What does being college and career ready mean? As those terms are used more frequently in education circles, today’s students — more accustomed to updating their Facebook statuses than their résumés — could be left feeling confused and overwhelmed about the prospects of graduating from high school, moving on to college and selecting a career. In this magazine, The Daily Record, in partnership with the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, has for the 10th year provided an honest look into what students can expect after high school. The magazine also serves as a resource for soon-to-be graduates, detailing the courses and other requirements necessary to get into a college of their choice, set realistic goals and understand the cost of living away from home. Much of the current buzz is about careers in science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM. The focus on STEM is shared in education and business circles alike. And President Barack Obama recently established the goals of improving U.S. students’ achievement in science and math in the next decade, as well as training 100,000 new STEM teachers. The best advice I can give you is to do what you love, always work hard and follow your heart. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve something. Through focus, perseverance and making the right choices can you control your future. Right now, while you are still in high school, take the time to commit to the tasks necessary so that you are successful in school. Get involved in an extracurricular activity that interests you. Pick issues that are important to you and learn everything you can about both sides of them. Volunteer for a nonprofit to make a difference. Finally, listen to those around you — not negative influences, but the people who truly care about you. If you learn from others’ experiences and open your mind to opportunities, you will find yourself on a path that will lead to success, personal fulfillment and happiness. We all define success differently, but I believe career success is doing what you are passionate about, having a positive impact on others and taking a stand for what you believe in. If you follow that advice, you will find success in whatever path you choose to take after high school.

Meet with your school counselor at least one time each year to make sure you’re on track with your courses. Also consider joining clubs/activities/sports offered at school and in your community. A goal is what you aim for, or strive to accomplish. Why set goals? Setting goals for yourself lets you get more out of life by deciding who you want to be and what you want to do. It is not just a process to identify your dreams, but it helps you achieve them.

What made you want to become a Broadcast Journalist? I did a public service announcement for the Allegany County Board of Education on bullying prevention; I absolutely loved being in the studio, recording and rerecording, and finally hearing the finished product. I also love public speaking, which is what I believe really ignited my interest in the Media Industry.

What has being a Maryland Scholar meant to you? Being a Maryland Scholar has meant striving for academic excellence in all that I do, including but not limited to, studying, challenging myself, and making the most out of every opportunity presented to me in all

4 years of high school. I’ve challenged myself to go to the next level, rising to find my true potential both inside AND outside of the classroom.

Was it hard to become a Maryland Scholar? No. I have always had a natural desire to keep challenging myself to do better, to BE better. So really just taking classes that challenged me and doing the absolute best I could propelled me to becoming a Maryland Scholar.

Is there anything that you would have done differently in high school? If so, what would it be? I believe I took advantage of my time in high school to the point where there is nothing I would have done differently. I took extra classes, summer gym, AP and Honors courses, and I took an extra year of language. PAYING FOR COLLEGE The basics // It is possible for everyone to go to college. There are many ways to pay for school and to get help paying for it. There are four main types of financial aid students can get: Grants usually help offset the rising costs of college for families in need of financial assistance. Scholarships generally are given to recognize a student’s academic success, athletic skill or other talent. Scholarships may come with conditions, such as maintaining a certain major or GPA. Grants and scholarships typically do not need to be repaid. Student loans must be repaid, some with interest, after the student graduates or stops going to school. Parents also may take out loans for their children’s education. Work study is a federal aid program run by colleges that allows students to work to earn money to help pay for school.

Sources and types of aid include: Federal Aid: Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Work Study, Direct Family Educational Loan Program, Perkins Loan and TEACH Grant. Employers: Many employers also offer tuition assistance for children of employees or tuition reimbursement for employees.

What is FAFSA?

• View the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s “College 411: Student Guide to Higher Education and Financial Aid in Maryland” at www.mhec.state.md.us under the Preparing for College section.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The data on your FAFSA is used to determine if you are eligible for financial aid from federal and state aid programs and financial aid programs offered by colleges and universities. There is no charge to file the FAFSA so PLEASE do not pay for assistance in completing the FAFSA. If you cannot file an electronic FAFSA or need help in completing the form, contact your high school Guidance Office and/or college Financial Aid Office.

• Enroll in high level courses (i.e. Maryland Scholars) while in high school. College isn’t easy. The more you learn in high school, the better you will do in college, and the more college options you will have. Develop good study habits. They’ll help you now and later. • Take Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes during high school. Earn college credits now! • Get involved in school and volunteer activities. Many scholarship programs, especially private scholarships, look for these activities when selecting students for scholarships. Many clubs and other groups (Girl/Boy Scouts, honor societies, etc.) offer scholarships, some of which you can win before your senior year of high school.

When and how do I file the FAFSA?

Private organizations: Many clubs, professional organizations and community groups provide scholarships.

Colleges and universities: Schools have a variety of aid that includes grants, scholarships, employment and loans.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of scholarships available. There is more than $100 million of scholarship money available from the state of Maryland alone. Other scholarships are offered by individuals, corporations and foundations and can be searched for on the Internet or researched in your school’s guidance office or college center. Many scholarships require you to write an essay and/or submit letters of recommendation. There are scholarships out there for everyone, including specific awards for:

The FAFSA should be filed during the spring semester of your senior year between Jan. 1 and March 1. This will ensure you are considered for most types of financial aid. To file online go to http://www.fafsa. gov/. Both you and your parents must apply for a personal identification number (PIN) to sign your online FAFSA. This can be done when you file your FAFSA. You will need federal income tax information for the last tax year for both you and your parents. To ensure you do not miss the deadline, estimates can be used at first; however, a corrected FASFA must be submitted once tax returns are complete.

Ten tips for paying for college 1. Start saving for college early. 2. Work with high school counselors to find scholarships or search the internet on your own. 3. Make sure you know, and meet, deadlines for financial aid. 4. Earn college credit in high school by taking AP or concurrent enrollment classes. 5. Lessen costs by starting at a nearby community college and/or living at home. 6. Earn your degree faster by taking summer courses. 7. Save money by taking more classes - at some colleges you can take 15 credit-hours at the same cost as the more typical 12 credit-hours. 8. Get a part-time job on or off campus. 9. Many community groups and often your parents’ company have scholarships available. But it’s up to you to find these sources of money. 10. If you have a scholarship, don’t blow it by getting bad grades or acting up.

Dr. Teng Zhu was my mentor from my undergraduate days at Grambling State University. He is the person who encouraged me to pursue a career in physics. From his hospital bed, he was kind enough to suggest universities to which I should apply for internships. I have been fortunate to participate in every one he mentioned. Dr. Zhu passed away during my sophomore year, but his spirit and character are a consistent inspiration to me.

By taking Spanish, I was given the opportunity to learn about a different language while mathematics and science offered me challenges.

My Choices & Key Decisions At the end of my master’s program, I made the decision to pursue a career in outreach. I was going against the traditional career path, and it was not where I had originally envisioned my life leading. Because I did a summer internship at the Space Telescope Science Institute, the experience solidified my decision to follow my passion and enabled me to be in the profession I am in now.

What I Do As an outreach specialist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, I have a dual role of creating activities for two space telescopes: Hubble and James Webb. I assist in teacher development workshops and present scientific information about the James Webb telescope to middle and high school students. Using data from the Hubble Legacy Archive, I have also created educational activities for middle school students.

My schedule varies daily, but I start off the work day by getting myself and my newborn son ready. I drive to the school where I am scheduled to speak and set up my materials. My audience varies from kindergarteners to 12th graders. My presentation includes doing hands-on activities with the students. After the speaking engagement, I come back to the Institute to drop off my materials, check my e-mail and prepare for the next day’s outreach events. I write out frequently asked questions by the students and type up a summary of the day’s event at the school. Once I am done, I head home for the day after picking up my son from daycare. By 7:30 p.m., I am preparing dinner and getting my son ready for bed.

Why I Do It The Hubble and James Webb are great telescopes, and I enjoy the opportunity to tell the public about them.

My Typical Day As the sun is rising, I start my day by packing my daughters lunches for school and making their breakfast. I talk with them about what exciting activities are planned at their school for the day and I tell them what I will be doing at work. Partnering with my wife, we get them ready and out the door for school. In the office, there is rarely a dull moment as I admittedly enjoy

being immersed in large-scale, complex enterprise information technology challenges and working on them to find innovative solutions. The days can be a bit long, but I try to get back home in time to help my children with after-school activities and homework. After dinner and bedtime, I get back on the computer to finalize tasks for the day.

My Advice Explore your individual curiosity and always strive to create learning experiences both within and outside the classroom. Grab hold of opportunities to build upon learning with practical, real-world applications that are grounded in problems of national and international significance. I have always felt that what inspired me was not a person but a feeling. As a kid, I recall being alone in my room, listening to music night after night, and thinking to myself, “I don’t need to tell anyone that I’m bright and talented, but I am going to prove it.” It was just an inner drive in myself to prove that I was as good or better than anyone who made me feel otherwise.

Science classes were always my favorite because I thought it was super cool to learn about chemistry, physics, anatomy, atoms, molecules, velocity, bones, lungs, etc. I enjoyed learning the components of things in the world and how they operate.

My Choices & Key Decisions When I was in college, I took a lot of science courses, but I found out later that I did not have enough courses in one field to get a degree. After quickly making an appointment with an advisor, she told me I was qualified for several “Allied Health” degrees. I had no idea what allied health was, but I applied for all of them including physical therapy and radiological technology. Nuclear medicine technology is the only one that accepted me, and now I have been involved in the field for 25 years. Strange how things work out.

What I Do As a nuclear medicine technology instructor at Johns Hopkins Hospital, I teach students about this form of radiology, which involves injecting radioactive materials into patients and watching the physiology of different organs. The technology helps in the diagnosis of different diseases and conditions.

Why I Do It Being in a hospital feels like a second home to me. It is very comfortable and it is nice to not be afraid to go to a hospital. My job has also allowed me firsthand experience to stress the importance to students of treating patients like your own family and always maintaining a

high ethical standard toward other humans — not just in the hospital but in life. Every person deserves equal treatment and respect.

My Typical Day Taking my dog for a walk starts my day. Then I’ll head into the office or to a local hospital where my students are training. During my time in my office, I write tests, grade papers, prepare presentations, keep track of student progress and take care of anything related to the students and their progression in the nuclear medicine technology training program. While at the hospitals, I do labs with the students, which includes learning how to handle radioactive materials, and observe their critical skills while working in the real world. After a full day, I go home and walk my dog.

My Advice Never stop going to school and learning. Education is one of the very few things in life that never loses its value and it cannot be taken from you.

CHOICES AND KEY DECISIONS

One key decision I had to make was whether or not to accept a full scholarship to Washington College, with which I wasn’t familiar. I applied to approximately 11 schools and was accepted to 10 and was waitlisted at one. The only full scholarship I received was to attend Washington College through Project Excellence. I then had to decide whether to attend a small school I knew nothing about for free or to attend a school I really wanted to go to and take out loans. On top of that, I had to decide if I wanted to go through the 3-2 Dual Degree Program of Washington College, where I’d study physics and electrical engineering, or go straight to a school with a four-year program in electrical engineering. Sixteen years later I’m happy with my decision to attend Washington College and

FAVORITE SUBJECT My favorite subject is math. It is necessary for problem solving, critical thinking skills and to create equations in Excel in order to get figures relating to logistics like FPMH (failures per million hours).

WHAT I DO As a Logistics Engineer, I combine strong managerial skills with a solid understanding of mathematics and numbers in the science of planning and implementing the acquisition and use of resources, materials and finished products of Northrop Grumman.

WHY I DO IT Logistics engineers ensure the reliability, maintainability and availability of designed products or systems. This is an important job as the products Northrop Grumman produces are for use by the U.S. military and its allies. The job of the military is to protect us so we must ensure

that the products we produce for them not only are built to last but also can be repaired quickly and efficiently, if necessary. I see this position as an opportunity to use my technical knowledge in a way to help the service members protect our country.

MY TYPICAL DAY On any given day, work is generally spent seeking out information from other engineers. I definitely use my networking skills everyday as I have to communicate with people to find out how their knowledge can help me in completing my task.

MY ADVICE My advice would be to gain exposure in your field of interest as much as possible before college. Take advantage of summer internships and summer enrichment programs. Don’t wait until freshman year in college to decide on a major. Establish relationships with people in your field of interest so that while you are in college you’ll have mentors and connections for summer internships.

My Inspiration My family has supported and encouraged me to follow this journey and to overcome every obstacle I have found along the way. The person I am today is because of those close to me that encouraged me to keep moving forward.

My Choices & Key Decisions I began college with a major focusing on mathematics and computers. They were subjects I enjoyed, but I was not passionate about them. During my freshman year, I took an introductory biological sciences course, which awakened my interest in the natural world around me. I went on to change my major and earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biology. While considering pursuing a doctorate degree, I was unsure of which area in biological science to concentrate. Because I love the ocean, I decided to focus on ma-

rine sciences with a concentration in biological oceanography. The choice brought me full circle back to math and computer skills because I use satellites and computers to understand the biology of the oceans.

My Favorite Subject I have always been curious about the world around me and how things work. I enjoyed science because it allowed me to explore some of the answers.

What I Do As a post doctorate fellow at the laboratory, I perform research on ocean color remote sensing, which means I study the biology of the ocean using satellites.

Why I Do It My job gives me the opportunity to be at sea, finding ways to protect the environ-

ment and develop a better understanding of how the ocean functions.

My Typical Day There are two different typical work days I have which depends on the stage of my research that I am currently working on. The first involves loading equipment onto an oceanographic research vessel and traveling out into the water to collect data and perform experiments. These research expeditions sometimes last weeks depending on the goals of our research. My other typical day involves going to the office to use computers and satellites to analyze the ocean areas we have visited during our expeditions.

My Advice Be persistent in pursuing your goals, but more important, be true to yourself and follow what you are passionate about in your life.

My Inspiration My mom and my stepmom are the best. When I don’t believe in myself, my mother says “You can do it.” I may not believe me, but I believe her because she would never lie to me. My stepmother has been a constant resource. Once, when I was 15, I told her I wanted to be just like her. She looked at me and said, “No, you don’t. You are going to be you, and that’s going to be so much better.” These women have inspired me to be the best. I never pictured the life that they saw ahead of me, but now I am living it. It’s amazing.

My Choices & Key Decisions While working at another company, I really didn’t enjoy my job, which was unexpected because I always wanted to be an engineer. I started looking for a new position and applied for another job, but didn’t get it. It was a huge let down, but I wanted to know why, so I asked. The hiring manager said I needed more experience. I was good at my job, so I decided to challenge myself to find something else to

do when I got all my other work done that wasn’t project management. From that moment on, I decided that I didn’t want to be mediocre... I would be the best! Every moment was and is an opportunity for greatness.

My Favorite Subject I enjoyed mathematics and science because I liked that there was a right answer, and if I understood the information, I could figure it out.

What I Do My job responsibilities include reviewing and approving technical work for engineering projects such as Traffic Impact Studies and Hydraulic Reports. I try to figure out the best way to build roads so that vehicles, people and bicycles can share them in a safe way.

Why I Do It My job gives me the opportunity to solve problems with creative solutions. I like knowing I leave things better than the way I found them.

My Typical Day Usually I am at my desk by 7 a.m. I check emails and assign tasks to the engineers on my team. My work includes questions from developers and other SHA divisions/offices. I check with my supervisor to see if there are any additional tasks I can work on and also work on consultant invoices and proposal reviews.

My Advice I would recommend students watch a video on YouTube by a man named Eric Thomas entitled “How Bad Do You Want It?” There are a few things he talks about in the video that really touched me. First, it’s not about where you come from, you have to have heart to get where you want to go. Second, you have to sacrifice who you are for who you want to be by making hard choices about what is really important in your life. Third, sometimes life is painful, but the pain is temporary and will be replaced by something much better. If being successful were easy, everyone would be.

My Inspiration Most recently I was inspired by Dr. Alice Stewart, one of few female physicians during the 1940s and the youngest fellow to be elected to the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. She was interested in epidemiology, the science of disease patterns, and — within a limited budget and time constraints — she conducted a study that indicated x-ray use on pregnant women as a cause of childhood cancer. As she went against the conventional wisdom of her time, she fought for more than 25 years with copious research to get what is now considered good practice accepted by medical establishments. To me, she was a historical anomaly who demonstrated a great deal of perseverance to make the world a better place.

Throughout college, I held numerous careerrelated occupations from research analyst to executive assistant for a small business. Those jobs not only helped pay for my tuition and living expenses, but they also developed my

skillsets in a low-risk environment. Based on those initial capabilities, I was able to land my first career position and take on many roles within my company.

My Favorite Subject My favorite subject of all time was biology. As a high school student, I absolutely loved reading about the mechanisms behind the human body, why aging occurs, how eye colors are passed through generations and the reason for the prevalence of allergies over the past 20 years.

What I Do As a product development/biomedical engineer, I am in the unique position of ensuring that human operators can use our mechanical design as intuitively as possible without a deficit in human work performance or safety.

Why I Do It I love brainstorming design solutions and problem solving. I have great leaders that mentor me and have given me great tips and techniques along the

way. My day is fun because of the team of people I work with daily.

My Typical Day The day starts for me at 6:30 a.m. when I get up and go for a quick jog around the local park. After breakfast and getting ready for work, I listen to a podcast during my commute. I am at my desk by 9 a.m. responding to e-mails from my team, planning the tasks to be completed for the day and preparing for meetings to discuss the latest design development concepts. By 4:30 p.m., the work day winds down as I am determining the tasks for tomorrow and responding to any last minute emails. Once I am finished with work, I like trying a new restaurant or activity in the city with friends.

My Advice I really believe you get out of life what you put into it. The world is such a large place and there are so many opportunities and resources available now that it can be overwhelming at times. Don’t be afraid to go out and explore. Have a few adventures and expand your capabilities and interests.

My Choices & Key Decisions Many times your first job after college is not the one you see yourself in forever. I took a job after college, but I got to a point where I wanted more. It was a good job, just not something I wanted to do long term. I decided to leave the position even though I did not have another job lined up. Three weeks later, I started a new job. Today, I use skills that I learned from both jobs. Don’t be afraid to take chances — just make sure they are well thought out.

What I Do Managing a sales team of 13, we work with colleges and universities to teach students about loans, financial literacy and debt management. My job duties include establishing new products, coaching team members and helping the bank assist students and their families.

Why I Do It I am inspired by helping students achieve their goal of going to college. I also get to talk to families to help them understand the higher education process.

My Typical Day I get to do different things every day which helps to keep my job new and exciting. There really never is a typical day. I start

my morning with a cup of coffee and checking my e-mail to see if there is anything that needs my attention from the night before. My staff and I travel a lot so we do not always work the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. Most of us end up doing work late at night in the hotel. I usually have several meetings during the day with other managers, business partners and my team. My tasks include creating budgets for spending and travel, employee and product development and collaborating with other departments within the bank. When I am traveling, I attend trade shows, meetings with clients and planned conference activities.

My Advice Experience as much as you can in high school and college. Get involved because the more you are involved — the more experiences you gain. What you learn may one day help you to plan your future.

My Inspiration When I was growing up, my parents got me interested in the outdoors. We spent a lot of time in the mountains and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. While at those beautiful places, I developed a deep sense of appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. My parents not only showed me those places but gave me a lot of independence to explore them. My Choices & Key Decisions In undergraduate school, I had one particularly amazing summer. I spent half of the time in Alaska studying bald eagles as part of a student field studies program. I got to live in a tent at the base of a glacier. The rest of the summer, I found work as a deckhand on a tall ship in Mystic, CT. During this time, I

decided to combine my interest in conservation and environmental issues with my love of being on the water into my current career.

My Favorite Subject As a high school graduate, I enjoyed subjects such as art and science because they allowed me to be creative and go outdoors.

What I Do The current oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay is only about 1 percent of historic levels. We need more of them because oysters clean the water by filtering as they eat, and their reefs create habitat for other species. As an oyster biologist, I work with state and federal agencies and non-profits to build oyster reefs.

Why I Do It My job gives me the opportunity to help improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay plus I

get to spend time outdoors.

My Typical Day My days vary a lot, which I like. Some days I spend in front of a computer while others I meet with partner organizations and coworkers to plan oyster restoration projects and develop policies that support those projects. The best days of all are the ones I get to spend aboard boats, seeing the projects Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve planned actually go into the water.

My Advice Find your bliss, as my good friend always says. Do what you love, and if you have a particular talent that you also love, then focus on that. There are so many amazing careers out there, and if you apply creativity and ingenuity you can probably build your own career doing things you love.

My Inspiration My students inspire me every day to continue teaching. I also have a mentor who is a retired teacher and assistant principal, Patricia Martin, who I speak to and go to for advice. My Typical Day During the legislative session, my day starts around 6 a.m. I eat breakfast with my wife and 2-year-old son before heading out for my hourlong commute. By 9 a.m., my work day begins with a variety of tasks on my to-do list. I attend

meetings with my staff or other policy makers from around the state. Reviewing and editing documents about policy issues in matters like education, employment, health, community living or transportation is another job duty. Throughout the day, I review my calendar, return e-mails and phone calls and tend to administrative duties. I finalize written or oral testimony for any bills hearing that day. Eating lunch on the way, I drive from our Baltimore office to Annapolis to drop off testimony and attend bill hearings or work sessions we are following. I often meet with legislators, their staff, staff from advocacy groups or other state agencies to discuss pending matters or issues. Because bill hearings can last into the evening hours, I usually get home between 7 and 8 p.m.

My Inspiration When I was a toddler, my father finished his service in the U.S. Army. He then went to Tougaloo College on a basketball scholarship. My Inspiration For the past two years, one of my players has been fighting thyroid cancer. She was diagnosed the day after she graduated from high school. She has been down a difficult road for a 19-year-old, a road no one should have to travel. However, if you met her you would never know it. Cancer has not stopped her from living her life. She has inspired me to continue to live my life to the fullest, no matter what it throws at me and to do it with a smile on my face.

My Choices & Key Decisions When I graduated from college, I was ready to pursue an elementary teaching position. My college basketball coach, Billy Finney, asked me about my plans for the future and if I had ever considered becoming a graduate assistant. The job was for a full-time basketball assistant at Gettysburg College and, in return, they would pay for me to receive my master’s degree. Coach Finney offered to call on my behalf. I got the interview and was offered the position. Do I take the path I had been preparing for academically for four years to pursue,

or do I attempt something I never expected to do? With the support of my family, I took the position at Gettysburg. Looking back, it was a major stepping stone in how I got to where I am today.

My Favorite Subject Social studies, psychology and sociology were the ones I enjoyed the most because of the enthusiasm my teachers at high school demonstrated in the classroom. My teachers had such a positive impact on my life.

What I Do I am the leader of the women’s basketball program at Marymount University. Because we are a Division III school, our players do not receive atheletic scholarships. They play for the love of the game. In season, we practice six days a week for two hours. I plan, organize and run practices, scout out opponents, breakdown game film, and monitor the academic progress of my players. Another aspect to my job is recruiting admissible student-athletes, which is a year-long process.

Why I Do It It is rewarding to help my players reach their potential. My players inspire me to do my job.

My Typical Day My schedule depends on whether I am in-season or out-of-season. In-season we can put in 10hour workdays, six days a week. A typical day inseason focuses on how to prepare my team for our next game. I watch film of our most recent game, begin to focus on our next opponent, and read scouting reports. Our practices consist of teaching fundamentals, player development, strategies and conditioning. Once practice is over, I will make calls to recruits. My staff and I travel up and down the east coast to evaluate players.

My Advice Make things happen for yourself. I think this is possible through a strong work ethic, integrity and service to others. Do not expect things to happen for you because of who your parents are or where you are from. Make an honest name for yourself.

My Inspiration My father always inspired me and taught me at a very young age that it’s important to be willing to try new things. When I was 5 years old, I was signed up for soccer, but didn’t want to play. He told me that I had to try it and, if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t have to keep playing. I ended up loving soccer. It was a good lesson learned, and one that I have kept with me my whole life.

My Favorite Subject My favorite class in high school was pre-calculus. This class was a foundation of advanced algebra and trigonometry to help prepare me for the many calculus courses taken as an engineering student in college. We focused on areas such as conic sections, vectors and more. Throughout the early stages in my career, this course really helped me with the in-depth analysis required.

My Choices & Key Decisions My high school was very small; in fact, my graduating class had only 69 students. I knew I wanted to attend the University of Maryland at

College Park, but needed a “stepping stone” to help myself transition from a small high school to such a large university. I decided to go to the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore for three semesters and then transferred to College Park. That really helped me to prepare. I also faced some key decisions about my career path. During my junior year of college, the engineering program at Maryland became very challenging. I thought about changing my major and going to culinary school. My parents, having owned a restaurant since I was very young, made me think that was the path I wanted to pursue. But, I had to weigh the pros and cons of running a restaurant against the opportunities I would have if I completed my degree in engineering. I ended up sticking with engineering, and I am glad I did.

MY CHOICES AND KEY DECISIONS When I was a junior in high school, I got involved with a youth group called Young Life. At first, it was just a fun place to go hang out and meet new people, but along the way I realized what it meant to have a relationship with God. My senior year, I decided to make a commitment to myself and Jesus to live my life in a way that would be pleasing to Him. WHAT I DO As a financial statement auditor, I work with companies who have to issue financial statements to their shareholders. I review the accounting and financial ledgers to ensure they are correct. Throughout an audit, I work closely with the employees at the client site to review and test different schedules and estimates. I work with several different teams throughout the year for a variety of clients, which makes my job extremely interesting. Most people assume I do taxes since I am an accountant, but I don’t even do my own taxes!

WHY I DO IT My job challenges me on a regular basis which I enjoy. I like constantly learning new things.

MY TYPICAL DAY There is no such thing as a typical day for me because I am always going to different client sites and working on a variety of projects. I typically wake up around 5:30 a.m. and go to the gym. I’ll come home, have breakfast with my husband and get ready for work. My commute will either take me to my office or the client’s office. I check my email, have a status meeting with my team and work on analyzing a report provided by the client. I spend lunch with my team. Once we have finished, I call or stop by the client’s office to have a meeting. A progress update with my manager is next to make sure things are going as planned. I read through financial statements and provide comments to the client. After my work day comes to a close, I go home and have dinner with my husband.

MY ADVICE Don’t live in a bubble. Go out into the world, not just the United States, and make a difference. Don’t settle for just getting by. Be extraordinary.

My paternal grandfather was born in 1900 and was a man of many trades. He was a baker, electrician, brick mason, corner store owner and handyman. He built his house, which still stands today in Atlanta, by hand. He gave the neighborhood children candy if they brought him undamaged bricks. My family was not wealthy, however, my grandfather used his hands to build a life for himself. He gives true meaning to the saying “You should know a little bit about a lot.” He was a hard worker whose work ethic has been passed down through the generations.

Understanding and interpreting data collection in statistics was intriguing to me. I also enjoyed biology and genetics classes. Understanding the body and the genetic structure of what made me who I am was very interesting.

Why I Do It

I made a decision to stay beyond my four year commitment in the military. I did an evaluation of the opportunities that were afforded to me through the various military programs versus going into the civilian engineering sector. Despite the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, I wanted to explore what the Army had to offer.

I love this country, and I am proud of my service to this nation. My job is fun because there are always new concepts to explore. It is inspiring to know my efforts in developing products will improve the Army’s future capabilities.

What I Do My job entails working with scientists and researchers to develop future products and systems. I aim to facilitate government contracts to get the U.S. Army the goods and services it needs and help to establish cooperative research agreements with universities across the country.

My Typical Day My day starts early when the alarm buzzes at 5

a.m. I get ready for the day and commute. Before I start work, I arrive at the gym at 7:30 a.m. for a workout. My work day starts at 9 a.m. and consists of consulting with scientists and researchers on how to procure the items needed to suit their needs and further their research. No day is the same. I meet with the director(s) to gauge the future requirements in order to create a realistic execution plan for my staff. By 4 p.m., I am closing out emails, doing a daily review of all my contract actions and prioritizing pending contracts for the next few days.

My Advice Even though, sometimes, it seems as though you are made to consume useless information, take a chance and do your best. Engaging these tasks head on and being familiar with these concepts will help to shape your future. Who knows? You may truly have an interest in topics that sound boring, like mathematics and physics, but haven’t figured out yet that your passion is for advanced algorithms that control robots.

MY INSPIRATION My grandfather always believed I could do anything I wanted to do. He taught me that anything I put my heart behind, I could achieve. He was a very wise man. We traveled together a lot when I was a child. He showed me a lot of the country. Our trip to Nebraska was one of the best. We got to see a national model airplane competition.

MY CHOICES AND KEY DECISIONS My original field of study in college was architecture. As I began studying, I decided I wanted to be more hands on with my future job. I had always been good at repairing things, yet I didn’t want to be restricted to an office job. I decided to change majors from architecture to automotive repairs.

MY FAVORITE SUBJECT While in high school, my technology education teacher put together a course geared toward competing in the National Engineering Design Challenge.

The contest asks a group to create a machine or product that can help improve people’s lives. The year I participated, the task was to build a machine able to carry groceries for disabled people. We designed a machine that could climb stairs and travel multiple different terrains carrying groceries.

MY TYPICAL DAY

I repair a variety of equipment from large items such as locomotives, cranes and generators to smaller equipment like chain saws. There is a lot of special equipment they use, so it’s a pretty broad spectrum. Some of the equipment we can repair reasonably quickly, but if there is a major project, some of the stuff can take as long as a week.

My day starts before the sun comes up. I’ll check on my son first before getting ready for work. My almost 20minute commute starts around 5:15 a.m. which allows me to beat rush hour traffic. Once I reach work, we have a morning safety meeting to go over all the details of what we are going to do for the day. I’m given my assignment, and then I go repair whatever I am asked to do. The repair work lasts all day. My shift ends with going back to the shop and finishing up paperwork before heading home. After picking up my son from daycare, we go home to spend the afternoon playing together. My wife comes home, and we spend some time together as a family.

When something breaks, I modify or repair the item to work and function for what we need it to do. I feel like I really accomplished something when I can look back and see my achievements.

My Inspiration Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has long been an inspirational icon for me. After she graduated from law school at the top of her class, she was turned down for employment by over 40 law firms because of her gender. Rather than surrender her goals, she eventually found employment and went on to hold political office. Her story exemplifies perseverance and dedication. When I encounter an obstacle that seems insurmountable, I remind myself of Justice O’Connor’s story and am reassured that, where there is a will, there is a way.

My Choices & Key Decisions I am the first lawyer in my family. Having recognized my interest in the law while in high school, I pursued internships in college that exposed me to the law, including working for a domestic violence legal clinic, interning for

an elected official and with lobbyists in Annapolis. The exposure taught me about the profession and showed me that a legal career was the right path for me.

My Favorite Subject I love science experiments and learning how the human body works. I also enjoyed social studies because we learned about the formation of our country. As a Marylander, I feel so lucky to live next door to our nation’s capital.

What I Do The area of the law where my caseload focuses is business and commercial litigation. I usually represent businesses in lawsuits where they are being sued or are filing a lawsuit against another party. The cases sometimes involve contracts, personal injuries or property damages.

I walked away from those jobs with the utmost respect for my uncle, who owns his own drywall business, and manual laborers like him who have to physically exert themselves so much in order to make a living. What I Do As a scout, I get to evaluate college football players who are eligible for the National Football League draft. While judging their physical abilities as a player, I also try to find out what type of person they are off the field of play. There are so many benefits to my job. I get paid to travel across the country to watch football and build relationships with coaches and players. Plus, when our team is putting together the roster, I get to have some input.

Why I Do It I’ve had a love of sports in general since I was young, but football has always been my favorite. As a scout, I enjoy the process of trying to build a team.

My Typical Day My day varies depending on the season. During football season, I wake up and go to a college or university for the day. I call ahead to let them know I am coming so I can find out where to park, who I should speak to and where I need to go. I’ll spend my day reviewing film, compiling a list of draftable prospects, talking to school personnel and attending practice. After driving to the next school, I get to my hotel room and type up reports from my observations of the day.

My Inspiration My parents were very supportive and very involved in all of my school activities. My dad was a math teacher and always helped me with my math homework when I needed it. My mom helped me with reports and school projects. In high school, my physics teacher was another great source of inspiration for me. He taught me that life wouldn’t be easy and that I needed to work hard to achieve success.

My Choices & Key Decisions When I was in college, I decided to switch majors. I started as a math major but later changed to computer engineering after realizing that once I graduated my career options would be limited with a math degree. I enjoyed math and was good at it, but I didn’t want to be a math teacher. At the time, I felt like that was my only option with a math degree. I wanted a major with a wider range of opportunities and, after consulting with friends and counselors, I settled on computer engineering. I’m happy with my decision. It was the right choice. Another key choice for

me was seeking intern positions early on. At a college job fair, I met a nice recruiter from the National Security Agency looking for interns and co-op students. I applied and was accepted for a position. That experience has shaped the rest of my professional career. I would not be where I am today had I not made that one decision.

My Typical Day

I was good at mathematics, plus I thought it was fun.

Every day is a little different for me. When you run a small business, you end up filling more than one role. That’s part of what makes my job so exciting. I spend a lot of time communicating with customers, partners and my team. Running a small business also means working long hours. I normally work from the time I get up to the time I go to bed, but I love every minute of it. When I’m not working, I participate at local technology and entrepreneurship events, and I attend Toastmasters.

My fiancé and I came up with an idea for a business in the cyber security space based on our experience working in the government. I manage all non-technical activities like marketing, sales, customer support and customer acquisition.

My Inspiration I try to be Christ-like every day. He is the ultimate example of how to treat and lead others and be a positive influence. I had a really great mathematics teacher who made learning the material fun. I grew to love algebra. A business management and marketing class was my favorite at Allegany College of Maryland. What I Do For four years, I was the general manager of a Chick-fil-A in Hagerstown. Throughout my tenure there, I was able to learn from the owner what it takes to run a business. My mother is a woman of courage and humility. Her success is a result of hard work and diligence. I will always admire her steadfastness.

With a love of grammar and spelling, English allowed me to express myself creatively through poetry and short stories. When I was in college, the classes I enjoyed included speech, sociology, family studies, religion and services marketing. These courses strengthened my interpersonal skills and often encompassed a diverse group of majors which contributed to great class discussions.

My Choices & Key Decisions I dedicated the summer after earning my undergraduate degree to perfecting my resume and cover letter. I understood that the overall job market was extremely competitive and that the field that I had studied was crowded. I had to discover ways in which I could bring value to an organization and succinctly convey that on my resume and cover letter. I spent three consecutive weeks visiting the library, reading books on resume writing and self-branding, viewing resumes of communications professionals, reading articles on new hires, and meeting with local decisionmakers. Within four months I had received three full-time offers, all in the realm of my personal ideal workplace.

What I Do As an Outreach Coordinator, I market the University System of Maryland’s college preparation campaign, Way to Go MD, through special events, large and small group presentations and publication production.

Why I Do It I love students and enjoy mentoring. It doesn’t feel like work, more like paid volunteer hours.

My Typical Day None of my workdays are the same. Some days I leave at 5 a.m. to drive across the state to host assemblies for students in grades 6-10. Other days I go straight to the office to market presentations and events via cold-e-mailing, cold-calling and social media. I may work on drafting stories and events for the way2gomaryland website. My Inspiration It is hard to say specifically who my inspiration is, but what I can say is that I love biographies and autobiographies. People such as Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, and the list continues. More recently, I read about an evangelist and inspirational speaker named Nicholas James “Nick” Vujicic. His story is not like any other, and his influence is simply remarkable. My Typical Day As a UMBC student, I live and breathe books and sometimes forget what the sun looks like. This is slightly stretching the truth of course. On an average day, I have anywhere from one to three classes. If I’m not working, then I love to take afternoon naps, usually after my last class. I wake up very early and stay up late, so the naps are very helpful. I normally spend at least 45 minutes in the gym daily. The library is another place I go for a few hours. Besides school, I am also president of a student organization. I spend time planning and talking to my board.

My Advice I was listening to President Obama’s recent address to the Morehouse College graduating class and he made some remarks that I would like to live by.
