ICONRELATIONSHIPS LEAP OF FAITH

THE MARRIAGE GAMBLE ‘I DO’ ... OR ‘I DON’T’ Deciding to marry may appear like a 50/50 gamble on happiness or disaster if a person does not know what to look for in a partner. Insights from local marriage counselors and “America’s Marriage Doctor” Jacqueline Del Rosario can help predict whether that union will last. Del Rosario said anyone considering marriage should ask themselves whether they and their partner share the same core morals and values. “After all, how can two people travel together and enjoy the journey unless they are heading in the same direction and agree on how they will get there?” she said. Mike Ortner, an elder at New Life Church in Conway who provides marriage counseling and mentoring on a volunteer basis, agreed. “Do you agree on the fundamentals, your core beliefs?” he asked. “There are lots of things that could cause issues in a marriage. It could even be one is Catholic and one is Protestant. That can cause a lot of issues in a marriage. Those are things you want to try to get settled before you get married. To marry a person with the idea that you can change them because you’re marrying them is a terrible idea. It rarely works out.” Del Rosario said a couple should balance one another in temperament. Perhaps one is outgoing and the other shy. However, pay attention to whether you are just too different, she warned. She also noted both partners must be committed to work toward a strong relationship. “With respect to relationships, committing to always fine-tuning and bettering it is the glue that holds it all together. If your partner is not engaged in making the effort now, it is unlikely to change once you are married. In fact, the lack of effort and engagement could get even worse as complacency sets in,” she said. Additionally, Del Rosario said, couples who hope to make a successful marriage should learn to speak one another’s “love language.” Each partner needs to understand what makes the other feel emotionally fulfilled. Ortner commented, “If a man’s need is affirmation, he assumes that because that’s what he needs and what makes him feel great, that’s what his wife needs and will make her feel great. So he spills affirmation all over her. If he doesn’t get a positive response, he feels frustrated. Unless you figure out the needs of your wife or husband, that person will never feel fulfilled. Her need might be affection. Affirmation doesn’t do anything for that.” He compared trying to meet an emotional need with the wrong action to filling up a diesel engine with gasoline. 14

BY RACHEL PARKER DICKERSON

15

“The lack of education is one of the biggest issues in marriage today,” Ortner said. “Unless you have a good marriage to relate to, like your parents had a good marriage and they taught you, or you had some mentoring, or you took it on yourself to get some really good books and CDs, then you’re basically shooting in the dark at knowing what to do when it comes to being a husband or wife. Every couple we’ve ever met with literally had no idea.” Del Rosario said couples must be able to work together to solve problems to find “mutually felt resolution.” “Marital life is filled with bumps, twists and turns, so having a partner that works well with you to work through conflict minimizes the stress on the relationship,” she said. “This certainly doesn’t mean you can or should enter marriage with

UNLESS YOU FIGURE OUT THE NEEDS OF YOUR WIFE OR HUSBAND, THAT PERSON WILL NEVER FEEL FULFILLED. HER NEED MIGHT BE AFFECTION. AFFIRMATION DOESN’T DO ANYTHING FOR THAT.

-MIKE ORTNER, NEW LIFE CHURCH

the intent to change the other person, and don’t change who you are simply to keep the peace.” Ask yourself whether you are attracted to the person, Del Rosario said. She added you should “genuinely like who your partner is as a person.” A relationship should be based on a solid friendship, she said. Ortner said above all else, look for inner peace when deciding whether to marry a person. Something that doesn’t feel quite right should not be ignored. Dr. Quentin Washispack, senior staff member at New Life Church, said, “When making that decision about who to marry, it is important to wed someone you can’t live without. You will spend more time with your marriage partner than anyone else in your lifetime. Don’t marry someone you can live with. Marry someone you can’t live without.” Washispack added while loving feelings may come and go the vows a couple makes on their wedding day are for a lifetime.

16

“There is nothing in these wedding vows that indicates if one does not ‘feel in love’ anymore, he or she can get out of marriage. Remember you are making a lifetime commitment,” he said.

BY JACQUELINE DEL ROSARIO, AMERICA’S MARRIAGE DOCTOR

DELIGHT OR DOOM: SEVEN SIGNS YOU’VE FOUND THE ‘RIGHT’ MARRIAGE MATE You’ve invested a lot of time, effort and emotional energy in your relationship. Things are good, and you think you’ve found “the one” — that marriage-worthy person you’re prepared to spend the rest of your life with for better or for worse. But, before you say “I do” and turn this relationship into a life-long commitment, first determine if you and your mate are compatible in key areas proven to foster happy, healthy marriages that go the distance. Here are 7 signs to help you best assess if your relationship will result in delightful wedded bliss, or if doom and gloom is the more likely outcome. This Marriage Compatibility Checklist will help you analyze the relationship hand you’ve been dealt so you can hold ‘em or fold ‘em!

1.

You are like-minded. While you don’t have to be exactly the same (let’s face it, that would be boring), you do need to have congruent core morals and values. These shape expectations and direction and are essential ingredients of a resilient marriage. After all, how can two people travel together, and enjoy the journey, unless they are heading in the same direction and agree on how they will get there? Are you on the same pathway in terms of wants, needs and desires or are you headed down opposite roads?

2.

Your temperament balances one another. One of you may be an extravert, and the other an introvert. One a Type A and the other more passive. While these glaring differences may lead to conflict at times, these opposing temperaments often bring balance. If you are the Yin to your mate’s Yang or vice versa, you will better your chances of achieving a harmonious relationship. But, bear in mind these differing character traits should serve to create a well-rounded whole relationship. Beware if your respective tendencies are just too different to ever make the puzzle pieces fit.

3.

You are both committed to do the work. The Beatles got it wrong — love is NOT all you need. Effort and work is necessary to cultivate a strong and satisfying relationship for the long-term. Rewards rarely come by just “phoning it in”; rather, dividends are realized when you work hard at something with forethought, intention and resolve. With respect to relationships, committing to always fine-tuning and bettering it is the glue that holds it all together. If your partner is not engaged in making the effort now, it is unlikely to change once you are married. In fact, the lack of effort and engagement could get even worse as complacency sets in.

4.

You are able to speak your partner’s “love language.” When two people with different dialects try to communicate, it is often confusing, frustrating and downright futile. Neither person understands what the other is trying to say. The same holds true in a marriage where each partner has their own “love language” — those romantic, sexual and emotional needs that make each individual feel fulfilled. Is your mate taking the time to learn and speak your love language, and are you interested in speaking theirs — or is such emotional gratification already being lost in translation?

5.

You are able to work together to resolve problems. This is when the rubber meets the road. Bottom line: you have to be able to work through conflict to find mutually felt resolution in a healthy and productive manner. Marital life is filled with bumps, twists and turns, so having a partner that works well with you to work through conflict minimizes the stress on the relationship. This certainly doesn’t mean you can or should enter marriage with the intent to change the other person, and don’t change who YOU are simply to keep the peace. The key is to be true to yourself while learning when and how to compromise so that you can effectively work through problems without one or the other feeling resentful. If this isn’t possible now, take pause.

6.

You are attracted to them. Do you remember that initial spark between the two of you? There is a special chemistry that is electrifying when there is a true physical attraction. As your relationship matures, daily life issues dominate your attention and bodies age, this fundamental human attraction can keep those fires burning between the two of you — both physically and emotionally. Every fire will burn itself out if not fueled, so assess if the flames are being stoked now well before the wedding day.

7.

You genuinely like who your partner is as a person. A relationship must be based upon a solid friendship that can stand the test of time. You genuinely enjoy each other’s company and prefer to spend time together rather than alone or with others. You should like the person as much as you love them. Respect, admiration and honor are enduring traits that remain even as passion ebbs and flows over time. Can you truly say that your mate is your best friend? Would your partner say that about you? This simple seven-item checklist can help you determine if your relationship has happy marriage potential for the long haul. Just like any other type of investment, it’s always wise to conduct a SWOT analysis to identify intrinsic qualities (strengths and weaknesses) that may help or hinder your marital life as well as external issues (opportunities and threats) that may assist or adversely impact your happily ever after. “America’s Marriage Doctor” Jacqueline Del Rosario is President and CEO of Recapturing the Vision International, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy marriages and family strengthening. Also a published author, speaker and nationally-regarded media personality, Dr. Del Rosario has been a certified pre- and post-marital counselor for more than 20 years. Her cutting-edge series, “Marriage Solutions and The Marital Constitution,” helps couples successfully work through problems and find healthy solutions. She has two children and currently resides in Miami, Fla., with her husband of more than 20 years. Dr. Del Rosario may be reached online at www.doctordelrosario.com. 17

ICONTECH 2012

18

PREDICTIONS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD The tech industry is constantly evolving, and it’s sometimes tough to keep up with the latest developments and what’s next on the horizon. As the new year begins, these are my predictions for what we’ll be talking about tech-wise in 2012. Apple’s got something up its sleeve After Steve Jobs’ untimely passing last October, many people have been questioning whether Apple will continue to be on the cutting edge as it has been for the past decade. In the Steve Jobs biography that came out shortly after his death, it was strongly hinted that Jobs had been working on an integrated television with the Apple spin. What that actually means, I’m not sure, but Jobs believed it would be a game changer in the television industry. It’s been widely speculated that the Apple TV (different than the currently available ‘Apple TV’ set top box streaming device) would be a television set that was completely integrated with your network and all of your iTunes content. While all of this is available on the Apple TV set top box, my guess is that an easy-to-use interface and instant accessibility to videos, music, pictures and Internet streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix and Apple’s own video store will be key elements to the TV. Another exciting rumor is that when Steve Jobs said “I’ve cracked it” in relation to the key to Apple TV, he meant that it would be voice controlled in a similar way that the iPhone 4S is with Siri. Siri Gets Company The new feature everybody is talking about on the iPhone 4S is Siri, the voice controlled “personal assistant” that users have been having fun with for the past few months. Siri can check the weather for you, read your email, set up appointments and search the Internet among other things. While certainly not the first voice-control solution out there (Android has had a robust voice-control system in place for a few years), Apple’s Siri is the first to really catch on with the public. Because of Siri’s popularity I’d venture a guess that we’ll be seeing more and more voice-control systems becoming more prominent on everything from phones to tablets to other appliances such as TVs (as mentioned above, the forthcoming Apple TV is rumored to be heavily Siri driven), GPS units, and I’m sure a few others that will catch us by surprise. The Next Generation of Video Game Consoles is Announced It doesn’t seem that long ago, but it’s been more than six years since the Xbox 360 was released and more than five years since the Playstation3 came out. Time flies while you’re having fun (or saving the world from terrorists or aliens)! I believe it’s inevitable that both Microsoft and Sony unveil plans to release the latest editions of their consoles during 2012, most likely at E3, the huge video gaming conference that occurs in June. The two companies have been tight-lipped about their plans for upcoming consoles, so it’s really hard to say what features they might include that aren’t already present on the current versions. The games today look so good and play so well, it’s hard to pinpoint any one or two spots where there’s huge room for improvement. At some point, I’d expect that games will no longer be available on disk, that all media would be virtual, but I don’t expect that to happen with the next generation. Emergence of the Mobile Wallet Late in 2011, Google released an interesting video that displayed the potential of a mobile wallet application, in this case, Google Wallet, on an Android phone. The concept is really pretty simple — anything that you might keep in your wallet would be stored electronically in a mobile device. This could include, but isn’t limited to, credit and debit cards, tickets to sporting events or movies, driver’s license information, gift cards, coupons, etc. The capability for all of this currently exists, but retailers will need to install the technology to read the electronic wallet information. In addition, the mobile wallet providers will need to demonstrate that the product offering is secure and that privacy and fraud won’t become an issue. If these things happen in 2012, I’d look for this to really start to emerge toward the end of the year.

WHAT’S HOT IN TECH

BY JAMES RYKEN

Hot Tech Conference – CES 2012 The annual Consumer Electronics Show takes place in early January each year in Las Vegas. All of the major tech/electronics companies, as well as hundreds of thousands of convention goers, gather to see what’s on the horizon in the consumer electronics industry. The show usually sets the tone for what’s coming up in electronics each year. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s new for 2012.

Hot Website – theverge.com. New website, theverge.com, is a magazine style that merges all of the technology news you’d be interested in with an appealing format. Definitely put The Verge on your list of sites to check out once a week or so.

Hot Game – NBA 2K12. Now that the lockout is over, it’s time to ramp up the 2012 NBA season. When it was released last year, NBA 2K11, was universally praised as the best sports videogame of all time. This year’s version has improved on that and also has added a slew of historical teams that are a ton of fun to play with. A cool wrinkle when playing the historical teams is that the production value matches that team’s era, so if you’re playing with the 60’s Celtics, expect black and white and a single camera tv style.

ONE READER ASKED IF IT WAS REALLY CHRISTIAN FICTION. I DON’T

BY RACHEL PARKER DICKERSON

Local author Kent Schreiber has been picked up by a publisher with his latest novel, “Wickflicker.” Under his pseudonym, Teric Darken, Schreiber has self-published two novels in the past two years through West Bow Press. “Wickflicker” caught the attention of Treasure Line Publishing. The latest novel is a departure from his self-published works, Schreiber said. True to his style, it draws on the supernatural and allegorical, he said. However, while his work has been described as Christian fiction, he said he did not write “Wickflicker” for Christians. “Coming from the walk I have in life, being a musician and playing in a lot of bars and clubs, being an motorcyclist and being in the motorcycling community, I’ve seen a lot of people who’ve done a lot of living in the hedonistic lifestyle. Those are good people, but that is a lifestyle that is more of a mere existence,” he said. “The lifestyle I’ve seen my friends live is killing them, in a way. “‘Wickflicker’ addresses the topic of hedonism. An author, in order to be credible, you have to keep the story as plausible and as real as possible. There is some language in here that is unsavory. There are some scenes that are steamy or edgy. I didn’t pull many punches or mince many words.” He said people likely to shop in a Christian bookstore might have difficulty seeing the forest for the trees in “Wickflicker.” “One reader asked if it was really Christian fiction,” he said. “I don’t label my books. I let the readers do that for me. My answer to that is this: The book starts out as a secular book, and by the book’s end, it winds up in a Christian world view. “This was written primarily for my friends who are out there in that ‘do what thou wilt’ lifestyle that is ending up hurting them. By scripting it genuinely in word and action, I’m letting them know I can relate. I’ve been there in another time in my life. They are more likely to listen to you if you keep it plausible and genuine. Then, if you are offering advice or perhaps a warning, they are willing to listen to what you have to say. By your language, they see that you’re not being preachy.” He said the first scene in the novel takes place at a college end-of-semester bash with lots of “sex, drugs and rock-n-roll.” “You gotta show you know what you’re talking about,” he said. “My target audience is those who won’t darken the doors of a church, because those are the people who I’ve hung out with in life.” On the other side of the spectrum, Schreiber has spent some time outside the dark realm of Teric Darken to write a lighthearted children’s book, which he will publish under his given name. “I wanted to write something for my children. In my mind, I took

all the neat, crazy, wonderful, wild things I experienced as a child. Wholesome things. Some of it is mischievous, but it’s all innocent children’s fun. Like times when I remember sledding down a hill and I couldn’t get my sled to stop … times when my grandma was visiting and my pet hermit crab got loose … written through the eyes of kids. It’s a young readers’ book appealing to ages 6-12. “I’ve just recounted a lot of personal stories and told them through the eyes of characters representative of my daughters.” The book is titled “The Sisterly Shenanigans of Doopie Piper and Sissy Pants (and other Zany Yarns).” Schreiber said, “I loved it. I have plans to do that more. It’s a nice break from my other stuff. There’s a time and a purpose for everything. Right now I’m in a different season. It’s a little more light-hearted. It’s good to expand.” He said he does write quite a bit and has numerous ideas, beginning manuscripts and story treatments he is working on. “I think it’s evident I’m honing my craft. I am and always will be a work in progress. The journey of authorship is never-ending until your last breath. I believe with each story I just get better, because it’s an opportunity to develop yourself and research things and write about your findings.”

Architect and artist Steve Hurd has donated several of his works to Art, Pray, Love, an event at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church that will raise funds for the church’s medical mission to Guatemala in April. Becky Harris photo.

Candles galore will help to light the third annual Art, Pray, Love art show and sale on Jan. 28, a benefit for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s Guatemala medical mission slated for April 14-22. The theme of the event is “Touching hearts, changing lives.” About 30 artists have contributed recent works that will be sold in a silent auction from 6-9 p.m. Other works will include prints from an estate left to the church. The candles will be necessary for the event that reaches across Prince Street from the church’s parish hall into the Ledbetter House, an 1899 historic home bought by the church last year for just such events. Lighting and warmth for the tables of hors d’oeuvres and wine will be supplemented by electric torcheries and space heaters.

24

The house is in a state of renovation with walls stripped to the bead board and “modern” dropped ceilings removed to reveal the old bones of the home. Art and refreshments will also be served in the church parish hall across the street. There will be music at both locations. Some of the artists who have committed to exhibit and sell their works to benefit the Guatemalan medical mission are Sheila Parsons, Chris Massingill, Steve Hurd, Lynita Langley-Ware, Tina Lake, Tim O’Brien, Susan Peterson, Sally Pratt, Joanne Stevens, Debbie Steward, Ree Walker and others. Tickets are $25 for individuals and $45 for couples. For ticket information, contact the church office at 925 Mitchell St., (501) 329-8174.

Prints that were gifts from an estate will be among the art on display at Art, Pray, Love, 6-9 p.m. on Jan. 28.

ICONFASHION CAMERON KING

BY RACHEL PARKER DICKERSON

Artfully URBAN Conway native Cameron King is breaking into fashion and art in the Miami area with her business Artfully Urban.

A 2010 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas with a degree in fine arts, King has had a love of art and fashion as long as she can remember. When heartache and difficulty threatened her success, she found the strength to launch her quickly growing business. “Artfully Urban is a mix of revamped urban, body chains and art,” King said. “I go to different stores or people’s houses when they have estate sales, get their very old vintage clothing and revamp it, whether it’s changing the hemline or putting a new design in the back.” Chain Reaction, her line of body chains, takes necklaces and bracelets to a new level. The line features pieces for hands, arms, neck and shoulders. She also creates paintings, drawings, sculptures, portraits, etc. She said she only started drawing about five years ago, when she started studying fine arts and discovered she could do it. “I’ve always liked art and been into it, but I just thought (drawing) was my mom and my brother’s thing,” she said.

Cameron King of Conway, modeling her own design.

She continued, “I’ve always been into fashion. When I was little, I used to get into trouble for cutting up my own clothes because I didn’t want to look like everyone else. I would steal scissors and design it. When I was older I taught myself to use the sewing machine.”

When she was still playing with dolls, she used her mother’s old T-shirts to design outfits for her dolls. She also had much exposure to art in her childhood, because her mother took her to art museums. When she was a teenager, she was named Best Dressed by “Seventeen.” In college, she designed her own clothes for special occasions.

“I’ve always been in the art world, sewing, all of it,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be in a creative field or be a fashion designer. When you’re in school and you see your friends graduating and they all get a job as a waitress … it started bringing my morale down.” She began to consider getting a degree in computer science, believing she could learn more marketable skills and have career success faster than what she had seen in her friends’ lives. Then tragedy struck. During her junior year, she began having health issues. A sudden symptom left her without the ability to control her legs at times. The following year, both her grandfather and her mother died. “So many bad things happened right before I was supposed to be graduating. I basically decided how short life was and to just go ahead and do it, and if it failed, I would figure out a plan for after that. I told myself it would work out, and so far it has.” Through illness and mourning, she trudged on through her final semester and graduation. In July 2010, she moved to Temberoke Pines, Fla., to be near her father and other family members. “I took a couple of months and literally slept. 31

The last few months of college were the worst time of my life. I had to get myself together first. To graduate, I had to push myself through so much. “I decided I was ready to start this business and meet people down here. It sounds weird, but I just did it. I didn’t start out with a lot of money. I just used what I had and went from there.” Her fashion line, eVilo, and her art collection, eIram, are named in memory of her mother. The seemingly nonsense words are her mother’s first and middle names spelled backwards — Olive Marie. Through social networking, blogs and word-of-mouth, King’s merchandise is making its way into the hands of buyers, including some as far

away as Australia and New Zealand, she said. In the near future, King will marry Jerene Makia, whom she met at UCA. “He stood by me through everything, even when he thought my legs weren’t going to work anymore,” she said. King said she and her future husband will move to Dallas, where she plans to open a storefront. She has been imagining it for a few years. She said she might like to invite new artists who are just starting out to put their merchandise in the store. “I just like to see other people do well also,” she said. ICONAPPS PATH 2.0

TECH TALK Check out Icon’s latest video with Luke Irvin on Foursquare. BY LUKE IRVIN // IRVIN MEDIA // @irvinmedia

WATCH OUT FACEBOOK

I mentioned Path before in the September issue, but their latest release is so amazing I have to write about it. At the end of November, Path 2.0 was released “wowing” the tech community.

Since using Path 2.0 I have been able to keep track of how often I sleep each night, keep track of where I normally go to eat and shop, take pictures or videos of things I want to remember and see some of the trending songs me and my friends listen to.

Path has completely set the bar for UX/UI (User Experience, User Interface) to a whole new level. All major functionality for this app has been placed into one button, with a breathtaking animation for displaying the function options.

Ultimately this app could help people live a happier and healthier life. What makes Path so great is the exclusivity. I don’t have to worry about sharing specific things of what goes on in my life with everyone, though there is the option to share via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare if a user would like, but only the people who matter to me the most.

For a quick recap, Path was originally built as a social app to share pictures and videos with only 50 of your closest friends and family. Path has grown this idea based off one-on-one interviews with users of the app into a personal journal, a way to keep up with things you do in your everyday life, from when you go to sleep, when you wake up, what songs you listen too, where you go eat or shop and thoughts you have. Path also has decided to follow the idea of Dunbar’s Number, the number of social friendships we really maintain. Dunbar believed we can only maintain 150 friendships. Anything above this is just too much for us to handle. In Path 2.0 you can now share your path with 150 people that can be added via Facebook, your phone’s contact list or just by searching for their name.

I believe a lot of the elements of this app should worry Facebook. Think about it, the more friends you accept, the less you share. This may not mean a lot to everyday users of social media, but if you are an entrepreneur, a brand or a business this is very important. Where am I going with this? Facebook fan pages. I’ve mentioned the Dunbar Number, but let’s talk about a new number coined by entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, the Commercial Dunbar Number. How many Fan Pages do you like? Five? 100? But which ones do you actually interact with? The brands that figure out how to penetrate and can become one of these Commercial Dunbar Numbers to connect with users emotionally will succeed in business. In the online social world we live in, this is the way marketing is going to be viewed in the 2015 world. 33

The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission presents “A Day of Service” on Monday, Jan. 16, at Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall in Conway at 12:30 p.m.

The Arkansas MLK Commission will bring its statewide event “A Day Of Service, Not A Day Off” to the campus of the University of Central Arkansas, which will be the centerpiece of a variety of events in Conway honoring the civil rights leader. The ceremony at the Reynolds Performance Hall will begin at noon and will feature Martin Luther King Jr. Commissioner Cornell Maltbia, pastor of True Holiness Saints Center in Conway, as the keynote speaker. “The city of Conway has done a tremendous job over the past 10 years honoring this day, and we hope that the event at UCA just adds to this special day,” Maltbia said. “We really look at it as an enhancement to what is already being done here.” —Ricky Duke, Log Cabin Democrat

“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
