything from congas to acoustics on it.” Matt Cameron, who played drums on the track, did not appear in the music video and cited “family issues” as the reason. He was replaced with Our Lady Peace drummer Jeremy Taggart. Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell was originally picked to play the solo but pulled out because he was concentrating on his solo album.

“A Thousand Miles” is a piano-driven pop song supported by a string orchestral arrangement, in which its protagonist (Carlton) pines for her lover, from whom she has been separated. Carlton said she wrote the song about her grandfather who passed away a while before. She has also called the song, “a combination of reality and fantasy. It’s about a love that so consumes you that you do anything for it. That’s how I felt at that time.” ... The video begins with Carlton going into her garage and throwing a sheet off her piano. She starts playing and the song begins. While she’s playing, the piano starts moving outside near a parade downtown, joggers out on the road, through the beach and other parts of the city.

A GOODBYE TO ICONS No matter the age, losing a member of the musical family is always hard, and last month saw two icons taken far too soon, both suffering from the same illness. Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of the pioneer hip-hop group Beastie Boys, lost his battle with throat cancer at the age of 47. The rapper had a cool demeanor, a raspy voice with a smooth delivery, and he elevated the group past childish exploits, something rarely seen in that world. They were a rap group dedicated to positivity without sounding like wusses. Yauch’s bandmate, Adam Horowitz, called him “the 30

leader,” and pleasing him was paramount. “I wrote the lyrics for the song ‘Gratitude,’ and Adam was like, ‘I really like that,’” Horowitz told Rolling Stone magazine. “It made me happy and proud that I had made him happy.” Levon Helm, born in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, was 24 years older than Yauch, but his loss was just as devastating. Helm was the Southern soul of The Band. Without Helm, The Band was just a bunch of Canadians trying to grasp the roots of the folk-rock move-

“Complicated” Avril Lavigne

“Oh Boy” Cam’ron

“I Need a Girl” P. Diddy

“Dilemma” Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland

“I’m Gonna Be Alright” Jennifer Lopez featuring Nas

Released: May 14, 2002 Certification: 2x Platinum

Released: April 2, 2002 Certification: Platinum

Released: Feb. 26, 2002

Released: June 25, 2002 Certification: Platinum

Released: July 1, 2002

“Complicated” is a song about how people can be fake. Lavigne said about the song: “People sometimes bother me how they’re not real and how they’re just, like, putting on a face and being two-faced.” Lavigne stated that she experienced this with both boyfriends and female friends. ... The video, directed by The Malloys, starts with Lavigne asking her bandmates if they want to “crash” the mall. They respond with enthusiasm, and skateboard there. The video features Lavigne and the band harassing shoppers and employees, generally causing havoc around the mall. The video was shot at Eagle Rock Plaza, Los Angeles, in two days. During the shooting, the mall remained open.

“Oh Boy” is the title of a No. 1, Grammy nominated Hip Hop single by rapper Cam’ron from his album Come Home with Me. It features rapper Juelz Santana. The song samples “I’m Going Down” by Rose Royce. It held the No. 1 spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles for five weeks straight. It also held the No. 1 spot on the Hot Rap Tracks. It peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard Hot 100. The song is produced by Just Blaze who originally made the song for Memphis Bleek. The song ranked 89th on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

“I Need a Girl (Part One)” is a single by American rapper P. Diddy with the collaboration of Usher and Loon from the album We Invented the Remix. Along with “I Need a Girl (Part Two)”, P. Diddy achieved a rare occurrence by having two parts of a song become chart hits. Part One peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. It also charted on the UK Singles Chart at No. 4.

It is the most successful song of Nelly’s career, giving him his first No. 1 single in many countries, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland. “Dilemma” is the most successful single of Rowland’s career also, alongside the worldwide dance hit “When Love Takes Over”. It’s not only Kelly’s most successful solo single in the US, but also in the UK with 800,000 copies sold as of November 2011. The single became a hit in the late summer/early fall of 2002 in the US. Before “Hot In Herre” had even peaked on the charts, radio stations already began playing “Dilemma” in July 2002.

Controversy over the radio version versus the album version of “I’m Gonna Be Alright” sparked tension between then-friends 50 Cent and Nas. Lopez and Epic Records decided it would be better to have Nas for the radio version due to his popularity on the music charts. This however apparently upset 50 Cent, causing him to feel betrayed by Nas. At the time of the single release, 50 Cent was still upcoming and pretty much unknown to artists in mainstream music. According to rumors, 50 Cent holds no hard feelings toward Lopez, but toward Nas, and the two have a beef over this situation. According to Lopez’s management, the switch was purely business.

BY RICKY DUKE ment in the late 1960s. With Helm, they grooved better than anyone else. His voice was also raspy, but he had more driving energy singing from behind the drum kit.

than half his age. Yauch took the rap art form, traditionally meant for teenagers, and stayed relevant into his late 40’s.

Listening to “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” or “Ophelia,” one could understand how irreplaceable he was and is. His recent midnight ramble sessions in Woodstock, New York, are the stuff of legend, and although they may continue, they will be just a shell of all other shows.

Music, especially pop and rock music, will always keep us young, no matter how old we get. It is the window to how great the world can be. No matter how responsible and mature we become, listening to “So Watcha Want” by Beastie Boys or “Don’t Do It” by The Band will always tap into our inner-teenager. And we all need that sometimes.

While Helm and Yauch shared untimely deaths, they also shared an ability to stay young through music. Even at 71, Helm was able to rock with musicians less

Thanks to Helm and Yauch for always reminding us that through their music.
