BEST OF THE BEST 2014

Each year, Women’s, Inc. polls our readers to determine your local favorites in various categories. The votes are in, and we are pleased to highlight a selection of the winners!

Austin Miller (Executive Chef ), Suzanne Hall (owner), and Michael Manley (Manager)

On my birthday

TAKE ME TO DINNER AT By Jennifer Stanley Photos by Brandy Strain Our readers have spoken, and the winner of “On my birthday, take me to dinner at…” is Pasta Grill of downtown Conway! The successful restaurant is owned by Suzanne and Wes Hall and was opened in October 2012. Of the decision to establish Pasta Grill, Suzanne shares, “We looked at a lot of buildings in several different areas before we settled on downtown Conway. We always pray and trust that God will lead us where we need to go and He always does. We love being a part of historic downtown areas. Our very first restaurant, in 1994, was in the oldest building in downtown Russellville.” In restoring the Conway location, Suzanne’s

goal was to preserve the integrity of the original. “The worn floors, crumbling brick, and architectural details are so beautiful, and we can’t replicate that. The Conway building was small but quaint, and we believed it would be a warm and intimate setting for gathering and dining as well as having a historical ambiance.” Being restaurateurs was not in Wes and Suzanne’s original plans. The couple married in 1992, and he intended to be an optometrist, earning a degree in biology From UALR. Suzanne received her degree in

criminal law from ASU, and then became certified as a paralegal with an emphasis on corporate law. “It’s interesting how we think we know where we are going in life, but I believe sometimes God has other plans. Better plans,” she shares. A few months after graduating from college, the couple purchased their first restaurant. That was 20 years - and five restaurants - ago. Pasta Grill is the couple’s sixth restaurant, and the other five are still operating today, each under independent ownership. “We had no experience at all

in the food industry, but we were willing to work hard and learn. We believe this is what God put in our hearts to do, and He has been with us every step of the way. Being a chef and restaurateur has become my passion and is one of the greatest blessings of my life. I love what I do, and it is a joy to get to come to work at Pasta Grill,” Suzanne enthuses. Experimenting and creating in the kitchen are among her passions. “It is where I can unwind and have fun,” she shares. Among Pasta Grill’s most successful dishes are their shrimp and grits, southern most pasta, shrimp New Orleans, steaks, prime rib, and homemade lasagna. “We love using fresh ingredients and making everything from scratch. There are so many dining choices in Conway and nearby, we understand every time someone chooses to dine with us it is a gift and an honor. We take that seriously. We have been so blessed, and we want to give back through exceptional service and by making each dish the best we can, for every customer, every time,” adds Suzanne. Pasta Grill employs approximately 40 people. “We are a team, and everyone is so important. God chose to let people who believe be His hands and feet in the world, and at Pasta Grill we know in the same way it takes every one of us working together and doing our part to serve our customers well. We have an awesome dishwasher, Jesus Navarette, and an amazing prep and lead team that are the backbone of Pasta Grill. We have a wonderful manager, Michael Manley. He is the man behind our organization and staffing, and he is devoted to excellence; he loves to work with and serve our customers and our staff as well. Our executive chef is Austin Miller, the culinary creativeness behind so much of what we serve and who we are as a restaurant. There are two very special people who make the food we serve fresh every day; Tressa Burnside and Gilberto Molina have been part of Pasta Grill since day one, and we are so thankful to have them and the rest of our wonderful staff.” Suzanne also cites the good working relationship between the employees as a reason for their continued success. Suzanne and Wes love to receive feedback on dishes. “When people say, ‘Wow! That is delicious!’ that is my reward. I want people to know how thankful we are for them by how well we serve them. Our customers are so valuable, and they deserve that.” The couple strives to implement customer suggestions when possible and often add dishes to their menu as a result of feedback. Of their “Best Of” win, Suzanne says, “We know people are busy with family and work, and when they take time to vote for us we are humbled and so grateful. It is truly a blessing to be part of this community, and we want to say thank you for supporting Pasta Grill.” WWW.WOMENSINC.NET 7

Dr. Sarah Davis and Dr. Susan DeBlack

I only have eyes for my favorite

local optometrist

Dr. Susan DeBlack! By Jennifer Stanley Photos by Brandy Strain Dr. Susan DeBlack is thrilled to be the winner of Women’s Inc.’s favorite local optometrist! Dr. DeBlack is a graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry. She founded DeBlack Eye Care, located in West Conway, in 2006. Dr. Sarah Davis joined the practice in 2013. Dr. Davis received her optometric education at Northeastern State University College of Optometry in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Upon Dr. Davis’ arrival, the practice underwent extensive remodeling and greatly expanded its eyewear selection. They continue to embrace technology and update equipment, which enables the clinic to better diagnose and treat eye

conditions. DeBlack Eye Care is fortunate to have a knowledgeable, friendly staff, led by office manager, Melissa Manning. Melissa is a licensed optician with over 20 years of optical experience. The staff also includes several other licensed opticians who take the time necessary to educate patients on new technologically advanced lens designs and to help patients select the best options for their specific visual needs. They also help patients select from a wide variety of frame collections to find their best fit and look. Drs. DeBlack and Davis also have a special interest in working with children. “It has been estimated that 80 percent of the learning a child does occurs through his or her eyes. We want to make sure every child has the best possible vision, so they can learn and perform to their full potential,” they share. The doctors and staff of DeBlack Eye Care focus on community involvement and look for ways to make a difference in the lives their patients and others. Dr. Davis has served on two medical mission trips to Roatan, Honduras, with Volunteer Optom-

etric Services to Humanity. More than 900 patients were cared for on each trip. The volunteer doctors provided desperately needed prescription eyewear and treated a wide range of eye diseases. In addition, Dr. DeBlack and several staff members have volunteered at Shepherd’s Hope Eye Clinic in Little Rock, which provides eye examinations and glasses to those unable to afford eye care. They have also participated in the Special Olympics Arkansas Healthy Athletes program for several years. DeBlack Eye Care is also very involved in a program called Optometry Giving Sight. More than 600 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to the eye examination and/or glasses they need. The practice celebrates World Sight Day each year and makes a donation for each frame sold during the month of October. Since 2008, the clinic has helped provide exams and glasses for over 400 individuals worldwide. “For these people, the gift of sight can make the difference between a life of poverty and a life of opportunity.” WWW.WOMENSINC.NET 9

BEAUTY

Micro needling is all the buzz

By Angela Jackson

M

icro needling is the buzz right now in skin care. I have spent the last year researching devices to offer at our facility. I decided on the Dermatude META therapy and the results have been incredible. Here is some information I have found on this age management treatment.

What is META therapy? Meta Therapy involves making invisible micro-perforations into the upper layer of the skin in a painless way. As a result, the skin shifts its natural repair mechanism into high gear and starts producing collagen and elastin to repair the micro-perforations. Meta Therapy has a double active function; the controlled micro perforation activates the natural regeneration of the skin and applies the exact amount of active ingredients in the layer of the skin where they can be most active. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out. The skin becomes firmer and regains its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced, pores become finer, circulation is stimulated and the overall condition of the skin improves. Meta Therapy helps re-activate what your skin has lost over time by turning back the biological clock in a 100% natural way, giving your face a fresher and younger look. The right needle length is very important for the optimal effect of Meta Therapy. Meta Therapy perforates the basal cell layer into the upper layer of the dermis, which when activated, enhances the production of collagen and elastin without risk on the development of subcutaneous scar tissue. Therefore Meta Therapy is much more effective, safer and there are no short or long term unwanted effects with repeated applications. Why does META therapy work? 1. Turn back time with Dermatude Meta Therapy. The skin starts showing the first signs of ageing from the age of 25. Skin becomes thinner, blood circulation deteriorates and the natural production of collagen and elastin starts to slow down, causing the skin to lose its firmness and elasticity. This natural ageing process starts from the inside out, but is also accelerated by external factors, including excess UV light, air conditioning, stress and stimulants such as alcohol and tobacco. 2. The secret? Re-activate the collagen and elastin production of the skin from inside out. Meta Therapy shifts the natural repair mechanism of the skin into high gear and starts producing collagen and elastin. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out.

30 WOMEN’S INC. / OCTOBER 2014

Meta Therapy is the only skin improvement method that combines both aspects: natural skin improvement from the inside out and externally applied active ingredients by means of special serums. A dual effect in the battle against skin aging is tackling not just the consequences, but above all the cause of skin aging. 3. The result? Become your younger & fresher YOU in a 100% natural way. WILLIAMS HOME

SOCIAL BUTTERYFLY VILLAGE AT HENDRIX HOME OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO MINGLE By Rachel Parker Dickerson Photos by Brandy Strain Nancy Williams loves living in The Village at Hendrix, and not just because her home is beautiful. “I’m a social person. I love to get out and visit,” she said. When Williams got ready to build in The Village, she had been a widow for 10 years, she said. She lived in the Adamsbrook subdivision and had just been through a terrible summer drought, and the thought of taking care of her yard for another year was simply too much. The idea of having neighbors nearby to keep her company was also very attractive. The Village lifestyle seemed very appealing to her. In the process of preparing to move, Williams met and fell in love with Bob Dornblaser. They married, and now they live together in the home she planned for herself. “We are both huge, huge Razorback fans. We met through some mutual friends and struck up this friendship because we were both single. It just kind of went from there,” she said. When she started planning the design, Williams knew how she wanted her home to feel, but she did not know exactly what to choose, so she reached out to a friend. “After I chose my house plan, I called my friend RaeLynn Callaway. I told her I want it to be a happy house, I want it to have the cottage feel. She went with me to pick out everything.” One thing that was important to Williams was that the wall colors work well with her art collection. Callaway told her they would choose a “happy” color but one neutral enough to hang art. The two main colors downstairs are White Raisin, a muted yellow, and Ivorie. All the paint colors are from Sherwin Williams in Conway. “I had lots of very special pieces of artwork. One of my daughters paints, and I have artwork of friends that I really wanted to use,” Williams said. In the living room, the fireplace is accented with yellow and white ceramic tiles and a raised hearth painted white. A red and white gingham couch covered with colorful throw pillows makes the room feel cottage-cozy. The room also has a wall covered with built-in bookshelves. “I love bookshelves,” Williams said. “I love to see books. I think books and pictures make a home so personal; so you.” The kitchen is roomy with an extra-large island in the middle. The room is Rye Grass, a WWW.WOMENSINC.NET 33

green hue, and the cabinets are Ivorie. The island has a granite top, and the countertops are done in quartz. Williams was particularly pleased with her laundry room, located just off the kitchen, which has a blackand-white tile floor. “I love the kitchen because it’s big and open and airy,” she said. “When you have people over, I don’t care if you have 20,000 square feet, they’re going to gather in the kitchen.” The master bedroom is painted Mindful Gray. The bed is covered with yellow and white quilts and green, yellow and gray pillows. At the foot of the bed is a green toile ottoman, and dark green wooden lamps sit on nightstands on either side. The exterior of the home is painted Green Sprout, and the front door is Crabby Apple Red. The front

porch is made of simple, unpainted wood planks. Williams has displayed her love for the Razorbacks by decorating her porch in red. A set of red Adirondack chairs and table and a red bench plus a Razorback flag, statue and burlap football all declare what kind of fans live here. Williams is also a big fan of The Village lifestyle. “It’s very unique out here. Everyone is super friendly,” she said. “If you’re lonely here, it’s your own fault, because there’s always someone sitting on their front porch who’ll say, ‘Hey, come sit with me a minute.’ There is some kind of a social activity out here all the time. Somebody has a porch party all the time. We’ve had neighborhood progressive dinners, neighborhood potlucks. The Village lifestyle really is everything it’s cracked up to be.”

SPIRITUALITY

Conway, kids, life and faith

By Andrea Lennon

C

onway is a great place to live. My husband, Jay, and I have lived in this city for 17 years, which is almost our entire married life. I really can’t believe that we have lived in one place that long. Without a doubt, Conway is home for us. We have great friends, a great church, and enjoy all aspects of this thriving community--- even the traffic! During our time in Conway, the Lord has blessed us with two boys. Jake is 14 and Andrew is 10. We love our boys. Jake and Andrew are as different as Jay and I. Jake is outgoing and never meets a stranger. Andrew is happy being at home and hanging out with the only other female in our family--- our dog, Lulu. I will save my stories about Lulu for another day. Let’s just say, the Lord teaches me patience through this dog! As my boys grow up, I am noticing lots of changes in our life. First and foremost, we are busy. Wow! Just getting my guys to and from their activities is a full time job. Second, a new “odor” has taken over our home; and when I say “taken over,” I mean it. Both Jake and Andrew play football. Jake also plays baseball. The boys and their uniforms have a definite smell. This smell is so strong that it can bring a tear to my eyes. Often as I am loading the washing machine with practice uniforms or game day attire, I take the opportunity to thank God for “that smell.” To me, “that smell” represents commitment, hard work, diligence, and a willingness to be a part of a team. Each time I thank God for “that smell,” I try to evaluate my life. As I do, I am reminded that I too should have distinguishing marks as a result of my relationship with Christ. My life should demonstrate love, faithfulness, respect, humility, and a willingness to work hard at the task God places before me. Certainly, this type of living brings glory to God and peace to my heart. Hopefully, I will not have “that smell” rub off on me. If I do, I am trusting that my friends will intervene in my life. Instead of “that smell,” I hope to have the aroma of Christ all over my life. I hope that when others see my actions that they see Jesus demonstrated in me. I hope that when others hear my words that they hear words that are honoring to Christ. I hope that when I react to a sad time, a happy time, or an ordinary season of life that I produce God’s fruit and not my own. Certainly, this is what it looks like to have the aroma of Christ all over our life. I am thankful that we do not have to produce this type of life in our own power or strength. We would fail miserably every single time. It is reassuring to know that as we focus on Jesus in our daily life, He enables us to live a life that brings glory to Him. We live a life that brings glory to God when we surrender our lives to Jesus and follow His will and His way. I will say without wavering that the most important relationship in my life is my relationship with Jesus Christ. He saved me from my sins and I am thankful. Like King David, I too will proclaim, “As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long” (Psalm 71:14-15, New International Version) Andrea Lennon lives in Conway, Arkansas, with her husband, Jay, and sons, Jake and Andrew. Andrea ministers to the women of Arkansas through a speaking and writing ministry called True Vine Ministry. To learn more about this ministry, access Andrea’s website at www.andrealennon.net.

BOOK REVIEW

‘A prayer for Owen Meany’

Reviewed by Susan O’Keefe

“I

t is a chore to read at times, but oh, what a gift I would have forfeited had I quit before the final page,” said an avid reader who was at the same time embarrassed that she hadn’t read this novel sooner and relieved to now be on the other side as a consumer. Author John Irving is brilliant. His writing is unbelievably expressive. His tales intricately intertwine historical facts and figures. There is the constant humorous theological thread of debate between the Congregationalists and the Episcopalians. Irving covers an array of bases, emotions, and ideas. A Prayer for Owen Meany is a twenty plus year old award winning novel told from the perspective of John Wheelwright in his home in Toronto, Canada. Wheelwright recounts his childhood in the 1950s in New Hampshire. He and his mother live with his pretentious grandmother, who continues to hold her head high at her women’s meetings despite the fact that her daughter has had a son out of wedlock. Wheelwright’s mother was a sort of trailblazer until her life was bizarrely cut short. That’s where Owen Meany makes his first mark on the story. Owen and John were boyhood pals. They traded baseball cards, skipped rocks, and endured Sunday school lessons at the hands of old ladies whom they tormented with their antics. One such antic included lifting Owen high above their heads and passing him around the room as if he were a beach ball. Owen was unusually small. He was as light as a feather. He was abnormal in other ways too. His voice was described as an annoying screech. True to his ingenious writing skills, Irving types all of Owen’s dialogue in capital letters. When John Wheelwright complains about church services in a childish manner, Owen sincerely answers in his old soul persona: “A PERSON’S FAITH GOES AT ITS OWN PACE,” Owen Meany said. “THE TROUBLE WITH CHURCH IS THE SERVICE. A SERVICE IS CONDUCTED FOR A MASS AUDIENCE. JUST WHEN I START TO LIKE THE HYMN, EVERYONE PLOPS DOWN TO PRAY. JUST WHEN I START TO HEAR THE PRAYER, EVERYONE POPS UP TO SING.” Owen Meany believes he was born to be heard. From rearranging the speaking parts in the church’s Christmas Eve service to writing a popular editorial in the high school newspaper and even offering political comments regarding the Vietnam War, Owen is always in the spotlight. He reveals to readers that this is part of his purpose in life. He believes he is God’s instrument. The first mention of being used as God’s instrument comes near the beginning of the book. That’s when Owen and John were losing a baseball game. John’s long-legged, perfectly shaped mother is near the stands, visiting with friends, tossing her perfectly coiffed hair. Owen, who rarely sees any playing time, is called to bat for John. Owen nervously steps up to the plate. A strikeout is almost as certain as the fact that Owen’s parents are nowhere near the field. They are a common couple without any social

skills. Owen’s father runs the granite company. His mother passes the time staring. That particular Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire, ignites the fire that fuels this story. Owen hits the ball into foul territory. The foul ball strikes John Wheelwright’s mother in the neck. She falls to the ground, eternally. Owen is a bizarre 11-year old boy, trying to process a bizarre accident. But Owen doesn’t believe in accidents. He wrestles with why God would use him to end the life of his best friend’s mother. He eventually decides he must have interrupted the Angel of Death. John’s mother personified maternal comfort. Owen enjoyed his friend’s mother’s hugs and attention. There was a boyhood crush and blushing at the sound of compliments or encouragements. John’s mother was fond of Owen as well. She made certain Owen would attend the respected Gravesend Academy with all bills being sent to her at 80 Front Street. Over the years, John and Owen remain close friends. Though small in stature, Owen is larger than life in other ways. He commands attention. John begins to realize the unnatural ways of Owen Meany are simply the only ways his friend can survive. One of Owen’s ideas include a way to protect John accepts Owen’s offer to amputate his friend’s right-hand index finger to avoid serving in Vietnam. Owen’s father’s granite company employs a diamond saw sure to make a clean cut. Years pass. There are graduations, jobs, wars, draft dodgers, and intricate relationships. Owen and John are at an Arizona army base, recounting the twists and turns in each of their lives. “This book encompasses so many sub-plots. It’s important to pay attention to every word. There are no wasted words,” commented one fan. “I kept wondering how “the shot” was going to play a pivotal role,” inquired another reader. “The shot” was a slam dunk basketball move than Owen implored John to practice with him. It required Owen running as fast as his short legs would carry him, leaping into John’s arms, and soaring to the net. The maneuver was timed by the high school custodian. For reasons unknown to John, timing would prove to be critical. As the book concludes, it is although a hundred puzzle pieces shift seamlessly into place. There is no stone left unturned. Questions are answered. Plots come to fruition. Characters develop fully and leave a lasting impression in readers’ minds and hearts. Author John Irving also penned The Cider House Rules. This book, A Prayer for Owen Meany, is equally fascinating, fulfilling, and flawlessly written. Susan O’Keefe recently moved to Augusta, Georgia, with her husband, Jack, four children, and enthusiastic black Labrador puppy, Oxford. Susan plans to continue reading and reviewing as books create a window and relationship to thousands of lives and adventures.
